President's Message Let’s take a look at the past December and the future January PCACHS events It’s our tradition to pick an early Sunday in each December where we hold two charitable events on the same day. This year was no exception where we opened our hearts and wallets and contributed toys to Pete O’Neal’s Kindertime Toy Drive charity, and donated $25 for the purchase of each new backpack filled with winter clothing for the Giving Back - Linda’s Legacy charitable organization.

January 2019 Happy New Year! It’s a great time to be a member of PCA and be a Porsche owner. As a PCA member we have a full calendar of events already planned for 2019. Here’s a link to our online calendar (http:// pcachs.org/activities-events/calendar-ofevents/), where you can review each month and print the current, next three, or next six months of the calendar. So why not print and attach it to your refrigerator for reference!

8

December 9th was the selected Sunday where we gathered at Porsche of Towson to assemble and fill the hundreds of memberpurchased backpacks for the Giving Back Linda’s Legacy charity. As a result of your generosity, a total of $10,000 was donated to purchase 400 backpacks. Also, your Chesapeake Region Executive Committee donated an additional $1,250 for 50 backpacks, making a Grand Total of $11,250 in contributions to purchase 450 backpacks! Videographer Pete O’Neal of Channel 2 WMAR TV founded the Kindertime Toy Drive after the discovery of his own mothers’ murder while covering crime for Channel 2. That tragedy propelled Pete to create the Kindertime Toy Drive twenty years ago where he resolved to make sure needy inner-city children receive a donated toy at Christmas. Pete joined us on the morning of December 9th to personally thank each member for their toy donation. Also in attendance were

Chesapeake Region

President's Message three uniformed members of the Baltimore Police Department who assisted Pete in the collection and distribution of the toys. Following the charity events, Aniano Arao and Randy Moss created - and Ron Farb and Eric Tipton managed - a tour through the Baltimore County countryside to Manor Tavern for a delicious brunch. Yes, a special thanks to Ron and Eric for volunteering while Aniano is in Colorado and Randy is in Florida.

I’m happy that there is no snow on the ground right now, but I don’t think it will last much longer. Let’s hope the snow stays away until after our After-Holiday Party on January 12th at the Turf Valley Inn. Just so you know -- we moved the “Happy Hour” up thirty minutes to 5:30pm on the 12th to make sure the “Yankee Swap” portion of the party does not run too late.

Lastly, for all our sports car racing fans, please don’t forget the Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona is scheduled for Saturday, January 26th through Sunday, January 27th. Watch your email for an e-Blast that may announce plans for a Porsche of Silver Spring hosted viewing of the race on Saturday the 26th. So please have a safe and happy New Year with your family and friends, and I’ll see you at our annual After Holiday Party on January 12th at Turf Valley Inn. And, as always, please keep in touch by emailing me at president@pcachs.org with your club ideas, comments and questions. I look forward to seeing you soon, and have many fun and safe drives in 2019!

Best - Michael ***

Our first Board of Directors Meeting is scheduled for January 16th at 6:00pm and will take place at PCA National Headquarters. A special thanks to Vu Nguyen, National Executive Director, for accommodating us at PCA National. History Channel PCA-Style A monthly feature depicting some highlights from past years, 50, 40, 30, 25 years ago Bob Rassa—Club Historian

40 years ago In January 1979 we have no archive PATTER so we are clueless as to what happened, but for February the Region was still meeting at the Pirate’s Cove, Bob Derrenberger was the new PATTER editor, and Marty Goldsmith had taken the reins as President. Marty announced that he felt that PCA-CHS should drop our membership in the Baltimore Area Sports Car Council (BASCC) as their requirements and the need to inject more vitality into CHS programs made membership not in our best interests. [The BASCC was the coordinating body for Baltimore area sports car clubs, with 8 member clubs. They sponsored the Team Trophy Rallye series, as well as the Team Trophy Autocross series, initiated incidentally by this writer during Chairmanship of the Council in 1969 or 1970]. Bill Morgenstern had a nice piece on summer vacation planning, this being the dead of winter [Bill was always the odd duck, bringing up the funniest things at the wrongest times]. Mark Schuman had a very appropriate piece on controlling rust in the jack points of pretty much all models, indicating that if you drive your Porsche in bad weather, you WILL have rust in the jack points, which could result in a surprise drop of your car at the most inappropriate time. He noted that for 356 and 911s, Porsche had replacement jack points that can be welded in, but not so for the unlucky 914 owners. Tech Chair Dick Rochfort told sad tales about airbox explosions on ‘73 and later 911s with CIS systems, noting that Porsche’s fix was –[wait for it] - a stronger airbox to better withstand the occasional explosion. And we now know that a major snowstorm occurred on February 22 so the February meeting was canceled.

