Discover Something Beautiful At Ocean Drive Jewelers

Ocean Drive Jewelers presents a distinct boulder opal pendant designed and hand-crafted by master jeweler Taso. Every opal is “one of a kind” due to the phenomenon called play-of-colors, a color change noted in the stone as it is rotated and tilted. Taso has been in the jewelry industry for over five decades, designing unique pieces for exclusive clientele from all over the world. He specializes in redesigning aged pieces into new works of art.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO BE IN VERO BEACH? ADD 232 SUNNY DAYS PER YEAR, PLUS TEMPERATURES PEAKING AT AN AVG 90º IN SUMMER AND BOTTOMING OUT AT AN AVG 52º IN WINTER, AND THE ANSWER IS ALL YEAR!

Yes, I admit it. I used to be the person who said I’d never live in Florida again, visions of high-rise development, congested roadways and wild spring break revelers dancing in my head. But that was before my husband and I discovered Vero Beach, with all the charm of a quiet small town, yet with the cultural sophistication of a big city.

Arriving from Chicago and accepting the position of publisher at Vero Beach Magazine (which has just surpassed its 20th year), I was plunged into the deep end of Vero Beach’s social, environmental and business communities. And a nicer group of people cannot be found.

Why? My guess is that part of

the reason lies in the lack of highrise development, limiting the cars on the road and the stress levels of residents.

Vero Beach is also an interconnected community with built-in accountability for rudeness. The people you honk at today will be seated next to you tomorrow at lunch ... and believe me, they will remember you.

Now, on to the fun — exploring Vero Beach and all it has to ofer! Please email me with any comments or suggestions for next year’s Ofcial Vero Beach Handbook: publisher@ verobeachmagazine.com.

Wishing you all the best,

6 TIPS FOR VISITORS

WELCOME TO VERO BEACH! WE AT VERO BEACH MAGAZINE ARE SO HAPPY TO CALL THIS TOWN HOME THAT WE WANT TO HELP YOU ENJOY IT AS MUCH AS WE DO. LET’S BEGIN WITH A FEW SIMPLE TIPS.

1. BODY BASICS

You’re visiting the Sunshine State, so let’s begin with sun protection. Sunscreen should be a part of your daily routine. Use at least SPF 30 and don’t skimp in applying it; avoiding sun damage helps keep your skin young and lowers your risk of skin cancer. And don’t forget to accessorize with UVA/UVB sunglasses. Insect repellent will also come in handy, especially in the early evening, when the mosquitos are on the prowl. Finally, staying hydrated is very important, so it’s a good idea to keep a reusable water bottle with you.

2. DRESS UP/DRESS DOWN

For Florida residents and visitors alike, shorts, T-shirts and fip-fops can become a virtual uniform, especially in a coastal town such as Vero Beach. Do bear in mind, though, that restaurants, bars and private clubs may have specifc dress requirements, especially in the evening, and restrictions on cell phone use. Calling ahead can save a good bit of inconvenience and/or embarrassment.

WELCOME 6 Tips for Visitors

3. DRIVE KINDLY

Vero Beach receives visitors from all over the U.S., Canada, and even Europe, so remember that many drivers are still fnding their way around and bringing a variety of driving habits into the mix. So practice defensive driving, be patient and let people in. There’s nothing more awkward than pulling into the parking lot at the supermarket or church and encountering someone you just honked at (or worse). See page TK for some helpful navigating tips.

4. KNOW YOUR COLORS

Lifeguards post color-coded fags at Vero’s public beaches, indicating current swimming conditions, and are happy to explain their meanings. Learn what each colored fag means to ensure a safe, leisurely swim.

6. RELAX

Visiting Vero Beach gives you the chance to escape from the stress of everyday life. So enjoy each moment and all that our little slice of paradise has to ofer.

5. KNOW OUR CRITTERS

If you plan to engage in outdoor activities, such as hiking, paddling, swimming or boating, see page TK for some helpful tips about local wildlife.

