THE PRESIDENT’S COLUMN
Our Club’s 60th birthday Gala Brunch at the Santa Barbara Hilton was a huge success. Big thanks to the committee that started working on it over a year ago and the many volunteers that put it all together. Beautiful table and room decorations. Great to hear the history of the club, meet some longtime members and see the past club history books. John Barrison (goodie store fame) assembled a table about members from the early days he referred to as the dinosaur table. Good work, John.
The day started earlier at the newly remodeled Santa Barbara Porsche where we enjoyed coffee and delicious breakfast treats. It made for a perfect starting point for festivities that kicked off with another scenic drive designed by your Activities Co-chair Lionel Neff. Many of us were disappointed we didn’t win any of the great raffle prizes.
The following Saturday we were greeted at the front door of Mike Malamut’s private Auto Collection by the fragrance of fresh-baked chocolate chip cookies his wife had made. We
STEVE DOLL
were joined, thanks to Briggette, by the Mercedes Benz Club and the Ventura
Motor Sports Club. Mike took time to speak to us about his early work years and how his passion not just for cars
but all things cars-memorabilia. Many of the cars were surrounded by what you might see in that era, in a garage or home. It was very fun. We spent a couple hours checking it all out. If you ever get the chance, go visit and have a cookie or two.
Our Alternative Vehicle Cars and Coffee months are always in August and April. I never fail to enjoy the several other beautiful cars and, recently, an older reconditioned BMW motorcycle and electric skate board.
The Activities Committee continues to amaze with top notch drives and outings. Check out our website or attend our cars and coffee for the latest activities. You can also see a list in this award winning magazine (thank you Dennis Power), but the events fill up quickly. If you have a suggestion for a fun drive, event, or place to go let us know. You could even help plan it!
Lastly, check out Good Vibes Breakfast Club on Instagram. A friend talked me into going. It’s early on Friday mornings, about 100 miles from Ventura, up Angeles Crest Highway. People arrive early at the closed Newcombs Ranch restaurant. We were driving back by 10 a.m. It’s a fun twisty drive up Big Tujunga canyon and Angeles Crest Highway. Lots of Porsche’s and a variety of other cars. Enjoy your cars—drive safely.

MUSIC MEMORIES
At the recent 60th anniversary luncheon celebration of our Santa Barbara chapter, many of us were blown away by Randy Fishwick’s slide show of members during our history and, in particular, the fantastic music that accompanied it, all with a car or road theme. Even better, to fit with the music that many of us listened to—and still listen to—most of it came from the 1960s and 1970s.
Over the course of the next few days, several of us spent considerable time reminiscing with each other by email about our experiences attending live concerts of not only groups and artists showcased in the slideshow, but many other of our favorites of that era. I was particularly delighted to participate in that because, until that point, while Art and I are very friendly with a number of members, it was the guys who shared commonality: their love of cars and in particular, of course, Porsches. But last week made me realize that so many of you share the same interest in music and during that email chain it was fantastic to learn of your memories of concerts attended, and the related stories pertaining to those stars of the time.
Here are just a few of the memories shared with the group:
DOREEN SHINN
“Over the last 25 years, I too have had the opportunity to see and experience some of the great ones like Tony Bennett at the Hollywood Bowl, Fleetwood Mac at the Forum, Elton John in Vegas, Billy Joel at Sofi Stadium, and the Stones at both Dodger Stadium and Rose Bowl. My only story to share dates back to 2006, when ‘Pirates’ was filming at the Disney lot and, as Security Manager, I had the responsibility of keeping out cast members hoping to catch a glimpse of Johnny Depp. Well, one afternoon, while I was checking on my guards, I met Keith Richard’s cook making bangers & mash for Keith. So he offered me a plate and I accepted. A few minutes later, I had a chance to pet ‘Ruby Tuesday’ (Keith Richard’s British bulldog), and shortly after met the man himself. It was a cool experience that I will always remember!”
—Sal Reyes
“Fleetwood Mac 1977 at the UCSB stadium; Santa Barbara Bowl was Crosby Stills and Nash in 2008; Jesse Colin Young at the Universal when it was open to the air; Fleetwood Mac and Steely Dan at the Forum; Elton John, and the best was Santana 1½ years ago, front and center: three drummers! Oh, last Thursday we saw the Cowsills, Jay and the Americans, the Turtles, the Association and the Vogue, all with
original members, sharing a back up band.”—Ron Mulick
“My big music event was at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium in October 1964. It was a documentary film called the T.A.M.I. Show. You can hardly believe who performed in it. Some of the groups included Chuck Berry, The Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones, Marvin Gaye, James Brown, Lesley Gore, The Supremes, and more. Oh, and it was free! They just wanted to fill up the seats!”
