Revisiones IV: el cuerpo en la fotografía contemporánea Mexicana 2006-2013

M

uchas cosas han pasado y eso aquí lo hemos visto en estas Revisiones a la fotografía contemporánea mexicana, que tanto se ha empeñado por producir Patricia Conde Galería. Hace un año, entre mayo y julio de 2013, realizamos una recuperación de lo sucedido entre finales de los años ochenta y principios del siglo XXI respecto a las representaciones del cuerpo. Hoy continuamos con los primeros tiempos del siglo XXI, con autores que persisten en decir mucho a partir de éste. De su propio cuerpo o el de otros.

El cuerpo, lo sabemos, es recepción de memoria, que quiere decir de historia. Nuestras cicatrices cutáneas, siempre aparentes, y las laceraciones que no se ven, son parte de esa memoria. Nuestro cuerpo es historia. Que ahí está, profundamente, a veces recordándonos, evitando el olvido, el pasado que nos se va de nosotros. Se forja como tal a partir de que nos reconocemos a nosotros mismos, solitarios —o acompañados—, en el baño o en el espejo. También en una imagen fotográfica. Es una parte de nuestro testimonio que vamos dejando por ahí. Y que algunos (as) ven y otros no. O que algunos (as) no quieren ver. El cuerpo: sólo con él estamos siempre, hecho curioso y obligado. Irrenunciable circunstancia. Acaso a éste nunca lo traicionamos. O sólo en algunas ocasiones. Y vaya que sin posibilidad de engaño con él. Y, a veces, por momentos, le ponemos atención. No hay 7

salida de éste. Acaso por ello la fotografía ha sido el mejor documento para exhibirlo, mostrarnos a nosotros mismos. Nuestras desnudeces en múltiples sentidos se vuelven exhibibles, además de memoria.

Los creadores reunidos aquí dicen mucho de ello. Dígalo si no Pía Elizondo y Patricia Lagarde. Dos artistas que se han compenetrado en un ambiente íntimo. Sólo el de ellas. El libro de ambas, Diario 2003-2005, es un testimonio de dolor y de salvación. Y mientras Patricia documenta la transición del cáncer de seno de Pía entre las dos construyen una hermosa comunión. Un documento de soledad, ciertamente, de caída pero a su vez de recuperación. Es el caso igualmente de Bela Limenes, en quien es innegable lo que ya señalábamos: el cuerpo como soporte de una larga historia. De laceraciones y de fragilidades y, sin embargo, de fortaleza. En esa línea se encuentra Ángela Arziniaga. Esta creadora permanentemente ha recurrido a su cuerpo como receptáculo de sensaciones y preocupaciones. Su lenguaje visual se erige en sí misma. En El Génesis y las nuevas ideas (2012) elabora un ritual de despojamiento. Ángela, eternamente, en diálogo con su cuerpo. Que quiere decir con ella misma y sus obsesiones. Todas nuestras creadoras (es) valientes en sus enfrentamientos consigo mismas (os).

El ritual en solitario permanece en la mayoría de los autores (as). Esto no pue­de dejarse de lado, casi como un principio que ofrece la fotografía. Sea éste de trazos eróticos —la fugacidad corporal de Paty Banda, lo tenue y volátil de sus acabados—, o en la transitoriedad en íntima desolación de la serie Frágil (2009) de Saraí Ojeda. O bien Cannon Bernáldez quien en su serie Miedos (2006) hace un acto de expulsión de los temores. Otro acto valiente, también el de ella, como el de tantos creadores(as) aquí reunidos que no temen en-

frentarse a su circunstancia. O desde los espacios bucólicos, esos que busca y recrea Arturo Fuentes. Un veterano creador surgido de las filas del fotoperio­ dismo quien ha sabido reconstruir su mirada y su sentir desde otros ámbitos: lo sereno y lo apacible.

En esencia varios creadores aquí inciden en las mismas preocupaciones, y esencialmente se muestran desde sus pesadillas convertidos en sueños reconfigurados (digamos, Kenia Nárez, una joven que transforma las narrativas de los cuentos clásicos para darles un nuevo matiz, acaso con tintes siniestros pero sorpresivos), o bien con su amores (Daniela Matute). Esta última creadora, en Oda a mi madre, reconstruye un documento de amor filial. Asistimos a un espacio de calidez. Armónico y tan íntimo que el espectador pareciera volverse un intruso. Esto define a los creadores de hoy: el cómo su vida —y sus cuerpos— pueden traducirse en imágenes. Y ellos no sólo son eso —sus cuerpos— sino también la efigie que han edificado para sí mismos. Icono modifi­ cable según los vaivenes del espíritu.