10

30 years ago January 1989 – Col Gutjahr was still President, and of all the officers, only Dennis Howard, Secretary, and Chip Reichhart, Autocross, seem to be still active today. The Region was still meeting at the Country Fare Inn. Bob talked about a joint autocross with Central Penn Region to be held at the Harrisburg Farm Show Lot, with a course mimicking the Weissach Can Am test track layout. Also announced was the after-holiday party at Martin’s Preston Room, our long-standing after-holiday at Doc and Alyce Sullivan’s St. Paul Street offices just a distant memory. It was noted that the February meeting entertainment would be an indepth 356 discussion, with Don Fowler, Dennis Frick and Lee Raskin. Another interesting item was the information that the 1989 911 Club Sport was a bit of a disaster, with only 50 of these “special edition” cars being available. The problem was that the Club Sport was 350 pounds lighter, with deletion of air conditioning, rear seats, radio and power windows, and with an increased price tag (very much so) for the privilege of having a 911 with major parts missing. [German Marketing eins-null-eins?]. Finally, it was noted that since the repeal of the 55 mph National Maximum Speed Limit, enacted in January 1974, in April 1987 all but 6 states had increased their speed limits, mostly on rural Interstate highways to 65. The holdouts were: Maryland [of course!], Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, and Massachusetts. [Who else remembers the big highway signs? “Welcome to Maryland- where the speed limit is STILL 55!] [Historian comments in brackets]

New Year, New Look! The Chesapeake Region of the Porsche Club of America (PCACHS) newsletter team has grown! Now we’re a team of three, plus an occasional hand being provided along the way. Your editorial staff includes:

Al Saxon John Lewis Larry Robinson Jim Hemig is also lending a hand here and there as his real job permits. Jim’s busy as the national PCA webmaster, as well as taking over the PCACHS webmaster duties. As we launch our inaugural 2019 issue, you’ll notice some subtle changes. The biggest change is modeling the headers and color palette on the official Porsche logo palette. We wanted to more closely align the newsletter with the Porsche marketing efforts, and reinforce the brand standards. We’re also actively soliciting ads for the patter. If you are looking to put your message in front of 1400 active Porsche owners (and the demographic that they represent!) then feel free to contact us. Rates are very reasonable! We’re adding new features as we go, and you’ll see the first monthly feature—The Lighter Side—this month. We’re looking to share news and information about our beloved cars and make the Patter your go-to monthly publication for all things Porsche. We’ve also added a Public Service Announcements (PSA) section for information that our members might need. In addition, we’ll be featuring photos by some amazing photographers—Dan Wagner is the first. Dan’s a local Cayman owner, and you’ve seen his work from the Hunt Valley Horsepower website. The first is a 2018 Carrera with Magnus Walker Outlaw wheels photographed in the rain on Park Avenue in Manhattan for the company that modified and sold it, Manhattan Motorwerks. The other is a 1991 Porsche 911 that has been restored by Singer Vehicle design in 2014. The Singer Porsche was photographed in Connecticut right outside of Greenwich. Our first Tech Event of the year will happen at Earlbeck Gases & Technologies. Come warm yourself up in Winter with the heat of a welding arc, some brain cell stimulation and the strengthening of your hand to eye co-ordination. We’ll focus on the theory and the practice of the Gas Metal Arc, which is also referred to as MIG, and Gas Tungsten Arc, which is also referred to as TIG, welding processes. After a classroom lecture on each process you will move into the welding lab for hands on practice of each process. Everyone is guaranteed plenty of hands-on time as there will be twenty-two welding booths available to us. This class is a distillation of Earlbeck Gases & Technol-

