Editors Message: Wow, did summer arrive fast and hard, good thing most of us have air conditioning in our cars. I’ll still be driving with my top down when the opportunity arises. I always have a quality sunscreen applied before any time in the sun and make sure to clean my hands before driving so not to damage anything in the car as lotions/oils/sunscreens can and will do to your leather, steering wheel, buttons etc.

As you can see above our busy summer season is in full swing with something for everyone. If you have an idea for an event or want to join a committee, just reach out to Steve or Mark. Even better, introduce yourself at an event and we’ll help you find the right role for your schedule and interests.

Have an article idea, member profile, for sale ad or business ad, shoot me an email editor@pcachs.org to get started.

Best Regards,

James B Beavan III

Presidents Message

’s Message July 2024

I am thrilled our Editor, James Beavan, was awarded Second Place in this year’s annual contest at Porsche Parade in Birmingham. Outstanding job James! Thank you for your time and commitment to publish an award-winning publication.

Continuing with Parade, Chesapeake member, Brenda Johnson, was the winner of a Princess Cruise. Dan Zadra and his son Lucas both came in first place in Remote Control racing. Dan also won first place in the Mixed Media arts competition. Scott Johnson placed 2nd in the Photography category and also 2nd in his Concours class. Jonathan Silverman placed 1st in his Concours class. Grant Larson placed 2nd in his Concours class and Jim Earlbeck placed 4th. Members placing in the AX events were Mark M, Lynn S, Tom D, Lisa G (2nd) Scott J, Richard C. Congratulations to all the members who took home awards. To see the complete Parade results go to porscheparade.org/Main Menu/ Parade Results.

Our premier event of the year, the 55th annual Chesapeake Challenge will take place on September 15th at the beautiful Circle D Farm in Woodbine. This all day event will include concours, a gimmick rally, and tech quiz competitions as well as continental breakfast, lunch and an awards dinner. Registration is now open. Capacity is capped at 100. During the morning Concours event we will wel-

come PCA members and their guests to view the cars and socialize for a $5 registration fee.

Our tours have been a big hit this year and the upcoming Solomon’s Island tour was sold out weeks ago and has a waiting list which we hope to clear. We also have a very special family friendly rally coming up on Aug 3rd, the Speed Limit Sign Rally, designed and developed in partnership with the Potomac Region. This tour is through the northern Baltimore County region and finishes at the Inverness Brewery where the winners will be announced and we can enjoy a cold beer with our lunch.

Marsha and I checked out the historic Belmont Manor for their first of the Summer outdoor movie night series and had a wonderful evening. We created an event in MotorsportReg if you and your family would like to join us for the next movie on July 18th featuring the Goonies.

New to the calendar are two events hosted by our Concours committee, Paul, Phil and Dan. The first is a Concours judges training class to be held at Porsche Silver Spring. We are always in need of judges for CC55. The second is a tutorial for preparing your car for Concours.

We had nearly 100 members attend the New Member Party hosted by Porsche Hunt Valley and Steve Postol, General Manager. I was thrilled to welcome two dozen new members, for many it was their first PCA event. A big thanks to our members who came out on a Saturday morning to welcome our new members and our Membership Chair, Rob Carter, for organizing and coordinating this outstanding event. It’s not just the cars, it’s the people.

There are many opportunities to volunteer, make new friends and meet new members. Please consider joining the many volunteers that make our Region fun and exciting. I hope to see you at one of our upcoming events so we can discuss how you can contribute to our successes.

Thanks to all of you for making Chesapeake Region so enjoyable! It is the cars that bring us together, but it is the people that make it special.

Steve

Join us for the Region’s Traditional Crab Feast at Kemptown Park on August 24th

For the 18th consecutive year, the Chesapeake Region Crab Feast, sponsored by Porsche Silver Spring, will be held at Kemptown Park in Monrovia, MD on Saturday, August 24th- rain or shine! Bring your appetite and your Porsche for a wonderful, relaxing outing with friends and fami-

There will be tons of crab, shrimp, burgers, dogs and drinks that the Region will provide - not to mention tables of side dishes and desserts that you will provide. Lighthouse Seafood of New Market will once again be steaming our crabs and jumbo shrimp. We’ll have two pavilions at Kemptown Park, with reserved parking, and we have been assured the lovely breezes that have graced the event in the past will be returning for the 18th repeat of this event! A large playground will keep your young Porsche enthusiasts occupied and a real, honest-to-goodness bathroom with running water will appeal to the most persnickety of crab feast clean freaks.

