Editors Message: Happy New Year! Welcome to 2024! I was expecting this issue to be much smaller, but at the last minute it busted out to 70 pages in length, quite the feat for a Winter issue. I was looking through my photos and realized I forgot something last month in the profile for John Bunch & Jennifer Shannahan…see photo to the right!_! If you were following our Social Media you saw how much fun we had on the Treffen at Sea and will see they have already announced the next one for July 2024 heading from Seattle to Alaska and back, sounds like a great adventure!

Have an article idea, member profile, for sale or business ad, shoot me an email editor@pcachs.org to get started. Happy Holidays, James B Beavan III For the latest events and news follow us! I’m always posting photos from our events on our socials that don’t make it in the Patter and there’s no delay to see what you missed or attended. Chesapeake Region

Presidents Message Hello and Happy New Year! As the incoming President of the amazing Chesapeake Region, I’d like to extend my warmest thanks and sincere appreciation to the leadership during the past two years. Ron Farb, Steve Wood, Andy Powell and Wayne Nelms led the Club through unprecedented and challenging COVID times, making difficult decisions and leaving us in great shape. Thank you for your service. I am very grateful for the confidence you have placed in me and Mark Miller, VP, Andy Powell, Treasurer and Ken Wilmers, Secretary. The Executive Council is very enthusiastic and looks forward to working with the Committee Leadership and all the volunteers to continue to provide our Members with first-class events. A special thank you for those bringing energy, time and great ideas to the Club…our Volunteers. We are continually looking for volunteers. We can always use you. Volunteer opportunities exist for every activity and every skill level. When good people get involved, good things happen. Volunteers are what make the Chesapeake Region great. Our first order of business will be to finalize the yearly budget and begin to populate the Calendar of Events. I am excited about the opportunity to work with you all to generate a full calendar of activities that offer all types of fun and excitement that appeal to a broad range of interests. I encourage all of you to check the website Calendar of Events often as new activities are planned and important dates from PCA National are posted, for example registration for Parade on January 31st. In the near term, we have the After Holiday Party (registration is closed) on January 13th where the absolute best Yankee Gift Swap will again bring out the finest in Bob and Manny. The Bring the Whole Family Slot Car Race and Chili Cookoff Competition will be on February 10 th. Registration is open. Don’t have a car, don’t worry, we will have one for you. Starting in February, our monthly Social Breakfasts will continue on the first Saturday and the monthly Social Dinners continue on the third Tuesday. These are great meet-and-greet opportunities for new members or long-time members looking to jump back in. Also, these are excellent opportunities for prospective volunteers to learn how they can join in the fun. Thank you to all of you for making Chesapeake Region so much fun! It is the cars that bring us together, but it is the people that make it special. Steve Buss

President, Chesapeake Region, Porsche Club of America

Socials In Review Marsha & Steve Buss

December Social Events – January 2024 Patter There was no Breakfast Social for the past few months. The interest waned so we paused the breakfasts for a while. Additionally we will be searching for a breakfast restaurant in the northern part of town to complement Eggcellence in Annapolis. The plan will be to alternate venues. In December, there was no Dinner Social due to the busy schedule of the holiday season. Upcoming events: The traditional After Holiday Party with its infamous Yankee Swap is scheduled for January 13th at The Turn House in Columbia, MD. The event is a sellout with a waiting list. If you made reservations on Motorsport Reg (MSR) and cannot attend, please go to MSR and cancel so others on the waitlist may join in the fun. The February Breakfast Social will be at Eggcellence in Annapolis on February 3rd at 8am. Registration will not close until Thursday night, February 2nd. Please register at www.Motorsportreg.com. The February Dinner Social will be at Victoria Gastro Pub in Columbia, Howard County. The menu items draw from both national and international cooking traditions and remain in harmony with the seasonal availability of high-quality ingredients. The dinner is capped at 30 members and registration is now open. Thanks to Rich and Kathy Erlich for suggesting this great restaurant. Family Slot Cars and Chili Cook-off is on Saturday afternoon, February 10 – please come and join us at this fun event. It will be at a new location in Anne Arundel County – just off I-97 in Millersville. We are thankful for your participation and for all the volunteers who helped with the many social events organized in 2023. Happy New Year! Treffen At Sea 2023 By: Steve Buss

