THE PRESIDENT’S COLUMN ROD HERSBERGER I expect many of us may have fantasized about that

unmolested Speedster, found in a garage or barn, where the owner still thinks it’s worth $5-6,000 instead of $325,000. While not quite on the Speedster level, in December a non-PCA member e-mailed me about a ’69 911 T that had been sitting in a garage across the street in Goleta for about 10 years. The owner’s widow was ready to find it a new home. I contacted Angel Martinez and he and I went to see the car. After some evaluation, he bought it. You can read the beginning of the "sympathetic restoration" of this 911 starting on page 20 of this issue. I have written before of my interest in design in general and how it relates to Porsches in particular. Once again the magazine Christophorus (issue 401) anticipated my need to write something for this column. The cover is called “Color Intensity” and the article in question begins on page 48 and is titled "Infinite Intensity," or see here

if you don't get the magazine: christophorus.porsche. com/en/2021/401/porsche-colours.html. The story is how customers can really personalize their cars with bold color statements. Porsche Exclusive Manufaktor is the unit within the company that works with customers to get it right. Another story in that issue is about Swiss designer Alfredo Haberli who drives, what else, a 1976 911. I want to recognize our new Activities Co-chairs Lionel Neff and Art Shinn. Between them they have adroitly taken over the reins from Doreen Pankow and have put together a great series of drives this year. I hope everyone is staying relatively safe and healthy while Omicron besieges us and that you are able to enjoy driving your Porsche.

FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK DENNIS POWER No past, no future, a Buddhist monk might have said.

Not sure one ever did, but I’ve been thinking about the past: 1969 to be specific. I got to talk with SBR member Angel Martinez and SBR President Rod about a garage find, a 1969 911 T that Angel will restore. I was motivated to do some research and came across a March 1969 review in Car and Driver magazine that compared four great, aircooled cars of that era, one of them a 1969 T. It began with a paragraph that speaks to the impact Porsche had in that time of massive American automobiles. Face it. This [1969] is the Age of Protest. And when you want to register your protest against the impersonalism of dumb cars, burning your driver's license on the steps of the new GM building isn't your best bet. First of all, no one at GM is going to give much of a damn, and, once you've made the Grand Gesture, the only way to get back home is to take a subway—no matter how much you hate those dumb four door sedans with 6-cylinder engines and 2-speed automatics, eternally condemning yourself to the IRT isn't the plan. It's much simpler and a hell of a lot more satisfying to buy a car that will do your protesting for you. And if there's any car that defies Detroit's sacred cows it's a Porsche. Small displacement, rear-engined, air-

cooled, independently suspended, demanding and not prone to easily forgive errors, the Porsche is the antithesis of Detroit's engineering and marketing tenets. And, of course, there is the reputation thing. Porsches are arrogant. Only the fact that it has four wheels makes a Porsche a "car." It is a trip, it is an expression of understanding what the world is really like, it is a teutonic NASA mobile miniaturized for the highway. Porsche knows; Porsche cares; Porsche lives. My own memories of 1969 were not of tripping and the Summer of Love. I was just starting my career, had a one-year-old son and another on the way, and sit-ins and love-ins were far from my mind. But I did attend the 1969 SCCA races at the Santa Barbara Airport that summer and did have my now-vintage camera with me. Here’s what I dug up: photos of a 904 (American race car driver Milt Minter is probably the pilot) and a handful of 911s. Porsche magazines have a lot in them about the now and the future: road tests of the latest models and variants, and visions of prototypes. As for the past, there is still that romantic attachment to the 356s and air-cooled 911s we see at our events. And, of course, the 904 is revered. I hope this issue has reports on events that will add to your collective memories.

Holiday Breakfast at Aloha By Caroline Doll

Question: What’s one of the best ways to spend a crisp, clear December morning?

Answer: Get together with a fun group of 54 Porsche enthusiasts and enjoy a tasty breakfast and a rainbow-colored lineup of some 30 Porsches, old and new! That’s what happened last December in Ventura. It was the first affair of its kind and we hope it won’t be the last.

