May’s In Motion

W

e’ve moved! On March 31st, we packed our bags—and our pencils and desks and

computers and mugs and a large collection of back issues and all the odd treasures pictured here—and headed west. You’ll find us across the street and a few miles down the road from our old office, in another yellow building, on the southeast corner of Route 60 and 34th Avenue. Artist Candyce Klooster Speck is also on the move. She travels around Vero Beach, paintbrush in hand, and shares her insights on painting the town. We’ll also try to keep up with some young polo players as they gallop into the future of the sport of kings. Then we’ll peek inside the beautiful home of a family who recently picked up sticks and moved to Vero Beach and, finally, hear the moving stories of a collection of mothers and daughters who share their secrets for staying close. Our monthly column writers are on the go as well. Patrick Merrell takes us for a ride in an Austin Mini Moke, Renaé Tesauro tells us how to take care of our bones so injuries don’t slow us down, and Amy Robinson offers insight on moving through the loss of a beloved pet. It’s been a whirlwind of a month. We’ve got our boxes unpacked, the June issue is well underway, and we’re springing into summer here. I have just one question for you: Does anyone know what that black plastic thing in the photo is? We’ve been driving ourselves crazy trying to figure it out. Have a great month!

Life Starts with a Mother

I

speak from experience when I say mothers come in all different types. I was fortunate enough to have more than one mother figure in my life and also be blessed with a step-daughter of my own. As I ponder the approach

of Mother’s Day, a question comes to mind: What is the meaning of ‘mother’? A mother wears many different hats. She is a teacher, a maid, a cook, a chauffeur, an entertainer, a cheerleader, and definitely an ATM. But most of all, a mother serves as the biggest influence in a child’s life. Dedicating her life to nurturing, a mother also stands ready to act as guardian and disciplinarian. She is someone to guide you, laugh with you, fight for you, cry with you, celebrate with you, forgive you, hug you, and, most of all, love you unconditionally. A mother demonstrates the highest level of loyalty through the good and the bad. She isn’t afraid to tell you right from wrong, rarely hesitating to say ‘no’ when necessary. Basically, a mom can be both the most generous and the most intimidating person in your life—and sometimes all in one day’s time! Perhaps in different ways, ‘mother’ means something special to all of us. No matter the variety, a mother is one of life’s true gifts. To all the mothers of Vero Beach, cheers to you! I hope you enjoy reading our Mother’s Day issue. If you need any ideas for your mother, I would recommend heading over to the Healthy Start Coalition’s Mother’s Day Garden of Love outside Riverside Children’s Theatre for a great photo opportunity (May 5–10) and dedicate a flower to your mom (See page 34 for details). And if you need any gift ideas, be sure to check out our Mother’s Day Gift Guide. Happy reading!

ero Beach Magazine is the first magazine to be dedicated exclusively to Vero Beach and remains the only local magazine with verified circulation. A minimum of 10,000 magazines are distributed monthly, to at least 30,000 readers in almost every state, including Alaska and Hawaii. Vero Beach Magazine’s staff is committed to using print media to make Indian River County a better place for all residents, mindful of environmental and historic preservation, while underscoring the best aspects of life in this charming oceanfront community. Winner of numerous awards since its inception, starting with the Florida Magazine Association’s Best New Magazine Award in 1998, Vero Beach Magazine has made its greatest impact by providing meaningful information to readers about the needs of local nonprofit organizations in Indian River County, inspiring philanthropy and prompting nonprofit coverage by many other media companies. In November 2021, Vero Beach Magazine was acquired by Palm Beach Media Group, publisher of internationally renowned Florida Design as well as six monthly flagship titles, including Palm Beach Illustrated and Naples Illustrated. A proven leader in publishing excellence, PBMG looks forward to building on Vero Beach Magazine’s successful history. Our office is located at 3375 20th Street, Suite 100, on the corner of 34th Avenue and State Road 60, in Vero Beach. Visitors are welcome by appointment from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, for subscription, article and advertising questions. `

Toole is currently the director of Communities Connected for Kids, a child welfare provider. For over 20 years, she has worked to support hundreds of local children and families. In addition to serving on the United Way board, she also serves on Indian River County’s Children’s Services Advisory Committee and the CSAC Grant Subcommittee. Toole is a proud tri-citizen: Trinidadian, Bahamian, and American. The Vero Beach High School graduate has a degree in sociology from the University of Florida and a master’s degree in psychology and counseling from the University of West Alabama.

Three sailors from the Youth Sailing Foundation of Indian River County, along with their sailing director, Mary Morgan, and the Club-420 dinghy Sapphire, traveled recently to Tampa for the South Atlantic Interscholastic Sailing Association’s South Points No. 6 regatta, competing in the JV Division. Despite the fact that most of their adversaries were seasoned high school sailors, eighth graders Michael Ladd, Edee Steinkamp, and Nick Crull brought home firstplace honors. The regatta consisted of 12 races and 28 sailors in seven boats. Seventeen Florida high schools were represented.

The Vero Beach City Council’s chambers were packed as Vice Mayor Rey Neville read a proclamation recognizing the fiftieth anniversary of Literacy Services of Indian River County. A week later, Commissioner Susan Adams read a similar proclamation on behalf of the Board of County Commissioners, acknowledging the half-century-old nonprofit organization, for which Indian River County provides office space at the Main and North County libraries. Literacy Services offers tutoring for adults who wish to improve their English proficiency or literacy skills.

ver the span of my 30-year career in philanthropy, I have consoled and counseled my fair share of parents who have tried to make sense of the loss of a child, surely every parent’s worst nightmare. Many seek to honor their son’s or daughter’s memory by doing something to make life better for others. Some plant trees, while others name a park bench or other public structure in their

child’s honor. A few have established memorial scholarships. Others just drift, waiting for the right opportunity to present itself. It is heartbreaking work, yet an unexpected, sacred privilege that is part of the helping profession. Research suggests that adolescents with serious conduct and substance use problems are five times more likely to die premature deaths than their peers. When a child’s death is

caused by risky behaviors, including the use of alcohol or drugs, society sometimes blames parents, and parents sometimes blame others, inhibiting meaningful understanding of the issue. In our community, progress is being made to reduce such adverse outcomes. Since 2000, the number of Indian River County high school students who report drinking alcohol in the past 30 days has declined by almost 50 percent. Similar

3/25/22 5:50 PM

Sustaining a robust safety net for behavioral health care will require substantial resources.

reductions are recorded for high schoolers regarding binge drinking. Unfortunately, despite these overall improvements, alcohol and drug use and accidental deaths due to these risky behaviors among our community’s children remain higher than Florida’s average. The Substance Awareness Center, led by executive director Carrie Maynard-Lester, is working to change that statistic. Together with her board and staff, Maynard-Lester has developed a coalition of youth, parents, educators, health care professionals, law enforcement officers, and business and civic leaders working to reduce the use of alcohol, marijuana, and other drugs by youth in our county. Other helpful community programs include school-based prevention education and recovery assistance along with outpatient and day treatment.

