Bob Rassa

A monthly feature depicting some highlights from past years, 50, 40, 30, 25 years ago

40 years ago (March 1980) found your writer as President [yes, again] who noted that the monthly meetings would move from the Holiday Inn to the Steak and Ale on Timonium Road, mainly because the Inn was starting to charge us $50 per meeting and that $600 a year could be better spent. [And in keeping with our “it’s closed” theme, the Steak and Ale closed a number of years ago but re-opened as a Basta Pasta about 2 years ago]. The Pres also reported a few things learned at the February Board of Director’s meeting – there will be a 924 Carrera; there will be a 928S for the US but without the hotter engine; there will be a “special edition” 911; the Porsche factory finally authorized the publication of 356 Service Bulletins in PANORAMA [never happened!]; PCA has 109 Regions with 15,176 active members; long-time Zone 2 rep Steve Chronister [of Central Pennsylvania Region] resigned due to business pressures and Rubye Woodhead was appointed in his place. Entertainment at the March meeting was planned to be a rally school by Bob Rassa and Moose Spencer. A small treatise on torque was presented in the March PATTER, with mention of torque bars for loosening stubborn lug nuts and torque wrenches [for making them stubbornly tight again, we presume]. A spring tech session for March 22 was planned at 40 West Porsche+Audi, coordinated by Dick Rochfort. Region membership was noted as 170 members, and new members Elliott Woods, Gail Wickens, Linda Frank, Jeff Price and Antonio Fredette were listed [Are any of you still around??]. 30 years ago, Dennis Howard was still President, and he allowed that at the February meeting he asked members what they wanted from the Region – but he didn’t elaborate on what he learned except to say that some members suggested a beer-and-pizza night instead of the monthly Region meeting. Your scribe here also reported on the continued debate over how to pronounce Porsche, and it was noted that several members of the Porsche family – who are personally known to this writer – pronounce it with two syllables, albeit the final syllable is a soft “e” as is usually found in German. And the “r” is also a soft “r”. So there. An article on changing your oil was written by Jack Young, and a couple highlights are 1) always use jack stands, 2) punch a hole in the old filter to allow oil to drain before loosening it and getting oil all over everything, 3) raise the headlights on a 924 or 944, and 5) use an oil catch basin. The Region was meeting at the Country are Inn [Yep – closed now]. A clever event, not specifically Porsche-related, was announced – a murder-mystery weekend event at the historic Atlantic Hotel in Berlin, MD. [And good show, THIS hotel is still open!] Donna Novak was the point of contact [Donna – how did it go?]. New members announced were Dave Gonzales, Paul Vogel, Deborah and Wayne Wilhelm, Dan Smith, Lawrence & Vicki Schoonmaker and Tom and Pam Eilenberg [Are any still around?]. Ralph Simmer’s ad in the back of the PATTER said, “I started working on Porsches when I could still afford one”.

President’s Message Vincent Rock Greetings Chesapeake Region!

February was a quick month, but there was plenty going on around the Region. Richter and Jim Earlbeck from our Tech committee were busy with two events. The first was on February 8 th held at Porsche of Towson to go over the all-new-all-electric Porsche Taycan, the newest challenger in the electric car market. The second Tech event of February was held at At Speed in Elkridge to hear Bob Miller’s insight on the Porsche investment market’s current state and what the future may have in store. This month also saw the annual Super Slot Car Night organized by Terrell Williams. These aren’t your average tiny H0 scale slot cars, they’re 1/32 scale (roughly the size of a soda can). It’s a great family event, and I highly recommend to attend if you haven’t done so before. March 18th is the second Chesapeake Region board meeting of 2020. Board meetings are open to all Chesapeake Region members, and we encourage everyone to show up to at least one meeting. The meetings are free to attend, but we just ask that you let us know that you will be attending by registering through MotorsportReg ahead of time. Please come out if you’re interested in getting involved in any of the committees, have any ideas, or just want to see how things work behind the scenes. If you ever have any questions, comments, or ideas for events, please feel free to email me at President@PCACHS.org or the Executive Board as a whole at Executive@PCACHS.org. We look forward to seeing you at our next event! Vincent