December 9 – 16, 2023 Princess Cruises is the Official Cruise Vacation Planner for the Porsche Club of America. Eight hundred PCA members set sail for the Western Caribbean destinations – Belize City, Roatan, Costa Maya and Cozumel on December 9th. PCA members received special VIP treatment throughout the cruise including seminars, group dinners, special excursions, and activities. As we left port, the ship’s horn blasted out the theme from “The Love Boat”. Bon Voyage! The first evening, Pirelli sponsored a welcome social. Day 2 was an at-sea day and following the success of the first cruise in December 2022, the morning offered two seminars. The first was an open mic session with Nathan Merz answering and commenting on member’s questions. The second seminar was hosted by Ramsey Potts and he provided a Porsche market update. Day 2 was also the registration for the Diecast Concours at Sea, sponsored by Pirelli. Over 125 members brought their 1:18 diecast cars for the show. To check out the show, Google “Porsche Diecast Concours” and you will see Facebook and Instagram presentations. The grand prize winner received an all expenses paid cruise for two to wherever Princess cruises. There was a PCA Formal Dinner preceded by a champagne waterfall happy hour. Day 3 was spent in Belize City and that evening there was a Caribbean Nights deck party. Day 4 was spent in Roatan, Honduras and that evening there was Movies Under The Stars: Racing with Giants and Painting with Kelly Telfer seminar. Day 5 was spent in Costa Maya, Mexico and that evening there was a 1980’s Fashion Show and Dance Party. Day 6 was spent in Cozumel, Mexico and that evening there was a “Read My Lips” song competition cocktail social followed by the formal PCA Group Dinner. Day 7 was spent at sea and there were three seminars in the morning. 1) Planning your Porsche’s Future presented by Lee Giannone 2) From Outlaw to Rennsport – The Emory Story presented by Rod Emory 3) Q+A with the Guest Speakers. In the afternoon there was Porsche Painting with Kelly Telfer where many of us had fun painting our Porsches with the Sky Princess cruise ship in the background. The last evening ended with a Farewell Cocktail and Ugly Sweater Send Off.

Family Event: Slot Car Racing & Chili Cookoff: 2/10/24 By: Marsha Buss

Family Event: Slot Car Racing and Chili Cookoff: February 10th Super Slot Car Racing 2024 promises to be more exciting than ever. One of our Region’s winter family traditions will be held this year in a new location. A fixture on our winter calendar for over 30 years, this family event is scheduled to take place on Saturday afternoon from noon - 3 PM, February 10th in Shilpley’s Choice, Millersville, Anne Arundel County. And there is a bonus! The famous Chili Cook-off is not to be missed and will be some of the tastiest chili you’ve ever had. Perhaps greater bragging rights will go to the winner of our Chili Cook-off. Bring a pot of your best chili and taste the competition’s for a grand tasting event. There will also be a great kid’s practice track setup to keep everyone entertained and warmed up for the big races. Volunteers are needed for the most fun packed family event during the winter season. We need help in setting up the track, tables, chairs, breakdown and cleaning up after our event. Please let me know if you're available at 11am on Saturday, February 10th to assist. To volunteer just simply show up at 11am. All participants must register for the event on www.MotorsportReg.com by Friday, February 2nd.

Names of the Chili cook off winners are announced and racing trophies are awarded before 3pm REGISTRATION Log onto your Motorsportreg account or create one at www.MotorsportReg.com. Registration is open and will close at midnight on February 2nd. There is a registration fee for this event. OTHER INFORMATION Slot Car Racing for Beginners Members are encouraged to purchase an Analog or Digital 1/32 scale Porsche slot car(s). Digital slot cars cost around 30% more and have the ability to be programmed and change lanes on more sophisticated, digital race sets. Our club race set is an Analog track. A variety of Slot cars are best found for purchase on-line at Ebay, Amazon and other hobby websites. Local hobby shops do not offer the same selection. New slot cars are encouraged as used slot cars may be broken and not operable. There are many brands of slot cars (Carrera, Scalextric, Fly, Ninco etc.), however, we find the Carrera and Scalextric brands run best on our club track. Prices range from around $20 to well over $100. Porsche model slot cars are highly encouraged; however, other models may be raced but are not eligible to win trophies. There will be loaner slot cars available for racing for those unable to bring their own. Member Profile: Leslie and Mark Flanagan By: James B Beavan III

Member Names & Join Date: Mark and Leslie Flanagan. We joined in April 2022. Current Cars, Previous Cars: 2008 Porsche Boxster RS 60 and 1990 Porsche 964 Carrera 2 Convertible. Have you served on any Regional or National committees: No, not yet. But give us time. What encouraged you to join the Porsche Club of America: Deciding to buy a Porsche, I needed to learn about the multitude of cars and what to look for in each model. PCA provided not only a great wealth of information prior to buying a car but also key resources for maintaining our cars. When it came time to buy a vehicle, what made you choose your Porsche and is this your first Porsche (if not please detail prior Porsche's): We love cars and have collected some fun classic cars, but never a Porsche until 2 years ago when we saw the Boxster. What are your favorite Regional &/or National events: After buying the Boxster, we’ve done Autocross. It is the best way to get to know your car. What is your favorite PCA memory: Taking the Boxster to an HODE event at Summit Point and driving on a race track. That was so much fun.

