Daydream believer
It’s summertime! Which is a great time to plan a local adventure or two. One of my favorite things to do in the summer is pack up the car and hit the road to explore a new spot or revisit a favorite place. For a little inspiration, we’ve compiled a few weekend destinations, each offering a very different experience and all less than a four-hour drive away. Turn to page 44 to check out some suggestions in “Day Trippin’,” then gas up the car, grab a friend or your family (or just go solo!) and get out of town. Adventure awaits.
As children, many of us fantasized about becoming a famous singer. Being able to command a stage and belt out a tune to a crowd of adoring fans... If only! Most of us, however, simply don’t have that kind of talent and have thus resigned ourselves to singing in the shower or car. But for local teen Serenity Arce, that dream became reality.
You may have caught Serenity on this season of The Voice on NBC. The 17-year-old blew the celebrity coaches away with her “blind audition,” getting all four of them to turn their chairs for a chance to have her on their team. She ended up selecting Chance the Rapper as her coach and making it all the way to the television competition’s semifinals, where she performed in front of a live audience in hopes of securing America’s vote. Imagine walking the high school halls one day, and the next finding yourself performing on live television for millions of people. Living the dream! If you watched, then you already know Serenity didn’t end up winning. But the experience was one she’ll always remember, and she’s still pursuing her dreams. We caught up with her back in April, when the show was still taping, to get all the behind-the-scenes details of her journey. Read all about it in “Teenage Dream,” which begins on page 38.
Peace and blessings,

Summer adventures
Welcome to our summer issue! I always look forward to summertime on the Treasure Coast, a magical time of year. This is when I try to catch up on things, get ahead for the season, and enjoy some rest and relaxation.
As things slow down a bit, my husband and I are excited to visit with friends both near and far. We also enjoy visiting many of the restaurants and outdoor venues when we don’t have the many obligations of season. It’s nice to be able to take advantage of Florida resident specials at our beautiful local resorts, restaurants, and spas.... Staycations are the best!
Another activity on my summer to-do list is tackling my long-overdue reading list. I can’t wait for weekend days spent floating in the pool or lounging on the patio with a good book. I hope this summer offers many such luxuries for you too.
In this issue, we have several special advertising sections I hope you’ll check out. Our biannual Private Education Guide, published every March and July, is a go-to for those of you who have either recently moved here or are just looking for alternative education options. We have also brought back our Summer Escapes section with some inspired local ideas. The Home Resource Guide, which appears in seven issues a year, is great for anyone who is planning on doing some renovations or refreshing their home. And the Luxury Homes Guide, in every issue, covers all of your real estate needs. Contact me if you are interested in any of these advertising opportunities moving forward.
Please continue to support our local businesses and restaurants, as we all know things do slow down during the summer months. Remember, the offseason is the perfect time to snag a table reservation or spend a day shopping at the many local boutiques and shops around town.
Coming up in the October issue is our annual Faces of Martin & St. Lucie Counties promotional section. If you’d like more information about that, please reach out to me. Also coming soon: our special Wedding and Event Planning advertising section.
Have a fabulous, relaxing summer and I will see you in September!

by KELLEY MARCELLUSIf you’ve caught a glimpse of a cornhole tournament on ESPN or CBS Sports, your eyes aren’t fooling you. The classic backyard game is having a moment—and some say it’s becoming the great equalizer among professional sports. “Cornhole is a really level playing field because it’s just throwing a 1-pound bag 30 feet,” says Palm Beach Gardens resident Rosie Streker, 43, who is one of 32 professional female cornhole players in the country. “Girls can play just as well as the guys, and it’s also one of the few sports where the payout for women is equal to the men.”
The American Cornhole League, which governs pro cornhole, is currently in its seventh season. The 2024 season began with a national tournament in West Palm Beach in April and concludes August 2-11 at the World Championships in South Carolina. “For a few years, we were the fastest-growing
sport in the county, before pickleball took over the lead,” says Streker, who recalls tossing her very first bag at Stadium Grill (when it was JJ Muggs) in Abacoa. The game would introduce Streker to new friends—and her husband, Davis Streker, a former professional cornholer himself, who encouraged her to try regional and then statewide tournaments.
Streker taught elementary school locally for 15 years, leaving her day job in 2022 to focus on the sport. She turned pro six years ago, and now—with regional, national, and world titles under her belt—she loves helping other players improve their game.

A LOCAL PIZZERIA STARS IN A NEW DOCUSERIES
WUp your backyard game with these pro tips from Rosie
• Use four fingers to support the bag and secure with your thumb on the opposite side of the bag.
• Gently pinch the bag with your thumb; don’t ball it up.
