President's Message Spring is really here, as the trees are leafing-out and the Porsches are on the road and participating in our numerous events. Autocross: How did you like the Autocross School for your introduction to our Autocross program on April 6th, which was then followed up with “hands-on” driving on an actual course? Brad, Greg and Meilyng wanted to be sure each person received proper trailing in a classroom environment followed by a safe on-track experience. How did they do? From what I’ve been told, they were outstanding! Thank you Greg, Brad and Meilyng for your outstanding effort! The three of you take pride in what you do for the club and your professionalism is respected by the members. Again, thanks. Tour: Ron Farb was our “Guest Tourmeister” for our first Tour on April 13th. This Tour was our first of many scheduled this year for your driving pleasure. Although this is was the first of our driving Tours, the magic will continue in the many months to follow where Aniano Arao and Randy Moss will take us to West Virginia, Western Maryland, the Eastern Shore and that’s just three of the thirteen Tours they have planned as driving adventures is their middle name. So, sign up and come along for the next of many Tours this season and be marveled at the breathtaking landscapes and vistas that await you.

Porsche Swap Meet: Although the day started out with the remnants Friday night’s rain storm, the drizzle abated and the sun broke through to provide a bright and sunny afternoon for those attending the annual Hershey Porsche Swap Meet on April 20th. At 7:00am the New Freedom Restaurant & Coffee Shop hosted our gathering for a hearty breakfast followed at 8:00am for the traditional spirited group caravan drive to Hershey, PA. Upon arrival in Hershey, the many volunteers from our sister Central Pennsylvania Region greeted and directed us to the Porsche-only parking area. If you happened to notice most Porsche owners parked their cars next to the same model cars making for some very interesting groups of GT3s, 928s, 944s and early and late model 911s. Not to be outdone, there were groups of Cayennes and Macans to be seen also!

President's Message (cont’d) Volunteer Appreciation Party: Once a year we pay tribute to our Region’s volunteers by inviting them to attend, along with their spouse or a guest, to a local restaurant to enjoy a great meal at the expense of the Chesapeake Region. This year’s Volunteer Appreciation Party was held at a Region’s favorite restaurant – Houlihan’s at 8240 Gateway Overlook Drive, Elkridge, MD 21075. Houlihan’s has a private room where we all gathered at two very long tables to enjoy each other’s company and whatever we wished to eat off the menu. My Kansas City strip steak was wonderful and the appetizer of fried calamari that shared with Arlene was also delicious. Autocross No. 2: Now that it’s May, we really get into the swing of things with multiple Region events happening throughout the month. First up is the 2nd Autocross event of the season on May 4th at Prince George’s County Stadium, Bowie, MD. Here’s the link to the Volunteer Appreciation Party participants nd www.MotorsportReg.com website for the 2 Autocross event, so please register online and enjoy yourself with Region friends (https://www.motorsportreg.com/events/2019-chesapeake-autocross-2-princegeorges-stadium-bowie-pca-323410) Concours: The very next day, May 5th, is the annual 36th Deutsche Marque Concours at Nottaway Park in Vienna, Virginia. Here’s the website link for you to read more about this event (http://www.dmconcours.com/). Here’s what they have to say about this event: “This year will represent the 35th time that we have gathered with the National Capital Chapter of the BMW Car Club of America (BMWCCA), the Greater Washington Section of the Mercedes-Benz Club of America (MBCA), and the Potomac Region of the Porsche Club of America (PCA) for this terrific show.” New Member Party: On May 11th we will hold the second New Member Party (NMP), of the year and this time we will gather at Porsche Silver Spring (3141 Automobile Blvd, Silver Spring, MD 20904). So if you are a New Member and you have not attended a NMP within the last two years, please come out and meet your fellow club members and Committee Chairs. Every attending New Member will receive a “Goodie Bag” compliments of the Chesapeake Region. PCACHS Board Meeting: On the third Wednesday of every other month your PCACHS Board Members meet to discuss the business of the club. On May 15th at 6:00pm we will gather at 12 Music Fair Road, Owings Mills, MD 21117 to hold an important vote, wherein we will be voting on updating and replacing our existing Bylaws. A description of the Bylaw request to vote is shown below for your review and use. Dear Chesapeake Members: Over the past year the Chesapeake Region Executive Committee worked with the

