Presidents Message Ron Farb

The Chesapeake Region Officers, Committee Chairs, and Event Leads had a busy January planning a full slate of events for the year. I understand that many of you are still reluctant to participate in group events while COVID-19 is still out there and I totally respect that. I’m sure that at some point when you’re comfortable with the current COVID situation and specifics of the event, we will see you again. For those of you that are comfortable attending events now, we look forward to seeing you but do ask that you follow all PCA, CDC, Maryland and county COVID guidelines for COVID prevention.

Here are just a few of the things we have lined up for 2022 and more will be coming: 14 tours 9 autocross events 6 tech events

Monthly dinner socials Monthly breakfast socials Additional socials New Member Parties

4 community service events Zoom presentations After Holiday Party Crab Feast

Chesapeake Challenge 53 I also strongly encourage everyone to check out PCA’s Porsche Parade at the Kalahari Resorts in the Poconos. This National PCA event is June 12-18 and likely will be the closest Porsche Parade to our region for the next 6 years if not longer. It certainly is the closest National PCA event to us this year. This will be the first year I am going and I am psyched! Registration is now open.

As a volunteer organization, we always need people. As such, please let me know if you would be interested in helping with the following activities. We really need you. Looking for one more person to help Stacy plan and run Chesapeake Challenge 53 which is one of our oldest and largest events. Looking for someone with Web design and/or Graphical design expertise to help Jim H give our web pages a refresh. Must know WordPress Looking for a professional-level photographer to attend some of our events and take great action shots that then can be used to help advertise Chesapeake on our social media and web sites. As always, if you haven’t met me or any of the Board members, then please come up and introduce yourselves to us at any of our events. Ron

When it came time to buy a vehicle, what made you choose your Porsche and is this your first Porsche (if not please detail prior Porsche's): Ever since high school, I have always loved Porsches, but never thought that I could afford one. My first car as a teenager was a Triumph Spitfire convertible, so I naturally gravitated into looking to buy a Spitfire. However, it wasn’t until my wife saw a 911 Cabriolet for sale online and said, “what about owning one of those?” Come to find out, a used Porsche was in my price range so a brand-new search for Cabriolets began. It wasn’t until many months later that I finally found one that I liked! A one owner, a 2002, Porsche 911, with only 64,500 miles, and came with a full-service history, I knew that I had found my one true car. Even better, when I went to see the car for the first time, I fell in love with the color, Meridian Silver. This car couldn’t get any better, so I became a Porsche owner who was loving life. What encouraged you to join the Porsche Club of America: Friends of mine are in the club, and I thought it would be a great way to participate in events. Plus, the amount of resources available are so worth every penny. 10

What are your favorite Regional &/or National events: This past summer, I went to a Tech Session at Ralphs and wow, what a shop that is! The Porsche Swap in Carlisle, PA was a great place to see lots of like-minded Porsche owners. The Ice Cream Tour landed on the hottest day of the summer, so the ice cream was the cherry on top of the drive. Unfortunately, I was unable to attend the Garage Crawl, so I now know next year to be ready on the day of sign-ups! What is your favorite PCA memory: This summer, my friend and I went to the PCA open house. It was so cool to see the facility and where they record the PCA videos (plus loved the Mission BBQ). What advice about PCA or Chesapeake would you give to new members: Porsche people are very approachable, so be ready to jump right in and make some new friends! See ya at the next Hunt Valley Cars and Coffee. If money was no object, what Porsche would you love to own and why: Oh easy! Porsche 930 Turbo in Guards Red since I grew up in the 80’s.

Across the Atlantic A Golden Winter

Wilkommen aus Stuttgart! January saw Stuttgart gripped by winter weather in the form of gray skies, occasional rain, biting winds, and temperatures rigidly stuck at freezing. I know, I know, Chesapeake Region clearly wound up with the short end of the weather stick this month. But like the rest of you, chilly temperatures drove us inside for the month. Fortunately, the Porsche Museum came to our rescue again! 2022 marks the Golden Anniversary of F.A. Porsche’s design company, Porsche Design. In honor and celebration, the Porsche Museum created a special display debuting

on 19 January 2022 and running through 11 July 2022. Centered around the all-new 2022 Porsche 911 Targa 4S Porsche Design Edition and the 1972 911S Targa lovingly restored by Porsche Classic Stuttgart, the exhibit showcases some of the most significant designs by Porsche Design. From office chairs, smoking pipes, and sunglasses, it’s clear that Ferry Porsche’s design philosophy of, “If you analyze the function of an object, it’s form often becomes obvious” is ubiquitous and endured through the decades. Naturally, the new 50th Anniversary Porsche Design chronograph features prominently, and it would be a complete shame if every purchaser of the new PD Edition 911 declined to purchase the matching watch with their new car. Eventually though, blenders and old cell phones become humorous observations to a backdrop of what really brings one back to the Porsche Museum again and again, the cars! Following our last trip through the displays in August