• Your fingers should point where you want the bag to land; palm faces up when you release.
• Step forward to gain momentum or stand stationary at the end of the board; don’t step beyond the end of the board and avoid skyrocketing the bag.
“When I’m at events with newer players, I walk around and observe as people warm up,” she says, admitting she can’t help doling out tips on how to handle the bags or improve aim. She and her husband are encouraging local high schools to create cornhole clubs, and Streker notes that the first scholarships were offered to collegiate players last year. As for her own game, Streker has lofty goals. “I was the number-three lady last year and the year prior,” she says. “I’m working hard to be number one.” southflorida cornhole.com
hen Fantini's New Haven Style Apizza opened in Stuart in 2019, it became a popular destination for Connecticut transplants who craved the specialty pizza from up north. The thin-crust New Haven–style “apizza”—which is baked in a coal-fired brick oven to get its distinctive char— originated in the 1920s at Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana in New Haven, and that’s where Fantini’s owner Jim Fantin got his start in the biz, working as a dishwasher when he was 15.
Film director Gorman Bechard decided to feature the local establishment in the pilot episode of his latest docuseries on pizza—Slice of America
A self-described “pizza snob,” Bechard is known for independent feature films and documentaries on topics as widespread as senior dogs and Matchbox cars.
“Fantini’s has the best pizza in Florida,” says the director, whose new docuseries highlights well-known pizza varieties from cities across America being served in places outside those cities.
“Apizza is a big deal up in New Haven,” says Fantin, 58, who lives in Port St. Lucie. “People have shared all kinds of emotions, dates, celebrations, and more around their favorite pizza joint. I hope everyone, including New Haveners, will love the show.”
The pilot episode of Slice of America featuring Fantini’s will be shown at The Lyric Theatre July 11. fantinisapizza.com; whatwerewethinkingfilms. com; lyrictheatre.com —Valerie Staggs

Protecting coral reefs and native marine life from the invasive lionfish
by PAIGE FEIGENBAUMThe nonnative lionfish was first spotted in Florida waters off the coast of Dania Beach in 1985 and has been wreaking havoc in our waterways ever since. While beautiful to look at with its red, brown, and white stripes and feathery tail, the creature also sports many spines that are venomous to the touch. With such deadly armor, the lionfish scares other marine life away, leaving it to freely roam the waters with no would-be predators and threatening other fish as they struggle to compete for food. Lionfish reproduce at a staggering rate, with adult females releasing upwards of two million eggs a year.
“Lionfish prey on juveniles of economically important species such as grouper, snapper, and crustaceans,” says Emily Robicheaux, lionfish outreach coordinator for the Division of Marine Fisheries Management at the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). She adds: “They also eat parrotfish and wrasses, which are crucial to the health of coral as they help remove algae, allowing sunlight to reach the coral so photosynthesis can occur. Lionfish impact the entire reef ecosystem.”
To help control the population, the FWC launched an annual statewide tournament called the Lionfish Challenge in 2016. Every summer, recreational anglers and commercial fishermen compete, with prizes awarded based on the number of lionfish harvested (recreational) and the
cumulative weight of all lionfish caught (commercial). This year’s challenge began May 24 and will continue until September 2. Stuart resident David Connerth took home the title of “lion king” in the recreational sector back in 2020 with 1,141 catches. Connerth, a 45-year-old divemaster, continues to compete in the challenge annually, placing third last year and fourth in 2022. “I’m a very competitive person, and I think it’s a great opportunity to motivate the diving community in eradicating the invasive lionfish,” he says.
It is believed that the lionfish, which is native to the Indo-Pacific, ended up in our area because people released pet lionfish into the wild here. “It was humans who brought the invasive lionfish to this part of the world, and I feel the need to do everything I can to right that wrong before they wipe out our native species,” Connerth says. “I would like to preserve our natural environment for future generations to enjoy as I have.” fwcreefrangers.com ❖
GOOD EATS!
Lionfish meat can be safely consumed once the venomous spines are removed. Chef Beau Grant serves lionfish to passengers aboard Food Yacht in Jupiter and describes their flavor as mild and “non-fishy.” Says Grant: “Our most popular way to cook lionfish is panko-crusted, lightly fried, and topped with a Thai sweet chili garlic sauce. It pairs well with fruits, salad, and white wines with bright flavors. Lionfish easily takes on the flavor of any ingredient you cook it with, making it an ideal fish for multiple flavor profiles and food cultures.” foodyacht.biz

JUPITER RESIDENT LINDSEY TILTON DECIDED TO EXPLORE ENDURANCE PADDLEBOARDING AND INADVERTENTLY LAUNCHED A MOVEMENT
by NILA DO SIMONAround hour 47 of an ultramarathon-like paddleboard competition, Lindsey Tilton performed a simple act that got her through the next hour of the excruciating endurance race: she took a breath.
