Letter from Abdullah Öcalan

Dear comrade Guzman, I am sending you this message through my lawyers. I know you and have been trying to follow your activities as good as I can. I am convinced that you are subjected to similar politics as those used against me and my people and that the ways that we have been caught are similar. The operation against you can also be regarded as a NATO operation. The fact that analyses of the Turkish state and the Turkish army often compare your and mine situation in terms of legal and polit ical aspects is an indication for this. It is also known that there are many similarities between the Middle East and Latin America. During my time in prison I have written extensively about capitalist modernity and my thesis that a democratic modernity should be emphasized as an alternative. I think this is not only relevant for the struggle of the Kurdish people but also for all oppressed people which are affected by the capitalist sys tem. I write my defences and books directed to the broad mass of the people. I regard it as important that everyone should be able to understand these ideas. That's why I prefer to use a plain and clear lan guage. Of course the topics that I discuss deserve a broader discussion and deeper analysis. I formulate the struggle of the Kurdish people as a struggle against the system under the paradigm of democratic modernity. Therefore we are waging not only a struggle for identity but a socialist struggle. Our gains shall be the gains of mankind. I send you my warmest greetings. I am convinced that we will meet one day as free human beings.
