Daniel Arsham takes the ‘Art Car’ to the next level

https://www.motor1.com/news/383012/porsche-911-eroded-art-car/

When you think of an art car, what comes to mind? Hand painted BMW racing cars? Or maybe Liberace’s over-the-top diamond studded Rolls Royce? Those are good choices, but I bet you didn’t think of a crystaleroded Porsche 992 from the year 3019. New York artist Daniel Arsham, in conjunction with Selfridge’s, has created the post-apocalyptic Porsche 911 from the future. Arsham is known for his ‘Future Relic’ series of eroded sculptural art work, but he recently took that series to the next level, using a brand new 992 Carrera as his medium. It may seem sacrilegious to cut up with a brand new Porsche, or any for that matter, but the results are stunning. It appears to be decomposing and revealing a crystal-laden inner core. Luckily, he had the backing of Porsche on this endeavour, so he didn’t have to shell out a hundred grand or more for a 992. In fact, the executives in Zuffenhausen offered him the car, and their engineering team helped him ‘deteriorate’ the car without impacting drivability. According to Porsche, “The 911 art car presents what it looked like when it was discovered in 3020. After thousands of years, although many parts of the car body were damaged by erosion, it was still able to drive with undiminished performance. This fits perfectly with the 911’s identity as a Timeless Machine, both for design and performance." They’re right, the Porsche 911 defies trends with its timeless design. But just how ‘timeless’ is this art car? Only the people of 3019 will be able to tell.

Arsham’s Second Porsche Art Car If you found that interesting, this week Daniel Arsham unveiled another art car that he made using a Porsche 930 donor vehicle. Happily, this time he didn’t destroy the bodywork. https://hypebeast.com/2020/9/daniel-arsham-porsche-930a-turbo-collaboration-info

President’s Message Vincent Rock Greetings Chesapeake Region! I hope this month’s edition of the Patter finds everyone and their loved ones in good health. On October 3 rd Doug Ehmann organized our No-Contact Drive-Through Concours event held at Jim Earlbeck’s Earlbeck Gases and Technologies. We would like to thank Doug and Jim for making the event possible. With the State of Maryland and the counties in our Region starting to loosen restrictions, we are eager to get back to having events again. Minta Miller, Doug Ehmann, and Aniano Arao are working on logistics of having a virtual Challenge event this year that aligns within the current State of Maryland and surrounding counties restrictions. Even though our annual Rumble at Ripken to raise money for Fisher House had been cancelled, the Region made a $500 donation to the Fisher House. The Fisher House provides housing for military ad veteran families can stay free of charge with a loved one receives treatment in the hospital. We are proud to be able to support Fisher House and you can learn more about Fisher House and donate by visiting their website at FisherHouse.org. For Pete’s Sake is another charity we support annually. For Pete’s Sake provides The After Holiday Party 50/50 raffle raised $400 for the charity, and Tom Divillo donated his winnings brining to total amount raised For Pete’s Sake of $800. For Pete’s Sake provides underserved families who are facing devastating cancer diagnosis to offer cost-free respite experiences. You can learn more about For Pete’s Sake and donate by visiting their website at TakeABreakFromCancer.org. Keep a look out in your email and on our Facebook page for how to participate. I hope that everyone and their loved ones are staying safe, and we look forward to resuming more regular activities. Non-PCA Porsche Drives in 2020 Aniano Arao In March, soon after the pandemic lockdown in Maryland was announced by the governor, his spokesman was asked on Twitter which activities were allowed under the state's guidelines. Among those deemed okay, he said, were recreational drives in the countryside, where there are likely to be no huge clusters of people or no people at all, and in cars that, ipso facto, physically distance the occupants from other people. However, in an abundance of caution, the Chesapeake Region of the Porsche Club of America decided to suspend all club activities in March in response to the COVID-19 pandemic emergency. With no official PCA driving events to organize and enjoy with fellow members in the spring and summer, and with the go-signal given to all of Maryland by the governor’s spokesman, I went ahead and continued to drive for fun on Maryland's wonderful back roads, with friends or by myself. Some friends came all the way from Pennsylvania and Virginia to join my private escapades. Who were these friends? Most of them were those who had reached out to me this year via e-mail, text messages or phone calls, asking if I was holding any group drives. A few others were those who had joined my private drives in 2019. Between January and Sept. 23rd, I hosted more than 24 fun drives for these friends, in addition to doing some by myself. I purposely kept the groups small, ranging from two to no more than 10 people, and two to seven cars. As Maryland started to relax the COVID restrictions and guidelines, I loosened the maximum number of people for each drive. So for the two “Safeway to the Bay” drives co-hosted and created by guest tour master Hank Lucas, we had 16 people in 10 cars on Aug. 23rd and 13 people in 9 cars on Sept. 13th. In all of the drives, we observed physical distancing and wore masks when appropriate. We complied with the COVID-19