Indian River Community Foundation has awarded grants of more than $200,000 over the past several years to support this meaningful work. We see it as an investment in Women's Refuge_MAY22.indd hope, a bet on the potential of healthy young people, and a hedge against the cycle of shame and blame surrounding substance use that prevents children and families in our community from thriving. After accidents, the Centers for Disease Control lists suicide as the second-leading cause of death among 15-to-19year-olds. Unlike deaths related to substance use, when a child dies by suicide, parents almost always blame themselves. On the occasions when I have helped parents use philanthropy to memorialize these children, they are rarely consoled by the facts or the overwhelming evidence that these tragedies cannot be predicted.

Private philanthropy is already leading the way.

According to the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration, the rate of hospitalization for mood and depressive disorders, conditions often associated with childhood suicide, is more than twice as high in Indian River County as it is for the state overall. In 2019, more than 1,400 children under the age of 18 were in this group. One of the highest rates of reports of poor mental health is among

LGBTQ youth. In a recent survey conducted by The Trevor Project, 70 percent of this group reported their mental health as “poor,” and 42 percent were found to have seriously considered attempting suicide in the past year. One organization working to ensure our youth have access to lifesaving mental health programs and services is the Mental Health Collaborative,

led by executive director Brett Hall, a licensed clinical social worker with a master’s in business administration. Together with dozens of member organizations, including Community Foundation grantees Mental Health Association, Substance Awareness Center, and Tykes & Teens, Hall and his team work to identify and fill gaps in services to improve the mental health

of all community members, including children. In addition to supporting proven programs and operating the McCabe Connections Center, the Mental Health Collaborative also recently advocated for a public-private partnership involving the Indian River Hospital District, Indian River Community Foundation, and other local grantmaking foundations to fund an intensive outpatient program for adolescents at Cleveland Clinic’s Behavioral Health Center. This promising practice increases access to mental health care for children and youth and reduces unnecessary hospitalizations, increasing the likelihood that more of our community’s children will thrive. If there is a silver lining to any of the school-based tragedies from the last decade or the massive disruptions and loss related to the global pandemic, it is that more governments, institutions, businesses, and individuals are talking about the importance of children’s mental health and well-being. This conversation matters, because sustaining a robust safety net for

behavioral health care will require substantial resources. In the coming months, our county government will have an opportunity to significantly increase public dollars allocated to its Children’s Services Advisory Committee. Indian River Hospital District will have a similar opportunity to allocate some of its accumulated assets to fund programs for children’s behavioral health services. Private philanthropy is already leading the way. From the early investments made by The Robert F. and Eleonora W. McCabe Foundation to improve mental health services in our community, to the United Way’s advocacy on behalf of chil-

dren’s services, to the recent growth in the number of permanent endowments at the Community Foundation benefiting similar efforts, a substantial down payment on a healthier future for our community’s children has been made by local donors. Perhaps this generosity is inspired by first-hand experience of what it is like to help a child. Perhaps it comes from knowing the despair that follows a child’s untimely death and a desire to prevent others from experiencing it. Whatever the motivation, this support of children’s behavioral health services is an inspiring and important investment in the future well-being of our entire community. ❀

emember when your parents implored you to “drink your milk”? You probably weren’t all that concerned about building strong bones and preventing osteoporosis until decades later, when you had your first bone density scan, or worse, a fracture. Perhaps now you’re paying closer attention to consuming foods and supplements containing calcium and vitamin D,

and with good reason. According to the Bone Health and Osteoporosis Foundation, approximately 54 million Americans have osteoporosis, a disorder of the bones that causes weakening of the bone structure and an increased risk of fracture. It is estimated that more than half of all women and a quarter of all men over the age of 50 break a bone during their lifetimes due to osteoporosis. Sadly, studies show that 20 to 30 percent of seniors

who break a hip die within a year, and many others experience a significant loss of function. “Osteoporosis means ‘porous bone,’” explains Dr. Seth Coren, an orthopedic surgeon and osteoporosis expert with Vero Orthopaedics. “Healthy bone tissue looks like a honeycomb under a microscope, with a network of spongelike trabecular bone providing support, much like the framework of a building. It is surrounded by an outer

Osteoporotic bones have much larger holes in the honeycomb-like structure.

layer of protective cortical bone. In osteoporotic bone, the holes in the honeycomb—or the spongelike trabecular bone—get larger until the supportive framework becomes increasingly thinner and breaks.” What causes this deterioration to occur? Many factors can increase the likelihood of developing osteoporosis, Coren points out, including diet, lifestyle, underlying diseases, medical procedures, and certain medications (particularly steroids). The primary trigger, however, is the hormone imbalance we experience as we age. Bone is living tissue that undergoes a constant

rebuilding process to maintain strength and firmness. This process relies on the proper balance between two types of cells: osteoclasts and osteoblasts. Osteoclasts break down bone by removing calcium and other minerals. They resorb older, damaged, or weakened bone to make way for healthy new bone built by osteoblasts. The hormones estrogen and testosterone inhibit osteoclast activity, protecting our bodies from bone loss by helping to maintain the balance between resorption and construction. During menopause, when women experience a 50 percent decrease in

VNA_MAY22.indd 1 Living Well_MAY22.indd 83

estrogen, that balance is upset, and osteoclast activity can outpace osteoblast activity. In other words, more bone is lost than built. Women lose approximately 20 percent of their bone density in the first five years of menopause. Similarly, as men age and their testosterone levels decrease, osteoclast activity increases and results in bone loss. By the time we reach our 70s and 80s, both women and men suffer from similar amounts of bone loss and an increasing likelihood of osteoporosis. The problem is, you might never know any of this is occurring. Unlike osteoarthritis, a disease of the joints that causes inflammation and pain,

osteoporosis doesn’t hurt. You can’t feel your bones weakening, but you might notice that you’re getting shorter or hunched forward. “These are signs that you have osteoporosis and may already have vertebral fractures,” Coren observes. “The loss of structural stability in your spine could cause you to not only lose height, but also up to 8 percent of pulmonary volume, and could ultimately decrease your life expectancy.” Experts like Coren agree that the only way to determine whether you have osteoporosis is to have a bone density test. Also called a DXA scan, the test uses a type of low-dose X-ray technology to

