Art and Culture Revival

“T

he Creek” has arrived. Finally, our town’s cultural stops will have a chance for visual artists, musicians, and the culinary arts. The Creek is the new area of downtown Stuart that has been designated as our Arts and Entertainment District.

Many of us know of the fantastic gallery establishments downtown, such as Gallery 36 and The Kling Gallery, and businesses like Wave Hair Salon have undoubtedly added some tremendous art to their shops, but now it’s official.

Galleries, performing arts, and food establishments will be hosting events every Friday night on-site, all free to the public. Watch for them to be listed on our website and through our Insider’s Guide newsletter.

Art is nothing new to us in Martin County.

Our Arts Council does a fantastic job of keeping the arts alive nightly. Just looking at the calendar on the Arts Council of Martin County website is enough to make your head spin. Be sure to check out afternoon watercolor classes, mosaic studio pop-ups, Mardi Gras Fridays with a live ragtime duo at The Garden Bar at Notes, and so much more.

In St. Lucie County, there is the St. Lucie Cultural Alliance. This organization only started in 2018, but it is growing quickly. Take a look at the Arts in Public Places, and opportunities and workshops on their website. We know they have great things in store for 2020 and beyond.

This month, take an art class you have always wanted to try or go on an art tour. Either way, we look forward to seeing you at The Creek!

By Megan Ayscue WHO THEY ARE: Rachel, 27, is an optometry resident at the VA while Alex, 27, is a data scientist at the Columbus Crew Soccer Club.

HOW THEY MET: Rachel and Alex met while in college. When they went out to dinner with mutual friends, Rachel tried to start a conversation with Alex, but he was too shy to reciprocate.

Rachel knew she wanted to get to know him better, so they began talking more and after a couple of months the two started dating.

HOW THEY KNEW THEY FOUND THE ONE: Alex says he noticed there was something different about Rachel. “I couldn’t get her out of my head,” he says. “I felt like I could always trust her and be happy with her by my side every day.” Rachel knew right away that Alex was the one. “I could be my truest self with him from the very beginning,” she says. “In Alex I have a partner who shares the same life goals as me, encourages me, makes me laugh, feel safe, and feel incredibly loved.”

ON THE PROPOSAL: Rachel had never been to Franklin Park Conservatory in Columbus, Ohio, and she wanted to see the holiday lights there. Once inside, the couple found a bench where they could have a moment alone. “We found this cute secluded bench that had tropical leaves and plants, which reminded me of Florida, where I grew up,” Rachel says. Alex could barely speak

throughout the night because of his nerves. “Once we were all alone, I finally was able to speak words and ask her to marry me,” he says. He used the same phrasing to ask Rachel to be his wife as he did when he first asked her to be his girlfriend.

ON THE LOCATION: While the couple lives in Ohio, Rachel grew up in Stuart. When it came time to pick a ceremony site, they knew Snug Harbor Marina near her parents was the perfect spot. “The marina overlooks the river and provided such a cozy and personal environment to get married,” Rachel says. “For the reception… the views at The Mansion at Tuckahoe were stunning and we fell in love with that venue when we first walked around.”

ON THE THEME: The couple envisioned a simple, elegant, and

romantic wedding, but they also knew they wanted to include a tropical touch. The bouquets, boutonnieres, and table decorations featured orchids and palm leaves with accents of tropical flowers.

The food also had a tropical flair with selections such as coconut chicken with mango salsa, beef with chimichurri sauce, and coconut lime pineapple rice.

ON THE “FIRST TOUCH”: Alex wanted to keep with tradi-

tion, so the couple opted not to have a first look. Instead, before the ceremony, they stood back-to-back for a “first touch” to talk about their excitement and swap love notes.

istorante Claretta in Palm City is renowned locally and beyond for its classic Northern Italian cuisine and top-notch service. It is owned and operated by the Ingegnoli family; Christina manages the dining room, taking each order personally, and her brother Francesco is the chef. The interior is warmly lit and cozy, with an intimate dining room and a small bar area at the front serving beer and wine.

Claretta’s menu features a variety of appetizers, pasta dishes, and entrées. My husband and I began our meal by sharing the bruschetta; a dice of bright red, garlic-infused tomatoes atop crisp crostini—perfetto!

