President's Message Michael Murphy portunity to view some of the finest examples Porsche ever made and meet the three owners and learn something about their cars and the reasons they were added to their respective collections. In addition to Porsche, other outstanding historic and limited production late model sports cars from Mercedes, McClaren, BMW, Lexus, Ford and others, graced the various collections. See Aniano Arao’s article in this edition of the Patter to learn more.

Were you able to participate in or attend the April 6th, 35th Deutsche Marque Concours d’Elegance at Nottoway Park in Vienna, VA? As you recall from last month’s message, this was a combined PCA Potomac, BMW and Mercedes clubs of D.C. event where the best and finest late model and classic cars were displayed for awards. Of the ten Judges, our own Ron Gordon was the Chief Judge who was assisted by fellow Chesapeake Region Judges Donna Brandt, Doug Ehmann and Steve Graham. To read the event article, head on over to Potomac Region’s webpage and read the June edition of their der Vorganger newsletter. If there was an event that the members truly loved it was the May 12th “Garage Crawl and Tour”. Your Co-Chairs, Aniano Arao and Randy Moss had the members gather at Radcliff Motors as the starting point for the Tour. Without question, the members who attended this event were treated with the op-

On the same day as the Garage Crawl and Tour, May 12th, the 2nd Autocross driving event took place. With the entire Autocross season to be held at Lincoln Tech in Columbia, Maryland, Co-Chairs Pat Walker, Brad Martinez know that the site offers an unlimited arrangement of course layouts. So mark your calendar, as the 3rd Autocross session is scheduled for June 16th. Although scheduled for Wednesday evening, May 16th, I had to postpone the 2nd Board Meeting of 2018 to May 30th, as my younger brother had died and with funeral arrangements, etc., the funeral took priority. So please remember, all members are welcomed to attend any Board Meeting, and as previously stated in my May Message, we encourage members to attend the Board Meetings to see and learn how the workings of the Chesapeake Region conducts our business and plans the 2018 events. The next Board Meeting is July 18th at Collectors Car Corral, Owings Mills, MD.

On Thursday, May 24th our Social event Chair, Donna Brandt arranged that the Social for May be held at Severn Inn overlooking the Severn River and the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, which is described as “…a dining experience that exceeds 9

Chesapeake Region

President's Message their expectations …”on their website. I received lots of positive feedback from those who attended, and thank you Donna again for taking on the role of Social Chair for the Region. I know Donna has several Socials in the planning stage, so please come out for the June Social on Thursday the 14th. Again, watch your email for Minta Miller’s announcement with the detail information. On the evening of May 23rd, your Executive Committee participated in a nation-wide webinar hosted by PCA National on the subject of Regional Bylaws. Our own Chesapeake Region Bob Gutjahr chaired the event as he is the PCA Policy Committee Chair. Not exactly a fun driving event, but none the less very important to the organization, management and success of the Chesapeake Region. We round out the end of May with the Memorial Day Weekend Gimmick Rally on May 26th where Aniano Arao and Randy Moss repurposed an original rally created by PCA member Jim Kinnear back in 2012 for the Free State Corvette Club and PCA Potomac. Six years ago, that event pitted Corvettes against Porsches and other sports cars. Jim kindly offered it to us last year and Aniano and Randy tested the route and liked its complexities. So as Minta said in her announcement…” Rally veterans will find this contest challenging and satisfying. It will require skill and concentration. But it will not be intimidating to novices. Instead, they will find it an enjoyable learning experience. We believe it will get them hooked on gimmick rallies”. Just so you know, the rally was a blast.

The month of June is kicking off with the fantastic June 1st West Virginia Grand Tour. This is the Region’s premiere multi-day Tour/driving event where Aniano Arao and Randy Moss created a Tour with unequaled accommodations and driving routes. You may not know, but each participant will have driven 1400+ miles from start to finish by the time it’s all over. Now that’s a lot miles to fit into a three-day period! I am looking forward to reading the amazing article that Aniano will write for the July Patter.