RAINY DAY ADVICE

WITH OUR BALMY, SUBTROPICAL CLIMATE, EVEN RAINY DAYS ARE NOT GLOOMY. SOMETIMES WE EVEN ENJOY ONE OF OUR PATENTED FLORIDA “SUN SHOWERS”!

Vero Beach has an average of 232 sunny days per year, 27 more than the national average. In the summer, afternoon showers are common and are usually followed by clear skies at sunset. The Atlantic hurricane season ofcially runs from June 1 until the end of November, although damaging storms are rare in Vero Beach. Thankfully, hurricanes are well-tracked with modern technology, allowing for an early and worry-free evacuation when necessary. Indian River County’s Emergency Management Division’s “Disaster Preparedness Guide” is the best source for advice on local weatherrelated events and is available as a free download at www.irces.com.

6 THINGS TO DO ON A RAINY DAY

1. EMBARK ON A GALLERY CRAWL

2. VISIT THE BREVARD ZOO

This option may seem strange at frst, but think about it — many of the animal viewing areas are enclosed, and you can observe how diferent creatures feel about the rain. Spoiler alert: Sloths think it’s cool.

GETTING HERE BY CAR

From north or south, Vero Beach is accessed easily via I-95. Take exit 147 (State Road 60) eastbound. In just a few miles, you will find yourself in the heart of Vero Beach. U.S. 1 runs north-to-south through town, but is generally used for local driving. State Road 60 runs west to Tampa, intersecting with the Florida Turnpike and I-75 in between.

Vero Beach Regional Airport (VRB) offers nonstop commercial jet service by Elite Airways to select locations. Private and jet charter services are also an option, or you can call Able American Jets for concierge jet service.

Melbourne International Airport (MLB) is a small, easy-to-navigate commercial airport only 39 miles north of Vero Beach. Parking is accessible and affordable, and security staff professional and helpful. The drawback is that the selection of direct flights is limited.

Orlando International Airport (MCO), on the other hand, offers a veritable smorgasbord of flights with many domestic and international airlines. It is 109 miles northwest of Vero Beach, on Semoran Drive off the Beachline Expressway (County Road 528). Long- and short-term parking are available, as well as off-site parking locations with shuttle service. Shortcut tip: If you’re driving north on I-95, consider taking State Road 520 west, which links up with the Beachline closer to the airport.

Palm Beach International Airport (PBI) is 80 miles south of Vero Beach, off the I-95 Belvedere Road exit. Long- and short-term parking is available, as well as rental cars, shuttle buses, taxis and other ground transportation.

GOVERNMENT AND TAXES

Indian River County, part of the 19th Judicial District of Florida, has a ve-member board of commissioners and ve constitutional o cers: Tax Collector, Elections Supervisor, Property Appraiser, Sheri and Clerk of the Circuit Court. All are elected positions.

The City of Vero Beach is the county seat and operates under a council-manager form of government. The ve-member city council appoints the city manager, city attorney and city clerk. Council members are elected.

One of the many bonuses to living in Florida is that it has no state income, inheritance, or gift taxes, making the state particularly attractive to retirees. There is, however,

a statewide sales tax of six percent and an Indian River County sales tax of one percent that apply to most purchased products. Medications, medical services and most groceries are excluded. When it comes to real estate taxes, property owners are assessed ad valorem — based on the value of the property — and non-ad valorem by the county, city, school districts and special districts. Be sure to take advantage of the Homestead Exemption if you can.

Currently up to $50,000, the exemption is available to permanent resident homeowners living on the property as of January 1 of the tax year. Exemptions are also available for disabled veterans, widows and widowers, and people on disability. Visit www.

my orida.com for more state-level information.

EMERGENCY SERVICES AND LAW ENFORCEMENT

The Indian River County Emergency Services Department provides a variety of services including emergency management, re rescue and animal control.

