Welcome to the Patter Team! Welcome James Beavan III, Tristan Hinkley, and Ridgely Mckinless as the newest members of the Patter editor team for 2020. As always, you can reach the editors via editor@pcachs.org. Help us welcome them to the team! •

James Beavan III joined PCA when he bought his first Porsche in January 2017, a 2013 Boxster S. He bought his wife a 2012 Cayenne Turbo in August of 2017. He works as a Controller for Contract Carpets Systems in Beltsville. James enjoys PCA tours, socials, charity, open house and autocross events regularly. He has 2 teenagers and 2 dogs at home, so his 3rd car is a 2016 Toyota Highlander Hybrid. Tristan Hinkley was born in upstate NY, but has lived in every section of the US for at least a few years. He learned the brilliance of convertibles from his father, a man who managed to own and drive a 1980 Fiat Spider 2000 as his only car for 14 years. Tristan has gone through more than 25 cars and 5 motorcycles in his time driving (and seems to have lost count), but his 2002 911 Carrera 4 Cab is his first Porsche. He is ready for a second. Tristan is a Navy veteran currently working in cybersecurity. His wife, Jen, is still active duty Navy. Their dog Haupia has no history of service. The 911 is capacious enough for the three of them for a weekend trip. Ridgely McKinless is a graduate of Towson University, and a Maryland native. A car obsessive since birth, he's made an art form out of finding interesting, yet slightly broken old cars, and somehow avoided chapter 11 bankruptcy. He loves to spend his time driving German cars and drinking German beer -- just not at the same time. Speaking of German machinery, he's a lover of all flat-six Porsche's, so much so that he made a pilgrimage to Zuffenhausen in 2017. When he's not trawling the web for cars, he's writing about them on his automotive account @makecaradsgreatagain on Instagram.

Luftgekuhlt is Heading East in 2020 Those who know Luftgekühlt know it is not your average car show. Unlike your local cars and coffee, the cars aren’t strewn indiscriminately throughout a parking lot; at Luft each Porsche is selected and placed like a museum exhibit. The enormous success of Luftgekühlt has led to shows in the UK and Germany, but in the US it has always been a West Coast affair. Next year that’s going to change. After seven years of increasingly popular and elaborate shows, Luft is finally heading east. This week, the organization announced an East Coast show scheduled for May 2020. Typical of Luft, they are keeping their cards close to the chest. The location is a secret for now. Possible locations could be at the heart of PCNA in Atlanta, or NYC; but here’s hoping they choose the PCA HQ in good old Columbia, Maryland!

President's Message

Vincent Rock

Greetings Chesapeake Region and Happy New Year! Wishing that everyone had a safe, healthy, and enjoyable holiday. This past December 8th we had our annual Kindertime Toy Drive which also benefitted Giving Back – Linda’s Legacy hosted at Porsche of Towson. Kindertime Toy Drive was founded by Pete O’Neal, and is a toy drive that takes donated toys and distributes them to sick and less fortunate children around the local Baltimore area. Pete O’Neal underwent a planned surgery late December, and we would like to wish him a speedy recovery. In addition to the toys donate to Kindertime, the region’s members also sponsored and filled backpacks for Linda’s Legacy. Linda’s Legacy is dedicated to helping the homeless, and backpacks filled with warm clothing were stuffed and will be distributed to those in need in the greater Baltimore area. If you’d like to learn more about either Linda’s Legacy, or Kindertime, please visit their websites at homelessdrive.org and itskindertimetoydrive.com The Tech Session to go over the new 8th generation 911 (992) to be held at Porsche of Annapolis that was originally scheduled for December had to be rescheduled for January 18 th. It should be an excellent event whether you own the same generation 911 or not, and we appreciate Annapolis opening their doors for us. This event is the Saturday after this year’s After Holiday Party. The After-Holiday Party will be held at Turf Valley Resort (2700 Turf Valley Road, Ellicott City, Maryland 21042). Donna Brandt has put together the event, and the much-anticipated gift exchange narrated by the acclaimed Bob and Manny Show will be on hand again is sure to be an event you won’t want to miss. We have a lot of fun events coming up this year, and I’d like to thank all the volunteers who make everything possible for our Club. I would like to invite everyone to attend at least one of our bi-monthly board meetings this year. Whether you’re considering getting more involved in the Club, have an idea for a social event, want to let us know if there is anything you like or think could be improved, or whether you want to just observe, I highly encourage you to attend. We can always use more help! Our first board meeting of the year will be January 15th and will be held at the PCA Headquarters in Columbia. We hope to see you there! If you ever have any questions, comments, or ideas for events, please feel free to email me at President@PCACHS.org. Here’s to another fun and prosperous year for the Chesapeake Region! - Vincent

