Promote the highest standards of courtesy and safety on the roads. Promote the enjoyment and sharing of goodwill and fellowship engendered by owning a Porsche vehicle and engaging in such social or other events as may be agreeable to the membership. Promote the maintenance of the highest standards of operation and performance of the marquee by sharing and exchanging technical and mechanical information. Establish and maintain mutually beneficial relationships with Porsche AG, Porsche Cars North America (PCNA), Porsche dealers, and other independent service sources to the end that the marque shall prosper and continue to enjoy its unique leadership and position in sports car annals. Promote the interchange of ideas and suggestions with other PCA Regions throughout North America and the world, and in such cooperation as may be desirable. Establish such mutually cooperative relationships with other car clubs as may be desirable. Establish a community service initiative with the goal of engaging members to participate in activities that benefit the community through fundraising or volunteering of time. President's Message

Happy New Year Everyone! As your newly elected President, I have the honor and privilege to communicate with you on a monthly basis and discuss the goings on within the Chesapeake Region. First off, last November your Committee and Board Members met to discuss and establish the types of events, assign date(s) to each event, and resolve event date conflicts and overlaps. Happily, we were able to plan the entire year, but with the full understanding, events and dates may need to be adjusted. Ok, enough of the administrative talk – now, let’s look at what’s planned for the first three months of 2018, so please mark your calendar: 6

January 13th After Holiday Party, Turf Valley Resort (SOLD OUT within two weeks) th 17 Board and Committee Meeting (open to all members) th 24 Social, Carrabba’s, Hunt Valley, MD th 27 Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona, Party Hosted by Porsche of Silver Spring February 10th Tech Committee, Ceramic Coatings and Films th 17 Super Slot Car Night, Parkville Family Y of Maryland th 24 Tech Tactics East, PCA National Event, Easton, PA (Tentative Date) 28th Social, Location TBD March 3rd New Member Party, Porsche of Silver Spring th 9 Werks Reunion, PCA National Event, Amelia Island (9th – 11th) 14th Social, Location TBD 16th Zone 2 Driver Education, Virginia International Raceway (16th – 18th) 21st PCACHS Volunteer Appreciation Party, Carson’s Creek Restaurant 24th Tour & Rally School, Location TDB 25th Autocross, Instructor Course, Location TBD th 28 Board and Committee Meeting (open to all members)

Chesapeake Region

President's Message As you see from the above list of events, the Board and Committee Chairs are hard at work planning events for you the Chesapeake Region Membership. Remember, it may be the Porsche marque, but in some way it’s really about the companionship! I do hope you have an opportunity to take advantage of at least one of these activities and join in with your fellow members. With the Patter now in the talented hands of Al Saxon and Ron Farb, they would love to receive member feedback to learn firsthand what you think about the new newsletter design and layout? You can contact both Al and Ron at editor@pcachs.org. Ron and Al need your help, as the newsletter is only as good as the articles and photos you send them. For example, where did you vacation this past year? Were you fortunate enough to travel to Europe and drive through majestic mountains or 9th Century city states? How about your special trip to Stuttgart, Germany to see the Porsche museum and factory? Those historic cars each have a story to tell that needs to be shared, so please take a look through your photos and jot down your thoughts and quickly you’ll see those notes become a paragraph and then a story that should be shared. What better way to convey the idea that all Porsche owners should plan a trip to Stuttgart and take in the wondrous history of the Porsche than to read from a fellow PCA member.

We are always looking for new ideas and individuals willing to step up and volunteer to help out with one of the events. For example, on December 10th at the Linda’s Legacy/Kindertime Toy Drive at Porsche of Towson, we had no less than four dozen volunteers pitch-in to unbox, sort and pack 603 backpacks. At $25/backpack, the Chesapeake Region club and members contributed a total of $20,075 to Linda’s Legacy. That’s a 23.5% increase over last year’s total of 461 backpacks. Individual members contributed enough money to support 403 backpacks while the club contributed the additional 200 backpacks ($5,000) of the $20,075 total! Our continued Community Service generosity to Linda’s Legacy, First Fruit Farms and the NICU at Mercy Hospital, is very special and I truly hope we can continue this effort in 2018 and the years to come. Let’s keep in touch, talk to me at an upcoming event, or email me with whatever is on your mind at president@pcachs.org and I look forward to seeing you on the road real soon! Have fun and Drive Safely!