—Bob Clarke
“My concert stories came about by my love of music and association with people in the industry. I attended performances at the Troubadour in West L.A. on a regular basis. Most memorable were early career performances by John Dusseldorf (later known as John Denver), Rod Stewart who commented how his voice sounded like he’d gargled with Dutch cleanser. Later, because of a close friendship with the PR executive at MCA, I was invited to attend an audition for Tanya Tucker at the Troubadour. Opening for her was BB King. The Universal Amphitheater was a wonderful venue where I attended many concerts. One memorable one was Loggins and Messina where the opening act was Heart. I also saw John Denver and Elton John there. At the Hollywood Bowl it was Peter, Paul,
and Mary, Simon and Garfunkel, the Beatles, Natalie Cole. The Forum: Yes, and Fleetwood Mac. The Greek Theater: Neil Diamond, Johnny Mathis. Since moving to SB County 37 years ago, Stevie Nicks, Sarah Brightman, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, the Eagles, Gordon Lightfoot, Foreigner. All memorable experiences that led to an appreciation for music and the fine arts. My overall favorite? The Eagles.”
—Lionel Neff
“I, too, was at Elton’s at Dodger Stadium: a great memory. But one that sticks out for me was while living in Toronto; my girlfriend and I visited a tiny bar/lounge and an unknown band had just released their first LP as they tried to promote it. Hall & Oates were performing on a stage, tucked in the rear of the bar, with just a handful of people attending. I had never heard of them, but my girlfriend insisted we go there for drinks after dinner and take a listen: became an instant fan. This October, Dana and I will be seeing David Gilmore at the Hollywood Bowl. We saw Roger Waters at the Bowl some years back and he did the entire ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ which was surprisingly incredible. Gilmore is one of the best all-time guitar players IMO. We expect more Pink Floyd tunes, definitely ‘Comfortably Numb.’ Just sad, due to personal differences, that they will never play together again.”
—Steve Geldman
“I am thankful to have seen a fair number of top musicians from that time period, which was not unusual for my friends and I who grew up in Burbank. Some of the groups I saw back then included Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, The Rolling Stones, Queen, Cheap Trick, Kansas, Neil Young, and The Police. Usually I was in cheap seats, but my eyes and ears were in better shape back then. I have a hunch that previous Der Auspuff editor John Alfenito saw his share of rockers and
pop stars back in the day, having been a radio DJ in Los Angeles!
—Randy Fishwick
“My favorite among them all was Springsteen at The Roxy in 1975. He was just starting to break nationally and it was the week he was on the cover of Time, Newsweek, and Rolling Stone. The Roxy is small and was packed with other rock stars and show biz heavies: best show I’ve ever seen. I was about 15 feet away from the stage. Elton John at Dodger Stadium was also a favorite. Of course, growing up in Michigan, I was lucky enough to see pretty much every Motown act, including the amazing Temptations and Marvin Gaye! Oh, and I saw The Eagles open for YES in Atlanta in 1972. A crazy mash-up before the Eagles hit it big. Ah, memories.
One more name-drop from me; in the spring of 1975 I was the afternoon DJ at the #1 Top 40 radio station in Atlanta. Elton John was on a promotional tour for his ‘Goodbye Yellow Brick Road’ album. His record label asked if we’d be interested in having Elton do an hour on the radio with me. The station accepted and Elton and I shared 60 minutes together with him, telling stories while playing his favorite songs on the radio. We hit it off immediately and had a great time. Later that year, Elton was back in Los Angeles doing an interview at L.A.’s #1 Top 40 station, KHJ. While talking to the station’s Program Director, Elton heard KHJ was looking for a new evening DJ. Elton told the PD he should hire ME from Atlanta! The rest is history that certainly changed my life as I was offered and accepted the biggest move of my career thanks to my ‘pal’ Elton John.” —John Alfenito
“I’m older than most of you and I was lucky to see Janis Joplin live! She performed in Toronto as part of the Festival Express tour on June 28, 1970 at the CNE Stadium. This was a legend-
ary concert. Also, about that time the London band Deep Purple was touring and Toronto was one of their stops. While living in Oakland, I saw Carlos Santana play and Leslie and I attended The Rolling Stones on their Halloween concert in 1994. The concert took place at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum. We saw the Eagles perform in 2014 at the newly renovated Forum in January of that year. It was a highly anticipated event as the Eagles were the first band to perform at the reopened venue. —Dennis Power
“Very cool Dennis! But if we’re bragging about attending early concerts of groups that were on this video, I can beat all of you: The Beatles at the Cavern in 1962! —Doreen Shinn
Several other members added their memories and comments to the email saga, and I believe we all thoroughly enjoyed reading about the reminiscences of our fellow members, and in many cases, thinking ‘wow, I would have loved that,’ or ‘I was there too!’ Thanks to all of you who contributed for making this article such an act of love.