The revised Bylaws will be available to all Chesapeake Region members for a required thirty-day review period on our website. During this period, each member is requested to review and submit their comments to the Secretary for compilation and subsequent review and disposition by the Executive Committee. Bylaws link: https://pcachs.org/revised-chspca-bylaws/ Thirty-day review period: Commences @ Noon on April 11th and concludes @ Noon May 12th Submit Comments to: secretary@pcachs.org Vote: At the May 15th Board Meeting, all attendees will be asked to vote for adoption of the revised Bylaws, so please come out to the Board Meeting and cast your vote. In 2017, the emphasis was on gimmick rallies. In 2018, driving tours and various kinds of road rallies were covered. This year, the focus will be on a competitive event called Time, Speed and Distance (TSD) Rally. Longtime PCA member and club historian Bob Rassa will be our guest instructor and rally master.” Please use the following link to read about this important event put on by our Tour Committee and Bob Rassa, Historian (https://pcachs.org/tsd-rally-school-tsd-rally/), and please register at https://clubregistration.net/. West Virginia Grand Tour: Do you remember hearing about the wonderful time members had driving the mountains of West Virginia! Well here is your chance to make and tell your own stories as the Tour Committee will take you away from the city and the area for an enjoyable 3-day Tour and driving event to hills and mountains of West Virginia on May 31st through June 2nd. Similar to the Tour and Rally School, please use the following link to register for this fun filled Touring event that is the only 3-day Tour of the year (https://clubregistration.net/).

Chesapeake Challenge For over 40 years, Chesapeake Region has invited its members and friends to celebrate the annual Chesapeake Challenge – the oldest running multi-event weekend in PCA history. The first Chesapeake Challenge was held August 2-4, 1968 at the Holiday Inn on Loch Raven Blvd. in Towson, with the Concours d’Elegance staged on the front lawn of Goucher College. The two Porsche dealers in the area at the time, Knowlton “Pappy” Long’s Stuttgart Imports and Charles Gillet’s 40 West Motors, donated the trophies. Pappy passed away right after the 3rd Challenge, and the 1st Overall Award was designated in his honor thereafter.

The Challenge became quickly popular among Mid Atlantic owners, and attendance grew to well over a hundred cars in the ensuing years. The Challenge has moved around Maryland throughout its history. Cumberland, Havre de Grace, Annapolis, Timonium, and Columbia are among the locations that have hosted the Challenge. The event has been held in the spring, summer, and fall, and in the beginning, included a full concours, TSD rally, and autocross. We have kept the concours, added a people’s choice car show, swapped out the TSD rally for a gimmick rally, and dropped the autocross for a tech quiz. One of the great traditions of the Challenge is in commemorative license plates. Many Porsche Club members have collected these plates and proudly display them on their garage walls. From 1968-2008, the event was held as a three day event held from Friday over Saturday, with the autocross being held on Sunday morning. In 2009, the club changed the format to three events in one day. In the weeks leading up to the Challenge, not a Q-tip or cotton ball can be found on store shelves as participants pre: pare for the Concours or the People’s Choice Car Show. Then it’s on to the Gimmick Rally. There is no better way to spend a relaxing afternoon! After participants return from the Rally, they show off their Porsche knowledge with a Tech Bingo or perhaps a “Porsches in the Movies” type quiz. The participant with the highest combined scores for the three events is awarded the coveted Lufthansa (Knowlton P. Long Award) trophy. The task of finding the perfect venue and pulling everything together is in the hands of the Chesapeake Challenge Chairperson. Hats off to those who have done this job so well for forty years! This year the Chesapeake Challenge celebrates its 50th Anniversary and this year we celebrate our history. Our Chesapeake Challenge Chairs, Minta Miller and Joan Wood, are working hard to bring back some Blasts from the Past!

SAVE THE DATE!

WV Grand Tour PCA-CHS 2019 Tour & Rally Event No. 5 – May 31st to June 2nd What made the 2017 and 2018 editions of our West Virginia Grand Tour grand? The nearly 1,000 miles some participants drove to join the fun, the fabulous roads we relished for 3 days, and the unforgettable visit to the Greenbrier Resort.

This year, our premier tour will be doubly grand, with trips not only to the legendary Greenbrier in West Virginia, above, but also to the historic Homestead Resort in Virginia, below, where we will dine.

