President's Message PCA Open House As always, PCA Executive Director Vu Nguyen, and Chesapeake Region member, created a fun and festive time for all attendees. Vu raffled off some cool PCA merchandize and two sets of Michelin tires! A bountiful lunch was provided from Mission Barbeque was provided by PCA for all attendees.

Tours

Looking Back - September Events Treffen September 4th was the first day of PCA Treffen in beautiful Woodstock, Vermont. For four days we enjoyed the fellowship of approximately 500 hundred other PCA members, of which 16 were from the Chesapeake Region! Gifts were raffled off following each scheduled dinner and I recall Tom Morton and Steve Wood walked away with a raffle gift each. What a beautiful and picturesque state with some of the best and longest covered bridges in the country to visit. Home base was the fabulous Woodstock Resort and Inn which provided some of the best food I can recall. All of the Resort’s chefs were recognized and resoundingly thanked at the Saturday night dinner. We had beautiful mountain roads, soaring peaks, lush green fields and grazing cows and sheep for our constant viewing enjoyment. We all had a great time, so please register for a future Treffen event, as you will not be disappointed.

A Tour that was not missed by many was the Sunday, September 15 th Blackwater/Eastern Shore Tour, with Guest Tour Meister – Hank and Ellen Lucas. Members gathered at CPR Classic East, 9329 Ocean Gateway, Easton, MD 21601 and toured the historic Blackwater Wildlife Refuge. Following the Tour, members had a fine lunch at The Miles River Yacht Club. Our Tour Committee Chairs, Aniano Arao and Randy Moss, are constantly thinking about and creating unique and memorable tours throughout our mid-Atlantic region. So make sure you sign up for the October 13 th “Wings of Freedom” tour, as this is another “not to be missed” Tour.

Board of Directors Meeting The 5th Board of Directors Meeting of 2019 was held on Wednesday evening September 18th at the Collectors Car Corral, 12 Music Fair Road, Owings Mills, MD 21117. Autocross

Antique Automobile Club of America, Hershey (October 9th – 12th)

The Chesapeake Region partnered with the Aberdeen Proving Ground Community and returned to Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen, MD and held the charity autocross event for Fisher House. Fisher House is (https://www.fisherhouse.org/), “a home away from home” for families of patients receiving medical care at major military and VA medical centers. The homes are normally located within walking distance of the treatment facility or have transportation available. There are 84 Fisher Houses located on 25 military installations and 35 VA medical centers. Many more houses are under construction or in design. Families do not pay to stay at a Fisher House. Fisher Houses have full-time salaried managers, but depend on volunteers and voluntary support to enhance daily operations and program expansion.”

From their website: “The Eastern Division AACA National Fall Meet takes place each year during the 1st full week in October. The Hershey Region began hosting the show in 1955 and has done so each year since then. The meet is located in beautiful Hershey, PA on the grounds and parking lots surrounding Hersheypark and The Giant Center. Hershey is considered one of the largest antique automobile shows and flea markets in the United States. Events Include: Car Corral, Flea Market, Sat. Car Show, Ladies Luncheon, High Wheeler Contest, Race Car Condition Run, Judging School, AACA Juniors, Talent Show and Old Time Movie Night.” For additional information: http://hershey.aaca.com/ eastern-division-fall-meet/

Chesapeake Challenge 50 For over 40 years, Chesapeake Region has invited its members and friends to celebrate the annual Chesapeake Challenge – the oldest running multi-event weekend in PCA history. The Challenge became quickly popular among Mid Atlantic owners, and attendance grew to well over a hundred cars in the ensuing years. The Challenge has moved around Maryland throughout its history. From 1968-2008, the event was held as a three day event held from Friday over Saturday, with the autocross being held on Sunday morning.

This year the Chesapeake Challenge celebrates its 50th Anniversary and this year we celebrate our history. Our Chesapeake Challenge Chairs, Minta Miller and Joan Wood are working hard to bring back some Blasts from the Past! The Chesapeake Region invites all PCA members to attend the 50th Chesapeake Challenge, the oldest running PCA multi-event day.

