Autocross In Review Words: Greg Hartke, Photos: Jim McKee

Autocross #3 on Saturday June 25th is now in the books and by all accounts we had another successful day of racing. This makes 5 events (AX School, Test & Tune, plus three full racing events) for 2022 with good weather, which I would deem to be a record the Potomac Chapter envies. POT has had 4 events (AX School plus three full racing events) and their AX#2 was contested in a deluge, followed by AX#3 for which it rained during setup and the first heat. They also had all kinds of interesting equipment problems for their AX#3 because they didn’t dry things out after the deluge of AX#2. As an interested participant and POT AX Committee member, I was thinking about what I would do if it rained like that during a CHS AX event and what I would have to do to dry things out. The good news is that now I know what happens if you don’t do anything. ;) I arrived at Prince George’s Stadium about 4:50 or 4:55 AM and AX Co-chair Brad Martinez was already there, rarin’ to go. OK, no one is rarin’ to go at that hour, but you get the idea. In fact, Brad had been out ‘til late (and I mean really late) with clients and he was one hurtin’ puppy that morning. Good thing he’s young. ;) John Cho arrived shortly after us and Mark Hubley shortly after John with the trailer of AX supplies. As we started to get things together, it was still sufficiently dark that I could enjoy the sight of Venus, Jupiter, and Mars in the morning sky and the International Space Station even passed by nearly directly overhead. Maybe I should have waved. ;) Mark drove the truck around while Brad and John dropped the cones on the lot along the course, then Mark went home to get his car while Brad and John assembled the course. Pinto Soin arrived around 5:30 and he and I got everything else set up in good order. I can’t even begin to tell you how great it is to have the mighty Pinto helping me in the morning at these events. At our previous two AX events, the hotspot was not working and we wound up using CHS Registrar Meilyng WigneyBurmaka’s personal cell phone as a hotspot, so we enlisted the aid of Treasurer Andy Powell, who worked with Tmobile to get that little problem straightened out and the hotspot worked fine this time. Phew! ‘Bout time. Funny thing, though. Everything was working fine for a while, but eventually we lost range on the iPads we use for the Starter to queue cars and also for the announcer. That caused some hiccups, but we worked around the problem (of course), though now that needs to be straightened out. Meilyng will be looking into that. There’s always something. ;)

Brad was not only about dead on his feet after very little sleep, he had to be in his DC office at 9:00 AM for a client meeting (likely to last all day), so he had to leave at 7:00. I don’t know how he survived that day, but I’ve heard from him since then, so I know he did. ;) When Brad left, the course was almost complete and John finished putting it together with Pinto’s help. With the course assembled (see the diagram below), it was time for John and me to go out and do the safety runs, always an important step because there’s always something that needs adjusting. After running the course several times, we made some minor tweaks, but we also discovered that the finish sequence was all wrong and had to be rebuilt. We fiddled with it and John eventually came up with the winning combination that I thought made for a good finish. Good job, John! Took a while for us to get it right, but in the end, we

12

Chesapeake Region

Autocross (cont’d) were able to open the course to walking right on schedule. This course had a double skidpad for an opening sequence (which is a bit unusual, but also pretty fun) and these skidpads were smallish, which made it a bit of a challenge to get it right. Enter those small skidpads too fast and you wind up pushing wide. We all know what understeer does to your times (and tires), so it required maybe a touch of exploration to get it right. My technique was to get it as tight as possible and (as early as possible) roll in just enough throttle to make the tires protest continuously (and loudly) as I went around the skidpad. It’s much easier to get the entry and speed right on a larger skidpad, but it was a lot more fun than I expected on these smaller skidpads. Interestingly, the small radius of these skidpads resulted in really high lateral g’s. I thought it turned out to be a really great feature of Meilyng’s course design. We also discovered in the safety runs that there was a bit of an undulation in the surface at the exit from the first channel that caused the wheels to unload just as you needed to brake really hard for the next corner. Meilyng wanted me to change a couple of cones so that that would not be a factor, but I was adamant about leaving it the way it was. It was a challenge. If you didn’t recognize it was there, you weren’t able to slow down as expected (if you had ABS, you’d lock up unexpectedly) and you wound up entering the next sharp corner too fast, understeer badly, and lose time. The key was to brake a little earlier and aim wide, rotate the car and back-side the cone at the apex, then roll on the power really hard for the first diagonal across the lower portion of the lot. The rear end on my Cayman S was swinging out as I exited the corner (perfectly normal for a Cayman), but that was easily controlled. I’m betting the 911’s with their rear weight bias could roll it on even more aggressively and not have the rear end kick around like mine did. It was perfectly safe having that undulation in play and represented a challenge to the driver to figure out how to do it right. I thought it was fun and if you didn’t think so when you drove it, just blame me for being diabolical. ;)

