Pleasantdawn Charolais 23rd Annual Bull Sale

Page 1

Saturday, March 15, 2025– 2 PM, at the farm, Oak Lake, MB

On behalf of my family I would like to invite you to our 23rd Annual Sale. First I would like to thank everyone for your support! It’s been a real pleasure working with you over the years. I’ve met so many great cattlemen that I keep on learning from! I really appreciate the friendship that I’ve made over the years!

My whole life has involved cattle and I’ve never missed a calving season. From calving out comercial cattle to eventually going 100% purebred, there has always been a constant and that’s calving ease, as I’m out there being the one calving them out. BW obviously matters but is not everything, as how they are built is so important. Calving ease is a must on our farm and length of spine is a 100% must with muscle development. Length of spine is so important for us as a cow calf producer, to the feedlot producer, to the packer, as every inch makes us all money.

Our herd is built on a maternal foundation with milking, longevity and fertility being the utmost importance. I know over the years having those fertile cows that just always calve on thier own and get back in calf are the ones that make me money. It’s not really measured but probably the most valuable asset a guy can have.

As we have hit record setting years for calf prices I’ve sure noticed and have had customers tell me how they were happy with the 2000 plus dollar calves but also how the Charolais calves brought 300 to 500 dollars more. That’s huge even on 10 head. The 550 weights are good but the 650 to 700 were the premium and Charolais will give you that with the least inputs. Knowing the cost of inputs this year, we sent some calves to test feed efficiencies through grow safe systems. As expected, Charolais excelled! For more information on the feed efficient verified genetics, feel free to contact me.

The offering in this 23rd Annual sale is of high quality once again. There are bulls here in white, tan or red that will work for the purebred industry, or the most discriminating commercial producers. They have bulls that would work on British bred commercial heifers, to bulls that have all the performance you could want. They have many outcross pedigreed bulls that would work in the vast majority of purebred operations. Many of the bulls are homozygous polled, if that is what you are looking for, and they have paid great attention to having good EPDs with some definite curve bending numbers.

The number of bulls that have sold into purebred operations over the years is also a testament to the quality of the offering. Many of the bulls in the sale are from home-raised bulls which they have drawn semen from before selling them. This has allowed them to build stronger pedigrees, incorporating their top cow families to increase the consistency of calving ease, maternal strengths,

We have different pastures ranging from slough pastures to sand hills with cactus growing on it, and some really good grass pasture. We use 205 DW instead of WW because the date of weaning and the birth date can make the weight change a lot. Obviously, with the same good genetics on different pastures, we can have a variety of 205 weights. With the benefits of EPDs, we can use them as a tool to improve our genetic base. So make sure to use every tool you can to increase the genetic potential of your herd.

Feel free to phone or contact me for any questions, as I enjoy visiting and talking cattle anytime.

Sincerely Trent Hatch

performance and in many cases outcross pedigrees to much in the industry. Also, when picturing these bulls, found the disposition to be excellent.

The sale is a video sale, held in their heated shop with the bulls displayed just outside. So, come early as the bulls won’t be coming through the ring. You are welcome to come to the farm and view the operation and the bulls anytime prior to the sale.

The sale will be broadcast live on DLMS.ca, so if you can’t make it to the sale, you can watch and bid online. Be sure to register early if you are using this service.

PLEASANTDAWN LADY 21D 7.1

A few years ago I wanted to flush a cow whose genetics knew well. decided to flush Pleasant Dawn Flora 72H for her feet, temperament and consistent early gestation. This year she had a Governor bull calf 12 days early, performance with top milking and teats with dark pigmentation. Top and bottom going back for 4 generations every one of her sires had calving ease to performance with strong maternal traits. Vessel crossed really well with Flora adding even more depth of rib and volume and keeping the muscle with smooth front and nice hip! Generations of genetic lineage for calving ease to performance with maternal traits and structural soundness for consistent profitable genetics. I’ll be keeping some semen on this guy, confident that his progeny will be like him adding more weaning and yearling weight and thus improving his WW and YW EPD once his data is entered. Vessel is a top herdsire and I’m already excited to get lots of his progeny! Retaining 1/4 semen interest.

I’m down to 3 straws of Vessel semen so you won’t see many more direct sons from him. This guy has the extra meat in his hip and extra wide top. Excellent feet and temperament, don’t miss out on one of the only opportunities to get a Vessel sired calf with the PD Prada on the mother’s side.

