President’s Message

Greetings Chesapeake Region! I hope this message finds everyone and their families safe and healthy, and hope everyone was able to enjoy their Memorial Day weekend. Vincent Rock I’d like to thank everyone who has submitted material for newsletter articles. Our goal is to keep the Patter as a monthly publication, but with reduced events to report on, we need as much material as possible so please keep those stories/articles coming! The Patter team will be rolling out the articles in the coming editions of the Patter. With the current state of affairs, and the health and safety of our members as our top priority, we would like your help. If you have any creative ideas for events that are inline with the State and local ordinances, we would love to hear it. We are exploring virtual happy hours, self-guided tour or competitive scavenger hunts. We are trying to gauge interest in any of these types of events, so even letting us know if you would be interested in a virtual happy hour, tour or scavenger hunt would be helpful. If you ever have any questions, comments, or ideas for events, please feel free to email me at President@PCACHS.org or the Executive Board as a whole at Executive@PCACHS.org. Wishing everyone the best. - Vincent Rock, PCACHS President

Bob Rassa

A monthly feature depicting some highlights from past years, 50, 40, 30, 20, 10 years ago Covering both May and June of past years

May 40 years ago (May 1980) found this writer as President, and in the President’s column it was written to watch for the May PANORAMA as it would contain a road test of the new 924 Turbo, written by – again – this writer. [back in those days I did all Porsche road tests for PANO]. It was reported that a new member application from Laslo Szabo, a resident of Germany, was received as he was apparently moving to Maryland. Shortly thereafter, a nasty letter was received from Herr Szabo stating that he would never consider coming to the country of Maryland since he had been referred to as “swine Szabo” apparently due to a misaddressing of a welcome letter. We were meeting at the Steak and Ale on Timonium Rd, between I-93 and York Rd [that closed quite a while back, then re-opened as a 2nd Basta Pasta about 4 years ago– whether or not it reopens after the CoVid thing remains to be seen]. Chesapeake Challenge 13 was announced for the 3 rd week in July, and the Region was holding a TSD/Navigation Rally on May 18. 30 years ago (May 1990) saw D. Howard as president, and announced events were a Concours d’Elegance for May 12 in Rash Field, Baltimore Inner Harbor area, and a rally for May 20. Our Autocrosses were using Towson State College Lot 14 as well as Eastern High School’s parking lot. A cruise & dine was scheduled for June at Mear’s Great Oak Landing marina and resort on Fairlee Creek in Chestertown [and this is still there!]. The neat thing was that two members with boats were going to take the attendees from Middle River to Fairlee Creek, one would return that evening and the other the following morning since accommodations were available at the Martina/Resort. [Randy and Aniano – what a great idea!!]. 20 years ago (May 2000) saw Gene Fierro as President and we were meeting at the MD State Police Training Facility in Sykesville. Where we would tour the facility. A German car show was announced for late May at Towson Valley Motors, and an autocross school was scheduled for Howard Community College in Columbia. Planning of a novel event, the Midnight Autocross, was reported by then-Zone 2 rep Manny Alban. This would be in August at the Hunt Valley Mall [this precedes the Regal Theatres] and was noted as an annual event. A new PATTER advertiser showed up – GT Performance (Gennady Soykher) in Edgewood – specializing in American, German and Japanese vehicles. Another rally was announced for June, the “Rally in the Valley” starting at sponsor Towson Valley Motors’ new facility in Cockeysville [they used to be in Towson, ¼ mile north of the roundabout]. A report on the Hershey Swap Meet noted that comedian and PCA member Jerry Seinfeld was in attendance.

June 40 years ago (June 1980) Your writer reported on the 924 Turbo road test and lamented that many of the great back roads have sprouted houses as daisies, bringing people, cars, and pets to clog the roads, so we figured we just had to find even backer (?) roads to experiment with. The guest speaker for the June meeting at Steak and Ale was noted as Donald Pomerleau, Police Commissioner of Baltimore! [unfortunately, we cannot recall even a tidbit of what he told us]. A concours prep session was announced for Interstate Tire [formerly owned by Frank Salemi and now by Jerry Noll].