Flanagan (cont’d)

What advice about PCA or Chesapeake would you give to new members: join, drive your , have fun. Go to as many events as you can. You will meet incredible people to share your knowledge and passion for Porsches. If money was no object, what Porsche would you love to own and why: Because we like vintage cars, I would love to drive a 356.

Anything additional you would like to share about yourself (Family/Work/Etc): We are both retired and live on a small farm with our horses, dogs, and cars. Besides the two Porsches we also have a variety of classic cars ranging from a 1947 MG TC, 1959 Plymouth Sport Fury, a1964 Corvette, 1968 Chevy El Camino, 1970 Pontiac GTO, 1972 Datsun 240Z, 1991 Nissan Figaro, and a 1994 Rover Mini Cooper.

Autocross Year End Wrap-Up By: Greg Hartke Happy New Year to all! I hope you had a great holiday and that 2024 is everything you hope it would be! Even though it‘s the off-season, it‘s been hopping here at Autocross Central. There’s always plenty to do, planning for the next season and getting equipment problems straightened out. First things first, though. The final results for the 2023 season Class championships were compiled as soon as the season was ended. There are 15 awards for 2023 to be given out for various 1 st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners in Classes with sufficient standing to warrant awards. (The number of awards for a given Class is determined by how many eligible entrants there were in the Class for the season.) Many of these awards were presented to the winners at the Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon on Saturday Nov 11 th at Kelsey’s Irish Pub in Ellicott City. The remaining awards will be given to the winners when I see them at an AX race early in the 2024 season. The 2023 award winners are shown in the accompanying table.

The 2023 racing season went very well. Attendance was the best I’ve ever seen, so thanks to everyone for supporting us. We had a user-friendly schedule in 2023 with AX starting in April (which has more moderate weather than March) and ending in early October (which I like because it can get mighty cold in late October). In addition, we had great event spacing throughout the season. It’s hard to get through 9 events (AX School, Test & Tune, plus 7 races) without some rain, but 2023 was OK in that regard. We lost the second heat of the AX School to lightning and drenching rain (I was very disappointed for the students!) and it rained for AX#7. Other than that, the weather really cooperated for us and (somehow or other) we actually avoided blistering heat during the summer. I’ll take that!

Autocross (cont’d) In contrast, the 2024 AX season is not exactly getting off to an auspicious start. I started working on the 2024 schedule back in November. Keep in mind that the event spacing is largely dictated by the Bowie Baysox and Aberdeen Ironbirds Minor League Baseball schedules and it was immediately obvious that the schedule wasn’t going to be as nice as last year. Oh, well. You can’t have everything. I worked up a first draft and sent it off to management at Prince George’s Stadium to see what they had for me with the intention of contacting the Ironbirds as soon as I heard from PGS. As expected, I had to fiddle some dates because of events at PGS, but at first glance it didn’t look too bad.

The next step was to contact the Ironbirds about using Ripken Stadium, but when I checked with them, I discovered that every available Saturday was already booked. Wow! Didn’t have that problem last year – I was able to get a date easily and right when I needed it. Hmm. They still had a Sunday available and though the date wasn’t ideal, I thought I could make it work. Just about then, I heard from the Potomac PCA and their AX schedule had one notable conflict with mine in late July. I checked to see if they had any wiggle room, but that event happened to be the AX associated with PorscheFest at Summit Point, so it couldn’t be moved. Just my luck. OK, I reworked things to fit, then went back to PGS to see what they could do, while also telling Aberdeen that I would get back to them on that available Sunday date. Since then, I’ve heard nothing from PGS, despite emailing them several times. In the end, I tried to call the Director with whom I negotiate the schedule, but she was out of the office on an extended break ’til Jan 2nd. Grrr! Betcha dupa I’ll be on the horn as soon as she’s back to see what’s going on. While all this scheduling mess was transpiring, I’ve also been looking into the equipment failures that we had at the end of the 2023 season. AX#7 (the last of the season) was contested in the rain and during the race, the timing display died and showed absolutely nothing no matter what we did to try to bring it back to life. Sheesh! That’s two years in a row that happened, but at least this time it happened at the very end of the season. That was inconvenient, but not a disaster because competitors could check their times via WiFi, connecting to a timing application running on the AX PC in the trailer. In a true Murphy’s Law moment, though, the router went down, which meant that avenue for checking results was no longer available. Fortu-

