Editors Message: Winter is definitely here and if you’re like me you’ve already installed a winter wheel set on your Porsche, if not you’ve probably prepared your car for it’s winter sleep. I also went ahead and replaced the 8+ year old tires on my 924S with some new Kumho summer performance tires, so the Boxster S will be my choice for very cold days. The votes for the new Executive Counsil are in and the results on page 9. In addition we will have a new membership chair in 2022, thanks to Ken Wilmers for volunteering and much appreciation to Minta Miller for years of great work in that role! Our incoming President Ron Farb had the chance to interview racing champion and Maryland native Cameron Das, due to the length/depth of the interview part 1 begins on page 28 and part 2 will appear next month. Members can run car/parts ads here for free or paid ad’s for their businesses. If you have an article idea or any feedback, please send an email to editor@pcachs.org Best, James B Beavan III

Previous Cars: MB TDT Turbo Diesel Station Wagons (’76, ‘85). MB E 320 Station Wagon (’96, ‘01). Chevy Camaro, 1969, New, First Car. Previous most memorable and fun to drive car: New 1991 Saab 9000 Turbo, 5 door hatchback. When it came time to buy a vehicle, what made you choose your Porsche and is this your first Porsche (if not please detail prior Porsche's): I was born in Beirut, Lebanon. A very European influenced cosmopolitan and modern city until the Civil war broke out in 1972. I emigrated to the USA with my parents in 1969, before the war broke out. As a teenager in Lebanon, I was captivated and followed European performance cars in the Monte Carlo Rally, the Dakar Rally, the 24 hour Le Mans, etc.…Porsches were my dream cars. High performance cars that are also daily drivers and somewhat affordable. Between raising three kids involved in sports that required roomy cars and owning a sailboat and participating in sailing regattas that also needed roomy cars for the transportation of equip-

ment and parts, owning a small sports car was out of the question. Later in life, other priorities took precedent. This past winter, now that kids are grown and are independent, and I have no one that I must consult or ask permission from to indulge in whims and I was enjoying the sunny and warm Florida weather, I purchased the Ocean Blue 1998 986 that I currently own. It looked so enticing in the showroom, and its low mileage as well as the available detailed maintenance records showed the excellent condition that the car was in. I was finally buying my dream. The test drive lasted five minutes! I wanted to own it right away. I was not a Porsche aficionado, I did not read nor subscribed to Porsche dedicated magazines or clubs, I therefore was unaware of the IMS issues, nor the fact that “I must remove the front bumper frequently to clean the radiator grill” issues, nor “keep the four drains unclogged so that you do not flood the underside of the driver seat and the almighty computer freezes” issues. I was in a bliss until my first PCA Chesapeake Region “ice cream run”. In a way, am happy that I didn’t know all those issues, because frankly, I would not have bought it. I enjoy boating and cars. NOT working and maintaining boats and cars. I lucked out that I keep the car in an enclosed environment most of the time, I only drive it for pure fun and pleasure, some “ice cream” runs, some road trips, did an autocross, but it is not my daily driver. The only issue that is serious and not yet resolved despite many attempts, is the airbag issue. Since I am in Chesapeake region just for the summer months, I tried to participate in many PCA functions. I have been rewarded with meeting and making great friends in the group and am hoping to continue this trend after my return from Florida next June. As a new member of PCA Chesapeake are there any particular events you are interested in participating in or would like more information on? I am very much in favor of local social activities with our cars. Short drives that end in a destination that provides decent food or drinks or desserts while we enjoy our camaraderie. Local cars and coffees, I frequently see a group in downtown Annapolis, but Porsche presence seem lacking. Impromptu get togethers for a brunch or happy hour in nearby locations. Have you attended a New Member party at one of our three local sponsoring dealerships (if not that should be on your list for 2022)? No, wasn’t aware of any, nor I have been asked. If money was no object, what Porsche would you love to own and why: I have driven a few 911’s over the years and have enjoyed their appeal in looks, power, presence, etc. …. But, for my driving preferences, handling and not pure speed or power, I prefer the 986 S. I like convertibles and open air feel and look. That eliminates a few models. If money was no object, I would buy a Ferrari 488 Spider. Anything additional you would like to share about yourself: I feel fortunate to stumble into this group and hope to be a contributing member, friend and fellow Porsche owner.