The Chesapeake Challenge WEEKEND will begin on at Turf Valley Resort Friday night, October 4th, with a meet & greet titled Porsche Tales and Cocktails. We will welcome our VIP Guest of the weekend, Cam Ingram author and owner of Road Scholars. (This will have a SEPARATE registration). Saturday will be the main event of Concours, Picnic Lunch catered by Mission BBQ, Gimmick Rally, Tech Quiz, Cocktail hour, Awards dinner, and presentation by Cam Ingram. In a nod to the past, Sunday will have a “gimmick” autocross or gymkhana. This will NOT be a regular autocross but will be fun for all. We call it the 50/50 Shoot Out. It will be pay to play…for a small fee you will be able to play, the winner will win ½ of the pot, the other ½ will be donated to our charity Mercy NICU. This year we are going to the Valhalla, a private estate owned by Chesapeake member Skip Conrey, and Turf Valley Resort in Ellicott City, MD. The estate is situated on over 90 acres of beautiful horse farm providing an incredible backdrop for all the gorgeous Porsches in attendance.

Saturday will open with a Concours d’Elegance consisting of Touring (judging of interior, exterior, engine and storage) and Street-Prepared categories (interior and exterior). Classes for both categories will be based on entries. In addition to class awards, there will be awards for Best of Street Class and Best of Concours/ Touring Group. Both the Street and Touring Categories will be eligible for People’s Choice Award. 17

Chesapeake Region

Chesapeake Challenge 50 The Chesapeake Region will host a picnic lunch catered by Mission BBQ. The Chesapeake Region will provide picnic blankets but there is also some limited seating available in the barn. Shortly after lunch, a Gimmick Rally will leave from the estate leading you through the beautiful countryside and ending at the Turf Valley Resort. Upon arrival we will participate in a Tech quiz testing your Porsche knowledge…this is supposed to be a “fun” test, if there is such a thing. There will also be a Silent Auction benefitting Mercy NICU. Coinciding with the Tech Quiz will be the cocktail hour. The final events of the day are an Awards Dinner Buffet and presentation by our VIP Guest Cam Ingram. So come and join us for an event filled weekend of Porsches and People. All of your favorite cars and friends will be there, and so should you! YOUR REGISTRATION FEE OF $140 IS GOOD FOR 1 CAR, CONCOURS, GIMMICK RALLY, TECH QUIZ, LUNCH, AND DINNER FOR 2 PEOPLE.

Chesapeake Region Concours and Street Prepared Judging Overview Doug Ehmann, Ron Gordon, Donna Brandt Interested in participating in the car show at the next Chesapeake Challenge? This provides an overview of the process. We invite you to participate in this fun and challenging aspect of Porsche ownership and membership in the Club! A Concours d’Elegance is a French term denoting a gathering together of Automobiles in competition or judging of their respective merits in terms of Coach work design, finish, and appointments.

Here are the objectives for concours judging. Have fun! (Both participants and judges.) This is an enjoyable hobby for all of us. Maximize involvement. Increase the number of members who show their cars. Provide an opportunity for people and cars at different levels to compete.

The Basics At Chesapeake Region Concours events, we judge cleanliness, preparation, and condition. What Do Judges Look For? Before judging begins, every car is “perfect”. Judges look for imperfections and deduct points for those imperfections. Preparation: cleanliness, absence of scratches, dings and dents. A stone chip that was touched up will fare better than one which is not repaired.

Judging is “Hands On”. Expect to have your car engine probed (if Class-required), seats cushions parted, and the storage compartment checked for dirt and debris. PCA-Chesapeake Judging Groups

The Concours Group -- For Challenges, the Concours is judging limited to the exterior, interior, engine and engine compartment, storage area, and wheels. Note that Boxster/Cayman, 991, 992, and late model Cayenne, Macan, and Panamera vehicles will not have their engines judged, so owners do not need to remove engine covers prior to judging. The Street Prepared Group -- This is a more casual judged event. Only the exterior and interior are judged. People’s Choice -- All Concours and Street vehicles are automatically included in the People’s Choice competition. Participants and guests are encouraged to use a ballot to vote for their favorite car (one vote per person). The vehicle with the highest vote total, wins.

Honorary Judge Choice -- An honorary judge (typically representing our event sponsor) will select their favorite car, using any criteria they choose (Note: for CC50 this will be Porsche Silver Spring)Special Guest Choice – An honorary judge (typically the special guest speaker) who will select a car of their choice , using criteria they choose. Best of Show -- A ‘Best in Show’ car will be awarded for each category (Concours and Street). This is the car that has the highest raw score (no age points) across all classes in the group. Judging Classes – Cars will be judged with others of similar type and age. • • • • • •

356 914 Early 911/912 (1965 - 1973) Mid 911/912 (1974 – 1989) 964 ('89-'94) / 993 ('95-98) 996 ('99-'04) / 997 ('05-'12)