nately, it went down when there were only 8 or 10 runs remaining, so it wasn’t a disaster. Since I was going to have to troubleshoot the timing gear, after AX#7 I had to load everything necessary (display, cabling, sensors, console, etc.) into Marilyn’s Subaru Forester to take home, besides the usual stuff I needed to service over the winter (backpack blower, generator, etc., plus all the battery powered equipment). Everything fit, but it was close. Good thing Marilyn was there! She’s the de facto “soccer mom” for CHS AX – I don’t know what I’d do without her. ‘Course, that’s true in other ways, too. ;) First item of business was the display. I cabled everything up at home and, sure enough, the display was showing nothing. I examined connectors, fiddled with DIP switches, tried all kinds of things, but nothing seemed to help. I left it cabled up and powered up while I went off to read the manual again for any hints and when I came back and retested, it looked to me as if it was starting to dimly display times. Huh! To make a long story short, the longer I left it powered up (testing intermittently), the brighter the displayed numbers became until eventually they were at full brightness and then they stayed there. Why? BTHOOM. ;) Clearly, whatever the problem might have been, it was caused by components getting wet. I’ve had it. That’s not happening again. I did a little planning and designing and now have a system to shield everything (including the display) from the rain. Hopefully 2023 was the last time we’ll have the display go down in the rain! The next item was the router. I didn’t bring that home with me from AX#7, but Co-chair Mark Hubley and I had what I’ve been calling an oil change party for our Caymans at his house (very exciting!) and I picked it up then. The good news is that the router now works fine. I cabled it up to the AX PC (via ethernet) and had no trouble accessing it from the PC. There’s simply nothing wrong with it, which is not entirely a surprise because it’s a simple unit and we’re not taxing it in any particular way. I discussed the router with AX Team member Phong Nguyen (I wasn’t in the trailer when it happened – Phong was) and he’s as mystified as I am about why it went down. Did the wet conditions cause a short? Was it inadvertently powered down? That’s actually a possibility. It was only when I dismounted it and examined it at home that I discovered where the power switch is on the console. That sounds unbelievable after all

36

Chesapeake Region

Autocross (cont’d) these years, but I didn’t build it and the console could not be viewed at all where the router was mounted in the trailer and the existing documentation (such as it is) indicated the switch was in a different place than it really is. As you can imagine, I’ve already affixed readily-visible labels for the console switches to the router so that nothing like this will happen again. I also created a document detailing the switch locations as well as the IP address and username/password for the router. The new documentation also includes a screenshot of the router dashboard (accessed via ethernet from the PC), which shows the SSIDs and security keys for the Wi-Fi. Now I only have to take the unit back down to Mark’s farm, remount it, and re-cable it. So as it turned out, the router was no real problem, despite my initial worry. About that oil change party… For those of you that have never changed the oil yourself in a model 981 Cayman or Boxster, it’s a pretty straightforward task when you have a nice two-post lift in your garage, as Mark does. Besides changing the oil, we also changed the engine air filters and cabin air filters. For two cars, it took maybe 5 hours start to finish for all this since it takes quite a while (maybe an hour) to fully drain the oil and the air filters are a PITA to access. My air filters were filthy, so I was glad to get those babies changed. I should add that internet videos were very helpful in figuring out how to access and remove the air filters. So that’s about it for where we are with prep for the 2024 AX season at this point. I still have more equipment work to do (putting together all the rain protection I have planned), but at least everything is working. I fully expect to have a schedule finished this month and when I do, I’ll put everything up on Motorsportreg as well as making sure it’s all up-to-date on the Club calendar. Has everyone ordered their tires for the upcoming racing season? I haven’t, but at least there doesn’t seem to be an availability problem yet. As I did last year (after I replaced my 20” Sport Techno rims with 19” forged rims), I’ll be going with the Bridgestone RE-71RS’s. The Bridgestones and the Yokohama ADVAN A052’s are now considered to be the top tires for AX for those of us not driving specialty cars like the GT3 or Turbo. I should order ‘em up soon. Don’t want those babies to go out of stock while I dally! ;) Stay warm! Greg Hartke CHS PCA AX Chair