Chesapeake Region

“Inside the Taycan” Tech Event Earlbeck & Richter On Saturday February 8th, PCA Chesapeake was treated to a deep dive into the all new, all electric, Porsche Taycan. Those of you not familiar with this new vehicle may remember that the car was originally debuted as the Mission E. If you attended the PCA Parade in the Ozarks, you will remember Porsche treating PCA to the unveiling of the Mission E. Porsche Towson (PT) graciously welcomed about 45 PCA CHS members with hot coffee and delightfully fresh bagels with all of the toppings to open the event. Following some opening words and introductions by Jim Earlbeck (Tech Co-Chair); Steve Postol, General Manager of PT, and Matt Dagostino, Porsche Certified Brand Ambassador, enlightened us with many of the vehicle’s unseen features. Matt had been the chosen one from PT to attend the Porsche based training on the features of the car. We were told that PT had to establish a designated high voltage area in their shop and that their tech had received special training on handling the high voltage areas of the car. Keep in mind that the Taycan uses an 800-voltage architecture. That voltage is a safety concern. Regarding the high voltage aspect of the car, it was related that all the high voltage areas in the Taycan are designated with orange colored components. It was stressed that Porsche had focused this car, not merely on being electric, but on being a true Porsche performance vehicle. So, what makes it go and what are some of the features that differentiate it from other electric vehicles? Instead of the standard asynchronous motors the Porsche Taycan uses synchronous motors. How do they differ…. well the asynchronous motor is cost effective and can be heavily overloaded for a short period of time. However, it has low long-term load reproducibility and is large in weight and size. The synchronous motor provides good continuous power, has high reproducibility, has a higher power density (smaller for the same output) and is more efficient. The Taycan also has two transmissions, a single speed in the front and new to electric vehicles, a two-speed transmission in the rear. Taycan also has a much higher operating voltage (800) than other electric vehicles, this has the advantage of reducing current for the same power, reducing the wiring weight by about 48 pounds and enabling faster recharge rates. The Porsche can recharge to 85% of its capacity, which is the recommended standard charge for lithium ion batteries in order to maximize battery life, in approximately twenty minutes. The vehicle also uses pouch cells which are more energy dense and packaging friendly than cylindrical cells. Another advantage of a pouch cell is that they can be replaced one by one if they fail. The battery packs in some other EVs will require the replacement of the entire pack if it fails. So how do you charge the Taycan? It is recommended that a 240VAC outlet (NEMA 14-50R) be installed in your garage, this can be provided by Amazon Home Services with whom Porsche has partnered to provide this service. https://www.amazon.com/b?node=19763615011 On the road there currently 23,577 non-Tesla charging stations in the US and Canada. A mobile charger that uses 125VAC is provided with the vehicle. https://www.electrifyamerica.com/

12

Chesapeake Region

“Inside the Taycan” (cont’d) The first scheduled maintenance for the Taycan will be in two years and will include brake fluid flush/fill, brake system inspection, coolant inspection drain/fill and cabin air filter. Additional items that are unique to the Taycan are tires (All-Seasons with a combination of high vehicle weight, low rolling resistance and excellent grip), it cannot be used to jump start another vehicle and it cannot be flat towed (it can be loaded onto a flatbed at less than 4mph). Regarding the brakes, the Taycan uses regenerative braking that allows it harvest more than three times the energy of other electrics and it brings to party 10-piston caliper front brakes. So…. what is the bottom line with the level of performance that this brings to the Taycan? With launch control a 991.2 Turbo S runs 0-60mph in 2.8sec and the Taycan Turbo S does it in 2.6sec. After 2.5 seconds accelerating a 918 Spyder will have covered 84.9 feet and the Taycan Turbo S will have covered 91.8 feet. Clearly the Taycan performance will enthrall even the most diehard Porsche performance addict. Much appreciation and many thanks to Steve, Matt and the PT team for inviting us to a wonderful presentation on the new and revolutionary Taycan.