Touring with a Taycan 4S All words and photos by: Jim McKee 2021 Fall Colors Tour To West Virginia in a Taycan 4S As a PCA member of approximately 20 years and a Porsche owner of 46 years, I figured it was time to write down my observations on how things have changed. In particular, how my Taycan 4S performed on a terrific Maryland Fall Colors tour to West Virginia. But how did this start for my wife and I? 45 years ago, while in Navy training in Idaho Falls, Idaho, we had the opportunity to participate in several time-distance rally events through the farmlands of Idaho in a 1963, 356B Super 90 on our days off. Dirt roads, paved roads, we learned early that we loved these, Porsches. I also learned a 356 is not the best “off road” vehicle. This car stayed with us for a year and then we had to get sensible…. Fast forward to August 2021 (two 914’s, three 911’s and a Panamera later) when we took ownership of a 2021 Taycan 4S. An EV is a whole new experience with many questions to be answered. What is the range? Can I find the next charger? How long will take to get there with charging? Will I be late to events? I took the first few months of driving to work through these and other questions. When the Fall Colors tour to Berkeley Springs, WV was announced, we signed on. My first thoughts went back to our rallies in Idaho. My goodness, how the technology has changed. But my first rule: no off roading in the Taycan 4S (not a Cross Turismo). My lack of familiarity with performance vs range issues and a lack of familiarity
12
Chesapeake Region
Taycan 4S (cont’d)
with available chargers fed my initial feelings of range stress. The coordinator of the Fall Tour provided a rough route for the rally. Not unlike a flight plan, waypoints, fuel stops and divert fields, I set about looking at the route and available chargers. At this point, I didn’t have any confidence in the estimated range calculated by the car because it uses historical data to calculate future performance. The question was how the up and down through the back roads at various speeds and accelerations and decelerations would affect total range. The planned rally was 160miles. It was well within the Taycan’s rated range. It was approximately 20 miles to the start and finish point from Frederick, Maryland. I wondered what kind of range I would have remaining at the end of this event.
With the route plotted and chargers located, I now had confidence that we would not be left stranded by a spirited drive. If I had to bail out of the rally, I would follow procedure, pull over and wave everyone else to keep going. I would then rejoin at the end of rally and provide comic relief to the ICE (internal combustion engine) Porsches as we discussed how it went. We gathered the morning of the rally in Middletown, Maryland. As is with all Porsche events it was an enjoyable occasion, with everyone admiring everyone else’s cars and trading stories. It was very nice assortment of oldest-to-newest 911’s, some 928’s, Caymans and Boxster’s, a Cayenne and a Panamera Turbo S Hybrid Executive. I was the only Taycan. I felt no pressure, everything was planned. I knew I had enough battery range to stay with everyone. As we lined up into our three groups of nine cars, the sound of these beautiful machines was wonderful. As the only EV, I sat there in relative silence, the low whirr of my synthetic, government-mandated electric motor noise barely perceptible above the idles and revs of everyone else. Once we got going, the initial miles were through straight, roller coaster roads. Short runs that rose and fell 10 feet over a distance of 50 feet. I think it surprised most of us (no wheels left the pavement, as far as I know). But I had not tightened up the Taycan’s suspension yet, so inertial forces were noticeable in a 5000 lb car trying to jump this
13
Chesapeake Region
Taycan 4S (cont’d) Jim McKee