Jan Heylen

By: Pedro Bonilla,

I was honored to have been asked by the Kart4Kids Committee to write a piece highlighting Jan Haylen's career and accomplishments to be published in their 2022 official K4K Program. I was so impressed with Jan's accomplishments that I though I would share with other Porsche enthusiasts and that's why we're publishing it here too. A few weeks before the K4K event, I called him, got his voicemail and left a message for him to call me back at his convenience. Little did I know that he was in the middle of his honeymoon! Congratulations! Sorry for the intrusion. The next day Jan was very gracious to return the call and we had a very nice conversation where I asked many questions, mostly about his career and his early karting life. “I started racing karts at 10 years old, a little late” said Jan, when I inquired about his introduction into motorsports. A friend of mine had a home-made kart which he would share with me. Sometime later he was able to obtain a real (used) kart which we also shared and that helped me a lot”. About his beginnings he commented that his father and the rest of the family was very supportive of his racing even though no one in his family had been involved with racing before. About a year after his friend purchased a real kart, Jan was able to get his own. “It was used”, he said, “but that was it for me. Every spare moment that I had from that moment on was for racing”. At 15 Jan signed his first professional contract and was able to race against and for the biggest Karting Factory Teams in Europe. “My early background is a bit different than most other young drivers. Everyone wanted to jump into a Formula Ford as soon as they could, but I stayed in karts until I was 20 years old”. One of those that had left early had been Jan's teammate, Jenson Button. I asked Jan if this had been in his native Belgium and he said that initially, yes, but as he got more and more involved, he was racing throughout all of Europe where 80% of the races were being held.

I commented how we had had similar early racing careers. He asked what I meant and I told him that I had started racing on a home-built kart as well at the age of 7. My Dad had helped me get a used pro kart and that took me from team to team, staying very active till I was 20. But then I realized that God had a sense of humor. “What do you mean”, he said. I told him that God had put Ayrton Senna in my brain but then he gave me a 6' 1” body which carried over 100 pounds more than the rest of my competitors so I had no chance. He laughed out loud, so I guess he agreed. And what about after karting, I inquired. “In 2000 I jumped into Formula Ford”, said Jan, “slowly because I had a limited budget. I then moved to England, made connections and I ended up racing for a small private team. In 2001 I was the first British Formula Ford Champion to win with a small private team and that gave me the push. A short time later I got a contract with the Mercedes Benz Junior Program AMG/Formula 3”. By the end of 2005 Jan decided to move to the US to do Indy (Champ Car at the time) for 2006 and 2007 where he raced with several teams: Dale Coyne Racing and Conquest Racing. “There was an opportunity for me to do more in open wheel racing, but when the two Series merged, GT was the way to go for me. I have no regrets”. In 2008 he began his North American sports car racing career where he participated in multiple sport car series racing different brands of cars as well. In 2009 Jan signed on to do the Firestone Indy Lights but ended up not racing. In the 2010 Indy Lights season opener in St Pete, he finished second and in 2011 he drove in the 24 Hours of Daytona and made six starts in the European FIA GT3 championship. From 2014 to today, Jan has been immersed in GT cars, mostly Porsches and from 2017 he's been most actively racing with Wright Motorsports. 2021 was Jan's banner year. He won the Michelin Pilot Sport Challenge Driver's and Team Cham-

pionship. Teaming up with Patrick Long and Trent Hindman for the four endurance races of the WeatherTech Sports Car Championship, they finished second in class at the 12 Hours of Sebring in the number 16 Porsche 911 GT3R and took a fifth place at Petit Le Mans, earning the 2021 Michelin Endurance Cup. For the rest of the season Jan raced the number 20 Porsche 911 GT3R with Fred Poordad, finishing in the top five for all thirteen races. They earned the Driver's Championship Title and Wright Motorsports the Team Championship Title. The nine championship titles won by Jan in 2021 earned him the prestigious Porsche Cup Award, since 1970, an annual honor given to the most successful private (non-factory) Porsche driver. The cup came accompanied with a brand new Porsche as well. Congrats! At the end of the year, Wright Motorsports announced that Jan would run another full season (2022) alongside Ryan Hardwick, racing the number 16 Porsche 911 GT3R in the IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship. They started the new season very well indeed. On January 20th 2022, the Wright Motorsports number 16 Porsche 911 GT3R driven by Jan Heylen, Ryan Hardwick, Richard Lietz and Zacharie Robichon were in 1st place with 370 points in the GTD Drivers Championship standings. During our interview, I asked Jan if he could point out one particular special win during his career that stood out in his mind. He told me that every win had been special in its own way and he couldn't point to one in particular, but in the same breath he also said that because of his long-time friendship with Patrick Long, winning their Class at the 12 Hours of Sebring with Patrick as a co-driver had been very special for him. He also said: “Winning the Rolex 24 and the Michelin Pilot Challenge