History Channel (cont’d) 30 years ago (June 1990) President Howard was still banging the gavel, and he was asking for a new Patter Editor since prior Editor Ben Cook had been at it for 4 years and was reaching burnout. Dennis asked for suggestions for a new meeting place, preferably a pizza joint [Dennis’ fave food??] and somewhere in the southeast of Baltimore. Results of the May Autocross at Towson State showed Chip Reichhart the top time by 2 seconds in his 69 911S [wait – Chip is also the autocross chair!?!] Member John Harvey reported on attending War Bonnet Region’s Tech Tactics event and deemed it spectacular. An annual “Wee Weissach” jointlysponsored autocross in Harrisburg, with Central Penn Region, was announced for the Farm Show parking lot in Harrisburg. [OK, why don’t we do this anymore?]. 20 years ago (June 2000) Gene still held the gavel and the meeting was to be at the Loch Raven Skeet & Trap Center where a cookout was being held. Results of the May Autocross school and the May Autocross were noted, and member Jim Condax reported on the Region’s May gathering at the MD State Police Driver Training Facility in Sykesvile. Apparently, the officials allowed the 30-odd CHS members to try out the driving simulators – and this was facilitated by our own Dan Dazzo who just happened to be an instructor at the facility [and Dan is still an active PCA member! Thanks Dan]. Member John Ballard was given the opportunity to drive a then-new 996 C4 on the track at Summit Point, and he liked it! Well, all except for the brakes that he felt were soft and tended to fade as compared to his own ’96 993. The annual crab feast was announced for August at Downs Memorial Park in Pasadena.

Member Name: Chuck Nolan Member Car: 2002 911 Cabriolet Meridian Metallic When it came time to buy a vehicle, what made you choose your Porsche and is this your first Porsche (if not please detail prior Porsche's)?: This is my first Porsche and I have always wanted a 911 cabriolet. What encouraged you to join the Porsche Club of America (were you a previous member?): Friends of mine have told me once you get your Porsche to join the club. There is a lot of resources available to Porsche owners. As a new member of PCA Chesapeake are there any particular events you are interested in participating in or would like more information on (we also take suggestions)? I was looking forward to the Porsche Swap Meet at Hershey, but that has been cancelled. Also, looking forward to Cars and Coffee at Hunt Valley and Annapolis. Have you attended a New Member party at one of our three local sponsoring dealerships (if not that should be on your list for 2020)? I have not attended a New Member party since the COVID19 closures. Anything additional you would like to share about yourself or your questions for the Chesapeake Region (volunteers also welcome): Looking forward to attending events put on by the Chesapeake Region.

Name: Steven K. Hack Current Car: 2019 Porsche Cayman S Guards Red Have you served on any Regional or National committees? No When it came time to buy a vehicle, what made you choose your Porsche and is this your first Porsche? I had been an Audi guy for years, always with a manual transmission. I stuck with Audi even after the company stopped offering a manual. I missed shifting gears so much, I traded an Audi S3 for a 2016 base Cayman 6MT. After attending a two-day sport driving school course at Barber Motorsports Park, I was ready for something with more power. I traded my 2016 Cayman for a 2019 Cayman S 6 MT. It is my second Porsche. What is your favorite PCA memory? 2019 Eastern Shore of Maryland Tour

New Member Profile: Rich Ehrlich Current Car: 2009 Porsche Cayman Base, 1993 Nissan Skyline GTS project, 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee Have you served on any Regional or National committees? Nope, never. When it came time to buy a vehicle, what made you choose your Porsche and is this your first Porsche? The Cayman is actually my first Porsche. When I was learning to drive, and was new licensed, my mother’s boyfriend at the time gave me driving lessons in his 1983 911SC. Needless to say, being 17 years old and not only encouraged, but taught how to drive that car properly was quite an experience. Well, not all that long ago, TV Chef Alton Brown was selling his personal 1983 911SC. It made me realize that I needed “toy” car as my Skyline has been non-running for basically a year. I looked at a lot of 911SCs, and I went to look at one at Tyson’s Corner. They also had the Cayman on the lot. When I put it all together, the Cayman was the perfect car for what I needed. Now it has the bonus that my kids love putting stuff in the frunk. What encouraged you to join the Porsche Club of America? Simple, the people. Vu was a massive help in my purchase. He pointed me to one car that I looked at, and he gave me so much information. Everyone else I have interacted with has been just as helpful and friendly. What is your favorite PCA memory? I don’t have one yet. I hope to start building a collection soon. If money were no object, what Porsche would you love to own and why? Oh…this is hard choice, do I go for an original 550 Spyder? A 718 GTR Coupe? Or a modern Cayman GT$? Anything additional you would like to share about yourself: I am very interested in the touring/rally events. I love to take a nice drive. I hope to do at least one or two HPDE classes when all this is done.