Chesapeake Region

Concours Judging (cont’d) Doug Ehmann, Ron Gordon, Donna Brandt Judging Criteria The judging criteria for the Challenge event are based on a combination of condition, cleanliness, and preparation. Cars that have been well maintained or restored, that are in good condition, and that are clean and tidy – will do well. Age points – To help level the playing field we award age points. For every year your Porsche is older that the newest in its class, it will receive a half point. For example, if you have a 1974 911, and someone has entered a 1989 911, you will receive 7.5 additional points (= 15 years difference x .5 pts per year). Judging Process

Prior to the event, judging teams are recruited for Street Prepared and Concours. Teams have a leader, who moves the team from car to car, and keeps time (5 minutes per car, once the team is ready).

Teams have one or two people for each area of the car to be judged. Exterior Interior Engine – for Concours Group judging, not Street Prepared. Storage – for Concours Group judging, not Street Prepared.

Judges record scores and comments. The Team Leader collects completed score cards. The Head Judge tabulates the scores. Awards are presented, typically at the evening banquet.

Preparing for Judging Clean, clean, clean! Too many novices focus 90% of their efforts on polishing and waxing, and the other 10% on whatever there’s time left to work on.

Spending too much time on the shiny areas and not enough in obscure places, for example, the pedal cluster. Applying too much dressing to seats and tires (if a judge runs a hand across the dashboard and it comes up greasy, oily, or messy, expect points to be deducted). Make sure your car looks it’s best as the judges walk up to it. Does your interior have an odor when the doors are opened? If so, Fabreze it.

Make sure that the carpet has been vacuumed, especially dark colors. Make sure there are no stains or dirt visible. What should, or should not, be in car when it is judged? Whatever came with the car from the factory should be in the car. This includes the Owner’s Manual, spare tire, tool kit, jack and air compressor (if factory supplied). PCA also allows transponders that are permanently attached to the car.

21

Chesapeake Region

Concours Judging Doug Ehmann, Ron Gordon, Donna Brandt Take out anything not supplied by the factory: Aftermarket mats, maps, tissues, loose change, radar detectors, CD’s, cell phones, etc. Prior to judging, you are asked to remove any front or mirror covers, after-market floor mats, seat covers, and items from the storage areas that didn’t come with the car when it was new. If the judge can’t see an item or its condition, the item will receive zero points. So a dented spoiler is worth more than one that is covered.

Sample Judging Sheets are attached. These are what the judges will use to evaluate your car. The Day of the Show Please plan on arriving between 7:00am and 8:30am. Once at the Concours and Street site, a member of our team will direct you to a parking space. We want to get you safely and quickly parked so that you can begin final preparations for judging. Final preparations are permitted until 9:00am, after which only light dusting is permitted.

Judging will commence at 9:00am. The judging team will have a maximum of five minutes to judge your car. The judges will require that your car be opened during the judging, so stay nearby. Convertible t ops and Targa tops need to be in the closed and locked position. When requested by the judge display your tools and spare tire if applicable. Please have your score sheets filled out and available to the judges to prevent undue delays. Remember that this is a competition, however the level of communication still needs to remain friendly. We are here to have FUN! (Participants and Judges.) Many of the people against whom you compete are your friends. Finally, be patient, determining the winner does take time.

Trophies – Here’s how trophies are awarded: Trophies for Concours and Street groups are awarded depending upon the number of cars competing in each group and class:

Special Trophies -- One each for ‘Best in Show’ for Concours and Street Groups, one for People’s Choice, and one for the vehicle selected by the Honorary Judges. We hope this has provided information you need to prepare your car for judging, and to give you an overall understanding of the judging process. Let us know if you have any questions. If you would like more information on PCA national and Parade Concours, see the PCA website for the Concours Competition Rules. Good luck, and thank you for bringing your car and participating in the Chesapeake Challenge.

