Shelley before Slimming World

When Shelley was faced with a 50 birthday cycling challenge, her immediate reaction was “No, I just can’t do it”. At 49, Shelley was feeling unhealthy, unfit and frumpy but losing two and a half stone with Slimming World started the wheels turning on a healthier lifestyle. Having slept on it Shelley Phythian, of Saltdean, decided to take up the challenge. However she was soon feeling frustrated at training hard for the charity cycle challenge in Sri Lanka but not losing weight. To help with her motivation and to turn her weight loss up a gear, Shelley searched online for her local Slimming World group. Feeling nervous and concerned that she would be judged, Shelley took her first steps into the group. “I shouldn’t have been worried”, she said, “the atmosphere was warm and welcoming and I was greeted by a friendly consultant. The best thing was that everyone was in the same boat, there was no judgement, only support and encouragement”.

control of my whole life thanks to Slimming World. I now want to share my newfound energy with people who may be feeling the way I did, less than a year ago. I feel fab at fifty and ready to face my new challenge of opening a group in Saltdean”. Shelley’s Slimming World group will open on Monday 7 April at 7.30pm in St Martin’s Church hall in Longridge Avenue, Saltdean. For more information contact Shelley on 07982 237299 or visit www.slimmingworld.com

Shelley was delighted at losing 5lb in her first week, having not been hungry at any time. “I couldn’t believe the amount and the variety of food I was able to eat and how easy the food plan was – I never once felt I was on a diet”. Each week Shelley and her friends at group shared ideas, recipes and tips which helped Shelley create indulgent, guilt-free family feasts. “It was amazing, the whole family could eat meals including curries, shepherd’s pie, lasagne and cooked breakfasts. Plus I could still enjoy a glass of wine without worrying about the scales”.

Shelley at the end of her 400km ride

For many people, the word exercise is associated with having to wear figure-revealing gym attire. With a five-day bike ride approaching, Shelley was worried about what she would wear and look like, “Cycling 80km daily in temperatures of up to 37 degrees Celsius, I knew I wouldn’t be able to cover up. Losing weight before I left gave me the confidence to get on the saddle”. Through her weight loss journey with food optimising and her cycling training, Shelley felt a growing confidence to steer her life in a new direction. Jubilantly crossing the finish line 400km later, she felt she didn’t want to stop. Her growing passion for cycling and living a healthier life has kept her on the right track towards her chosen weight target. “I feel so much more confident and in

Computer tips from Dolphin Computer Upgrades Computer Tips & Advice 55

Cyber Security The news is full of stories about cyber security - how Governments are snooping on people through their own computers; how hackers are worming their ways into your inbox and through your social media to steal your identity; do you take any notice? What do we need to do to protect ourselves? What is the biggest threat to our online safety, that is almost universal whether it be your PC, your Mac, smart phone, tablet, or email.....? What is the biggest risk to computer security? You are. The most common form of security breach is through human error, human apathy, or human ignorance. There is a (relatively) new phrase being bandied about that of Computer Security Apathy. With so many articles about hackers, cyber attacks and spam it appears that people are just switching off to the very real threats out there. Couple this with the "it won't happen to me" attitude and the reliance on free antivirus software and you are laying yourself open to security breaches.

Ignorance overlaps with apathy - "these hackers are just mucking about aren't they" is something that we hear quite often - but are they? Banks and financial institutions are no longer accepting ignorance as a mitigating circumstance if you have let hackers access your computers - we have had to provide several clients with letters stating that yes, our client does have a decent paid for security software package installed on their computer by us before the bank will take action. Whilst we continue to use social networks to tell the world that we are not in our homes or our places of work; whilst we don't bother having any or more than one password to access our computers and websites; whilst we don't bother having any form of paid for security or encrypted backups on our systems, we, as individuals and as businesses are the weakest link in computer security.

Summer music events in Rottingdean

World renowned orchestra to perform in Rottingdean The Hanover Band, world renowned for its performances of masterpieces from the Baroque and classical repertoire, is to appear in a series of summer concerts at St Margaret’s Church, Rottingdean. The concerts will bring together experienced members of the orchestra and some of Britain’s most talented young musicians to perform programmes exploring, in turn, the glories of early music, the immense impact of Handel and his contemporaries, the great blossoming of the classical genre led by W A Mozart and the arrival of the romantic era led by Beethoven, Schubert and Mendelssohn. Sponsorship by the Swiss charity Fondation La Joie des Arts means that the entire ticket sales revenue will be donated to St Margaret’s Church restoration appeal. “We are all tremendously excited to be able to bring such a prestigious orchestra to perform in St Margaret’s,” says Father Martin, the parish priest. “The Hanover Band has performed all over the world in venues like Carnegie Hall in New York, the Amsterdam Concertgebouw and the South Bank Centre, and we could not have wished for a better start for the programme of events we plan to produce in our newly-restored historic church which has been such an integral part of our community for nearly 1,000 years.”

