My last editorial in the March Connection was written in the middle of February before most of the spring bull sales. For 41 years we have been keeping track of all the bull sales across Canada and this spring saw the most sales reported (tied with last year) at 103. This was the second most bulls sold, the second highest average and second highest gross we have recorded only slightly behind the spring of 2021 figures.

Until next time, Helge

In this issue, you will see breeders showing their appreciation to you, the commercial bull buyers, for your support. You will also see some of the female sales happening this fall. There are great opportunities for new purebred Charolais breeders right across the country. You can also check out the sale catalogues on the Charolais Banner website. If you have any questions, please contact Robbie Chomik, or me, and we will help you with your purchasing whenever possible.

Here’s to a profitable future in the cattle business.

The cattle market in Australia has been at record highs the past year and bull sales have followed suit. A recent Charolais sale in Central Queensland saw 41 bulls offered and sold with a top of $36,000 and averaging $19,244. One in New South Wales saw all 27 bulls sell to average $24,204 with a top of $65,000. The cow numbers in Australia are down, like here in North America, due to drought and those that

if the early sales are any indication. It looks like the prices this fall are getting to where they need to be to cover the increase in costs of equipment, fuel etc. Some market reports at the beginning of September are showing good big calves at over $2,000, cull cows at $2,200 and bulls over $3,600 in some cases. Some of the yearlings coming off grass at 1,000 lb have also been above $2,200.Thefeedlots are current, the packers are still making money and the consumers are still buying beef at these higher prices. Combine this with a robust export market out of North America and the smallest cow numbers in over a decade and it looks like this should last for some time. Let’s hope so.

The latest advancement in precision technology for beef cattle genetics is to measure DNA of the animal directly using what is called a high density SNP (snip) chip. With this technology we can look directly at an animal’s DNA and analyse

To increase the precision of prediction, the Canadian Charolais Association implemented Whole Herd Enrolment or reporting over 20 years ago. Contrary to the traditional approach where only the good cattle were registered and reported, in the WHE program, all calves are reported, to provide a more accurate picture of the DNA present in each animal in the breed. An analogy would be if you only turned your yield monitor on in the good spots in a field, the end results would not be reflective of the actual yield or help to identify agronomic issues. Same case in point with complete reporting of cattle performance.

Each EPD was presented with an accuracy value that indicates how certain we are about the animal’s DNA prediction. As we add more data, the accuracy approaches closer to 1.00. For a young, virgin bull, most accuracies are in the 0.20 to 0.40 range, if the breeder has done a good job in submitting information. This does not mean that an EPD is inaccurate, rather it measures the precision with which we are able to identify the animal’s DNA. As we obtain more information on offspring that contain a sire’s DNA, we can do a better job of determining what DNA he possesses and can pass on, and this is reflected in a higher accuracy (precision) value.

use of term often conjures images of global positioning satellites, self driving tractors, rate controllers and other technological advances. In many cases, we may feel left out as beef producers, however, breed associations and genetics providers have been working on this challenge for many years and have some great tools to introduce added precision into sire selection decisions.

First, it is important to understand that what we are concerned with when we are purchasing seedstock is their DNA. In other words, we are interested in the traits that a bull will pass on to his calves, more than the traits that the bull exhibits himself. It is siring superior calves that makes a bull good.

Early on, many bull buyers used tools such as looking at birth weight or adjusted weights and within herd indexes or ranks. These tools were reasonably effective, particularly when selection was for traits like growth that are moderately heritable. The bull’s performance relative to herdmates or peers provided some indication of the DNA he was carrying and could pass on to offspring. This was a relatively crude measure.

100,000 markers or pieces of DNA. This information can then be included in the EPD evaluation, along with pedigree and performance information. While the SNP chip does not analyse every piece of an animal’s DNA, it does provide insights roughly equivalent to having 15 to 40 progeny reported (depending on the trait). The resulting GE (Genomically Enhanced) EPD may not change from the traditional EPD, but the accuracy or precision of the prediction will be greatly improved. This in turn means that we are able to more precisely target our selection goals and have fewer surprises or outright failures in our breeding decisions.

The use of DNA testing and GE EPD allows us to greatly speed up our selection process as we can obtain a lot of information at a very early age. An animal could have a DNA test equivalent to having 20 progeny completed at 1 day of age. To obtain this same level of precision knowledge the animal would have to be two-years old at best and, in the case of a female, somewhere north of 20 years Breeders, old.breed associations, and DNA companies have made significant investments in precision agriculture for beef cattle. producers and customers of the farms we visited. There was a great mix of people and a chance to visit with many not on the full tour. For many of us, we got to visit with breeders from the UK that we met on previous Congresses and some we hadn’t seen since the last Congress held in the UK in 2012.