Wherever Porsches are sold and driven throughout the world, Saturday June 9th will be a special day in the history of Porsche, as it’s Porsche’s 70th Anniversary as a sports car manufacturer. To mark the celebration, each dealership is hosting a get together where current, past and potential Porsche owners are invited to participate in the festivities. Locally, Porsche of Silver Spring is hosting a “Cars and Coffee” gathering from 8:00 am to 10:00 am. The eBlast announcement of May 17th provides all of the details for the June 9th event, which indicates that there will be a raffle for 70th Anniversary hats and a limited number of free tickets to the Porsche Experience Center in either Atlanta or Los Angeles, your choice. The Experience Center winners will also receive $500 towards their air fare. WOW!

History Channel PCA-Style Bob Rassa A monthly feature depicting some highlights from past years, 50, 40, 30, 40 years ago in June 1978 found us still meeting at Peerce’s Plantation, where many would come early for dinner [and the food was quite good]. Bob Schmitt announced that since the Region had grown and changed, it was time to review the Bylaws for possible changes. [An interesting, if lengthy PATTER article on dumb drivers was written by your author and is partly reproduced here.] Did you ever wonder about drivers on the road doing dumb things like making left turns from the right hand lane, or flash a turn signal and immediately pull into your lane directly in front of you “Here I come!”? Did you wonder how they didn’t seem to have an accident? Wonder no more, they do! Here is a compilation of some of the reasons for an “accident” as reported by insurance companies. “Coming home, I drove into the wrong house and collided with a tree I don’t have.” “I collided with a stationary truck coming the other way.” “The guy was all over the road. I had to swerve a number of times before I hit him.” [obviously more practice needed here] “In my attempt to kill a fly, I drove into a telephone pole.” [must have been quite a fly] “The gentleman behind me stuck me in the backside. He then went to rest in the bushes with just his rear end showing.” [sounds like a case for the vice squad] “I was on the way to the doctor with rear end trouble when my universal joint gave way, causing me to have an accident.” [Ah, ok - - -]

16

“I was taking my canary to the hospital, it got lose and flew into the window, The next thing I saw was his rear end and there was a crash.” [Big Bird??] “My car was legally parked when it backed into the other vehicle.” “I just told the police I was not injured but when I removed my hat I found I had a fractured skull.” “I was sure the old fellow would never make it to the other side of the road when I struck him.” [another case of mercy killing we presume] “As I approached the intersection, a stop sign appeared in a place where no stop sign has ever appeared before. I was unable to stop in time to avoid an accident.” “When I saw that I could not avoid a collision, I stepped on the gas and subsequently crashed into the other car.” “The indirect cause of this accident was a little guy in a small car with a big mouth.” [a Fiat Bass maybe??] “I pulled away from the side of the road, glanced at my mother-in-law in the other seat and headed over the embankment.” [yep. We know that woman] “I had been shopping for plants all day and when I was on my way home, as I reached an intersection a hedge sprang up obscuring my vision and I did not see the other car.” [Gotta get me some of that fertilizer!]

stretch’’’]

Chesapeake Region

History Channel PCA-Style Bob Rassa

“I had been learning to drive with power steering. I turned the wheel to what I thought was enough and found myself going in a different direction going the opposite way.” “I was backing my car out of the driveway in the usual manner when I was struck by the other car in the same place it had been struck several times before.” [as usual] And among the new members reported this month was Ron Spangler, who owned a ’76 9334 RSR, a -78 930 Turbo and a ’78 911SC. [Ron lived in Forest Hill and was a Ferrari owner/dealer/trader as well as small plane dealer. He sadly just passed away a few months ago]

30 years ago in 1988 the presiding President was Bob Gutjahr, and as previously noted Bob moved

the meetings to the Country Fare Inn in Owings Mills, which had a bit more charm that Peerces. Reports on the Indianapolis 500 filled the PATTER, plus lots of upcoming events such as the Challenge No.20, a gimmick rallye, a Mother’s Day Autocross School (joint with Central Penn, in Harrisburg) and a July autocross at Towson State Teacher’s College [now Towson University] A summer picnic was also announced, joint with Central Penn Region, who would take turns with us as hosts on alternate years. [Maybe we should re-invigorate this CHS-CPA connection? Their President is Eric Brubaker, ebrubaker.35@gmail.com] The May Spring Drive & Dine was reported, and it was a success with 19 Porsches convening at the Penwick House Restaurant in Calvert Co. [Historian comments in brackets]