SBR Celebrates its 60th Anniverary 60 Years Strong, Full Speed Ahead
by Dennis Power
Porsche passion, camaraderie, and California cruising
Our Santa Barbara Region of the Porsche Club of America commemorated its 60th anniversary in style with a celebratory gathering on July 20, 2024. The event brought together members to celebrate their shared passion for Porsche and the club’s rich history.
The day kicked off with a well-appointed continental breakfast, generously hosted by Porsche Santa Barbara in their newly remodeled showroom. They went all out: quiches, fresh fruit, assorted pastries, and juice and coffee. We had time to reconnect with many club members and swap stories, not to mention getting up close to the latest models on the showroom floor. Of special interest was the 718 Spyder RS in Nordic Gold Metallic, waiting to be picked up by its new owner next week. A 918 Spyder in Sport Classic Grey, Taycan 4S in Oak Green Neo Metallic, and 911 Carrera S/T also in Sport Classic Grey did not disappoint. We are always grateful for this opportunity to warm up our social engines and whet our appetite for the road ahead.
Mountains, taking us behind Santa Barbara, Montecito, and Carpinteria. From there it was up the curves and enjoying the scenery along Hwy 150, past Lake Casitas, and down Santa Ana Rd. and Hwy 33 to Ventura. The final leg was one that always feels like coming home: Hwy 101 along the coast and back to Santa Barbara. Activities Co-chair Lionel Neff always puts together routes that allow members to enjoy the thrill of our regional landscape behind the wheel of our beloved Porsches—he didn’t let us down.
by Gary Krueger
The day continued to unfold with a scenic drive along the foothills of the Santa Ynez
Following the drive, attendees gathered at the picturesque Hilton Santa Barbara Beach Front Resort for a commemorative luncheon and program. The room was festively set up and included hand-made “floral” arrangements. President Steve Doll welcomed the 150 attendees and called to the podium Zone 8 Representative Lori DeCristo. Lori recounted some of the history of our zone and honored our region with a special, 60th Anniversary certificate from the Porsche Club of America.
President Doll expressed heartfelt thanks to those who ensured the success of this event, to the dozens of volunteers who contribute their time and skills, and to those who have been dedicated to the Santa Barbara Region over the decades. He also thanked many individuals and businesses for their ongoing financial support through advertising in our magazine and by sponsoring events. A special tribute was given to those who have been dedicated to the organization over the years, their unwavering support forming the foundation of its success. All were recognized and received our applause. (See the table on page 17 for details of the acknowledgements by President Steve.)
During lunch, and continuing through the event, a video program masterfully produced by Randy Fishwick screened continuously with images contributed by club members. The video highlighted some of our most memorable events—and memorable people—over the years. While enjoying the excellent buffet put on by the Hilton, the room was filled with vibrant chatter. Guests felt free to move among the tables and greet old friends and make new ones. Smiles were everywhere. With photographer Gary Krueger moving among the tables, it seemed very much like a true celebration. It was a true celebration!
Vice President Lorraine Gray was welcomed to the podium to continue the program. She noted that in June 1964 we started with 35 charter members who lived primarily in the Santa Barbara area. The Club started growing in the early 1970s as more members joined who were very active, many enjoying organizing events: Charlie Davis, Anita Banke, Joe and Kathy Schneider, Burt and Marge Misevic, and Ed and Jan Yates, to name a few. Membership took off when Porsche owners from Ventura County started joining in the late 1970s. The Santa Barbara Region has now grown to over 835 primary members and 525 affiliates.