2021, Porsche kindly revamped their display of street cars to feature my favored model range, the transaxle series. Starting with a painfully beautiful Signal Green 924 and running through a two-tone 924 Turbo, prototype 944 cabriolet, Speed Yellow 968 Club Sport, and finishing with a best-of-series 928 GTS (with a stick no less!) the transaxle display rivaled the sheer awe of the mighty 917s preceding them. As many readers may recall, I’m something of a repository of transaxle knowledge; I was exceptionally surprised to discover Porsche identified the prototype 944’s paint color as “Flamingo Metallic” however it clearly matched with the notable hue “Cassis Red Metallic.” For those of you who have seen our 968 in Cassis Red Metallic, I would challenge you to find the difference in color between the two because for the life of me, I could not.

The Porsche Museum remains the best way to spend $20 and a few hours on a Sunday compared to anywhere in Stuttgart. *Want to follow along on our adventure between articles? Like to see pictures of Germany? Check out our Instagram @pnkpnzr968 where we’ll be posting car-related content! *

2021 Crab Feast: We’re Back!! With COVID receding in our rearview mirror, we’re back! For the 15th consecutive year (not counting last year’s canceled event), the Chesapeake Region PCA Crab Feast will be held at Kemptown Park in Monrovia, MD on Saturday, August 28th- rain or shine! Bring your Porsche and sense of humor to the Feast for a non-competitive car show where cleanliness and condition do not matter. Our tongue and cheek awards to the winners of the Region’s annual picnic are always fun and unpredictable, and will be based on your Porsche’s unique curb appeal. (Think it of as a midsummer’s version of the Bob and Manny Show without presents.) Trophies and door prizes are compliments of Porsche of Silver Spring! As with every Crab Feast past, it is the food and venue that keeps Chesapeake Region members coming back for more. There will be tons of crab, shrimp, burgers, dogs, soft drinks and beer that the Region will provide - not to mention tables of side dishes and desserts that you will provide. Lighthouse Seafood of New Market will once again be steaming our crabs and jumbo shrimp. We’ll have two pavilions at Kemptown Park, with reserved parking, and we have been assured the lovely breezes that have graced the event in the past will be returning for the 14th repeat of this event! A large playground will keep your young Porsche enthusiasts occupied and a real, honest-to-goodness bathroom with running water will appeal to the most persnickety of crab feast clean freaks. Think fun family outing! This year’s event is again a little bit retro. Due to the lateness of the Porsche Parade this year, we’ve moved the event back to its traditional date the weekend before Labor Day. And the time is moved back as well to allow us to enjoy the cooler early evening air and breezes. We’ll start at 3:00 PM and end at 7:00 PM. Registration will open on July 28th on MSR (Motorsports Registration). You will be asked to bring a salad, dessert, or side-dish. This year’s increase in cost to $40 for adults and $15 for 13-17 year-olds is due to the very high prices of crabs in 2021. The Crab Feast is Free for children 12 and under. Look for an eblast with reminders and details on how to register! Questions? Contact Ellen Beck at ebeck944@comcast.net or Bob Gutjahr at Robert.g.Gutjahr@leidos.com See everyone at Kemptown Park on Saturday, 28 August!

Autocross 2022! Greg Hartke

Welcome to Autocross 2022! I’ve been waiting and waiting on the folks at Prince George’s Stadium (PGS) to work on my scheduling request (they were holding off, awaiting further direction from the County) and with no update, I had this article for the Patter all written and ready to send early to Patter Editor James Beavan. I was (ever hopeful…) holding off ‘til closer to the deadline to submit when, out of the blue, the Director of Ticket Operations at PGS contacted me with the needed information and we began to work in earnest on the schedule. Astonishingly, I was able to close negotiations on the AX schedule in record time and am now able to present the 2022 AX schedule: Venue