little hill. Every subsequent short hill was taken at a more careful pace and the Taycan’s torque was put to work on the downhill sides of each hill. Without getting into a tedious description of the next 150 miles, I can say that it was a very pleasant run of tight turns and gentle hills. The Taycan had no issues keeping pace with or cornering with the other cars. Turning was responsive and tight, but tight turns felt especially tight because of the size and width of the car compared to the road width. The trip to Berkeley Springs was a joy and as far as I know, we arrived with as many cars as had departed. After a lunch break, we all took a short winding run to Paw Paw, West Virginia. After a short break, we started back. Here are some of my observations on the Taycan 4S’ performance during the rally: The air suspension is remarkably smooth. It was only after my wife/navigator commented that she was getting motion sickness from the ride while reading the navigation directions. I switched the suspension to sport mode and the car ride tightened up. No more motion sickness feelings. The car is so quiet. There are no squeaks or rattles. There are really no aural cues for how fast you are going, other than a tone change in the motor noise. With the air suspension and instant torque, you can be doing (way) north of 80 mph and it feels like 55mph. There is a button to turn on regenerative braking, but it is a gentle braking akin engine braking in ICE higher gear. Otherwise, Porsche has engineered the car to coast for reasons of range efficiency.
14
Chesapeake Region
Taycan 4S (cont’d) Normal braking is a seamless combination of regenerative (recuperative) and large, disk brakes. During the rally, 95% of all braking by the brake pedal uses the electric recuperative braking. The last few percent of the braking is done with the rotors and pads. At the end of a 20-minute run through the mountains near Paw Paw, West Virginia, we stopped for a 15-minute break. The Taycan rotors were cool to the touch immediately after 20-minutes of vigorous braking activity. As advertised, torque is instantaneous. If we fell behind a little, it took no time to catch up. People behind me said they could really see the acceleration, but to be honest, I could also see the instant acceleration of the 911’s ahead of me. Porsches are just fast…. The return trip from Berkeley Springs was uneventful. More good roads and by then, I knew range was not going to be an issue. I think that in spite a lot of spirited driving, the equally spirited braking provided some charging back to the battery. I finished the rally with 80 miles predicted range (42% charge) and easily made it back to a Level 1 DC charger in Frederick. After a 20-minute charge back to 90% capacity, we departed for the Eastern Shore. Did the car surprise me, in some ways? Yes. The rally course and distance challenged what I thought was going to be a range of about 200 miles on 100% charge. In reality, total range was nearer to 250 miles. I felt like that was comparable to putting my 2009 911S through the same workout on 16 gallons of gas. It is just easier to find gas and quicker to fill the 911. Did the car handle like a 911? Well… it handles like a four door, 5000lb 911. Steering is responsive and well -tuned to the mass of the car. The suspension can be Rolls Royce smooth or 911 tight. It’s a nice choice to have. The Taycan’s acceleration is a hoot and while some say that not having the roar of the engine and exhaust is a minus, finding yourself instantaneously and silently at 80mph from 50mph gives you the feeling of “OMG, how did I get here so fast?”. It is not a plus or a minus. It is just different! My range stress is now gone. I know the Taycan can handle vigorous driving and have enough range to get to the next charger. The rally was a 5-13-2014: 1965 356C Loaded in Trailer for the great exercise for the car, the Journey Home to Maryland driver, and the navigator….