The area within the city limits of Vero Beach is served by the Vero

Beach Police Department. Sebastian and Fellsmere also have city police departments. The Indian River County Sheri ’s O ce serves the entire county, especially the areas outside individual city limits. The town of Indian River Shores is served by the Indian River Shores Public Safety Department, all of whose o cers are triple-certi ed as police o cers, re ghters and paramedics.

THE SECRET TO FINDING YOUR WAY AROUND

Putting aside GPS for a moment, there are a few fundamentals that will help you zip around Vero Beach like a native. First, don’t mix up your streets and avenues. In Vero Beach, “streets” run east-to-west, with numbers

increasing as you head north, and “avenues” run north-to-south, with numbers increasing as you head west. So, often, even if you’re not familiar with an address, you may be able to find it based simply on the numbers. For example, 956 20th St. is on 20th Street between 9th Avenue and 10th Avenue. By the way, 20th Street is the local name for State Road 60. Roads named “court” run parallel to avenues, and those named “place” run parallel to streets. This information may make your brain hurt at first, but at least there’s a method to the madness. On the beachside, there’s also a pattern, and a more fun one at that — botanical names, arranged alphabetically! From Beachland Blvd. (Barber Bridge) south, the streets are named after flowers: Azalea Lane, Bougainvillea Lane, Camelia Lane, etc., down to Iris Lane. North of Beachland Blvd., you encounter tree names: Acacia Road, Banyan Road, Cypress Road, etc., up to Mango Road. So you can navigate while learning the local flora!

MOVING TO VERO BEACH?

3. SAFE & SOUND

Vero Beach is a very safe place, but we do get the occasional break-in. It’s always better to be safe than sorry. A good security system connects the alarm directly to local law enforcement. Ask your Realtor for a recommendation. Install the system before you move into your new home. Also, remember to change your door locks.

1. ZEROING IN ON A NEW HOUSE

Visualize your ideal lifestyle and make a list of priorities. Contact a local Realtor and ask for an overview of di erent neighborhoods and properties that meet your main criteria, for example, beach access, tennis courts, a manned gatehouse or proximity to schools.

2. A MOVING EXPERIENCE

Select a reputable, licensed and insured moving company. Many will also take care of most of your packing if you so desire. Create a plan for where you want to place your furniture and boxes before they arrive at your new home and label each box for its predetermined room. Planning will save you a headache in the end. If you have too much stu or just want to store seldom-used items such as holiday decorations o -site, there are many mini-storage facilities in Vero Beach; make sure yours is air-conditioned.

11. CLEAN SWEEP

If possible, hire professionals to keep your home immaculate so you can spend your valuable time enjoying life in Vero Beach. Make sure they are licensed and bonded. Your neighbors may have some recommendations.

13. GREEN IS GOOD

Vero Beach is home to many small companies offering lawn and sprinkler maintenance. Go for a larger company if you also need a landscape professional to manage trees, flowering vines and the rest of your garden.

12. MAKE A SPLASH

Many Vero Beach homes have pools and spas, so a maintenance company is necessary to ensure cleanliness and chemical balance. Saltwater chlorination is much better for your skin, so switch over if possible.

14. CREEPY CRITTERS

If you don’t want uninvited guests in your new home, be sure to arrange for a pest control service to apply regular treatments to the outside of your property.

INTELLECTUAL LIFE IS A MAINSTAY OF VERO BEACH. PRESERVING OUR HISTORICAL LEGACY IS IMPORTANT AS WE APPROACH 100 YEARS OF INDIAN RIVER COUNTY HAVING ITS OWN IDENTITY. LECTURES AND LITERATURE ARE PART OF THE LIFEBLOOD OF OUR COMMUNITY.