Club members arrived early and thanks to Sean Doll we had a flagman at the entrance to the parking structure to point drivers in the right direction. Cars steadily circled “clockwise, opposite of NASCAR,” up three levels to park under the sunshine at the top! Each Porsche took its place, neatly backed in, and lined up to present a striking picture. Club members and guests

admired the collection and mingled in the cool morning sunshine. It couldn’t have been a nicer morning with a backdrop of the Ventura hillsides on one side, the historic Ventura pier on the other, and the Channel Islands in the distance! As we always do, there was talk about cars we may not have seen before, restorations that were underway, past events, and drives we are thinking about doing in the coming year.


A little before 8 a.m. we headed down to Aloha Steakhouse, not for steak, but for a sumptuous buffet breakfast. This was a special occasion made possible by restaurant co-owners Jim Avrea and Charnell Smith. The restaurant was decorated for the holidays and they opened their doors early to prepare a breakfast for the group. If you haven’t been inside their restaurant, think The Chart House style! It is located on the town’s oceanfront promenade.

After the meal, SBR Vice President Steve Doll opened a brief meeting by greeting everyone. President Rod Hersberger then said a few words of gratitude, followed by Activities Co-chair Art Shinn giving a run-down of upcoming club events. Membership Chair Sue Kinsling and Editor Dennis Power, the awardees of 2021 Man and Woman of the Year, were recognized again for their contributions to the club over the past year. After breakfast we headed up top again to have a last look at the cars, have a group photo taken, and say our goodbyes. We plan to have more special events like this. Stay tuned; hope to see you there. Caroline Doll, along with Vice President Steve, have been members of PCA since 2007.

The Sweetwater Run Wild, Woolly, and Winding By Lionel Neff

T

he morning of January 22 commenced at 6 a.m. when the alarm sounded. It was still dark and cold. My wife and I, in a sleepy haze, managed to avoid bumping into each other while piecing together our attire for the day. By 7 a.m., with our coffee down, badges in place, and meal tickets, clip boards, and liability waivers all accounted for, we jumped in our trusty Porsche Turbo. I turned the key and the Turbo roared to life, anxious for a new adventure. The plan was to meet Art Shinn and Doreen Pankow at 8:30 in the Castaic Denny’s parking lot in preparation for the onslaught of the day’s enthusiasts. At 8:45 a parade of Porsches started arriving. I was gratified to witness our

preparations had paid off as the liability waivers were duly signed and meal ticket envelopes dispersed; all went off without a hitch. We divided 66 Porsche crews into two groups. I would lead Group A while Doreen Pankow would lead Group B in her blue 993. At 10 a.m. all drivers were directed to their cars. The weather prediction was for heavy winds, which proved to serve us favorably. Due to the harsh forecast that in fact did not materialize, the roads were free of bicycles, motorcycles, and, for the most part, other vehicles. One could not hope for a better driving day: mostly clean, curvy roads, beautiful blue skies, and only moderate winds.


Our drive took us from the town of Castaic up Lake Hughes Road for 23 miles of exciting curves. Lake Hughes Road was built by the California Conservation Corps in 1936. At the top, Lake Hughes Road runs into Lake Elizabeth Road. At this point we stopped to allow everyone to gather up and take a few photos. As we travelled over Lake Elizabeth Road, one could not help notice on the left the rock-faced structure of the famous Rock Inn, which in 1928 served the local citizenry of mostly regional farmers and ranchers as the original trading post, post office, hotel, and bus stop. Five miles farther took us to San Francisquito Canyon Road through the Sierra Pelona Mountains, a range flanked to the south by the Santa Clarita Valley and to the north by the Antelope Valley and Mojave Desert. San Francisquito Canyon Road was the original site of the Placer Mining Company where Spanish missionaries searched for gold. The mines were abandoned in 1848. Between 1924 and 1928, the canyon was the site of the St. Francis Dam, a project of the Los Angeles Water Department. At 11:57 p.m. on March 12, 1928, the dam failed resulting in a flood that took over 400 lives as water raced down the Santa Clara River through Valencia, Newhall, Fillmore, and Santa Paula, emptying into the Pacific Ocean 54 miles down river. However, it was clear sailing for our group of intrepid Porsche drivers. Four miles into the canyon we turned left onto Spunky Canyon Road and through the town of Green Valley. Spunky was devoid of any traffic and availed us of spectacular curves where every driver deftly displayed their best driving skills. Once over the crest, the panorama of Bouquet Reservoir came into view. The lake was created behind a dam that was constructed on the Santa Clara River in 1934.