Chesapeake Region

New Member Profile: Scott Perschke Current Car: 2001 Porsche Boxster Viola Metallic & 1978 Porsche 928 White Have you served on any Regional or National committees? No When it came time to buy a vehicle, what made you choose your Porsche and is this your first Porsche? I've had a sports car for most of the last 20+ yrs. I started with a Datsun 2000 that I thought would give the true sports car experience but with Japanese reliability. It was my 10 yr project car, but after 11 yrs. I still had a ways to go so sold it and got a MR2 Spyder. Loved that cars' lightness until my son totaled it. At this point, a colleague suggested I try a Boxster and that the headroom would be good enough for my 6/2". I tried a STD 986 Boxster then an S and went for an S mostly for the sound. Then I lost my job, so sold it, and had to move out of town for a job for 3 years. When I got a job back in town I immediately started a search for an unusual color 986 Boxster, and my wife found a Boxster S in Viola metallic (1 of 12). It also has heated sports seats, HIDs, and a Sport Design interior. I got the IMS fixed and hope to proudly drive this car for many years. Once that was paid off, my mind returned to the object of desire since being a teen in the 70s, and I bought a 1978 928 that I'm trying to get road worthy this past winter and spring. It has just 72K miles but needed lots of those once or twice in a lifetime maintenance items addressed, like flexible fuel, oil, and PS lines, radiator, and to correct a few mistakes like too few gaskets in the CV joints (early 928s have 2 per joint, but only 1 per joint was there!). It is so well built, but I still haven't gotten used to bolts that are about twice as long as necessary! What encouraged you to join the Porsche Club of America (were you a previous member?): Joining the PCA was an obvious choice, I look forward to every Panorama and attending tours put on by the local chapter (I'm in both Central PA and Chesapeake chapters), and this would be my suggestion - that you consider 2 participating in chapters. They can have quite different vibes. What is your favorite PCA memory? My favorite PCA memory would be the special event at Towson Porsche when a pearl white 959 was in the showroom. My Boxster represented the 986 era. A good friend and his teenage son joined me for a while, and there were many fabulous Porsches there that day. Anything additional you would like to share about yourself or your questions for the Chesapeake Region (volunteers also welcome): My cost-is-no-object Porsche would be the Carrera GT. The sound it makes combined with an open top are specific attractions for me.

Chesapeake Region

Autocross Greg Hartke I’m sure the first question on everyone’s mind is when do we think we’ll start the AX season? And the answer is… BTHOOM. The BOD met last week and discussed the matter of events in general, agreeing to cancel all events through the end of July. That’s disappointing, of course, but also absolutely the correct decision and Brad, Meilyng, and I are in full support. Remember that our venue (Prince George’s Stadium, PGS) is in (duh…) Prince George’s County and they have some of the highest CoVID-19 infection rates in the state. As I’m writing this, I don’t think they’ve even begun to relax the restrictions on congregating, even at outdoor events, so we certainly shouldn’t expect them to be opening anytime soon. We do have the potential of another venue (Ripken Stadium), but again keep in mind that even so, we’re not going to be getting together to race until it’s decided that it’s safe to do so and that’s all there is to it. Think about the situation… Instructors needed in cars, congregating in the pits, keeping our tech workers safe, keeping the cone shaggers safe, worrying about how to handle registration, etc. And what about the workers in close proximity in the timing trailer? We’re a small operation and that makes it very hard for us to put in place proper safety precautions, then make sure everyone abides by them. Frank Tedeschi was kind enough to send me a link to the protocols put in place by the SCCA (https://www.scca.com/pages/solo-158802153121) for whenever they start racing again, and my immediate reaction was that they were exceptionally well thought out and would be very hard for us to duplicate. Check them out – interesting reading! Do you know anyone who has been struck by the novel corona virus? I’m sorry to say that I do. My (fraternal) twin brother came down with CoVID-19, but fortunately he had a mild case. He felt pretty miserable, but certainly got over it. He tells me that the oddest symptom was the complete loss of taste and smell beyond anything he’s ever experienced. Those senses haven’t fully returned yet, either. I also have a colleague at work who died from CoVID-19 (very, very sad) as well a couple of coworkers who were also afflicted with mild cases. The point is that this pandemic is very real to many of us, caution is absolutely warranted, and you can bet that we’ll have your safety firmly in mind if and when we can finally put on some AX events for you. Hey, you can use the time off to examine the new class structure put in place for AX this year, which by the time you read this should be up on the website. Make sure you check your car class before you enter this year because there have certainly been changes! I do have a little interesting news to relate from some of our racing buddies who have kept in touch. Brad’s car is ready to go and he’s been driving it as much as possible, though he did have to deal with a cracked injector this winter. He’s raring’ to go now, too! Marcus