For our next course, we each had a half-portion of chef Francesco’s specialty: fresh, house-made pasta. I had the potato gnocchi alla Sorren-

tina—pillowy nuggets in a basil tomato sauce—and it was excellent. My husband’s ribbon-like taglierini were glossed with a light, creamy sauce and dotted with crispy bits of prosciutto and asparagus.

For my entrée, I chose the veal scallopini with capers and lemon. I’ve had this dish at many other restaurants, but this was by far the best version I’ve tried. The veal was pounded so tender and thin it melted in my mouth. My husband ordered the beef filet with peppercorn.

The filet was perfectly cooked and exceptionally tender, glazed with a creamy and slightly piquant peppercorn sauce.

For dessert, we selected the Trio Claretta: miniature portions of tiramisu, crème brûleé, and chocolate mousse. It was an indulgent ending to an outstanding, authentic Italian meal.

CAPITALIZING ON SMALL SPACES

U

nused spaces in a home can take on purpose by creating a nook, adding both value to the home and resident’s life. A nook can provide a place to eat, read, relax, meditate, exercise, or stay organized.

Even house pets can utilize these small spaces.

Consider the areas in your home you can maximize by repurposing their functions.

Built-in shelves or an unused closet can be redesigned into a snack or coffee bar. A small breakfast area can be transformed into a gathering spot by adding banquette seating with comfy cushions and a table to share.

Converting a space into a reading nook is one of the easiest and most inexpensive transformations. A cozy chair, pillows, blankets, and decent lighting are all that are needed.

This can be done in an alcove under the stairs, the recessed area of a bay window, or even the corner of a room.

These same areas can also be repurposed into a place for the family pet. Pets require little room, so their nook can even be created under a decorative table or countertop.

Carving out an area to exercise may be trickier, but if there is a designated, pleasing place for small equipment to be kept, it could encourage more activity.

Create family command centers to stay organized at entryways, in laundry rooms, or even on an open wall. These areas are often vertical, or minimally horizontal, making for the perfect place for calendars, organizers, and reminders.

Think about what kind of nook best meets your needs and then assess your home for an area where it can be created. If you need inspiration, go to Pinterest and search for “nooks” for countless ideas on creating a well-purposed space.

HANDLE WITH CARE

A

s anglers, we spend every adventure learning new techniques. Eventually, the means and manner of angling become muscle memory. However, from time to time, I find myself imparting sensibility when handling a fish. I’ve seen plenty of anglers finesse a fish into their grasp, but anglers with too much adrenaline can rip the hook out of the fish incorrectly and mistreat it.

While fish are tough, they are not invulnerable to rough, improper handling. Removing a hook should be done delicately and quickly. I recommend keeping a pair of thin, long-nosed pliers on hand to assist with speedier hook removal.

When it comes to a fish’s safety, a good rule of thumb is as long as you can hold your breath underwater, that’s about the length of time a fish has out of the water.

While your catch is in your care, gently remove the hook while keeping the fish in water as much as possible. If your catch is out of the water for a good amount of time, revive it by subtly splashing water back and forth over the gills, using the tail as leverage.

Keep in mind that fish are equipped with natural defenses, such as creating a slime when threatened. Be careful not to handle a fish with bare hands too much or you will remove that slime and damage the fish’s natural defenses. Also, never grab a fish out of water by the belly or gills.

When fishing from a bridge or tall structure, be aware that lifting a fish out of the water can dramatically decrease its chances for survival. Thus, having a net is essential.

During an offshore jaunt, your bottom fish will be rising from the deep. Be sure to have the proper tool handy to deflate the swim bladder. Gently release the air-filled bladder to allow the fish to retain buoyancy in deep waters once released and returned to the deep blue.

A Rare Talent

International countertenor Terry Barber cherishes his Treasure Coast ties, returning to perform and support budding local talent through a nonprofit he founded in Stuart

W

hile his classically trained voice has awarded him the spotlight on the world’s most renowned stages—from the Metropolitan Opera to Moscow’s Svetlanov Hall—vocalist Terry Barber knows there’s no place like the Treasure Coast.