One of the fun traditions of the Crab Feast is our non-competitive car show where cleanliness and condition have never mattered for cars to receive the attention of the judges. It’s all tongue and cheek- the awards are always fun and unpredictable, and will be based on your Porsche’s unique curb appeal.

This year’s event is once again scheduled on its traditional date the weekend before Labor Day. We’ll start at 3:00 PM and end at 7:00 PM to enjoy the cooler early evening air and breezes.

Registration opens Monday, August 5th at noon, and closes on August 21st. Registration is $45 for adults, $20 for teens under 18, and as always, the Crab Feast is free for children 12 and under. Please be sure to specify what salad, dessert, or side dish you will bring to the event. Dust off your Crabby Name Badge from prior events, or let us know if you need a new one! Look for an eblast with the registration link, reminders, and details. Thank you to Porsche Silver Spring, our longtime sponsors! For crabby questions J, email Ellen at ebeck944@comcast.net See everyone at Kemptown Park on Saturday, 24 August!

June Social Events – July 2024 Patter

Following the Linganore Winery Tour, we had over 50 people descend upon the Linganore picnic grounds for an afternoon Social lunch. Some brought their lunch and others ordered from the food truck. It was a wonderful afternoon. Linganore is a terrific destination …..we will see you again!

We had our monthly dinner social at A Bushel and a Peck restaurant in Ellicott City, 40 members attended. It was a private room in the restaurant with plenty of time to mingle prior to sitting down for our meal.

Following the Mason-Dixon Line Roller-Coaster Tour, we had a social lunch at Wyndridge Farm in Dallastown, PA. We had a great turnout, about 50 people enjoyed a delicious food and craft beers from their on-site brewery. Some lucky members were seated in the beautiful wood beamed barn where the beer is brewed.

Upcoming events:

The July social dinner will be at Fratelli’s in Hampstead. The event is currently sold out but we are working to expand the reservation to clear the waitlist. Chuck Goldsborough has again invited us to a happy hour at Ralph’s Auto Service where we will be able to see beautiful Porsches in varying states of restoration. Thanks for hosting this very popular event again, Chuck.

After the Solomon’s Island Run Tour on July 7th the group will split apart for mini lunch socials in one of the many restaurants in the local area. Currently there are 63 drivers registered for this event designed by Steve Wood, with collaboration by Terrell Williams. We were able to clear the waitlist, so remember if the registration is at capacity, please get on the waitlist as we do our best to invite everyone.

On Thursday July 18 we are trying out a new event – movie night at the historic Belmont Manor. There are plenty of spots open for this event. Hope to see you there.

We hope to see you at our future events! Our dinner socials are generally on the third Tuesday every month. Breakfast socials are the first Saturday of some months.

Tour: PCA returns to the ‘shed!

On Sunday, August 25, the Chesapeake and Potomac Regions are once again combining efforts for an off-road drive around the Frederick City Watershed. The one-hour light off-road tour meanders through gorgeous hills, tall green trees, feathery ferns, clear streams, impressive rock formations, wildlife, and even a stream crossing (weather permitting) in the Frederick Municipal Forest.

The tour starts and ends at Springfield Manor Winery, Brewery and Distillery in Thurmont, MD. The theme of the tour is driving at safe off-road speeds, enjoying the outdoor scenery and experiencing the Porsche Cayenne and Macan off-road ability. The four-door Porsche SUVs also provide opportunities to bring more passengers.

Chesapeake Region

Tour: PCA (cont’

We visited this area back in 2021 with a great off-road drive and fun time at the winery after. The bumpy gravel roads are ideal for keeping our Porsche SUVs safe and scratch-free, while still adventuring where no (non-safari) 911 would dare. This year, the goal is to drive a longer and different route, including a chance to drive through a low-water creek.

Driver’s Meeting: 10:45 AM Departure: First cars off at 11:00 AM

Announcement: Chesapeake Challenge 55

Sponsored by Porsche Hunt Valley

The Chesapeake Region invites you to attend the 55th Annual Chesapeake Challenge! This event has something for EVERY Porsche driver and enthusiast. People get together to look at and show their Porsches while having a fun-filled day of activities, good food, and great company! During the morning Concours event we will welcome PCA members and their guests to view the cars and socialize for a $5 registration fee.