Cabrio Water Drain Safety Clogged Cabriolet Roof Drains and Damaged Interior and Electronics The following was brought to our attention by Ray Benedict. If you don’t mind, would you please include a technical notice in the June Patter that alerts everyone with a convertible (Boxster and 911) where the drains are prone to getting plugged. Ray told us his car is damaged as a result of the recent rain to the tune of $2K. Interior wet plus radio amp is fried. Failure to keep the roof drain points clean will result in damage. See the following: https://rennlist.com/forums/996-forum/542352-cabrio-water-drains.html https://rennlist.com/forums/996-forum/515457-water-in-my-cab-what-to-do.html http://www.porscheownersmanuals.com/2011-boxster/1/188-155/Convertible-top-Cleaning-water-drains-in -convertible-top-area

Tech Info Quickie—Removing Rusted Bolts Randy Richter I ran across this article and while I have not tried the acetone and ATF mixture, I am encouraged that it might be excellent for two reasons. First, they give high ratings to Kroil which I have personally concluded from use over the last ten years, that it is the best penetrating oil. Second, my Tech Chair mentor and esteemed mechanical engineer, Mr. Earlbeck, says the following, “I concur with the ATF/acetone home brew. It clearly works the best. Its viscosity and capillary action make it easier to work with.” I will say that if you have never used acetone (I use it a lot working with epoxy doing boat repair/construction) it does evaporate fairly rapidly. Therefore, if your storage container is open to the air, your percentage of acetone will diminish rapidly over time. Enjoy the original article below. Machinist's Workshop Magazine (March/April or May/June, 2007) actually tested penetrants for break out torque on rusted nuts. Significant results! They arranged a subjective test of all the popular penetrants with the control being the torque required to remove the nut from a "scientifically rusted" environment.

*Penetrating oil ..... Average load* None .......................... 516 pounds WD-40 ........................ 238 pounds PB Blaster ................... 214 pounds Liquid Wrench ............ 127 pounds Kano Kroil .................. 106 pounds ATF-Acetone mix ...........53 pounds The ATF-Acetone mix was a "home brew" mix of 50 - 50 automatic transmission fluid and acetone. Note the "home brew" was better than any commercial product in this one particular test. Our local machinist group mixed up a batch, and we all now use it with equally good results. Note also that "Liquid Wrench" is about as good as "Kroil" for about 20% of the price.

Chesapeake Region Scanner Tool for Diagnostics and Msg Resetting Rick Soloway With 13,000 miles on my 2016 Cayman S, the "Change Oil" message was popping up in my instrument cluster. It had been one year since my dealer had done an early inspection and oil change at my request, in preparation for a forthcoming trip to Amelia Island, Porsche Werks, Sebring 12 Hour, Disney World, Cape Canaveral, and Daytona Bike Week. So, it was now decision time: continue to take the car to the dealer for oil changes or commence the DIY route. Not being a fan of anyone "touching my stuff" and given the dealer pricing, I decided to go DIY.

sche Diagnostic Computer to check for codes and reset the oil change message. Perhaps not unreasonable a price but having this done at every oil change mitigates the savings of DIY. As usual for the internet, researching for the "right tool" reveals a lot of conflicting information. Ratings of various devices ranged from 5 (Perfect!!!) to 1 (Piece of junk-didn't work on my car at all!!!). Here's a distillation of what I found, which may or not be correct given all the internet "noise" and the fact that I was willing to spend only a small amount of time researching (as always, YMMV);

YouTube offers numerous videos of how to change the oil on a Cayman so there's no reason to discuss that here. The only thing I'll say as a safety pedant is that if you don't have a lift, then you need to have a floor jack and jack stands (I've seen a video where the car is left resting on stacks of 2 x 6s under the tires-not for me!!). You've got to have the car in a rock stable condition because given the low ride height of these things, an elevation accident won't end pretty. As an aside, everything you need for an oil change (oil, filter, filter housing O-ring, drain bolt washer) is available on Amazon. Afterwards, I saw that Walmart carries Mobil 1 (full synthetic) European Formula 0W-40 at a competitive price. Note that given the geometry of the oil filter location on a 2016 Cayman, you have to have the proper sized oil filter "socket" to remove the plastic oil filter housing. There's no room to use a clamping strap with a handle.

