Publisher’s Note for the long days and short years
I
love our magazine’s tag line: For the long days and short years. That sentiment hit me hard this year with my oldest turning 9 and my youngest turning 5. I’ve been a mom for nine years! Where did all that time go? And just like those nine years, my first year as publisher at PDX Parent went by in the blink of an eye. Just like my oldest mastering power cords on her guitar and my youngest getting the letters of her first name all going in the right direction, we accomplished quite a bit in 2018 and had a blast doing it. We kicked our readers’ poll, PDX Parent Picks, up a notch (don’t forget to vote, starting January 2!) and we threw a big party to celebrate our Happy New Year, from the PDX Parent family to you and yours! poll winners and all of our readers at Oaks Amusement Park. (Watch out for more news about this year’s bash, coming on June 22.) We also created a directory for families experiencing disabilities (pdxparent.com/umbrella), revamped our website and started a podcast (find us on iTunes, SoundCloud and Stitcher!). All that and we’ve continued to publish great stories and everyone’s favorite online calendar for where to go and what to do with kids in PDX. We’re not going to slow down in the new year. As parents, we know firsthand just how much a resource like PDX Parent helps with both those long days and short years. (For the ultimate resource, turn to page 37 to find our annual Everything Guide, all new and updated for 2019.) So stay tuned. We’ve got some fresh, fun initiatives up our sleeve, including this month’s debut of a new back-page comic strip, Parentlandia, by local dad and New Yorker artist Tom Toro, on page 36. Stick with us for everything your family needs to know about the local people, places and spaces that make our corner of the world so special.

On our cover: For that just-right blend of New Year’s magic + birthday joy, we turned to local photographer Angela Scorcio of For the Love of Hazel Photography. She’s been doing dress-up glitter sessions for years now, and it was hard to think of a more festive and fun way to ring in 2019 on our cover, and look forward to a year’s worth of celebrations. Playlist: Chanteys for the Chilly Season Sometimes a kids’ music album is so good, you keep listening to it even after your children have exited the minivan. Winterland, the fourth album by The Okee Dokee Brothers, is that kind of album. If your kids like Portland’s own Red Yarn, they’ll be into The Okee Dokee Brothers’ similar style of folk/country/rock. Themes of togetherness, acceptance and keeping cozy echo through the songs. My 3-year-old adores the song Abominable Yeti, while my 6-year-old requests Howl. And I appreciate the nonbinary anthem, Snowpeople and the heartfelt tunes Keep Me Warm and New Year. Available on iTunes. — D.C.