For over 50 years, Chesapeake Region has invited its members and friends to celebrate the annual Chesapeake Challenge – the oldest running multi-event weekend in PCA history. The Challenge quickly became popular among Mid-Atlantic owners, and attendance grew to well over a hundred cars in the ensuing years. The Challenge has moved around Maryland throughout its history.

The 55th Chesapeake Challenge - Sunday, September 15th

This year’s event will be held entirely at Circle D Farm in Woodbine, Maryland. In 1953 Circle D Farm was purchased by the Dowd family and operated as a dairy farm. The family continued to maintain the herd of over 100 cows and milling operations for several years. In 1979 a portion of the land was developed into a summer camp, and eventually the family began to offer corporate events and weddings.

There will be a continental breakfast (fruit, donuts and coffee) in the morning.

CONCOURS - The day will open with a Concours d’Elegance with cars grouped into Full Concours, Street/Prepared Concours, and Display Only. In addition to the standard class awards, Full Concours cars will compete for the coveted Knowlton P. Long / Lufthansa Trophy, while Street/Prepared cars will compete for the Chesapeake Cup award. All Concours cars, including the Display Class, will compete for People’s Choice award.

LUNCH – A picnic lunch will be served in the Circle D picnic area.

GIMMICK RALLY - After lunch, a Gimmick Rally will be held featuring a scenic and delightful route created by Rich Ehrlich, made even more enjoyable and satisfying by clever gimmicks. Individual 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place trophies will be awarded to the top-performing drivers and navigators.

TECH QUIZ - Upon your return, we will participate in a Tech quiz prepared by our illustrious Tech

Chesapeake Region

CC55 (cont’d)

Team, testing your Porsche knowledge. The quiz is intended to be FUN and a learning experience. It is multiple choice, so anyone is likely to win! All attendees are encouraged to participate in the Tech Quiz. Even the best multiple-choice guessers have been known to win a trophy or two!

DINNER - The final event of the day is the Awards Dinner. Following dinner, we will have the awards ceremony.

SILENT AUCTION - There will be a silent auction of Porsche / car enthusiast items held throughout the day to raise money for Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter (BARCS). When you register please sign up to donate items to be auctioned off the charity. Be ready to bid on the many terrific items available at the auction table to support BARCS!

Knowlton P. Long / Lufthansa Award - For the attendee that scores the best in all three events, Full Concours, Gimmick Rally, and Tech Quiz, they will be awarded the coveted Knowlton P. Long Award. Their name will be placed on the trophy, and they will receive an elite take-home trophy in honor of their accomplishment!

Chesapeake Cup Award - For the attendee that scores the best in all three events, Street/ Prepared Concours, Gimmick Rally, and Tech Quiz, they will be awarded the Chesapeake Cup Award. They will receive a take-home trophy in honor of their accomplishment! So come and join us for a fun-filled day of Porsches and people. Concours Judging School: August 10th

This seminar serves as training for PCA members who will judge concours cars at the Chesapeake Challenge. It is highly recommended that all potential judges, and experienced judges, attend this seminar. Attendance is optional if you attended last year's training event.

In this seminar you will learn:

How to correctly fill out a score sheet and what notes you should be making on it

How our points system works for scoring cars

How to be consistent in your evaluation of concours cars

In scoring cars for Chesapeake Challenge, we focus on preparation, cleanliness, and overall condition. We do not penalize non-originality or imperfections such as stone chips.

All cars start with a score of 300 points. Individual points are deducted for areas that are deemed ill-prepared. All deductions will be in whole points. Actual score sheets will be shared with concours entrants upon request.

As in previous events, we will be making use of age points. Cars are allotted additional points according to their relative age withing their class.

Our goal with this judging school is to inform all judges of our rules, and provide training that will help the judging teams be consistent in scoring cars.