Steve noted that scrap books, past magazines, and an assemblage of awards received were assembled on the back table. We have a lot to celebrate; out of 141 other Regions in the United States and Canada at the time, in 2001 we won the PCA Region of the Year award when Carolyn Ewbank was President. We won again in 2014 when Doreen Pankow was President. Other awards won over the past years include Region of the Year, PCA Newsletter of the Year, National PCA Family of the Year, and Zone 8 Enthusiast of the Year. (See the table on page 17 for details.)
The Santa Barbara Region has stayed connected to our communities throughout our history by contributing to great causes. Our Board of Directors selects one or more charities to support every year. Over two dozen regional charities have received support, some several times. By dedicating resources to charitable initiatives, the club has enhanced the well-being of our region.

Exemplifying commitment to the club are the presidents. Since 1964, we have been served by 37 presidents and were fortunate to have in attendance ten of the men and women who so skillfully led our Region. A special round of applause went to the following:
• Joe Schneider –1972
• Burt Misevic – 1976
• Alan Surgi – 1986
• Suzi Sheller – 1994
• Joe Carastro – 2005–2006 (who came all the way from South Carolina)
• Nicolas Liakas – 2007, 2008, 2012
• David Stone – 2009–2010
• Doreen Pankow – 2013–2014
• Rem Laan – 2018–2019
• Rod Hersberger – 2020–2023
• Steve Doll – current president
We couldn’t have an event like this without acknowledging the Porsche dealers in our region who provide support for the club and service and new models of the marque to our members. David Stone, Dealer Relations appointee and Past President, took the stage for a special presentation to our dealers. He noted that over the years, Porsche Santa
Barbara and Rusnak Westlake Porsche have advertised in our magazine, hosted events at their dealerships, provided door prizes and gifts, sell us cars without markups, and keep our cars running like new. Dealers were presented with plaques acknowledging our appreciation. Rene Verbrugge represented Porsche Santa Barbara and Adrian Romero was here from Rusnak Porsche Westlake.
David asked all members to stand and participate in the “Membership Stand Down,” in which members sit when the number of years they have been members is called. The last members standing have been active the longest. The longest tenured PCA members are Joe and Kathie Schneider, who joined the Los Angeles Region in August 1964, transferring to SBR in 1971.
The Longest Tenured SBR member is Burt Misevic, who joined PCA in Germany in August 1967 and transferred to SBR in 1969. Each received applause and were presented with a bottle of wine.

Next came “Notes on Santa Barbara Region’s Early Years,” presented by Burt Misevic. Burt was the PCA National President in the 1980s, past president of SBR, held numerous other offices in our region, and was also active in Zone 8 and the national Porsche Club of America. He referenced the concours, autocrosses, and social events we’ve held. There were anecdotes many of us had not heard about before. Of special interest was learning that in 1964 Santa Barbara was the site of the national Porsche Parade. After a round of applause, President Doll thanked Burt for his fascinating presentation on the early history of our club, adding that his insights and the historical photos screened earlier brought the past to life.

Nicolas Liakas, Secretary Doreen Shinn, and Nicole Verbrugge took the stage for something that has had us waiting expectantly for the last few months: the 60th Anniversary Raffle. Almost 200 tickets had been purchased. Nick acknowledged Doreen Pankow and David Stone who worked hardest in pulling together today’s events.
He began with the drawing for the First Prize, an all-expenses paid Fast Lane Travel Traditional Fall Treffen from September 22 to 28. The event includes round trip, coach airfare for two to Stuttgart, Germany; a Porsche Factory tour; a Porsche Museum tour with lunch; a two-day rental of a new Porsche for driving on the Autobahn at speed; an Alpine Pass drive with lunch at the top of the mountain; an overnight stay at a five-star hotel overlooking Lake Constance on the Swiss border; and a VIP lunch at Stuttgart’s version of an Oktoberfest. The prize has a cash value of $15,600 or a cash option of $10,000. It was obvious why the excitement had been building. The winner was Alexander Gray.
The Second Prize was a set of tires from California Tire Co. in Newbury Park, or a cash option of $1,000. The winner was Alan Surgi. Third Prize was two sets of tickets for the Porsche Experience Center in Los Angeles that includes track time, an instructor, and lunch. The winners for the PEC prize were Brian Schmidt from the Los Vegas Region and SBR member Don Young. The fourth prize, a coupon for Ceramic Paint Protection from Ghost Shield in Thousand Oaks, valued at $1,200, went to Steve Mascagno. Fifth Prize, a $250 gift certificate to spend at Rusnak’s Porsche Boutique went to Lionel Neff. And, finally, for sixth, a onenight stay at the Hilton Santa Barbara went to Tara Konrath.
