Porsche in the News Bringing you links to interesting Porsche articles from around the globe Porsche Wins Petit Le Mans The Porsche GT Team has won the final round of the 2018 IMSA Weathertech SportsCar Championship. Patrick Pilet (France), Nick Tandy (Great Britain) and Frédéric Makowiecki (France) won the Petit Le Mans race at Road Atlanta on Saturday. In the race over ten hours at Braselton, Georgia, Porsche put in a strong performance against tough competition in the GTLM class. Thanks to perfect tactics and a flawless race, the ca. 510 hp Porsche 911 RSR scored its third win of the season in the North American championship. Laurens Vanthoor (Belgium), Earl Bamber (New Zealand) and Mathieu Jaminet (France) concluded the last IMSA race of the year in sixth place. The Full Story Here

2020 Porsche 911 Spied Cruising With Current-Generation Model We’ve seen the new Porsche 911 quite often. In fact, Porsche doesn’t even seem that interested in hiding the new car anymore, because we’ve seen the 992 series from pretty much every angle. All that remains are a few bits of colored tape covering specific areas, and that will be removed in a month for the new 911’s grand debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The Full Story Here

The 2018 911GT3 Touring Might be the Best Road Car Porsche Ever Made Every once in a while, Porsche makes the right combination of revisions, throws together the perfect selection of parts, and comes up with something brilliant. The Porsche 911 GT3 Touring is exactly that. We took the big-wing and PDK-equipped 991.2 GT3 on a road trip from London to Le Mans and back. Then we drove the Carrera T, and told you how it was perfect if you can’t afford the GT3. This time, though, we’ve heard so many people saying that the Porsche 911 GT3 Touring was “the best.” The Full Story Here

10 Hidden Gems Inside Porsche’s Private Warehouse In a facility, so secret, only museum curators are allowed to enter it frequently. Porsche has developed a reputation for producing some of the best sports cars the world has ever seen. Its expertise ranges from the road to track dominance, with racing titles won including rallies, Group C, endurance races, and everything in between. Its on-road exploits aren’t without substantial credo either – refusing to conform to the standard set by others, bettering others with its unusual engineering makes them truly unique. No other pinnacle performance car manufacturer hangs the engine of its most important model behind the back axle.. See the Full Story Here

Porsche in the News Bringing you links to interesting Porsche articles from around the globe The 20 Best Wheels Ever to See the Road Getting the proper ratio of wheel-to-car is one of the top missions for a car designer. It can make or break the entire design. But once that sweet spot is found — what then? Do you just slap any old wheel on there and call it a day? Not a chance: rim design is almost as important as any other aspect of the car. The rims have to match the spirit of the design in theme, performance or character — or, preferably, all three at once. It should be no surprise, then, that some of the most iconic cars to ever hit the road have the most incredible sets of wheels to match. The Full Story Here

Forum Photos Prove Rennsport Reunion VI Was One for the Ages If you couldn’t make it this year, this is the next best thing. When people think automotive love-fests, they usually think of the hippiecentric Volkswagen world. But for the real thing, you’d have to look at Volkswagen’s cousin, Porsche. In 2001, Porsche Cars North America and legendary driver Brian Redman held the first Rennsport (German for “motorsport”) Reunion at Lime Rock, Connecticut. Since then, the historic races have grown in stature and attendance. The Full Story Here

2019 CHEVROLET CORVETTE ZR1 VS. 2018 PORSCHE 911 GT2 RS COMPARISON: POWER DOWN Do you ever wonder where this is all going to end? More power, bigger wings, better aero, fatter tires. Remember when the '90s Porsche 911 Turbo and Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 hit 400 horsepower? We thought we were all going to die. Yet now we're close to doubling that. What hath the demon seed of technology wrought? With such existential theorizing in mind, we present the ever-rising top of the upward spiral: the 2019 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 with ZTK package and the 2018 Porsche GT2 RS Weissach Edition. Every 911 Variant In Under 5 Minutes

Porsche currently sells 24 variations of the 911, so keeping them all in order can be a bit tricky. Even Porsche itself admits there may be some people who simply don't know which 911 is which. That's why the company has decided to post a clever explanation video, which details each of the 24 variations of the 911 in less than five minutes. If you've always been confused by the 911 lineup, this is the video for you. The video is filmed like a story, detailing all of the 911 models from the base Carrera model up to the bonkers GT2 RS. All of the variants act as their own page in a book and we are introduced to a new 911 variant on each page, along with a short backstory. The explanation begins with the base Carrera model, which was named after the famous Carrera Panamerican race in Mexico. It then goes into detail about the various 911 body styles and drivetrain options, including the convertible and all-wheel-drive models. Bring Back the 912