T-score, which compares the patient’s bone density to that of a healthy 30-yearold adult. The lower the T-score, the lower the bone density. A diagnosis of osteopenia is not necessarily a precursor to osteoporosis, says Coren, who takes many factors into account when diagnosing and treating bone conditions. “We look at the patient’s complete medical history, including their family history of fractures and illnesses,” he says. “In addition to a bone density test, neurological analysis, and blood work, we take an X-ray of the spine and do a FRAX assessment [a calculation tool developed by the University of Sheffield in the U.K.] to determine your risk of fracture. The goal is to maintain the current state of bone density and prevent further bone loss.” If medication is recommended, patients can decide with their doctors whether an oral or injectable form is best. “The choice of

medication is extremely important,” explains Coren. “Studies show that compliance is often a problem with oral osteoporosis medications, although both oral and injectable forms are covered under Medicare Part D. During COVID, we made sure that our patients maintained their osteoporosis medication regimen by offering drive-through injections.” “About a year ago,” he adds, “I started treating a woman who had between six and eight compression fractures of the spine with a monthly injectable medication. Her condition has been effectively stabilized, allowing her to maintain her quality of life.” The Bone Health and Osteoporosis Foundation recommends bone density tests for women aged 65 and older and postmenopausal women under 65 with fractures or risk factors. Men aged 70 and older and men under 70 with risk factors are advised to have a bone density test. Tests

BONE-BUILDER BASICS Avoid processed or canned foods, which contain excess salt, which contributes to bone loss. Consume no more than 2,300 mg of salt per day Engage in weight-bearing exercises such as walking, running, tennis, dancing, hiking, or elliptical training Perform muscle-strengthening exercises using your own body weight, weight machines, or free weights Eat a well-balanced, bone-healthy diet of fruits, vegetables, dairy products, and foods rich in calcium, magnesium, protein, potassium, and vitamins D, K, and C

Don’t smoke

Get 1,200 to 1,500 mg of calcium and 800 international units of vitamin D through a combination of diet and supplements each day

Cut the caffeine—more than 2 or 3 cups of coffee per day can interfere with calcium absorption and contribute to bone loss

often require a referral from a primary health care provider, although Coren sees patients without referrals from family physicians. “Optimum bone health begins in early childhood and should be maintained throughout our lives,” says Coren. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that toddlers get two to three servings of milk, yogurt, cheese, and milk products every day. Children from 1 to 2 years old should consume whole milk

products, while children over 2 should have low-fat or reduced-fat milk products in their diets. From ages 9 to 18, boys and girls are advised to consume 1,300 mg of calcium per day (4½ 8-ounce glasses of low-fat milk). Teenagers’ growing bones continue to absorb calcium, reaching peak bone density in the late 20s. “One of the major health issues facing young women today is energy deficiency syndrome,” Coren observes, “where

there is emphasis on staying thin and losing weight, especially among young athletes. Young people need to consume calcium-rich foods, and, if they are athletes, they especially need to maintain a healthy body weight while doing weight-bearing and muscle-strengthening exercises.” Our bodies—young and old—require healthy diets, rich in calcium and vitamin D (which helps absorb calcium) as well as weight-bearing exercise,

such as walking or running, to maintain optimal bone density. Add to that strength and balance exercises, which help build muscles and prevent falls. “It’s never too late to adopt a bone-healthy lifestyle,” says Coren. “Studies have shown that even nursing home residents doing exercises in their wheelchairs can reduce their risk of fractures. A body in motion stays in motion.” Our bodies, it seems, are much like our homes. The best ones have good bones. ❀

“Moke” is British slang for a donkey. In Australia and New Zealand, its meaning is a little less complimentary. It’s slang for a broken-down horse or nag.

any people have never seen a Mini Moke. Or at least they think they haven’t. Chances are, they’ve watched at least one movie or TV show with one of these jeep-like vehicles in it. In three James Bond films—The Spy Who Loved Me, You Only Live Twice, and Moonraker —Mini Mokes were the vehicle of choice for transporting workers and cargo around the villains’ secret lairs. Apparently, yellow was the only color available in the evil genius supply catalog, because every one of the cars is that color. In a fourth 007 film, Live and Let Die, James Bond himself drives a white Moke with a blue-and-white-striped canvas top from his hotel to the docks, accounting for about 10 seconds of screen time. All told, Mini Mokes

might rank second only to Aston Martins when totaling up the number of automotive cameos in the Bond films. On TV, viewers in the ’60s might have noticed Mokes in two British series: The Prisoner—they served as taxi cabs in the village where Number Six was held —and The Avengers, with Emma Peel at the wheel. Diana Rigg, who played Peel, also owned a Moke in real life, using it in Ibiza. Similarly, Brigitte Bardot famously ferried her many dogs around Saint-Tropez in one. The Mini Moke began life in 1959 as a project codenamed “Buckboard.” The idea was to make an even more spartan version of the British Motor Corporation’s groundbreaking Mini. Alec Issigonis, who had designed the Mini with the assistance of John

Sheppard, envisioned it as a military vehicle to compete with the Land Rover. Weighing in at a ridiculously low 895 pounds—a promotional video showed it being carried easily by four soldiers—the Buckboard was intended to be used for parachute drops. Unfortunately, the prototype didn’t have enough power, it lacked fourwheel drive, and the ground clearance was too low—only 6.5 inches. The British Army passed on it. On to plan B: In 1964, the Austin Mini Moke debuted as a simple and cheap civilian vehicle. The chassis was essentially a flat steel floor with box sections, or pontoons, on the sides. The driver-side pontoon housed a 6-gallon gas tank, and the one on the The minimal dash consists of a speedometer/odometer/fuel gauge dial, a toggle switch for the lights, a choke knob, and the keyed ignition switch. Coco mats have been installed on the floor.