In researching on the internet and YouTube, it became clear that one needs to find a way to reset the "oil change" message after changing the oil. My local dealer wanted $149 to hook the car up to the Por-

22

You can get a very expensive professional grade device that works on multiple vehicles or a far cheaper device for the home DIYer that tends to be more limited in brand scope Devices that work on multiple vehicle brands may be unable to address certain modules or message functions on a specific vehicle Brand specific devices (e.g. Porsche oriented) may not be compatible with certain historical models (so, you need to verify that a device works with your specific model/year)

With my head spinning after one and a half hours of all this confusing and conflicting information/ opinions, I opted to purchase the Porsche specific iCarsoft POR-II Porsche OBD-II Scanner Tool Multi-systems ABS SRS. I got it off Amazon at the widely available price of $149 (ironically the exact price of the one-time visit to the dealer for a diagnostics check). The device showed up at my door two days later.

removes the update tool from the USB port, removes the SD card from the tool, and inserts the SD card into the scanner slot. Lastly, one connects the scanner to the computer via the USB cable and updates the scanner software. There are plenty of YouTube videos showing the process in detail. Finally, hooking the scanner up to the car’s OBD II port allows running the diagnostics and message resetting routines. My car had no diagnostic codes showing and I was easily able to reset the oil change message to 10,000 miles. Sorted!

The process for initial registering your unit and downloading the latest software is slightly "fiddly" as the Brits would say. Summarizing; you go to the icarsoft.us website, download the video explaining the process, download detailed instructions for the updating process applicable for your device and Porsche model/generation, and download the software updating tool to your computer. One then follows the instructions for registering the scanner and updating the software onto the SD card via inserting it into the USB update tool and then inserting the tool into your computer's USB port. Your computer has to be hooked up to the internet (obviously). One then

PCA-Chesapeake -- Concours School Announcement June 30th (Saturday) 2018, 10:00am to 1:00pm The PCA-Chesapeake Concours Committee is pleased to announce an upcoming session on Concours judging. If you’re interested in having your car judged at a Concours car show, or if you would like to be a judge, this is the school for you to attend - especially if you’re new to Concours. We hope you will be able to join us. Background -- A Concours is a car show, during which the cars are examined by a team of judges. The cars are typically displayed by category, and trophies are awarded to those with the highest scores. There are different levels or types of Concours. The classifications are designed to accommodate various levels of commitment, car usage, age, and originality. Beginners can enter their daily driver and learn a great deal about the history of that model and year, while making it gleam. For those who want to take it a more seriously there are categories in which the originality of the car is considered, and the judges examine nooks and crannies of the engine compartment and undercarriage. Our program for this session will include: • Introductions. • Facility Tour. • Concours presentation – What is it, types, categories, judging process, PCA-National rules, PCA-Chesapeake rules, preparation. • Opportunities to compete: • Chesapeake Challenge – September 15, 2018. • Local PCA shows. • Annual ‘Porsche Parade’ gatherings. • Cleaning, detailing, and preparation, tips, and product recommendations. • Concours judging – get some experience judging a few cars: • Street Class (exterior & interior only; more casual) • Concours Class (exterior, interior, engine compartment, chassis; more intense) • Wrap-up. Our host – This year’s session will be held at The Collectors Car Corral. The Corral was created and designed to provide an environment in which the automotive and motorcycle enthusiast has a safe and secure facility to store their vehicles. It’s a 25,000 square foot state-of-the-art-climate controlled and secure-access building. The Collectors Car Corral offers storage and detailing. Garage Crawl, Tour & Lunch