Spunky Canyon ends at Bouquet Canyon Road, at which point the group turned right and, as always, enjoyed the challenging curves for a blissful 11 miles until we reached Vasquez Canyon Road. The group again gathered and we turned left and 7 miles later headed left again onto Sierra Highway. Finally, we turned right onto Davenport Road to Agua Dulce and reached our destination, the Sweetwater Bar & Grill. After 90 miles of uninterrupted driving, it appeared like an oasis for those definitely ready for lunch and a break. When we reached Sweetwater, owner Joe Marazzico was waiting for us and started serving our meals in short order. Everyone appeared to have had a wonderful time replete with great roads and fellowship complemented by full bellies and fond memories. The best events are often uneventful and that was the case here. This car had been sitting for ten years. That alone, when I saw it, suggested it is a car that needs someone with experience and some insight on what could be done and what it could be.

Restoration of a 1969 911 T Chapter 1: The Find

By the Editor, in conversation with Angel Martinez and Rod Hersberger Rod Hersberger: This started last December. An e-mail found its way to me stating that the sender knew of a widow living across the street from him who has a 1969 911 T and could I help them find a buyer. I contacted SBR member Angel Martinez and we went to see the car. He was interested enough to want to take it to his shop for further evaluation. Angel Martinez: Often when you go to look at a garage find you see something that is not pretty: there may be frame damage, hidden body damage, rust, rat’s nests, etc. The engine may not even turn. I wasn't expecting a lot, but when I saw this car I was surprised at how straight the car was, with no evidence of accidents or body damage and no sign of serious rust. This was a car that definitely wanted attention. So I decided to take it to my shop to give it a thor-

ough inspection. I told the owner that I may be interested in purchasing it, or I may know someone who would be, but if not I would give her a full appraisal on what it would need for anyone else who might want to buy it. We brought the car to my shop—The Paddock Motor Club in Goleta—and got it up on the lift. We didn’t find any significant rust and nothing was too alarming. The car was running when it was stored ten years ago and maybe started once after five years. The car had sat with oil and gas in it so the carburetors would have to be rebuilt before we could see if it would start. But before that, a compression test and leak down test would be necessary to determine the overall health of the internal engine components. The fuel tank may have to be removed and cleaned. Most important, the engine turned by hand. And so I decided to buy it.


What’s immediately ahead is to drop and thoroughly evaluate the 2.0 liter engine. Our contact said that thirty years ago he and the previous owner pulled the engine and brought it to Joe Schneider. That hasn’t been confirmed, but Joe may have rebuilt the engine once before. The first owner was a student at UCSB who bought the 911 new in 1969. The second owner bought it in 1974. He was an engineer at Raytheon and used the car for local travel and only the occasional longer trip. It has 113,700 mostly local miles on the odometer. Editor: Let’s look ahead. What's your plan with the car now that you are going to keep it? Angel: My intention is to do what is called a “sympathetic restoration,” which means correcting all the mechanical and any structural issues, while maintaining the cosmetic effects of history and use (patina, period modifications, etc.). It makes for a usable, vintage car without erasing its history. In this specific case I’ll preserve everything I can, like the Ossi Blue paint, parts of the interior, and the original 2.0 liter motor: it is a numbers-matching car. I want to make it reliable and drivable. These cars handle beautifully; they are light, nimble, and well balanced, and make all the right sounds. You can have so much fun with these cars. I don’t have immediate plans to show it, but if shown in a PCA concours it would probably be in the Preservation Class.