While this month's sell-through rate was once again below average at 68%, total dollar volume reached a higher than average sum of over $40m thanks to a number of highend cars coming to market, including two Carrera GTs, a 959, and 918 Spyder. We also saw the lowest sale of the year with a 1980 924 project car fetching $500.

While that bottom of the market sale is impressively low, our top sale, a 2005 Carrera GT finished in GT Silver Metallic over an Ascot Brown interior showing just 601 miles was equally impressive at a final bid of $1,781,420, a price we haven’t seen since the summer of 2022. Earlier in the month a Fayence Yellow over Dark Grey 2005 Carrera GT sold for $1,400,000 with just under 9,000 miles on the clock. Other million-dollar sales included a rare 2019 935 at $1,626,000, a 1988 959 Komfort that brought $1,600,000, a $1,450,000 918 Spyder with Weissach Package, and a 1994 911 Turbo S 3.6 that just cracked the $1m mark at $1,075,000.

Certain GT cars were also impressive this month with a 4,000-mile Guards Red 2011 911 GT2 RS bringing a top-of-the-market price of $705,000. This was a very strong sale against a $480,000 average for 997.2 GT2 RS’. Also on the GT2 front was a 2003 911 GT2 that brought a solid number at $192,000 and a pair of 2018 GT2 RS’ that brought $278,000 and $350,750.

992 GT3s continued their slide this month with winged cars selling at an average price of $231,000 and a top sale of $260,000 for a 6-speed example finished in Paint to Sample Gulf Blue. 6speed Tourings were a little stronger with two cars selling for $255,000 and $279,000 as they distance themselves further from the $300k mark. We also saw one more GT3 RS Weissach car come to market but it failed to sell at a final bid of $380,000.

356s were a mixed bag with our top sale being a 1965 356 SC Sunroof Coupe selling for $160,000, a good clip above the $123,000 average we’ve seen over the last twelve months. We also saw strong results for 356 Cs with two examples selling north of $120,000 propping the later 356

market up after a few disappointing sales and no-sales. One notable no sale for the month was a 1958 356 A Speedster that failed to sell at a final bid of $293,000, which wasn’t far off from other transactions we’ve seen lately.

On the normal 911 front, SCs and Carrera 3.2s had a hard time selling as only half the cars offered found homes in November with modified versions of both generations taking top honors. 964s continued their climb with a number of coupes above the $100k mark and a sell-through rate of 75%. Your standard 993, 996, and 997s on the other hand were fairly flat all around, whether Coupe, Cabriolet, or a 4 or S.

As we head into the final month of the year, it looks like the overall market has steadied after a bit of a softening. However, with big sales from RM Sotheby’s of The White Collection, and cars offered during NYC’s Luxury Week, we expect some impressive results as a number of cars offered are prime collector examples of the best of what Porsche has produced.

After Holiday Party 2024 Sponsored by Porsche Annapolis Come celebrate the end of 2023 and welcome in 2024! Join us at the Turn House on Saturday January 13th for our annual After Holiday Party, followed by the highly anticipated Yankee Swap conducted by “The Bob and Manny Show,” with your hosts, Bob Gutjahr and Manny Alban! The Chesapeake Region has established a reputation for the finest and fiercest Yankee Swap in PCA, one that has been copied by other regions, but never quite duplicated. A “Gift Exchange” is merely a mild description of the feeding frenzy that takes hold at this triple steal event. Chesapeake Region, despite being below the Mason Dixon Line, puts the “Yankee” into Yankee Swap…. The good stuff is coveted, hoarded and only grudgingly given up under duress.

This event regularly sells out quickly-so, register early!