“It will always be one of my homes, no matter where I live,” Barber says.

The area is fortunate to have him: Barber is a countertenor—the rarest voice type—which means he can sing comfortably in the range women sing.

“In the pop music world, that is not strange,” Barber explains. “People don’t think twice when they hear Sam Smith or Frankie Valli or the Bee Gees. But when you use a classical singing technique and sing in that same range, people’s eyes kind of pop out of their heads.”

Now based in the Northeast and the father of 10-year-old twins, Barber first moved to South Florida in 2007 to be near family in Palm City and Port St. Lucie. While working with a major cancer organization in the wake of losing his mother, Barber began to recog-

nize the need for an advocate between artists and the charities they support.

In 2009, he founded Artists for a Cause, a nonprofit organization that encourages visual art and performance professionals to use their talents for community improvement, positing the arts as a unique solution to many critical issues.

“I’ve been able to help hundreds of artists in the Treasure Coast to use their talent to meet all kinds of different needs,” explains Barber. Examples include providing music or art enrichment programs to the elderly or using dance to feed the poor or comfort the sick. “All the programs have a dual impact in that they support artists first and then help them use their talent to meet a need in the community. It’s not ever art for art’s sake, which I do a lot in my own career, but that’s not the point of this organization.”

Through Artists for a Cause, Barber also supports local up-and-coming talent by involving them in his own tours, providing an opportunity for professional experience, mentorship and coaching. One such artist is Palm City’s Eliza Levy, who will join Barber’s tour in northern New York this month.

“Eliza is an outstanding vocalist and becoming quite an actress and dancer as well,” Barber says. “Her goal is Broadway, I believe.

One of the things I really like about her talent is the range of sounds that she can make with excellence.”

Barber, too, uses his talent in a range of styles, from popular music to rock to opera.

He was recently the featured entertainer at the Arts Council of Martin County’s fortieth anniversary gala, where he performed works in Italian—he’s sung in 16 languages so far— and his lauded Freddie Mercury tribute production returns home to The Lyric Theatre on April 17.

A lifelong learner—he has a master’s degree in historically informed performance from Trinity College London—Barber prepared the program “by reading five biographies about Freddie” and listening to live interviews, enabling him to understand and thus share with audiences the larger-than-life persona of Queen’s legendary frontman.

“I want to make art and music for everybody,” Barber says. “My biggest goal as an artist—and, I think, the greatest goal of any artist—should be to make people feel.”

History and Storytelling New York Times bestselling author Michael Tougias will speak at Stuart Library this month on one of his latest books, Above & Beyond

M

ichael Tougias never imagined he would become a published writer—let alone a New York Times bestselling author. Born in Massachusetts, Tougias spent the majority of his early career in the business world. As an escape from his every day, he began moonlighting as a writer—and then he got his big break.

“I made writing a high priority,” he says.

“With Ten Hours Until Dawn: The True Story of Heroism and Tragedy Aboard the Can Do, it became a national bestseller and enabled me to start writing part-time. Then, The Finest Hours did so well that it became a movie and I was able to go full-time.”

Tougias, who resides in Hobe Sound, has since authored and co-authored 29 books, with more in the works. Among his bestsellers are The Finest Hours, which was transformed into a Disney Motion Picture in January 2016, as well as Fatal Forecast, Overboard!, King Philip’s War, and There’s A Porcupine In My Outhouse: The Vermont Misadventures of a Mountain Man Wannabe.

Tougias also lectures across the country on each of his books, offering leadership and inspirational programs for business groups and organizations.

This month, Tougias will visit the Stuart Library to discuss Above & Beyond: John F. Kennedy and America’s Most Dangerous Cold War Spy Mission. The nonfiction book, which was released in 2018, brings readers back to 1962, chronicling the Cuban Missile Crisis and the days that followed.

What’s your secret to becoming a successful writer, especially as a second career?

The first would be persistence. Time and time again, that has served me well. For example, Ten Hours Until Dawn was rejected by 35 publishers. Now, 15 years after I landed a publisher, it’s still available in print. I didn’t let those 35 rejections stop me. Writing is very subjective. You just have to find the right fit.

As far as the writing goes, I’m not a believer that you have to pump out so many words per day. Some days I don’t write at all.

