I find it interesting that two of these reasons represent something that can be measured, but the third reason for giving is something that cannot be measured or counted at all. It is felt. A matter of the heart. The inspiring stories in this year’s guide are filled with many reasons to give. In the Hebrew language, the closest word to philanthropy is tzedakah. In our home, my family places loose change in a tzedakah box that sits on a shelf in our mud room. It is next to the bowl that holds car keys, on top of a cabinet that holds beach towels, sunscreen, swim goggles, and the occasional bar of surf wax. Our youngest son, Grant, has taken the initiative to count the money in the tzedakah once or twice a year to donate to the Healthy Start Coalition. Grant has no idea about the problem of infant mortality, and the semiannual haul from the tzedakah is prob ably closer to $250 than $2,500. He doesn’t care. What matters to him is that the act of giving makes him feel good. Seeing his kindness and generosity makes me feel good, too.
Certain problems, such as infant mortality and the social determinants of health that contribute to this problem, can be defined by numbers. Last year in Indian River County, more than 100 babies were born to mothers in poverty and another 500 to mothers with low household income levels. Other related statistics can also be counted for mothers who lack access to pre natal care, who engage in risky behaviors, or who are teenagers.

Using this Guide to Better Giving, donors can find organi zations such as the Indian River Healthy Start Coalition, whose mission is to establish and sup port a local system of care that optimizes the health of moms, babies, and their families. “I give because I believe my gift can make a difference.”
Over time, charitable donations have supported Indian River Healthy Start Coalition’s efforts to deliver critical pre- and postnatal services that have contributed to a reduction in Indian River County’s infant mortality rate by more than 50 percent over the last decade. With a gift of approximately $2,500, a donor can ensure that a mother and her baby can receive the services and support they need to have a healthy pregnancy, a successful delivery, and a healthy start to life. A meaningful difference, for certain.“Igive because I feel satisfac tion, enjoyment, or fulfillment when I give.”

According to the most recent study by the Lily Family School of Philanthropy at Indiana University, wealthy donors say they give for three reasons.“Igive because I believe in the mission of the organization.”
You will read about a Vero Beach family that has made philan thropy a family tradition and a local community that has come together to make a difference for the homeless children of Indian River County. You will also learn about the work that Ballet Vero Beach is doing, not only to enrich our community culturally but also to help elementary school children improve their reading comprehension skills. That’s not all; you will also read many success stories from various types of nonprofits. These stories will touch your heart and give you a glimpse at some of the good work being accomplished in Indian River County. And while you read them, know that you and many of our other readers have likely contributed in some way to these achievements by giving of your time and treasure to these worthy organizations. The biggest item of all in this guide is “The List” of all of our local nonprofit organizations. And we are blessed with many! They run the gamut of altruism from helping infants to caring for seniors; from satisfying opera lovers to teaching athletic skills; from providing health care to improving the Indian River Lagoon; from feeding residents in need to taking veterans fishing. “The List” offers information on these nonprofits’ missions, major fundraising events, and volunteer opportunities.Thankyouto the Indian River Community Foundation, Vero Beach area residents and businesses, and everyone who has contributed to the contents of this publication. It is truly an honor to shine a spotlight on the many organizations that are doing good work in our community.