Ask Dr. Doug:
Q
: I recently read online that the American Academy of Pediatrics now
A
strongly recommends against spanking. My parents are always telling me my son needs a good smack on his bottom when he misbehaves or talks back to me. I don’t feel like I want to do it, but I’m often at a loss of what to do instead. Any advice?
: Great question, and one that brings up a lot of strong feelings. Right off the
bat — trust your mama or papa instincts. Strong family ties are an important source of growth and happiness, but that often comes with a lot of unhelpful advice. You are your son’s parent, not your mom or dad. What I’m hearing you say is that spanking doesn’t feel right to you as a strategy, and it doesn’t feel right to me either. What are we teaching our kids? You hit your sister so now you get hit? I would also say it’s very difficult to spank your child with a calm and loving heart. When we’re angry, the physicality of it shades towards a place we don’t want to be as parents. Remember, discipline means “to teach,” not “to punish.” Here’s the second part of the recommendation that isn’t getting as much press but is just as important: In addition to not spanking, caregivers should not use harsh verbal discipline including shaming, humiliation, insulting or threatening harm. Of course our kids are going to make us angry, upset, and overwhelmed — they are kids. Can we resolve to not hit and not yell? It’s harder, I know! Here’s the dirty secret about spanking — although it may stop a behavior for a few minutes, long term it just doesn’t work. It teaches our kids that the way to solve a problem is to be aggressive. Worse, repeated use of harsh physical punishment makes kids more aggressive and depressed when they are older. There is some evidence it makes us depressed as parents, too! So what to do instead? We still need to support our kids in making healthy decisions. Bodies need to stay safe. Relationships need to stay respectful. But we can do that in a firm, loving way that helps our kids feel safe when they feel overwhelmed, by giving them strategies to problem solve for when they are calm. That in turn helps them build resilience across their lifetime. I would call this positive parenting, or attunement parenting. We are going to use different strategies and different scripts based on the age of our kids, but overall principles are the same. First, you have to take care of yourself before you can take care of small humans. Prioritize your sleep, healing and self-care. Second, kids do well if they can. Misbehavior is not them trying to make your life awful, it’s them showing you what skills they need to work on (usually loudly). Third, connect before you correct. Parenting is 80 percent connection and 20 percent discipline. Last, don’t be afraid to get help. Child behavioral health concerns impacting families is much more common than people realize; I help with it every day in clinic. If you need support or strategies, reach out to your pediatrician so we can join efforts. There are plenty of bumps in the road of being a parent. Let’s make it a bit less bumpy by using positive discipline strategies with our kids.
Pay Attention: After years of trying, Oregon Democrats have achieved a long-held dream: a supermajority in the state legislature, in both the state House and the Senate, and they hold the governorship. That means they have the votes to pass legislation of their choice, including potential tax increases, without needing any Republican support. That’s if all members of the caucus stick together, though, which is a big if — a Democrat from the Oregon Coast, say, might have very different priorities than one from inner Portland. Nevertheless,
when the legislature opens for their six-month session on January 22, expect to see proposals for some major pieces of legislation that could dramatically affect the lives of local families, including:
Activists have tried for years to pass a paid family leave plan in Oregon. Could the time finally have come?

An overhaul of Oregon’s tax system, but will that be coupled with conversation
about what to do about the state’s public employees retirement system, which requires massive expenditures by local school districts and governments?