What’s next for you?

I’m taking my adult books and adapting them to young readers. It’s been a pleasant surprise to see how well received they’ve been.

While I’m supposed to be semi-retired, I worked so hard to get to a certain point [that] I don’t want it to end. Writing is a great way to keep my mind fully engaged. My dream of becoming a full-time writer is still very much ingrained in me. I’ll be writing until I can’t anymore.

What are your tips on landing a book deal?

I really think people don’t put enough time into the proposal. Many publishing houses won’t get beyond your proposal—make it memorable. Put yourself in the shoes of the editor. What makes your book different?

That’s often what I talk about in my speaking engagements, finding true adventure stories that readers can relate to.

he property has a million-dollar view, but when the owner was not gazing at the St. Lucie River and wanted to watch TV, it was awkward. Her flat screen sat atop an electric fireplace in an odd spot that neither was aligned with the sofa nor at the proper height—and it was swallowed up by empty wall space. So, she reached out to Christine Regal, president of Regal Design in Jensen Beach, for help.

“The client called and was just very unhappy with the family room, which is the room where they hang out the most,” Regal says.

“The goal was to put the TV where it needed to be.”

They opted to build a custom cabinet— white with a teak top—that extends the full length of the room. The left half houses the television, and the right half houses the fireplace. The space around it was framed with grass cloth and wrapped in LED lighting. A ceramic bowl holding an exotic orchid arrangement offsets the design.

“It’s not symmetrical, but we wanted it that way,” Regal says. “We wanted it more contemporary, more modern.”

erry Allabastro of Allabastro Designs in Stuart describes the living room she was hired to update as “horrible.” Emerald carpet covered an unfinished wood floor. Incandescent bulbs made for a dim atmosphere.

Bulky beams crisscrossed the ceiling.

“It was never redone,” Allabastro says of the ’80s-era structure.

Allabastro stripped the floor and ceiling and tore out the wall that separated the kitchen. The beadboard was removed as was the under-used fireplace.

“She wanted it to be bright and airy to entertain in,” Allabastro says. “She wanted clean lines.”

White oak was laid down, and the immaculately detailed ceiling now features recessed lighting. All drywall and molding are new.

“We heavily accented the design with blue because that’s what she wanted,” Allabastro says, referring to the upholstered chairs, window treatments, and rustic side table.

The room was part of a total renovation of the 3,200-square-foot, two-story, colonialstyle residence that took two years to complete.

“I think it turned out beautifully,” Allabastro says. “It is exactly what she envisioned. She just wanted everybody to feel welcome, and she is happy.”

liminating a wall and elevating the curtains give grace and grandeur to the sacred spot where memorable meals are served. One glance at the before-and-after pictures and onlookers might not realize it is the same house.

“There’s a lot more light and a feeling of openness,” Francesca Morgan, owner of Francesca Morgan Interiors in Stuart, says of the dining room, which leads out to the patio and pool. “Your view now is panoramic.”

Morgan achieved this by running the window treatments from

the ceiling to the floor, creating hefty height. Establishing a flow between the dining room and living room resulted in added volume.

“I think a lot of people know when I do a room because of the window treatments,” she says. “It makes the room. That’s the wow right there—sort of like the icing on the cake.”

She selected a coastal print and paired it with a cool solid—both in linen for an airy softness that fulfilled her client’s vision. An orb chandelier hangs above the 10-top table.

“I love this room,” she says. “It showcases the architecture.”

he strange color was unappetizing, the wood cabinets were unappealing, and the dingy floor was unsightly.

None of it made for a pleasant kitchen. Still, Bianca Fathauer, owner of Splendid Home Design in Stuart, saw it had promise.

“Usually, clients who come in to see me want to replace all of their cabinets,” Fathauer says. “We added cabinets by matching and painting them.”

The strange color appeared in a trapped space adorned with odd plates and platters. By installing extra cabinets and making them white with opaque glass, Fathauer was able to imbue the kitchen with a clean and inviting look.

“Sometimes with remodels, you go into it thinking you have to gut absolutely everything,” she says. “Seventy-five percent is old cabinets.”