Editor I think our readers might be interested in a series of articles on your project. One would be now with the car as you found it. Another would be when you’re well into your assessment, started the restoration, and know where it will go from there. A third could be when nearly completed, and the final would be the grand unveiling, perhaps at the SBR Concours this fall. Angel: That’s possible. With a car this age you never know what you will find. There are always surprises. I mentioned the interior: headliner and door panels need to be replaced, there is a plastic dash cap hiding who knows what, that sort of thing. All the rubber will have to be replaced. The exterior needs a good washing and polishing, but I don’t intend to repaint it. The goal is to make the car drivable, something not so precious that you don’t want to drive it to cars & coffee or take on weekend trips and rallies. For what it’s worth,

in my opinion there are too many so-called “precious cars.” Growing up, all of the Porsches I saw were driver’s cars. It’s often said that Porsches are made to be driven and it's true. I want to leave this one largely as it is, but make it mechanically perfect and a lot fun to drive. I don’t mind the patina of rock chips on the front hood and bumper and an ever expanding bug collection. These cars stand out precisely because they are not precious and people are driving them. It’s a true garage find and with the shape it's in is very rare. Rod: That’s great. We are grateful that you have let us in on the early stages of your project. And I’m sure Joe Schneider’s 55 years of experience will give us great insights as well as to what it takes to put this 911 T back on the road. I look forward very much to seeing what he and you uncover and the next installment—the surprises and all.

We know that a 1969 911 is valued today because of its history and rarity. What was it thought of back when it was introduced? In the archives of Car and Driver magazine I found a March 1969 article by none other than Mark Donohue, the American race car driver known for his ability to set up his own race car as well as drive it to victories. He and the staff of the magazine compared a 912 and the then new 911 T along with the fuel injected 911 E and 911 S, both on public roads and the track. In addition to liking the overall balance of the T, Donohue added, "The 125 horsepower 911 T turned out to be everybody's favorite, not only at Marlboro, where its relatively high torque at low rpm allowed it to turn the second fastest lap times, but in traffic where the torque once again made it the easiest car to drive." —Editor

Monterey Spring Fling March 22-24, 2022

M

onterey is one of California’s most scenic and historic coastal destinations, a place to explore and enjoy. From the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary to Spanish-era adobes and John Steinbeck’s Cannery Row. We’ve planned a great route to get there, a lunch stop along the way, a fine hotel to house us, and an ideal seafood restaurant for a group dinner. And on the second day we include a visit to Canepa, an automotive nirvana in the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Springtime also brings classic drives through verdant hills, a pageant of wildflowers, and the rugged Big Sur coast.

Day 1 starts with a drive on Highway 101, lunch in Paso Robles at Paso Market Walk (many restaurants to chose from), a tour inland on CA-25 east of Pinnacles National Monument, a rest stop in Hollister, and a run into Monterey from the north via CA-1. Lodging for our group is at the Victorian Inn in the Cannery Row neighborhood of Monterey Harbor. Our group dinner will be at the Fish Hopper Restaurant (700 Cannery Row, Suite K), a 10-minute walk from the hotel. Day 2 has us venturing north on CA-1 along Monterey Bay to the restoration shop, showroom, and sports and race

car collection of Canepa in Scotts Valley. Canepa is where the world’s best automotive artisans work to preserve important road cars and competition vehicles for generations to come. After returning to Monterey for the evening, we are free to dine at any of Monterey’s fine restaurants. Day 3 is for the trip home with a drive down CA-1 through Big Sur and a stop for brunch at Nepenthe. This trip is limited to 20 Porsches and 40 people. California’s Rancho Era History The Dana Adobe Cultural Center and Rancho Nipomo Saturday, June 25, 2022