High Performance Window TintMark Miller These days, pretty much everyone knows about window tint for your car or SUV Porsche. And when you think of window film, the first thing that often comes to mind is darkened windows. But, did you know that there is some pretty incredible technology that has emerged over the last several years that can make your drive more comfortable, safer, and even improve your health? Let’s explore some of the benefits. Improving your health always gets people’s attention. As we age, most of us get to the point where we finally start making wiser decisions about our bodies. So, how can it improve your health? Well, it starts with a 99.9% reduction in the sun’s damaging UV rays. This is a leading cause of melanoma, and in fact, the Skin Cancer Foundation recommends many of the better window tint grades to aid in reducing UV Exposure. 3M and LLumar are two of the better known brands on their suggested list. If extreme levels of heat bother you, adding a high heat reduction film can help to minimize the issue for you on those hot muggy days. Better vision and eye health is another area where window tint can help. Imagine a 55% reduction in the sun’s glare while driving? And think about a dark rainy night and how hard it can be to see when dealing with oncoming headlights. That glare reduction can make a big difference. It has also been shown to protect the proteins in your eye, reducing the chance of cataracts and helping to minimize the effects of people that already have them. Dramatically reduced interior temperatures and the “baking effect” on your skin is one of the most popular reasons to buy a high-performance film. Imagine reducing the sun’s infrared heat by as much as 97% and the overall heat by over 60%? Do you remember walking out to your car on a hot summer day while it was sitting in the sun? You dreaded opening the door as you knew the hot rush of air was going to come out and then you had to sit in it and wait for the air conditioning to cool it off. Look at the numbers above and then apply it to the scenario you just read. Pretty cool, huh? Finally, most major brands offer a clear film that can be applied to the front windshield. It can give you a lot of the benefits listed above is something that is practically invisible. Our shop has installed this film for people on all their windows as they wanted the performance benefits but didn’t want the look of a darker Porsche. One important note is that adding clear window film to your front windshield is technically illegal as the DOT hasn’t addressed the modern clear films. The reality is that the glare reduction alone makes it logical to want this product. Any quality window tint shop can go over the specific legalities with you and I would be glad to discuss this in more detail over the phone. My contact information is at the end of the article. One important thing to note is choose wisely who will perform the work for you. All window film and all tint shops are not created equal. Since you own a Porsche, you already value quality, performance, and attention to detail. Make sure the shop you choose uses a great film and utilizes reference standard installation methods.

Racing News

Ridgely Mckinless

Bad Luck in Bahrain During the WEC 8 Hours of Bahrain last month, the Porsche team fell victim to a stroke of bad luck when both cars suffered from unrelated mechanical issues, within a few laps of each other. During the first few hours of the race, Porsche was off to a strong start, and the team vied with Aston Martin and Ferrari for podium throughout the first half. The trouble began in the fourth hour, when the #91 911 RSR suffered a blown shock absorber, which subsequently took a few laps to repair. Before the team could get the #91 car back on track, the second car, #92, entered the pit lane due to a destroyed wheel nut which had caused wheel hub and tire damage. Both cars spent a few laps each in the pits for repairs. This was a lethal blow to Porsche’s lead, and they fell behind Aston Martin as a result of the lost time. The gap proved to be insurmountable, and Porsche finished fifth and sixth in class. Not a good end to the first half of the season.

15 Attend Tour Planning Workshop

Aniano Arao

The Tour & Rally Committee of PCA Chesapeake conducted a tour planning workshop on Nov. 24, 2019. It was held at the Collectors Car Corral in Owings Mills, courtesy of CCC founder and my fellow Tour & Rally CoChair Randy Moss. A total of 15 PCA members attended.

Ten workshop participants had lunch at Kecco’s Woodfire Kitchen in Reisterstown. One left early.

During the first of two sessions, I gave a quick overview of the various steps of the tour planning and tour running process, during which Randy and I invited comments and suggestions. We also encouraged the attendees to propose tour ideas, roads, routes and restaurants, and to consider volunteering as tour masters, lead drivers, sweepers or marshals. The group discussion was free-flowing, animated and very productive. The day before, I had sent the participants, for their reference, sample PDF copies of a recent tour's drivers' meeting notes and route instructions, as well as PDF copies of PCA's Driving Tour Minimum Standards (rules) and Driving Tour Recommendations (guidelines). Manny Alban, former PCA national president (2011-2014), explained the rationale behind the minimum standards and answered questions about them. Ensuring safety and meeting insurance company requirements were major considerations in their adoption, he noted. The highlight of the workshop was the second session, during which Tom Divilio and Lisa Gritti gave an awe-