13

Chesapeake Region

Autocross (cont’d) Words: Greg Hartke, Photos: Jim McKee I sent the drivers out for their course walk right on time (at 8:30), but the reality is that we need to get them out a little earlier than that if we want to get through the driver’s meeting and novice course walk (done that day by none other than Slava Burmaka in Brad’s absence) and still get the first car off at 9:30. It was fine, though. We actually had first car off at 9:45, which was perfectly satisfactory. We were fortunate because, while the day was warm, it wasn’t blistering hot like it can be this time of year and there was even a little breeze with only moderate humidity. Even

so, we went through 128 lbs of ice keeping the bottled water cool so that the participants could stay hydrated. That sounds like a lot of ice, and it is. I bought 32 pounds of ice the previous evening, storing it in a cooler, then prevailed upon Marilyn to bring it to PGS in the morning for me. She then went out multiple times during the day to replenish the ice to keep the drinks cool. Registration for this one was interesting. Our registration hit the cap (65) with days to spare and even had a waitlist, then we thrashed around with late cancellations (real life understandably intervenes at times) and more late registrations. In the end, we wound up at 63, so everyone who was on the waitlist got in. We also had 5 Taste of Autocross participants, which is always fun. In the end, we had more no-shows than usual, so we actually only had 54 drivers, which is unusually small. You know what that means, though: extra racing time. ;) As I said previously, the first car went off at 9:45 and I was, as always, keeping my eye on the pace. It didn’t take long (3 runs) to see that we were going to be able to do 7 runs and still get everyone done at a good time. So I made the call for 7, and that’s when our iPad problems cropped up, of course. That stretched out the first heat and with 30 drivers in that heat, it finished at 11:50. I thought that would still be OK and as it turned out, it was more than OK. We only had 24 drivers in the second heat and it absolutely flew by. In fact, I was having a good time in gride bantering with the Grid Master in the second heat, who was (correctly and entertainingly) harassing us mightily to be ready when we were needed. The Starter was getting cars off at a great pace and the Grid Master did a great job keeping us moving. That’s what it takes! We started the second heat at 12:07 (a very decent turnaround time between heats – good job by the participants!) and finished at 1:25. Wow! That was great! We really like to get lots of racing for the participants and still finish up at a decent time so that they have time for other activities with family and friends in the afternoon. I’m happy to say we did that in spades for AX#3.

Fastest among the Porsches and winner of Class S5 (2nd overall) was Scott B. at 42.968 sec. Second place and winner of S4 (6th overall) was Mark H. with 43.641 sec, followed closely by Slava B. who won Class I with 43.719 sec (7th overall). Fourth place went to Phong N., fastest in Class P3 (10th overall) with 44.331 sec. Fifth place and second in Class I (12th

14

Chesapeake Region

Autocross (cont’d) Words: Greg Hartke, Photos: Jim McKee overall) went to Meilyng B. with 44.394 sec. CHS AX participants are da bomb! They provide so much help getting all the equipment gathered and ready to go in the trailer that we were packed and ready to go in no time at all. As I said, we finished at 1:25 and by 2:00, we had everything packed and the trailer locked and ready to go. That is so-o-o-o-o impressive! Thanks to everyone for helping out. Believe me, those of us who run the event are beat by the end and really appreciate the help.