WHEN and WHERE

When: Saturday, August 10, 2024

Where: Porsche Silver Spring, 3131 Automobile Blvd, Silver Spring, MD 20904 Start time: 11:00 am End time: 2:00 pm

PCA at the Belmont Blockbusters 2024

Can you possibly imagine a better location for watching a blockbuster movie, seeing your Porsche family of friends and showing off your Porsche than on historic grounds, behind a historic mansion, and under the stars? Let’s drive our Porsches and line them up for a People’s Choice competition before the movie starts. This event is open to the public, our Porsche's will have a section of the parking lot in the front to display our cars.

The large movie screen is set up behind the Manor house, there is plenty of space to set up lawn chairs or to spread out on a blanket. All visitors are encouraged to arrive early to enjoy the gardensthere is plenty of parking, super clean restrooms, food trucks, frogs, manicured lawns, fireflies and stars!

Four more events are planned this summer (third Thursdays):

July 18th - The Goonies

August 15th - TBD

September 19th - Alladin or Princess Bride

October 17th – Halloween themed

The Belmont Blockbusters Summer Movie Nights is a free event sponsored by Howard County. There is no admission to enter the park, or the lawn to watch a summer movie. Even the ambiance of lighting provided by charming fireflies is complimentary.

The screenings start at sundown, but you may arrive early to enjoy the gardens and a picnic with family and friends. Do bring bug spray, however, it is outdoors with some standing water nearby! If you don’t bring your own food and beverages there are two food trucks featuring burgers, hotdogs, sodas, water, and various snacks for sale until 8:30.

Mason-Dixon Line Roller-Coaster Tour

The “Mason-Dixon Line Roller-Coaster Tour” was the seventh driving event of PCA Chesapeake’s Tour and Rally Committee in 2024. This 90-minute driving tour took participants through many scenic and delightful roads in northern Baltimore County and southern York County on June 23.

Former executive vice president, former Tour and Rally chair and guest tour master Steve Graham took fellow PCA members on an awesome route, as usual. It started in Sparks Glencoe, MD, and ended at Wyndridge Farm in Dallastown, PA, where we all had a hearty lunch.

A total of 39 people in 23 cars attended this event. I divided the cars into three groups, which were led by the following couples:

(1) Steve and Janice Graham; (2) Rob (membership chair) and Grace Carter; and (3) Steve (president) and Marsha Buss.

Our thanks go to them for volunteering to lead, to chief photographer Jim McKee for taking our group photo, and to those who volunteered to serve as group sweepers, namely:

(1) Mark (vice president) and Dawn Miller, as well as (2) Kip and Megan Lusby. (3) I served as the overall sweeper and launch director.

Here are some photos from this memorable summer tour, which the attendees said they enjoyed.

Warped!

First of all, Full Disclosure. I have a shop that specializes in the restoration of warped and delaminated Porsche panels.

But that’s not the point. I want to share with you many of the things that I’ve learned about this issue so, if/when you have it, it’ll save you time and money, especially the latter.

What is it? People refer to it as warped door panels and/or delaminating door panels, and that’s a fair description of the problem.

Which cars are susceptible? All Carrera models manufactured after 2012 (991 and 992), all Boxster and Cayman models manufactured after 2013 (981 and 718). To a lesser extent, we have also seen some Cayenne and Macans suffer the same fate.

Why does it happen and why is it so common? Don’t blame Porsche, this one wasn’t their fault! At the turn of this century German worker safety regulations (TRGS 610) required that solvent-based adhesives for floor coverings (carpets mostly) had to be changed to water-based dispersions to improve indoor air quality by the reduction of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC).

Then in 2010 it was mandated that German auto makers could no longer use solvent-based adhesives anywhere in the cabin of their vehicles and the new regulation had them switch immediately (2011) to water-based ones.

But the door panels for the new upcoming models (991/992 and 981/718) were already being produced and the materials and fabrication procedures required the very specialized adhesives they were using. Nevertheless they had to switch. Needless to say, the water-based adhesive is not the right one for those panels.

Exactly, what happens? With age (6+ years), ambient heat and humidity, the water-based adhesives deteriorate and the “skin” of the door panel starts to separate (delaminate) from the door panel’s plastic frame. It generally becomes obvious at the top rear portion of the panel (where the endcap is located). This portion, which must allow the airbag to deploy in case of a side impact, is perforated from the factory so it can tear if the airbag inflates.