Slot Car Night 2020 Recap Terrell Williams Great weather, fast cars and pots of hot chili highlighted this year’s Super Slot Car Night - and it was a bonafide hit! A lighter than normal turnout didn’t put a damper on the races this year. Uncharacteristically “warm” winter weather likely factored into the light turnout at this year’s mid-February family classic as some decided to take their real Porsches out for a spin. And our condolences go out to Donna Brandt and the Schultz family as they laid to rest their loved one. Many Slot Car regulars attended the funeral and could not make it to Perry Hall. However, those who showed up brought their “Agame” and entertained us all with some fierce racing throughout the afternoon. It’s the Chesapeake PCA Regions 29th year of hosting our Super Slot Car Night. No other PCA regional club has a Slot Car Night that rivals ours and that’s something we should be proud of. The event was held at the Perry Hall Family Y Center this year because the Parkville Family Y was under construction and wasn’t available. The staff at the Perry Hall Y were very accommodating and enjoyed having our P-car crew crash their center. This year E-racers met the challenge of the Summit Point Circuit at the Summit Point Motorsport Park. Many thanks to our past Club President Michael Murphy and our fine Board for negating a conflict with the popular Tech Session and national PCA calendar. We had around a dozen first time racers and a total of 40 people in attendance. Of the 40 who attended, 36 people raced. After 30 minutes of warming up the cars and the track, and 15 minutes to chase out the electrical gremlins, the Juniors started the afternoons racing with youngsters from age 4 to 16 taking their turns at mastering the 4-lane slot car layout. Young Racers were especially eager after practicing on the second track layout in the rear of the activity room. Once again, Chesapeake Club guest Sean Ricketson, ably setup a wonderful track on the floor for all the youngsters who needed a little extra practice. The juniors competed in 4 brackets. All the Junior racers are winners and were awarded trophies, but the Juniors Champion for the 4 th year in a row was James Beavan IV with 2nd place going to Campbell Ruckman and 3rd place belonged to Rudy Willmar. The Women’s Racers filled 3 brackets of competitors who all raced very carefully. These weren’t the afternoons fastest races because the women proved to be very cautious drivers. Many fans pleaded for the women to “Go Faster”. Nevertheless, those ladies who balanced racing for speed, with caution around the sharp turns ended up in the championship race. The Women’s Race Champion was Stacy Talmadge and 2nd place went to Kara Martinez. Despite the low turnout, this year’s Men Racers filled out 4 brackets of competitors. The Men’s field of racers was a little thin this year totaling just

18

Chesapeake Region

Slot Car Night 2020 Recap (cont’d) 16 racers compared to 35 last year. The Slot Car Chair who is a two-time champion breezed through his bracket, but was shocked by the young upstart in the Championship round. The four finalists for the championship race included two veterans, and two first timers. When all the racing had concluded, 13-year-old James Beavan IV claimed the Men’s Championship title while Tom Morton claimed the 2nd place trophy. And yes, this is the same kid who won the Juniors Championship! The Juniors Enduro team race of 20 laps lacked heavy competition, but was ultimately dominated by the twoperson crew called Team PCA Chesapeake Region consisting of James Beavan IV and DeShea Wallace. Mason Hurwitz and Emilie Hawver of the Ocean Blue team came in second place followed by Ryan Hawver and Campbell Ruckman of Team RC. Team Vroom comprised of Lee Raskin, James Beavan III, Tom Morton and Ted Provenza completed 40 laps of racing to win the Adult Enduro race besting Team Le Mans, Team Great East and Team Basket Case for the coveted trophies. Perhaps the highlight of the afternoon for foodies was the Chesapeake PCA Chili cook-off that attracted 8 crock pots of tasty chili. The variety of chili was spectacular. The Slots Chair often found it difficult to find volunteer lap counters because the room was abuzz with chili connoisseurs. Participants gobbled, sampled and simply enjoyed a tremendous variety of chili making it very difficult to select the best. When the votes were tallied, the Chesapeake PCA Chili cook-off winners were Lee Raskin (Vroom Vroom Chili), second place went to Chuck Willmarth (Buffalo Chili) and third place went to Kara Martinez’s (Sausage Soup Chili). We had the wonderful support of the Perry Hall Family Y for hosting this year’s Super Slot Car Night. However, next year we plan on hosting the event at The Y in Arnold (Greater Annapolis) to possibly garner more participation. Many thanks to all those who attended and brought along family members to enjoy our great event. The James Beavan family dominated as the father son duo claimed 4 trophies. Slot Car first timer Shermoan Daiyaan was accompanied by his wife Tina and daughter Medina and a couple of Porsche slot cars they brought to the event. Unfortunately, they didn’t win a Slot Car trophy this year but vowed to come back stronger next year. After the trophy presentations, everyone quickly stepped up and helped break down the track, tables and chairs, gathered trash and cleaned the room. We can’t thank enough all those great PCA’ers. The Chesapeake PCA Region members continue to set the standard for social gatherings and enjoying club events. See you in 2021 at The Y in Arnold MD.