It’s worth mentioning that every time I set up for an AX event, I’m astounded by how well the trailer (of all things) is laid out. IIRC, that was done something like 5 years ago or so by my predecessor, Pat Walker, and the design was executed by Pat and others. Here’s what I know: I couldn’t have done half the job they did. You have to see all the details (networking, power, and storage) to understand, but take my word for it. CHS was really lucky to have had Pat and friends to do the job when the trailer was upgraded. AX#4 will be hot on the heels of AX#3 and is scheduled for Saturday July 9th at Prince George’s Stadium in Bowie, MD. As I write this, the registration is filled, but we still have plenty of racing scheduled for August, September, and October, so get registered to race if you’re looking for some real action. Again, if you think you have an interest in AX, or even if you’re just curious to see what it’s like, come out and register for Taste of Autocross, for which you’ll receive multiple runs on the course riding with an instructor. We had 5 ToA passengers at AX#3 and there’s nothing like it to whet your appetite. Come and see!

Looking forward to seeing you soon at the races! Greg Hartke

Southern Anne Arundel County Garage Kriechen Jim Earlbeck & Randy Richter

On June 4th an enthusiastic group of tech heads made the trip to Southern Anne Arundel County for a wonderful garage visitation. After a scenic drive we arrived at a wonderful bucolic setting for the garage visitation. The owners then graciously welcomed everyone with cold drinks, hot coffee and delicious pastries. Each Garage Kriechen is a unique experience. It is a view into how the owner lives the automotive lifestyle and what they value. Our host, being an architect, brought a fascinating and educational point of view to this event. He detailed the process of working with Anne Arundel County zoning and inspection. This was not your normal stick constructed building. The unique construction methods were highlighted in a manner that everyone could grasp. The building was constructed in Pennsylvania by Amish craftsmen and transported to the site. It came in basically two pieces each with the roof halves folded down. The builders joined the building, raised the roof, and installed siding and electric. This unique construction technique resulted in rapid construction, rugged design, lower cost, and confusion to the County’s building inspectors. Sometimes the confusion wasn’t worth the time to mount the argument. An example of that was the double placement of the collar ties. It seems that buying the cars to put in the garage is sometimes the easy part. Once the building was erected the owner added two lifts and numerous pieces of memorabilia. Artwork filled the walls. The worktables were clean and highly organized. If you have ever seen photos of a hospital operating room you can form the mental picture of this garage’s tools all being laid out like the precision instruments that they are. Those tools are used extensively. Our host told the story of his acquisition of a 356 cabriolet that came with an ultra-rare sunroof hard top. Seeing that top is the garage is probably the only chance that you will ever have to see one. The host personally restored the car, and you can find several articles in Patter (2021 Issues, see links below) that follow his efforts. It turned out stunning! Ar ticle: And So It Began...356 - Issuu Article: And So It Began...356C Pt 2. - Issuu Article: And So It Began...356C Pt 3. - Issuu And So It Began 356 Restoration part 4. - Issuu And So...it finished (cont’d) - Issuu

The owner then announced that there would be a contest, which he funded the giveaway of a Chesapeake region jacket, grill badge and name badge. These were given away to the folks who provided

Member Profile: Anthony & Mariel Brown James B. Beavan III Member Names & Join Date: Anthony Brown (2007) and my wife Mariel Brown (2020) Current Cars, Previous Cars: 2018 GT3, 2011 GT3RS, 2009 Cayman race car and 1992 500E (Porsche type 2758) Previous cars include a 2008 997.1 Turbo, a 2016 Boxster Spyder and an earlier 2009 Cayman race car that, from pole, I managed to destroy at a PCA Club Race at Watkins Glen.

Have you served on any Regional or National committees: Not yet for PCA. But I serve as Co-Chief Instructor for Audi Club NEQ Chapter and serve on that club’s national performance driving education committee. What encouraged you to join the Porsche Club of America: I joined in 2007 when I ordered my first Porsche, a Meteor Gray 997.1 Turbo. I had already done some DE events with PCA prior to that so already knew how great the club was. I was living in Manhattan at the time and had started doing DE in 2004.