The 2022 World Charolais Congress was held in the United Kingdom from July 7th to 18th covering all four countries of the UK. This was the first Congress since 2018 in Sweden, as Covid 19 cancelled the 2020 one. There were about 100 registered guests from 12 countries, plus local breeders, beef

A welcome reception and supper were held the evening of July 7th at the Hilton Heathrow Hotel a short train ride and walk from the arrival airport. It was great to get caught up with everyone registered on the Congress and get some rest for a busy 10 days ahead.

PROFILE – WORLD EVENT

Editor’s note – Over the years from views on social media, we have been asked by commercial producers about some of our travels to other countries and what the cattle are like. We decided to run this in the Charolais Connection to show you some of the highlights from this summer’s Congress. The World Charolais Congress is held every two years and in 2024 Canada will be hosting this international event. This is a condensed version of the article we ran in the August Charolais Banner. We hope you enjoy it.

After breakfast, we boarded two buses and headed north about 60 miles to the Cayler Farm, owned by the Barker Family. In Charolais for nearly 50 years, Greta Barker has been on many Congresses, and we got to see her family farm run by David and Louise Barker. David is also on the British Charolais Society board. Running about 40 cows, 1000 acres of arable crops and a haylage enterprise, they have a very good operation with set goals on what they want in their herd. When we arrived, we were given a 52-page booklet that had every animal listed on its own page, just like a sale catalogue, with their pedigree, EBVs and pedigree of the calf, if there was one at side, along with a QR code that you could scan to go to the British society herd book.

A parting gift package was presented to everyone including a notepad, thankyou card, fridge magnet, pen and fudge

Numbers were sprayed on the animals that correlated to the animals in the booklet with all their information.

After a great pig roast lunch, we boarded the buses for a two-hour ride to the Kenilworth Castle & Elizabethan Garden. Once one of the country’s most formidable medieval fortresses, the castle was later transformed into a spectacular Elizabethan palace. From there we travelled to Telford and checked into our hotel for two nights.

Off at 8 a.m., our first stop of the day was a two-hour bus ride to Oakchurch Farm, near Staunton on Wye, ran by Jeremy Price another British Charolais board member. Besides the small pedigree Charolais and Angus herds, this operation is quite an enterprise. They operate a 100-acre fruit business, including strawberries, cherries, raspberries and a few runner beans. Jeremy’s brother also runs a retail farm shop with a butchery, fruits, dry goods, ice cream stand and much more. With around 100 immigrant seasonal workers to manage, I believe the cattle are a relaxing break from the business for Jeremy. Calving ease has been stressed in their herd with the aid of a calving ease bull called Blelak Digger, who was marketed successfully around the world over the past decade.

Stunning beauty on the Welsh border area

Weight guessing contest on this first calf, three-year-old and her April heifer calf from the Teme show string. Just over 1,200 kg (2,640 lb) was their combined weight

After lunch we headed for Teme Charolais just inside the Welsh border. This is a very close family operation run by the Corbett Family. This farm is right on the border with half of the farm in Wales and half in England. A 20 head cowherd of Charolais along with 20 recipients, a small herd of Limousins and a flock of sheep, this family likes to show and have had good success doing it. In 2018, they won Supreme Overall Champion at the Royal Welsh Show. Their show string was on display getting ready for the Royal Welsh show which proved successful with them winning Interbreed Junior Female and Pairs Champion. After afternoon tea we were back on the bus for some more spectacular scenery on the way back to our hotel in Telford.

Collection demonstration at Twemlows Stud

Sunday morning, we were on the bus to go to Twemlows Stud & AI Centre run by brothers Edward and Richard Matson. This is an incredible horse breeding and collection operation with some leading technologies in play. On the stud side, we watched a stallion being collected and were walked through the barns with some top end stallions. From jumping to dressage horses, to rare breeds, it is an incredibly well managed operation that ships semen around the world, both fresh and frozen. They have a very extensive stud book with ones that have semen for sale. On the breeding side, they can house and breed mares, foal them or send them to their owners when confirmed pregnant. We were given an ultrasound demonstration checking the heats and pregnancies of mares. They also do embryo transfer and cloning if you want. They can clone your cat for £35,000, your dog for £55,000 or your horse for £75,000. They are also storing cells from endangered species in hopes of protecting them from becoming extinct in the future. Nature’s SAFE is a registered charity that is leading this project. It was a very interesting stop.