The Lighter Side

Does the Key for the EV Future Lie In the Past?

The PCA National magazine Panorama published a thought-provoking article last month written by Rob Sass, where he outlined the need for Porsche to produce an electric sports car at a lower price point than the Boxster--what he dubs the 914/E. In truth, he makes a compelling argument. With Porsches becoming less attainable by the year, an affordable P-car for younger enthusiasts is sorely needed. Could a retro-inspired EV be the future? Brands like Tesla have been driving the EV movement forward for years now with visions of a Jetson-esque future. The first round of mass-produced electric vehicles were oddly shaped futuristic people carriers. But a few years into the electric revolution and we are starting to see a shift in the type of electric vehicles on offer. Some manufacturers are trying a new angle; they believe the electric car pill will be easier to swallow if they add a spoonful of nostalgic sugar. Ford adopted the Mustang nomenclature and styling cues to the Mach-E and GM is doing the same with Hummer. One can’t help but wonder if the same formula could work for Porsche. It is a brand steeped in history, and the 914 nameplate is fairly adaptable. It was marketed from the beginning as the young person's Porsche. Given that the ‘young people’ of today desire electric, it would be fitting. Will the 914/E ever be made, or are we just blowing hot air? Well, definitely the latter, but hopefully the former is a possibility as well. You can read Rob’s article here, and see more of that incredibly gorgeous rendering!

Autocross 2020

Greg Hartke

It’s been an interesting chase, but I’m happy to announce that the 2020 AX schedule is now complete. There will be (as usual) 7 AX races this season, along with a Test and Tune event and, of course, the Introduction to Autocross (aka, AX School). The majority of the events will be held at Prince George’s Stadium (PGS, home of the Bowie Baysox) in Bowie, MD, with one (the Rumble at Ripken charity event benefitting The Fisher House) held at Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen, MD. Mark your calendars! The days and dates for the events are in the Table below and registration for some (if not all) of the events should be open at MotorsportReg.com by the time you read this. The constraints are numerous when trying to build the AX schedule: holidays, Potomac AX events, DE events, other Chesapeake PCA events, PCA national events, Bowie Baysox home games, and Ripken Stadium availability. It’s impossible to work around all of the constraints, but I did the best I could. You’ll note that there’s no event scheduled for July, which happened because it wasn’t possible to find a workable date that month, causing us to double up in June. We’re also doubled up in September because PGS management is booking no events for October since they expect to tear up the parking lot at that time for repaving. BTW, I tried to schedule events in March, but there were no workable dates for us that month. That turned out to be OK and I’m actually pleased to be starting in April because it’ll be a bit warmer than if we were starting in March. Besides… It’s easier for Brad and me to get things set up with the sun rising later in April than when we start in March. ;) In case you’re curious, I did indeed mention (strongly) to my PGS contact that getting rid of the channels currently in place that connect the central section to the lower section of the venue would really be a plus to all the clubs running AX events at PGS. This suggestion was passed along to management, but we won’t know if it was accepted until next season. We can hope. I’d say there’s a pretty fair chance they’ll get rid of them in the repaving, though, because those channels don’t really fill any useful purpose for PGS any longer. We’ll see!