By Randy Richter

Saturday morning May 12th dawned clear and bright. It held high expectations for the participants that would by every measure be exceeded. The gathering place was Radcliffe Motorcar Company which very kindly opened their doors to us at 8:30AM with coffee and donuts. The owner and master technician Richard Garre graciously mingled with the participants and answered many questions. Among the cars in the shop were several Alfa’s, two Ferrari 330 GTC’s, a Ferrari Daytona, a Porsche 959, a replica Cobra and a number of other rarely seen cars. From Radcliffe it was off to the first garage. In order to respect the owners wishes we did not take photographs in his garage. It was clear that the owner had a love of vehicles and that he drove them actively. He mentioned using various vehicles on rallies’ in Israel, California and Colorado. The owner was clearly involved in racing and had spent numerous hours on the various tracks shown in the aerial photographs on the walls. His detailed discussion about the cars on display showed that he had clearly tested the dynamics of each vehicle in detail. He graciously explained the feel of driving each of the vehicles. My highlight of this garage was the beautiful BMW Z8 roadster, a car that for too long has been ignored and is now being rightly appreciated for its styling and performance. Also, on display were a wonderful blue 356 Outlaw with a 220hp four cylinder, a pair of modern Mercedes AMG roadsters, a Chrysler woody, a Boxster Spyder, a Mercedes 300SL and other automotive gems. After an enjoyable drive we reached the next garage. All of the pictures that you see in this article are from that garage. The owner explained his connection to various cars and some of the more unique features. Among them were two vintage BMW’s, the white one seen in the pictures was a one year only factory turbocharged car of very limited production. The owner’s car was rarer still, being one of ten with a sunroof. The owner told us the white BMW was one of his personal favorites. One of the rarer cars in the collection was a just delivered, new Ferrari 812 Superfast. The paint was special ordered and had grey green coloration, not your standard Ferrari Rosso Corsa, but oh wow, it just looked spectacular. The exterior was complimented by décor that showed the Italian flag colors, showing that much thought had been expended in ordering this car.

A number of Porsches including a Boxster Spyder, GT3 RS and a modern Targa was also on display. In addition, a stunning McLaren, and a Ford GT were on display. My favorite, however would be the 964 white Turbo with less than ten thousand miles on the odometer. The interior was a stunning light grey/white leather with special order blue piping. Truly a delight to view. Well time for the next drive to the third and final garage, which again to respect the owner’s privacy, we did not take photographs. When we arrived, the cars were displayed both outside and inside the garage. Outside were three McLarens including a P1. During our time at the garage the owner was kind enough to start on of the McLarens and we could enjoy the intoxicating sound of pure horsepower. Next to the McLarens was a Lexus LFA, again the owner was kind enough to start the car, which provided an interesting contrast to McLarens sharper, raspier exhaust note. The LFA growled deeply in anger letting everyone know it was a take no prisoners vehicle. Other vehicles on display were a Mustang R and Camaro ZL1. Several Porsches were available for viewing including a paint to sample Voodoo Blue Boxster Spyder. There was also a 996 Carrera 4S, that the owner discussed, saying it was his favorite driver. He explained that the car just fit him perfectly and the driving dynamics were absolutely fun in a regular on road driving experience. My highlight of this garage was the very rare Porsche Club Sport. This car was made from 1987-1989 as a light weight special, which tipped the scales at only 1160kg. There is no sure record of how many were produced but estimates are believed to be about two hundred. Making this car even more special was the fact the majority of them were Grand Prix White and this car was resplendent in it’s black shiny paint. The owner shared that finding this car had been a four-year journey and after viewing the car, one can truly appreciate why he expended all of the effort to find it. In summary, it is interesting to know that all three garages held Boxster Spyders. A beautiful day was made more wonderful seeing all of the wonderful cars and being welcomed by three very gracious and hospitable owners. 29

Garage Crawl, Tour & Lunch

By Randy Richter

I would be remiss if I did not compliment Aniano for all of his efforts to maximize the amount of people that could attend, by matching people in cars that had only one person or that had extra seats in their sedan or SUV. In addition, Aniano & Randy Moss put together pleasant scenic drives to each garage. They culminated this with a very enjoyable tour through lush country side to the Manor House Restaurant for a delicious lunch.