I fell in love with that car, and have wanted one ever since. I have also been a convertible fan since I had a Miata about 15 years ago. Our 911 was my retirement present to myself this spring. This is our first Porsche, but not the family's. The first car our eldest son bought after graduating college was a 2003 986 Boxster.

2021 Crab Feast: We’re Back!! With COVID receding in our rearview mirror, we’re back! For the 15th consecutive year (not counting last year’s canceled event), the Chesapeake Region PCA Crab Feast will be held at Kemptown Park in Monrovia, MD on Saturday, August 28th- rain or shine! Bring your Porsche and sense of humor to the Feast for a non-competitive car show where cleanliness and condition do not matter. Our tongue and cheek awards to the winners of the Region’s annual picnic are always fun and unpredictable, and will be based on your Porsche’s unique curb appeal. (Think it of as a midsummer’s version of the Bob and Manny Show without presents.) Trophies and door prizes are compliments of Porsche of Silver Spring!
As with every Crab Feast past, it is the food and venue that keeps Chesapeake Region members coming back for more. There will be tons of crab, shrimp, burgers, dogs, soft drinks and beer that the Region will provide - not to mention tables of side dishes and desserts that you will provide. Lighthouse Seafood of New Market will once again be steaming our crabs and jumbo shrimp. We’ll have two pavilions at Kemptown Park, with reserved parking, and we have been assured the lovely breezes that have graced the event in the past will be returning for the 14th repeat of this event! A large playground will keep your young Porsche enthusiasts occupied and a real, honest-to-goodness bathroom with running water will appeal to the most persnickety of crab feast clean freaks. Think fun family outing! This year’s event is again a little bit retro. Due to the lateness of the Porsche Parade this year, we’ve moved the event back to its traditional date the weekend before Labor Day. And the time is moved back as well to allow us to enjoy the cooler early evening air and breezes. We’ll start at 3:00 PM and end at 7:00 PM. Registration will open on July 28th on MSR (Motorsports Registration). You will be asked to bring a salad, dessert, or side-dish. This year’s increase in cost to $40 for adults and $15 for 13-17 year-olds is due to the very high prices of crabs in 2021. The Crab Feast is Free for children 12 and under. Look for an eblast with reminders and details on how to register! Questions? Contact Ellen Beck at ebeck944@comcast.net or Bob Gutjahr at Robert.g.Gutjahr@leidos.com See everyone at Kemptown Park on Saturday, 28 August!

Chesapeake Region Across the Atlantic: A Special Place at a Special Time!
Aaron Miller
Wilkommen aus Stuttgart! Fall in Germany usually means Fests and leads up to the Christmas Markets opening. This year, the Fests were verboten but the Christmas Markets are just around the corner. Fall also means we celebrate a holiday a bit more personally - our wedding anniversary! Through the gracious donation of our friends in Chesapeake Region, we received an “all-expense paid” dinner at Christophorus, the restaurant sharing space in the Porsche Museum. Is it exclusive? You bet, I had to make our anniversary reservation nine weeks in advance! Is it expensive? We blew through the entire dinner donation! Is it worth it? Read on!
Restaurant Christophorus started life in the mind of Porsche A.G. CEO Wendelin Wiedeking, who was so impressed with the traditional New York Steakhouse he decided to recreate it in Stuttgart. The steaks are flown in from a supplier in Kansas, so we chuckled a bit when we considered we moved to Stuttgart for Kansas beef. Naturally, the restaurant was well appointed, featured a large wine menu, and excellent mixed drinks. We treated ourselves to champagne as an aperitif, and enjoyed some wonderful German bread as an appetizer, a perfect start! Caesar salads rounded out the first course, preparing us for what came next. Naturally, steaks were the main course and did not disappoint. We both opted for the obvious cut, the filet mignon, paired with onion rings and seasonable vegetables. How does one describe the perfect steak, except by comparing it to something lesser? With a picture, of course! I’m sure we embodied an American stereotype as we took pictures of our gorgeous meals, but we were smitten with the perfection! The steaks had the ideal crust, cooked to an exceptional medium -rare, and our waiter ensured our wine never ran out. Like a summer camp romance, our steak experience ended too soon