President Doll thanked our members for serving as event organizers and volunteers over the years and for actively supporting the club by participating in our events—“It’s the People … all of you who make our Region so great!” He also thanked Karen Turek, Carol Matheiu, Doreen Pankow, Susan Stone, Jean McNair, Gloria Hallier, and Sue Kinsling, the ladies who made the floral table arrangements—the arrangements were taken home by one lucky person at each table. For all, there were 60th Anniversary car window decals, one with the Santa Barbara Region logo and one from National PCA. Steve graciously closed the celebration by

EPIC KERNVILLE BACKROADS
DRIVE, DINE, AND STAY
Story by Lionel Neff
The morning of June 19 was cool and overcast in Carpinteria. Knowing the roads ahead were going to be challenging, as was warned in the pre-drive writeup, I couldn’t wait to get up, load the Turbo, and get on the road where our Porsche event partners would be waiting. The plan was to meet by 9:00 a.m. at the Denny’s parking lot in Castaic where the pre-drive instructions would be given. Everyone showed up on time and at 9:30 a.m. the morning was brought to life with the unmistakable sound created by nine Porsches starting their engines. The excitement was palpable knowing the roads that waited ahead.
Once under way, our route took us onto Hwy 5 over the Grapevine and the Tejon Pass for 43 miles until exiting at Wheeler Ridge. What came into view included views of the vast agricultural enterprises that marked the landscape. (Historic note: In 1952, the community of Wheeler Ridge was the epicenter of the Kern County Earthquake which registered 7.3 on the Richter scale.) Onward and northbound we traveled over Wheeler Ridge Rd. for 16 miles until reaching Hwy 223 toward Arvin, our gateway to the Tehachapi
Mountain range. We climbed upward and on past rows of laboring semi-trucks puffing up the steady grade. At mile marker 74 we turned left on Beno Rd., an unmarked, obscure road requiring me to exit our vehicle and flag down all drivers, knowing without doubt all would have missed the turn.
Once we were all gathered on Beno Rd., we started our wild and crazy drive onto Caliente Bodfish Rd., an obscure, infrequently traveled, undulating curvy road through the Tehachapi Mountains offering surprise after surprise to even the most experienced driver. No guardrails, few signs, steep gradients, sharp switchbacks, and narrow roads. That being clarified, I am so pleased to advise that our band of Porsches occasioned no issues other than facial cramps from a constant smile. Once we arrived at a point where, for a moment, the curves were in our rear view mirrors, we descended into the panorama of the Walker Basin deep in the heart of the Tehachapis. Located here is the 31,000-acre famous Rankin Dude Ranch, operated by six generations of Rankins and one of the oldest and largest family-owned ranches in California.
While cruising on this section of Caliente Bodfish, most were fooled into a sense of calm and wellbeing only to be awakened by the unexpected intrusion of some of the steepest descents and sharpest turns of the entire drive. The descent down the mountain toward the town of Lake Isabella offers spectacular vistas of the lake and surrounding communities. The very bottom of Caliente Bodfish, before the road deposits you onto the flat plains outside Lake Isabella, consists of multiple steep switchbacks, one after the other and absent guardrails. Once on the flats we continued a short distance to Nelda’s Diner for lunch where everyone had an opportunity to gather their composure and enjoy a fine lunch.
Post lunch, everyone was present and accounted for and we continued our drive up the road to Kernville and the Kernville Inn. In a short 12 miles we arrived at the Inn, our home for the night. Kernville is an idyllic small town located at the southern tip of the Sierra Nevada mountains at an elevation of 2,667 feet. In 1858, a gold rush led to the formation of a town called Rogersville, then Williamsburg and in 1863 it was renamed Whisky Flat and again renamed Kernville. The Isabella Lake project began in 1948. As a result, the entire town of Kernville was relocated to its present site, including the Kernville Inn.
The Inn was a quaint, well maintained, clean, and reasonably priced place to spend some quality time scenically located adjacent to the Kern River. To the best of my knowledge, everyone was quite satisfied with the accommodations and the time spent there. Our evening repast took place at the restaurant Ewing’s On the Kern. Reservations had been made in advance affording us a prime location in the dining room overlooking the river. The meal was great, the company was extraordinary, and the day’s challenging drive was on everyone’s mind.