Lifting Up Lives Windsor’s Homeless Children’s Foundation seeks to enlist the broader Indian River County community in its vital work by Julia Rogers
10 2023 TIME & TREASURE Darrell makes an exuberant leap into the pool at Vero Fitness during a summer program.
What followed were several years of intense research and consultation with multiple people in Indian River County who are knowledgeable about local childhood homelessness. Also, the necessary steps for establishing a 501(c)(3) nonprofit were completed. Thus, the Homeless Children’s Foundation came into existence in 2014, with a board of directors composed of men and women from the Windsor community.
– CARLA MEYER
“We initially helped 40 children; now we have about 375 enrolled in various summer and year-round programs. Riding, sailing, and swimming are popular sports.”
Not long afterward, a good Windsor friend, Rob Stein, became aware of the dire situation and offered his support. Brainstorming together, the threesome created a formal mission statement for their project: “To fund and coordinate programs for homeless children to enable their healthy development and long-term success while guiding their families to self-sufficiency.”
leven years ago, on a quiet Sunday evening in Vero Beach, two prominent Windsor residents settled down to watch 60 Minutes, a favorite television program. It was a benign habit they had formed many years before. The topic that night was homeless children in TheFlorida.unexpected discovery of the number of homeless children in the peaceful, affluent county in which they lived, Indian River, shocked and dismayed them. The heretofore calm Sunday night was altered, and in some ways their lives would never be the same, as they wrestled with the reality of this distressing phenome non. They said to each other, “How could this be?” and “What can we do about it?”
“At that point,” says current HCF director Hannah Hite, “homeless chil dren were falling between the cracks, as they were not participating in programs with their peers. That often meant the kids did not have summer and after-school activities to allow their parents to work and potentially to come out of homelessness.”
E
112023 TIME & TREASURE
Stein, HCF’s vice president, adds, “Early on, the team narrowed its focus to providing a safe and stimulat ing environment for the kids during the summer months when their parents went off to work; that was a huge challenge, as was the challenge to identify the kids and place them in appropriate camps with proper transportation.” Most of the funding would come solely from the Windsor community, at least initially. Since the necessary programs were already in place in the county, Stein explains, HCF opted not to build its own facility. “We thought it more appropriate to be cooperating and partnering with other organizations

When HCF identifies a child in need, they complete the registration and subsidize the entire cost so parents can save their funds and eventually move into their own home. HCF knows what programs accept certain ages and are available. If programs are full, there is not a wait list as HCF seeks out new relationships. Currently, opportunities are endless for our local homeless children.”
Co-founder Carla Meyer discusses HCF’s expansion of services: “We initially helped 40 children; now we have about 375 enrolled in various summer and year-round programs.
Riding, sailing, and swimming are popular sports. We are so pleased to finally have a handle on transpor tation, which has been a need from the start. We now have access to a large van and a small school bus and provide approximately 100 campers with transportation; naturally this necessitates bus drivers and bus monitors.“Wehave two full-time caseworkers who place our children in appropriate programs and work closely with their parents; this might include finding an apartment, helping with auto repair, or advising them about people whose potential friendship might be detrimental. Our caseworkers are grounded in trauma theory and take a nonjudgmental approach. Because we do not accept governmental funding, we can continue to work with the families for as long as they need us.”
Through the years, the minds and souls of HCF participants have been captivated by the homeless children. Longtime board member Jack Rohrbach describes the reward ing nature of the work: “HCF has tremendous impact on kids and their families. That motivates me, and knowing my time and resources are well utilized and benefiting those that need and want help satisfies me. So often, support money is poorly spent, but not here at HCF. We

While most new organizations look forward to growth, Stein points out, HCF did not relish the idea because that might be indicative of an escalation in the prevalence of child hood homelessness. “Nonetheless,” he says, “we have grown, now engaging children from 6 months to 17 years, as opposed to formerly 6 to 12 years.”

Meyer shares her enthusiasm: “It is so gratifying to hear a kid say they now have a friend, perhaps the first one ever. With kids securely in a pro gram, their parents can work longer hours or seek employment, lessening the homeless time—an important goal. Our director confirms that under our support, 10 to 12 families move out of homelessness each year.”
The Windsor community has been a steadfast supporter of HCF, both financially and emotionally, since its inception, and for that, board mem bers are profoundly grateful. Now, the board is considering ways to expand beyond the confines of Windsor and seek additional funding in the larger Indian River County community—not just to provide greater resources for serving homeless children, but to give a broader group of residents the opportunity to participate in this vital work. ◆ Autumn, Lillian, and Jacob enjoy a game of dodge ball in the gym at Vero Fitness.

Addison’s newfound summer camp access seems to have her feeling on top of the world.