2023 Tours: Looking Back

By: Aniano Arao

PCA Chesapeake’s Tour & Rally Committee planned 17 events last year. But one event had to be canceled because of inclement weather, another had to be postponed for the same reason, and a third had to be dropped to make room for a rescheduled 54th Chesapeake Challenge. So we actually held 14 events last year, though we numbered them up to 15 to avoid confusion. The Delmarva Tour, shown in the photo above, was the first one. The April 15th drive was conceived, planned and led by yours truly. This morning and afternoon event took us on some of the most enjoyable back roads on the Delmarva Peninsula. A total of 45 people in 26 cars took part. We started from the Premium Outlets in Queenstown, MD, had lunch at the Clubhouse at Baywood in Millsboro, DE, and then about a third of the attendees proceeded to Chincoteague, VA, for an afternoon ice cream and some sightseeing.

60

Chesapeake Region

2023 Tours (cont’d) Next on the schedule was the Drive to the Porsche Swap Meet in Carlisle, PA, on April 29th. But this annual drive that was to have been led by Rich Ehrlich, my fellow tour co-chair, was canceled because of bad weather.

I usually try to organize a workshop on tour planning and rally participation every year. In 2023, we held a Tour and TSD Rally School on May 6th. Rich and I handled the tour portion in the morning, while club historian Bob Rassa took care of the TSD rally portion in the afternoon. The classroom session was followed by an introductory TSD rally that gave Bob’s eight students a chance to put into practice what they had learned from him. The rally was won in their white 981 Cayman by Steve and Marsha Buss, second and third from right in the photo above. The event was attended by 11 people in 8 cars. Skip Conrey of Conrey Construction kindly hosted us at his lovely Valhalla Farm in Marriottsville, MD. Our lunch was at the nearby Facci Ristorante in Ellicott City.

The month of May also saw PCA Chesapeake members enjoying the ever popular Safeway to the Bay Tour of guest tour master Hank Lucas. This May 20th event started from an Annapolis shopping center and provided participants a delightful drive on many scenic back roads in Anne Arundel and Calvert counties. A total of 60 people in 32 cars showed up for this afternoon event, most of whom are shown in the photo above.

While the first three events of the year were chaired by yours truly, the next two were overseen by Rich. First came the June 4th Linganore Winecellars Tour, designed and led by guest tour master and PCA Chesapeake President Ron Farb. This popular event attracted 62 people in 35 cars. The tour started from Ellicott City, proceeded on wonderful back roads (shown in the photo above) and concluded with a picnic lunch at the winery in Frederick County.

Next came the June 25th Ice Cream Tour & Charity Drive designed and led by guest tour master Steve Graham. Starting from Sparks, MD, 58 participants drove in 29 cars on wonderful back roads to Keyes Creamery in Churchville, MD, shown in the photo above. The attendees of this afternoon event donated food stuff and other essential items to the Lindaben Foundation, a nonprofit organization led by PCA members Anna and James Beavan III. This event was a joint effort of the Tour & Rally Committee, represented by Rich, and by the Community Service Committee, chaired by Daniel McNally.

PCA Chesapeake’s summer of 2023 continued as a time not only for more fun but also for another charity undertaking. The Sinai Children’s Hospital and Oregon Ridge Tour on July 9th drew 50

63

2023 Tours (cont’d) attendees in 29 cars to Porsche Hunt Valley, the main sponsor of the event. General Manager Steve Postol treated everyone to coffee and bagels. From PHV, the attendees proceeded to the Herman and Walter Samuelson Children’s Hospital at Sinai in Baltimore, where PCA Chesapeake President Ron Farb formally presented to the hospital staff a check for $11,010 and a mountain of toys donated by the attendees and other club members. Some PCA Chesapeake members went directly to Sinai in three more Porsches, raising the total to 32.

After the turnover ceremony, 48 attendees in 26 cars joined the one-hour driving tour that I designed and organized, which took us to Oregon Ridge Park in Cockeysville, MD. A few more Chesapeake members went directly to Oregon Ridge. Our picnic lunch there was catered by Mission BBQ. Daniel McNally, as the Community Service chair, tallied the votes in the People’s Choice Concours. The Best in Show Award went to Jessie Sanchez for his GT Silver 2019 911 Targa 4S. The People’s Choice Award went to Mark and Dawn Miller for their customized Arctic Silver 2009 Cayman (which, in stock form, used to belong to me). The Exceptional Color Award went to club Treasurer Andy Powell, for his burgundy 2023 Panamera. The Longest-Time-Owned Award went to former PCA Chesapeake president Gary Martinez, for his black 2003 911 Carrera 4S. And the Newest Member Award went to Rob Carter, who owns a white Macan.