Garage Crawl, Tour & Lunch

By Aniano Arao

Baltimore County Garage Crawl Sells Out in 9 Minutes PCA Chesapeake’s garage crawls usually sell out quickly. The Baltimore County tour on May 12 reinforced that trend. Its roster was filled to capacity nine minutes after registration opened. In fact, only one spot (for 1 car and 2 people) remained available after the first 4 minutes. This event was primarily a Tech Committee undertaking, supported by the Tour & Rally Committee. About 26 hours after the April 22 start of registration, the waiting list was closed, when a total of 19 cars and 29 people got on it. A determination was made that it was unlikely there would be enough cancellations to accommodate more than 10 of those people. So letting the waiting list grow further would have been pointless. Thanks to the kindness of three PCA Chesapeake members, 61 PCA members in 32 cars visited three garages housing impressive car collections. We saw not only Porsches but also Ferraris, McLarens, Mercedes-Benzes, BMWs, Ford GTs and a Lexus LFA supercar. Among the most awesome cars were a McLaren P1 and a 2018 Ferrari 812 Superfast. After completing our visit to the third garage, more than half of the attendees left. Twenty-eight others joined a 39-mile driving tour to the Manor Tavern in Monkton, where we had lunch. Our thanks go to Jim Earlbeck and Randall Richter, co-chairs of the Tech Committee, for selecting and contacting the garage owners, as well as for coordinating the crawl with them. Our thanks also go to Randy Moss, my fellow Tour & Rally Committee co-chair, for forming and launching our caravan of cars.

MAY SOCIAL AT THE SEVERN INN

By Donna Brandt

MAY SOCIAL AT THE SEVERN INN, ANNAPOLIS A BIG SUCCESS!! Our May Social held on Wednesday, May 23, 2018 at the Severn Inn in Annapolis, overlooking the Severn River and the United States Naval Academy was attended by 30 people. We originally had room for 25 people and had started a wait list but were able to secure additional seating which cleared our wait list. In spite of traffic delays from the Blue Angels Practice, a great time was had by all with great food and even greater companionship!! Some of our attendees took advantage of the beautiful views before and after our dinner and enjoyed drinks on the outdoor decks. Thanks to everyone who came and helped to make another Chesapeake Region memory!!

GIMMICK RALLY!!

Story and Photos By Aniano Arao

42 PCA Members Compete in Gimmick Rally Howard County Event Draws 23 Porsches, 1 Ferrari, 1 Corvette Last year, Jim Kinnear offered us a ready-made gimmick rally that he had designed and organized in 2012 for a joint event of the Free State Corvette Club and PCA Potomac. Fellow co-chair Randy Moss and I tested the rally around midyear and liked it. Early this year, we tested it again and confirmed its place in our 17-event 2018 Tour & Rally Schedule. We ran the contest on May 26 in perfect sunny weather, with the threatened rain not arriving until evening. We called it the “Memorial Day Weekend Gimmick Rally.” It attracted 42 competitors in 21 Porsches, not only from Maryland but also from Virginia and West Virginia. Randy and I came in our own Porsches, while Jim brought his 2017 Corvette Z06 convertible. A friend of Randy’s came in a Ferrari 360 Modena coupe to observe. Altogether, 25 cars gathered in the ReMax Advantage Realty parking lot at 6021 University Blvd., Ellicott City, for the 10 AM launch of the Howard County rally. Jim and wife Diane served as the guest rally masters. As in most gimmick rallies, those participating in the Kinnears’ contest had four objectives: (1) Follow the route, as instructed; (2) take note of certain details along the way; (3) carry out certain tasks; and (4) answer some questions. On every page of the route instructions, there were spaces where notes and answers to questions could be written down. Jim described his rally as a contest of skills. “There are coursefollowing traps, where a team could go off course, answer a question wrong, and still get back on course because of a fail-safe loop – never knowing they had gone off course,” Jim said. “A good rally master never wants contestants to get lost.” Not even in the lovely areas the rally teams drove through. The rally’s finish line was at the parking lot of our lunch destination, Looney's Pub, 8180 Maple Lawn Blvd., Fulton. Jim and Diane collected and scored the answer sheets. After lunch, Jim announced the rally results. He said “27 would have been a perfect score. One team had a score of 20 and took first. Four teams had 19. The second and third places had to be determined using two tiebreakers. Then there were teams that had scores of 18, 17, 16 and 15. One team scored 14.” The top finishers were Mario Jorquera (driver) and Lisa Simonson (navigator), who came in first; Richard and Kris Townsend, who came in second; and Stephen and Cheryll Wenchel , who came in third. They were awarded beautiful glass trophies.