Glad to Give The Gibb family has made a tradition of paying it forward By Ann Taylor
W hen Indian River State College’s $28 60,000-square-footmillion, Eastman Advanced Workforce Training Complex opens early next year, the community will have generous individuals to thank for making it possible.Thefact that Bob Gibb is one of them should come as no surprise. For years the owner and president of John’s Island Real Estate has quietly and without fanfare contributed to causes that better the lives of others. This time it’s a family aff air, with his wife, Wheatie, and their daughter, Rennie, joining him on the college’s donorGivenlist.his lengthy philanthropic resume, Gibb is no stranger to requests for fi nancial support. So how does he determine which charitable causes to get involved with? His answer is simple: “John’s Island residents are my best barometer; I look to follow what they support, and it really runs the gamut from the [Vero Beach] Museum of Art to Riverside Theatre, Saint Edward’s, Habitat for Humanity, Boys & Girls Clubs, Camp Haven, and the most recent one, Indian River State College.“Igot a call from Bill Marine, who’s on the IRSC Foundation’s board, about the Eastman Complex and the vocational programs that are going to be offered. There’s a real need to have more skilled, certified individuals Wheatie, Rennie, and Bob Gibb enjoy one another’s company during a recent visit to Aspen, Colorado.
Rennie, who grew up in a family where reaching out to help others was second nature, is a perfect example.
IRSC’s 60,000-square-foot Eastman Advanced Workforce Training Complex will provide training in automotive and aviation technology, welding, HVAC, and other industrial specialties.

I know Bill gives a lot of time and effort to the college, and I wanted to support him, so Wheatie, Rennie, and I went there to tour the construction site and talk with college representatives. We were impressed with what we saw and heard.”
“My parents’ commitment to philanthropy set a precedent for me, teaching me that it’s important to support efforts you believe in. One of the reasons I was proud to return to Vero and work for John’s Island Real Estate is the amount they give back to our community,” says Rennie, who contributes her time and treasure to Riverside Theatre, the March of Dimes, Saint Edward’s School, and John’s Island Community Service League.
Gibb is proud of his daughter as he continues to enlarge his own circle of support, again guided by requests from those he knows. Such is the case with Camp Haven, a transitional residential program for homeless men. Gibb became involved because of Gordon Stewart, who chairs the nonprofit’s board of directors.
Ac cording to Julia Keenan, the IRSC Foundation’s director of development, “Bob and Wheatie un derstand that the Eastman Advanced Workforce Training Complex will positively impact the quality of life for every resident in our four-county area, and that their giving leaves a legacy for future generations. By including their daughter, Rennie, they have instilled a family mindset toward philanthropy.” And herein lies a tale of how gen erosity paid forward creates a ripple effect, enlarging the circle of support.
“I found it inspiring that Gordon, who’s a resident here at John’s Island, supports Camp Haven. He’s passion ate about the difference it makes in men’s lives,” says Gibb, who, after learning about the programs and success rate, became a believer and fellowJermeysupporter.Gable, Camp Haven’s assistant executive director, can’t say enough about what Stewart has done.