Scheduling AX is an interesting endeavor because I have to work around the Bowie Baysox home baseball schedule, other events at PGS (of which there are many), the Potomac AX schedule, the Chesapeake PCA event schedule (to a certain extent – I only work around the really major events), and holidays. All these imposed constraints certainly make the task interesting. My original event schedule proposal was sent to PGS right after Thanksgiving (which is fairly early for the next year), so maybe I was near the top of the priority list for scheduling when the word from the County came in. Who knows? Certainly, I have a really good working relationship with the Director of Ticket Operations at PGS (she’s very good – very communicative and has been quick to turn around requests) and that can never hurt. As it turned out, there was no date available at PGS for the month of May, but I expected there to be at least one date that wouldn’t work, so I had a backup plan: If I couldn’t find a date for a particular month, I was just going to try to schedule an event that month at Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen. Actually, I was sweating over possible scheduling at Ripken because the delay from PGS this year meant that available dates there had to be shrinking. (It is, after all, a popular facility.) Ripken is a great facility because the lot is huge and is in great shape, not to mention the availability of real rest rooms, of course. ;) The downside is that it is logistically very difficult for us because getting the trailer with all our AX equipment to Ripken for the events is really tough. We haven’t figured out how we’re going to do that yet, but we’ll work something out. We always do. ;) In the end, May was the month that had the scheduling problem at PGS and the only weekend that was available at Ripken (due to the Ironbirds’ home games and other events) was Memorial Day weekend (and a Sunday, at that, which is not my favorite choice). I solicited opinions from AX Co-chair Brad Martinez, President Ron Farb, and fellow AXer (and Patter editor) James on the advisability of holding an event over a holiday weekend and all agreed we should go for it. Let’s think of it as a fun PCA event for those of us who aren’t going anywhere over the (traditional) final weekend of the summer. AX is much more fun (and enormously more exciting) than lying around a beach anyway! ;)

Autocross (cont’d) Our AX season can be summarized this way: Test & Tune – a practice event for experienced drivers looking for an opportunity to knock the rust off. Introduction to Autocross – our annual AX school is expected to return to its usual early-season slot, providing newcomers the opportunity to learn from experienced instructors 7 full Autocross races, 6 at PGS and 1 at Ripken Tell you what… I am really getting the itch to get out to a race and go flying around again like a bat out of Chicago. The racing season can’t come soon enough for me, that’s for sure! I don’t know about you, but this happens to me every year. Maybe it’s worse this year because my 2014 Cayman S was down for an extended period last year (due to parts availability) and I wound up racing with my 2012 MINI Cooper S (with almost 150k on the clock). That was fun in its way and it was certainly different racing a momentum car again, but racing my P-car is a lot more fun. For anyone who’s never done it but might be thinking about trying AX, note that the AX School is held very early in the season. (The rationale is that we want to provide instruction early in the season so that the students who attend will have all season to participate in full events.) With no prior experience, your first AX event can be a decidedly intimidating experience and the AX School will go a long way towards mitigating that. I did the AX School (with POT, actually) before I started racing and I still recall it well. Interestingly, I was really nervous ‘til I started driving, but once I got going, I quickly calmed down. The AX School begins early with a chalk talk by AX Co-chair Brad, followed by 3 hours of exercises (at three stations – more details below), lunch, and a real honest-to-Christmas AX. To expand on that, you start with Brad giving some instruction on performance driving techniques, focused driving exercises to give you the opportunity to actually apply the necessary techniques, then you put it all together (with an instructor in the car to help you) in a real race with multiple runs (with each run being a lap around the course). Last year, the students got 8 runs each in the AX race at the school and had an absolute blast. Driving fast in a straight line is one thing (anybody can push the go peddle hard – it doesn’t take much expertise to do that), but having the ability to actually use the handling capabilities of your car is another. As Scottish rally driver Colin McRae so aptly put it, "Straight roads are for fast cars, turns are for fast drivers." Let’s think of it this way:

AX will help make you a fast driver.