Have fun! Doug Ehmann, Ron Gordon, Donna Brandt, and the judging team

Bucket List Trip

Dennis Howard

Things happen during life when you say I would like to do this or go there and you just can’t work it out to do. Forty seven years ago, two buddies and I had continuously talked about driving cross country after graduating from high school. But first you had to own a car - growing up in a middle class Baltimore City household meant no car was given to you for graduation - so we had to buy our own cars which meant going to work for the summer to pay for them before going off to college. So the trip never happened. After saving for 8 years, I bought my first Porsche – a 1968 911L, thus finally fulfilling my goal of owning a Porsche before I was 31 years old. I joined the Chesapeake Region of the Porsche Club and soon got hooked on Driver’s Ed which then led to participating in the Porsche Club Racing program. The early years in Drivers Ed meant doing all of the Potomac Region Drivers Ed events plus 3 or 4 other region events up and down the east coast. As the track count started to add up, so did the list of those tracks I really wanted to drive. After a few years of Club Racing I started helping out at Potomac’s Club Races so I wound up being in charge of the grid for about 10 years instead of racing. One day the possibility of forming a Vintage Group Class came up in a conversation after a Potomac Club Race weekend, helped no doubt by few beers. I decided to start competing again with my old SC in the Vintage Class VO. The Vintage Group events grew from one race the first year back in 2016 at my home track, Summit Point to now, 3 years later, 7 races this year, this including 2 of my bucket list tracks, Laguna Seca in July and Daytona in October. What the heck, all 3 kids have been through college, so no more tuition to pay, 2 out of 3 are now married and number 3 will be a few years off, and nobody’s pregnant. It’s now or never.

Discussions began on what each of us, my wife Terrie and I, would like to see as we traveled across the country and what friends we would like to visit. We decided that a southern route out along Route 40 and a middle route back using Route 70 worked out best. I budgeted 600 miles per day figuring if push came to shove it could be done in 4 days to Carmel California. I had signed up to do the test and tune on the Thursday before the 3 day club race, so I didn’t have to be there until Wednesday night. The first stop was our place near Charlestown, W.V. on Thursday night, to get away from the morning rush hour through Frederick. We got on the road at 7 am and then stopped in to visit friends near Knoxville Tennessee (Friday afternoon). Back on the road at 7 am again (Saturday) to head for Fort Smith Arkansas. I wanted to stop at some Route 66 points of interest so we visited a Route 66 museum, the Cadillac Ranch, and the WigWam Motel. Terrie’s wish list stops included the corner in Winslow, Arizona (from the Eagle’s song) and the Grand Canyon. Heading south from the Grand Canyon we stopped at a small gas station sitting all by itself, called Blackwell’s Corner in Lost Hills, California. Lo and behold it ended up being the last stop of James Dean - spooky if you think about it, here I was also driving to Salinas with a Porsche. We stopped at the intersection where the crash happened as

Bucket List Trip (cont’d) Dennis Howard well as a bit further up the road to the monument they erected there. Laguna Seca was all I had hoped it would be, although it was a lot more technical than I had thought it would be . I had a great time driving the track for 4 days as well as meeting some very nice people. Every evening we would sightsee then dined out, including a Mexican Restaurant that was so interesting I could have stayed another 2 hours just looking at all the signed pictures and automobile memorabilia. We also experienced Rocky Point Restaurant on Route 1 (Ocean Highway), Carmel’s Fisherman Wharf, and Clint Eastwood’s Mission Ranch Restaurant. Sunday afternoon after the final vintage race, I had handed out the trophies, we said our good byes and then headed to Las Vegas to see the sights. We slept in a little the next morning then headed to Zion Natural Park and Bryce Canyon. Then bright and early the next day we drove the rest of the way through Utah and stopped in to see John and Suzanne Cochran’s new house outside Colorado Springs and stayed two nights. They gave us the 50 cent tour of interesting spots near them which included the Broadmoor Resort where the 1966 Parade was held,

the Pikes Peak Museum and Manitou Cliff Dwellings. A drive up Pikes Pike was suggested but I had driven up it back in the late 90’s when we were in Colorado participated in the Steamboat Parade in 1998. Thursday morning we said our goodbyes and headed east. Trust me - Kansas sucks. Six hours of shear driving boredom. But one of the best things about a drive like this is that we had very few planned stops. Every now and then things appear that you didn’t know existed, like the Wizard of Oz Museum (OH MY!!) in nowhere Kansas, as a classic deja vu from our honeymoon tour of New England where we accidentally found the Tom Thumb museum, I hate to admit it but the behind the scenes stories were interesting. On Friday we drove through Illinois and Indiana and spent the night in Springfield, Ohio. The next day was Saturday morning so we headed on our short trip back home to Maryland. Only 6 more hours of driving! Two more Club races this year are planned, Road America and Summit Point and then another bucket list track to do and scratch off my list, Daytona!