14

Chesapeake Region

Non-PCA Porsche Drives (cont’d) prevention guidelines of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as well of the state of Maryland. To minimize the risks, I did not make meals in restaurants part of the drives. I held most of them in the afternoon, after lunch. Except for Hank’s 2-hour drives, all took no more than 90 minutes to complete, to preclude the need for a restroom break. But I did not ignore the calls of nature. All the drives started and ended in places where restrooms were available nearby. I made clear to all participants at the outset that my private fun drives were not PCA events. They were all aware that, in March, PCA Chesapeake had suspended all club activities.

Though some other PCA regions started to resume operations in July or August, the Maryland-based Chesapeake Region had not. But a decision was made in September to proceed cautiously with a few socially distanced and touch-free events in October, starting with the Chesapeake Challenge Concours, Tech Quiz and Gimmick Rally. Good luck to all! Stay safe. [Ed: See more photos on page 17]

Chesapeake Region

Member Profile: Ron Farb Member Names & Join Date: Ron Farb – joined 7/5/2016. Car(s): 2011 Porsche 911 Turbo S Cabriolet, 2019 Audi RS5 Sportback Have you served on any Regional or National committees: I have not been overly active in the Chesapeake committees but a few years ago I was a Patter co-editor. I had a good time with it and enjoyed writing “Ron’s Ramblings” where I truly rambled on about random car stuff. I think the highlight of my ramblings was my “The Cat in the Hat Drives a Porsche” poem. Check it out in the December 2018 Patter if you’ve never read it – I’m sure you’ll get a kick out of it if you ever had kids. What encouraged you to join the Porsche Club of America: Funny story about how I joined PCA. I bought my first Boxster in 2016 and then sometime later while checking out the Chesapeake Region PCA website I learned that they were about to do one of their drives that weekend. Therefore I just showed up at the meeting point but obviously the Tour Committee really couldn’t let me join the tour since I wasn’t a member. That really didn’t deter me so I just followed behind as a private driver. Once the tour reached the lunch destination, I went inside and asked the restaurant if I could pay them directly and of course they said yes. I then went and sat at one of the PCA tables, had a good time and joined later that week. When it came time to buy a vehicle, what made you choose your Porsche and is this your first Porsche (if not please detail prior Porsche's): Like I just said, I bought my first 2013 agate gray Boxster back in 2016 from POSS. It was a great first Porsche but a year or so later I traded it in for a 2013 agate gray Boxster S because at HPDE events at Summit Point I was able to catch up with people on the curves but didn’t have the power to pass them on the straights. Of course my insurance agent couldn’t understand why I traded in a gray ‘13 Boxster for a gray ‘13 Boxster. That car was also great but after a while I went and traded it in for a black 2011 Turbo S (from California) which I currently drive. I can’t imagine trading this car in any time soon since it looks good and has all the speed I could possibly ever need. I have added a Europipe exhaust to it and given it a custom tune from Softronics. I have taken it Summit Point HPDE track events, Chesapeake autocrosses, and to the dragstrip (11.5’s). But my favorite thing is just going for fun scenic drives in it with the top down. The first 7 years of its life the previous owners only put 13.5K miles on it. In the 2 years I have owned

18

Chesapeake Region

Member Profile: Ron Farb (cont’d) it, I have already driven it another 11.5K miles. What are your favorite Regional &/or National events: Certainly my favorite Regional event is the Crab Feast (bummer on not having it this year) – followed by all the great drives the Tour Committee puts together. I even helped them out last year and created/led the Omni Bedford Springs drive. My favorite National events are the Treffen’s of which I’ve been to the last three on the east coast. I just love to drive on back roads and that’s what these are all about in addition to the food and hanging with friends. What is your favorite PCA memory: I think my favorite “PCA” memories are the smaller informal destination drives I’ve done with many of my PCA buddies. The ones where you and a few friends just pick a nice weekend and go somewhere. Of these, places like Skyline Drive, Berkeley Springs, Charles Town, Chesapeake Beach, and Linganore Winecellars stand out. What advice about PCA or Chesapeake would you give to new members: My advice to new members – no matter what Porsche you have – just drive the dang thing and enjoy it! Also, maybe even just once if that’s all you are comfortable with, take it to a HPDE event and push both your and your car’s limits to see what you both can really do. Driving on back roads or even autocross is not the same level as driving on a road racing track.