To make this year’s grand tour even more delightful than ever, we will add new twisty roads and fresh scenic routes, and we will stay for two nights at a different venue that has more amenities and activities to offer – the Snowshoe Mountain Resort. We will conclude the tour with a return visit to Chuck Goldsborough’s historic Annamede Mansion for another memorable barbecue party.

Ab's initial interest in Porsches grew from a friendship with an engineering professor at the University of Maryland. Ab later purchased a used 356A coupe and then attended Porsche events in the Washington, D.C. area. In 1961, he became a charter member of the newly formed Chesapeake Region of the PCA in Baltimore, and President in 1963. Ab and Helen attended the 8th PCA Porsche Parade and won the 1st Overall Max Hoffman Cup. As a highly renowned engineer, retired from the AAI Corporation in Cockeysville, MD., Ab also applied his professional ability to redesign Porsche parts and tools -- something he really enjoyed. He was wellrespected for his superb knowledge of Porsche engines and concours detail. Ab redesigned and manufactured many Porsche Factory tools for a more efficient use in maintaining and servicing a Porsche. The late Porsche 4-cam mechanic, Heinz Werner Bade described Ab as a great friend...and having a relationship based on mutual respect for the knowledge that both possessed about the Porsche Marque. Heinz referred to Ab PCAer Frank Shap talks about Tiedemann as "a thinkhis long friendship with Ab. ing man's engineer." (with Helen Tiedemann) At the Celebration, Frank and Steve Shap, who met Ab in the late 1950's at Chesapeake Sports Car Club events, shared personal stories how Ab -- who was a complex and persistent guy -- did things 'Ab's way.' Others who grew up with him, played and competed against him in lacrosse, and participated with him in Porsche-related concours and autocross events -- all praised Ab as a highly respected role model. A legendary Mt. Washington Lacrosse Team member, Gene Fusting, said that "Abbie was unassuming, but an extremely competitive athlete on the playing field...who would knock your head off -- if given the chance." A consulting colleague, Joe Montelbano, recalled, "Ab Tiedemann was "the best mechanical engineer that I ever worked with at any corpora-

Other long-standing CHS members attending were: Former President, Laurie Tarsia and Bruce Tarsia, Ted and Beth Goodwin, Dave Czarnecki, Ralph Simmers, John Ballard, Ralph Peter's son, and others. In recent years, Ab was a fixture at the Annual Hershey and Ski Roundtop (PA) Swap Meets...always engaged in animated conversations, while displaying his new and improved re-designed Porsche tools and parts. Porsche In The News

Federal authorities have arrested the former executive at a South Florida Porsche dealership who disappeared in September after customers say he bilked them out of millions of dollars in deposits for 911 GT supercars that they never received. U.S. marshals on Tuesday arrested Shiraaz Sookralli, 44, the former vice president of marketing for Champion Porsche in Pompano Beach, Florida, the top-selling Porsche dealer in the U.S. He'll likely face charges of mail and wire fraud and money laundering when he's arraigned April 16. Porsche In The News

Hamburg's Morgenpost reported Friday the 31-year-old driver was stopped in the northern city last week and told his Porsche Panamera, sporting a reflective gold foil finish, might blind other drivers and was a danger. He was told to remove the foil and re-register the car, but police say he continued to drive it. The driver was stopped again Wednesday and police took his keys, papers and license plate, before the vehicle was towed to a garage. He was fined an unspecified amount and will have to remove the foil to make the car street legal again. See the full story HERE

Porsche In The News

Of the multitude of Porsche 911 body styles and variants, the Targa has one of the longest histories. Originally created in 1967 because Porsche thought the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) was going to ban convertibles, the Targa featured a removable roof panel, a stainless-steel roll bar, and either a removable plastic rear window or, later as an option, a fixed glass one.

Ever since the four-cylinder Porsche 718 Cayman and Boxster came on the scene in early 2016, Porsche enthusiasts have been buzzing over what the inevitable GT4 version would be like. Will it get a flat-six? Will it come as a manual? Will it be as good as its spectacular predecessor? While we've yet to hear anything official in regards to those questions, a recent spy video of what looks to be a 718 Cayman GT4 test mule is giving us hints of what to expect. The Full Story Here

Porsche is mulling the idea of hybrid or plug-in hybrid 718 Caymans and Boxsters in the next generation. Actually, the company has been mulling the idea for a while now, with a few prototypes built, but it's waiting to see what technology holds in the next half-decade.