Michael

From Our Historian—Bob Rassa History Channel PCA-Style A monthly feature depicting some highlights from past years, 50, 40, 30, 25 years ago

in January 1968 the Club had 43 active and family members [although this would grow to almost 60 by year’s end], the incoming President was your current historian, having been elected mid-year 1967, with vice-president Steve Shap and technical chairman Knowlton “Pappy” Long who was still running Stuttgart Import, the small independent Porsche dealer located at 30 E. Susquehanna Ave in Towson and one of the very early Porsche dealerships. Here is where Art Bartholomee and Ralph Simmers worked as mechanics. Ralph opened his own shop in 1971. Plans were being firmed up for the very first Chesapeake Challenge, suggested by your historian in fall 1967 and approved by the Club and scheduled for August 2-4. The Club was meeting at the Holiday Inn North restaurant, on Joppa Rd just west of Loch Raven Blvd, having been moved there a few months ago by your scribe, to get away from the previous dark basement meeting space of the Deutches Haus Restaurant on Mount Royal Avenue near Maryland Ave. The Patter editor was the late Don Riggs, owner of a “cherry” (his words) black 56 Speedster, and the Patter was reproduced in the doctor’s office of Secretary Georgina Goodwin on their new Xerox copier. If you are surprised by the small number of members, may we also note that the entire PCA had only 3,587 members, in 62 Regions. And oh, the other Porsche dealer in Baltimore, 40 West Porsche, owned by Charles Gillet, offered a red 1949 original-condition MG-TC, right-hand-drive, 50,000 original km, for sale, at only $2,000. Trivia question: How did the Chesapeake Challenge get its name? (see end for answer)

10

in January 1978 found the club now meeting at Peerce’s Plantation Restaurant on Dulaney Valley Road across from Loch Raven Reservoir. Our club President was Ted Goodwin, who also announced the annual ski trip to Elk Mountain in central Pennsylvania. We gave you the ridiculously low cost numbers for this trip last month (for the princely sum of $47.00 each you got: 3 nights lodging, buffer dinner Saturday, AND lift tickets for 2 days). Mobil 1 synthetic oil had been introduced just 4 years earlier and folks were still concerned that it caused increased oil consumption on older cars, but we heard of a new twist from member Nick Topal. As a response to Mobil 1, Atlantic Richfield Co [remember Arco?] introduced Arco Graphite, standard engine oil named Black Gold with a graphite additive based on the tremendous slipperiness of carbon graphite and the theory that this additive would greatly improve lubrication of the engine. Nick tried it in his 914, and for a few days all was well but then his engine seized. The dealer found that the oil filter worked loose and the oil pump was depositing oil on the outside, running things dry on the inside with the engine seizure as a result. Further reports of similar occurrences led to the conclusion that the graphite worked so well that normal engine vibration allowed the oil filter to work loose. Technical Chair Lee Raskin reported to us that your battery should be removed from the car and taken inside for winter storage, since the charge would deplete much slower in a warm climate. Another member [reportedly Marsha Mello but knowing Lee’s dry humor, we question that name] said she took her 911 to a car wash and the Fuchs alloy wheels were now discolored; Lee replied that the caustic solutions found in many car washes caused this. In 1978 the NMSL (National Maximum Speed Limit) of 55 mph had been in effect for just 4 years, and states were using all sorts of tricks to catch gas-wasting speeders, such as a radar gun in a parked 18-wheeler, which was a favorite Maryland

Chesapeake Region

From Our Historian—Bob Rassa trick. Member Marty Goldsmith reported on this, noting that if you were unlucky enough to get a speeding citation, as urged by Car & Driver’s “Vote With Your Foot” campaign, that you should check your ticket carefully as any errors in entered data would make the ticked invalid. Member Joe Brady reported that he just installed a new set of Marchal Ampilux headlights that he bought from Frank Salemi’s Interstate Tire. These beauties have a 100watt Halogen high beam which really made driving at night a lot safer. [Hist. note: Marchal and Cibie’ made replacement halogen headlights in 7-in and 5-in round sizes, which were technically illegal for use in the US except for off-road. They had replaceable bulbs and all of us sports car enthusiasts used them, and yes Frank sold these along with his tires]. Oh yes, Club membership was way up to about 150 members! Finally, plans were finalized for the annual “After-Holiday” party at Doc and Alyce Sullivan’s office at 1129 N St Paul St. [See Historical Note, accompanying this article for more information on this annual institution]