LECTURES

Vero Beach has long been the home of inquiring minds eager to explore new ideas. It’s no wonder that lecture series intended to inform and inspire have grown in both number and popularity. BOOK ’EM, VERO FOUR FLORIDA FAVORITES

“A Land Remembered” by Patrick D. Smith is the perennial No. 1 seller at the Vero Beach Book Center. It’s an epic tale following the MacIvey family from its pioneering days in the early 1860s to later prosperity. The novel paints a rich and authentic picture of early Florida life and was nominated for the 1984 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.

The main attraction in Stuart Woods’ “Orchid Beach” series is that it all takes place in the Vero Beach area, where Woods once owned a home. Here’s a line from “Blood Orchid,” the third book in the series: “Holly Barker walked into the Ocean Grill in Vero Beach and looked around for her father.” Woods’ bestselling thrillers are high on plot, less so on character development, with plenty of action that moves along at a brisk page-turning pace.

INDIAN RIVER CITRUS MUSEUM

For straight-out laughs — about one every two sentences — it’s tough to beat Dave Barry’s “Best. State. Ever.” Barry proudly points out what makes Florida great and, often thanks to people who came here from other states, what makes it odd.

Rody Johnson grew up in Vero Beach and has written several nonfction books about the area. “An Ice Age Mystery” recounts the surprising discovery of a 14,000-year-old “Vero Man” skull in 1916, the ensuing controversies and ongoing dig efforts. “The Rise and Fall of Dodgertown” is mostly about baseball, but there’s some “Zero Beach” history as well (a nickname used by early Navy airmen).

GOLFING

Golf is not just a hobby in Vero Beach, it is a way of life. Our warm climate means every day is a great day for hitting the course. Some of the most talented course designers have proven their expertise within our county’s exceptional courses, making many of them favorites of the United States Golf Association and the Florida Golf Association. Even more impressive, six of our courses are Audubon International certified due to their careful attention to environmental concerns. In this section, we have included an overview of our county’s numerous golf courses so you can be sure to play them all!

PRIVATE COURSES

BENT PINE GOLF CLUB

The Bent Pine Golf Club has been described by Links Magazine as one of “Golf’s best kept secrets.” The course blends a picturesque landscape with a championship course. Designed by Joe Lee, the course is located on 220 acres of prime hammock land, surrounded by Florida pines, citrus groves and ranch land with eight scenic lakes.

GRAND HARBOR GOLF & BEACH CLUB

Grand Harbor boasts two courses: the River Course and the Harbor Course. The River Course was designed by Joe Lee and challenges the most seasoned player. The classic Pete Dye-designed Harbor Course is typical of a links style of tiered greens, undulating fairways and deep pot bunkers. A blend of grasses in the roughs encourages the use of a variety of clubs and a variety of shots.

INDIAN RIVER CLUB

The Indian River Club is laid out in gently rolling terrain, close enough to the Atlantic Ocean to enjoy ocean breezes and still maintain the feel of a Florida woodlands nature preserve. The course was designed by Ron Garl, noted for his attention to the environment. In 1995, the Indian River Club was designated an Audubon Signature Sanctuary by Audubon International. It was the third club in the world to receive this coveted status.

JOHN’S ISLAND CLUB

North & South

The John’s Island Club has two championship, 18-hole golf courses on the beachside. The North Course, designed by Pete Dye, is laid out around old Florida oaks with great views that lead to the Indian River Lagoon. Jack Nicklaus and Pete Dye designed the South Course that demands premium

driving with its well-bunkered greens and water hazards.

West Course

The West Course is located on the mainland six miles from John’s Island Club on the barrier island and was the host to the 2015 USGA Mid-Amateur Championship. This 300acre course was designed by Tom Fazio and built on a natural sand ridge that

features stunning elevation changes. It has been ranked among the most challenging courses in the country. Because it is built in a secluded area without home sites, members can enjoy an array of wildlife as well as the course’s natural beauty.