The power of breath, which she has relied on during her years as a yoga and meditation practitioner, allowed her to push through what would become a nonstop 48-hour paddleboarding expedition on a 400-acre lake in Sarasota. The endurance
race began on the morning of December 2 with 31 total competitors, and 26 men and women dropped out before Tilton. She ultimately became the last female paddler standing—setting the women’s record in the process. (At the inaugural race the previous year, the longest female finish was 13 hours.)
Tilton missed out on the title of 2023 Last Paddler Standing by just two hours, an accolade that went to male SUPer Blake Carmichael of Fort Lauderdale. But she earned an equally impressive unofficial crown along the way: queen of female empowerment.
“After the race, it cascaded into this girl-power movement,” she says of her finish in Last Paddler Standing, one of the few paddleboarding competitions with only an all-gender division, meaning women and men compete for the overall win. “Girls messaged me to say they had watched my performance and were asking for advice and saying they were going to sign up next year.”
Endurance paddleboarding wasn’t even on Tilton’s radar until four years ago, when she learned about it after taking a paddleboard yoga class. A longtime runner and surfer, the Jupiter resident was hooked from the beginning and purchased her own paddleboard that same day. When she began SUP racing, Tilton says she was
one of the slower paddlers, often finishing last. Friends assured her she would get better by training, and that was all the motivation she needed to keep paddling.
Today, the 30-year-old is a regular at standup paddleboard meetups at Coral Cove and Burt Reynolds parks and has created an online and in-person training group for paddlers of all levels called Aloha Athletics, alongside fellow paddleboarder Casey McCullough. Tilton says training other athletes in a sport she loves is a dream: “I didn’t set out with that race to inspire all these girls, but we need to bridge the gap in resources and training to make it a level playing field for men and women.” Aloha Athletics is open to both men and women.
She may not have set out with the goal of empowering other women, but it’s an accolade she gladly wears. “It’s addicting to see if I can go faster, go longer,” she says. “That drive is motivating for me to break those walls.”
At press time, Tilton was training for the June 23 Crossing for Cystic Fibrosis, an 80mile paddle trek through the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf Stream from Bimini, Bahamas to Lake Worth Beach that supports patients diagnosed with the life-threatening disorder. This year’s event will be Tilton’s second solo crossing. aloha-athletics.com; lastpaddlerstanding.com ❖

THIS PAST SPRING, KIDS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS GATHERED EVERY THURSDAY EVENING FOR A FRIENDLY GAME OF BASEBALL. NOW THE LOCAL LEAGUE’S FOUNDER IS GETTING READY TO EXPAND WITH A FALL SEASON.
by VALERIE STAGGSTrevor Sherrard credits his 8-year-old son, Johnny, with changing his life. Born and raised in Stuart, Sherrard, 38, moved to Denver in 2012 and was working four jobs just to make ends meet. He met his wife, Kayla, while working one of those jobs, and in 2016 their first son was born. Johnny is nonverbal autistic.
“When we had Johnny, I realized there was no way I could be a bouncer and a bowling alley attendant and work at the dump and provide for my son,” says Sherrard. Between checking IDs at the club where he worked as a bouncer, Sherrard began studying for the LSAT, hoping to get into law school. He passed, and he even earned a scholarship to St. Thomas University in Miami. In 2020, he graduated with honors and joined his father’s firm, Sherrard Law Group, the following year.
This past April, Sherrard and his wife founded The Miracle League of Martin County, a local chapter of the national nonprofit organization that provides opportunities for children with special needs to play baseball. Thirty-two kids participated in the organization’s inaugural season, which kicked off the evening of April 4 at Sailfish Park and ended with a closing ceremony May 23. Planning for a fall season is in full swing.
Sherrard’s goal is to give kids like his son the same opportunities as any other child. “We had a very difficult time finding something our son enjoyed doing,” he says. Johnny did love
necessary to start a Martin County chapter.
The ball games aren’t just an opportunity for kids to play but also for locals to get involved with the special needs community. At the games, each player is paired up with a volunteer or “buddy” who helps the player get up to the plate and swing the bat. Every child bats twice and gets a home run. There are no outs. Says Sherrard: “At the end of the game, we all do a victory lap.”
baseball, but being special needs, he wasn’t able to play in the local leagues around Martin County, says Sherrard. He had heard about The Miracle League of Palm Beach County, and the family would make the commute so Johnny could participate. But with two other young children at home, the distance was challenging.