Hay también mucho de clasicismo. Sin duda le corresponde a Rafael Galván regresarse a un pasado que es siempre tan actual. Alejado de los esquemas tradicionales del erotismo en el cuerpo (por ahí se encuentra también Jorge Camarillo) —ese que se ve a la vuelta de la esquina—, Galván convoca a todas las referencias reconocibles: Charles Nègre; a Robert Demachy, a Vallou de Vi­ lleneuve, a Auguste Belloc y a tantos otros que han formado nuestro imaginario sobre el cuerpo que viene desde el siglo XIX. ¿Y qué hay con Humberto Ríos, ese joven creador que parece convocar a las imágenes prefotográficas? Ríos realiza una obra en donde se perfilan las siluetas —oscuridad junto a oscuridad—. Eso viene desde lejanos tiempos, cuando las siluetas (silhouettes)—, 9

a falta de otro medio en donde se imprimiera lo corporal— se popularizaran en la década de los años treinta del siglo XIX. ¿Pero que hay tanto en Galván como en Ríos? ¿Un regreso al pasado? No necesariamente, aquí lo entenderíamos más como una reactualización, como una aceptación del pasado en el presente. La exhibición de una herencia visual siempre vital para su obligada revisión desde los tiempos presentes. Al respecto, Jain Kelly escribía: “Cuando uno mira una obra de arte, uno recrea. La obra exige la misma creatividad del espectador que la propia obra le ofrece”.1 Tenía razón.

Pero he ahí también a Rodrigo Maawad en una versión profundamente lúdica, con la transformación de los cuerpos. Egresado del cómic y de lo fantástico, Rodrigo recrea un universo alucinante de objetos y figuras corporales. Un mundo sin referentes, más que en los sueños más delirantes. Imágenes choque de una transformación de los cuerpos. El cuerpo aquí ya es otro: aprisionado y cambiado. Como si una plaga nos hubiera alcanzado. El cuerpo, es evidente, sigue siendo soporte de nuestros placeres y nuestros miedos.

Y he aquí que continuamos, entonces, con nuestras microhistorias. La del cuerpo, en los últimos años de nuestra producción fotográfica, es una de ellas.

Tema ineludible, y cambiable, desde los viejos tiempos hasta hoy. Como un ejercicio de revisión o de síntomas. Eso lo dejan ver los artistas hoy convocados.

Reviews IV: the body in Mexican contemporary photography, 2006-2013

uch has happened in contemporary Mexican photography. We have witnessed its unfoldings thanks to the efforts in bringing together the Revisiones (Reviews) series exhibitions at Patricia Conde Galería.

From May to June 2013, a comprehensive exhibition was showcased on renderings of the body spanning from the late 1980s to the early 21st century. This exhibition is a follow–up comprising early 21st century artists who place great emphasis in the body. Their own or a subject’s.

It is clear that the body is a repository of memory, and thus of history. The always-evident scars on our skin are part of such memory as well as the unnoticeable lacerations. Our body is also history. Its presence is deep, the body is there to remind us, to prevent us from forgetting the fleeting past. In the bathroom or before a mirror, in loneliness or next to someone, the body not only takes shape from our own recognition, but it is also shaped through a photographic image. The body provides evidence of our being there. Some can see it, some cannot. Some do not want to see it. The body: curiously and compellingly enough, we are always with it. It is an unavoidable circumstance. Perhaps we never betray it, maybe sometimes we do, and yet there is no chance

for deception. At times, at least at some brief moment, we pay attention to it.

There is no way out of the body. In that regard, photography has probably been the best means to exhibit it, the best means to show ourselves. In many ways, our nakedness is befitting to be exhibited and also becomes memory.

The artists featured in this exhibition well illustrate that. For instance, Pía Elizondo and Patricia Lagarde have blended themselves in an intimate atmosphere that is only theirs. Their book Diario 2003-2005 (Journal 2003-2005) bears witness of their pain and redemption. While Patricia registers the transitions of Pia´s breast cancer, a beautiful communion between the two is constructed. It is indeed a register of loneliness, of a fall, but also of a recovery. ­ Likewise, as mentioned before, it is undeniable that the body in Bela Limenes’ work is the basis of a lengthy history. Lacerations and frailties are also the basis of strength.

By the same token, Ángela Arziniaga has steadily used her body as a repository of sensations and worries. Her visual language emerges from herself. In El Génesis y las nuevas ideas, 2012 (The Genesis and New Ideas) she creates a ritual of relinquishment. She establishes a non-stop dialogue with her own body. Herself and her obsessions are her own language. These artists, our artists, bravely confront themselves. A solitary ritual is imprinted in the artists’ work in this exhibition. It is a principle that cannot be denied in photography.