Our next four events were chaired by Rich. His Air & Space Ice Cream Tour on July 16th drew 37 people in 21 cars, shown in photo above. The 65-mile drive started from Mt. Airy, MD, and ended at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, VA. This museum near Dulles International Airport is an annex of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. The tour attendees enjoyed the museum’s Astronaut Ice Cream, as well as Shake Shack’s more traditional offerings.

Guest tour master Mark Miller’s Bonkey’s Ice Cream Tour on Aug. 6th attracted 52 people in 31 cars. The wonderful 60-mile drive started from Upperco and ended at Bonkey’s in Whiteford, MD (shown in the photo above).

Guest tour master Ron Farb’s Aug. 12th Allegheny Mountain Tour in Pennsylvania drew 33 people in 20 cars, shown in the photo above. The enjoyable drive began from Middletown, MD, passed through the Keystone State’s delightful PA-26 highway, and ended up at Jimmy Joy’s Log Cabin Inn in Hancock, MD, where the participants had a hearty lunch.

The Oct. 8th Off-Road Tour attracted 55 people and 25 SUVs from both the PCA Chesapeake and PCA Potomac regions. This 15-mile drive was held in and around Sugarloaf Mountain in Maryland’s Frederick County, shown in the photo above. This event was jointly planned and organized by guest tour master Jim Hemig and Tour Co-Chair Rich Ehrlich of PCA Chesapeake, as well as by Diane Sullenberger of PCA Potomac. The participants had lunch at the Sugarloaf Mountain Vineyard.

The 54th Chesapeake Challenge had to be rescheduled because of inclement weather on the original Sept. 23rd date. So the multi-activity Challenge was held at the Elkridge and Harford Hunt Club in Monkton on Oct. 21st, the date for one of my three fall colors tours. I canceled one of the tours to make room for this most important event of our region.

2023 Tours (cont’d)

The Tour & Rally Committee’s contribution to the daylong Chesapeake Challenge was a Gimmick Rally that took 42 participants in 21 cars around northern Baltimore and Harford counties. The gimmicks and route I created covered 62 miles of delightful back roads. Chad and Gabriella Wasileski won the rally, shown in the photo above, followed in second place by Jonathan Silverman and Carolyn Bernota. Chip Reichhart and Charles Gittings finished in third place.

Our 13th event of 2023 was my West Virginia Fall Colors Tour on Oct. 29th. A total of 53 people in 31 cars took part. We drove on scenic back roads from Middletown, MD, to Berkeley Springs, WV, in the morning. After lunch at Canary Grill, we drove some more in the afternoon on the delightfully twisty roads between Berkeley Springs and Paw Paw, and then back to Canary Grill, where the tour ended. Some of the participants are shown in the photo above.

2023 Tours (cont’d)

Our second fall colors drive and 14th event in 2023 was my Catoctin Mountain Fall Colors Tour on Nov. 5th. With 67 people in 36 cars, this afternoon tour was our biggest event of the year, in terms of turnout, as the photo above shows. We started from Reisterstown, had a restroom break in Thurmont and concluded the tour in Middletown, MD. The 77-mile route took us on some of the most enjoyable back roads of Baltimore County, Carroll County and Frederick County.

PCA Chesapeake’s annual Kindertime and Linda’s Legacy Tour – in support of the charity campaigns to collect toys for Baltimore’s disadvantaged children and winter necessities for the city’s homeless – was our 15th and final event of 2023. The Dec. 9th charity gathering was hosted by Porsche Hunt Valley and its general manager, Steve Postol. Steve kindly provided snacks and beverages during the morning portion of the event. Afterwards, 28 event attendees in 16 cars joined a drive planned and organized by Rich from Hunt Valley to Savage, MD, where a good lunch was enjoyed by all. Altogether, our TSD rally, gimmick rally and 12 driving tours in 2023 attracted 651 attendees and 357 cars. These numbers represented about 85 percent of total registrations. Our 2023 Tour & Rally Schedule is still available in this issue of Patter, for your reference and a bird’s-eye -view. We look forward to seeing you in our driving events in 2024.

The PCA Juniors program has been created so kids can enjoy PCA events, learn about Porsches and build the enthusiasm that runs through all of the Porsche Club of America. Who is eligible? Any child under age 18 who is registered by a current PCA member can participate in the program. (Note: This is not a PCA Membership.) What will the child receive? PCA Juniors will receive a welcome package that includes an ageappropriate gift and PCA Juniors ID badge. We look forward to developing the program and its features over time.