Jim Hemig

Should Porsche bring back the 912? This is the random stuff I think of while daydreaming about my favorite automotive obsession. When you spend as much time in the garage as I do, it’s hard not to wander in thought. I’d bet I’m not the first or only person to think about this. I believe the conditions and rationale for a slower and less expensive 911 are similar to those discussed during the days the first 912 was introduced. With the original 911 priced beyond some enthusiasts' pocketbooks, Porsche introduced a 911 with a fourcylinder 356 engine and, voila, the 912 was born. But we all know that history. And today? What’s my argument to bring the 912 back? The 911 of today has turned into a beast. It gets faster and faster with each new model. The fenders now flare out to outlandish portions compared to the first 911. And the price! Don’t get me started. I’m not complaining here. The 911 is an amazing car. It’s a thoroughbred sport driving machine that people with the right funds will undoubtedly enjoy. But the reality is that it’s too much machine and too much money for someone like me. Heck, I really don’t need 305/30R20 tires to get around. If someone gave me one of these new 911s, would I take it? Of course! I’m sure some will say that the Boxster or Cayman is the car for the “less than 911” crowd. While I’ll agree with that (and I own a Boxster) it just isn’t the same thing. A 911 is just … better. It’s better because of the design, the shape, the performance, the history, the motorsports tradition, and, honestly, I look way cooler in a 911 than a Boxster. At least I think I do. Like I said, my mind wanders while in the garage… So, what about a new 912? Porsche could take the classic 911 shape that we all love, replace the massive six with a four-cylinder turbo from the 718 and, voila again, the 912 is reborn. But I’m not thinking a hulking 992 version of a 912 but a slimmer more svelte version reminiscent of the first 911 (and 912). Wouldn’t it be cool to have a modern version of the classic 911 shape? I wouldn’t want to suggest that Porsche throw out all the current 911 development. But a 912 could sneak in and do something wonderful by filling the niche that some of us lovers of the old 911 long for. Can you imagine a light and nimble two-seater that wasn’t too fast, handled well, and was easy on the pocketbook? Wait, that was the 912 of yesteryear.

20

History even looks fondly at the 912. At PCA Concours events I see people admiring a well-cared for 912 with the same glee as an early 911. Owners of these 912s hold their heads high with pride that their cars are still cherished by the Porsche community. Bringing the 718 name back into the lineup shows the folks at Porsche care about the marque’s history. So why not bring the 912 name back? Better yet, instead of just bringing it back, bring it into the future. This new 912 could be a fully electric car. A streamlined and lighter classic 911 shape with a small battery and electric motor in the rear could appeal to environmentally-conscious and entry-level Porsche buyers alike, while still retaining the mighty 911 name at the top of the petrol-fueled market. Porsche could have this new 912 as the entry electric car and the upcoming Taycan as a top-end electric sedan. Then the Boxster/Cayman line would continue as the entry-level gas-powered vehicle with the 911 as the top-ofclass automobile that it already is. I can’t forget to mention the Macan and Cayenne line up and the SUV stepping-stone price points of these models. This new 912 could help round out the entire Porsche line up. With electric cars all the rage these days, I think this smaller electric car would be a hit with the younger crowd too. After all, not everyone needs four doors these days. I’d bet an electric 912 would be a hit at the upcoming Formula E races that Porsche is entering in 20192020. As the young, and young at heart, flock to these metro city racing events, I believe a little 912 would be an instant hit with the millennial crowd. As my garage-time think-fest comes to an end, if Porsche built an entry-level electric 912, I know I’d buy one. And, of course, I’d look cool driving it.

21

Chesapeake Region

Rennsport Reunion VI Steve Graham Walking through the paddock I came across this pair of 911s. I was in eye candy overload, but the "Towson Maryland" caught my eye. Both cars were raced by Bruce Jennings at the 12 hours of Sebring; Tangerine being a 1969 911S and the yellow car I believe a 911T. Both in fabulous condition and I love rallye lights on the front of an early 911.

The 919 tribute car is on a world tour to 15 locations, with Rennsport VI being the 12th stop on the tour. It will be retired to the Porsche Museum at the end of the year. Timo Bernhard was the pilot (anything with a pitot tube for the speedo has a pilot and not a driver) and speeds through the timing trap were 180+MPH.

Treffen—where you can experience the best driving roads across North America, offering exceptional vistas and unforgettable adventures. But, of course, the primary reason for touring this fairytale Canadian oasis is the awe-inspiring mountain vistas and scenic drives throughout Banff National Park. Driving routes like the worldfamous Icefields Parkway offer access to dizzying mountains, hanging lakes and glaciers. Each Treffen North America has two days of fun and challenging "Drives" to attractions in the local area. Saturday's "Navigator's Day Off" (NDO) activities include guided “Tours” to various local destinations. So we pick up the narration from Patrick and Susan on Day One!

