PEACE OUTREACH PROGRAM The Peace Center was founded on the idea that the arts should be accessible to everyone, and over the past 25 years, this not-for-profit organization has brought hundreds of thousands of people from all walks of life and all corners of the country to see the best in live entertainment. But we couldn’t do that on our own. Each and every year, community members reach into their pockets and generously give to the Peace Center, ensuring that lights stay on, curtains stay up, and most importantly, that the Peace Center community initiatives continue to help those who need them. THE UGLY DUCKL ING & THE TORTOISE AND THE HARE Featured on the hit show America’s Got Talent, the amazing Lightwire Theater brings two classic children’s tales to the stage in a unique display of brilliant colors, lights, movements and sounds. Students will be captivated by the engineered light suits as they form their favorite characters – telling the timeless story of an epic race between a humble tortoise and a pompous hare, as well as the tale about a seemingly ugly duckling conquering all to become a hero. After shipwrecking on Illyria, she disguises herself as the man Cesario, and that's when things get a little crazy... Twelfth Night is a goofy, over-the-top, physical comedy-ridden Shakespearian story filled with love triangles, disguises, long lost siblings, silly pranks and colorful characters. Students will use the Scientific Method to levitate a teacher, witness mind-blowing scienceinfused illusions, and even learn how they can manipulate light and reflection to make homework disappear. B RE AC H OF P EACE: STORY OF THE FR EEDOM R IDERS In a sobering one-man show, Mike Wiley takes audiences back to Montgomery, Alabama in 1961 to follow the stories of Jean Thompson and her fellow Freedom Riders as they board a Trailways bus in an attempt to desegregate public transportation. This show is based on true accounts of surviving participants of the Freedom Riders as well as many other individuals involved in the early struggles for African-American equality. DA R H E : T H E STO RY O F E M M E TT TIL L Mike Wiley's riveting solo show brings the story of Emmett Till – a 14-year-old African-American boy who was murdered for whistling at a white woman – to the stage using actual conversations with a Look Magazine journalist, the boy's mother, others who witnessed the events, and confessions from the men accused of his murder. SUMMER T EACH ER INST IT UT E Educators statewide are invited to participate in one or two weeks of training designed to introduce strategies for using the arts as a tool to spark learning. STI is offered as a graduate level course in partnership with the College of Charleston. Within the two weeks of institute, educators are exposed to nationally acclaimed arts integration strategies championed by both The Kennedy Center and Lincoln Center. JUNE 12–16, 2017 ARTS INTEGRATION ACROSS THE CURRICULUM Designed for elementary and middle school educators, participants will engage in hands-on, arts-integrated activity that connects thematically to Disney's The Lion King, showing teachers how arts-integrated classroom activities can also connect to art viewing experiences. A ticket to see Disney's The Lion King at the Peace Center will be included in the registration. JUNE 19–23, 2017 AESTHETIC EDUCATION IMMERSION Designed for educators interested in helping their students expand creativity and think like artists, participants will explore processes that lead to artistic creation in Lincoln Center Education’s inquiry-based approach to arts education. Participants will have the opportunity to view live art, including Disney's The Lion King and create art themselves in order to show how engaging with works of art on increasingly deeper levels can complement classroom learning.
PEACE VOICES With the Peace Center's Poet-in-Residence Glenis Redmond at the helm, Peace Voices offers workshops, master classes and professional poetry readings for teens and adults. Using poetry as a vehicle, people are encouraged to discover their own voices, tell unique and personal stories, have important conversations, and develop written and verbal skills. POET-IN-RESIDENCE From the Peace Center to the State Theatre in New Brunswick, NJ, to the Library of Congress in Washington, DC to Muscat, Oman South of Saudi Arabia – it’s safe to say that Glenis Redmond’s poetry (and educational influence) has traveled almost as far as she has. Redmond is a Cave Canem Fellow, a North Carolina Literary Fellowship Recipient, and a Kennedy Center Teaching Artist. She has paved the way for poets in places like Flat Rock, NC, creating the first Writer-in-Residence program at the Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site. Redmond believes that poetry is a healer and if you need to find her, she’ll be scouring the world’s trenches so she can apply pressure to those in need. One eye-opening and honest poem at a time.

PEACE CHAMBER From the curious music-lover to the life-long chamber music enthusiast to musicians of all levels hungry to learn more, the Peace Chamber program provides music and music education on your terms. Join artistic director and renowned violist Miles Hoffman as he invites his friends and colleagues from around the country to the Peace Center to perform, teach, inspire, celebrate and ensure that chamber music is accessible to all. ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Violist Miles Hoffman is founder of The American Chamber Players and Artistic Director of Peace Chamber program. He made his New York recital debut in 1979 at the 92nd Street Y and has since appeared frequently around the country in recital, as chamber musician and as soloist, with many orchestras. His musical commentary, “Coming to Terms,” was heard weekly throughout the United States for 13 years – from 1989 to 2002 – on NPR’s Performance Today, and since 2002 he has been Music Commentator for National Public Radio’s flagship news program, Morning Edition. His radio modules, A Minute with Miles, are a daily feature of South Carolina Public Radio. Hoffman is the author of The NPR Classical Music Companion, now in its 10th printing from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. He is a graduate of Yale University and The Juilliard School, and in 2003 he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Centenary College of Louisiana in recognition of his achievements as a performer and educator.

SUM M E R WO R KS HO P Catering to talented amateurs, accomplished musicians and everyone in between, summer workshops for adults provide invaluable experience to chamber musicians looking to hone their craft. Participants will be divided into small groups based on experience level, where they will work closely with professional visiting artists in an authentic chamber setting. And at the end of the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to utilize what they have learned during a chamber showcase open to friends and family. JULY 20-23, 2017