HAWK’S NEST

Golf course architect

Jim Fazio was commissioned in 1983 to design an 18-hole, par-72 course that would t the “natural look” of the land with tall pine and oak trees abundant on the property. Because of this, Hawk’s Nest is one of the few “green courses” left in Florida. Long-needled pines, live oaks and nature line the fairways. This,

combined with the sand ridge that it was built on which forms the boundaries of the fairways, make this a golfer’s dream challenge. Hawk’s Nest, a Moorings Yacht & Country Club course, enjoys a reputation as one of the area’s nest courses.

Rising from an old citrus grove, the course at Pointe West was developed in 1999. Striking bunker complexes were created to highlight subtle mounding, and some unique features were incorporated for several “risk/reward” situations. Built in 1919, Riomar Country Club is located in the heart of the central beach area, and is the oldest golf course in Vero Beach. It has seven holes that run along the Atlantic Ocean, more than any other course in Florida. Although it underwent a massive renovation by Tom Fazio II and Nick Price in 2015, Riomar Country Club remains an “Old Florida” style course — generally at terrain covered in Bermuda grass, accentuated by tropical ora, water hazards and plenty of sand.

The Vero Beach Country Club course was originally laid out in the 1920s. Since the late 1990s, the layout and quality of the course have been enhanced. Fairway and green contouring has increased shot variety. OSLO RIVERFRONT CONSERVATION AREA

When you discover the Oslo Riverfront Conservation Area (ORCA), you will be surprised because you are less than a mile from a shopping center and smack in the middle of a wilderness. ORCA has trails and boardwalks that meander through 298 acres of mature coastal hammock, scrubby atwoods and wetlands. Some of the live oaks that dominate the hammock are hundreds of years old. Native plants include wild co ee, myrsine, marlberry, rebush, native wild owers, saw palmetto,

cabbage palms and a wide array of other species.

The Hammock Loop trail is full of birds and wildlife while the Scrubby Pine Flatwoods trail is at a higher elevation and contains bromeliads, large sand pines, saw palmettos and native wild owers. The “Awesome Pine” is located in this area and has been documented as the largest slash pine in the world!

The Coastal Wetlands trail leads to a large wildlife observation tower over a pond, an observation platform and a canoe dock that connects to the Indian River Lagoon. Just

to the south of the main ORCA is the South Oslo Riverfront Conservation Area or “SORCA,” a scrubby atwoods community with native songbirds, woodpeckers, squirrels and other wildlife.

Whether you like splashing in the surf or deep sea diving, Vero Beach has something for everyone.

SNORKEL AND SCUBA

Vero Beach is a great place to snorkel and scuba dive, especially in the summer when there is less wave action. While we do not have the type of coral reefs found in the southern tropics, we do have reefs made of limestone and coquina rock. Seaweeds and soft corals live on these rocks and provide habitat for a diverse range of sea life.

In addition, we have four arti cial reefs along the beaches of Indian River County, about 200 to 300 feet o shore. The rst is located along the south beach of Vero Beach at a depth of 38 feet. The remaining three were placed in 1999 and are located at depths of 66, 71 and 73 feet along the beach front of Vero Beach.

Not only do we have

reefs, we also have the wreck of the Breconshire within easy swimming distance of the shore.

And don’t forget to look for the silver plate and gold coins that lie close to the beach, the result of the wreck of the Spanish treasure eet in 1715.

remains memorable is that 13 years ago Sur ng magazine named Sebastian one of the “15 Waves that Fuel Sur ng’s Future.”

Locals also frequent Wabasso Beach and Spanish House. Take lessons or rent a board from Deep Six Dive and head out on your own or with your family.

SURFING

While sur ng may not be your thing, it is for many residents and visitors. When the “surf’s up,” boards and their owners are ready to ride the waves. Those in the know head for Sebastian Inlet next to the north jetty where a signi cant surf break creates waves that delight surfers of all ages. Over the years, local and national sur ng competitions have been held at the inlet. What

SWIMMING

If you love to swim, Vero Beach is the place to be. Not only is the ocean a favorite “swimming hole,” but we also have public pools at the North County Aquatic Center, Gi ord Aquatic Center and Leisure Square. Modest fees apply. The beaches are free, except at Sebastian Inlet State Park.