ogies standard Fundamentals of Welding program. That program runs for thirty-six hours. Your challenge, should you accept it, will be to learn and master in four hours what others do in thirty-six hours. To up the bar a little more, the PCA class will feature a lecture on the welding of the alloys that we find in our cars. Those alloys include steel, chrome moly, magnesium, aluminum and cast iron. Are you up to the challenge? If you are, sign up and come dressed to weld. Please wear cotton pants, such as jeans; work boots, Nomex driving shoes or other type of closed toe non-flammable shoes; and a long sleeve cotton shirt. Bring your helmet and your gloves if you have them. No, not your Simpson racing helmet and your Nomex gloves, but your welding helmet and welding gloves. Don’t have those? Don’t worry, we’ll have enough safety gear to keep you safe. There is a $20 per person fee for this event in order to help cover the cost of the material. This is the third time that Tech has run this event. The two previous times were sold out as it is limited to twenty students. You must be 16 years of age to attend. In the event of snow, please call Jim at 410-8024397 for cancellation information.

Porsche in the News Bringing you links to interesting Porsche articles from around the globe Here's Some Gorgeous Footage of the 690 Horsepower FlatNose Porsche 935 The Porsche 935 name is a legendary one in the racing scene, having dominated endurance races around the world in the 1970s. But recently, after many years, Porsche showed off a new model that makes 690 horsepower, costs over $800,000, and looks just as stunning as the original. Here’s a close look at the car on the track and in the studio. The Full Story Here

Your Ridiculously Awesome Porsche 911 Turbo Wallpapers Are Here The new hotness may be the 992 that dropped in Los Angeles this week, but that doesn’t make the outgoing car any less awesome. It’s extremely hard to top any 911, but the one we saw over the past few years set the bar very high. It looks great, too, and always will. So from photographer Jimmy Zhang in North Carolina comes this trio of 911 Turbo night shots that will make your desktop feel premium, fast and classy. Porsche Says 918 Hybrid Successor Must Beat 6:30 Nurburgring Time t the 2018 L.A. Auto Show, Porsche's head of motorsport Frank-Steffen Walliser revealed a bit of especially promising news about the brand's hypercar future. During an interview with Top Gear, Walliser spooned out a few details on a followup to the company's 918 Hybrid that may or may not be currently in the works. The executive was adamant about achieving one goal with this new car: a lap time around the 13-mile Nurburgring Nordschleife in under six and a half minutes. The Full Story Here

What Makes the Porsche 911 So Continually Great? It drives fabulously, sure, but there’s also glory to be found in the minor details What exactly is it that makes the Porsche 911 so great, generation after generation? The decades since its 1960s debut have been filled with countless positive reviews, yet even so, certain quirks have remained. The engine sits in the wrong place, road noise is an issue, and there are myriad ways to get more power for less—and in some cases much less—money. But the 911 remains an unimpeachable icon, an object of automotive passion and desire. See the Full Story Here

A Winter Wander

P

orsche driving season ends for me in December. My Cayman has summer tires and I have an aversion to road salt, so when the temperatures dip, the Porsche gets cleaned up, covered and put away until warmer days return. However, I really wanted to take my daughter Sarah with me on a road trip. She had just survived a 17-credit semester of differential equations, thermodynamics, organic chemistry, physics and labs at University of Maryland. The savings from her in-state tuition funded my Porsche purchase and I wanted to share with her the thrill of the excellent tours my wife Kim and I have been taking with PCA since she went away to college. Sarah and I decided we would drive Aniano Arao’s “Catoctin Mountain Tour 2017 in Maryland” route. This is a lovely 2.5hour drive through central Maryland that ends in Middletown. We’d drive the route and have lunch at The Main Cup. I had originally led one of the groups on this tour in 2017, but this time I wouldn’t be driving my Porsche. This time we’d be in my 1997 Acura Integra, a car with 205,000 miles on the odometer and less than half the horsepower of my Porsche. A car whose resale value is significantly affected by the amount of gasoline in the tank. The morning of December 26th was bright and cold, only 31 degrees. There was a layer of frost outside. I started the coffeemaker then went outside to warm up the car. I turned the key in the ignition and… urgh, urgh, click, click, click… the battery was dead. I looked over at the Camry parked next to my beloved (and aged) Integra; the Camry with its automatic transmission and soft, roly-poly suspension and I thought to myself “Nah”. Part of the adrenaline rush of a long car journey is the uncertainty of whether the car is going to make it. Kim gave me a concerned look about taking my beloved and suddenly unreliable hooptie on a long trip. Nevertheless, we persisted. Our first stop was Costco where I quickly installed a new battery in the parking lot. The old, dead battery still had a few months left on the warranty and to my surprise, Costco replaced the 3+ year old battery with a brand new one at no cost! We then headed towards Kecco’s Woodfire Kitchen in Westminster, the starting point for our tour.

