th

On the 27 , I was tracking the car (which made its way thru Denver) and I noticed that the transportation company’s Bill of Lading/Freight Bill only showed one key was sent with the car. I then emailed the dealership about this and reminded them that when I previously asked about keys, they had told me there were two. They responded quickly that they would find the other key and FedEx it out. I responded – say it with me – “umm – thanks”. th

It’s here! It’s here! It showed up today on the 30 and after a washing it looks great. Turns out it was filthy having been in the truck over a week and had dirt and dust all over it as well as something that had dripped on it (not oil). Since I haven’t registered it yet, I started playing with all the controls to learn how they work. Of course after an hour the battery went dead so now I need to take advantage of the CPO. “It’s always something”. Regardless –

IT’S HERE! Now that this whole experience is over, it begs the question would I ever buy a car sight-unseen again and do business this way given all the anxiety and problems I seemed to have encountered. I think the answer is “probably” for the right car. While the dealership certainly

16

could have been more organized in dealing with me, they were always very friendly and helpful when I asked questions or recognized problems. They did a nice job of getting the car caught up on its required service/maintenance and getting those records to me and they also replaced the front spoiler lip as a bonus. So in the future, as long as I have time to nudge, push, and engage them almost daily throughout the process, I think I would do it again. As an aside, this car is the most expensive thing I have purchased in over 25 years. As a retired Government employee, I hope I’m not making a mistake by digging into my retirement funds to get it. I guess I’ll really know in 30-ish years if I run out of money or not. Regardless, until that time, or at least until new car fever hits again and I need another Porsche, I intend to have a damn good time in it!

Porsche in the News Bringing you links to interesting Porsche articles from around the globe We drove a $175,000 Panamera Turbo to see if it's really a Porsche sports car for the whole family — here's the verdict Our 2018 Porsche Panamera Turbo Sport Turismo test car. The Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo is new for 2018. It's Porsche's first production wagon. The Panamera Turbo Sport Turismo is powered by a 550-horsepower, 4.0-liter, twin-turbocharged V8 engine. According to Porsche, the Turbo Sport Turismo can hit 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds and reach a top speed of 188 mph. We love the Sport Turismo's power, poise, luxury, tech, and versatility. However, it's very pricey. The Porsche Panamera Sport The Full Story Here

Porsche Taycan Quietly Making Rounds At The ‘Ring Again And yes, the fake exhaust tips are still there. This isn’t the first time that the Taycan, pronounced as Tie-Kahn, has been seen testing at the Nurburgring in Germany. But quite frankly, we’re not getting tired of it. Not after seeing its official specs released by Porsche. It was a handful to digest, especially its 600-horsepower (440-kilowatt) output brought about by two permanently synchronous motors – one for the front axle, the other at the back. But what do you except? it’s a Porsche, and the maker of the iconic 911 isn’t about to shatter its reputation, more so, on its first-ever, full-electric model. The Full Story Here

5 Simple Ways to Upgrade a Porsche, According to an Expert Porsche has been a standard bearer in performance for sports cars for the better half of a century. Oftentimes, collectors want to own the iconic and legendary vehicles precisely as they were the day they left the factory. But, there’s another school of thought — the outlaw way. The Full Story Here

Everything You Need To Know To Understand The Porsche 911 So, what the heck is the difference between an 'S' and a 'GTS' model? Have you ever looked at the entire Porsche 911 lineup? It's like trying to order food off the menu at the world's greatest diner. There are a million good choices, but you still don't know what to get. Porsche currently sells 24 distinct variations of the 911 – we know, we checked. The 911 ranges from around $91,000 on the low end to around $293,000 on the high end, so understanding the lineup can make a big difference. The current 991 generation car will be replaced later this year by an all-new 992 generation, but before it does we wanted to help break down Porsche's dizzying array of 911 models. Here's everything you need to know to decipher today's 911 lineup. See the Full Story Here

Porsche in the News Bringing you links to interesting Porsche articles from around the globe A Definitive Ranking of Blue Porsche 911s It’s a bit of an understatement to say that Porsche has a thing for the color blue. Since their start in 1931 they’ve released well north of 70 unique shades that have adorned everything from the 356 to the Cayenne. But no car has benefitted from Porsche’s Eiffel 65 tendencies more than the 911. Somehow the car feels like it was meant to be coated in blue since it started rolling off the line in ’63. The most recent of these being 911 Targa Design Edition, released earlier this week in Etna blue, a flat, light-toned callback to an original paint chip from the 356. We liked the color, but was it the best blue? An argument ensued and after a couple hours and a few broken bones, we ended up with a list, provided below with context where necessary. The Full Story Here