“It didn’t make sense why Palm Beach County was able to have this program, which was so successful, and we didn’t have that,” says Sherrard. So he contacted the corporate offices of The Miracle League and filled out the paperwork
Stuart resident Chandra Rivers says the experience has been life-changing for her 11-year-old son, Bohdi, who has severe nonverbal autism and drug-resistant epilepsy. “Families of those with neurodivergent children struggle in Martin County to find therapies, camps, activities, and sports for their kids,” she says. “I can’t even convey how much it means to families like mine to watch their child run the bases and hear the cheering from the stands.”
Miracle League games are open to the public, and volunteers and donations are always needed and appreciated. “My goal is to raise funds to expand and make this as big as I can,” says Sherrard. Learn more and register as a player or volunteer at miracleleagueofmc.org. ❖

Bill Wachter’s Fountain 38 Tournament Edition combines the speed of the brand’s original race boats and the comfort and functionality of a family fishing vessel
by GEORGE LABONTEAlook back to the birth of Fountain Power Boats in 1979 reveals the beginning of a legacy rooted in the fast-paced world of offshore racing. At its helm was Reggie Fountain, one of the most successful names in the history of racing. At the forefront of the performance scene throughout the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s, Fountain was constantly trying to improve hull designs, eventually setting numerous race boat world records.
As the boatbuilding market evolved, race boat interest would begin to lose ground in favor of fishing boats. With the popularity of center consoles for fishing growing, the Fountain brand evolved with the industry, and soon the best qualities of a fast performance hull and an offshore fishing platform merged. In today’s demanding marketplace, performance, fishability, and comfort share equal importance.
For Jupiter resident Bill Wachter and his family—wife, Jill, and 12-year-old daughter, Claire—a boat that checked all three boxes was on their short list after Wachter’s retirement. First and foremost, a serious fishing platform was critically important. With Wachter’s sights set on becoming more proficient at offshore fishing, the search for a tournament-rigged center console began. Considering the needs of his family, adequate seating and a comfortable platform for relaxing were both essential.

Finally, with plans to begin construction on a new home in the Bahamas’ Abaco Islands, this boat would need to be able to quickly transport the family back and forth to Green Turtle Cay once their new vacation home was completed and be useful for recreation around Jupiter too.
The Fountain 38 Tournament Edition got the final nod from the Wachters. The 38TE is racy yet very comfortable and boasts a variety of features that combine tournament rigging and cruising comfort. The boat is equipped with 52 rod holders, twin 50-gallon live wells, seven fish boxes, a 380-quart insulated coffin box, and a tackle station/rigging center. There are matching forward-facing seats in the bow with backrests, a large sun pad lounge (also

This Fountain 38TE is rigged with triple Mercury 300-hp V-8 Verados offering a top speed of 70 mph and a cruising range of 557 miles. This is an ideal setup for Bahamian adventures and crossing the Gulf Stream, from both speed and range standpoints.
The race boat roots of the Fountain brand aren’t completely a thing of the past. With the max-rated quad 450R power option installed, a blistering top speed of over 90 mph is attainable for the adrenaline junkie. ❖
Hobe Sound resident George LaBonte is a professional captain and a world-class angler who has run a successful local charter fishing operation for 40 years. He was the host of a pair of widely acclaimed boating-related TV shows that aired nationally for five years, as well as a popular radio show on ESPN for 20 years. Dream TEENAGE
Jupiter teen Serenity Arce sang her way to fame on season 25 of The Voice, making it to the semifinals’ top nineBY VALERIE STAGGS
Within minutes of sitting down at Crux Coffee Roasters in Abacoa with 17-year-old Serenity Arce, a man approaches. “Are you on The Voice?” he asks excitedly. Arce shyly replies, “Yes,” and the man points at a smiling woman seated nearby. “My wife loves you!” he says. Arce smiles and gives a polite “Thank you,” clearly still getting used to her new celebrity status.
This was in April, while the then Jupiter Community High School junior was back home waiting to find out if she had made it to the “lives,” the part of the NBC competition show where the top 12 singers perform live for votes. Shortly after that day in the coffee shop, she found out she’d made it and was off to Los Angeles to continue her journey. She earned enough votes from America to make it all the way to the semifinals—the top nine contestants—before being cut May 14.
The experience and the connections she made
along the way have afforded Arce more opportunities in the pursuit of her dream, and she hopes there are still more to come. She cites past young winners of The Voice as inspiration, like pop country singers Danielle Bradbery and Cassadee Pope, who went on to successful careers in the music industry.
Arce started singing, dancing, and acting at ArtStage Performing Arts Center in Jupiter at age 7. “I was doing ballet, hip-hop, jazz, and musical theater,” she recalls. “I was always humming or dancing, so my parents encouraged me.” At 14, she began pursuing competitive dance, eventually joining the South Florida–based Off-Set Crew and competing with the hip-hop group at the acclaimed World of Dance competition in 2022.