The first Mokes used the same engine, suspension, and manual gearbox as the standard Mini. This 1967 model has a 998-cubic-centimeter engine.

other side held a battery and storage locker. The Moke’s 848-cubiccentimeter engine generated 34 horsepower and a top speed of 65 mph, numbers that would increase over the years. The exterior paint was initially offered in just one color: Spruce Green. Because the Mini Moke lacked many car-like features, including passenger seats, it was classified as a commercial vehicle, meaning no valueadded tax was collected. It sold well enough for four years, with 90 percent of the Mokes being exported to tropical countries for use as beach buggies, vacation rentals, taxicabs, and even police cars. However, when the U.K.’s tax and customs agents discovered that passenger seats, canvas tops, and other amenities were being added to the vehicles, the Mini Moke was reclassified as a car. The tax accompanying that designation raised the price by 20 percent, killing sales and leading to the end of British production in 1968. The cars continued to be made in Australia from 1966 to 1981 and in Portugal from 1980 to 1993. An additional 300 or so were assembled at a factory in Rhodesia in the late ’60s. In total, more than 50,000 Mini Mokes were built, successfully filling the niche for a fun, no-frills island runabout for nearly three decades. `

Classic Cars_MAY22.indd 95

An early U.S. sales brochure read: “Own a four-passenger donkey! The Austin Mini Moke is as tough and versatile as its namesake, but not half so obstinate.”

VERO BEACH MAGAZINE MAY 2022

In Australia and Tasmania, several dozen Mokes were converted for use as rail inspection vehicles. Spacers and flanges kept the Moke’s 10-inch tires positioned atop the 42-inch-gauge tracks.

Mac’s final days were filled with everything he loved, including long walks on the beach.

he beach was Mac’s happy place. Our gentle dog would trot along the water’s edge, ever watchful for the ghost crabs that popped up and then vanished into the sand, waving a claw at him if he tried to introduce himself. It did not matter to him whether the walk lasted 15 minutes or most of an afternoon; his time at the beach was never long enough. When

approaching the access to our street, he would slow down dramatically and then lean into the leash with purpose, pointing his nose to the east while the water deepened around his short legs, as if he fully intended to swim to Africa. After we finally coaxed Mac back to our house, he would drain a bowl of water and snore for several hours, twitching and blinking in his sleep. When we noticed that Mac had slowed down

considerably, and we listened to his diagnosis, we knew his short life would soon end, so we resolved to make his last week one for the books. We treated him to ice cream at Cravings, where he seemed confused that we wanted him to claim the dish, but quickly recovered his senses and dove in. Mac was lifted into a friend’s boat for a sunset cruise on the river, where we putt-putted into coves

to look for manatees. He reunited with two best dog friends and wrestled lightly with a bold young puppy. Mac had always slept on his bed in the family room adjacent to our bedroom, but now I put an additional dog bed next to me in the master bedroom. He gingerly stepped into it and heaved a great sigh as he fell asleep after another beach trip. The first night he slept there, I got up briefly, and when I came back to bed I heard a rhythmic thump, thump, thump as his tail invited a belly rub in the wee hours. It was fitting that on Mac’s last day we spent the morning at the beach. He had been discouraged previously from digging too much, but now, down at the waterline, he dug until his body was nearly vertical in the hole. As if to check for permission, he would look up at us with a lopsided grin. We told him, “Good boy, go dig,” and he went on with his work while incoming water erased it. Once Mac left us, it would have been easy to surrender to depression, but my husband and I had been through this before.

Rather than recalling Mac’s last days, we tried to go back in our minds to more lighthearted memories, like the time he rolled over while sleeping on our screened porch, popped out the bottom screen, and wrapped himself up like a burrito. We laughed about his penchant for stretching elaborately after standing up, performing an exaggerated downward dog yoga move, or baking himself in the sun like a lizard, even during the hottest months, to loosen up his arthritic hip. We remembered the first day after we adopted him, when he bolted out the garage door and ran full tilt down our street to the neighbor’s house, where we found him slurping up cat food on their front step, ignoring the affronted cat growling at him from the bushes. Mac was sorely missed and always on our minds. Just three nights after his death, I dreamed of him. I saw Mac galloping toward me and then jumping effortlessly onto a high table next to me. The clarity of this dream was startling; I distinctly felt his coarse fur and kissed

– Janine in Vero Beach Dogs are so adaptable that I have to believe Carly can ace this driving test. Start very gradually by just pulling out onto your driveway and getting in with her. Feed treats and listen to soft music, but don’t go anywhere. Work up to short drives around the neighborhood with lots of stops for treats. Don’t feed her before these trips, in case motion sickness is partially to blame for her dread of car rides. Next, go to Riverside Park, in particular the on-leash areas dogs can access near the art museum. In the car, consider a big crate or car harness to prevent pacing while the car is moving, which can feed into her agitation. It is important that Carly is able to see out the window and that it is open enough for her to catch the scent of a new experience. When road trip day finally arrives, she’ll watch you pack her prized possessions: a favorite toy, her dog bed, and bowls, clearly predicting an adventure. By then, she should be all in.

It may look as if Hunter is playing a losing game, but puppies get a lot of leeway from older dogs. Hunter may be reading the big dog’s reaction in subtle ways we don’t see. I note that you say neither dog wants to stop the show, so that may be your answer right there. The puppy is going through the repertoire of charming antics that worked so well with his mother and siblings, such as ducking his head below the older dog’s head, putting one shoulder on the ground and his rear in the air, and pawing lightly at the other dog. All are invitations to play that come with the disclaimer “I am not a threat. Anything I do that irritates you should be put down to typical puppy goofiness.” It is as if Hunter is apologizing in advance for being a puppy knucklehead. From your description, it seems the older dog is establishing ground rules and showing his superiority for now, but I wager that if you and Hunter walked alongside this man and his dog, the two would find common ground.

the top of his head, inhaling his uniquely sweet doggy scent. I awoke smiling, even as tears welled. No one can tell you how to mourn the loss of a beloved pet. There are, however, steps to take that can soften the grief. Get outside: Drive or stroll to your dog’s favorite park, walking trail, or outdoor café where you used to sneak bread to him under the table. Leaving the house will help clear the cobwebs of sadness and allow you to be happy for

the great life you gave your dog, as long as it lasted. Rewind: For some time after the dog is gone, your brain will take you to those final, painful days or hours. When that happens, just go back further in your mind, to a hike you took three years ago, the romps on the golf course after hours, or that first time to the groomer when she pranced out proudly with bows in her hair. Write it down: Recall some of your dog’s funny or touching moments and

record them. Putting pen to paper refreshes the happy memories. Talk these recollections over with people who knew and liked your dog; they may remember a detail you had forgotten, bringing those moments to life all over again. Name it: Every pet owner has fun nicknames for his or her best friend, often based on behavior and personality. Make a list of cute nicknames you called your dog. My husband and I did this for