We twisted and turned along Catoctin, then steep downhill and a sharp left turn onto Wolfsville Road. From here we sprinted along the heavily wooded section where the road undulates. Roads app errors were easily overcome by my smartphoneadept millennial daughter. As we headed back from Middletown, the reverse route is somehow even more scenic. Along the way we waved to the driver of a white Porsche 928, out for some driving enjoyment himself. We stopped off for a quick hike in Catoctin, then visited the Loys Station and Utica covered bridges as the sun was fading on this short winter day. As we left the backroads and headed home along Route 32, my companion was reclined and sleeping in the passenger seat. It had been a great day.

At lunch, our handsome young waiter was very attentive. Could it have had anything to do with my 19-year-old coed dining companion? We used the new Roads by Porsche app to guide us along our tour. We had previously used the GTS Routes app, but early last summer, that app unexplainedly stopped working. I’m happy to report that the new Roads app is an improvement over GTS Routes, and the GTS Routes routes are available in the Roads app. Also, the Roads app provides voice directions, a feature that was lacking in GTS Routes. However, near Wolfsville, the Loys Station Covered Bridge Roads app began losing its mind and trying to redirect us along incorrect routes. Maybe the hills were affecting the GPS. Article by Jim Hemig

I was always a PCA Region guy. My Porsche world revolved around local events and hanging out with local Porsche friends. The PCA Regions where I have lived were relatively small and far enough away from larger Zone or National events that it just made it easier to create a little Porsche club within a much larger world. My initial PCA adventures were a lot of fun. I have memories of attending events with my Porsche-owning neighbor as early as 13 years old. Riding shotgun in a white 1967 911T to a Loma Prieta Region swap meet and digging through piles of Porsche pieces to find the exact part needed was an awesome experience for a young Porsche enthusiast. Later in life I was able to first attend, then ultimately organize and lead, PCA Region events, all the while content in my little Porsche world. Helping to organize several driving tours, socials and even a two-day Zone Concours d’Elegance event was an extreme pleasure. Best of all I made some great and lifelong friends. Whether it was crawling under our Cayennes to replace drive shaft bearing supports, making apple strudel in the kitchen, or Friday lunch “meetings,” the moments spent with PCA Region friends were great times. I definitely immersed myself in the Sierra Nevada and Sacramento Valley Region activities. I could have remained happy in my little Region-world. But this year I had an opportunity to experience more of PCA. To anyone in a similar place as I was, the name of these events will sound bizarre. I was able to attend Treffen, Parade, Werks, Rennsport and Porscheplatz all in one year. These PCA National events weren’t even a consideration before. Something I didn’t even think was necessary. From the Treffen weekend touring event, to the giant Porsche-only car show that is Werks Reunion, the race viewing party known as Porscheplatz, and of course the mega weeklong Porsche Parade, each event has its own character and charm.

After a year of learning about this larger world, I wouldn’t want just go back to living in a regional world. The larger events, which mean more and better Porsche cars to see, is addicting. Plus the people. I won’t say are better or more fun than my Region friends. There are just more of them. In my region days I didn’t know this larger world existed. But now that I know, I am surprised this didn’t seem obvious at the time. So, to others out there who are content in staying close to home and happy with their PCA Region events, or maybe are new to PCA, I’d like to recommend venturing out to try a couple national events. Maybe you can make attending a national event your New Year’s resolution? I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the wonderful experience, the cars you’ll see and the people you’ll meet. The best way to keep up on PCA National events is to occasionally take a look at the PCA website and subscribe to the PCA weekly e-newsletter, e-Brake News.

