WELCOME TO THE LONG BEACH EXPO

Welcome to the Long Beach Expo! The oldest collectibles show on the West Coast opens its doors and greets all who have come to take part in this time-honored event. Since 1964, The Long Beach Expo has welcomed thousands to each of its triannual shows, with hundreds of dealers showcasing collectibles galore – from coins and banknotes to sports cards and Funko Pops! and so much more. There’s something for everyone here, with people from across the United States and beyond converging at the Long Beach Expo for this beloved Southern California tradition.

Along with the many dealers buying, selling, and trading in virtually every kind of collectible, we also have some exciting highlights that we know so many have been waiting for. One of the biggest attractions is the “Ship of Gold,” an exhibit featuring sunken treasures from the S.S. Central America. A partial replica of the 280-foot steam ship, which went down in a hurricane off the shores of the Carolinas in September 1857, anchors the dazzling multimillion-dollar array of rare gold coins, ingots, and other treasure retrieved from the shipwreck over the last 35 years.

We are excited to host the United States Mint on the bourse floor, where collectors can enjoy a rare West Coast opportunity to buy newly minted coins right from the source! Collectors can walk their mint-fresh coins over to the PCGS at Booth #401 for onsite grading, ensuring their new acquisitions receive the best protection and to help ensure maximum value. Be sure to take advantage of onsite PCGS banknote grading for Express Service Level and above. All show services are available for U.S. and World coins.

Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA) is at Booth #1059 and taking onsite card submissions through Thursday at 2:30 p.m. and drop-off submissions for cards until Saturday 3:30 p.m. Drop-off submissions are accepted at the show and brought back to PSA headquarters for processing. Once completed, they then ship the submission back to you. Visit the submission lounge to get help filling out your submission form, and for more information about PSA grading, please visit the PSA show page.

If you have questions about your coins, banknotes, and sports memorabilia, then we have the right folks here for you! Our Meet the Expert sessions with coin guru Steve Feltner, banknote specialist Philip Thomas, and Memory Lane sports connoisseur Dan Wulkan provide you with an incredible opportunity to have your favorite collectibles appraised

and to speak one-on-one with the foremost experts in the world of collectibles.

Any young collectors in your group? If so, then be sure to check out the Kid’s Treasure Hunt on Saturday, an interactive experience offering cool prizes and fun trivia from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Please visit the information booth for more information and to pick up your treasure map! There are also Young Numismatist activities at Booth 460.

We’ve got oodles of giveaways for the kids, but grownups can win prizes here, too! We have drawings every day for valuable coins, banknotes, and sports memorabilia – just make sure you’re present to claim your prize at 2:00 p.m. daily!

We want you to have a wonderful time at the Long Beach Expo! We are so glad you’re here and hope we get the chance to say hello to you. Please know we value your feedback and hope you’ll share your thoughts with us on what you’ve seen here at this expo and what you hope to see at future Long Beach Expos.

Sincerely,

5

SHIP OF GOLD

One of the most fascinating attractions ever to cruise the Long Beach Expo has dropped anchor at the show!

The S.S. Central America or “Ship of Gold” is here. Come see $15 million in shipwreck treasure, including rare gold coins, gold ingots, and other sunken artifacts from the ill-fated ship.

What’s the story behind the S.S. Central America and its gold treasure? The 280-foot-long sidewheel steamer ran routes between Central America and the eastern seaboard of the United States during the mid-1850s. In September 1857, S.S. Central America was ferrying 477 passengers, 101 crew, and 30,000 pounds of gold when it encountered a Category 2 hurricane off the Carolinas. The 105-mile-perhour winds from the storm severely damaged the ship’s sails on September 11, and the next day leaks in the ship led to the sinking of the S.S. Central America, claiming 425 lives.

Exactly 131 years passed when, on September 11, 1988, Columbus-America Discovery Group of Ohio deployed a remotely operated vehicle that discovered the wreckage of the S.S. Central America . Over the past 35 years, numerous

recoveries of gold and other items from the shipwreck have been brought to the surface, conserved, and sold at auction and in other marketplace settings. Some of the most impressive of these Gold Rush-era pieces include huge ingots of gold worth millions of dollars apiece and thousands of 1850s-vintage United States gold coins.

“There are few stories that have captured the hearts and minds of coin collectors, treasure seekers, and Gold Rush historians as has the tragic tale of the Ship of Gold,” said PCGS President Stephanie Sabin. “We are so fortunate that this incredible exhibit has returned to the Long Beach Expo, where show attendees will get to see these rare, recovered treasures right before their very eyes.” Sabin added, “It’s sobering to think of the tragic circumstances that brought these treasures to the floor of the Atlantic, yet amazing when you realize the long odds explorers beat to find and recover these pieces. Only imagine if these treasures could talk, the stories they would tell.”