But as the “skin” becomes detached, it looses structural integrity and starts to tear with the expansion and contraction of daily temperature swings. Once this happens the rest of the panel quick-

ly starts to come off its base and bows upwards (warping) along the top edge. With the skin off the base, the plastic base can and will warp (deform) with just the heat of the sun on a clear day.

Very unsightly on such beautiful cars. At this time the owner generally calls the dealer to inquire whether this is an issue covered under warranty. After 4 years the answer is “no, it is not”.

How much to repair them? The answer from the dealership is not what any owner wants to hear: “We do not repair them, we only replace them and the cost per panel varies between $1,400 and $2,400” give or take a few bucks (plus labor). To make matters worse, the panels are replaced with OEM ones that will suffer the exact same fate in another half dozen years or so.

So the owner starts to think, heck with just a little glue, I’d better make that a strong glue or maybe even epoxy, I can fix that and save all that money. My recommendation: After having dealt with the aftermath of hundreds of botched DIY jobs, please don’t do it. Don’t do it because the foam that backs the leather or leatherette is very sensitive to most adhesives and can deteriorate to the point where it can’t be restored.

Also when DIY’ers see the detached perforated plastic, the logical reaction is to lather on a layer or two of the strongest epoxy they can find so it’ll hold. Well, that’s not good either, because the reason it’s perforated is so that it can allow the Airbag to save a life. If it’s epoxied in place there will be issues with the airbag in case it has to deploy.

How is it repaired? We developed our own procedures and tested multiple adhesives throughout many years and hundreds of panels.

We found out that the temperature inside a dark colored door, parked for just 90 minutes in full sun, can reach upwards of 220 ºF, which makes most adhesives gooey and useless, so a specialized high-temp adhesive was sourced. But the adhesive

Chesapeake Region

Warped! (cont’d)

should not damage the delicate inner foam and that was another hurdle. Also, the plastic material used on the panel’s base de-gasses in a way that negatively affects adhesion, so a primer and an adhesion promoter was also sourced.

The perforated part that tears also needs to be addressed. It has to be secured in a way that holds it in place permanently with the exception of a possible Airbag deployment when it needs to let the panel fold downwards so the Airbag can do its job.

Finally, the warping of the panel’s substrate needs to be corrected to a very specific shape to fit the slightly curved contour of the door. This is done by warming up the panel and placing it in a custom jig overnight. This final process does two things; it cures the high-temp adhesives and it restores the original shape of the panel so it fits and looks like new again.

By the way, we don’t use water-based adhesives so our repairs are permanent. So go, check you door panels and catch them when the delamination is just starting. By the way, when one of them starts to delaminate, the other side has probably also started as well.

May 2024 had a sell-through rate of 71% out of 608 Porsches offered at auction for a total dollar volume of $32,092,618 compared to 70%, 585, and $31,309,017 the previous year. And while May’s metrics all beat May of 2023’s, this month was all about “what could have been,” especially at the top end of the market.

For cars that could have potentially crested the million-dollar mark, only one of the nine $1m cars sold, and it sold at a final bid of $925,000, which was not quite on the money. That car was a 1992 911 Carrera 2 Coupe Reimagined by Singer. Known as the “San Diego” commission, the car was finished in Blue with Pale Blue stripes and Red Porsche script on the side and featured a beautiful Red leather interior. Out back, this Singer had a 3.8-liter Cosworth developed engine, which was the culprit, as recently it takes a 4.0-liter engine to get Singers up past the million-dollar mark.

Other million-dollar-potential sales included not one, but four Carrera GTs, all of which failed to sell. Coming off a very successful Carrera GT sale last month at over $1.7m all-in, one would think that success would carry through the market. Bids ranged from $1.1m to $1.35m on one Black, two GT Silver, and one Seal Grey example. The $1.1m car was finished in Seal Grey Metallic and showed just over 13,000 miles on the odometer. But internet sleuths recognized the car as having once belonged to a YouTuber who isn’t known for being “easy” on their cars. History aside, $1.1m was probably all the money given the miles.

Another notable no-sale was a 1959 718 RSK, chassis 718028. This rare Spyder was one of a handful of RSKs produced in a center seat configuration, and it failed to sell at a final bid of $3,400,000. If you think you’ve read that sentence before, it’s because you most likely have as this is now the fifth time the car has gone unsold at auction since 2019, with bids consistently in that range. I hate to use the phrase “the market has spoken,” but in this case, I think it has.