Autocross Update The last Chesapeake AX of the season is in the books! I told Pat and Brad that I’d arrive early to help them set up and somehow contrived to be the first one to arrive. The conditions (cold and wind with misty rain) did not thrill me (or any of us), but it looked as if it would be better than the event we had earlier in the summer that was run in a deluge. Brad arrived shortly after I did and Pat a little bit later (he had to stop to get gas) and we immediately started putting things together.

Article by Greg Hartke Photos courtesy Linda Sobus

don’t know if he was referring to the driving or just that I didn’t have to go out and get wet with everyone else. ;)

Due to the conditions, we only had 27 drivers and we just flew through the event. The first run only took 12 minutes, so Pat decreed that there would be 7 runs, which was really great. As it turned out, the first heat took no more than 75 minutes, if you can believe that. Everyone did a great job with car control and we didn’t have any big wipe outs or spins While Pat assembled everything in and around the that I saw. I was working in the trailer during the first trailer, Brad and I started the work of assembling the heat and was impressed with the way the drivers course. That was certainly interesting in the wind were handling the turn into the stop box. I was a litand light rain, not to mention that we started well tle concerned about that because it was across the before sunrise (since we were still operating on DST slope, hence a bit off-camber, but everyone handled at that point). Brad was amazing reading our sopit quite well, with many well-controlled drifts into ping wet map and figuring out where to place the the stop box and no threats to the timing gear. Good cones in the tough conditions – I have no idea how driving! he managed. We went through multiple course The second heat had fewer drivers and we finished maps (the rain would destroy them while we were that one in less than an hour and completed the working), but eventually got it done. (We also tweaked the course a bit relative to the course map event before noon. It wasn’t raining hard (for which because of the conditions.) Since Brad’s car was still we were all thankful), but the wind, light rain, and mist were persistent. Cold, too. I’m sure everyone in pieces, I got to do the safety runs and that was fun. We made a lot of minor changes while I did mul- was very happy that we finished so early. tiple runs, but on the plus side, it at least made it unnecessary for me to walk the course and get even wetter. Slava Burmaka said I was cheating, but I

Normally I look first at the class results, but the overall results were quite interesting for this event. Of the top four places, three were taken by AWD cars with Chris Nolan leading the way in his beautiful Guards Red 2007 Turbo. Chris actually lives within the bounds of the Chesapeake region, but he mostly races with the Potomac Club. At the Potomac event the previous week, I had urged Chris to come out for our final event and he enthusiastically took up the challenge, driving extremely well and taking the overall FTD. Great job, Chris! I’ll bet he’s glad he came out. ;) Chris is an interesting study because he told me at one of the Potomac events that he rarely walks the course before racing, preferring to just go out and drive it. I was dumbfounded by this because I know I’d be a disaster if I tried to do that. It wouldn’t surprise me if the best drivers are able to do that routinely, though. (Uh… especially the young ones whose memories are still uncluttered. ;) ) Also at the previous Potomac event, I had talked Bill Schwinn into coming out to this race (he’s another excellent Potomac competitor), but I guess the conditions kept him from doing so. We missed you, Bill! Anyway, the dominance of the AWD Porsches was only broken by Scott Borden, placing third overall

in his gorgeous Carmine Red 2018 GT3 Touring. I was very impressed with Scott’s finish because it was no picnic out there and a powerful two-wheel drive car can certainly be a handful in the wet. The GT3T can really put down some power and Scott controlled it very well in the rain. Wayne Moore was second overall in his 2014 C4S and 1st in class (S4). Wayne’s another interesting driver because he’s a very soft-spoken guy who has a really loud exhaust system. We always know when Wayne’s out on the course! Fourth overall went to Slava Burmaka who regularly tears it up in S3 in a 2000 996 C4. I’m in S3 myself and it’s a great class to compete in because there are always a lot of entrants in that class – you really feel good when you do well there. Slava was first in class at every race this year (which is especially impressive in such a well-attended class!) except for one event when I edged him out by 0.009 seconds. (I figure he must have had a bad day.) Slava had an interesting time at this final event because he was having trouble finding the course for a few runs. I practically ordered him to take Brad out with him for navigation and when he finally did, he figured out where he kept getting lost and thereafter stayed on course. After that, he was only spectacular. As usual. ;)