our dog and got a kick out of saying “Macadoodle,” “Chop Chop,” and “Liebchen,” which means “little loved one” in German, out loud again. Print it: Scrolling through your cell phone to find that perfect photo to show someone is fine, but print some photos, too. Make your dog’s very own coffee table book with favorite pictures from throughout his life, starting when you first got him and chronicling some seminal events, like when

you tried to teach him how to swim and when he met your first grandchild. You may find that talking with others will bring up their stories of mourning a lost pet. This is not meant to lessen your experience but to show support. It may be irritating when people comment on how lucky you are that your dog lived to be quite old, since the grief is felt just as keenly whether a pet passes after 5 years or 15. Friends may encour-

age you to run right out and get another dog immediately, but only you can know when to invite another pet into your life. Sharing your love with another animal is not a betrayal of your best friend. A slower transition to a new pet might be desirable, such as providing foster care for a pet from a local shelter or volunteering your time at the shelter to cheer pets looking for their new best friends. Love grows when you share it with others. ❀

Living Color IN BOTH LIFE AND ART, CANDYCE KLOOSTER SPECK KEEPS ALL DOORS OPEN BY RENÁE TESAURO

andyce Klooster Speck lives by the mantra “Keep all doors open,” and it has served her well. Painting, traveling, and modeling around the world, she honed her artistic skills in an array of fields—from architectural renderings and fashion design to publishing and marketing. These influences can now be seen in her vibrant watercolors and acrylics on display in her hometown of Charlevoix, Michigan and in Vero Beach, where she spends her winters. A visit to Speck’s small studio along the Indian River Lagoon to learn more about the doors she’s opened reveals that her journey is as colorful as her paintings. “My fourth grade teacher recognized my art talent and encouraged me to enter a contest,” says Speck. “I drew a picture of a pirate—our local high school mascot— and I won! Later, my high school art teacher helped me create a portfolio of work, which earned me a scholarship to Kendall School of Design in Grand Rapids, Michigan. “Following graduation, I had an opportunity to work at Hallmark designing greeting cards, but I followed another open door and took a job doing architectural Candyce Klooster Speck’s small studio on the Indian River Lagoon is renderings for an architect in Traverse City.” That filled with light and color. experience led to work creating window displays and modeling on the side. Soon enough, she was walking the runway at New York’s Fashion Week, wearing Diane von Furstenburg’s signature wrap dresses and then-newcomer Betsey Johnson’s whimsical designs. More modeling jobs took Speck to Miami and Los Angeles, but by then she was more interested in the creative side of the fashion industry. She spent the next 10 years in San Diego, designing catalogs and organizing photo shoots and shows for a fashion designer who manufactured clothes in Bali. It was in San Diego that she met and married her husband, Phil, a teaching golf pro. The couple spent 13 years living in Costa Rica, where Candyce Speck opened the area’s first internet café and an art gallery, selling her paintings as well as items crafted by the indigenous Guaymi people. “I developed great relationships with the Guaymi,” she reflects. “I would ride to their village on horseback and come back with bags, dolls, and hats, which I sold for them. The area was a popular ecotourism destination, so occasionally celebrities like Kevin Bacon and Daryl Hannah would stop in to look at the merchandise.” Family ties eventually pulled the couple back to Michigan, but in 2017 they purchased a condo in warm-weather Vero Beach, where the artist had spent many summers as a teen. “I love the art vibe and camaraderie among artists here,” says Speck, who is immersing herself in the arts community through the Vero Beach Art Club, the Vero Beach Museum of Art, and Under the Oaks. “I am captivated by the dramatic clouds, stunning beaches, bountiful wildlife, and unrecognized beauty of Vero’s landmark buildings. I always carry my traveling watercolors, and I often stop the car to take a photo or make a sketch. Sometimes I spontaneously paint plein air. The opportunities are limitless.” `

Home on the Water, acrylic on canvas, 20 x 16 inches

I was crossing the Alma Lee Loy Bridge when I noticed some interesting homes with docks on the water. I snapped a few photos, went home, and started painting. Although I intended to focus on the architecture, I became increasingly captivated by the reflection in the infinity pool. Sometimes when I go in one direction it leads to something else. As I’ve said, ‘Keep all doors open—whether in life or painting!’

It was a quiet morning on the beach in Riomar. I marveled at the colors, cloud formations, the shadows in the sand, and the architecture in the background. I took a photo, got out my sketch pad, and added colors from my traveling palette to capture the moment. When I got back to my studio, I blended the hard lines of the architecture and the soft elements of the clouds and shadows into one cohesive beach scene with added depth on a larger canvas.

My first painting in Vero Beach! Whether you’re for or against keeping this iconic building, you can’t deny it has appeal. I went on a tour of the property one day and saw a trailer behind it that had the words ‘Vero Beach’ on it. Suddenly, it took on a whole new meaning for me. It wasn’t just a decommissioned power plant; it had a purpose. I went home and quickly painted it from this unique angle that is rarely seen by the public.

Now in private hands, this thumbnail watercolor sketch captures the grandeur and symmetry of this lovely building without the rigidness of its architectural detail. Sometimes when painting architecture you can get lost in the details. Watercolor allows me to be more spontaneous and fluid.

When I want to loosen up, I paint ‘en plein air,’ which is more freeing and not constrained by detail. At the beach one bright, blue, sunny day, I painted this study of an egret with a paraglider in the background. Although the paraglider flew away, the egret never moved as I captured the scene.

Hand On the Mallet THE NEXT GENERATION OF POLO PLAYERS ENSURES A BRIGHT FUTURE FOR THE SPORT BY AMY ROBINSON

A

ny sport needs a constant influx of talent. Veteran players are highly valued, but young people willing to commit to the work ethic required to excel are essential to the growth of all sports. Polo has been termed the sport of kings, but the up-and-coming players will determine its long-term future. Jem Handler is one such player. “Jem is very talented and a joy to teach,” says Max Secunda, director of polo at Windsor. “She is quite slight, so she may not be as strong as some other players, but she has a way of sitting on the horse that not many people have.” On February 19, the day of the Windsor Charity Polo Cup, she played in the junior demonstration match in front of an enthusiastic crowd of supporters, but she couldn’t stick around to see the high-goal match (the highest level of play, determined by the cumulative team handicap). Jem and teammate Finn Secunda, Max’s son, were hurrying to Wellington to play in an invitation-only tournament on the big International Polo Club field in front of close to 8,000 spectators. Jem and Finn are both 14 years of age. Melissa Handler, Jem’s mother, sees ancillary benefits to her daughter’s polo passion. “Jem is more confidant since starting this sport. I see focus and determination in her,” she says. “This was my daughter’s choice. This was not driven by me; Jem is a self-starter. She has given up some of her personal life to take this opportunity.”