In 2021, one of her dance teachers sent her an ad on Instagram looking for contestants for the upcoming season of The Voice, and Arce decided to give it a shot. She did her first casting call online, and it snowballed from there. “I was straight out of eighth grade, and I
was freaking out,” she says. “It was the biggest thing I’d ever done.” She went through numerous rounds of casting, submitting videos of her singing, and interviewing with casting agents—and that summer, she was invited to Los Angeles for the show’s blind auditions, where the contestants perform with their backs to the stage so they are judged solely on their singing voice without the judges seeing what they look like. If a judge likes what they hear, they turn their chair.
“It was very surreal because I still wasn’t processing the fact that I was going to L.A. to audition for a TV show that I’d watched incredible singers perform on,” says Arce. She stepped on stage in front of the four celebrity judges—Blake Shelton, Ariana Grande, John Legend, and Kelly Clarkson—and sang “I See Red” by Everybody Loves an Outlaw. When the song ended, she felt good about her performance, but none of the judges turned their chairs to indicate their interest in having her on their team. “Blake [Shelton] was the most critical,” recalls Arce. “He said that if they moved me forward, I wouldn’t make it very far. But he also said he could see me
doing well in another two years.”
She took those words to heart, and for the next two years, she worked hard to hone her craft. “I started writing my own music and doing my own vocal warm-up training at home, periodically going to a professional vocal trainer,” she says. “That period of time was me figuring out what type of artist I wanted to be and what type of music I wanted to make.” She explored different music genres, gravitating toward R&B. When the auditions for season 25 came around in 2023, Arce was ready.
“I reached out [to The Voice team], and they said they would love to have me back,” she says.
So last summer, she once again found herself stepping on stage for the blind auditions, this time in front of judges John Legend, Reba McEntire, Chance the Rapper, and Dan + Shay. She chose to sing “This City” by Sam Fischer, a song much closer to her heart. “[In my mind], I kind of dedicated the song to Jupiter, my city,” says Arce. “It’s like, I don’t know where I’m going yet, but I will always have my city.”
Less than 20 seconds into her audition, all four judges turned their chairs. “They all turned at the same time, and they were all staring at me,” says Arce. “It was scary! But I just told myself to keep going and stay in the song.”
Now Arce had a big decision to make—
“ I’M PROUD OF THE PERFORMANCES I GAVE AND THE EMOTION IN THEM. I CHOSE THE PATH OF VULNERABILITY, AND I MADE SOME PEOPLE CRY.”
which star should she choose as her coach? She was torn between Legend and Chance. Legend was one of the judges who didn’t turn for her in 2021—and Chance happily reminded her of that. “If I was here two years ago, I would have turned,” Chance told her. In the end, Arce chose Team Chance. “I felt he was more up my alley with his hip-hop background,” she says. “I just felt more connected to him as an artist.”
Arce says being coached by a huge star like Chance the Rapper was an amazing experience. “When you’re talking to him, it feels like you are talking to a normal person,” she says. “He is so down-to-earth and chill. He gave me constructive feedback and helped me find my voice.”
With Chance’s help, Arce beat out Nashville artist Bri Fletcher in the battle rounds. She moved on to the knockouts and bested singer-songwriter Dani Stacy, advancing to the playoffs. Then it was time for each of the coaches to select the three artists they wanted to keep on their team for the live performance shows—the top 12. Arce remained on Team
Chance and flew back to L.A. to compete in the lives.
With viewers now voting for their favorite performances, Arce made it through week one, finding herself in the semifinals’ top nine. But when America voted for the top five finalists the following week, she didn’t make the cut.
Arce looks back on her experience fondly. “I’m proud of the performances I gave and the emotion in them,” she says. “I chose the path of vulnerability, and I made some people cry.”
One of those people is her mom, Tammie. “My mom cried at every episode,” says Arce. “Both of my parents are very proud of me, and my little brother told everyone about me. I have all these third graders following me now. It’s really cool.”
She is now focused on putting some of the songs that have been floating around in her head on paper. “I have scraps of different songs I’ve thought of,” she says. “I want to take writing more seriously.” Her dream is to one day land a recording contract, and she hopes her experience on The Voice will help her get there.