this year.) These rainy event are tough on Pinto and me because we both like to bring our cars out to race when they’re nice and clean (they make fun of me all the time for that) and our cars get all spoogy driving in the wet conditions. Terrible!

Pinto Soin was fifth overall in his immaculate 2014 911 CS and second in class (S4) behind Wayne. Pinto is really turning into a rain monster – he’s been working hard at his racing skills and it’s really been showing in the results this year. (Pinto, Scott, Mark Hubley, Dave Critcher, and I go to almost all the Potomac events as well as the Chesapeake events, so Pinto has really been putting in the work to improve

Sixth overall and second in class went to Meilyng Burmaka, sharing the 2000 996 C4 with Slava. Meilyng regularly puts down great times and has also shown herself to be particularly adept in the rain where her smooth (but fast) driving style serves her particularly well. It certainly was interesting to see how well the AWD cars did at this event, but note that in every case, they were piloted by exceptionally good drivers. As you would expect, the cream rose to the top. Scott Borden was 1st overall among the 2WD cars, followed by Pinto (S4), Lee Rock (P5), and me (S3). BTW, it’s certainly great to see Lee getting out again on a regular basis after having to deal with some accident damage to his car. Lee’s a great driver, regularly instructs, and really adds a lot to our events.

As always, we had a number of non-Porsche friends who came out to race with us. Danny Kao (who’s always very fast) led the way in his 2007 Honda Civic Si (5th overall), followed by Alex Shadmehr in his 2016 Miata (6th overall, 2nd in class). Those new Miatas are certainly great looking cars and from the results at this race are clearly very capable AX cars, especially in the hands of a driver like Alex. We haven’t seen much of our buddy Ivan Slavov this year in his 2004 BMW M3, but he came out to this event and was 11th overall and 3rd in the non-turbo Guest class. It was good to see Ivan out with us again – I gather he was MIA from our events this season purely because of conflicts with other events. Hope to see more of you next year, Ivan! It’s also worth mentioning that Lee Towne brought out his gorgeous 2016 Jaguar F-Type R for this event and that car certainly turned my head.

The conditions weren’t the best, but we certainly had a fun time. It (perhaps unexpectedly) turned out to be a great way to close out the 2018 AX season and I’m sure we’ll all be dying to get back on the course come spring. We all owe a debt of gratitude to AX co-chairs Pat Walker and Brad Martinez for the considerable work they did to provide us with such a great season and special thanks to Pat (who’s stepping down after this season) for doing such a great job in the hot seat. Even though we’ll be missing your leadership, Pat, we’ll be happy to see you out there racing again next season in the SR-71 (which is what Pat calls his black LS-conversion 944). Of course, we also thank our sponsor (Porsche of Annapolis), whose generous support makes these events happen as well as our deepest appreciation to Lincoln Tech (Columbia) for the use of their lot as our venue for a great 2018 AX season.

The winners by class:

I’ll really be looking forward to seeing all my racing buddies next year. Have a great winter!

Tech Session

Article and photos by Randy Richter

Tech Session at Porsche of Annapolis Saturday December 1st about 55 PCA members were treated to the hospitality and technical expertise of Porsche of Annapolis. The day started clear and bright with a welcome cup of hot Dunkin Donuts coffee and a wonderful assortment of Carlson’s donuts. The tech session was framed around maintenance what was possible for the do it yourselfer and what was not practical and why. Also discussed was what records would be needed to preserve a warranty if maintenance was self performed. This was as you might expect rather uncomplicated, keep your receipts for the material you have bought so you have documentation if needed. Also, be aware that the use of nonPorsche parts is not acceptable to maintain the Porsche warranty.