Live horse ultrasound demonstration at Twemlows Stud

From there we were off to York to check in for two nights with a bit of free time to check out this beautiful city.

The Shambles in Historic York

International Annual General Meeting and a couple of seminars were held the next morning and afternoon with mainly the voting delegates from each country in attendance. The rest of the group were offered a walking tour of historic York followed by free time to explore the city on their own. Gavin Hill, of the Scottish Agricultural College, spoke of the challenges and solutions he sees for the livestock producers with a Charolais slant to what he feels the breed in the UK needs to do. He talked of beef cow numbers being down, but dairy cows up being bred to beef bulls, so beef calf numbers are up. He sees Charolais and Limousin numbers being bred to dairy cows declining because of calving, while being replaced by British Blue and Angus because of shorter gestations.

Our first stop the next day was at Kersknowe Charolais near Kelso, just inside the Scottish border. John Jeffrey and his family operate a 1700 acre mixed arable, livestock, grain, potatoes, rape, cattle and wintering sheep. Part of the farm is rented from the Duke of Roxburghe, as many in the area are. John’s dad, Jimmy, started the Charolais herd in the late 1960s, so this herd of 90 cows has been going for a long time. When we arrived, we were presented with a full size, 92 page, full colour catalogue with all the herd listed with pedigree, EBVs, calving history on the cows and a QR code to scan if you wanted more information.

British Charolais Society Chairman, Allen Drysdale brings greetings at the supper at the Great Yorkshire Show

Tuesday, July 12th, saw us check out of the hotel and be on the buses by 6:30 to beat the traffic into the Great Yorkshire Show. This is a huge outdoor, four-day show with acres of retail displays, eating venues and about 80,000 people who pass through over the course of the event. Horses, dogs, many breeds of sheep and cattle were shown and displayed. With the Congress being there, it was designated the British Charolais National Show. It was interesting to see what they are looking for in the show ring, which isn’t always what you see out in the fields. 99% of the Charolais are horned and they have been selected for more frame, meat and power than we have in other parts of the world. Most also breed their heifers to calve at three, so the cows are bigger and more impressive to their customers. After a formal dinner we were on the buses to our next hotel at Woolsington. It was a very long day, but very interesting.

Bull calf at Roscoe Farms

From this big hill at Roscoe Farms, you could see Edinburgh in the distance

After a night in Peebles, we were off to Roscoe Charolais near Gorebridge. They only run a few pedigree Charolais but have 350 crossbred commercial cows. They calve about 2/3 in the fall and 1/3 in the spring. Mark and his brother, Michael Ross, have a 1,000 acres which they cover. Their commercial cows start with a Holstein x Belgian Blue and then Limousin. The result is crossed with Charolais for a terminal animal. There are some big hills that we were taken over with some long reaching views, from where you could see Edinburgh. After a hamburger lunch, we were off to Allanfauld Charolais, at Kilsyth.

After lunch we headed to Swalesmoor Charolais owned by Danny Sawrij. Danny is a great businessman with many businesses outside the farm, but his passion is farming. He says, “Agriculture is an addiction, and you want it in your everyday life”. They run 30 Charolais, 25 Limousin, 100 Luing cows, 420 commercial cows and 1200 3/4 bred Texel ewes over farms in three areas covering 3,500 acres. With massive barns, all the sheep are lambed inside and finished on property. They also aim to finish most of the cattle at the home farms as well and send them directly to slaughter.

Danny has a very sharp pencil, and his management style is different from many. He calves the cows at 24 months and showed through the tour that you can do that, and the cows still grow, and at the end he has one extra calf to show for it. Supper in the barn included a live band and some time to dance a bit after.

Archie MacGregor and family, along with son John, run a big hill farm with Charolais, a few Limousin, some commercial cows and pedigree Scottish Blackfaced, Texel and Bluefaced Leicester sheep. They have had good success with their Charolais over the past 50 years, but probably more with the sheep having sold a Blackfaced ram for £130,00 (about $200,000 CAD) in the past. Great stockmen, who were one of the few who calve their heifers at 24 months to try to keep the size down a little on their wet soils. Our supper included beef, Yorkshire pudding and skirlie (a traditional Scottish dish), with some Scottish background music in their shed, before we were off to Gretna Green for the night.