14

Chesapeake Region

Autocross (cont’d) Frank is having his Cayman thoroughly upgraded and so will be changing classes this year. His car was getting a little long in the tooth, which means Marcus deserves a badge of honor for using the car as it was meant to be used – he drove it! Marcus has also been getting into iRacing, which means he’s getting a form of practice most of us will never see. He might be a demon out there this year (or at least whenever we finally race again). Go, Marcus! Meilyng also told me that Slava has been working on their 996, which now sports a new Tubi style exhaust and sway bar among the maintenance work he did (IMS bearing, clutch, AOS, etc., which I thought was quite impressive). She told me they’ll be up to P class when they finally race again. Jeeze, they were quick to start with and will now be even quicker. That should really be interesting to watch! BTW, if any of you have done some serious (or even not so serious) work on your car for this season and want to share the story, drop me a line and I’ll throw it out here. It’ll be fun to hear what our dedicated racers have been doing during the downtime. Uh…Hopefully you won’t have done some of the dumb things I’ve been wont to do. ;) The only thing I did that was even mildly interesting for this season was to buy a GoPro to record my races. I bought a suction mount to attach the camera to the inside of the windshield and I swear it took me half an hour to figure out how to put the camera on the mount so it would be in the proper position. Sheesh. A youngster probably would have had it figured out in like 2-minutes. They include no instructions with things these days and for the life of me I couldn’t see how the various bits and bobs they included could be configured to do what I needed. Crazy! I won’t say atypical, though. ;)

I certainly miss seeing all my AX friends again, but we’ll get back together eventually. All we can do is hope for the best. In the meantime, pay attention to the current health guidelines and stay well!

Porsche Pre-Purchase Inspections Tristan Hinkley

A Friendly Suggestion Buying a new-to-you Porsche? As I see it now, you have three choices in the preparation before buying: get a thorough pre-purchase inspection from a knowledgeable shop, budget a significant amount toward fixing possible issues as they arise, or drive and hope. I recommend the PPI. In late 2018 I bought a Porsche; in my case a 2002 911 C4 Cabriolet. I have purchased many used cars over the years from private sellers and thought I knew what I was doing. Internet research and talking to owners and mechanics led me to believe I knew the likely issues. The car was in California, but I had a PPI from an area shop and knew the answers to my questions: Yes, it appears original. No, there are no signs of accident damage. Yes, it is in good overall condition and in line with the low mileage. No, it does not appear to have a new clutch or IMS bearing. No odd noises. No evidence of burning oil. The cost of the vehicle plus shipping plus the eventual replacement of the IMS bearing and clutch and associated work was acceptable and still in line with current market value, so I made a calculated risk decision and purchased the car. The car arrived, and it was beautiful. It started instantly even though it had been on a truck for almost a week. Everything was exactly as it should be...until I went for a safety inspection. The MD inspection revealed cracked boots on both front axles. Why did the CA inspection miss that? Add $1200 to the cost, and a mild hint at what was to come.

I changed the oil every 6 months in order to look for any evidence of problems - drain the oil and collect a sample for analysis, inspect the filter, check the catch pan. Everything looked clean, and oil analysis came back looking good as well, with no additional metals present. In March of this year, the car started smoking for a few seconds at startup. This was a fun new twist! So I started reading. Maybe I overfilled the oil? Possible, but it had been months and over 1000 miles since the last oil change. Perhaps valves or rings? Maybe the cylinder walls are scoring? This last possibility was worrisome, so I did some more tests. No notable knocking or pinging, no oil residue in the tailpipe. Then, mysteriously, it stopped. No more burning oil. This mystery was too much. After speaking to experts and reading more than I could remember, I decided to have the cylinders scoped from the sump...and there it was. Scoring in cylinder 6. It still ran noiselessly and smoothly, but the problem was only going to get worse. Now I am looking at my options. Fixing the problem properly will be a $15,000 - $25,000 job. The car is essentially worth the value of its parts now, even though it still runs well. I had a PPI, but it was done by a random shop in the area, chosen by the seller. I knew some problem areas, but not all - at least one notable expert now suggests bore scoring may be the most common problem on M96 engines. My ignorance and excitement helped enable a truly epic failure. You already knew you should get a pre-purchase inspection before reading this. Perhaps you read Bob Miller’s article in the February Patter (“At Speed Porsche Services...Why are you doing it again?”) and his story of the 1973 RS that wasn’t. Perhaps you have had a problem that could have been found with a good PPI. The possibilities range heavily - a $1000 fix, or a $400,000 misidentification, or perhaps nothing at all. What is the risk worth to you? You are looking at a performance car, and even nearly perfect history and documentation can't tell the whole story. Talk to experts and learn the possibilities. Get a pre-purchase inspection from someone independent of the seller with recognizable expertise in the vehicle. Look for the common, the uncommon, and the expensive. Then, buy the car that you can truly feel comfortable with. Had I known at the time, bore scoping would have added $300 to the cost of my PPI, but it would have saved me tens of thousands down the road.

