SINCE

Welcome to the LONG BEACH EXPO

Greetings! We are so excited to welcome you to the Long Beach Expo – a tradition for collectors throughout Southern California and beyond. We proudly kick off another year of the Long Beach Expo, which began in 1964 and is held three times each year at the Long Beach Convention Center. Thousands converge here every expo to buy, sell, and trade collectibles. The Long Beach Expo is the largest show of its kind on the West Coast, drawing people from all over the United States.

In addition to hosting hundreds of vendors who deal in coins, banknotes, trading and sports cards, sports memorabilia, stamps, and so much more, the Long Beach Expo has unique attractions in store for everyone here. Among the highlights of this Long Beach Expo is the exhibition of the Tyrant of the New World, showcasing for the first time at this event its impressive collection of Mexican and Brazilian coinage from a fascinating age of exploration. One of the biggest events being held in conjunction with the show is the multimillion-dollar Heritage Auctions Signature Auction #1357, a favorite tradition that attracts active online bidding. Lot viewing will be ongoing at Booth 1002, with the sale occurring February 9 -12.

We are very proud to host the United States Mint on the bourse floor, offering collectors a rare West Coast opportunity to buy newly minted coins right from the source. Collectors can walk their mint-direct coins over to the PCGS at Booth #401 for onsite grading, ensuring their new acquisitions receive the best protection and to help ensure maximum value. Be sure to take advantage of onsite PCGS banknote grading for Express Service Level and above. All show services are available for U.S. and World coins.

Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA) at Booth #1059 will be accepting take-home submissions for cards, autographs and now Funko Pops! at LBE! Take-home submissions are accepted at the show and brought back to PSA headquarters for processing. Once completed, they then ship the submission back to you. Visit the submission lounge to get help filling out your submission form.

Have questions about your coins and sports memorabilia? We have just the folks for you! Our Meet the Expert sessions

with

you with a fantastic opportunity to have your favorite collectibles appraised and to speak one-on-one with the foremost experts in the world of collectibles. You can find out more about some of your favorite areas of the hobby in our Speaker Series at the “Collector’s Theatre,” which is on the bourse floor of Hall C. This free educational opportunity is being held on Friday only from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and covers a wide variety of topics, with seminars held by Jay Turner and his introduction to collecting Mexican coinage, David McCarthy speaking on “sleeper” coins, and a talk on how to increase revenue by selling on Whatnot hosted by Kevin Chen and Mike Barbieri of Whatnot and Seth Chandler of Witter Coin.

If you have any young collectors in your group, be sure to check out what’s going on from 10 a.m to 2 p.m. on Saturday. That’s when you’ll find our popular Kid’s Treasure Hunt offering cool prizes and fun trivia – please visit the information booth for more information and to pick up your treasure map! There are also Young Numismatist activities at Booth 458, which is just down the way from Kids Korner at Booth 453, with giveaways of stamps and a fun raffle.

Grownups can win prizes, too! There are drawings every day for valuable coins, banknotes, and sports memorabilia –but you’ve got to be present to claim your prize at 2:00 p.m. daily!

We hope you enjoy the Long Beach Expo! Please let us know if there’s anything we can assist with or that you want to see at future shows. We can tell you this – we’re already planning the details for our next show, including an incredible exhibit of shipwreck coins that will be docking in June. We’re pretty sure it will shiver some numismatic timbers.

Collection’s Historic Mexican And Brazilian Coins

At February Long Beach Expo

Tyrants of the New World exhibit features 197 superb-quality Latin American coins publicly exhibited together for the first time

Important early coins of Mexico and Brazil from the unparalleled Tyrant Collection are on public display together for the first time. Entitled “Tyrants of the New World,” this is the latest multimilliondollar exhibition in a multi-year series of different displays showcasing portions of the extensive and unprecedented Tyrant Collection. Owned by Southern California collector Dan O’Dowd, it is described as the world’s most valuable rare coin collection in private hands.

“The big exhibit will be divided into two distinct sections: The Tyrants of the Amazon and The Tyrants of Lake Texcoco,” explained Ira Goldberg, president of Goldberg Coins and Collectibles, Inc. in Los Angeles, California. Goldberg is one of the numismatic professionals providing guidance in assembling the wide-ranging Tyrant Collection of superb quality, historic U.S., World, and ancient coins.

“There has never been such an important public exhibit of Latin American coins in Southern California,” he stated.

The Tyrants of New World exhibit showcases how Latin America was divided between the Portuguese tyrants who ruled Brazil and the Spanish tyrants who ruled the rest of Latin America.

The Tyrants of the Amazon is a collection of coins issued by the tyrants who have ruled the Amazon. The objective of this portion of the set is to find the biggest, nicest-looking, highestcondition portrait gold coin for each tyrant.

The Tyrants of Lake Texcoco collection is a type set of coins from the Mexico City Mint. The objective is to find the finest representative of each coin denomination for each tyrant there. If there is more than one major coin design in a reign, then there is a representative of each denomination for each major design.

“The coinage from the many Spanish royal mints in Latin America were all very similar,” explained Goldberg. “The Mexico City Mint was chosen because it is the oldest and most productive Spanish mint in Latin America.”