Tour Planning Workshop (cont’d) some PowerPoint presentation on their driving tour experiences in Europe. In recent years, they had taken three Autobahn Adventures tours, the most recent of which occurred just two months earlier. Each tour lasted about two weeks and involved staying at the most luxurious hotels, dining at the best restaurants, going to the most fascinating destinations, driving on the most spectacular roads -- and doing it all on brand-new Porsche 911 coupes or cabriolets. Tom and Lisa did a great job capturing everyone's attention and firing up everyone's interest. And then, although I knew the answer, I asked them how much each of these tours cost. When they said "about $30,000 per couple," excluding airfare, I could practically hear the "balloons" of some attendees lose their air. The morning turned out not long enough for everything we were all excited to talk about. By around noon, we had to conclude the workshop and head to an Italian restaurant for lunch. Ten of us proceeded to Kecco’s Neapolitan Woodfire Kitchen in Reisterstown, where the animated conversation continued. All in all, the workshop was a success. Randy and I, and the other attendees, learned a lot. And we managed to interest two more couples to volunteer and help us during the 2020 Tour & Rally Season. As a result, as many as six or seven of our dozen or so events next year could be spearheaded by volunteer or guest tour masters. For more information about Autobahn Adventures' Porsche driving tours in Europe, visit the firm's Web site at https://autobahnadventures.com/ .

Kindertime & Linda’s Legacy Tour

Aniano Arao

Every December, PCA Chesapeake holds a Kindertime Toy Drive for poor children and a Linda's Legacy backpack event for the homeless. This double-barreled charity effort is supported by Porsche Towson, which provides the venue and breakfast. Some of the attendees join the driving tour that usually follows. That was the case again in 2019.

On Dec. 8, 31 people in 15 cars participated in our 34-mile scenic drive from Towson, through Monkton, and to Hunt Valley. Our lunch destination was the Carrabba's Italian Grill in Hunt Valley. A total of 29 people joined the lunch, with 27 tour participants coming in 12 cars. One couple drove to the restaurant directly. This drive was our 15th and final tour and rally event in 2019.

Autocross Update

Greg Hartke

Even with racing in abeyance ‘til spring, I actually have a little news for our ardent autocrossers this month. I’ve been in touch with the folks at Prince George’s Stadium (PGS) where we held the majority of our events this past season and have been told that they’re going to repave the lot. Great! This is certainly big news because we’ve been making do with the deteriorating surface there and it had gotten pretty bad. They had originally hoped to have the job done during the late fall of 2019, but that didn’t happen because the promised funds were not released for the job. The facility is jointly owned by Prince George’s County and the Parks Department and my PGS contact has told me that the complicated ownership structure makes getting anything done there more than a little difficult. Because of that, the funds will not be released and the repaving done ‘til the fall of 2020, which means the lot will be unchanged for much of the coming year. That’s a bummer, but we can at least expect that the venue will be considerably improved for the 2021 season. Where does that leave us? I’m going to try to find another site for the 2020 season, but there’s no guarantee of success. If we’re left with PGS as our site for 2020, we’re going to obtain a backpack blower so that the line can be cleaned much better and faster than when using my hand-held blower. At the worst, we’ll be back at PGS with at least the ability to clean things up much better than we were able to this past season. I know Ripken Stadium is considered by all to be a nice venue. It’s very large and has a beautiful surface and even though it’s a bit of a hike to get there for many of our members, it’s still great for AX. Unfortunately it’s also very expensive to rent the facility and management has always been very difficult to work with when trying to make the arrangements. For those reasons, it’s not high on my list of alternate venues, though I wish it could be. We’ll see what else I can dig up. With the 2019 season complete, it’s time to tabulate the results for the season-long points standings for each class. Awards will be given out in accordance with these rules: Autocross Series Class Awards (trophies) shall be awarded at the end of the season by Class as follows: 1-2 drivers 1 trophy; 3-5 drivers 2 trophies; 6 or more drivers 3 trophies Awards are given to the points leaders. Awards are given to drivers who participate in four or more events. Using these rules, the class award winners for the 2019 season are listed on the following page. Congratulations to the class winners for some great racing this season! The awards will be presented at the After Holiday Party on Saturday January 11th, 2020 at Turf Valley Resort and for those not attending, we’ll be looking forward to getting the awards into your hands once the 2020 season is underway. I mentioned last month that AX Co-chair Brad Martinez had received an offer from CHS PCA Secretary Aaron Miller to help get his car back together and I’m happy to report that after two years on IR, Brad’s car is now up and running again. Ta da! It’s been tough for Brad not being able to compete, but this means that he’ll be out there revvin’ it up with the rest of us again in 2020. Welcome back, Brad! I just received my new tires (RE-71R’s) for the 2020 season and they are now happily ensconced in the dining room. Ah, that sweet smell of racing rubber! I have to get my tires well before the season starts because not too many are made in my sizes (245/35-20 and 285/35-20) and I discovered the hard way that waiting ‘til early spring is not a good idea. Ultra-performance summer tires actually degrade permanently with exposure to cold temperatures, so they have to be kept warm in the house. Maybe I should provide them with a nice blankie to keep them cozy over the winter. ;) Thanks to everyone for coming out to race with us this season! Brad, Meilyng, and I will very much be looking forward to seeing you again in 2020. Have a great winter!