Early Porsches, those sold in the ‘50s and ‘60s, fared a little better than the uber-expensive cars with a sell-through rate of 59%. The most notable cars being a 1967 911S Soft-Window Targa that hammered at $265,000 and a 1957 356A Speedster at $305,000. The Soft-Window Targa was a very nice example finished in Polo Red over Black leatherette with patterned seat inserts. It sold at a final bid of $265,000, which was good enough to be the second highest price paid for the model in the last twelve months. The 356A Speedster, on the other hand, sold at a below-average price of $305,000. Although the Green over Tan color combination looked great, the fact that it wasn’t finished in its original combo and a non-numbers matching engine meant this one was sold about right.

Other notable sales this month included a 2012 Cayman R 6-speed that sold for a strong $76,500, a GT3 RS 4.0 at $762,777, and a number of 996 Turbo Cabriolets, all with the X50 package, and all selling in the low $60s. The Turbo Cabs. were quite interesting as they represented a bit of a rise in 996 Turbo pricing, even when you factor in the rare X50 package.

Overall, May was a pretty solid month, unless you were trying to sell a Carrera GT. June kicks off with a number of million-dollar-plus Porsches at RM Sotheby’s Dare to Dream sale. Let’s hope they fare better. Until then!

Join us as we host the Speed Limit Sign Rally on Saturday, August 3rd. This rally was developed by Emely Winnert, the PCA-Potomac Region’s Rally Master. While the route provides a fabulous driving experience, it also tests you and your navigator’s powers of observation. This rally starts in Cockesyville, MD, and winds its way through Baltimore County, ending with a well-deserved meal and drink at Inverness Brewery.

So, what’s the gimmick? Easy. All you and your navigator must do is spot the various speed limit signs along the route. You will add the numbers on some of the signs and subtract the numbers from others. There will be two classes, one for vehicles with two occupants, and another for families, with trophies for both classes, as well as special surprises. Our destination, Inverness Brewery is very family friendly.

Register for this rally as soon as you can so you can test your team’s skills against the best the Potomac and Chesapeake Regions have to offer.

When: Saturday, August 3rd, 2024 Assembly Point: Cockesyville, MD 21030

Assembly Time: 9:30 AM Driver’s Meeting: 10:00 AM

Departure: First cars off at 10:30 AM Destination: Inverness Brewery, 16200 Markoe Rd Monkton, MD 21111 Distance: Approximately 80 miles

REGISTRATION Each car is required to have a navigator, no solo drivers are permitted. Fee is $15 per car, regardless of the class entered. Register here: http://msreg.com/speedlimitsign.

WHAT DO I NEED TO DO A SPEED LIMIT SIGN RALLY? Since this is a gimmick rally, no special equipment is needed, just a clipboard and some pens. Most importantly, the driver and navigator need a positive attitude, and good powers of observation. Basic math skills will also be helpful. Past that? A desire to have some fun.

RALLY CLASSES This rally will have two different classes for participants to choose from. One class will be the Traditional class, which mandates only two people per vehicle (children 5 years old and younger do not count towards the total number of people in the car).

The Family class allows any number of participants in the vehicle. Family class encourages you to bring grandma, grandpa, adult children, your PCA juniors, and even friends interested in joining the club.

Porsche Parade 68 Winners

As usual I missed Porsche Parade as it took place during the final week of school and my son did have final exams to take. From all reports I’ve read Porsche Parade 68 in Birmingham Alabama was a great event and location. A number of Chesapeake members attended and one of them will submit his story in next months Patter. As our President Steve Buss went through in his President’s Message, the region had a number of winners in various events. Porsche Parade offers a wide range of events, some have age and or gender categories which give you extra opportunities to have fun and win. Concours is always the most competitive event at Parade, most participants are more than happy to share their not so secret tricks, but still they want to beat you! Below is the trophy for our newsletter finishing in 2nd place in the National Newsletter Contest for Class V. PCA region classes are based on the number of primary members, Class V is 1000-1500 members, the highest class is VI with 1500+ members, while Class I is 0-99 members, I imagine we would know every member in Class I. Porsche Parade 69 will be in the Oklahoma City area...the big news is Porsche Parade 70 in 2026 will take place in Lake Placid New York, this will likely be my first Parade!_!