WILD THINGS

YES, WE HAVE ALLIGATORS, SNAKES, BEARS AND PANTHERS; BUT DID YOU KNOW THAT DOGS AND COWS KILL FAR MORE PEOPLE EACH YEAR THAN ALL OF THESE WILD CRITTERS COMBINED? MOST WILD ANIMALS DON’T WANT TO INTERACT WITH YOU ANY MORE THAN YOU WANT TO TANGLE WITH THEM. HERE IS A LIST OF THE FIVE SCARIEST THAT MAY HELP YOU TO BE BETTER INFORMED ABOUT OUR LOCAL WILDLIFE.

1. FLORIDA PANTHERS

We’ll start with an easy one. Not only are Florida panthers fairly shy, they are critically endangered. In fact, there has never been a recorded case of a Florida panther attacking a human.

2. BEARS

Florida is home to black bears, which won’t exactly be strutting down Ocean Drive. But if you are a hiker or camper, you’ll want to “bear” them in mind. Campsites will often have “bear boxes,” in which you can store any scented items, such as food and toiletries (deodorant, toothpaste, etc.). Otherwise, keep such items in your car, but never in your tent. By the way, did you know that the diet of black bears is mostly vegetarian, with small animals making up only a small percentage? In other words, they don’t want to eat us. Black Bear attacks are extremely rare. Don’t tempt them and don’t antagonize them, and you should be ne.

3. SHARKS

Let’s face it: When we enter the ocean, we are stepping into someone else’s habitat. And while that’s no reason to refrain from frolicking in the waves, it is wise to do so in the guarded stretches of beach, which are clearly marked. The U.S. sees about 30–40 shark attacks per year, and on average only one is deadly. Stay aware of your surroundings, don’t stray too far from the other swimmers, and always look to our experienced lifeguards for advice and assistance.

2 019 OFFICIAL VERO BEACH HANDBOOK 107

4. ALLIGATORS

Alligators are plentiful in the Sunshine State, but living side-by-side with these scaly neighbors is not nearly as terrifying as you may think. Unprovoked gator attacks on humans are exceedingly rare. Nevertheless, alligators need to be taken seriously. As with most wildlife, if you leave them alone, they will leave you alone. Use good gator sense: Don’t swim in lakes or other bodies of water where gators have been seen or are likely to hang out. Don’t let small children or pets wander at the edges of lakes, especially during the hours from dusk to dawn. While gators prefer fresh water, it is possible, though much less likely, to see them in the brackish waters of the Indian River Lagoon. If you want to observe alligators in their natural habitat, Blue Cypress Lake is a good place to do so. If you are canoeing or kayaking and see the trademark triangle of an alligator’s eyes and snout peeking above the waterline, watch carefully, and you will probably see it duck under and resurface farther away from you. If you are walking and encounter a gator sunning itself at the water’s edge, keep your distance, and it will most likely slip into the water, where it feels most at home. And this probably goes without saying: It is illegal to feed or molest alligators in any way.

5. SNAKES

This may not be what you want to hear, but snakes are actually a valuable part of our ecosystem. The part you DO want to hear is that, while Florida is home to 46 species of snakes, only 6 of those are venomous, and of those only 4 live in the southern part of the state. The even better news is that most Floridians go their entire lives without spotting a single specimen of most of these species or a single venomous snake at all. And, like most wildlife, snakes will usually ee if given the chance. According to the University of Florida, the chances of dying from a venomous snakebite in the U.S. is nearly zero, due to the ready availability of good medical care. Only one in 50 million people will die from a snakebite. You stand a better chance of winning the Florida lottery!

