This column will be dedicated to keeping Charolais members in touch with the people of the business. It will contain births, weddings, convocations and momentous anniversaries and events of note, but not high school graduations. Patenaude Inducted to MB Basketball Hall of Fame
Carolyn Patenaude, Sunshine Oak Charolais, of Holland, Manitoba, was inducted to the Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame. Carolyn was a member of the Treherne Collegiate Tigers Varsity Girls Basketball Team in 1995 when they won the MHSAA ‘A’ Provincial Championship. Carolyn is the third from the left holding the banner.
Weinbender — Christiansen Wed
Laura and Lane Christiansen, married on June 18. They reside in the Canwood area on his family farm, which includes bison and grain. Laura works for Grain Millers as a Crop Specialist - Projects Coordinator. Laura is a CCYA Alumni and daughter of LeeAnn and Carey Weinbender, Sliding Hills Charolais, Canora, Saskatchewan. DeGurses Win Sustainability Award
Mark and Charlene DeGurse received the award for The Royal’s Celebrating Sustainability program. Charlene wrote a 250 word essay about the sustainability of their Annuroc Charolais, Mooretown, operation and they were selected to receive $1,000 to go towards their continued efforts in sustainability, a $250 Loblaws gift card and public recognition at the 100th Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto.
It’s a Girl!
Justin and Hayley Robertson, of Bar J Charolais, Amaranth, Manitoba, welcomed their baby girl, James Holly Robertson, at home on September 5, weighing 7 pounds 3 ounces. Justin is a CCYA Alumni. Proud grandparents are Clint and Lynn Robertson and great-grandparents Jack and Gloria Robertson. It’s a Girl!
Jack, Lauren and Charley Oattes, of Oattes Cattle, in Cobden, Ontario, are delighted to welcome a new baby girl to their family. Rosalie Inez Oattes was born September 1. Jack is a CCYA alumni and proud grandpa is Craig Oattes.
Evans Convocated
Shelby Evans, daughter of Layne and Paula Evans, of Horseshoe E Charolais, Kenaston, Saskatchewan, convocated from the University of Regina with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. She completed her National licensing exam and is working at the Children’s Hospital in Saskatoon. Shelby is a CCYA alumni and former president of the National Board.
Ormiston — Hibbitt Wed
Lynsay Ormiston, daughter of Terry and Monica Ormiston, of Southview Farms, Courtice, Ontario, married Matthew Hibbitt, in Bethany, on September 24th, 2022, at a remote farm location surrounded by family and friends. Lynsay and Matthew live in a rural town called Janetville. Matthew works fulltime as an operator running a directional drill putting in gas lines for communities. Lynsay works fulltime as an Educational Assistant. When they have any free time, they are both helping around Southview farms. Lynsay is a CCYA alumni.
Skeels Named Miss Rodeo Canada 2023
Mackenzie Skeels, Rimbey, Alberta, was named Miss Rodeo Canada 2023. Mackenzie will representing Canadian Professional Rodeo on a National and International level. She is the daughter of Dan and Karen Skeels, Anchor D Ranch Simmentals and Charolais, Rimbey, Alberta. It’s a Girl!
Sierra Lorraine was born October 1 weighing 7 lb 4 oz, to Natassja By and Adam Goddard of St. Albert, Alberta. Natassja is a CCYA Alumni. Proud grandparents are Helge and Candace By, Regina, Saskatchewan.
Wielgosz - Youth in Philanthropy Honouree
Ava Wielgosz (centre) was a Youth in Philanthropy honouree at the 2022 National Philanthropy Day Awards celebration for her continued support of Saskatchewan’s Jim Pattison Chldren’s Hospital Foundation.
Ava bakes and sells cheescakes during the holiday season and has raised thousands of dollars to support sick and injured kids receiving specialized care. This year, Ava’s goal is to make 100 cheesecakes to raise $3,500. Your Independent Grocer in Melfort supplies the ingredients. Ava is a CCYA Alumni and the daughter of Stephen and Kristin Wielgosz, Yellow Creek, Saskatchewan. Kinsmen Foundation Honoured U of S Agriculture Students
It is a long-standing 40-year tradition that every year Telemiracle is held in Regina or Saskatoon, a group of College of Agriculture students (Agros) from University of Saskatchewan, push a bed from one city to the other raising a substantial amount of money for the telethon before and along the way. This year, they had a goal to raise $50,000 and blew past by raising a record $88,000 for TeleMiracle 46, and to date have raised over $400,000, making a huge difference for so many Saskatchewan residents.
Charolais students participating in the event were Justin Harcourt, Quill Lake, and Matt Trefiak, Edgerton, AB. Mason Beck, Milestone, also participated and his dad, Wade, joined to be one of the Ag Grads in a father-son leg of the event. Mason was among the Agros accepting the award, pictured on the left in the back row.