Her professional career recently hit another milestone after artist Sam Fischer saw her performance of his song, “This City,” on Instagram and commented on the post. Arce says she was blown away that a celebrity noticed her performance—and it led to her being invited on tour with Fischer in June! Says Arce: “I just hope more doors continue to open for me.” Follow Serenity on Instagram: @serenity.arce ❖

DRIVE TIME ~3.5hours
America’s most ancient metropolis is a dream for history buffs
STAY
Built in 1888, the perennially extraordinary Casa Monica Resort & Spa, Autograph Collection (kesslercollection. com/casa-monica/) sits in the heart of St. Augustine’s Historic District. At check-in, patrons are treated to a glass of champagne before being escorted to one of the 138 guest rooms, including 14 multilevel Landmark Suites. No stranger to celebrities and dignitaries—like Spanish royals King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia, who visited in 2001—this grande dame carefully keeps one foot in the past and the other in the present. Last year, the AAA Four Diamond–rated property replaced its tapas-style restaurant with the Cordova Coastal Chophouse & Bar, whose cuisine reflects the flavors of southern Spain and Morocco. Part of an estimated $3 million renovation, a lobby refresh and makeovers to the guest rooms are also in the works.
Once the home of the Dow Museum of Historic Houses, The Collector Luxury Inn & Gardens (thecollectorinn.com) features nine historic buildings including the Dow House, which was built in 1839 and later purchased by Charles Dow. Guest rooms mix vintage touches with modern amenities like kitchenettes and walkin showers with rainwater showerheads. The property also boasts a pool and gardens with lawn games, as well as one of the friendliest bars in town—The Well.
The century-old bar serves light bites and well-crafted cocktails made with liquors infused with herbs from the kitchen’s on-site garden. After a complimentary continental breakfast, guests can walk or bicycle to nearby attractions like the Colonial Quarter (colonialquarter.com), which recently welcomed the Gallegos House, a historic home built in 1720 with materials made from oyster shells, sand, and lime that showcases colonial life in St. Augustine.
EXPLORE
Take a guided tour and see the cobblestone-festooned city through the eyes of a local expert. Old Town Trolley Tours (trolleytours.com/st-augustine) features one of the best modes of transport and simplifies the process of navigating the first city of postcolonial America. Filled with interesting and thoughtprovoking narration, these daily tours visit more than 100 points of interest including Flagler College and the seventeenth-century
Spanish fort Castillo de San Marcos. In addition to unlimited on-off boarding, tickets include admission to St. Augustine’s History Museum and free shuttle service to Alligator Farm and other exciting points of interest.
For a history tour with a Jazz Age vibe, book a 90-minute sightseeing odyssey with Pastime Tours (pastimetours.com), where you’ll ride around town in a Model T–inspired vehicle commandeered by history-savvy guides clad in Jazz Age–style regalia.
Indulge your last night in paradise with a spectacular sunset sail aboard the Freedom, St. Augustine’s only tall ship (schooner freedom.com). Owners John and Sarah Zaruba, who also host daily sails and midnight sojourns aboard the stunning 76-foot, gaffrigged topsail schooner, do not follow a set sailing path but are sticklers for finding the best spots to watch the final moments of the golden hour with their guests. Tickets include complimentary champagne and refreshments, lively musical entertainment, and possible dolphin and other marine life sightings.
EAT & DRINK
Many of St. Auggie’s top culinary destinations are located within heritage buildings and other historic landmark settings. The Old City House Inn & Restaurant (oldcityhouse inn.com), which specializes in Latin American and Mediterraneanstyle staples like pork osso bucco and chicken Milanese with chimichurri, is ensconced in a former stable house that once served Henry Flagler’s hotels. And a half-mile northeast, Meehan’s Irish Pub & Seafood House (meehans irishpub.com) serves standout pub fare inside a
former Gilded Age mansion that commands breathtaking views of the Matanzas River, Anastasia Island, and beyond. At one time, the site also served as a repository for construction materials used to build the Castillo de San Marcos, located 150 feet away.
A locals’ favorite, Ice Plant Bar (iceplantbar.com) is an upscale cocktail den set inside an Art Deco building where ice was once made and cut for the local shrimping industry. Bartenders hand-carve ice for the delicious cocktails, crafted mostly with house-made ingredients and spirits from small producers like the adjacent St. Augustine Distillery. After a long day of exploring, cool down with a Cool Runnings, made with orange juice, rum blend Licor 43, rose hips, strawberry, and Jamaican bitters and topped with a scoop of shaved ice.
DETOUR
Take a drive over the Bridge of Lions to the barrier island and visit the St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological (alligatorfarm.com), a must-visit for wildlife lovers. Founded in 1893, the attraction houses hundreds of reptiles, mammals, and birds including 24 crocodilian species ranging from the albino alligator to the critically endangered Indian gharial. Don’t forget to say hello to the zoo’s largest resident, a 15-foot, 1,250-pound saltwater crocodile named “Maximo.” And if you’re feeling adventurous, take the 45- to 90-minute Crocodile Crossing zipline tour and soar over lemurs, crocs, and more.