2019 New and Future Cars: Porsche Porsche is bringing sexy to electrification, but that’s not all it’s got. Forget lithe, sleek super sedans—lifted all-wheel-drive wagons (you can call them crossovers as well) are where it’s at, apparently. At least, this is the case with Porsche’s nascent Mission E family, most recently showcased with the wild Mission E Cross Turismo, featuring multiterrain capability, tons of interior space, and, crucially, a set of sweet blue wheels. Two electric motors combine to smoke the tires with 600 hp, with 60 mph arriving in about 3.3 seconds for those super-quick sprints to the beach. It’s a concept, but one that runs and drives—we took a spin behind the wheel—because it’s based on the Taycan sedan, née Mission E, Porsche’s first electric vehicle that goes into production next year. Expect a production Taycan Cross Turismo around 2021 if it gets the green light. Meanwhile, be patient if you’re a traditionalist. Porsche is hard at work on the next generation of the eternal 911, slated for a debut sometime later this or early next year. We’ve seen a whole heap of camouflaged mules, revealing the new 992 has the same sloping rear-engine design as always. Details are scant, but expect an evolution of the present 911 powertrain and performance bits, including the 3.0-liter twin-turbo flat-six and PDK dual-clutch transmission. The Full Story Here

Damn the Purists. This Is the Porsche You Want Porshe purists can be some of the most finicky enthusiasts and collectors when it comes to deeming what Porsche is worth what. They’d recommend that, if you have the capital to do so, by all means, buy a car just as it was the day it left Stuttgart — there’s nothing quite like experiencing a genuine time-hop of that magnitude. However, for the rest of us who enjoy the thrill of driving over period-correct accuracy, yet still fawn over the classic lines of vintage cars, there are hot rods and resto-mods. Dubbed ‘Outlaw Porsches‘ because even the thought of modifying a 356 is considered sacrilegious in some circles, hot-rodded or resto-modded 356s garner their own cult following. Bigger engines and brakes, better handling and more power, all under a guise of what looks like a stock 356 (to the untrained eye) provides a drive like no other. Yes, it’s nothing like it was the day it left the factory, but you can still argue if Porsche had the resources, an Outlaw Porsche is exactly what they would have built instead. The Full Story Here

Autocross Behind the Scenes Brad Martinez AUTOCROSS 2018 – THE MAKINGS OF AN AWESOME DAY! You set your goal last season and with the car at the ready, you’re up early heading to the monthly Chesapeake Autocross event site. After the car has been thru a safety inspection and you’ve received the information about your assigned run group, you walk a course of orange traffic cones, trying to decipher the turns, corners, 360 degree loops and multi-directional intersections, all of which have been designed to challenge every driving skill you possess. Finally, it’s your turn to drive, and in an adrenaline-fed run filled with gut wrenching acceleration and white knuckle turns you navigate the course in a blistering time. And as you move to the grid for your next run, a singular thought creeps into your mind, “ Wait a minute, how did this all come to be?”, and more importantly perhaps, “What role might I take on to make this even better?” Well friends, welcome to the world of Chesapeake PCA AX!

It’s an event that, just like the finely tuned, well-oiled German driving machine you own…. has a lot of moving parts; of which at least half of them you might not quite know how they work, but you are pretty sure that they are really important. So, let’s take a quick look behind the scenes and see everything that goes together to the making of a successful AX experience.

THE WINTER AX SEASON Through the efforts of a core group of volunteers, the AX season begins months before anyone is even thinking driving. That group is known as the Chesapeake AX Team , and it handles the primary logistics of the autocross season. Early in the year, while snow and ice are still on the ground, they identify and secure permission to use a suitable lot for events, as well as establishing a budget for and purchase the necessary timing, safety, and driving course equipment. There is no end to the list of tasks and protocols to be completed and established before the good weather arrives! At the same time as the above preparations are being made, interested members of the AX Team begin to design and layout the various driving courses for the season. From the introductory layouts of the early spring AX school to the devilishly tricky monster courses of the closing events, this group seeks to challenge and, ultimately hone, the driving skills of each and every competitor who chooses to participate in AX. This duel between designer and driver increases logarithmically through the season!Just as critical to a successful season, the responsibilities for the scheduling of the seasons events and online registration inclusive of the special outings such as the upcoming “Rumble at Ripken” require the focused efforts of the second half of the AX core team. This team also plans the special events like the, the yearly Autocross School, and the occasional joint event with Chesapeake Challenge or another club that really give our season a little extra spark.