Whether these be the erotic strokes of the corporeal fleeting nature that are part of Paty Banda’s soft and volatile finishing touches, or in the transitory intimate desolation of Saraí Ojeda’s series Fragil, 2009 (Fragile). In her Miedos (2006) (Fears) series Cannon Bernáldez carries out an exorcism of fright. A 13

brave stunt, not only for her, but for many other artists collected here, who are not afraid to confront their circumstances.

Or the pastoral spaces recreated by Arturo Fuentes. A seasoned photojournalist, Fuentes has managed to refocus his his eye and his feel from other fronts: to the serene and the peaceful.

Essentially, the same concerns touch most of the photographers here. They virtually show themselves from the realm of nightmares turned into reconfigured dreams (e.g., Kenia Nárez, a young woman who transforms fairy tale narratives into new aspects, perhaps with sinister but surprising hints). Love is also a starting point in the work of Daniela Matute, whose Oda a mi madre (Ode to my mother) reconstructs a portrayal of filial love. We sit in on a warm atmosphere in which the onlooker almost intrudes into a space filled with harmony and intimacy.

A this point, the lives and the bodies of these artists can be translated into images. They are not just bodies, but they are also the representation they have made for themselves. The fluctuations of the spirit turn the body into a changing icon.

Classicism is also present. In this case, Rafael Galván returns to a past which is more current than ever. Far from the traditional conceptions of a common body erotic (Jorge Camarillo also comes to mind), Galván summons recognizable sources: Charles Nègre, Robert Demachy, Vallou de Villeneuve, Auguste Belloc, and many other artists who have modeled our idea of the body since the 19th century.

Humberto Ríos is a young artist who seems to evoke early photographic images. His work consists of profiled silhouettes —darkness against darkness.

In the past, silhouettes were popular in the 1830s, —in the absence of another means to imprint the corporeal. Are Galván and Ríos returning to the past?

Not necessarily, their work is rather a revision, an update. An acknowledgement of the past in the present. They show a visual inheritance that is always vital for a compulsory review from the present. On the subject, Jain Kelly wrote: “When one looks at a work of art, one recreates it. The work demands the same creativity of the viewer that it gives him”.1 He was right.

Rodrigo Maawad presents a deeply playful version of transformed bodies. A graduate of the comic and fantasy, Rodrigo recreates a hallucinatory universe of objects and figures. A world whose only references are outrageous dreams.

Shock images of transformed bodies. The body here is another kind of body: a trapped, changed body. As if an epidemic had invaded us all. It is clear that the body is still the carrier of our pleasures and our fears.

And yet, we keep on with our little minihistories. The history of the body during the most recent years of photography production is one of those minihistories. As an unavoidable, changing topic from old times until today, the body gives way to a revisionism. This is what the artists of this exhibition allow us to see.

specializada desde 2009 en la fotografía contemporánea, Patricia Conde Galería es actualmente la única galería mexicana enfocada en promover prácticas fotográficas diversas realizadas por artistas mexicanos y extranjeros. La galería se interesa en propuestas sólidas, tanto en su originalidad como en su desarrollo creativo, incluyendo autores de trayectorias consagradas, medias, en proceso de crecimiento y emergentes.

Fundado y dirigido por Patricia Conde, el proyecto galerístico tiene la mi­ sión de promover de manera integral la fotografía contemporánea dentro del contexto artístico local e internacional. Así mismo, apuesta por difundir en México la obra de fotógrafos de otras latitudes del mundo.

Además de atender la participación ferial y colaboraciones museísticas e institucionales, la galería propone ser referencia para el coleccionismo cons­ tituido e incentivar aquél en el público joven. Así, Patricia Conde Galería de­ viene en una alternativa incluyente para el escenario fotográfico en México.

pecialized in contemporary photography since 2009, Patricia Conde Galería is currently the only Mexican gallery promoting diverse photographic practices produced by Mexican and foreign artists. It is interested in solid firms, in their creative development as well as in the originality of renowned, intermediate and emerging artists’ proposals.

Founded and directed by Patricia Conde Juaristi, the gallery project has the mission of unveiling Mexican Contemporary Photography in the international artistic sphere.

The gallery focuses in two main fields; on one side its participation in art fairs, and on the other side, through collaborations with museums and institutions. Our mission is that of protruding the photographic practices within the Mexican and international art market. Thus, Patricia Conde Galería establishes itself as an inclusive and independent alternative to the photographic scene in Mexico.