Islamorada
A bohemian-glam vibe and endless aquatic adventures
STAY
Since opening its doors in 1987, Moorings Village (themooringsvillage.com) at Mile Marker 81.5 has become a not-so-hidden gem among location scouts in fashion and television production. (See our fashion shoot at the location on page 52!) In the Netflix series Bloodline, the Rayburn family residence is represented by the Moorings’ Blue Charlotte, a breathtaking 6,000-square-foot vacation home outfitted with luxurious guest rooms, a chef’s eat-in kitchen, an expansive veranda, and an 18-meter swimming pool. The pristine oceanfront location spans 18 vibrant acres and is dotted with more than 800 palm trees and orchid-lined pathways leading to a secluded white sand beach, where swaying hammocks lazily beckon. Despite eight private cottages that could each house a large, rambunctious family, the resort always manages to feel intimate, tranquil, and utterly magical.
The Islands of Islamorada (theislandsofislamorada.com) is another serene enclave where relaxation takes center stage. Designed with couples and multigenerational vacations in mind, the property’s one-bedroom ocean suites and four-bedroom, triple-story villas are packed with upscale features ranging from full kitchens and private elevators to verdant outdoor living spaces inspired by spectacular seascapes. And with so many on-property amenities (a state-of-the-art gym, pool, private beach,
pickleball courts, a driving green with biodegradable golf balls) and complimentary watersports like sailing, kayaking, and paddleboarding, guests may ponder whether leaving the property is even necessary.
EXPLORE
In Islamorada, it’s easy to get up close and personal with local sea life. At Theater of the Sea (theaterofthesea.com), admission comes with dolphin, sea lion, and parrot shows; a bottomless boat ride; plenty of tropical fish, shark, sea turtle, stingray, alligator, and crocodile sightings; and access to a lagoon-style beach. For a once-in-a-lifetime experience, visitors can swim with dolphins or sea lions in a tropical lagoon trimmed with native foliage.
Take advantage of Islamorada’s best feature by paddling your way around. Located at Robbie’s Marina (robbies.com), the Kayak Shack (kayakthefloridakeys.com) rents watercraft and offers solo and guided tours. Nearby destinations include a mangrove canopy system inhabited by manatees, stingrays, and nurse sharks and Indian Key Historic State Park, an 11-acre barrier once home to an old wrecking colony and ringed by living coral reefs that make it a prime spot for snorkeling.
Outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy both swimming and hiking will want to take advantage of Captain Samantha Zeher’s private ecotours. Zeher, who has a degree in marine biology, operates Keyz Charters (keyzcharters.com), shuttling guests to popular landmarks like Alligator Lighthouse, Cheeca Rocks, and Lignumvitae Key Botanical State Park aboard a 21-foot deck boat (docked at Robbie’s Marina). Along the way, she shares interesting facts about local history, wildlife, and ecosystems.
EAT & DRINK
Dubbed the “sportfishing capital of the world,” Islamorada certainly makes it easy to reel in some great aquatic fare. A few standouts: the tilefish sautéed with blue crab, shitake mushrooms, capers, and Key lime cream sauce at Chef Michael Ledwith’s eponymous 40-seat eatery, Chef Michael’s (foodtotalk about.com); the gourmet grilled cheese and lobster sandwich at Cheeca Lodge (cheeca.com), made with creamy brie cheese on sourdough bread; and the snapper ceviche at Marker 88 (marker88.net), which is bursting with flavor enhanced by a light dusting of cilantro,
pink peppercorn, and Fresno chili. You can’t go to the Keys and not indulge in a little Key lime magic. Stop by Islamorada Brewery & Distillery (islamorada breweryanddistillery.com) for a Perfect Key Lime Pie Martini, and indulge in Key lime pie made with a macadamia nut and Rice Krispies crust at the Green Turtle Inn (greenturtleinn.com). It just might be the tastiest slice in the state.
DETOUR
Grab your underwater gear and visit Florida’s Coral Reef, the world’s third-largest coral barrier reef, which extends from the Dry Tortugas to the St. Lucie Inlet. Just 21 miles north of Islamorada, you can catch a boat at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park (pennekamppark.com) to access the reef, where you can snorkel or scuba dive past rocky shoals teaming with vibrant brain, elkhorn, and star coral as well as top-notch dive sites like theChrist of the Abyss near Dry Rocks, whose outstretched arms are viewable from the ocean’s surface. Tours/equipment rental are available at the John Pennekamp Dive Shop.