“We have prototypes of the 718 running in electric now, and a hybrid prototype is being built,” Porsche chairman Oliver Blume told Autocar. “If you look to the next generation of those cars, it is possible, although it is not yet clear whether it would be plug-in hybrid or hybrid.” See the full story HERE

TSD Rally School & TSD Rally PCA-CHS 2019 Tour & Rally Event Nos. 3 & 4 – May 18

For the third year in a row, PCA Chesapeake will hold a Tour & Rally School, all in ONE DAY. In 2017, the emphasis was on gimmick rallies. In 2018, driving tours and various kinds of rallies were covered. This year, the focus will be on a competitive event called Time, Speed and Distance (TSD) Rally. Longtime PCA member and club historian Bob Rassa will be our guest instructor and rally master. WHAT IS A TSD RALLY ALL ABOUT? Porsche Parade organizers describe it this way: “A TSD Rally starts with a set of instructions specifying a route to travel and the speed at which to travel. The Rally is done in teams of two, with a driver and a navigator. The goal of the Rally is to drive the route at the correct speed and arrive at each checkpoint on time. If you drive too fast and arrive at a checkpoint early, points are deducted. Similarly, if you drive too slowly and arrive at a checkpoint late, points are deducted.” A TSD Rally, generally, is more demanding than a gimmick rally, but just as much fun and potentially more satisfying. Yes, it is a test that can stress a marriage or a friendship. But it can also strengthen and spice up a relationship. To make it constructive rather than destructive, and enjoyable rather than infuriating, participants should not take it too seriously. Competitors just need to remember that their marriage or friendship is more important than this game. Each car will be “equipped” with this reminder. School attendees will not only learn about participating in a TSD rally but will have the OPTION of putting their lessons into practice in an actual one. Bob has put together an exhilarating route made up of delightful scenic roads that twist and turn through lovely parts of Harford and Baltimore counties. The afternoon rally will be optional, gentle and low-stress. School attendees don’t have to decide whether to join until after the classroom sessions and lunch catered by Mission BBQ. They could take part either as competitors or as checkpoint crew members.

Public Service Announcements Maryland Real ID—New Drivers License Requirements If you haven’t already visited the MVA to secure a Real ID, the clock is running to meet a federal law. “Please plan ahead,” said MVA administrator, Chrissy Nizer. “The deadline is October 2020 but we don’t want our customers to wait ’till then.” By 2020, older Maryland licenses will no longer exist. The new ones will look different but even if you have one now it won’t be a Real ID until conditions are met.

“What that is, is four documents that you need to bring to your local MDOT MVA branch office,” said Nizer. “Those are proof of age and identity.” Meaning that, along with either a birth certificate or passport, you must also bring a social security card, a driver’s license, and proof of Maryland Residency, like a utility bill or a bank statement. http://www.mva.maryland.gov/realid/index.htm

**AVOID I-895** MAJOR ROADWORK ON I-895 IN BALTIMORE The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) warned motorists today to avoid I-895 and the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel due to major construction and traffic impacts beginning this month. Two-way traffic will operate on I-895 for two years starting Nov. 27. Motorists should use I-695/Key Bridge and I-95/Fort McHenry Tunnel as alternate routes. The work is part of the MDTA’s $189 million I-895 Bridge Project, announced on

Dec. 21, 2017, to replace the 60-year-old bridge north of the Harbor Tunnel. “To avoid sitting in traffic, motorists should plan on using I-695 or I-95 as alternate routes,” said Maryland Department of Transportation Secretary and MDTA Chairman Pete K. Rahn. On Nov. 27, northbound I-895 will close completely for one year from the north side of the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel to the Boston/O’Donnell Street exit ramp (Exit 11).

Two-way traffic – one lane in each direction – will operate on southbound I-895. The I-895/Holabird Avenue exit ramp (Exit 10) will close completely during this time. Additionally, the northbound bore of the Harbor Tunnel will close 24/7 for 60 days in spring 2019 with twoway traffic operating in the southbound bore. Northbound I-895 and the Holabird Avenue exit ramp will reopen to traffic in spring 2020.