There are many moving parts to polo: taking care of the horse, managing the equipment, relating to other players, playing as a team, listening to trainers, and communicating with grooms. For youngsters like Jem and Finn, this is the kind of life preparation that fosters maturity: prioritizing what is important, taking on challenges, having goals. “There is an element of discipline and physical fitness and being on top of things that comes with polo,” says Max. “I’ve taken lots of people out to ride and hit balls, but only a percentage will go on with it. The experience of participating in this motivates people to come back to it as adults once other obligations are met. It’s no coincidence that business leaders want to play polo. It challenges them.” On Windsor Charity Polo Cup day, Jem gained valuable experience that she plans to use to hone her skills. “The junior demonstration match at Windsor was easy to maintain, and the ball was always moving,” she says. The 40-goal match in Wellington later the same day, among some of the best junior players in the world, was a big step up. “That match was played at a very fast pace. I did not prepare for the level of intensity in this game. The opposing team had some of the best junior players in Argentina, so it was a struggle to keep up at their level.” While her team did not bring home a win, Jem knows it was an opportunity not to be missed. “It was really fun to play in both matches,” she says. At the pinnacle of young polo is the exceptional Hope Arellano. In 2017, at the age of 14, she became the youngest-ever winner of the Women’s U.S. Open. When she was 13, she won the 12-goal United States Polo Association’s Pete Bostwick Memorial tournament with her two brothers

and her father, Julio, who was the highest-rated American player for many years. “I have ridden horses my whole life, but I knew by age 9 that I wanted to be a professional polo player,” Hope says enthusiastically. “To have the kind of family support I enjoy is fantastic. My parents coach me all the time. You can ask for nothing more

than to have your family behind you.” Hope played at the Windsor Charity Cup this year, just one of many matches on her dance card. She plays almost exclusively with adults, but understands that young players will drive the growth of the sport. “Polo is so rewarding, and you can truly get better every day no matter your level,” she says. “This is what makes it so

You have to learn their traits inside out. The more you know your horse, the better you will be on the field.”

For Max, there isn’t one particular approach when teaching children, because they are all different. “Some are hyper-focused and can be pushed, while others are more fun, and we like that, too.” Going all in for polo can be an expensive endeavor, but young students can get started if they are committed. “With two horses, kids can

Youth Polo_MAY22.indd 118

Windsor provides a near-perfect setting for those wishing to try their hand at the sport. “It’s a privilege to be here,” says Max. “The horses are comfortable, we have a very good stick and ball field maintained to perfection and wooded trails where horses and riders can get back to nature.” Max would like his junior polo program to grow, but the primary goal is for students to have positive life experiences. “If the kids achieve

wonderful and lofty things in the game, that’s fantastic; but if they just have an enthusiasm for it and learn to love horses, that makes me very happy, too.” Max recently found a photo of Jem and Finn on horseback when they were about 10 years old. “They weren’t very skilled then, but that was a special time,” he recalls. “That picture reminded me that it is very important to just have fun with it.” ❀

Loving the Lifestyle THE PANDEMIC PROPELS A FAMILY TO RETURN FROM LONDON TO A COZY, COLORFUL WINDSOR HOME BY ANN TAYLOR PHOTOGRAPHY BY BRANTLEY PHOTOGRAPHY

M

ichelle loved living in London. So did her husband, Jan. The idea of leaving the bustling capital city with its rich history, museums, and entertainment venues never entered their minds. Their family was thriving, they had just renovated their home, and all was well with their world. Then came COVID-19 and everything changed. “After the pandemic hit, the lockdown conditions were strict. We were only able to leave our house once a day, which was very bizarre,” Michelle says. “With no end in sight, it just made sense for us to relocate to the vacation home we were already building in Florida.” Windsor had come into the picture a few years earlier when the couple decided to sell their Islamorada vacation house and build one in a community that could offer the family more opportunities to engage in a variety of activities. That’s when Michelle recalled reading a fashion pictorial in Vogue magazine featuring Windsor and model Dree Hemingway. Horses in the background brought back memories of her growing-up years in Kentucky. More importantly, she had met individuals connected with The Gallery at Windsor while attending Frieze London, a contemporary art fair held every October in Regent’s Park. For Michelle, an art history major who worked in product design and development in the fashion industry, it was a coming together of like minds. Through the years, both she and Jan had acquired a variety of appealing artworks. She planned to make sure these pieces found a special place in their new house, along with treasured furnishings. Thanks to Merrill, Pastor and Colgan Architects, the family’s two-story, five-bedroom home is everything they wanted. With a westward view overlooking the lap pool and golf links, sunsets are a cause for applause.

Michelle, who organized the entire move online and enrolled her daughter in Saint Edward’s School, began to thoughtfully curate their belongings to shine in new spaces. “We wanted an eclectic home that was cozy and homey, but also current, where everyone could gather during holidays,” she says, “and one that is playful enough for a preteen child—hence the pool table/dining table combo, outdoor Ping-Pong in the front courtyard, the lacrosse bounce back, and the breakfast/game table. I also wanted things to be old and new. I guess you could say ‘things that have some soul.’” So let’s take a tour and see how Michelle achieved all these objectives, starting on the main level, in what she describes as “one contiguous space for living, dining, and cooking.” Four graphics by Georg Baselitz hang on a wall near the kitchen. Purchased by Jan’s father in the 1960s, they are timeless treasures. In one corner, a banquette and a table with a gold palm tree base, along with a small straight-backed chair, form a perfect place to do homework, play games, or curl up with a book.

The same holds true across the room, where a sink-into leopard-print club chair is nestled next to a pencil reed side table. Arranged on top are books Michelle wants to read or share with her daughter. “My daughter will often have breakfast there, my husband has his coffee; it’s a perfect quiet space,” she says. Completing the vignette is an eye-catching mixedmedia piece with a bright yellow three-dimensional frame by American artist Borna Sammak, who, according to his artsy.net biography, uses “kitsch, glitch, and pop culture as source material.” “We had a great friend in London who was a collector of works created by emerging artists. I was at London Frieze with him, where I met an art dealer. We formed a relationship, which is how I found the artist.” A large, curved sofa on one side of the room invites togetherness, yet Michelle admits she’s not yet satisfied with the arrangement. “I’m working on making the sofa area cozier, as I really grew to love the snug idea while living in London.”