Faux-wood tile contrasts nicely with the island—painted in Sherwin-Williams’ ‘Tin Lizzie’—and chunky barstools.

“It was a little bit daunting, and it ended up being something I was extremely proud of and they were very happy with,” she says.

She posted photos of the redesign on Facebook, Instagram, and her website.

“We got so many comments,” she says. “People really liked it.”

ix-matched, poorly placed furniture, including a fullsize bed crammed into a corner, comprised a space that was supposed to be a retreat for family and friends. Instead, the mashup of random items made it more like an obstacle course than a guest bedroom.

“Their floorplan obviously was not working,” says Baylee Floyd, owner of Baylee Deyon Interior Design in Palm City. “The whole room was confused.”

Floyd’s client frequently hosts out-of-town visitors and wanted to transform the room into a tropical oasis with a bohemian vibe.

“They needed something that accommodated everyone and felt serene and at home,” she says. “We decided to go with sleek furniture and brighten it up with the decor.”

The accessories include beaded table lamps etched in a blackand-white, hieroglyphics-like pattern as well as a colorful area rug with a similar global-inspired theme. A vase filled with pampas grass adds a whimsical dimension, and an earthy-green accent wall ties it all together.

“It’s boho, but we went with all-white bedding to give it that hotel feel,” she says. “It’s welcoming now.”

LIVING, WORKING, AND PLAYING IN PALM CITY Locals will have to pardon the dust as the Community Redevelopment Agency pushes forward with a project that will bring Mapp Road up to speed in 2020

T

he heart of Palm City will beat louder than it has in its 108-year history when the Mapp Road Towncenter Project gets underway this month.

The renovation, redevelopment, and revitalization of a one-mile stretch of the street aims to create a cohesive, connected corridor that resonates with residents.

“That’s our vision, and that’s the vision of the community as well,” says Susan Kores, manager of the Martin County Office of Community Development. “This is going to be, in my mind,

a complete game changer for Palm City.”

Plans—15 years in the making—call for a mix of restaurants and retail to rise alongside pedestrian pathways and generous green spaces.

“That’s what’s going to entice people to walk around and mingle with each another,” Kores says. “We’ve already gotten some interest from developers and attracted some new investment.”

Property sales have spiked, as have submissions of applications to build. An ice-cream shop called Shark Shack Sweets opened a few months ago.

“That is the response that is meaningful,” Kores says. “We know the community wants it, but to have the developers, the investors, the property owners say, ‘Hey, this looks good,’ to me, that is almost more important.”

A quaint town square that provides a passive area to sit with friends, walk with children, or

sip a cup of coffee is also in the works.

“It’s really more a feel,” Kores says. “It’s going to feel like a town. It’s going to feel like this is the center of where I live. It will be a little bit of a destination.”

The design of the second phase of the project has been completed and approved, and the work has been put out to bid. It will take at least one year from start to finish. The first phase of the project spanned 2017-2018 and involved improvements to the infrastructure including fresh curbs and gutters, wider sidewalks, and room for bicycle lanes. In addition, a stormwater-treatment pond was created to reduce the all-too-common flooding problem and serve as an outdoor amenity.

“People are happy about it,” Kores says. She adds that while it’s rare to have a project everyone is behind, this one addresses some key concerns and seems to have excited a majority of the community. “We are extremely lucky to be able to put this vision to work.”

revenue from the 610-acre Community Redevelopment Agency plat within the Palm City boundary—will be well-spent.

“I ran again in 2016 to see the project brought back to life and moved forward,” says Ciampi, who originally served from 20082012 but choose not to seek reelection in the aftermath of the recession. “Day one, I reinstituted the CRA.” Between 2012-2016, amid economic uncertainty, the then-County Commission shelved the project and went ahead with others, most notably including the construction of the Veterans Memorial Bridge.

“I had my own frustration when hearing about all of the wonderful plans that never came to fruition—not for lack of trying,” Ciampi says. “You have to have all of these things come together—community support, political willingness, and financial feasibility. All of them aligned when I was back at the dais.”

An advocate for the aesthetics of the area, he is working with the Rotary Club of StuartSunrise on the planting of a butterfly garden and local artist Geoffrey Smith on the installation of a bronze sculpture. The commissioner also envisions wrapping traffic-light-control boxes in photographs of Florida birds.