Atlantic (cont’d) and left us satisfied and with a bit of longing for what just happened. Our assessment? You’d be hard pressed to find a better steak, and I’d challenge you to find a better steakhouse in Europe. Given our special occasion, I informed the restaurant as part of our reservation that we were celebrating our anniversary. My only expectation was that our waiter and the restaurant would make us feel welcome, but the Restaurant Christophorus “Wonderwisch” program included a special desert! With a chocolate “Alles Gute zum Jahrestag (All the best for your anniversary) message buttressing a mini-Bundt cake covered in chocolate, we were blown away! We enjoyed an espresso in Porsche “Colors of ‘69” espresso cups while we digested our incredible meal. The venue, the ambience, the staff, and the meal all coalesced into a memorable experience that was easily once-in-a-lifetime. We approached our experience as “money is no option” and even then, Porsche came through with a 911 experience at base Cayenne money. Would we recommend it? Yes! Next time you’re in Stuttgart, make sure you make time and a reservation! Restaurant Christophorus accepts reservations through the Open Table website and application, and are your best options to secure a table at your desired time and date. Double check current Stuttgart, BadenWurttemberg, and German COVID restrictions prior to arriving. *Want to follow along on our adventure between articles? Like to see pictures of Germany? And So It Began…Restoring a 356, Part 5: It takes all of us Steve Groh In this last episode, we thankfully acknowledge the ever-patient souls who have dedicated their time and talents to keep our beloved 356’s on the road. As previously mentioned, as our 356’s age, so do the experts we have come to rely on, and, truth be told, the field of available craftsmen is shrinking. My recommendation is to not put off your restoration, as the current waitlist for reputable shops is already long and will only get longer. Recognizing this, you have a few options as to how to approach your 356 restoration. I have known a few owners who simply dropped off the car at a shop and said, “call me when it’s done.” Patience and an open checkbook are the necessary components in that plan, and the results can be very rewarding, given the right shop. I did not choose that path. I had the tools, space, and the time, and needed to make the most of my limited budget. In the end, however, I realized a lot about myself and the car. There have been quite a few references to cars having personalities and I must admit a feeling that this car wanted to be restored, so it felt like we were partners throughout the restoration. The 356 is not a complicated machine, so you can shorten the restoration timeframe by attacking the systems simultaneously – suspension, interior, brakes, wiring, engine, transaxle, glass, chrome, etc. A project management plan will be necessary (the pros do the same thing!) – plan to send parts out for restoration or source new parts well before installation so that no-one person or process is waiting. And since you won’t know everything, reach out to experts as many times as needed to feel confident that what you are rebuilding, restoring, or installing is being done correctly! Here is a condensed list of businesses, craftsmen, books, and reference material that have helped enormously. Some of these have since retired, but their counsel has nonetheless been invaluable: General Knowledge: 356 Registry (online and magazine – a must); Porsche Club of America; Books/Reference: Ron Roland’s “Restored by Hand”; Joe Leoni’s “356 Electrics”; Charlie White’s “Reproduction Factory Manuals” (get the entire set!!); Dr. Brett Johnson’s “A Restoration Guide to Authenticity”; Jim Kellogg’s “Guide

These are just a few that delivered on expectations and freely helped, when necessary, which was often. Good luck with your restoration, and I hope to see you next year where we can trade restoration tales!

AFTER HOLIDAY PARTY & YANKEE SWAP
AFTER HOLIDAY PARTY & YANKEE SWAP PCA-Chesapeake Region Come celebrate the end of 2021 and welcome in 2022! Join us at Turf Valley on January 8th for our annual After Holiday Party and awards ceremony, followed by the highly anticipated Yankee Swap conducted by “The Bob and Manny Show,” with your hosts, Bob Gutjahr and Manny Alban! The Chesapeake Region has established a reputation for the finest and fiercest Yankee Swap in PCA, one that has been copied by other regions, but never quite duplicated. A “Gift Exchange” is merely a mild description of the feeding frenzy that takes hold at this triple steal event. Chesapeake Region, despite being below the Mason Dixon Line, puts the “Yankee” into Yankee Swap…. The good stuff is coveted, hoarded and only grudgingly given up under duress. Turf Valley is a hotel & spa with rooms available. Anyone wishing to stay at the resort for the night should contact the hotel directly to make a reservation and let them know you are attending the Chesapeake Region PCA event. This event regularly sells out quickly-so, register early! Event Details Date: January 8, 2022 34