It is there that we are now getting service from Keith Martin. If everything goes right today, we should be back on the road. Tires are very hard to find for vehicles such as ours. Perhaps Porsche should make Keith's operation an authorized dealer for Roanoke, just saying.”

“Our trip did not have an auspicious beginning. On day one we blew a rear tire and are just now trying to resolve the situation. Lots of road repair everywhere.

Here is a photo with Keith Martin at his Porsche service garage and one of Van Coble. Keith was introduced to us by Van, both Blue Ridge Region members of PCA, who happened to see our plight On the brighter side we met a couple of Good Sa- on an access road near Roanoke, Virginia. With Keith's help my wife and I were able to get a new maritan PCA members from the Blue Ridge retire to replace the blow out we encountered on gion. Van Cobb noticed our vehicle as he was the first day of our vacation. Now after over 9700+ miles on this particularly long vacation, we had no more problems and were very thankful to Keith for his assistance in getting us back on the road so quickly. Thank you Blue Ridge Region.

After the bump in the road caused us to replace a rear tire, our travels were uneventful for the remainder of the trip.

1 Dec - Tech Session Randy Richter We know quite a number of our members enjoy doing their own maintenance. Thanks to Porsche of Annapolis we will have a program that will cover what maintenance a do-it-yourselfer can perform and how to document that maintenance to properly maintain a warranty. There will also be a discussion on what a do-it-your-selfer should not do because of specialized knowledge and tools that only Porsche of Annapolis would possess. Additionally, there will a discussion about what should be inspected or measured each time the standard oil change and air filter service is performed. Please join us to enjoy this program and to discuss any questions you may have about maintenance for your Porsche. Registration will limited to 60 participants.

51 People in 28 Porsches Join Eastern Shore Tour to Hoopers Island PCA Chesapeake 2018 Tour No. 11, Oct. 7, Sunday Many people who visit Maryland's Eastern Shore are often drawn to the beach in Ocean City or the beaches in neighboring Delaware. Whether they come from other parts of Maryland or from farther away, most usually head to their destinations via the flat, straight and boring highways that crisscross the Delmarva Peninsula. Interesting back roads exist there, but they often lead to dead-ends on private properties or bodies of water. The big challenge for driving enthusiasts is to find and string together a sufficient number of roads that are scenic, off the beaten path and delightful. Easton resident and PCA member Tom Divilio met that challenge in the spring of 2018 when he designed an Eastern Shore tour route and then proposed it to me. Soon after, I drove over there and checked out the route with him. I liked it. So, fellow Tour & Rally Committee Co-Chair Randy Moss and I agreed to add Tom's tour to PCA Chesapeake's 2018 Tour & Rally Schedule. I eventually made one major change in the route. Instead of using the Cambridge-Dorchester Airport as the starting place, I chose a location in Easton as the assembly and launch point – in particular, the parking lot of CPR Classic East, a renowned vintage Porsche restoration shop. CPR Classic East principal Bruce Wakefield kindly and gladly approved our plan to use his parking lot. And more than that, he generously volunteered to provide coffee and doughnuts, as well as guided tours of his facility. So, on the morning of Oct. 7, Sunday, all preparations were in place. In perfect weather, 49 people in 27 cars assembled in Easton starting at 8:30 AM to avail of Bruce's hospitality. We then held a drivers' meeting at 9:30, as scheduled, and departed a little after 10:00 in three groups of cars, led by Tom and grandson Max Divilio, Mark Epstein and Wendy Tand, as well as Myrna and me, respectively, with Randy Moss serving as launch director and overall sweeper with Michelle’s help. We made an intermediate stop for about 15 minutes at the Cambridge-Dorchester Airport, where one PCA couple in a Boxster joined the tour, raising our total to 51 people in 28 cars. Altogether, we drove about 60 miles, mostly on charming and enjoyable back roads with little to no other traffic until, via a causeway, we reached Hoopers Island. We then made a U-turn and drove back a few miles A to our lunch destination, Old Salty's Restaurant in Fishing Creek, MD. We all got there at around noon. Prearranged by Tom, our buffet consisted of crab cakes, fried chicken, roast pork, garden salad, mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, and other side dishes, plus soft drinks, iced tea and water. Before lunch, tour participants had a chance to examine the 28 assembled Porsches and vote for their favorite. As the lunch was winding down, I announced the winning car – a rare and hard-to-get 2018 911 GT3 Touring in red owned by Scott and Tina Borden. After lunch, as the tour participants were leaving Old Salty's, many told me that they loved Tom’s tour and had a great time. On these pages, I am pleased to share the few photos I managed to take during this 11th event in our 2018 Tour & Rally Schedule.