First car off for T&T

Autocross 2020 (cont’d) The first event of the year is the Test and Tune (T&T, limited to 40 entrants, pre-registration only), which is an opportunity for experienced drivers to get out and knock the rust off their driving skills. An AX course will be set up (complete with timing) and drivers will be able to make as many runs as can be fit into the time available. In addition, we expect to have a few instructors on hand for those who are looking for advice to advance their driving skills. The T&T is an afternoon event with the approximate schedule to be: With a max of only 40 drivers, the pace should be quick and plenty of seat time should be available. I would encourage participants to take an instructor for a run or two at any time during the event to get another perspective on their driving. This event will be a great opportunity for those interested to come out and get ready for the upcoming season and should be a lot of fun. It certainly was fun last year! You can see from the schedule that close on the heels of the T&T will be our annual AX School. While the T&T is an opportunity for experienced drivers to get ready for the season, the AX School is for newcomers and inexperienced drivers who desire focused instruction on the basic skills of AX. I wrote about the AX School in last month’s column, so I won’t repeat that again this month, but the School is a great opportunity to come out and learn how to push your car to its limit in a safe setting. With an emphasis on driving, you’ll practice and learn how to execute important elements of the needed driving skills before actually taking those skills out on a full AX race course. Whether or not you actually decide to take up AX on a regular basis is immaterial. The AX School is still a wonderful learning opportunity and can open your eyes to a whole new world of excitement. Racing season is almost upon us and I for one am really looking forward to getting it cranked up! We’ll be racing before you know it and I’ll be looking forward to seeing everyone again when the new season begins. In the meantime, stay warm! Greg Hartke, CHS AX Co-chair

Public Service Announcements Maryland Real ID—New Drivers License Requirements If you haven’t already visited the MVA to secure a Real ID, the clock is running to meet a federal law. “Please plan ahead,” said MVA administrator, Chrissy Nizer. “The deadline is October 2020 but we don’t want our customers to wait ’till then.” By 2020, older Maryland licenses will no longer exist. The new ones will look different but even if you have one now it won’t be a Real ID until conditions are met. “What that is, is four documents that you need to bring to your local MDOT MVA branch office,” said Nizer. “Those are proof of age and identity.” Meaning that, along with either a birth certificate or passport, you must also bring a social security card, a driver’s license, and proof of Maryland Residency, like a utility bill or a bank statement. http://www.mva.maryland.gov/realid/index.htm

**AVOID I-895** MAJOR ROADWORK ON I-895 IN BALTIMORE The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) warned motorists today to avoid I-895 and the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel due to major construction and traffic impacts beginning this month. Two-way traffic will operate on I-895 for two years starting Nov. 27. Motorists should use I-695/Key Bridge and I-95/Fort McHenry Tunnel as alternate routes. The work is part of the MDTA’s $189 million I-895 Bridge Project, announced on Dec. 21, 2017, to replace the 60-year-old bridge north of the Harbor Tunnel. “To avoid sitting in traffic, motorists should plan on using I-695 or I-95 as alternate routes,” said Maryland Department of Transportation Secretary and MDTA Chairman Pete K. Rahn. On Nov. 27, northbound I-895 will close completely for one year from the north side of the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel to the Boston/O’Donnell Street exit ramp (Exit 11).

Two-way traffic – one lane in each direction – will operate on southbound I-895. The I-895/Holabird Avenue exit ramp (Exit 10) will close completely during this time. Additionally, the northbound bore of the Harbor Tunnel will close 24/7 for 60 days in spring 2019 with twoway traffic operating in the southbound bore. Northbound I-895 and the Holabird Avenue exit ramp will reopen to traffic in spring 2020.