Marriage anvil at Greta Green

We got to spend most of the morning looking around Gretna Green which is a famous place for runaway brides from England. In the middle of the 18th-century, English law stated couples had to reach the age of 21 before they could marry without their parents’ consent and their marriage had to take place in a church. In Scotland, you could marry on the spot in a simple “marriage by declaration or handfasting ceremony” only requiring two witnesses. This soon led to thousands of young couples running away to marry over the border. It is owned by the Houston family, also Charolais breeders, who have turned this historic blacksmith shop into a tourist and wedding destination for visitors from around the world. Candace and I visited with Lucy Houston and there are now 16 chapels, which do 4,000 wedding per year and there are 900,000 visitors to their Gretna Green establishment. This family business has grown over the past 130 years to include a museum, gift shops and hotels.

From there, we travelled to Solwayfirth Charolais owned by Ian and Dot Goldie and family. The herd has 30 pedigree Charolais cows, which was reestablished in 2001 after they lost all their 80 pedigree Charolais and their 400 ewes in the Foot & Mouth epidemic. Besides the Charolais cows, they have 120 breeding commercial females. Their commercial mix is Charolais/Shorthorn, Limousin/Saler females. They have 280 acres with 50 acres of barley and 80 acres cut for sileage and the rest grass. The grain and straw are all used on the farm, and they try for two cuts of sileage, with an average of 8 to 10 tons/acre, so they can be self sufficient.

Due to a ferry mix up, instead of taking the 7:30 pm across to Northern Ireland, we were on a 10:30 one which made for a very long day and short night, but there was plenty of time to visit or sleep on the boat. We checked into our final hotel in Belfast for the next three nights.

Saturday we were off to the Castlewellan Show about an hour out of Belfast. This one day show again had many cattle, horse and sheep judging. The Charolais show was about 50 head with the judges being respected Charolais breeders from Wales including the current British Charolais Society President (ex-officio) Gareth Roberts. After the show it was back to the hotel and a longer night’s sleep.

When the herd is gathered, weather conditions, manpower and combining the best times for several vaccines will ideally determine when to vaccinate.Aswelearn more and more about genetics, there are specific genetic markers that make cattle more or less susceptible to the different disease conditions and in the future this will help us select cattle that develop better protection to disease. The heritable component of resistance to parasites is also quite high and as mentioned, keeping parasite levels low enhances the immune response when you vaccinate.

Charolais Connection • Fall 202256 HERD HEALTH

We reduce the morbidity and mortality from the diseases for which we vaccinate. Also I challenge everyone to try to reduce their weaning stress by doing several things. Two stage with nose flaps or fenceline weaning, and calves introduced to creep feed. Some purebred calves are big enough and if they have had creep feed in the pasture they pretty much wean themselves. The cows miss the calves rather than vise-versa. Use a weaning gate when sorting as this can be a time saving step and is easy to do. Look up the video “Efficient and Novel Method for Sorting Cow-Calf pairs” by Joe Stookey. This method could be worked into most producers yards. It saves time, stess and frustration at weaning but also when separating for synch programs, etc. The video is only a couple minutes

In Canada, the vaccines have to undergo rigorous testing for safety and efficacy, as well as duration of immunity. When giving any vaccine from any company, there is always the possibility (although rare) of an allergic reaction, so always have epinephrine, dexmethasone on hand when vaccinating your herd. There may be a genetic or heritable component to allergic animals, so when allergic reactions occur, they often involve several animals.

Vaccine Efficacy (Effectiveness)

biosecurity on our farms and ranches. The principle of raising immunity against the diseases we will or are likely to encounter is a very good one, but many other factors come into play. This article will hopefully explain what other management decisions and procedures we can use to help improve the effectiveness of our vaccination program. Vaccines can never be 100% protective but they will always help lessen the degree of infection or the percentage that contract the disease. This article will focus on primarily calfhood vaccinations but the same theories can be applied to other age groups and other species. Whenever we maximize vaccine protection, we ultimately reduce sick cattle and treatment costs of antibiotics and chronics are reduced.

Anytime a clinical or subclinical (hidden) disease is present, the response to vaccines will be lower. Animals cannot develop protection if they are dealing with another ailment. For all the immune pathways to function, mineral and vitamin status must be good as well.

In spite of doing all the things mentioned previously, you could still get overwhelming exposure to infective organisms and still get disease. Vaccinating is again not a 100 percent guarantee but the clostridials are the closest to complete protection and it is rare veterinarians ever hear of cattle vaccinated with clostridials developing blackleg for instance. Cattle, as we all know, are very susceptible to respiratory disease and in one large study in the US comparing two broad spectrum (viral as well as bacterial causes of pneumonia) vaccines on ultra highrisk recently weaned calves, they still needed to treat upwards of 20% of the calves for respiratory disease. The reasons for this are multiple. Timing was not ideal as calves were ..continued

long and is worth a look.