STAY
St. Pete boasts many star properties, but few can eclipse The Don CeSar (doncesar.com). The legendary “Pink Palace,” built in 1928, has welcomed its share of famous guests ranging from U.S. presidents to Hollywood elite. Having completed a full-site renovation less than two years ago, the stunning National Historic Landmark property overlooks the Gulf of Mexico in St. Pete Beach and offers six restaurants and lounges, an award-winning spa, a new state-of-the-art fitness center, and a private beach with spectacular Gulf Coast views. Guests can opt to stay in one of 277 guest rooms or take up residence a half-mile away in the spacious and family-friendly Beach House Suites. About 10 miles away on St. Pete’s bay side is The Vinoy Resort & Golf Club, Autograph Collection (thevinoy.com). The luxurious, cotton candy–hued resort is oozing with charm and is celebrating its
platinum anniversary with some new amenities including a 2,000-square-foot spa. Guests can also enjoy the private marina, 10 Har-Tru green clay tennis courts, and an 18-hole championship golf course designed by Ron Garl.
EXPLORE
When you’re ready to head out for the day, a good place to start is the St. Pete Pier (stpetepier.org), which is teeming with restaurants, art installations, and manicured green spaces.
Then head over to The Dalí Museum (thedali.org) to explore the Spanish surrealist’s masterworks and the new Dalí Dome, which stands 39 feet high and 60 feet in diameter and houses Dalí Alive 360°, a multisensory experience with surround sound and digital artwork splashed from floor to ceiling. Next, stop by Morean’s Chihuly Collection (morean artcenter.org) to check out a treasure trove of unique creations by renowned
blown-glass artist Dale Chihuly. And just a few blocks west in the Warehouse Arts District is Fairgrounds St. Pete, a one-ofa-kind art-meets-technology experience complete with whimsical exhibits, immersive scavenger hunts, and rooms filled with lighting and sound.
EAT & DRINK
Kick off a day of arts and culture at The Library (thelibrarystpete.com). The eatery at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital puts a bibliophilic spin on Sunday brunch with book-lined walls and cozy
nooks for eating and reading. Indulge in gourmet breakfast items like the French toast stack, braised beef cheek Benedict, and maple Snickerdoodle pancakes.
If you’re staying at The Don CeSar, you’re in luck because the resort is home to a AAA Four Diamond restaurant, Maritana. Chef Jason Kohl prepares American and Spanish delicacies like fresh-caught hogfish and Iberico pork with shishito peppers. Within walking distance, you will find Beach Drive, a popular street among epicureans. Nestled between downtown St. Pete and the waterfront, Beach Drive is home to stellar foodie options like Allelo (allelo.com), a Mediterranean restaurant lauded for its seafood-centric fare like grilled Spanish octopus with melon, blueberries, and goat cheese and a 1,200-bottle wine list that nabbed the 2023 Wine Spectator Award of Excellence. And Stillwaters Tavern (stillwaterstavern.com) is a delicious scratch kitchen and bar that serves contemporary American cuisine and flamboyant cocktails. Located across from the Museum of Fine Art, it’s also an excellent spot for people-watching. Feeling hopsy? Head to the trendy Edge District and order a pint at Webb’s City Cellar, a 2024 James Beard semifinalist for Outstanding Bar (and one of two taprooms at St. Pete’s first microbrewery, Green Bench Brewing Co.). The
brews here are served in nucleated glassware with bubble activators to keep them nice and foamy to the last sip (greenbenchbrewing. com/webbs-city-cellar). ❖
DETOUR
If you have time, a quick excursion to Gigglewaters (gigglewaters. com) is worth the short drive. Just 20 miles north of St. Pete in Safety Harbor, the Prohibition-style bar and eatery has a “secret” 33-seat movie theater, where you can catch a classic flick while enjoying full service from the bar/restaurant.

Tequila vs. Mezcal
The main difference between the two spirits is that mezcal can be made using up to 50 different varieties of agave including espadín, tobalá, and tepeztate, while tequila is made with only one—the blue Weber agave. It’s the piña of the agave plant, the round stem that looks like a pineapple, that’s used to make the spirit. Once harvested, the piña is cooked to soften its fibers, and the sugar derived from its starches is used in the distillation process. And here lies another difference: tequila traditionally cooks the agave by steaming it in above-ground
ovens, while most mezcal roasts its agave in wood-fired, underground rock pits, which often lends the distinctive smoky notes associated with the spirit. Another vital distinction: most tequilas use commercial yeast; mezcal ferments naturally during the fermentation stage. Finally, the two spirits are produced in different regions of Mexico. Tequila’s production is limited to Jalisco and parts of five other states, whereas mezcal, although largely made in Oaxaca, can be produced in a total of nine Mexican states. ❖