“There are three or four on Mapp Road,” Ciampi says. “It’s just one of the small things that’s bringing some art to our community. It’s a nice little piece of the puzzle.

“We haven’t had, for a long time, a true heart of Palm City, and I think this revitalization of Mapp Road will bring us much closer to that goal,” he continues. “For the older folks who have lived here, it’s going to be worth the wait.

For the folks who have come here recently, it’s going to be exciting.”

“It’s going to disrupt my business, but it’s going to help it a lot,” Sentell says. “People have been waiting for this for a long time,

not just the people in the redevelopment area, but the people in the neighborhood.

I can’t wait for it to happen.”

The veterinarian, whose practice dates to 1981, chairs the Neighborhood Advisory Committee and leads public meetings to obtain input.

“I think it’s going to be a focal point for Palm City, a place for people to come and enjoy,” Sentell says. “Redoing Mapp Road is just going to make for a nice downtown feel.”

Missi Campbell, executive director of the Palm City Chamber of Commerce, agrees.

“Palm City has a lot to offer, and I think this is going to cap it off,” Campbell says.

“It’s going to be really cool.”

She anticipates the staging of events and festivals such as food-truck invasions and green markets on the central strip.

“The excitement level is going to be wonderful,” Campbell says. “It’s going to be like a whole new area. I think it’s going to increase people just hanging out in Palm City.”

Hanging out in Palm City is not unprecedented. There was a time, decades ago, when an earlier generation gathered at Crane Creek Ranch, turning an artesian well into a popular swimming hole.

“All the kids swam in that because there were no swimming pools in the ’50s,” says Boo Lowery, whose late stepfather William “Bill” Matheson owned the property, now Sandhill Cove Retirement Living. “Maybe

the Pelican Hotel and the Sunrise Inn in Stuart, but there was nothing in Palm City.”

Matheson settled here in 1940. A largeparcel landowner, he founded several businesses, among them a cattle ranch and a flower farm. Aside from that, a post office, grocery store, feed supplier, and butcher shop were all that comprised Palm City.

“We would go to the big city of Stuart,” Lowery laughs. “It’s big now, but Stuart was

little back then. It just seemed big.”

He says he thinks Matheson would approve of the Mapp Road Towncenter Project.

“I think he’d be for it,” Lowery says. “I think he’d like to see it done. He wanted the area to grow.”

Cassandra Bevis, owner and manager of Salon Appearances on Mapp Road, has watched Palm City transform from a retreat for snowbirds to a haven for families.

“We’ve seen so many changes,” says Bevis, who opened her salon in 2000. “I’m hopeful that the new Mapp Road will be a mecca.”

More off-street parking and less onstreet speeding will benefit not only her business but dozens of others, she says.

“Right now, you’re driving fast past all these establishments that have been here for so long,” she says. “Sometimes, people come in and say, ‘Oh, my god, we didn’t even notice you were back there.’”

She is looking forward to the project even though it might be a little disruptive.

“What I did as a business owner is send out mass emails to our clients apologizing for delays, but that this is exciting,” she says.

“We can’t wait. It’s about time.”

hen a husband and wife work together professionally, it can be both satisfying and challenging. For interior designer Eloise Kubli and her husband, Arthur, a general contractor, the roles are clearly defined. “When it’s a design project, Eloise is the conductor,” Arthur says. “She is in charge. She tells us what to do, and my team and I do it.”

Kubli, who—with her husband—owns Collective Construction and Design in Plantation, demonstrated her talent for orchestrating a project when the two worked together on a three-story Sailfish Point oceanfront mansion in Stuart. The complete renovation involved smart-home wiring, impact-resistant windows and doors, and a new, high-profile barrel tile roof and copper flashing as well as reconfiguring interior layouts to open living spaces and emphasize views. She kept the beige shell stone flooring in the main living areas and some of the molding. “The home was very traditional and architecturally chopped up,” Kubli says. “But they wanted a combination of contemporary and traditional elements.”