The morning of the 20th was warm and sunny, assuring us another great drive ahead, though sadly, towards home. After wishing one another a safe drive back, most charted their own way home. All in all, the trip included a great, though challenging drive, sumptuous meals, and time spent with great friends. As always, this is all part of the SBR Porsche family experience.

June Ladies Luncheon
By Becky Jones and Lorraine Gray
The lovely Porsche Ladies were in luck for our June event, which was held at Becky Jones’ welcoming home in Agoura Hills. We had another spectacular California day. The weather was gorgeous, and 13 of us gathered outside on an early afternoon to enjoy the day. The covered patio could not have been a more perfect setting.
When we first arrived, we found seating on the patio, filled our glasses with sparkling lemonade, water, soft drinks, or a bit of nice Prosecco (which always makes us happy). After chatting and sharing what we had all been up
to lately, we went inside to a beautiful table laid with flowers and wonderful food. Our lunch consisted of selections from a fruit and veggie tray as well as a charcuterie table covered with a bounty of nuts, figs, apricots, crackers, and baguettes. Also, we chose from a wide variety of meats and cheeses accompanied by a medley of mustards and jams. And let’s not forget the candies and pastries that rounded out the meal. We then took our plates to the cloth-covered, flower-decorated tables set on the patio where we proceeded to enjoy our lunch and each other’s company. It was just a relaxing way to spend time with each other, visiting, sharing stories, travel plans, etc.
The planning and set up for the gathering were exciting, and all were enthusiastic and appreciative of the efforts. The cleanup was easy as everyone pitched in to help — it was a perfect example of many hands making light work.
Our Porsche Ladies’ soirees are wonderful opportunities to foster new friendships and allow the buds of growing friendships to blossom further. I would encourage everyone to host a gathering, and if you need help, just ask — there are so many generous and kind ladies in our group willing to lend a hand.
The next Porsche Ladies (and in this case, Porsche Gentlemen) event will be visiting Santa Barbara to experience the Grandeur of the Bellosguardo estate on Friday, August 9. Our September party will be at the home of Christy Simas, an international hiker! She has graciously offered her lovely Santa Barbara home, but space will be limited, so please look for the invitation through Signal and RSVP without delay. A nominal fee will be requested.
We look forward to many more events that include hosting in our homes, enjoying learning opportunities, exhibits, and traveling to exciting places, as we will in August. Event ideas are definitely needed. Please pass on your suggestions to Lorraine Gray, our intrepid leader.

Motorsport Moments
Story and Images by Robert & Lisa Watt
For Robert, blending a passion for photography and motorsports started a few short years ago. He has been photographing for more than 40 years and involved in and around motorsports at various levels since the late 1980s; it made sense to blend the two together.
What started out as covering local events for Der Auspuff, which provided the opportunity to photograph trackside at the Long Beach Grand Prix on assignment for the magazine, has also evolved into becoming a volunteer track photographer at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca.
For Lisa, becoming a volunteer track photographer at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca happened by chance, and she found a passion for photography she didn’t know she had.
Tagging along with Robert, she initially picked up the camera to help capture fans and moments in the paddock for the track, while Robert was doing the same and photographing trackside. Eventually, Lisa also developed an interest in learning more about photographing cars on track and has proven worthy of what it takes.
Volunteering as track photographers has provided us the ability to witness motorsport history and to make new friends in the motorsport community along the way, which is why we do it.
Being around motorsports is an exhilarating experience. Exploring the paddock always provides an up-close perspective to what is involved in preparing these engineered masterpieces for competition, and the ability to photograph trackside as that precision work-of-art rushes by at amazing speed is like nothing else.
A highlight this year so far was witnessing Porsche Penske Motorsports take their 100th race victory at the IMSA Motul Course de Monterey at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca.
Most of all, the opportunity to photograph and be around motorsports, while doing it together, provides the best moments of all.

DETAILS FOR PASO ROBLES EVENT
The October 16–17 Valentino Rossi’s Driveway Epic Drive, Luncheon, Paso Robles Overnighter Plus, Estrella Warbird Museum Event
By Lionel Neff
Fall is in the air, the kids are back in school, vacationers are back to work, and the onerous heatwaves are but a distant memory. It is the perfect time for a midweek thrilling drive through the hills and dales that make up the backcountry roads of Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Counties.