To Test or N
An increasing number of parents in Oregon are choosing
A
pril LaCombe’s daughter, Leah, was a great student who excelled at math. The problem: She wasn’t so great at standardized testing. So when it came time for the Southeast Portlander to take a readiness test in sixth grade to determine whether she would proceed to accelerated math or continue at the standard pace, it was disastrous, LaCombe says. Her daughter scored very low, and the principal wouldn’t reconsider her daughter’s math placement. Leah is now 16 years old and a junior at Cleveland High School. She took double math classes last year so she can take calculus before graduation. LaCombe, meanwhile, has opted both of her daughters out of standardized testing since then. The twist: LaCombe is a Portland Public Schools teacher with nearly three decades of experience. Her own students are tested annually. Her observations in the classroom combined with her daughter’s experience has underscored what she already knew in her gut: “There’s a decade of research that proves these tests don’t give the student meaningful information on their academic progress,” she says.
As a result, Frederick, who is also a former teacher, pioneered the Student Assessment Bill of Rights, a statewide law that allows parents to opt their children out of statewide assessments more easily — and does not require parents to provide a reason for opting out. In 2015-2016, the first year the law was in effect, about 8.3 percent of parents opted their children out of English language arts/literacy, and 8.9 percent opted out of math. Two years later, more than 1 in 10 students statewide opted out of the Smarter Balanced test, which is the standardized test in English and math that Oregon helped develop for grades 3-12, currently in use in many other states. Locally preliminary data shows that more than 3,000 Portland Public Schools students — or 11.3 percent — opted out of English language arts/literacy, whereas 11.6 percent opted out of math.
“ There’s a decade of research that proves these tests don’t give the student meaningful information on their academic progress.”
Opt out and dropping test scores
It’s not just the percent of students taking the test that’s dropping: Overall test scores are also dipping. In 2017-2018, about 60 percent of students failed to meet math requirements and 45 percent failed to meet requirements in reading and writing across the state. Those results have The push — and pushback — for more testing stayed consistently low for each of the four years In 2001, President George W. Bush signed the No Oregon has used the Smarter Balanced test. Child Left Behind act into law. Not to Test? to opt their children out of state standardized testing. Deciding what’s right
“ Testing has a role in informing how we’re doing as a district and a school. To not have a student take the test affects that.”
Pat McCreary is another parent who comes to the testing issue with an educator’s perspective. As a high school social studies teacher in Beaverton, he’s had many parents ask his thoughts on the issue. “Standardized testing is one of those things that, at some point, people heard it wasn’t good. So when parents say they — Joe Suggs, Portland Public don’t like it, I like to push back a Schools System Planning and little and ask why,” he says. Performance Manager. When it came to his own kids, a junior and freshmen at Cleveland High School, he and his family weighed the pros and cons, taking each child’s needs into account. His criticisms of standardized tests are that they measure achievement rather than learning, they can take up a lot of time, and “you often have people who are writing the test who may not be representative of the students taking the test,” which can create cultural bias and skew results. On the other hand, he says, the tests are rooted in good intentions: “Philosophically, the idea is to ensure that all students are being given equitable access to a quality education,” he says. After discussing the issue, he and his wife asked his kids what they wanted. “They both opted to do it and they did fine,” he says. LaCombe says her daughters participate in shorter tests throughout the year, like Dibels (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills, a test administered to lower grades) to determine early literacy skills, because those tests quickly determine areas for improvement and allow teachers to help their students fill in skills gaps. But she’s a vocal opponent of the year-end standardized tests like Smarter Balanced. “When you think about an assessment, what is the purpose? If the purpose is to inform instruction in the classroom, that’s great. If you need it for anything more than that, then forget about it,” she says. Suggs, on the other hand, says the data from these tests helps schools and districts assess the quality of programming and can’t be eliminated. He says if you’re not sure what to do, ask. “Talk to the teacher, go to the principal or someone in central administration so you can discuss how the results are used, what the context is, and whether it’s the right option,” he says.

How to Opt Out The Student Assessment Bill of Rights, passed in 2015, made it easier for families to opt out of statewide tests. Parents and guardians can now opt out by signing a form with their child’s basic information — name, age and school — as well as the parent or guardian’s signature. The form does not ask for a reason for opting out of the test. Forms are available at the Oregon Department of Education site here: oregon.gov/ode/educator-resources/ assessment

Field Trip
Great Skate
Our writer’s dreams did not match up with her 4-year-old’s reality at the rink. But she’s got tips to help your family’s next ice-skating excursion go more smoothly. STORY AND PHOTOS BY ALISON WILKINSON
I
have a list of things I swore I’d never do after having kids.
And I have a list of things that I swore I’d never do after having kids that I’ve ended up doing on the regular (Example: “I’ll never bribe my child!” Um.) Funnily enough, those lists are the exact same length. But perhaps the biggest “expectation versus reality” fail to date happened when I took my youngest, Theo, age 4, ice skating. Expectation: Images of warmly mittened hands; an adorable pile of mom and child as we became tangled in each other on wobbly ankles around the rink; growing confidence as we soared across the ice. I wasn’t going to get too carried away, but odds were good we would end up with me holding him above my head, gazing into each other’s eyes, as I did an increasingly fast, wide-legged spin.
For more ideas for fun outings, visit: pdxparent.com/field-trip
Reality: A 44-minute (not a typo) limp once around the rink. (But check on the mittens and wobbly ankles.)