24

Brown (cont’d)

When it came time to buy a vehicle, what made you choose your Porsche and is this your first Porsche (if not please detail prior Porsche's): I’ve always loved Porsches and it remains a special experience whenever I drive one. I think it was probably the door sound of an air cooled 911 that made me think “someday I’d love one of these”. I’ve had great experiences with lots of different front, rear and mid-engine cars. I was in a position in 2007 to order my first Porsche. I put 38k miles and did maybe 80 track days on that car. I turned it back to Porsche at the end of the lease with GMG springs, dog bones, control arm bushings and sways (sorry Porsche!). Should have kept that one… What are your favorite Regional &/or National events:

I started PCA Club Racing in 2016 in a Cayman built by DeMan Motorsports and prepared for Stock G class. Since then, I’ve done Club Races at Sebring, VIR, Watkins Glen, Lime Rock, Monticello, NJMP and Summit Point supported by SpeedSport in Danbury, Connecticut. Ask anyone who club races and they’ll tell you it’s highly addictive. What is your favorite PCA memory: Winning overall the Enduro at the Summit Point club race in 2018.

James B. Beavan III The conditions were preposterously bad. Rain, standing water, total mess. A 2.9 liter Cayman on Hoosier rain tires is just a blast given it is so forgiving and doesn’t have a ton of power. It was a lot of fun and I keep the wristband in my daily driver as a reminder.

What advice about PCA or Chesapeake would you give to new members:

I can’t tell people strongly enough to give DE or AutoX a try. Have no fear about being the newbie and being clueless. We were all there. Many of my best friends are folks I met almost 20 years ago as a novice student in DE. My wife Mariel hasn’t done a DE yet and I’m excited to get her involved. She’s an equestrian so many of the skills around vision and weight transfer should translate well. If money was no object, what Porsche would you love to own and why: I’d like a narrow body 993. If I’m being picky, I’d like a manual C4 Cab in Polar Silver with Chestnut Brown. I’d also love an early G car and a 930. Mariel would love a Macan GTS.

Dawe’s Motorsports Development

Randy Richter

The current June issue of Panorama has an excellent article on the “The Magician” who is Peter Dawe. During the recent Pocono’s Parade there was a suggested side trip to the gearhead shrine that is Dawe’s Motorsports Development. On Tuesday of Parade, Peter had kindly opened his shop and provided lunch to attendees. Arriving there I was quite frankly dismayed at the paucity of visitors. In fact, only one other person was visiting at the time. I will not cover anything in the article as that is an excellent read. Rather, I will provide an anecdote or two from my visit and some additional pictures. After entering the facility, I walked among the various cars and took some photographs. The shop is overloaded with engines, cars, parts, parts, and more parts. In fact, speaking with a lady who was greeting visitors, I was informed that Peter had a whole huge warehouse off site full of historic parts, potential project cars and rare unobtanium. Finally, after passing through several rooms Peter was sitting on a stool in front of parts for a 962 engine. More on that later. Peter was in discussion with the other visitor to the shop, so I headed to the wall of historic pictures. Seeing those pictures brought me into my own private way back machine as I recognized many of the venues and the cars. After Peter finished speaking to the other visitor, I went over to thank him for opening his shop. I allowed how the pictures reminded me of seeing those historic cars run back in the day. Specifically, I mentioned to Peter, my stint as a press photographer at Texas World Speedway and Riverside. He allowed how our paths probably crossed as of course he was at those races working as a mechanic. Finally, I mentioned the 962 engine parts in front of him. He could tell I was fascinated that such parts still existed. He very studiously set my assumption to rights when he mentioned that the only way to have these parts is to manufacture them. I left the shop amazed and impressed that this outpost on back street in Stroudsburg Pennsylvania held such an amazing amount of talent and such a vast storehouse of Porsche knowledge.

Crab Feast: August 27th Join us for the Region’s Traditional Crab Feast at Kemptown Park on August 27th