Blackwater Refuge / Eastern Shore Tour Tour Attracts 47 People, 25 Cars PCA Chesapeake’s 2019 Tour & Rally Event No. 9 Many people who visit Maryland’s Eastern Shore often associate it with highways that tend to be straight, boring and congested with traffic. So our tour on Sept. 15th gave a good number of participants a pleasant surprise when we reached the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge. Not only were the roads there curvy and scenic, but they were also nearly empty – we had them practically to ourselves. All the participants said they enjoyed the drive.

For this delightful jaunt, we had our guest tour masters to thank – Hank and Ellen Lucas. The tour was their idea; they selected the roads, designed the route and chose our lunch destination in Saint Michaels. The positive feedback from everyone extended to our lunch and its venue – the Miles River Yacht Club, in which Hank and Ellen are members. We all had to select our main course and dessert ahead of time, and most chose the crab cake meal over the entrée-size chicken salad. A smaller majority picked Cookies & Cream over Orange Pineapple as their ice cream flavor. I am happy to report that everyone who expressed an opinion said that they found the food delicious, and that the service they received was very efficient, pleasant and quick. For the record, 52 people in 27 cars registered for the tour. On the day of the event, 47 people in 25 cars showed up. My fellow Tour & Rally Co-Chair Randy Moss and I divided the cars into three groups. Hank and Ellen led the first group, Myrna and I led the second group, James and Annabelle Beavan led the third group. Our thanks go to James and Annabelle. We particularly thank Bruce Wakefield, director of CPR Classic East. He provided not only the Easton parking lot where we could gather and launch the tour, he also kindly opened the doors of his business on a Sunday morning. He then offered coffee and pastries, as well as guided tours of his restoration shop, which specializes in vintage Porsches. We also thank Gary and Rebecca Blackford and Ron Farb for serving as group sweepers, as well as Gordon Ellis for helping with the distribution of the green ID tags during the signing of the waiver forms. Finally, we thank Ron Farb and Eve for submitting some of the photos they had taken during the tour. ++ +

HELLO! Say ‘Hello’ to your fellow Porsche Owners! Let’s revive the Porsche ‘Lichtspiele’ Greeting, with ’The Wave’ The next time you pass another Porsche driver, give them a friendly wave! Lichtspiele (literally translated, ‘light play’ in German) is an old sports car tradition. It was a fraternal gesture of respect between owners as they passed one another. It was cool to do, and it was quickly adopted by Porsche people. It became known here as ‘blinking’- flipping/flashing your lights to show you were part of the Porsche community. Back in the seventies and eighties, there was a lot of blinking. Not so much anymore. In Germany the Porsche Greeting (“Porsche- Gruß”) seems to have faded, too. In Germany and the U.S., the proliferation of Cayennes, Macans, and Panameras, in addition to 356s, 911s, 924/944s, 928s, Boxsters, and Caymans, makes driving a Porsche a less unique than when only 356’s and 911’s ruled the roads. Another factor is that it has become illegal to flash lights. I spoke to police officers and they confirmed that it is illegal in Maryland, too. Apparently flashing your lights could confuse people to think you’re an emergency responder, or you’re an aggressive driver, or could mean you're warning another driver about a police speed trap. In Germany as well, flashing high beams or lights - “Lichthupe” - is not allowed. The Wave – Some Porsche owners have used a friendly wave to acknowledge and greet their fellow drivers – a brief lift of the left hand. In Germany, it’s ‘freundliches winken’ (friendly wave). Other car clubs have adopted this, too, and with some clubs it’s rare that two drivers passing don’t do it. So let’s make sure this tradition doesn’t fade into the history books. We need a grass roots revival! The next time you pass another Porsche on the road, do the wave, or an occasional careful Lichtspiele. It will help increase the camaraderie among the faithful Porsche community. And it’s fun!

Doug Ehmann, Chair of the Sunshine Committee Thanks to those that provided input, and some nice Lichtspiele stories: Scott and Bettina Kirklighter (especially for Bettina’s German translation skills), Bob Gutjahr, Steve Graham, Michael Murphy, Laurie & Bruce Tarsia, Bob Rassa, Larry Robinson, Lee Raskin (who discussed this in his ‘Through the Rear View Mirror’ column in the December 1984 Porsche Patter), Scott Bernard, Jim Earlbeck, Aniano Arao, Ron Gordon, Donna Brandt, and Vu Nguyen.

This wave is a bit too enthusiastic, and not too safe

Electrolysis in Action Weird Science I will preface this article by saying I have not tried this, however it was written up in a very reliable publication, so I am assuming that it works.