24

Chesapeake Region

Autocross Behind the Scenes Brad Martinez ORGANIZING THE EVENT….. The next round of work takes place in the days leading up to the start of the event and is handled directly by the Autocross Co-Chairs. Before the event, they and the AX Team must prep all of the registration and timing systems. They download and organize all of the preregistered competitors. Each driver must be assigned a car number, car class, run group, and worker position. They also manage coordination with the Chesapeake Webmaster to upload results and rankings from previous events and with the Membership Chair to eblast information about upcoming events out to our Region. Additionally, amenities for the driving participants need to be attended to. Each month provisions such as water for the extra hot days, loaner helmets for those who need to borrow one, courtesy helmet liners, port-a-johns just because it’s a long, long day, and for special occasions, food for lunch to be provided to drivers, is all managed and presented by the AX Team.

THE DAY OF…..

cessed and logged, to which the AX Team always responds with good cheer and a welcoming attitude to all of the drivers. So, all that sounds great, but if the Autocross Co-chairs and the AX Team have it all covered what jobs are available for you to do? Well the truth is that all aspects of this and every Chesapeake PCA event are organized and managed by volunteers. And as it turns out there is a very special opportunity for the upcoming 2019 season:

Chesapeake Challenge 49 CC49 TECH QUIZ SPOILER ALERT Uh oh, the Tech boys are at it again. We are experimenting with the Tech Quiz for the Chesapeake Challenge. It has been our observation that there is a hand full of members that do well with the traditional quiz format which features questions from the far-reaching corners of the Porsche world. Unfortunately, the rest of our members do not have as much fun with the recondite nature of the quiz. We have even been told by some members that they do not even both taking the quiz as they are tired of getting their teeth kicked in by the difficult questions. We believe that taking the quiz should be fun. More importantly it should be educational as that is the mission of Tech- to teach our members about vendors, products and all things Porsche. Sorry to disappoint you if you are hoping that we are going to dumb down the test. That is not what we are planning on doing. What we are going to do is focus on only four primary topics for the quiz and tell you what those topics are so that you can do your homework. The topics for this year are: •

Porsche Cayennes and Macans. This includes the latest model Cayenne which has not yet been released in the U.S. • The American that ran Porsche AG prior to 1990. This year Excellence had a great article on this gentleman. • Tires. www.tirerack.com is a solid source of information. • The Porsche Museum

The above four topics will provide most of the questions. There will be additional questions on general knowledge that will serve as the tie breakers. As always, suggestions on how to improve future quizzes are more than welcome. Please let us know how we can tempt you to learn, test your knowledge and have some fun. Good luck and let the learning begin, Randy Richter & Jim Earlbeck Tech Co-Chairs 27

Catoctin Mountain Summer Tour By Aniano Arao

60 Members in 33 Cars Join Catoctin Mountain Tour PCA-CHS 2018 Tour No. 9, Aug. 26 Our “Catoctin Mountain Summer Tour” on Aug. 26 took 60 members on a 75-mile drive through some of the most enjoyable and lightly traveled back roads in Baltimore, Carroll, Washington and Frederick counties. This was one of our major driving events this year. It featured a route that was scenic, twisty, undulating, smooth and truly delightful. The roads were definitely worthy of our Porsches. Photo by Eric Tipton

This year’s Catoctin tour was the third time since 2016 that we drove through this Appalachian area that’s home to Camp David and Thurmont, but each event has always offered some unique features and an altered route. The biggest change this time was a return to a former lunch destination – the Catoctin Hall of the lovely Musket Ridge Golf Club in Myersville. A PCA Chesapeake tour led by Bob Purgason, Steve Graham and Mike Cook had taken us to this wonderful venue in June 2014. Before our 2018 tour, participants started gathering at the parking lot of Kecco's Neapolitan Woodfire Kitchen in Reisterstown at around 8 AM, even though the official assembly time was 8:30 AM. The early or prompt arrival of most attendees gave us ample time to stage the cars, nose-to-tail, in a horseshoe arrangement, collect waiver signatures and socialize. The drivers’ meeting began promptly at 9:00 AM. In addition to providing the usual event-specific information and general tour-related reminders, I finally decided to do something that I had been contemplating for the past three years. With the full support of fellow Tour & Rally Co-Chairman Randy Moss and a number of frequent tour participants, I addressed the issue of pace. During and after almost every tour since 2016, I had heard participants complaining about some drivers in front of them for being too leisurely. On the other hand, I had received much fewer comments about other drivers being too fast. So, at the meeting on Aug. 26, I told tour participants that experience has shown us that most drivers attending our tours can be characterized according to their driving styles, either “relaxed” or “standard.” Those who drive in a relaxed manner probably do so to fully enjoy the scenery, while those who prefer the standard style want to keep up with the lead driver and the others in front of them.