21

Chesapeake Region

Autocross (cont’d) Greg Hartke

I’ve said this before: If you’ve ever had an itch to see what your car can do when pushed to its handling limits, AX is a wonderful opportunity to do so safely and the AX School provides a golden opportunity to learn and practice important elements of the necessary driving skills before taking them out on a full course. Whether or not you actually decide to pursue AX on a regular basis is immaterial. Either way, the AX School is a unique opportunity to learn car control and can safely open your eyes to a whole new world of excitement. Safe? You bet! The coolest part of AX is that you can push your car very hard without risking damage to the car. (The worst you can do is hit a cone and if you’re me, you then cry because you have to clean the cone marks off your car. ;) ) You’re using the car the way it was meant to be used and just about the only things you’re really wearing are brakes and tires. If you’ve never tried AX before but thought about it, you really owe it to yourself to come out and go for it. And of course, the best way to get started is to attend the AX School where you’ll get classroom instruction followed by plenty of seat time to apply what you’ve learned. And note that we really focus on the driving portion of the school. Since the AX School is an early season event, it’s time right now for anyone with an interest to consider attending. The school is for newcomers and inexperienced drivers who desire focused instruction at the basic skills of AX. (It’s not necessary before attending an AX race, but it is helpful.) The day will begin with Brad providing a short period of instruction (about an hour of chalk talk), after which the real fun begins. In the morning, students will rotate through three instructor-led exercises: a figure-8 dual skid pad, a slalom and threshold braking section, and a small section of an AX course where the student will put together all the driving elements. In the afternoon, the three exercise elements will be joined to form a full AX course and students will proceed with instructors for timed racing through the course. Another reason I really enjoy AX is the camaraderie found at the events. Our AX events (while certainly competitive) are also social activities. It’s a very friendly environment filled with other enthusiasts and what could be better than that? See for yourself! And don’t forget: anyone who has joined the PCA in the last year gets a free AX. Come out and join us! Note, too, that our Taste of Autocross program will be back in effect this year. Anyone 18 y.o. or older can pay a very nominal fee (a few dollars, mandated by National) and have the opportunity to ride along with instructors during their competitive laps to see what it’s like. To do so, you can (preferably) register on Motorsportreg.com before the event or walk-up the day of the event. Feedback from those who have participated in ToA has been very positive and there’s certainly nothing like a view from in-

A hint: because of the almost constant hard cornering, braking, and accelerating, it will seem a lot wilder inside the car with an experienced driver than it does just watching from the sideline. ;) Hey, have all you experienced and dedicated AX drivers figured out what you’re going to do for tires this year? That was always so easy – just go out and buy Bridgestone RE71R’s. Nothing’ to it! With the demise of the RE-71R’s, though, we’re all now forced to make a decision. I don’t claim to be the best when it comes to researching things like this, but as far as I can tell, the two best choices for the stock class (and I want to emphasize that it’s for stock class) would seem to be the Yokohama ADVAN A052 and the Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar 3. The Falken Azenis RT660 would also be a contender, but sadly does not come in the sizes I need for my car. From what I’ve read (and you have to be really careful when reading tire reviews), the Yokos seems to heat up really quickly, which makes them well suited to AX, but they may also wear really quickly and I’d prefer to be able to get one full season (which for me means something like 14 to 16 events) out of the tires. I’ve also read reviews saying that they require wide wheel widths and lots of camber to deliver optimal performance and life. Skimp on either of these, and you’ll be buying new tires quite often (no doubt contributing to the reputation for fast wear), but get it right, and you’ll be fast. That makes me think the stock configuration of my 2014 981 CS won’t work so well with the Yokos because of its modest camber. I haven’t decided yet (some days one, other days the other), but I’m going to have to pull the trigger soon. An important reminder for the experienced AXers: The helmet requirement is now SA2010, SA2015, or SA2020. Make sure your helmet is up-to-date when you come out to race this year! For those of you who may be contemplating AX, yes, you’re required to use a helmet when racing. To make it easy to get started, though, we have an assortment of loaner helmets available (along with head socks) so you can see what it’s like without the added commitment of buying your own helmet. YMMV, but for HPDE, I would use a full-face helmet, while for AX, I’m comfortable with an open-face helmet and no face shield. With a schedule in place, I’m rolling on the throttle as quickly as possible to prepare everything for the 2022 season. Still, plenty to do, but now I can make progress. Can’t wait for the season to start! Needless to say, Brad and I are looking forward to seeing you soon at the races! Greg Hartke CHS AX Co-chair

After Holiday Party/Yankee Swap: March 26th

AFTER HOLIDAY PARTY & YANKEE SWAP PCA-Chesapeake Region Come celebrate the end of 2021 and welcome in 2022 (a little late)! Join us at Turf Valley on March 26th for our annual After Holiday Party and awards ceremony, followed by the highly anticipated Yankee Swap conducted by “The Bob and Manny Show,” with your hosts, Bob Gutjahr and Manny Alban! The Chesapeake Region has established a reputation for the finest and fiercest Yankee Swap in PCA, one that has been copied by other regions, but never quite duplicated. A “Gift Exchange” is merely a mild description of the feeding frenzy that takes hold at this double steal event. Chesapeake Region, despite being below the Mason Dixon Line, puts the “Yankee” into Yankee Swap…. The good stuff is coveted, hoarded and only grudgingly given up under duress.