Ice skating is hard! And expectations need to be appropriately set. With the right rink, bribes (yes, I said it), and equipment, you may just end up having a Lifetime movie moment after all. Tip 1: Consider a beginner skating class. Many rinks, including the Mountain View Ice Arena in Vancouver, where we began our magical skating morning, offer beginner skating classes for children as young as 4. Growing up in Boston in the ’80s, ice skating was a part of my childhood — we all did it, along with wearing neon and singing along to New Kids on the Block. But skating is not like riding a bike. It’s a bit wobbly getting back out there. Both Theo and I would have benefitted from a little help at the outset. Tip 2: Start with the seal. Avoid my 44-minute death skate and start with a little help. Most rinks, Mountain View Ice Arena included, offer chairs or adorable blue seals that tots can sit on and then hold onto as they become more confident. Five dollars buys you 30 minutes of seal time, and it was worth every penny. We started out by me pushing Theo around the rink while he sat on the January 2019

seal and dragged his skates across the ice. Pro tip: Holding onto the seal while skating is like holding-onto-theedge-of-the-rink power times ten. Tip 3: Set clear goals. With seal in hand/under bottom, it was time to set some realistic expectations. While I was happy to see him enjoying the ice, I was aiming for him to make it around the rink on his own two blades. For round two, we alternated between Theo sitting and me pushing, and Theo pushing while he obstinately refused to let me sit. Whatever. I pushed him through the curves; Theo skatedwhile-holding-on during the straight stretches between them. I was hoping he would eventually make it all the way around without wanting to sit, but the allure of seal-back riding was too strong. Still, I took it as a win. Tip 4: End with hot chocolate. Always. At Mountain View, they had a reasonably priced concession stand, where you could fuel up on the hot beverage of your choice. And if you’re feeling splurgy (or need a bigger bribe), get a chocolate chip cookie, too.

For those who need greater inducement than liquid chocolate, Mountain View also offered small sheets of stickers for 50 cents, and several arcade games to choose from. Theo chose one of the car racing games. I immediately began lowering expectations for when he gets his driver’s permit. Alison Wilkinson is a former web editor at PDX Parent. This Mom Life
A Little Extra Help
H
appy New Year moms and dads! I hope your home is still full of holiday cheer and that your children go back to school soon. Like many of you, I don’t do the New Year’s resolutions thing. There’s a lot of smart scientist people who say that creating those expectations just sets us up for failure and I don’t need that kind of negativity in my life. However, whether I call it a resolution or not, there is one thing I want to be more mindful of in 2019 and beyond: Being more open and honest about mental health with my children. At ages 5 and 6, I believe they’re old enough to hear more about it, ask questions, and begin creating empathy in their hearts for everyone who lives with mental health struggles. One afternoon while dinner simmered on the stove, I found myself discussing all the things with them. We had scheduled my son for an ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) evaluation with his pediatrician. His dad has ADHD and from my own intense research, I had self-diagnosed him with ADHD. While we aren’t interested in medication, we would like something on paper so as to open up resources for him in the classroom. My curious kiddo asked me what his appointment was for and thus the floodgates were opened. I explained to him that his dad and I thought his brain might be different. The reason he may struggle to focus or sit still in class could be because he’s wired differently. His pediatrician will talk to him as well as me and Dad, we’ll fill out some forms and tests, and will find out if he has what’s called ADHD. I emphasized repeatedly that there was nothing wrong with him. He wasn’t weird, he wasn’t bad, his brain was just different, and we wanted him to be successful in school and life, which meant knowing as much about him and his body as possible. I surprised even myself when I segued into explaining to them what my medicine is for. They knew I took a pill every morning, but I had previously always explained it as a way for me to stay happy, which isn’t exactly true. With a deep breath, I dove in and explained to them in kid speak why I take Lexapro. I told them that my brain is also different, that it works in a special way. My brain needs help so I
Talking about mental health so the whole family can understand. STORY AND PHOTO BY TONI HAMMER can be the best mom I can be. My morning medicine helps me to see things clearly, helps me to be productive, helps me to be patient and kind and loving towards them. Much like Dad’s, and potentially my son’s brains, mine, too, was just different. Phew. After a short, pensive silence, my daughter spoke up and asked, “So what do I have?” “What do you mean, baby?” “Well Dad and maybe Levi have ADHD, you have anxiety and depression, what do I have?” I sat stunned for a moment, wholly unprepared for this particular question. “Well, err, you have just the right brain for a 6-year-old girl named Lily Hammer.” “So I don’t have anything? Everyone else has something,” she pouted. Another deep breath. I told her that, as far as we knew, her brain didn’t need any extra help, but that could change as she got older. I emphasized that what she does have is a heart full of kindness and compassion toward others and that oftentimes that is exactly what people with different brains need the most. I know I do. When my anxiety gets the best of me and I have to take a different medicine to calm down, what I need most is a hug and for someone to just love me. And that, I told my daughter, is what she has. She smiled, said okay, and went back to her drawing. My son had long ago bounced off to create some sort of mischief. And I gave myself a pat on the back for handling the unforeseen situation so well. I hope in the following year I continue to be transparent with my children about my struggles as well as my victories. I want them to learn from loving me how to love others who are different. I want them to grow up knowing no one is perfect and we all have our stuff to work through and live with. My hope is this will teach them both compassion for others and love for themselves. If you’re struggling with mental health, please seek help. Don’t be afraid to make an appointment with your doctor or call the Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255 if you need someone to talk to sooner. And if you live with mental health issues, share your story. You never know who needs to hear it.