Historical Note: PCA Chesapeake “After-Holiday” Party

30 years ago in 1988 found your historian in California (3 years already!) and COL Robert Gutjahr, USA, as our President. Col Bob decided to move meetings to the charming Country Fare Inn in Owings Mills, a historic building built in 1767 by Samuel Owings and operated as a restaurant since 1973. Bob reported that he intended to keep the business meeting short and focus on entertainment. Historian’s Note: We have started to include some historical information to help make these past year’s information items more meaningful; such notations are included in [brackets] Trivia answer: The Chesapeake Challenge was named in a contest we held, and Earl Harter, of Central Pennsylvania (now Pocono) Region won the naming contest. His prize was a PCA car badge, if I recall correctly.

THE FERRY PORSCHE TROPHY

THE FERRY PORSCHE TROPHY – PCA REGION OF THE YEAR CHESAPEAKE REGION Editors Note— The following write-up was submitted by our 2017 President , Claude Taylor, as our application for PCA Region of the Year. Awards are given at the annual Porsche Parade in July. The Ferry Porsche Trophy is in memory of Dr. Ferdinand (Ferry) Porsche and is presented to the outstanding PCA Region of the year. The trophy is "In Appreciation of Loyalty to the Porsche Car and the Porsche Idea". The winning Region demonstrates the highest standards in meeting the objectives and ideals of the Porsche Club of America.

SUMMARY: We are social club with a SERIOUS car problem…or so we joke amongst ourselves. But honestly, we not only love our Porsches and the events the Chesapeake Region offers, we also love serving our community, and we truly enjoy each other’s company. The Chesapeake Region serves its club members and hosts activities within the Baltimore, Annapolis and surrounding geographic area, including Maryland’s Eastern Shore. We do our best to host events in at least 1 geographic area a month. This keeps our chairs and committees very busy year round, but they and the members think it’s worth it.

LEVEL OF ACTIVITY: If there is one complaint I hear most from our members is there are too many events to choose from. Each November the Chesapeake Region Board meets to start planning events and coordinating dates for the next year. There is something for everybody every month!! Chesapeake Region offers members Concours, Community Service, Autocross, Social, Tech and Touring events.

CONCOURS: The Concours Committee (Ron Gordon, Doug Ehmann and Donna Brandt) worked hard to put on our annual Concours at our Chesapeake Challenge. The Chesapeake Challenge is a multi-event day and the Concours kicks it off. They ensured we made the most of our landscape and planned the Concours to take full advantage of the beautiful scenery as to provide the most magnificent backdrop for all of our gorgeous Porsches. Additionally, we invited our local Boy Scout Troop to the Chesapeake Challenge. One of our Chairs, Doug Ehmann, offered them not only a chance to see the Porsches up close, but also instructed them on the finer points of Concours judging. At the end of their class, the Boy Scouts judged the cars on the field and then awarded trophies to their top 3 pick.