Porsche of Annapolis prepared by placing a variety of vehicles on lifts so they could actively point out many of the points they were to make in the presentation. These were a 997 GT3, a Cayenne, a 991 Carrera 4 GTS, a 718 Boxster and 981 Boxster GTS. After the usual introductions Dave McDowell the Gold Meister Certified lead technician presented a presented a wide ranging talk on everything from tires to modern Porsche cooling systems. Rather than reviewing all of the presentation, you can review it at pcachs.org. Go to top of the page and click on the newly added tech library folder, then click on the Porsche of Annapolis Tech Presentation. As a brief aside, this is a new area of the PCA of the Chesapeake web site that has been put together to collect technical tips, historical tech articles and other tidbits designed to make the finding tech help just a little easier. We anticipate populating the area further going forward as we develop additional information. 27

Understanding many of the complications of the modern Porsche such as the need to open and close thermostats electronically etc, to change the coolant and not have coolant voids to cause engine overheating. Without the proper tools to do this you risk inducing failures instead of performing needed maintenance. Seeing these things helped the understanding of what maintenance is appropriate for a do it yourselfer and what is appropriate for the experts at PoA that have the appropriate tools and knowledge. Porsche of Annapolis very kindly provide a $100 gift certificate to one lucky PCA attendee. Many thanks to Brett Smith, General Manager of PoA, Rick Brewer, Service Manager, Dave McDowell Gold Meister Technician and Shop Manager and his team of technicians Stephan Ryan and Alexis Rodriquez, and Courtney the Parts Manager. Their hospitality, expertise and warm welcome were greatly appreciated on a December Saturday.

After Holiday Party The Chesapeake Region has established a reputation for the finest and fiercest Yankee Swap in PCA, one that has been copied by other regions, but never quite duplicated. A “Gift Exchange” is merely a mild description of the feeding frenzy that takes hold at this triple steal event. Chesapeake Region, despite being below the Mason Dixon Line, puts the “Yankee” into Yankee Swap…. The good stuff is coveted, hoarded and only grudgingly given up under duress. Public Service Announcements Maryland Real ID—New Drivers License Requirements If you haven’t already visited the MVA to secure a Real ID, the clock is running to meet a federal law. “Please plan ahead,” said MVA administrator, Chrissy Nizer. “The deadline is October 2020 but we don’t want our customers to wait ’till then.” By 2020, older Maryland licenses will no longer exist. The new ones will look different but even if you have one now it won’t be a Real ID until conditions are met. “What that is, is four documents that you need to bring to your local MDOT MVA branch office,” said Nizer. “Those are proof of age and identity.”

Meaning that, along with either a birth certificate or passport, you must also bring a social security card, a driver’s license, and proof of Maryland Residency, like a utility bill or a bank statement. http://www.mva.maryland.gov/realid/index.htm

**AVOID I-895** MAJOR ROADWORK ON I-895 IN BALTIMORE The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) warned motorists today to avoid I-895 and the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel due to major construction and traffic impacts beginning this month. Two-way traffic will operate on I-895 for two years starting Nov. 27. Motorists should use I-695/Key Bridge and I-95/Fort McHenry Tunnel as alternate routes. The work is part of the MDTA’s $189 million I-895 Bridge Project, announced on Dec. 21, 2017, to replace the 60-year-old bridge north of the Harbor Tunnel. “To avoid sitting in traffic, motorists should plan on using I-695 or I-95 as alternate routes,” said Maryland Department of Transportation Secretary and MDTA Chairman Pete K. Rahn. On Nov. 27, northbound I-895 will close completely for one year from the north side of the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel to the Boston/O’Donnell Street exit ramp (Exit 11).

• • • •

Two-way traffic – one lane in each direction – will operate on southbound I-895. The I-895/Holabird Avenue exit ramp (Exit 10) will close completely during this time. Additionally, the northbound bore of the Harbor Tunnel will close 24/7 for 60 days in spring 2019 with twoway traffic operating in the southbound bore. Northbound I-895 and the Holabird Avenue exit ramp will reopen to traffic in spring 2020.