Catch of the Day
Savor Pacific Northwest cuisine, kid-friendly service, and remarkable river views at Vancouver’s WildFin American Grill. BY DENISE CASTAÑON
E
verything about WildFin American Grill at the Vancouver waterfront says new. There’s the clean modern building. The construction in progress across the street. And then there is the huge restaurant itself, which opened in September 2018, with its airy dining room and vast wall of windows that offer stunning views of the new cable stay pier and Columbia River. You might think the hosts would shrink when a family rolls up with a 3-year-old and 6-year-old to disrupt all that neatness at noon on a Sunday. But they were incredibly welcoming to my family, seating us quickly and offering to grab a booster seat. The kid-friendliness kept right on going. Our server brought us two kids’ menus, two sets of crayons and two lidded water cups. The kids’ meal choices included a cheeseburger, Tillamook grilled cheese, PB and J, fettuccine with cream sauce or marinara, chicken strips, and fish and chips. Since we were there while brunch was on offer, my daughter Adela chose bacon and eggs. Her brother Cruz surprised me by asking for the fish and chips, and eating a good amount of it. (My husband and I tried the breaded fish and rated it close to the top of Portland’s best.) Each of the $7.95 kids’ meals included a starter (in this case blueberry scones with maple butter and jam — a big hit) and fries, veggies or fruit, a dessert, and a beverage. Adela’s fruit cup was so large she voluntarily shared it with Cruz, and it contained especially beautiful light purple speckled grapes. I’m going to call it: This was hands down the best kids fruit cup we’ve encountered on all of our eating out adventures. The menu for grownups focused more on PNW seafood and produce. My seafoodloving husband ordered the grilled Alaskan sockeye salmon with lemon vermouth butter, broccolini and roasted potatoes ($22.95). He cleaned his plate and remarked on the perfect portion size. I choose the lunch combo with half of a Wagyu beef French dip sandwich and a fall harvest salad of greens, Brussels sprouts, sweet potato and pumpkin seeds ($13.95). The beef in the
sandwich was achingly tender and the sweetness of the salad was nicely balanced by the Champagne vinaigrette. It was such a good salad I found myself thinking about how I could recreate it at home days later. Since everyone was in such a good mood, we decided to order dessert. The Chocolate Overload Cake ($8.50) lived up to its name — it’s like warm gooey chocolate pudding with a bit of cake and a scoop of vanilla. We didn’t feel too bad about eating dessert because after our meal we headed out for a walk on the new pier and waterfront. The stay cable pier is quite extraordinary, seemingly defying the laws of gravity as it juts out over the Columbia. And we saw a sign promising a new interactive water feature steps from the restaurant. My husband even managed to get a good photo of me with the kiddos on the pier (that never happens).