A perfect example is the Mental Health Association in Indian River County’s “Turtle Trax: Overcoming Hurdles with Turtles,” the successful 2005 fundraiser that immediately caught everyone’s attention and raised $500,000.Youcan’t miss the colorful 6-foot turtle sculptures—they’re all around town. Bearing such names as “Patches,” “Born in America,” and “Florida Flo,” they prompt smiles and make you remember MHA’s mantra, “It’s okay to get help.”
Turtle Trax was the local version of similar public art projects that had raised money for charitable causes The Gibbs served as platinum sponsors for Riverside Theatre’s 2022 Spring Gala.
“When Gordon came into the picture, he was sold on what we do and how we do it. One of the things he’s been able to do is reach out to friends. Bob Gibb wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for Gordon. It’s all about relationships.”
Relationships matter to Gibb, who grew up in Kansas City, graduated from the University of Kansas, and, as he says, followed a girl to New York City and began working at First National City Bank. The girl didn’t work out; the job did. So did the blind date he had with Wheatie. Thanks to well-meaning friends, the two met on a paddle court, started playing, then started dating. A year and a half later they were married, and Gibb’s career as an investment banker was taking off. Life in the Big Apple was good. In 1976, Gibb had an opportunity to visit John’s Island and instantly knew it was where he wanted to live one day. He never stopped thinking about the barrier island community, and 13 years later he, Wheatie, and 3-year-old Rennie became permanent residents.“Icame here without a promise of anything, but I wanted to support my family, so I went off in another direc tion and starting selling real estate. It’s not work if you enjoy what you do, and I did, and had some success.” That’s putting it mildly. Gibb quick ly became a top-producing broker, and John’s Island Real Estate owner Lollie Ecclestone took notice. When she decided to sell the firm in 1999, she asked Gibb if he was interested. He was. It was an opportunity he couldn’t refuse. In the years since, Gibb has generously contributed his expertise and experience by serving on a number of nonprofit boards and com mittees, yet it’s his financial support that inspires others.
Spectrum_GTBG23.indd 1 8/22/22 11:20 AM
So did members of the Treasure Coast chapter of the Association of Professional Fundraisers (now the Association of Professional Fundraisers, Indian River chapter), who a year later selected John’s Island Real Estate and Gibb as Outstanding Corporate Philanthropist. Gibb has also received the Cultural Council of Indian River County’s Carolyn K. Eggert Award, given to individuals who have made long-term contributions of both money and time to the wider cultural community. As board member Mary Schenkel said upon presenting the award, “You’d be hard-pressed to find a nonprofit orga nization that Bob has not supported or touched in some positive manner ... he throws himself wholeheartedly into everything he does for this community.”AndGibbcontinues to do so. In the ensuing years, he, John’s Island Real Estate, Wheatie, and now Rennie have supported numerous charitable causes they believe in. They don’t seek head lines, banners, or standing ovations; they are simply doing what they can to make our community a better place. It’s the Gibb family way. ◆
“I remember when members of the Mental Health Association board came to me early on with the idea, and I thought it was a fantastic concept,” says Gibb. “I really launched into it.”
“My parents’ commitment to philanthropy set a precedent for me, teaching me that it’s important to support efforts you believe in.”

“When I was getting ready to stop dancing and move to Vero Beach, I met with Linda Downey, then Riverside Theatre’s education director, and she asked me to run the dance program,” he explains. That was a natural fit, because Schnell had previously spent many summers in Vero Beach, where his parents had moved, choreographing the children’s summer musicals at the theater.
Further, he saw the step as a natural transition. “I had always choreographed throughout my career and really enjoyed being behind the scenes as much as in front. So, with that and also running the dance
“I thought I would teach, go to the beach, and relax.” However, after a few years, Schnell had to admit he missed working with professional dancers, and that sparked the idea for Ballet Vero Beach. “I knew it would take a tremendous amount of work to form a professional dance company, but I also knew if I were ever going to try it, it would be in Vero Beach. There was no other profes sional dance, and we have such an outstanding culture of philanthropy for the arts and social services.”

ou might call Adam Schnell, founder and artistic director of Ballet Vero Beach, a bit restless. As it turns out, that is a very good thing for residents of Indian RiverAfterCounty.adding a professional ballet company to the array of artistic gems we treasure in Vero Beach, he asked, “Okay, what’s next?” And the answer to that question resulted in a series of collaborations that have taken ballet beyond the stage to sites throughout the county and ultimately into the classroom, where the art form is helping elementary school students learn to read. Schnell had danced professionally for 10 years when he left the stage in 2009 to live full-time in Vero Beach.
Ballet Vero Beach dancers perform a scene from Adam Schnell’s Pastoral Symphony, part of the troupe’s permanent repertoire.
Engagement is also integral to Ballet Vero Beach’s mission; dancers perform in schools, Gifford Youth Achievement Center, and Hibiscus Children’s Village. Further engage ment focuses on the Student Matinee Series, which offers a free perfor mance to every first, third and fourth grader in the county. The company employs its own resident dancers and partners with Dimensions Dance Theatre of Miami for additional dancers as needed. Ballet Vero Beach has also expanded its support staff with the addition of a technical“Beyonddirector.ourregular series, we have made great strides in getting out of the theater and performing at different sites, such as the Vero Beach Museum of Art, Quail Valley River Club, and the ballroom at John’s Island, to bring our performances to a more intimate setting. This has really helped us to make a name for ourselves. Our artists are exceptional, and if you can see them up close, it provides a whole new experience and connection with the audience.”
Beach had established a meaningful presence within the community, Schnell felt restless to do more. “We had performed in the schools and offered free tickets to popu lations, but all that started to feel perfunctory. I wondered what else we could be doing to be more relevant to the community.”Theanswer came from The Learning Alliance Moonshot Moment, with its goal of ensuring 90 percent of students in Indian River County read at grade level by the end of third grade. Understanding how dance could help in this endeavor, Schnell and Ballet Vero Beach jumped on board.
“We learned how ballet could teach students vocabulary and reading comprehension and retention,” he says, adding, “Each child is going to learn differently. This is just one tool available to the teacher to unlock a mind and make a child excited about learning.” Thus, the Student Matinee Series is transforming into the Stage to Page program.