A curved sofa in the living area creates an inviting space for family to gather and relax.

Coziness is key throughout the house. So is charm, as evidenced in her daughter’s bedroom, where the timeless elegance of wallpaper commands center stage. “We were looking for wallpaper, and she chose this design with birds and flowers as her favorite. We wanted a room that felt very English, and her wish won out,” says Michelle, who had been looking for something a little more sophisticated but is nonetheless pleased with the results. “The wallpaper and curtains are the same, and the closet jib doors are wallpapered, creating a seamless look. The two chairs came from our house in Islamorada.” More wallpaper from Cole & Son, a traditional British firm, can be seen in the bunk room. Originally purchased for the London house but never used, it found a home in Windsor. “I think it works perfectly in this space,” a pleased Michelle muses. “The mirror is an antique my husband purchased at the Paris Flea Markets before he met me, the

wicker was a consignment shop find, and the chaise lounge was in our living room in London.” In another bedroom, a large model sailboat is perched on a high shelf in the corner. Like so many things, it, too, has a story. “My husband bought it a long time ago on a summer trip to the East Frisian Islands. It has traveled well with us.” Other items that spoke to Michelle can be found throughout the residence. A modern lighting fixture, consisting of a handblown glass pendant surrounded by a flexible hoop attached with tightly strung ribbons, adds motion and dimension to the second-floor landing. Nearby, a digitally altered image of the Pont du Gard in the South of France, by German artist Lukas Roth, is intended to capture a memory from a moment in time. One can’t easily forget the graphic print stating “Love Me or Leave Me Alone” in the entrance foyer. Michelle found it during a foray to Frieze London. “I was with an art dealer

who was talking to me about German artist Walter Dahn, and when I saw it, I laughed. It just captured me.” One of Michelle’s favorite places to spend time is on the swing in the lanai. Above a window, seven faux turtle shells, originally intended for a rental property, draw the eye up to the beamed ceiling. Michelle couldn’t be happier with the way things have turned out. “I feel free when I walk into my house due to the bright and airy space. The many windows and doors allow for the outside to feel as though it’s inside. “We weren’t really ready to move from London, but with no end of the pandemic in sight, it was the best thing for us to do, and we have no regrets. My daughter has settled in very well and has made good friends at school, and she has two really close friends here at Windsor. She also plays tennis and golf, and is starting to explore polo and school team sports,” Michelle notes happily. “Having amazing sports facilities right here in the community is a huge benefit and something we all enjoy. In London we would have had to drive an hour to ride horses. “I never thought I would want to live in Vero Beach full-time, but we are all loving the lifestyle.” `

Mother's Day_MAY22.indd 128

Dr. Divya Haryani’s relationship with her daughter is still in its early stages. The toddler stage, to be exact. As a practicing dermatologist with a three-year-old daughter and a newborn son, she is daily making time to craft the bonds that will keep her and Azuri close for a lifetime. Bedtime offers some of those bonding moments. “We always put her down to sleep, so it’s never someone else doing it,” she says. “That’s a really special time.” Their bedtime ritual includes reading a story in Azuri’s rocking chair, singing her “sleep song,” and turning off the lights together. “We try to shower her with love.” Frequent—often weekly—trips to LaPorte Farms are another shared activity. Azuri loves animals, especially her friend Billy Goat; one of her favorite things to do is feed him carrots. Aside from being fun for both mother and daughter, these trips are an early introduction to helping others, as the Haryanis donate to the farm and participate in its fundraising efforts. Divya is already proud of her daughter’s confidence. “She has a voice. She’s not a timid girl.”

3/29/22 9:54 AM

Azuri loves helping her mother with her makeup. Little brother Devin looks on with curiosity.

When thinking about her daughter’s future, she adds, “I really want her to do what she wants to do.” That said, at least for now, this little girl wants to do everything her mommy does. She puts on her “work clothes,” gets her “work bag,” and is delighted to receive skin care products for trick or treat. She asks for facials and will rest quietly for 30 minutes while her mother complies. A sense of wonder regarding motherhood, an awareness that her choices now are shaping her daughter’s life, that she’s “influencing a human being,” are still close to the surface for Divya. She’s learning to prioritize one thing at a time and use her resources to help. And while she’s quick to dispel the myth that women can do it all and do it perfectly, she’s being intentional about her choices and carving out special time to create those lasting bonds. “It’s one step at a time,” she says. “It’s been really fun.”

One of the surprises of motherhood for Divya was how quickly her daughter’s funny and playful personality emerged.

“One foot in front of the other.” That’s what Sophie Bentham-Wood, director of marketing and communications at Vero Beach Museum of Art, tells her daughter when she tires. Olivia hadn’t yet been born the first time her mother took her on a run. She has also hit her stride while pushing her daughter in a buggy and even carrying her piggyback style. Today she runs alongside 13-year-old Olivia, a kind and confident seventh-grader who shares her mother’s passion for sports. The list of races they’ve run together is long and includes the Frightening 4K, which they have been doing every year since Olivia was 6 or 7. Olivia dons her cat costume, her mother dresses as a witch, and they’re off and running. Sophie often pulls ahead and then circles back for her daughter, encouraging her to keep going. They share a long laugh over the time Olivia “dropped a tail” and the person behind them picked it up and brought it to them. “That was a tricky one,” Sophie explains. “After that we started using safety pins.” While a recalcitrant tail may not rank among life’s great obstacles, Olivia is proud of how her mother deals with challenges. “If there’s a bump in the road, my mom’s just going to run over it.” She mimes kicking an obstacle out of the way. “All right, bump, we’re going to stomp on you and go. It’s full speed ahead.”

3/29/22 9:55 AM

For her part, Sophie is proud of her daughter’s generous nature. “She has a very big heart,” she says, adding, “Olivia is incredibly sensitive, caring, and thoughtful to others.” Her mother isn’t the only one who thinks so. Olivia has been honored at school and has bypassed birthday gifts and parties to donate instead to her favorite charity, Raining Cats Rescue. Even when they aren’t running, Sophie and Olivia keep putting one foot in front of the other. Their “midnight walks” around the neighborhood offer a slower-paced opportunity for them to bond. They head out in the late evening, usually on a weekend, and “chat through” all sorts of topics. “We regroup and review,” Olivia explains. “I tell her everything.” Finding that time to talk and listen and laugh together—without distractions and without rushing to judgment—is the key to keeping this relationship close. “She’s always there for me,” Olivia says. Offering advice to other daughters, she adds, “You have to trust each other.”