Porsche Birthday Ride Lee Rock

We had an unusual request from Pam Hutchinson, who was planning a birthday celebration weekend for one her 4 sisters 60th Birthday party. Her one sister, Suzanne, had a dream to drive or be driven in a Porsche, and the sisters wanted to make that come to life. Suzanne would have rather owned a Porsche, but her wish was to drive or ride in one. The family would be in Selbyville, Delaware near Fenwick, in September, and was hoping someone could arrange a drive. Many of us are fortunate to own a Porsche, and while the majority of the population has never sat in or ridden in one, we sometimes take that for granted. In the spirt of sharing the experience, and making Suzanne’s wish come true, I decided to take Pam up on the request. I arranged to visit friends and family the weekend they were there, so I would be available. Minta kindly arranged for a PCA swag bag and hats for all, and when I arrived, the sisters were waiting. I took the Suzanne, the beaming birthday girl for a ride in my car, and she was very grateful her wish had come through. At the end when we returned, they sprinkled her with glitter, as that was a customary tradition. While visiting my cousin in Fenwick, I knew his 80 plus year old neighbor, Richard, had also never ridden in a Porsche, and when I offered, he jumped at the chance. I also had a swag bag and hat that

20

Chesapeake Region

Porsche Birthday Ride (cont’d) Minta planned ahead for him. He was literally like a like a kid in a candy store. Richard was so excited and thrilled be riding with the top down, he was smiling ear to ear. We took pictures of this as well, and he said this was one of the best surprises in his life. It felt good to bring some happiness in these challenging times. I think I got more enjoyment out of it than the either sisters

or Norman, and enjoyed the drive as well. So, next time you hop in your car, think of someone you know, who might like to ride along. Happy Motoring!

History Channel PCA-Style Bob Rassa A monthly feature depicting some highlights from past years, 50, 40, 30, 20, 10 years ago (For September 2020 PATTER) 40 years ago (September 1980) saw a report on the 25th Porsche Parade from the Region President (you know who!) held in Portland, Oregon. The weather was superb, ranging between 75-80 daytimes, 60-ish evenings with no humidity. One fun aspect was that Ed Peter, export sales manager at Porsche AG wanted to run the Parade rally with his wife, as did Dr. Ernst Fuhrmann, then head of Porsche AG with his wife. The problem was that they weren’t really rally-experienced, so your writer was tasked with following them in an Audi 4000 provided by Porsche of America Corp (POAC, predecessor of PCNA) to assist as they needed it. My navigator was Louise Stoddard, wife of then-PCA National President the late Chuck Stoddard, and I was delivering her to the end point of the rally, which was Timberlake Lodge on Mt. Hood. Chuck was running the rally with Mick Williams, 1970 Parade Chair (Sun Valley, Idaho) and a past National President. Mick’s wife Lois was a passenger in the Audi, as was former PCA National Treasurer and good friend Ashley Carroll – who attended a number of our Chesapeake Challenges. The most interesting part of the story is that Dr. Fuhrmann in a new 928, and Herr Peter in a new 911, drove the Oregon back roads like they were the German Autobahn, and there is no way a new 5-cylinder Audi 4000 with 4 passengers is going to keep up with a 928 and a 911 driven full-tilt, even though we did our darndest. If our German friends encountered a slower car, they simply went around – across double yellow lines, around curves, on the right shoulders – anywhere. Scared the living he** out of the two ladies and Ashley as I tried my best to keep up. It was also just over 40 years ago (August 1980) that Bob Schmitt married his charming wife Connie. Bob and Connie were super active for many years, and Bob was President for a stint. They moved to Florida to retire at least 15-20 years ago methinks. A fall tour of the eastern shore was planned, with dinner at Longfellow’s Restaurant [still open!!]. A clever trivia quiz was published [first one we ever remember] and a fall tech session at 40 West P+A was announced. 30 years ago (September 1990) found RS America Dennis Howard pounding the gavel at his restaurant of choice, Snyder’s Willow Grove Restaurant [sadly, it closed in January after 83 years]. Dennis also noted that this would be the last meeting there since we didn’t spend enough; apparently in August we were there for 4 hours and spent $200, while the restaurant needed $500 to allow us to continue. Chesapeake Challenge 22 was announced for Sept 4-5-16, at host hotel Sheraton Towson [this hotel was actually built by a high school classmate of mine, Larry Rachuba, who sadly passed away about 3 years ago]. The concours was planned for Goucher College almost right behind the hotel, with the autocross at Towson State University. Registration was $15 per car, plus $15 for each event entered. Saturday dinner was a whopping $27.00. Northern New Jersey Region invited us to attend the “Bosch Spark Plug Grand Prix” with them in September at Pennsylvania International Raceway, Nazareth, PA [home of Roger Penske]. The Region has a 4,000 ft.sq. suite at turn 4 [more a big tent we understand] which is just adjacent to the pit area. Potomac Region invited us to attend a new 356 event at Sky Meadows State Park, billed as a low-pressure Concours d’Elegance for 356 owners. [We wonder, did this graduate to the Gathering of the Faithful”?]. The annual crab feast, hosted at the Woodhead’s eastern shore place was announced. 20 years ago (September 2000) found a cover photo of Bruce and Laurie Tarsia, then the Region’s membership chairs, and their 356B coupe (named “Moldy”) and the PCA National Membership Growth Award that