Linda’s Legacy Charity Event

James Beavan III

Saturday December 8th was the 11th annual Linda’s Legacy charity event hosted by Porsche Towson. Chesapeake members arrived by 8:30 AM and were greeted by general manager Steve Postol of Porsche Towson who also provided plenty of coffee and donuts for the early morning helpers. Everyone enjoyed the refreshments and conversing with numerous friendly faces from the club prior to getting to work. In about 1-hour members packed 315 backpacks each with socks, thermals, hoodie, knit cap and gloves. Using an assembly line everyone was involved and very efficient in the process. As the old saying goes “many hands make light work”. Special honors to Super Donor Scott Bordon with 40 backpacks and Chesapeake who sponsored another 50 backpacks. In attendance were Jeanette Sudano from Linda’s Legacy and Pete O’Neal of Kinder Time Toy Drive. They both told us the story of how their organizations came to be and how they have affected their lives as well as the thousands of people they touch every year. A couple young men from Pete’s team also spoke and then helped load all the toys into their truck. As you can see from the photo’s we had nice weather for this wonderful charity event. The lucky Teddy Bear had a great view from behind the wheel of a new Porsche 992 Carrera S convertible! After the 2-part charity event concluded many participants took part in a 34-mile tour on back roads leading to Carrabba’s in Cockeysville. This location is also known for its popular Hunt Valley Horsepower cars & coffee event every Saturday morning. You can learn more about Linda’s Legacy and its different volunteer opportunities at https://www.homelessdrive.org/ In total, Linda’s Legacy distributed over 3000 backpacks and hundreds of boxes of additional supplies to various organizations on Christmas Eve thanks to hundreds of volunteers that came out to show they care. You can learn more about Its Kinder Time Toy Drive at http:// www.itskindertimetoydrive.com/about.html Editor: Read about the related tour earlier in this Patter issue

Public Service Announcements Maryland Real ID—New Drivers License Requirements If you haven’t already visited the MVA to secure a Real ID, the clock is running to meet a federal law. “Please plan ahead,” said MVA administrator, Chrissy Nizer. “The deadline is October 2020 but we don’t want our customers to wait ’till then.” By 2020, older Maryland licenses will no longer exist. The new ones will look different but even if you have one now it won’t be a Real ID until conditions are met. “What that is, is four documents that you need to bring to your local MDOT MVA branch office,” said Nizer. “Those are proof of age and identity.”

Meaning that, along with either a birth certificate or passport, you must also bring a social security card, a driver’s license, and proof of Maryland Residency, like a utility bill or a bank statement. http://www.mva.maryland.gov/realid/index.htm

**AVOID I-895** MAJOR ROADWORK ON I-895 IN BALTIMORE The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) warned motorists today to avoid I-895 and the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel due to major construction and traffic impacts beginning this month. Two-way traffic will operate on I-895 for two years starting Nov. 27. Motorists should use I-695/Key Bridge and I-95/Fort McHenry Tunnel as alternate routes. The work is part of the MDTA’s $189 million I-895 Bridge Project, announced on Dec. 21, 2017, to replace the 60-year-old bridge north of the Harbor Tunnel. “To avoid sitting in traffic, motorists should plan on using I-695 or I-95 as alternate routes,” said Maryland Department of Transportation Secretary and MDTA Chairman Pete K. Rahn. On Nov. 27, northbound I-895 will close completely for one year from the north side of the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel to the Boston/O’Donnell Street exit ramp (Exit 11).

• • • •

Two-way traffic – one lane in each direction – will operate on southbound I-895. The I-895/Holabird Avenue exit ramp (Exit 10) will close completely during this time. Additionally, the northbound bore of the Harbor Tunnel will close 24/7 for 60 days in spring 2019 with twoway traffic operating in the southbound bore. Northbound I-895 and the Holabird Avenue exit ramp will reopen to traffic in spring 2020.