13

Chesapeake Region

THE FERRY PORSCHE TROPHY AUTOCROSS: This year our Autocross Committee put together an outstanding autocross season. Our autocrosses are held once a month, for seven months, in a parking lot at BWI airport. A typical autocross will have on average 60 drivers in attendance. In addition to our regularly scheduled autocrosses held at BWI, they added an autocross school and premier autocross. The Introduction to Autocross (School) was held at the beginning of the season and provided new participants a ground-level look into the basics of car handling and control, progressing into concepts helping them enjoy attending one of our autocrossing events, and ending with practical demonstration with drivers getting a taste of autocross as they take their cars out on an example course – when they are done at the end of the day, after the squealing of tires and revving of engines, some of the looks on the drivers faces are priceless - that’s how we know they’re hooked!! The Premier Autocross took us away from our normal BWI Airport venue and had us set up at Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen, MD. We weren’t expecting more than a dozen or so drivers (including several of our hard core participants), but ended up having 60 drivers with more pulling up as we held the event. We had a wonderful assortment of cars run the course. The event was such a wonderful success, our members requested we offer it again in 2018. SOCIAL: We joke the Chesapeake Region is a social club with a serious car problem. Seems the joke is not so far from the truth as the members turned out in unprecedented numbers to attend this year’s social events. Chesapeake Region held 12 socials and averaged 60 members in attendance. The July social is always a favorite when we host our Annual Crab Feast. We takeover a small parking lot and a pavilion in which we eat all the crabs we can and an informal car show in which gimmick trophies are awarded. When the members feel as though there is a gap or an event they really want, they will go the lengths to contact the appropriate chair and make it happen!!

TECH: The Chesapeake Region held several Tech events this year. The two brightest stars of the Tech sessions were the Southern Region Garage Crawl and the Porsche Induction Systems at Ralphs. Our Tech Chairs try to engage everybody from the novice to the expert at all Tech Session. Some of our most successful Tech Sessions include a tour or social or both.

14

Chesapeake Region

THE FERRY PORSCHE TROPHY TOURS: The “Jewel in our Crown” is our Tours Program Our Tours Chairs worked tirelessly all year to offer our members 12 tours this year!! Our favorite tours this year were the Fall Colors Tour, the CoveredBridges Tour, and the Horse Country Tour. These events provided our members with drives on truly enjoyable and scenic back roads, over satisfying distances, and then concluded with terrific lunches at wonderful and accommodating restaurants. Administratively, we began using the GTS Routes App. It allows our Tours Chairs the opportunity to map out all of our Tours on the App. Many of our members who miss a Tour or wish to share a Tour with others will use this app to take a tour with the routes mapped out by our chairs.

MEMBERSHIP GROWTH: Chesapeake Region is 1419 members strong!! The Chesapeake Region grew from 1307 members in January 2016 to 1419 members in December 2017. That is an increase in 112 new Chesapeake Region members for the year. Recruitment and retention are the two big “Rs” for membership. Chesapeake Region has traditionally utilized face-to-face recruiting for new members. Chesapeake Region has adapted to the changing landscape of potential member engagement by strengthening our relationships with the Porsche dealerships in our region to ensure new Porsche owners receive information regarding PCA at the time of purchase. This includes adding a third dealership in our area as a sponsor of the Chesapeake Region. Retention of members is a constant concern, and we recognize the first two years of membership are critical to the decision by each member to become a permanent PCA member. Due to this 2-year window, we encourage all members to seek out and welcome new members at all events. Due to our new relationship with a local dealership, we are able to offer 3 New Member Parties a year. We also encourage all members to wear name badges at all events in an effort to be easily identified and more approachable. Tying a name to a friendly face is critical to assisting new members in making new friendships and navigating the myriad of events Chesapeake Region routinely hosts. Name badges include a “Member Since ____” date as a method of identifying new and older members. This tends to encourage all members, new and old, to purchase name badges. Our Membership Co-Chairs are also entrusted with the bulk of communication requirements between the region and its members and they have done a tremendous job of keeping the information they are blasting, engaging, extremely helpful and all written with a great sense of humor. They are in charge of e-blasting information about upcoming events, the posting and distribution of the region-newsletter, communiqués from the board, and anything else that may be of interest to our members. But more than just communicating information, they put their own spin on the e-blasts by being creative, cute and uniquely funny with their messages, by inserting photos from previous years’ events, and relevant memes. These e-blasts have been instrumental in garnering enthusiasm among the members for upcoming events. 15

Chesapeake Region

THE FERRY PORSCHE TROPHY COMMUNITY ACTIVITY: Community Service is a major priority for Chesapeake Region. We endeavor to tie each community service or charity event with an autocross, tour, social or combination. This makes the event more enjoyable and helps to increase participation... Together our members raised over $30,000 for the community and local charities. Of the money raised, the region donated $10,000; members donated the rest individually. Additionally, they toiled in the sun to help harvest produce for local area food banks this fall and donated a Porsche caravan load of toys during our annual toy drive benefitting children in need. Chesapeake also had its annual Super Slot Car Night benefitting the local YMCA. Furthermore, the Region held an annual silent auction to benefit the local neo-natal intensive care unit. Additionally, the region raised enough money for the Linda’s Legacy charity to sponsor 650 backpacks filled with warm clothes which were distributed to local area homeless. Chesapeake region doesn’t just enjoy their cars, they really do enjoy giving back our community and it shows in every community activity we hold.