For the 16th consecutive year (not counting 2020’s canceled event), the Chesapeake Region PCA Crab Feast will be held at Kemptown Park in Monrovia, MD on Saturday, August 27th- rain or shine! Bring your Porsche and sense of humor to the Feast for a non-competitive car show where cleanliness and condition do not matter. Our tongue and cheek awards to the winners of the Region’s annual picnic are always fun, unpredictable, and will be based on your Porsche’s unique curb appeal. (Think it of as a midsummer’s version of the Bob and Manny Show without presents.) Trophies and door prizes are compliments of Porsche of Silver Spring! As with every Crab Feast past, it is the food and venue that keeps Chesapeake Region members coming back for more. There will be tons of crab, shrimp, burgers, and dogs that the Region will provide - not to mention tables of side dishes and desserts that you will provide. Lighthouse Seafood of New Market will once again be steaming our crabs and jumbo shrimp. We’ll have two pavilions at Kemptown Park, with reserved parking, and we have been assured the lovely breezes that have graced the event in the past will be returning for the 16th repeat of this event! A large playground will keep your young Porsche enthusiasts occupied and a real, honest-to-goodness bathroom with running water will appeal to the most persnickety of crab feast clean freaks. Think fun family outing! This year’s event is once again scheduled on its traditional date the weekend before Labor Day. And the time is moved back as well to allow us to enjoy the cooler early evening air and breezes. We’ll start at 3:00 PM and end at 7:00 PM. Registration opens August 1st. We will set registration costs by that date based upon market price for crab and shrimp. As always, the Crab Feast is free for children 12 and under. To register, click on www.clubregistration.net (Account is required). On the main page, use the "Event Search" function to find the Crab Feast event by selecting "Chesapeake Region" and "Social" for the Region and Event Type. Please be sure to specify what salad, dessert, or dish you will bring to the event. Look for an eblast with reminders, updated details, and fees when the time comes! For registration questions, email Ellen at ebeck944@comcast.net See everyone at Kemptown Park on Saturday, 27 August!

LATEST PORSCHES AT 66th PORSCHE PARADE

Aniano Arao

Kalahari Resort in the Poconos, PA – June 12 -18, 2022 In a world premiere at the 2022 Porsche Parade, Porsche unveiled its latest “unobtainium,” the 2023 911 Carrera GTS America. Held at the Kalahari Resort in Pennsylvania's Pocono Mountains, the Porsche Club of America's 66th annual convention was also the occasion for the in-the-metal introduction to U.S. enthusiasts of two other elusive Porsche models: the virtually unobtainable 2023 911 Sport Classic and the hard-to-get 2023 718 Cayman GT4 RS. Only 115 units of the Azure Blue Carrera GTS America will be built -- 100 for the U.S. and 15 for Canada. As usual, the demand for this special edition will far exceed the supply, so only a small fraction of Porsche VIPs will have any chance of getting one.

Scheduled for delivery later this year, the 2023 Porsche 911 GTS America starts at $186,370 in the U.S. It commemorates the 70th anniversary of the 356 America Roadster, of which only 16 examples were made. Here is a link to more information about the 2023 version: https://newsroom.porsche.com/en/2022/ products/porsche-911-carrera-gts-cabriolet-america-edition-28681.html .

The new Porsche 911 Sport Classic, starting at $272,300 in the U.S., is based on the all-wheel-drive and PDKonly 911 Turbo, but comes with rear-wheel-drive and is equipped with a manual transmission. Shown here in Sport Grey Metallic, the car will be available in three other colors, plus “paint to sample.” For more information, click this link: https://www.porsche.com/usa/models/911/911-sport-classic/911-sport-classic/ .

Car & Driver says this long-awaited car ditches the Cayman Complex. It notes that the Cayman “has long been overshadowed by the 911 to keep the brand’s hierarchy in check.” But with the new GT4 RS, it adds, “Porsche has finally installed the 911 GT3’s engine in the 718 and created the best sendoff to internal combustion we’ve seen yet.” In its testing, Car and Driver found the top 718 Cayman “as quick as the previous 911 GT3 RS and only 0.1 second off the new GT3." The magazine says the car “reached 60 mph in 2.8 seconds, quicker than any nonTurbo or GT 911, and hit the quarter mile in 11.0 seconds at 126 mph." From Alaska to the 66th Porsche Parade

Aniano Arao

PCA Member Drove 9,400 Miles to and From the Poconos Mike Holtzclaw attended his 17th Porsche Parade this June. And just as he had done 16 times previously, he drove his 1985 911 all the way from his home in Anchorage, Alaska, to PCA’s annual convention. He covered about 4,700 miles to reach the Poconos in Pennsylvania, spending seven days doing so. After a week in the Keystone State, he drove roughly another 4,700 miles to get back home, again doing so in seven days of spirited driving, arriving at 8:45 pm on June 26.