PLEASANT DAWN GIZMO is the real deal when it comes to calving ease! I’ve never helped a heifer calve to Nero and I’ve never had anyone tell me they helped a heifer calve to Serenity! know eventually things happen but that’s incredible calving ease! It’s not often you get that consistent calving ease from top to bottom, but it’s also really rare to have that heifer bull with Muscle! His Ultrasound data was awsome with 3.9 IMF, 15.6 inch ribeye and an incredible 67% lean meat yield, all this at 11 months. From the cow calf producer, to the feedlot, to the Packer, with that 67% LMY to the plate with his marbling, this guy has it all covered! All these stats and his genomic EPDs that all line up together has never happened with that low of a BW with a superior phenotype. Also as an added bonus, you’ll get solid colours with these blood lines. Check out his 3/4 brother 173M, lot 4. With Nero and Serenity, I’ve never had broken colours. GIZMO is the heifer bull I’ll still be using 20 years from now with his calving ease! Retaining 1/4 semen interest.

Pleasant Dawn Detroit has some explosive performance with a small BW. Some bloodlines just click and Nero x Serenity is one of them. Both sires were used on heifers, but they put the muscle and length in the calves.

From a past customer…

Twelve years ago we started looking for a way to improve the weaning weights on our calves and to capture the premium of a buckskin calf. What started as buying a bull from complete strangers developed into a solid friendship between our families. The bulls have added meat to our calves in length, width and depth. And though skeptical at first about retaining daughters, the females are excellent mothers with good feet and udders.

–Delton and Judith Martin and the girls

Calving ease plus on this guy with a good weaning weight.

He goes back to some old proven cow families and with the new feed efficient verified sire HWY KHROME 12K, we’re set up for consistent genetics. His dam, going back to PD Padra, is a top calving ease to performance cow and I used her son’s semen last year on heifers. With PD Serenity as the sire of his dam,

Javelin is a top prospect with his overall look and performance. His sire, HWY KHROME has done an

job here with his calving ease to performance. Khrome was the high selling bull in the Highway 21 2023 bull sale and a knock out for his feed to gain status. Very smooth and deep ribbed with extra volume and muscle.

Kromed comes from a top cow family with the Arrow background. This guy sure has the length that I like. Just tremendous calving ease to performance that makes us the extra dollars in the cattle business. Pleasant Dawn Rachet has some pretty awsome longevity built in on his dam’s side. His grandmother is 17 years old and gave me 15 calves. Cows like that kept me in the cattle business over the years. Problem free and

Use him to add extra length with extra muscle. Just love the extra meat in his hip.

PLEASANTDAWN LADY50F

Hercules is a big boy with extra length and hip. He’ll be sure to add pounds to your calf crop.

Hank is one deep-bodied bull with length! He is out of another 9-year old cow going back to Arrow. She’s got the maternal attributes and being crossed with Hank is just an added bonus.

Custom is a good-haired, American bloodline bull. He sure has a lower BW and calving ease and performance are a plus, but don’t recommend him for heifers.

Fertility is built in this guy’s cow family and he will leave you with generations of profitability!

Charger has an outstanding dam that was the high selling cow at the Super Star sale a few years back. I teamed up with Highway 21 on the cow and we put her in a flush program. This boy has the length and strong top that I like with a little head. You’ll want to keep the females from this guy!

From a past customer…

Our pasture consists of native grass with rough terrain, including sloughs, rock ridges and lots of bush. Pleasant Dawn bulls have worked extremely well in our pastures, having to cover a lot of acres in a day with our 300 head cow herd. The calves have consistency with calving ease which is a must for our farm. We will definitely continue to buy bulls from the Hatch family.

ease with Twister’s mother and performance with his sire, Transport.

Pleasant Dawn Guardian has a tremendous set of testicles at an early age. His smooth front and extra rib with muscle will add profit to your calves. His mother is a heavy milking, Magico daughter.

From a past customer…

There has been a lot of ups and downs in the cattle industry, but one thing that remains “solid” is the bulls the Hatch family has to offer. Quiet, good hair coats and calving ease are all attributes that keep us coming back to buy Pleasant Dawn Bulls. We have been buying bulls from Tully and Trent for about 7 years and have never had need to get any of their bulls feet trimmed, which in my opinion means they have a feed program that really works. Also peace of mind on sale day, that they back their bulls like very few in the industry. ~ Wes and Wayne Lamport, Melita, MB

THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSORS AND SPECIAL THANKS TO FUSION CREDIT UNION FOR SPONSORING THE COFFEE AND DOUGHNUTS

Oregon comes from my Arrow cow family. 214G is his great grandmother and she was 17 years old and gave me 15 calves naturally. This guy’s mom is 12 and following her mother’s steps. Fertility is not a trait measured but over time is one of the most profitable.

just love these Governor calves. As a cattle producer, you want calving ease to performance and Governor does it. Pharo has the extra length you don’t see too often but was bred in consistently from his dam’s side. Going back to the ultimate cow family, PD Arrow 214G, yes 15 calves in a row. Naturally, she never had a foot problem or any problem with that cow family. Many of her siblings are also 13 to 17 years old. That fertility is usually not measured but as a 100% cattle businessman, that’s consistent money in your pocket! Last year’s maternal brother sold to Domek Charolais, Montana.