MULTI-REGION PARTICIPATION: Due to the lack of local tracks, the Chesapeake Region piggy backs off of our neighbor region, Potomac, for our DE and Track days. Because of this partnership, the Chesapeake Region shares several dual members with Potomac. Much of our multi-region participation is through dual members attending events in both regions.

NEWSLETTER AND WEBSITE EFFECTIVENESS: The Chesapeake Region’s newsletter is promptly published during the first week of each month and is fondly known as “The Patter. The region no longer prints the newsletter but distributes it electronically. The editor, Michael Murphy, works tirelessly every month to publish a top-notch newsletter. He combs through our event photographer’s and other members’ submitted photographs to ensure the articles not only read well, but also capture the mood of the event in pictures . Upon completion of the newsletter, Michael emails the Webmaster, publicity chair, and membership for circulation. Porsche—Sweeter Still! Porsche is Raising Bees and Selling Their Honey By Eric Brandt Purchasing a Porsche might be cheaper and sweeter than you thought. Sure, you could buy one of the brand’s world-class sports cars or top -notch luxury crossovers, but why have any of those when you could have a jar of honey? Porsche takes its commitment to the environment and preserving Germany’s natural resources very seriously. Part of that commitment involves maintaining 25 bee colonies and a total of 1.5 million bees at the brand’s off-road area in Saxony, Germany. These colonies were set up in May of this year and now the bees have produced their first batch of honey, resulting in about 400 kilograms (881 lbs) of lime blossom honey. It’s available for sale at the Porsche Leipzig customer center shop under the name “Turbienchen.” Why does Porsche care about bees? Bees are dying at an alarming rate. They’ve been threatened by pesticides, bacteria, viruses, and parasites and Porsche is doing its part to keep these important insects alive and pollinating Germany’s agriculture. Also, it doesn’t hurt if Porsche can make a few bucks selling their honey. Bees aren’t the only creatures being protected by Porsche. Its 326-acre nature preserve is home to various species of birds, amphibians, and mammals including Exmoor ponies. The press release also says Porsche protects aurochs (also known as urus) but we’re pretty sure that species of cattle went extinct hundreds of years ago. Either Porsche knows something we don’t or it’s referring to a similar breed of wild bovine. You also might be asking "What exactly is an auroch?" Answer: it's an extinct cattle that apparently Porsche (or someone) brought back to life. (No really, it was extinct.) Porsche is doing their part to be good environmental stewards, as should we all. So get out there, recycle some stuff, save a bee, and let some extinct mammal roam around in your backyard. :-) http://www.thedrive.com/sheetmetal/16846/porsche-is-raising-bees-and-selling-their-honey 18

After Holiday Party Porsche of Annapolis is excited to partner with PCA—Chesapeake Region to PRESENT the PREMIER EVENT of the SEASON

The After Holiday Party and Yankee Swap The social hour and dinner are spectacular enough, even in a group that defines itself as a “social club, with a serious car problem”, but the Yankee Swap makes the event. Chesapeake Region has established a reputation for the finest and fiercest Yankee Swap in PCA, one that has been copied by other regions, but never quite duplicated. A “Gift Exchange” is merely a mild description of the feeding frenzy that takes hold at this triple steal event. Chesapeake Region, despite being below the Mason Dixon Line, puts the “Yankee” into Yankee Swap…. The good stuff is coveted, hoarded and only grudgingly given up under duress. With a suggested minimum value of $40, these are some great gifts! The original emcee team of Alban and Gutjahr, more popularly known as The Bob and Manny Show, will once again host this sell-out event. WHEN: Saturday January 13, 2018 6pm - 11pm AGENDA:

REGISTRATION: Register via ClubRegistration.net or drop Jim Earlbeck, our Tech Chair, an email at jearlbeck@earlbeck.com so that he knows who is coming and how many donuts to buy. Registration will also make you eligible for the $250 gift certificate raffle! Our first Tech Event of the year will happen at Reflected Images Detailing. This is not your average Tech event. We are starting this year off in strong form. Brian Daly, of Reflected Images, has realized that Porsche owners are amongst his favorite customers as our cars are not garage queens. We routinely drive our cars, race our cars and yet we still demand that they look their best. Brian has pulled together a fantastic Tech Event agenda. He will start with a brief introduction about himself and his business. He’ll quickly move into the “why”, “what” and “how” of professionally installed coatings and the differences between the over the counter and the professional products. Brian will convey the necessities of each step for the Porsche owner. A warning here- his process is not a ten minute tidy. His technique is a full wheels off, head lamps out sort of thing . No corners are cut in his process. Two cars will be used to show his tricks of the trade. Keep your fingers crossed, but hopefully both cars will be the same color, same model Porsche. That way you will be able to see the before and after. Working on the “before” demo car he will demonstrate the machines, lighting, pads and chemicals used in each step. As the coating cures we will be offered a catered lunch provided by Reflected Images. With our bellies full and our heads swimming with answers to our questions that he will field over lunch, Brian will move back onto the car to finish the process. He will recap the entire process and discuss the proper coating maintenance program. Did I say that Brian is fond of Porsche owners? He is arranging a small beer tasting to wrap things up in style and give us some more time to pick his brain. Not only will the Club be running its famous $250 gift certificate raffle to the attendees, but Brian has decided to sweeten the deal even more. Reflected Images and CQuartz coating will be giving away a special gift to each registered attendee! Brian has also arranged for a representative from the DuPont Registry to be present at this meeting. The DuPont Registry is interested in how we function as a club thru Tech and our other events. They will be posting social media of what occurs that day. So put on your best Club togs and made it to this event. It is going to be big! Maybe too big, so register early as we are going to limit it to 60 people.

Linda’s Legacy Backpacks LINDA'S LEGACY BACKPACKS: $25 sponsored one backpack filled with a sweatshirt, thermal underwear, warm socks, gloves and a hat. The backpacks were distributed on Christmas Eve to homeless men, women and children in Baltimore, DC and Anne Arundel County. On December 10th at the Linda’s Legacy/Kindertime Toy Drive at Porsche of Towson, we had no less than four dozen volunteers pitch-in to unbox, sort and pack 603 backpacks. At $25/backpack, the Chesapeake Region club and members contributed a total of $20,075 to Linda’s Legacy. That’s a 23.5% increase over last year’s total of 461 backpacks. Individual members contributed enough money to support 403 backpacks while the club donated the additional 200 backpacks ($5,000) for this worthy cause.

Tour & Social—Kindertime 51 Members Join Monkton LUNCH SOCIAL After 2017 Kindertime Toy Drive TOUR Snow Prompts Use of Shorter Route From Porsche of Towson to Manor Tavern By Aniano Arao Co-Chair, Tour & Rally Committee The Chesapeake Region of the Porsche Club of America held its 12th and last driving tour of 2017 on Dec. 10. Thirty-five members, spouses and guests in 19 cars joined a truncated jaunt from Porsche of Towson to the Manor Tavern in Monkton. Sixteen others in eight cars drove to the restaurant on their own. Altogether, 51 people in 27 cars joined the lunch social that followed our annual Kindertime Toy Drive for the less fortunate children in the Baltimore area, and our annual Linda's Legacy charity event for the homeless. About a hundred members had attended the Towson gathering. The season's first snowfall in Central Maryland the day before and its aftermath prompted me to use a direct 13-mile (better safe than sorry) route instead of the 27-mile scenic drive that I had originally planned. No doubt a result of the wintry conditions, several participants brought their SUVs and daily drivers rather than their sports cars. Moreover, the tour was made up of a significantly greater number of non-Porsches than usual.

Among the lunch attendees were Claude Taylor and Michael Murphy, the outgoing president and the incoming leader of PCA’s Chesapeake Region, respectively.