I first heard about Mike while watching a TV documentary about Porsche owners sometime around 2012 or 2013. Though I saw him at the 2015 Porsche Parade in French Lick, Indiana, I didn’t get a chance to meet him until I saw him at this year’s Parade cleaning his car at about 11 pm outside the Kalahari Resort’s convention center. It didn’t take me long to recognize Mike and his 911. The former president of PCA Alaska told me that he and a few friends had driven together from Anchorage to attend the gathering in the Poconos.

48

Chesapeake Region

In a 2010 interview, Mike told Andrew Granieri of PorschePurists that he sticks to back roads every time he makes the long trek to a Porsche Parade. “You get to see things, smell things, hear things that you don’t get to experience on a highway,” he said. While driving to the 2010 Parade in St. Charles, IL, he added, “I loved every minute I spent behind the wheel. In every state I drove through there was something so beautiful or spectacular to see that I’d have to stop and pull out my iPhone to take a picture.” Why doesn’t he fly to the Parade venues? “It’s easy for me to say that these beautiful cars and these wonderful people here at the Parade are the reasons why I come every year now, but it’s really the drive that drives me,” he explained. Notably, it is not only the staggering odyssey that he undertakes every year that has made Mike famous in the Porsche community. He is also remembered as the guy who wraps his Guards Red 911 completely in blue painter’s tape to protect it from the elements while in transit, including bugs.

Among the road-trip tips Mike shared with Granieri, this one stood out: “Here’s a random tip you can tell your readers that a cop told me: Have you ever been caught in a huge downpour, one so bad you can’t see anything in front of you? Polarized glasses. It cuts through the rain and you can see well enough to drive.” Asked what he thought about “Garage Queen” Porsche owners, Mike said: “You know, first and foremost, I have to say I have no problem with someone who wants to purchase a car like the Porsches we’ve seen this weekend and just keep them in perfect condition, as a museum piece or whatever.” However, he added: “You want my opinion? You gotta let it go once in a while! I think these cars are like books. Each one has a vivid story to it that’s found in a new corner or a daily drive. I respect the folks who keep the cars permanently on display, but I almost feel sorry for them because it’s like they’re missing out on the opportunity to live in the story of their car! If you don’t drive these cars the way they were made to be driven, you’re not reading the whole story. As I drive my 911 more and more, there’s almost a bond you get with the car. You get to know it; how it works, when it feels best. You get to know its story because you’re a part of [the story].”

Wow! This is my kind of car guy. To read the rest of this interesting interview, click this link: https://flatsixes.com/porsche-culture/porscheclub-of-america/interview-mike-holtzclaw/ .

Tech Event: RPR Automotive By Moose & Squirrel Join us on July 30th at RPR Automotive to hear tuning & dyno guru John Behe speak on just some of the information he has gathered in over 50 years of work. John is an expert in tuning and is known for fixing modified cars that have had nothing but problems. He is equally adept at computerized systems as well as carbureted engines. Among the other subjects John will speak on is a standalone engine management solution that's plug and play for 964, 993, and 951. He uses this system on those vehicles that are going to operate outside the normal parameters of the factory ECU. He can tune the stock ECU for just about any mods. To this end he created a system he could use that didn't need a complicated wiring job and went plug and play to use the factory wiring harness. Keep an eye open for the registration announcement. We will change up the procedure slightly and open registration as soon as the formal announcement is

made. Do not be tardy as the event will be limited to forty participants.

PCA Juniors

What is the PCA Juniors program? ✓ PCA Juniors is a program for Porsche enthusiasts under

age 18. ✓ Participants must be registered by an active PCA mem-

ber. ✓ It’s not just the cars… and now it’s not just the grown-

ups! ✓ With our new PCA Juniors program, PCA is about the kids too!

The PCA Juniors program has been created so kids can enjoy PCA events, learn about Porsches and build the enthusiasm that runs through all of the Porsche Club of America. Who is eligible? Any child under age 18 who is registered by a current PCA member can participate in the program.

(Note: This is not a PCA Membership.) What will the child receive? PCA Juniors will receive a welcome package that includes an ageappropriate gift and PCA Juniors ID badge. We look forward to developing the program and its features over time. What does it cost to register? It’s FREE! Participants must be registered by an active PCA member, and there is no cost to join!