Day 1: This epic drive will take us over Hwy 154, also known as the San Marcus Pass, past Lake Cachuma currently filled to its brim after two consecutive heavy winters. The drive will take us through the Santa Ynez Valley to the quaint town of Los Olivos, the history of which dates back to the 1860’s. The name Los Olivos is a derivative from Rancho de los Olivos when in 1885 Alden March Boyd, a farmer from Albany, NY, purchased 157 acres of land and planted 5,000 olive trees. On our left you’ll see Mattei’s Tavern, originally built in the early years to provide lodging for people traveling by train and stagecoach. The town is now a mecca for olive oil and the wine enthusiasts featuring over 30 tasting rooms.
Just outside Los Olivos we’ll take a right turn onto Foxen Cyn Rd (AKA, Porsche Heaven) and the Wine Trail. With over 30 miles of undulating, sweeping curves and breathtaking views of the farms, wineries, and ranches that fill our senses with pure enjoyment, only to be challenged by the gleeful din from the cacophony of Porsche engines resolute in their intoxicating sounds as we dutifully go through the gears.
At the end of Foxen Cyn where Betteravia Rd continues, at the 67-mile marker, we’ll take a break at the Chevron Station on the right. From there we’ll take a short 17-mile jaunt on U.S. Hwy 101 to Arroyo Grande where we’ll head into the hills on Hwy 227 toward Lake Lopez. Just before Lake Lopez, at the 85-mile point, we’ll turn left onto Orcutt Rd., a backcountry road filled with flower producing farms, ranches, and more vineyards. Are there curves you might ask? Yes, but not too challenging. Toward the end of Orcutt Rd. we’ll approach the town of San Luis Obispo where we’ll get back onto U.S. Hwy 101 N with the Cuesta Grade in our sights. The Cuesta Grade was originally constructed in 1876.
At the bottom of the Cuesta Grade we’ll exit Hwy 101 onto CA Hwy 58 toward Santa Margarita. Hwy 58 will lead us north through oak-lined hillsides. At the 115-mile mark, we’ll steer our Porsches onto Hwy 229, the 7-mile distance known as “Rossi’s Driveway.” a tribute to the famous GP motorcycle racer and current F1 driver Valentino Rossi. I can assure you the namesake isn’t a tribute to Rossi’s smile. It is the PERFECT, I repeat PERFECT, Porsche-type road course, replete with inspiring, moderate-speed curves. At the end of the glorious 7-mile run, your passenger will implore you to wipe that smile off of your face. As you enter the town of Creston on the left side of the road, is The Loading Chute, our lunch stop. Reservations have been made for the outside patio for our luncheon complete with a wide choice of menu selections, including complementary side dishes and beverages. Menu selections include the following: tri-tip sandwich, chicken breast sandwich, Creston Club sandwich, and for the veggi’s, a the Chute Caesar salad. Before sitting down to lunch, congratulate yourselves for completing 122 miles of some of the best backroads Central California has to offer.
After lunch our troop of intrepid Porsche drivers will continue the journey through the back roads of San Luis Obispo County towards Paso Robles, our final destination at 138 miles. We’ll be lodging at the Paso Robles Inn. Open seating dinner reservations have been made at Buena Tavola Italian Restaurant next door to the Paso Robles Inn. The price for this event does not include the cost for dinner.
Day 2: Visit the Estrella Warbirds Museum located near the Airport at 4251 Dry Creek Rd., Paso Robles, CA. On display are fully restored and displayed military aircraft and military vehicles of a wide variety. A real treat is the Woodland Automobile collection. A vast display of collector cars from the distant and not too distant past.
This resplendent event is limited to 40 participants. The cost of this event is $55.00/person for the lunch, drive and Warbird Museum plus the usual $2.00 msreg fee. The above price does not include the hotel stay. Please make your reservation at msreg.com/pasoovernighter. The Paso Robles Inn has extended to our group a discounted rate of $199/night, plus a $15 parking fee. The hotel will be providing special parking for our group allowing us to park together. You will be required to book your hotel stay directly with the Paso Robles Inn at the internet link that will be provided at the msreg registration site. When you register for the hotel stay, you will automatically be provided with the special Porsche Club discounted price. Don’t deny yourself the pleasure of this event. Sign-up early to ensure your place. Keep in mind, so far this year, every SBR event has sold out.