SHOP LIKE A NATIVE

ONE-OF-A-KIND BOUTIQUES, SALONS AND GALLERIES ARE PLENTIFUL IN OUR TROPICAL TOWN.

Vero Beach excites fashionistas and masters of gifting with unique, handmade and sophisticated items from around the world. Enjoy an afternoon strolling down palmtree-lined sidewalks, perusing through our colorful storefronts and truly indulging at one of Ocean Drive’s three ice cream parlours.

Say good-bye to the humdrum of shopping malls, and revel in a stressfree shopping day along the shore. The following list is an overview of the Vero Beach shopping scene— there are many more places to discover than we could possibly include here. One thing is certain, though: if you are looking for something special, you will fnd it in Vero Beach.

SHOPPING DISTRICTS: BEACHSIDE

PELICAN PLAZA AND THE VILLAGE SHOPS

Pelican Plaza is home to jewelry, gift and clothing shops, as well as a popular dry cleaner and barber shop. A gallery and yoga studio are also found here, including professional services to help with everything from skin care to computer problems.

The adjoining Village Beach Market is a gourmet market with an array of delectable treats and wines for every occasion.

A visit to the Village Shops, northeast n Hwy A1A, is like strolling in a small town, with an elegant collection of clothing and shoe boutiques, a

fne art gallery, interior design services and accessories, an Italian market, a stationery store, spa services and a restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating.

OCEANSIDE DOWNTOWN

Ocean Drive, Cardinal Drive and the eastern end of Beachland Boulevard

This is a great setting for a day of leisurely strolling, shopping and dining next to the Atlantic Ocean. Shady sidewalks with benches invite visitors to meander through this district. The boutiques in this area are known for their one-of-a-kind and unusual products, alongside top international brands of apparel, jewelry and home goods. Hotels, restaurants, spas and professional services

can also be found here, as well as a local post ofce. Public beaches run parallel to this shopping district, and Humiston Park with its playground and picnic tables is perfect for families. Parking is available in two public parking lots and on the street. A Saturday morning farmers market on Ocean Drive has local produce, baked goods, handmade soaps and other unique gifts.

SHOPPING DISTRICTS: VERO BEACH MAINLAND

HISTORIC DOWNTOWN VERO BEACH

Once the center of our community during the early 20th century, a

2019 OFFICIAL VERO BEACH HANDBOOK 124 WHERE TO... Shop Like A Native

noticeable rebirth of Vero Beach’s historic downtown has taken place over many years, bringing fne art galleries, original boutiques and restaurants galore. As another creative hub, galleries and businesses host the First Friday Gallery Stroll from 5 to 8 p.m. on the frst Friday of every month along 14th Avenue.

MIRACLE MILE

The area referred to as Miracle Mile is a series of adjoining shopping centers with two major supermarkets, restaurants, an independent book store and consignment shops, as well as specialty stores for pet owners and sports enthusiasts. Miracle Mile is where everyone ends up for the necessities. Ocean Drive’s The Beach Shop and Kemp’s Shoe Salon and Boutique have outlet boutiques in this district.

ROUTE 60 WEST

The Indian River Mall and the Vero Beach Outlets are both located at the western end of Route 60 in Vero Beach, as well as Home Depot, Lowe’s, Target, and many other national chain stores and restaurants.

ROYAL PALM POINTE

Originally the site of the Barber Bridge’s west terminus, Royal Palm Pointe is now a peninsula of shops, restaurants and residences culminating in a public riverfront park with a children’s play fountain. Marine, medical and professional services are also found here, surrounded by beautiful views of the Indian River Lagoon. It’s another great place for walking, shopping and dining!

U.S. HWY 1

If you have spent any length of time on the east coast, you are familiar with U.S. 1 (sometimes referred to as the Post Road). Typically a hub for less-than-exciting fast food chains and gas stations, our stretch of this highway may surprise you. Independent boutiques, garden centers and local designers’ warehouse shops are thriving here, too!