Debbi Arseneaux, who serves as The Learning Alliance’s director of Moonshot Academy, explains that the teaching method is rooted in neuroscience research demonstrating that kinesthetic learning takes place when students carry out physical activities, such as imitating a ballet or dance movement as part of a story. “The goal in reading is comprehension. What we are providing is a pathway to comprehension through dance and the story it tells. Dance is also a beautiful way to explore a rich vocabulary, and the children are learning while they are having fun.”

Ballet Vero Beach is in its third year working with county first graders, and this year it is expanding the work to include third graders. “What is so exciting,” Schnell says, “is as we build out the curriculum, we will see the same kids in subsequent years and be able to assess their progress.”
Arseneaux adds, “We are gifted with the quality of the ballet company that we have here. It’s incredibly important that students have access to world-class arts experiences. And these students in Indian River County have an additional layer of integration of the arts to their academic pursuits.”
– ADAM SCHNELL
Schnell hasn’t stopped there in Ballet Vero Beach performs at Windsor.
Schnell knows from experience the trials young dancers face to break into the profession. “There are so few slots available for dancers, and we recognize the struggles they have ahead of them. This is especially true since COVID hit and the jobs for dancers have dried up.”

Starting this academic year, Ballet Vero Beach is empowering young people who want to pursue ballet as a profession by providing fellowships at Indian River State College. “The Fellowship Initiative for Dancers is totally free. They will dance with us while getting their education, and they will help in our work with The Learning Alliance and the literacy curriculum.”

Looking back, Schnell reflects on how Ballet Vero Beach’s journey took an important turn when the company developed collaborations. “In the beginning I wanted to do it all on our own. But it is our partnerships, both with the other arts organizations and with social service agencies, that really make us. We are all interconnected and can work together for the betterment of all.” ◆

Well, Red took to painting like a duck to water! Place a canvas in front of him and a paintbrush in his mouth, and he creates his own brand of masterpieces that will earn some feed money for the ranch. Not only that, but Red’s painting gives him an outlet for his anger, so his attitude has improved significantly.

Red, a 19-year-old quarter horse, has been at FRR since 2016. He is a smart horse that is very sweet with humans, but he had some anger issues and difficulties getting along with other male horses. He became one of the first horses at FRR to start positive reinforcement training. Red’s eagerness to please and desire to be good at everything he tries have made him a good trainee. His keepers started working with him at liberty—no halter or lead lines. He did very well and was eager to keep on learning. A fundraising brainstorm session yielded a quirky idea: What if Red could be taught to paint? That could take a while, but it might just be worth a try.

The deck seemed stacked against Chloe even early in her life. At age 5, she found herself at the Hibiscus Children’s Shelter in Jensen Beach, frightened and uncertain whether she would ever see her family again. This precarious state continued for many years as Chloe lived in the shelter and several foster homes. Without a stable home life or family, she developed an angry demeanor and behavioral problems. At age 15, a defiant Chloe was placed at Hibiscus Village in Vero Beach. The staff welcomed her and worked patiently to offer her love and guidance, helping her realize her value and potential.
Gradually, Chloe changed her attitude and began to dream of a better future. She focused on succeeding in school and became involved in softball and other activities. She also worked with a therapist to learn how to deal with her anger and pain Chloeproductively.participated in the Hibiscus Career Pathways to Independence program and, at age 18, left the village equipped with solid life skills. Youth Guidance Mentoring Academy’s free pre-apprenticeship program was a godsend for Joseph, who, at age 22, had just become a father and was employed delivering food with DoorDash. As soon as he learned about the eight-month program, he enrolled.
Joseph attended his classes faithfully and learned many useful skills, such as driving a forklift, using various power tools, and wiring electrical outlets. The program also includes extensive safety training. Joseph completed the pre-apprenticeship with six professional Lesscertifications.thanamonth later, he was hired by Casano Electric in Vero Beach as an apprentice electrician. The company’s vice president reports that “Joseph is already ahead of where other apprentices started in the past.” But he doesn’t take all the credit for himself. “I would like to thank my instructor, Mr. Jimmie,” he says, “for helping me reach my goals and exceed my own expectations.” “I was a wreck in high school,” Joseph admits. “I didn’t think I was going to turn myself around.”