Sophie and her husband met and married while working in Englsnd. Olivia was born after the couple moved to Vero Beach.

The cat and the witch are a familiar sight at the annual Frightening 4K fun run.

Sunday Suppers Matilde & Elizabeth Sorensen

MARTINA TANNERY

Picture a pergola, the tendrils of a grapevine twirling tightly around its slats. This particular grapevine has its roots in the Dominican Republic, in Matilde Sorensen’s childhood home. Cuttings from that vine have traveled with her to every home she’s lived in, since first moving here as a bride in 1972. Now her daughter Elizabeth has her own pergola with a cutting from that same grapevine climbing its slats. Those tightly twined vines are an apt metaphor for the relationship between these two women, who work together in the family real estate business. Elizabeth describes her mother as also a friend and mentor. “There’s a lot on her shoulders,” she explains. “I’m proud of how she handles our family and how hard she works for us and her grandchildren.”

“Mothers and daughters are very close in the Dominican Republic,” Matilde adds. “I’m proud of my daughter’s work ethic, and how caring she is, and how she loves her child.” The conversation is thick with laughter, and the affection between the women is palpable. “We’re truly lucky that we get along so well,” Elizabeth says. Maybe it’s luck, or maybe it’s all those Sunday suppers. Every Sunday, “for forever,” family and friends have been making time to gather and share a meal around a beautifully set table. Matilde and Elizabeth love to cook together, whether they are making a simple favorite, experimenting with the fragrant spices they bring home from their travels, or preparing traditional recipes passed down through the years. One of those recipes is stuffed grape leaves, made with leaves from that vine twisting up the pergola. “When the leaves are soft,” Elizabeth explains, “we pick them and blanch them, then we stuff and roll each one.” It’s a labor of love, and that just might be the key to their secret for staying close.

Tea Time

Emmy; her great-grandmother Barbara Harrison; her mother, Diana Dichter; and her grandmother Colleen Keat pull out the good china and dress up to share a festive weekend tea.

Barbara Harrison & Colleen Keat, Diana Dichter & Emmy

VERO BEACH MAGAZINE MAY 2022

For one Vero Beach family, “the tea kettle is always on.” This mother-daughter duo is actually a four-generation quad. The youngest of the group, 16-year-old Emmy, joins her mother, Diana Dichter; her grandmother Colleen Keat; and her great-grandmother Barbara Harrison to share the secret of how they mind the gap across the generations. Barbara, the matriarch of the group, came by her love of tea honestly. Born in Altoona, Pennsylvania, she married a man from Liverpool and moved with him to England, where they owned hotels in Devon and North Wales. For more than 20 years, they shuttered the hotels from November through April, fleeing England’s dreary winter to enjoy Florida’s sunshine and spend time with Barbara’s mother in Vero Beach. Gathering to share a pot of tea is all about family bonding, she says, “just sitting together and communicating.” She adds, “It makes the children better citizens.” Barbara’s daughter Colleen Keat met her husband while she was working in her family’s hotels. A nurse at Gifford Middle School, she continues to make frequent trips to England. For her, teatime is one of the traditions that keeps her memories of her father, who died at age 92, alive. “Smoked kippers for breakfast and a pot of tea,” she remembers fondly.

134

Mother's Day_MAY22.indd 134

3/28/22 12:30 PM

Diana Dichter, who moved with her family back from Utah so her children could grow up with their grandparents and greatgrandparents, says they are always looking for an excuse to celebrate. Weekly tea parties at her house are special events. “We always use real china,” she says, “and we love to dress up.” Colleen elaborates: “My mother brings out her jewelry and acts like the queen.” Amidst laughter, Emmy adds that “keeping it classy” is the family norm, and Colleen chimes in, “You have to cover up the good bits!” The tea (Typhoo or PG Tips—both century-old British brands) matters, as does taking the time to prepare it properly. What matters most, though, is the conversation. For Emmy, a busy high school sophomore, spending time gathered around a table to drink tea and talk is something she was “born into.” Those family teatimes have already created special memories. It’s matriarch Barbara who sums up her family’s simple secret to keeping close. “Always sitting together and communicating,” she says. “It’s a must.” `

‘EPHEMERAL CITIES’ CURRENTLY ON VIEW Findlay Galleries is pleased to present “Ephemeral Cities,” an exhibition of works by Noah Landfield, who grew up in the building that housed the studio of his father, well-known abstract painter Ronnie Landfield. The younger Landfield’s recent works are inspired by his visits to major international cities, where he observes the juxtaposition and coexistence of urban architectural structures with the forces of nature. Adopting a more painterly and gestural approach, he has embarked on a deeper journey into the meaning of his works. He often depicts objects that are thought of as permanent, overlaying them in a way that evokes their ephemerality. FINDLAY GALLERIES

‘RETROSPECTIVE’ MAY 3–27 Gallery 14 is delighted to present “Retrospective,” an exhibition of works by Viola Pace Knudsen, an artist it has represented since its inception 14 years ago. In addition to being a prolific painter of nature and wildlife, Knudsen has mastered the centuries-old art of weaving baskets from pine needles. She uses the exceptionally long needles of the Southern longleaf pine, sometimes along with palm fronds, to create her baskets, which have won awards and garnered an enthusiastic bevy of collectors. By applying ever-increasing levels of creativity, Knudsen has raised the weaving of baskets to new artistic heights. Meet the artist, explore her distinctive works, and peruse the rest of the Gallery 14 collection during the May 6 First Friday Gallery Stroll. GALLERY 14

‘SIMPLE PLEASURES’ JUNE 5–SEPTEMBER 18 Vero Beach Museum of Art welcomes the traveling exhibition “Simple Pleasures: The Art of Doris Lee.” Co-curated by Barbara L. Jones of The Westmoreland Museum of American Art and Melissa Wolfe of the Saint Louis Art Museum, the collection includes more than 70 works spanning the 1930s through the ’60s, manifesting Lee’s evolution as an artist. Lee, who achieved fame during the 1930s, worked in New York City and was a member of the Woodstock Art Colony. She was known for portraying scenes of everyday American life. Detailed realism characterized her earlier works, while she later explored more abstract interpretations of scenes. In addition to her paintings, “Simple Pleasures” also includes Lee’s drawings, prints, and commissioned commercial designs. VERO BEACH MUSEUM OF ART