Turf Valley is a hotel & spa with rooms available. Anyone wishing to stay at the resort for the night should contact the hotel directly to make a reservation and let them know you are attending the Chesapeake Region PCA event. Our promo code is 28C5NR and rates start at $119 + taxes. This event regularly sells out quickly-so, register early! Attendance is capped at 85 people. Event Details

Member Profile: James & Annabelle Beavan James B. Beavan III

Member Names & Join Date: James & Annabelle Beavan, January 2017 Car(s): 2013 Boxster S, 1988 924S both manual and guards red, previously we owned a 2012 Cayenne Turbo in meteor gray. Have you served on any Regional or National committees: I started as a co-editor on the Patter in 2020 and then lead editor in 2021. Sometime in 2020 I took over publicity (Facebook) and in late 2021 Instagram responsibilities. My wife in 2022 has volunteered for the community service lead role, so expect some news on quarterly events next month. What encouraged you to join the Porsche Club of America: I first joined as a test drive member so I could see cars on the PCA Mart, then as a member as soon as I bought my

Beavan (cont’d) car. For $39 a year who wouldn’t want to join the biggest car club in America. When it came time to buy a vehicle, what made you choose your Porsche and is this your first Porsche (if not please detail prior Porsche's): When the idea first came to buy a Porsche, I simply wanted a fun weekend car to replace the experience of motorcycle riding. Initially I wanted to pay cash and was comparing the 986 to the Z3 as my wife was against me buying a Mazda MX-5. I decided on a Boxster, but had read about the

IMS and didn’t think the 986 was that attractive, so I started looking at 987’s. I came close to buying a 987.1 after a few test drives, but then figured since I’m getting a loan, might as well get a much newer 981 Boxster S. I had decided from the beginning I would get an S model and after test driving the PDK and Manual transmissions, I knew it would be a 6-speed for me. The next challenge was choosing a color and I narrowed it down to Red or Yellow and after the Yellow one I was watching sold I contacted Porsche Nashua about one they had listed with no photos from a recent trade. A week later (January 2017) I flew up to Manchester NH, was picked up by the dealer and by noon was on the road to MD driving my 2013 Boxster S. It was an unusually warm winter day, so I was able to put the top down for a bit of the drive. The 924S I acquired in October 2020 and this time it was a cash deal that led me to fly to Tampa FL. From there I drove the car to Orlando just barely making it in time to catch the auto train to Stanford VA. I had never driven a 924 prior to the day I bought it but was confident with all the information I had that it would turn out well. So far it’s been a great fun car to drive and I used it for autocross last season.

Beavan(cont’d)

James B. Beavan III What are your favorite Regional &/or National events: I’ve attended every Chesapeake event at least twice, but no National events besides the annual PCA open house. We really like the tours with a lunch, the crab feast, garage crawls, the slot car/chili cook-off (the first event we ever attended a few weeks after joining the club) and the open house. The whole family is looking forward to attending Porsche Parade in Pocono PA this June! What is your favorite PCA memory: The events held at Skip Conrey’s Valhalla Farm, what a cool place and great party barn. The Porsche 70th anniversary at Porsche Towson had a 959, 918 Spyder and Carrera GT on hand. The Linda’s Legacy events were life changing for my wife who started her own foundation 2 years ago. What advice about PCA or Chesapeake would you give to new members: Take advantage of the all the opportunities the club has for you to enjoy your Porsche and socialize. If you have kids, bring them, mine enjoy many of the events and the people in the club. If money was no object, what Porsche would you love to own and why: Well, like most people I really love the look and sound of the Carrera GT, though I’d probably take the 918 Spyder as it’s an easier car to drive. For my own money, I’d like a GT3 with a manual one day.