nursery;
Toni Robinson’s love for the outdoors dates back to her early years in Michigan. She relocated to Vero Beach in 1985, and it wasn’t long before she threw herself into local conservation efforts. First, she joined the small but fiercely dedicated band of folks engaged in saving what was left of the defunct McKee Jungle Gardens—18 acres that we enjoy today as McKee Botanical Garden. In 1990, that group became the Indian River Land Trust. Robinson was a founding member and, for more than 30 years, has remained a faithful supporter of the nonprofit that has acquired and preserved 1,200 acres of natural habitat and 12 miles of Indian River Lagoon shoreline. She has attended conferences and seminars, engaged in fundraising efforts, and lobbied lawmakers on behalf of local conservation Soefforts.outstanding is Robinson’s contribution to local conservation that, in 2010, the IRLT named her its first director emerita. Later that year, a public preserve was dedicated in her honor; today the Toni Robinson Waterfront Trail encompasses more than 50 acres. Robinson is often called the “Mother of the Land Trust.” Indian River Land Trust

“I usually load up on fresh vegetables for our family,” she says. “With the higher cost of everything, I feel like I’m helping out my family so Marketmuch.”Fresh on the Move makes regular stops in Indian River County’s low-income neighborhoods, providing residents with reliable access to nutritious, affordable foods. In addition to fresh produce, it offers meats, dairy, and pantry staples at low prices. “If it wasn’t for this,” Andrea says, “many people would not have fresh, amazing food.”

She thus became the first patient at CCIRH to benefit from this advanced radiation technology, which was acquired through the philanthropic support of local donors who contributed to the ScullyWelsh Cancer Center. Suitable for select patients with small, hormone-receptor-positive tumors, IORT uses a miniaturized linear accelerator to deliver a single 20-minute dose of radiation directly to the tumor site during surgery, immediately following the lumpectomy.

While working full time, Micheld enrolled at Indian River State College. One of her first classes was English Composition, which she found challenging as a non-native speaker. She worked hard to pass that class along with her difficult math Micheld’scourses.hard work under Ursula’s tutelage is paying off. At Literacy Services’ Fiftieth Anniversary Student Celebration earlier this year, Micheld was named Student of the Year for her dedication and achievements. She addressed more than 200 people in English, reading a story she’d written for the commemorative book Stories by the Sea

When A.J. was referred to United Against Poverty by one of its nonprofit partners, Dynamic Life, he was at a low point in his life. He was dealing with substance addiction, homelessness, and estrangement from his family, including his young son. He was desperate to change his life and ready to take the necessary steps to do so. He committed to UP’s Success Training Employment Program (STEP), a four-week course that prepares participants to enter the work force. In that period, UP staff saw A.J. grow in confidence, emotional intelligence, and understanding of the value he would bring to the workforce. A.J. graduated from STEP and immediately had the honor of ringing the ceremonial bell indicating that he had secured employment. He was hired as a production tech with Perricone Farms, a citrus company. He has reconnected with his son and the rest of his family and continues to work with his United Against Poverty success coach as he pursues his personal and professional goals.

DayAway offers social interaction and stimulating activities for those who are no longer safe staying home alone due to cognitive or physical challenges. Staffed by certified nurses whom Nalia calls “extended family for my mom,” DayAway indeed makes a life-changing difference.
“DayAway was a saving grace for my family; her coming here really helps because I work all day,” explains Nalia. “She feels independent. To see that spark in her again is a wonderful thing.”