This Transport calf has the performance to make you extra money when selling your calves. This guy is out of a old, proven, 10-year old cow - the great grandmother of Gizmo.

Pleasant Dawn Ronin comes from a calving ease cow family and I used his maternal brother on my heifers. Also his grandmother was 17 years old and calved every year with absolutely no problems. Ronin has some pretty good BW to WW stats and EPDs. He also did really well on the feed efficient tests gaining 3.87 lb/day with a feed to gain ratio of Adj.5.86 lb to 1 pound of gain. Also with a negative RFI.

From a past customer…

We run a 120 head commercial cow/calf herd. Since 1990 we have purchased our bulls exclusively from the Hatch family. Their extensive breeding program allows us to choose the bulls we need year after year. Disposition, calving ease, weight gain and customer satisfaction! All good reasons for our repeat purchases.

~ Hainsworth Farms, Deloraine, Manitoba

PLEASANT DAWN LAVA 173K

If you’re looking for a dark red bull, this guy has a mother with excellent feet and a nice udder.

From a past customer…

We have a mixed grain and cattle operation here on both our farms. We have purchased nine Pleasant Dawn bulls over the years and we keep coming back because of calving ease, growth, weight gain and overall performance. We keep our own replacement heifers to build a strong foundation in our herds. We truly appreciate the Hatch family’s hard work in producing these quality bulls. The after sale service and customer satisfaction are excellent. We are looking forward to seeing the next line of herd sires on sale day, God willing.

Thank you Hatch families.

~ Gerald & Sheila Lukin, Cory, Shirley, Zachery, Stephanie & Alyssa Lukin, Riding Mountain, Manitoba

Pleasant Dawn Nappa also comes from my Arrow cow family, the cow who was 17-years old and calved every year with absolutely no problems, giving me 15 calves. Nappa also goes back to Max on the top side who still use on heifers after 19 years. This guy will have good calving ease with excellent maternal traits! Extra length, good volume and hip with muscle. Retaining 1/4 semen interest.

From a past customer…

We are a mixed grain and cow/calf operation here at Vanbeselaere Farms. We have 5 Pleasant Dawn bulls working for us. We have run a closed beef herd for over 35 years. Keeping our own replacement heifers is an important part of building a strong foundation in the herd. The Tully Hatch family and their bulls are doing just that for us, as well as giving us the pounds to sell in the fall off our last February, March calving cows. The calving ease, growth, depth, width and the disposition of these herdsires is really showing. We have a little ways to go to the vision of what I want our herd to look like. The Pleasant Dawn genetics are sure making this attainable.

From a past customer…

Kathy and raise beef for the consumer to enjoy, not cattle for show. We have always rail graded our finished cattle and rely heavy on EPDs. The Hatch family’s genetics have been a sound part of our crossbreeding program and has shown positive in our feedlot results. We have been through a few ups and downs in the cattle cycle and found that a solid crossbreeding program that gives us live calves that convert grass to beef and have the gut capacity to perform well in the feedlot will save us money at the end of the day. Until the consumer says they don’t like beef, I expect the Hatch’s bulls to be part of our herd. If we could sum up our opinion of the Hatch family, it comes down to one word, Trust.

~ Barry & Kathy Routledge Farms, Lenore, Manitoba

Pleasant Dawn Crush is a top Mobile son. He will increase length, depth and performance in your calf crop while maintaining strong maternal traits. From a first-calf heifer, Crush has done excellent on the feed efficiency test. His average daily gain was 4.34 lb/day with an Adj. Feed to gain ratio of 5.46 lb to 1lb of gain. With a negative RFI, he absolutely Crushed it. Retaining 1/4 semen interest.

From a past customer…

There are few certainties in farming, but exceptional quality herdsires from the Hatch family is one. We have used Pleasant Dawn bulls for over 14 years with great success. Our weaning weights continue to increase and our birth weights still remain below 100 lb., largely due to Pleasant Dawn genetics. I love the even temperament and hair coat of their bulls and we have never trimmed a bull’s feet.

Pleasant Dawn Nero worked so well his first year calving, I had to use him again. never helped a heifer calve to him as of now. He’s out of a top Resource cow with lots of milk and nice teat size. When it comes to calving ease to weaning weight performance, he’s a total stud as you can see in his calves. I don’t normally sell herdsires in the sale and I was going to keep him as a backup, but he’s too good to be a backup bull, so better sell him before he’s too old.

From a past customer…

In the past 14 years we’ve purchased 20 Pleasant Dawn bulls. These bulls have consistently given us calf crops that have good hair coats and feed well. The bulls themselves have all had good feet and sired mothers that milk.

From a past customer…

We have purchased numerous Pleasant Dawn bulls and females over the years. The bulls consistently have good feet and are easy to work with.