It’s Never Been Tracked Pedro P. Bonilla If you’ve ever purchased a used Porsche or if you have perused the classifieds for a used Porsche, I’m sure you've seen how many of the sellers state, with pride, and generally in bold letters, that: “this Porsche has never been tracked!” Every time I read that or hear it from a potential buyer of a car that I’ll be doing a Pre-Purchase Inspection (PPI) on that that’s what he’s looking for, it saddens me. The way I see it, why buy a Porsche if you will never drive it the way the good Doctor Porsche intended it to be driven? If you’re purchasing a very valuable and collectible example of the marque, as an investment, only to be admired and one day sold for multiple times of what you bought it for, I understand. But to buy it and be afraid to drive it hard is absurd! Porsches are just one of a handful of cars that are meant for street and track use. I don’t mean that you have to be at every track day from every PCA Region and become a track junkie, but one of the greatest feelings in Porsche ownership is driving your car on the track and discovering its and your limits. It’s also good for them! We’ve come to realize that Porsches that are driven hard (not abused) tend to work better and have less issues ‘down the road’. Some people are concerned about getting a stone chip and cover the front end in blue tape, but it’s not that bad! The track is usually fairly clean. Many of the most used tracks around the country are well maintained and kept by a professional crew which does a great job. Furthermore, you can control who’s in front of you and how close. If you feel that you’re too close just let them get away and you’ll have plenty of clean, fresh air in front of you.

32

Chesapeake Region

It’s Never Been Tracked (cont’d) Driving on the track is also quite safe! PCA does everything in its power to make it so. From the organization of the DE to the safety requirements which must be adhered to. Within 30 days before you get to the track you need to take your Porsche to an authorized shop for a (complimentary) tech inspection to make sure that the tires, brakes, suspension and all safety equipment such as seat belts, windshield, etc. are in place and operational. Racetracks are designed for cars to travel at high speed. The surface is generally better than most roads, cars run in the same direction (most of the time), and there are no speeding tickets issued. At all PCA DE events there are professional corner workers present to warn you of any potential dangers ahead through the use of colored flags. And if you want to feel better protected, you can also purchase track insurance for your track day.

When you go to the track for the first time (and for a few more times after that) you are considered a novice driver and will have an assigned instructor riding in the car with you. The instructor is there to guide you by offering information and first-hand knowledge to make your track day safe and fun. First you start at the classroom where the Chief Instructor will cover the bases and explain how the track day will go. After that, you go on-track! By attending a few Driver Education (DE) events you eventually can advance to a stage where you no longer need an in-car instructor, although you still keep learning. If you want to pursue it, eventually, you can also become an instructor yourself! I’ve been an HPDE instructor for many years and every time I do another track day I learn something new about me and/or my car. If your Porsche has lived its life strictly on the roads, it really hasn’t lived at all. So, what are you waiting for?

33

Chesapeake Region

It’s Never Been Tracked (cont’d) Pedro P. Bonilla Contact your local PCA Region and sign up for the next DE event. There’s nothing more enjoyable you can do with your Porsche. Having said all that, I always recommend to anyone wanting to start doing track days, that they should first participate in several autocrosses (AX). They are also a lot of fun! An AX is a timed event, in a closed-access track, usually on a large, not used parking lot, at an unused airport, or other tarmac where a short course is laid out using bright colored cones. One lap at the AX is generally around 60 seconds and it’s just one car at-a-time, on track. The advantage of first running AX courses is that it helps you learn many of the basics that you will need at the track. You will learn exactly where your tires are because you need to come very close to the cones without touching them. This will help you to perfectly make your apexes at the track. The AX is generally run in second gear, so speed is manageable, but it tests the limits of your brakes and tire adhesion. You will learn to listen to your tires, which will tell you when they are reaching their limit. The same is true for your brakes. You will engage them and will quickly learn when the ABS is just about to kick in.

34

Chesapeake Region

It’s Never Been Tracked (cont’d) By knowing these basics when you do your first DE you won’t be overwhelmed with too much information from your instructor which will make your track day a lot more fun and safe. Not sure if these cars can really take the hard driving? I’ll just use my car as an example. It’s a 1998 2.5L Boxster. I started doing DE events as soon as the car finished the break in-period by the Summer of ’98 in St. Louis where I was living at the time. Since then, to date it now just reached 300,000 miles on the odometer and of those, close to 15,000 miles are on the track. I’ve tracked it at Gateway International, Road America, Bristol Motor Speedway, HomesteadMiami Speedway, Palm Beach International (Moroso), Daytona International Speedway, Roebling Road, Road Atlanta, and at my home track and favorite of all, Sebring International Speedway Hope to see you at the AX and the track soon!