WildFin might be a little more fancy (and pricey) than my family’s typical dining mainstays, but we had a great experience from start to finish. I definitely see WildFin as the perfect choice for a large special occasion outing because they’d be able to easily accommodate a big group — and because that view is so impressive. 777 Waterfront Way, Suite 101, Vancouver. Check wildfinamericangrill.com for hours. Reservations and walk-in available. 360-718-7701.
Managing editor Denise Castañon loves to eat. And so do her kids. (Well sometimes.) And her husband is a great food photographer. They all live in Southeast Portland. 32

A fun (and healthy) take on “Mexican lasagna.” STORY AND PHOTO BY JUDITH RICH
Easy-Peasy Enchilada Bake M
exican food is a popular staple in our household. We love it for many reasons, including the various seasonal veggies you can incorporate. This new rendition of enchiladas more closely resembles a layered lasagna, giving it that comfort food quality we relish during cold winter months. Using small, street-style tortillas is key, making this dish all sorts of forgiving since you can overlap them to fit your pan. While I use shortcuts such as frozen veggies and store-bought enchilada sauce,
you can always use fresh cut vegetables and even a homemade salsa. I like to be liberal with cheese and mix up a variety of flavors, but of course, you’re free to adapt it to your needs or even make a vegan version. Pro tip: Make sure you cover the top of your enchilada bake with sauce and cheese to keep it moist. Without that, the top might get too crispy and hard to cut. This dish keeps really well and tastes even better the next day.
Veggie Enchilada Bake Serves 4
Directions
Store-bought enchilada sauce (I use Trader Joe’s brand)
2. Spread the enchilada sauce on the bottom of a 13-inch casserole dish.
1 package of street-style corn tortillas (I use Mission brand street tacos)
1. Preheat oven to 350o F.
1 15.5-ounce can of black beans
3. Layer with tortillas and ensure that you cover the entire pan. It’s okay if they overlap.
1 15.5-ounce can of pinto beans
4. Add a sprinkling of beans, corn, butternut squash and tofu.
1 cup of frozen (or fresh) corn
5. Add a generous layer of cheese and about a half a cup of enchilada sauce.
2 cups of frozen (or fresh) butternut squash, cut into ½-inch chunks 1 cup of firm tofu, cut into ½-inch chunks (optional) Small bunch of fresh cilantro, chopped 2 cups of shredded cheese (such as a Mexican blend of sharp Cheddar, Jack, Asadero and Queso Blanco)
6. Repeat the layers until the dish is full. 7. Top with the remainder of enchilada sauce and cheese, and a sprinkling of fresh cilantro. 8. Bake for 45 minutes, or until the top gets golden brown. 9. Rest for about 30 minutes, cut into squares and enjoy!

Sigh. That Christmas tree will have to come down sometime, so why not help support a good cause while you’re at it? Portland’s Sunnyside Environmental School holds an annual Christmas tree recycling extravaganza to benefit a schoolwide fund to subsidize field trip expenses for families who otherwise might not be able to participate. Bring your tree to the school on Saturday, January 5 and Sunday, January 6, 10 am-4 pm, and they’ll take care of the rest for just $5. You can also take part in a neighborhood kickball game, or warm up by their bonfire with drinks. Or, for just $5 more, you may be able to arrange for your tree to be picked up at your house. For more info, visit sespta.org.

Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed, who is the star of Oregon Children Theatre’s new play. It all starts when Wilbur finds a hat, just sitting there on the ground. So he tries it on, because — hey, why not? No matter which side of the political aisle your family is on, we can all agree that the first two years of the Trump administration have been pretty extra, no? We’re at the halfway point this month, and many Portland-area families will chose to mark the occasion by participating in the Women’s March on Sunday, January 20. The march, a day after one set for Washington, D.C., sets out from the Park Blocks at Portland State University at noon. Expect speakers, signs, crowds, chanting, and a chance to get involved in history. Free.