The homeowners, a businessman in the mortgage industry and his wife, are avid boaters and love the beach. They also enjoy golfing, so the oceanfront property in a community with a Jack Nicklaus course was a perfect fit. With four kids in college and friends who visit, the couple’s 10,000-square-foot home with three bedrooms and five baths, plus a separate guest house, has become a gathering spot.

LIVING ROOM A bold graphic painting adds a splash of color to the living room’s muted color palette. Gray panels with white embroidery frame the windows, and a gray and blue wool area rug is soft underfoot. A baby grand piano near one of the glass doors creates a focal point, and a tête-à-tête takes the place of a typical sofa. “The living room is long and narrow, so I felt it was important to have a sofa that’s open

from both back and front to create a more approachable look,” Kubli says. Seats of two side chairs with gracefully curved maple frames are upholstered in tufted gray cotton with silver striations, while ice blue chenille on two wing chairs adds texture. Smokey stone crowns a cocktail table with a brass and stainless base.

DINING ROOM In the dining room, walls gleam with blue LusterStone. “I used a different color to help define the dining room,” Kubli says. “I also wanted to give it more depth and shine.” A painting in the same style as the one in the living room, as well as similar embroidered window panels, create continuity. The maple table has pyramid corner detailing; suspended above is a chandelier of pillow-shaped fused glass, hand laid in a cobblestone effect. Curved chair backs upholstered in white leather contrast with dark lacquered legs.

KITCHEN A stunning backsplash and countertops of blue and green quartzite slabs recall colors of the sea in the kitchen, while pure white cabinets create a clean, fresh look. Illuminating the island are pendants made with horizontal layers of Murano glass. “They’re not perfectly shaped, so they have an organic look, and they work together with the chandelier in the dining room,” Kubli says.

FAMILY ROOM In the home’s former layout, the TV sat against the windows because it was the only location free from glare. To solve the problem of the screen interrupting the magnificent ocean view, motorized shades and furnishings were arranged in a more stylish configuration.

A wall unit with a gray metallic finish adjacent to the windows now holds the TV and also provides storage. The unit, which floats above the floor and is illuminated from underneath, complements the rift-cut oak and iron cocktail table and gray leather sofas. Two side chairs upholstered in blue and gray chenille also have rift-cut oak frames. Between the chairs is a brass-based table with a quartzite top. A platinum and gray shag rug with textured variations grounds the furnishings.

MASTER SUITE A 36-foot-high oculus with a circle of windows visible to the outside is a dramatic entry to the master suite. LED rope illumination around the perimeter of the existing woodpaneled ceiling adds further drama, and suspended from the center is a spiral-shaped chandelier finished with silver leaf and a cylinder of crystals sparkling within. “It’s very simple and contemporary but still dramatic,” Kubli says.

Changing the shape of a wall with awkward angles in the master bedroom simplified the floor plan and opened the stunning ocean views.

Shimmering white stacked quartzite clads a feature wall that houses a ribbon fireplace and a TV screen; the rest of the walls in the master suite are finished with white LusterStone.

The designer removed the coffered ceiling, creating detail instead with rectangles of wood molding that surround a

large circular crystal chandelier. A richly textured white, blue, and gray rug softens high-gloss walnut flooring.

The bed’s head and footboards, curved to replicate the shape of ocean waves, have gray maple frames with eggshell leather insets. A white linen duvet and shams with gray embroidery dress the bed. Swivel chairs upholstered in blue chenille with silver threads and a gold leaf table with a mirrored top and bottom form a seating area.

The master suite is complete with two separate baths. The husband prefers to have his clothes displayed openly, so Kubli designed a closet with no doors. A gray maple storage island is topped with dark gray Caesarstone; above it hangs a chandelier with a matte black finish and rough-cut crystals. In the wife’s bath, Kubli opened the views by replacing mullioned windows with sheets of clear glass. Floors in both areas are white marble; countertops are white Caesarstone.

PATIO The designer paneled the loggia’s plain cement ceiling, as well as a cement bar, with cypress, but kept the bar’s shell stone top. In front of the pool, she replaced glass blocks with clear glass; bar stool cushions match the color of the water.

“The owners love the changes,” Kubli says. “Their family and friends love them too, and that makes me happy.

We brought today’s styling to a home that makes you feel like part of the sea.”