Unlike the electrolysis which is your enemy and will eat your aluminum radiator, this controlled electrolysis may be your best friend in rust removal. All it takes is a big plastic tub of water, a sacrificial piece of steel/iron (anode) , a battery charger and water softner (sodium carbonate). Clean your rusty part or engine and dump it in the bath. The negative battery charger lead goes on the part to be cleaned and the positive battery charger lead on the sacrificial steel/ iron (do not use stainless steel as it releases poison into the water. Turn the charger on and let it soak. The electricity flowing theough the solution breaks the bonds of the iron and oxygen (rust) and the part gets clean while the anode gets rusty. This is a low current situation so the electric should not be problematic. However, do this outside because the breaking bonds release hydrogen gas, and you do not want to blow up your shop! Check the part regularly and swap out the anode as necessary. Thanks Science!

Garage Crawl—Sept 7th By Jim Earlbeck & Randy Richter

This article will by agreement with the garage owner be vague. We agreed not to disclose his name, location or publish pictures of his facility. Saturday morning dawned clear and bright for our garage crawl. After meeting at the predetermined location, we caravanned to the facility. When we entered the facility, the best reaction I heard from one of our members was they had “sensory overload”. While there were no Porsches, there were any number of magnificent automobiles. Most of the cars were very low mileage examples which are not driven. They are seemingly the owner’s “artwork” collection. The collection spans about 175 cars and boats that are absolutely the best of the best in a facility that is stunningly spotless. The owner regaled us with humorous stories and detailed information about all of the cars and boats in the collection. He truly is an example of the PCA’s tag line of It’s not just the cars, it’s the people. There were multiple Corvettes, some old some new, some hot rodded and some so original they defied description. The owner told us that only two Corvettes judged were ever awarded 100 points by the NCRS (National Corvette Restorers Society the undisputed Corvette authorities) and one of them was on display. There were numerous Dodge Vipers, multiple McLarens, a whole row of Lamborghinis, several Ferraris, and numerous tri-five Chevy hot rods. These included one that had received an award at SEMA and one that had made the great eight for the Ridler award. We were also treated to viewing numerous antique wooded runabouts from Hacker, Gar Wood and Chris Craft. He also had on display several Cigarette offshore race boats, including one in which he had won the world championship. Finally, the memorabilia were also a treat, with many autographed guitars from folks such as the Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. There were motorcycles, miniature and toy cars, famous driver’s autographs, rare automotive books and manuals. In short it was a morning of “sensory overload”, “oh my goodness”, “that’s amazing”, “just incredible” and “I have never seen that before”. Many thanks to the owner and his family for opening their amazing facility to PCA Chesapeake.

Public Service Announcements Maryland Real ID—New Drivers License Requirements If you haven’t already visited the MVA to secure a Real ID, the clock is running to meet a federal law.

“Please plan ahead,” said MVA administrator, Chrissy Nizer. “The deadline is October 2020 but we don’t want our customers to wait ’till then.” By 2020, older Maryland licenses will no longer exist. The new ones will look different but even if you have one now it won’t be a Real ID until conditions are met. “What that is, is four documents that you need to bring to your local MDOT MVA branch office,” said Nizer. “Those are proof of age and identity.” Meaning that, along with either a birth certificate or passport, you must also bring a social security card, a driver’s license, and proof of Maryland Residency, like a utility bill or a bank statement.

**AVOID I-895** MAJOR ROADWORK ON I-895 IN BALTIMORE The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) warned motorists today to avoid I-895 and the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel due to major construction and traffic impacts beginning this month. Two-way traffic will operate on I-895 for two years starting Nov. 27. Motorists should use I-695/Key Bridge and I-95/Fort McHenry Tunnel as alternate routes. The work is part of the MDTA’s $189 million I-895 Bridge Project, announced on Dec. 21, 2017, to replace the 60-year-old bridge north of the Harbor Tunnel. “To avoid sitting in traffic, motorists should plan on using I-695 or I-95 as alternate routes,” said Maryland Department of Transportation Secretary and MDTA Chairman Pete K. Rahn.

On Nov. 27, northbound I-895 will close completely for one year from the north side of the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel to the Boston/O’Donnell Street exit ramp (Exit 11).

• • • •

Two-way traffic – one lane in each direction – will operate on southbound I-895. The I-895/Holabird Avenue exit ramp (Exit 10) will close completely during this time. Additionally, the northbound bore of the Harbor Tunnel will close 24/7 for 60 days in spring 2019 with two way traffic operating in the southbound bore. Northbound I-895 and the Holabird Avenue exit ramp will reopen to traffic in spring 2020.