22

Chesapeake Region

History Channel (cont’d) was presented at the 2000 Parade to the Chesapeake Region. Gene Fiero was still the gavel-holder and we were meeting [full membership meeting, not just board] at Peerce’s Plantation Restaurant near Loch Raven [again- now long closed after a couple revival attempts]. New members were reported as Robert Baruch, David Burrows, Michael & Sally Cooperman, Philip Collector, Russel Creel, Andrew & Gail Ennis, Alex Fowler, Sheldon Franklin, Michael & Bonnie Gafffney, Randy & Carole McMenamin, Gary Mullaney, Stanley Silver, Loretta and Frank Traglia, Anthony & Ann Kopacz, Don Stephens, Kelly Friedrich, and Steven Schuh [are any of you still around??]. The Chesapeake Challenge #31 was announced for October at Marriott’s Hunt Valley Inn, and for autocrosses we were using Tipton Airfield [private airfield just south of Ft. Meade on Rt. 32]. A Zone 2 autocross was announced, to be held in Hershey PA at the site of the planned 2005 Porsche Parade there. The Potomac Region Driver’s Ed event held in August at Summit Point was reported, with a bunch of CHS members attending, including Tom Joyce, Bill Gleason, Marty Pokrzywa, Chip Rosse’, Andrew Toth, Dan & Dennis Cignatta, Dirk Decker, Bob Miller, Jim Adleberg, Michael Vietz, Manny Alban, Paul & Danny Amico, Frank Starr, Lyn and Scott Eckels, Eric Rupert, Woody Smith, Bethann Garreau, Dan Fazekas, Gary and Betty Church, and of course Dennis Howard. Trophies were awarded for the time trial portion and 12 of them went to CHS members. The annual crab feast was still being held, but this time at Downs Memorial Park in Pasadena, and the 2000 edition, on the last Sunday in August, drew 130 hungry crab-eaters. The August Board meeting was reported, held at Rosse’ & Associates in Hunt Valley. The bank balance stood at $7,300, but no report on membership or other stats.

Public Service Announcements Maryland Real ID—New Drivers License Requirements If you haven’t already visited the MVA to secure a Real ID, the clock is running to meet a federal law. “Please plan ahead,” said MVA administrator, Chrissy Nizer. “The deadline is October 2020 but we don’t want our customers to wait ’till then.” By 2020, older Maryland licenses will no longer exist. The new ones will look different but even if you have one now it won’t be a Real ID until conditions are met.

“What that is, is four documents that you need to bring to your local MDOT MVA branch office,” said Nizer. “Those are proof of age and identity.” Meaning that, along with either a birth certificate or passport, you must also bring a social security card, a driver’s license, and proof of Maryland Residency, like a utility bill or a bank statement. http://www.mva.maryland.gov/realid/index.htm

**AVOID I-895** MAJOR ROADWORK ON I-895 IN BALTIMORE The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) warned motorists today to avoid I-895 and the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel due to major construction and traffic impacts beginning this month. Two-way traffic will operate on I-895 for two years starting Nov. 27. Motorists should use I-695/Key Bridge and I-95/Fort McHenry Tunnel as alternate routes. The work is part of the MDTA’s $189 million I-895 Bridge Project, announced on Dec. 21, 2017, to replace the 60-year-old bridge north of the Harbor Tunnel. “To avoid sitting in traffic, motorists should plan on using I-695 or I-95 as alternate routes,” said Maryland Department of Transportation Secretary and MDTA Chairman Pete K. Rahn. On Nov. 27, northbound I-895 will close completely for one year from the north side of the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel to the Boston/O’Donnell Street exit ramp (Exit 11).

Two-way traffic – one lane in each direction – will operate on southbound I-895. The I-895/Holabird Avenue exit ramp (Exit 10) will close completely during this time. Additionally, the northbound bore of the Harbor Tunnel will close 24/7 for 60 days in spring 2019 with twoway traffic operating in the southbound bore. Northbound I-895 and the Holabird Avenue exit ramp will reopen to traffic in spring 2020.