T

he stories of California’s Rancho Era history come alive at the Dana Adobe Cultural Center. Visitors are engaged with our region’s history, connecting with the peoples, the land, and its resources to foster environmental stewardship and cultural understanding. Rancho Nipomo once encompassed the vast majority of land between what is now Arroyo Grande and the Santa Maria River, an area blessed by rich soil and natural resources that enabled the establishment of towns whose economy was based on largely agriculture and natural resource extraction. Join fellow SBR members on an engaging drive along beautiful back roads and in learning about the original land grant awarded in1837 to William G. Dana and his family by the Mexican government, a grant that included Nipomo and the Los Berros region. We’ll participate in docent tours of the property and experience what it was like to live and work on a California rancho. We’ll start midmorning (details to follow), arrive in time for a bring-you-own picnic lunch with fellow participants (picnic tables available), and begin the formal tour at 1:30 p.m., ending at 3:00.

SBR Donates Holiday Toys to Santa Barbara's Unity Shoppe Attendees at the festive Holiday Brunch held last December at the Spanish Hills Country Club donated over 100 toys for the children of the many families served by Santa Barbara's Unity Shoppe. Thousands of children rely on Unity’s Back-to-School Shoppe each fall for new school clothing, backpacks, and all of their school supplies. During the winter holiday season, thousands of Santa Barbara County children, along with their families, select their favorite toys and gifts (new and handmade).

SBR CONTINUES ITS EXPLORATION OF AMERICA’S MAGIFICENT SOUTHWEST September 14 -20, 2022 By Nicolas Liakas

I

t’s time again for PCA/SBR members to explore the beauty and magic of America’s scenic wonders. Over seven days and six nights, we will travel via a circular route that will create a life-long memory. Here is what we can expect to see. Slot Canyons at Page, Arizona. We will enter a magical world and immerse ourselves in a fully-guided tour through the sandstone walls of the Upper and Lower Antelope Canyons. We start with a short, 10-minute walk from the reception area to the entrance of the canyons. The trail leading to the entrance of Lower Antelope Canyon is both rocky and sandy, so please wear appropriate shoes. (While the top of the canyon is wide, the path inside can be quite narrow, so tours are not recommended for people who have issues with enclosed spaces.) Horseshoe Bend At Glen Canyon, the Colorado River makes a wide sweep around a sandstone escarpment. On its long journey to the sea, the river meandered, sometimes making wide bends, but always seeking the path of least resistance. Around five million years ago, the Colorado Plateau uplifted and the meandering rivers that crossed the ancient landscape were trapped in their beds. Over time, the rivers cut through the uplifted layers of sandstone. At Horseshoe Bend, the Colorado River created a roughly 1,000-foot deep, 270-degree horseshoe-shape in the canyon. Glen Canyon Dam This dramatic structure is a concrete arch-gravity dam on the Colorado River in northern Arizona, near the town of Page. The 710-foot high dam was built by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation from 1956 to 1966 and forms Lake Powell, one of the largest man-made reservoirs in the U.S. Zion National Park Follow the paths where ancient native people and pioneers walked. Gaze up at massive sandstone cliffs of cream, pink, and red that soar into a brilliant blue sky. Experience wilderness in a narrow slot canyon. Zion’s unique array of plants and animals will enchant you as you absorb the rich history of the past and enjoy the excitement of present-day adventures.

Bryce Canyon National Park Bryce Canyon is not a single canyon, but a series of natural amphitheaters, or bowls, carved into the edge of a high plateau. The most famous is the Bryce Amphitheater, which is filled with irregularly eroded spires of rocks called hoodoos. Perhaps every visitor to the park will spend at least some time marveling at its four main viewpoints, all found within the first miles of the park: Bryce Point, Inspiration Point, Sunset Point, and Sunrise Point. Las Vegas One night of fun, food, shows, and lost wages (or retirement funds)! Enjoy yourselves and start the drive home the next morning.