Catoctin Mountain Summer Tour By Aniano Arao

60 Members in 33 Cars Join Catoctin Mountain Tour PCA-CHS 2018 Tour No. 9, Aug. 26 I noted that mixing the two types of drivers in a caravan has proven to be a recipe for frustration or dissatisfaction. So, finding a way to separate them might improve our chances of making everyone reasonably happy. What I suggested to the Catoctin Tour participants in writing and during the drivers’ meeting was (1) for the drivers who would like to maintain a relaxed pace to stay toward the back of the caravan and (2) for the drivers who are uncomPhoto by Aniano Arao fortable with the faster pace of the cars in front of them to move aside and signal the drivers following them to go ahead and pass. Two drivers wisely took option no. 1 at the outset, while a few others who should have didn’t. I also noticed that a few who should have taken option no. 2 didn’t. Anyway, I hope everybody who took part in the Catoctin tour now know what “relaxed” and “standard” mean, and would act accordingly next time. Despite the introduction of this “new” guidance, our drivers’ meeting was over in 12 minutes. Eric Tipton and I then had adequate time to take some photos before our caravan’s 9:30 AM departure. I led the first group of 15 cars, while Eric and Kim led the second group of 17 cars. Ron and Loretta Farb were my group’s sweepers, while Randy and Michelle Moss were the second group’s sweepers. After about 75 minutes on the road, we made a brief pit stop at the Burger King in Thurmont. While we were parked there, a friendly Frederick County Sheriff’s deputy came by in his brand-new Dodge Charger patrol car and chatted with me and Chuck Marshall. Our caravan had passed by him twice on our way to our pit stop – the first time while he was talking to a motorist whom he had stopped. He turned out to be a Porsche fan, knowing what a Cayman is and saying that his favorite Porsche is the new Panamera Sport Turismo. The first group of cars arrived at Musket Ridge Golf Club at 11:46 AM, with the second group showing up a few minutes later. For lunch at the club’s Catoctin Hall, we had a Southern Style Buffet consisting of garden salad, crispy fried chicken, meatloaf, smoked Gouda mashed potato and seasoned green beans, plus iced tea, hot tea, coffee and water.

The Purgasons live in Pennsylvania but years ago chose PCA Chesapeake as their home region. Bob formerly served as a Tour & Rally co-chairman. The whole tour proceeded smoothly, as planned, with even the weather cooperating. The whole day was sunny and pleasant.

Keystone State Jaunt PCA-CHS 2018 Tour No. 8, Aug. 12 By Aniano Arao Co-Chair, Tour & Rally Committee

Our driving tour to Pennsylvania on Aug. 12 took us back to Wyndridge Farm in Dallastown, a few miles north of the Maryland line. All of us who took part in last year’s “Mason-Dixon Line Tour” had enjoyed our lunch in that lovely restaurant and brewery. Subsequently, a good number of us have returned there several times to dine and enjoy many happy hours. This year our Pennsylvania lunch destination was the same, but I gave this one-hour drive a new name because it featured a totally different route – a much better one. Some of the roads were familiar to those who had taken part in our previous tours and some were new. The combination of scenic back roads was definitely fresh. And it was thoroughly delightful.

I divided the 28 cars that departed from Reisterstown into two groups, with 14 cars each. Myrna and I led the first group, while Mark Epstein and Wendy Tand led the second group. Eric and Kim Tipton served as tour marshals, directing the flow of our cars through one tricky junction to ensure everyone’s safety. Almost as soon as we arrived at “The Barn,” Wyndridge’s banquet hall, the house salad and a special bar setup were ready for us. We then ordered our food a la carte.

The photos featured here tell the rest of the story. Some were taken by Lynda Sobus, PCA Chesapeake’s vice president. And some others were taken by Kim Tipton and by yours truly.

Thi s 48-mile tour from Reisterstown, MD, to Dallastown, PA, was held on a Sunday rather the usual Saturday. A total of 56 PCA members and 2 guests took part in this event in 30 Porsches. Four of those members and two of those cars proceeded directly to Wyndridge.