Roy Lewis DVM

Ideally, if we could time vaccinations two to four weeks before the maximum exposure to a disease, that would be ideal, so do the best you can with the management system you have.

Weather conditions, although they cannot be controlled, it is best to avoid

The immune systems of your livestock must be functioning at peak performance in order for a protective response to occur. Several things affect the immune system. Those in our management control are things like stress in the form of housing (crowding), nutrition (animals with a poor body condition will not mount an immune response. An oftenneglected problem of parasitism (either internal or external parasites) greatly taxes the immune system. Internal parasites greatly tax the immune system in the form of the animal trying to mount an immune response to get rid of the parasites. By making sure your livestock are close to parasite free greatly enhances the protection from vaccines. Cattle that have high levels of coccidiosis or cryptosporidiosis also tax the immune system and by deworming cattle you will often find that indirectly these two protozoa that primarily affect young calves can be reduced as well.

vaccinating in inclement weather. For one thing, it is harder to handle the vaccines properly and swellings and abscessation are much more frequent after vaccinating in rain, snow, or very dusty conditions.

The BRM suite of programs is a critical piece of Sustainable CAP. The announced changes are intended to enhance sector resiliency, so that producers can better “anticipate, mitigate and respond to risks,” which is consistent with FPT Ministers’

which conflicts with the goal of simplifying AgriStability. CCA believes there are more effective and impactful ways to incentivize environmental stewardship on Canadian farms and ranches.

An environmental objective has also been added to BRM programming. There is now an environmental cross-compliance component for larger farms wanting to participate in the AgriInvest program. In addition, further avenues will be explored to integrate climate risk and readiness into BRM programs. We are concerned this may make an already complex suite of programs even more complicated,

On July 22, 2022, Canada’s federal, provincial, and territorial (FPT) agriculture ministers announced $500 million in new funds for the Next Agricultural Policy Framework, to be known as the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership (Sustainable CAP). This marks a 25 per cent increase from the previous Framework.Hereisasnapshot of the notable policies for Canadian cattle producers announced in Sustainable CAP: Business Risk Management (BRM)

Canadian Cattle President’sAssociationReport

The AgriStability program remains a cornerstone of the BRM suite. The payment compensation rate was raised from 70 per cent to 80 per cent at an estimated cost of $72 million. The program’s payment trigger remains unchanged at 70 per cent and its payments cap out at $3 million. However, an increased compensation rate is a big step in the right direction and builds on the actions taken in March 2021 to drop the reference margin limit (RML). We are awaiting to hear details on the consultation process that will take place with industry on the review of AgriStability and how it can be improved to make it faster, simpler, and more predictable.

With the Canadian Agriculture Partnership (CAP) set to expire within the next year, our board members and policy team have worked hard alongside our provincial members to advocate for enhancements to programming that would benefit cattle producers from across Canada. We took every opportunity possible throughout the consultation process to share our ideas. Key policy priority areas that we focused on included business risk management (BRM), the environment, animal health, and research and innovation.

Research & Innovation

As cattle producers, we understand the importance of implementing best management practices on our farms and ranches. As a result, we have advocated for direct payments to primary producers for the Ecological Goods and Services (EG&S) we provide. We were pleased to see the announcement of the Resilient Agricultural Landscapes Program (RALP), which comes with $250 million dollar investment and aims to provide incentives to agricultural producers for native grassland conservation efforts, perennial cover activities, and regenerative agricultural practices. The devil is in the details and the specifics of RALP remain unknown. In advance of the details being developed, CCA will advocate to ensure the program meets the intended objectives and benefits beef producers from across Canada.

We were disappointed to see that making Livestock Price Insurance Program (LPIP) a nationally available, permanent program was not included in the initial Sustainable CAP framework. Attention must be paid to expanding the availability of LPIP and reducing associated premium costs, similar to what is done in other sectors. LPIP is an especially important tool in supporting our next generation of cattle producers, as it helps increase their ability to secure financing and survive market downturns. We will continue our advocacy efforts on this front.

Advocacy is a big part of what we do and how we communicate recommendations to policymakers matters. The Canadian Cattle Association (CCA) takes a team approach, and we strive to share how the current and emerging issues can impact the various sectors within our industry. Our goal is to always bring workable solutions to government for their consideration.

The 25 per cent increase in the funding envelope is welcome news for research and innovation in the sector. We have advocated for continued investments in research programs aimed not only at key environmental challenges, but also enhancing productivity are critical. This is a key ingredient to the success and sustainability of our sector.