The majority of the board members were available for the call, led by Chesapeake President Vincent Rock. Of course the Covid-19 epidemic was the main topic and how it’s affecting the club today and going forward. The decision was made to cancel all club events through the end of July. For the time being the Crab Feast at the end of August shall remain on the calendar. The Covid-19 shut down has had a major effect on our sponsors and members in many ways including financially. With so much uncertainty it was decided to cancel the popular but also sponsorship heavy Chesapeake Challenge for fall 2020. The CC is among the clubs most difficult to plan and costly events that finding a location and committing to this for fall would be too risky for the club. The idea of a Virtual Challenge Online is under consideration. Our Vice President Aaron Miller is working on putting together an online member survey to be sent out in July. Membership chair Minta Miller shared her concerns with how the virus is affecting membership. We have been unable to have our normal new member dealership parties, which has stunted our growth temporarily. The hope is by fall we might be able to have one large new member party. Autocross chair Greg Hartke shared his concerns with getting the program back up and how the virus has affected him, which you can read in his article. Donna Brandt continues work on the 2021 After Holiday party planning, going forward as planned to once again take place at Turf Valley Resort around the 3rd week of January. One potential event that could be added to the events calendar is a night at Bengies Drive-In Movie Theater in Middle River MD. The club held this event in 2018 with some success and it allows for social distancing while still enjoying the company of fellow club members.

Porsche in the News Ridgely McKinless

Porsche ends factory involvement in the US sports car championship “Stuttgart. Porsche will cease its factory involvement with the 911 RSR in the GTLM class of the North American IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship (IWSC) at the end of 2020. The current season will not be affected. With this step, Porsche Motorsport makes a significant contribution to overcoming the economic effects that the Covid-19 pandemic has had on the sports car manufacturer. As the reigning champions in the GTLM manufacturers, team and drivers classification, Porsche currently ranks second in the championship with its American partner squad Core Autosport after the season-opening 24 Hours of Daytona. After taking an essential break for health safety reasons, the IMSA championship plans to resume its racing activities on the first weekend in July. The restart will be held at Daytona. Porsche Motorsport would like to bid farewell to the series by defending its title. The support of customer teams in the GTD class of the IWSC, as well as the Michelin Pilot Challenge (GT4) and the GT3 Cup Challenge USA, will continue unchanged in cooperation with Porsche Motorsport North America and Porsche Cars North America...“ Read the entire press release here (Source: Porsche.de)

Public Service Announcements Maryland Real ID—New Drivers License Requirements If you haven’t already visited the MVA to secure a Real ID, the clock is running to meet a federal law. “Please plan ahead,” said MVA administrator, Chrissy Nizer. “The deadline is October 2020 but we don’t want our customers to wait ’till then.” By 2020, older Maryland licenses will no longer exist. The new ones will look different but even if you have one now it won’t be a Real ID until conditions are met.

“What that is, is four documents that you need to bring to your local MDOT MVA branch office,” said Nizer. “Those are proof of age and identity.” Meaning that, along with either a birth certificate or passport, you must also bring a social security card, a driver’s license, and proof of Maryland Residency, like a utility bill or a bank statement. http://www.mva.maryland.gov/realid/index.htm

**AVOID I-895** MAJOR ROADWORK ON I-895 IN BALTIMORE The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) warned motorists today to avoid I-895 and the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel due to major construction and traffic impacts beginning this month. Two-way traffic will operate on I-895 for two years starting Nov. 27. Motorists should use I-695/Key Bridge and I-95/Fort McHenry Tunnel as alternate routes. The work is part of the MDTA’s $189 million I-895 Bridge Project, announced on Dec. 21, 2017, to replace the 60-year-old bridge north of the Harbor Tunnel. “To avoid sitting in traffic, motorists should plan on using I-695 or I-95 as alternate routes,” said Maryland Department of Transportation Secretary and MDTA Chairman Pete K. Rahn. On Nov. 27, northbound I-895 will close completely for one year from the north side of the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel to the Boston/O’Donnell Street exit ramp (Exit 11).

• • • •

Two-way traffic – one lane in each direction – will operate on southbound I-895. The I-895/Holabird Avenue exit ramp (Exit 10) will close completely during this time. Additionally, the northbound bore of the Harbor Tunnel will close 24/7 for 60 days in spring 2019 with twoway traffic operating in the southbound bore. Northbound I-895 and the Holabird Avenue exit ramp will reopen to traffic in spring 2020.