The first concert, entitled Buds of May, will be on Friday June 9. Glories of the Handel Era will follow on Saturday July 5, Romantic Interludes on Saturday August 23 and the concluding concert, Mozart – Airs and Graces takes place on Saturday September 27. Tickets for all four concerts are now on sale, with a special subscription price saving 25% if you book for all four events. Bookings may be made by phone on 01243 813595, online at www.deanconcerts.com or in person from the church office. Further information from John Shaw Tel: 01273 301948

Daniel Shao, a dynamic young flautist who reached the finals of the BBC Young Musician of the Year contest, will be one of the soloists in the St Margaret’s Church concert series.

Financial Advice

Facing the Future. These days we are likely to live longer, healthier lives. The Office for National Statistics predicts that by the mid-century more than 7% of the UK population will be over 85 years old. Longevity is undoubtedly a blessing, but it comes at a cost. The reality is that we are not saving enough or spending enough time planning for our future. There is a degree of realism among Britain’s savers, even if their assessments are unsettling. Recent research by HSBC (‘The Future of Retirement’, 2013) revealed that two-thirds of people think that their preparations for a comfortable retirement are inadequate. The survey found that people expect their retirement to span 19 years but their savings would cover their anticipated lifestyle for just seven years. People are increasingly at risk of outliving their capital, but attitudes towards financial planning have not kept pace with this new demographic reality. Although individuals voiced concerns about whether they will be able to achieve longer-term goals, a third of respondents planned to increase their cash holdings over the next year. However, just over a fifth (22%) said that tax breaks on their investments might be the catalyst that they needed to move out of cash. Not only are we cautious and risk averse, but we are attending to our short-term needs at the expense of our long-term plans. BlackRock found that people save primarily for a rainy day or a holiday and spend more time planning for their annual vacation than their retirement. Indeed, buying a smart phone or the latest tablet computer consumed more time than thinking about their plans for retirement.

Careful planning and a commitment to action can still help us realise designs we have, however humble or grand. Surveys consistently demonstrate that there is a direct link between financial planning and saving more, however modest our income. People who use professional advice have two and half times the retirement savings of those who have not sought advice (source: HSBC, ‘The Future of Retirement’, 2013). BlackRock’s research also showed that people who have a financial adviser feel more in control of their financial futures, probably because the process compels them to take a more involved and comprehensive view of their finances. Building a secure financial future requires foresight, attention to detail and realism – as well as a dash of anticipation of enjoying one’s hard-earned wealth. The tax year-end is a time to seize your opportunities and start to make a difference now for the future. Health & nutrition advice

Bridgeford’s Best Bites:

Oxidative Stress Life exposes us to many types of stress; oxidative stress is one we cannot see or feel. A certain amount is produced by our normal metabolic processes and can be important for our immune function, yet excessive oxidative stress can be a risk factor for many chronic conditions. Imagine that we have an internal exhaust system and our cells need to process the exhaust fumes, yet can only process a limited amount, so any excess creates problems including molecular, cellular and tissue damage. Oxidative Stress is essentially an imbalance between the production of free radicals and the body's ability to counteract or detoxify their harmful effects by neutralising with antioxidants. Internal Free Radicals are produced in normal human activity such as energy production, detoxification of pollutants and immune defence systems. They are unstable molecules that can take an electron from a neighbouring molecule, causing damage in the process. Unchecked free radical production accelerates the cause of human disease and aging. Reactive Oxygen Species: A free radical is a molecule that contains oxygen and has one or more unpaired electrons, making it highly reactive with other molecules. Oxygen by-products are relatively un-reactive but some can metabolise within the body giving rise to these highly reactive oxidants. Some reactive oxygen species are useful in killing invading pathogens or microbes. Free radicals can also chemically interact with DNA, protein and lipids, stealing their electrons in order to become stabilised. This destabilises the DNA, protein and lipids molecules which then find and steal an electron from another molecule, triggering a chain of free radical reactions causing cell damage and homeostatic disruption, including suppressing the immune system. External Free Radical Sources • Alcohol • Cigarette smoke (1 puff - 10,000 free radicals) • Medication • Ozone (O1 - 1 atom is always a free radical) • Polluted water; poor nutrition • Radiation • Stress; Smog; smoked, grilled and preserved food • UV rays Diseases caused by oxidative stress Evidence is accumulating that oxidative stress is involved in many pathological processes, including:

• • • • • •

Asthma Cancers and gene mutations; Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Diabetes mellitus Environmental sensitivity Fragile X Syndrome Heart and blood vessel disorders: atherosclerosis, heart attack, heart failure • Inflammatory diseases: rheumatoid arthritis, arthritis; Inflammatory bowel disease • Macular degeneration • Neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s Antioxidants Free radicals are counter-balanced by the anti-oxidants present in foods and supplements. Proanthocyanidins found in blueberries and bioflavonoids found in citrus fruits, as well as the antioxidant enzymes, superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase protect against free radical damage. Oxidative Stress Testing A combination of a blood and a urine sample are taken to assess balance between oxidative damage and antioxidant reserve and evaluate the damage that free radical production has already caused. Prevention “You might just as well stand unprotected in front of an X-ray machine as to not get enough fruits and vegetables.” Journal of the Medical Association: Prof. Bruce Ames, Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of California, Berkeley, and a senior scientist at Children's Hospital Oakland Research Institute (CHORI). Local History - Part 25

Rottingdean High Street Mike Laslett

An enjoyable and informative afternoon stroll may be taken along Rottingdean High Street, concluded by a drink at one of the excellent pubs or tearooms en route. At the sea end, around the A259 crossroads, the buildings have generally changed beyond recognition, though the architecturally minded among you may wish to note St Margaret’s Flats by Richard Jones, who designed Saltdean Lido and The Ocean Hotel. However, to the north of the crossroads, you can soak up the historic atmosphere as you traverse the narrow red bricked pavements bounded by high cobbled walls, observing the buildings which are both attractive and of historic interest. Start at The Queen Victoria Public House on the eastern side of the High Street.

The school, recently closed, was originally an early 19 Century detached house and has hosted various schools since 1832. It is fronted by a fine cobbled wall. You may wish to take a break for refreshment at this stage. Our journey along the High Street will continue next month.

The first notable building of antiquity is The Olde Cottage Tea rooms, built about 1580, note how low the roof is at the rear. Its other functions over the years have included being a greengrocer’s.

The adjacent “Tallboys” at No 66, with its tall, narrow, form and cobbled frontage has hardly changed since it was built in 1780 as a Customs House to reduce smuggling. Looking across to the old houses opposite note number 33 with its cobble plinth and knapped flint walls above. The central chimney stack, dentil cornice and surviving horizontal sliding sash windows are characterful 18 century features but behind this façade there is almost certainly a much earlier building which was substantially altered in the 18th century. On the front of the house you can see a Sun Insurance Fire emblem.

The Sun Fire Office first opened in 1709. Following The Great Fire of London in 1666, private insurance companies insured buildings against fire and employed their own firefighters to douse the blaze. Neighbourhood Watch

Securing your personal data It's that time of year again when our accountants start chasing us for the end of year accounts, and paid invoices if you are self employed. Given that the Inland Revenue expects us to keep at least 4 years previous accounts and if you are disposing of the ''5th '' year these should be SHREDDED in order to stop anyone extracting personal data. With documents ALL names, addresses and account numbers should preferably be SHREDDED, but if not at least made illegible before putting in your bin!! Shredding machines or special scissors can be purchased very cheaply nowadays for this purpose. The other thing to remember is if you are discarding a credit or cash card it needs to be cut into 1/4 inch strips including the ''chip''. Recent NHW open meeting/AGM Our recent Meeting for members and co-ordinators proved a lively and interesting meeting. Our Guest speaker was the Police & Crime commissioner Katy Bourne who gave us an enthusiastic insight into her role as PCC. Our members had a lot of questions for the PCC and also for the Police representatives from Lewes District and Brighton & Hove. We had positive feedback from many members and know that with the support of the Police, Saltdean Rottingdean &

Ovingdean Neighbourhood Watch will continue to go from strength to strength. We have several new ventures that we will be enthusiastically taking on during 2014.

News from Saltdean Dental Saltdean Dental Health are delighted to introduce our First Newsletter, and also to Announce our Dates and Itinerary for our First Series of Open Days and Evenings - Read On! Now that we are well into 2014 we hope that the New Year is going well for you all and that you managed to keep your New Year resolutions - for a least a few weeks! Time does fly, and it is already just over a year since Dr Alex Fenech took over the Practice. He would like to take this opportunity to thank all our Patients for their wonderful welcome and positive feedback over the last year. Alex is completely settled now in Brighton and is looking forward to continuing to care for all his patients, new and old. We are very fortunate to have such an experienced and loyal team, and we are delighted to announce that we have now extended our team to include Dr. Rodolfo Adana Diaz (Rodi) whose speciality lies in Implantology.
