Welcome

Welcome to the April Edition… We have had a request to include details for Telscombe Town Council as East Saltdean is part of their area, so from this month we will aim to include as much as space allows, please see page 40 for this. Keep the articles coming in, we don’t always have space for everything but we will try our best to help out and it is a good way to publicise local concerns such as the feature on Longhill Close woodland on page 49 of this issue. Thank you to the ever watchful readers of the Deans who spotted that the website hadn’t been updated for the March magazine - it had been uploaded but I had neglected to select the ‘publish’ step. The latest magazine and an archive of at least the previous six editions can be found on the website at: www.deansmagazine.co.uk Keith - Editor

Barry Hinchcliff I have always liked the mixture of the man made environment and nature. It is this contrast that makes me stand and stare. I walk through my chosen subject, moving, sometimes walking backwards, to view it diminishing and then forwards again. I compose with the various elements in my field of vision making a picture, creating a balance or sometimes a disequilibrium to make a problem and then try to solve it, perhaps adding a cypress tree. I like the whole range of dark tones contrasted by slabs of light, which I lay on like buttering a slice of bread. I do not want prettiness. I want a mentally satisfying abstract pattern formed by hard man made images and round natural shapes full of volume, existing within a defined space. I am trying to recreate the essential character of the view not by focus on details but rather capturing the light and shade by using the qualities of the paint itself and the way I apply the paint to the canvas. I usually do a preliminary watercolour on location, accurate in tone, dark and light. I like to experiment with the shadow colours by deciding on the base colour, purple, red, blue. I do not use black. Then I draw the enlarged image onto the canvas making the tone pattern first with thin oil paint. I then do a monochrome painting using indigo before gradually thickening the paint to complete the painting. I do a lot of my painting in France
I am having an exhibition of my paintings in the Grange Gallery Rottingdean during the Brighton Arts Festival May, 6 -26 Other artists exhibiting with me will be: Christine Harfleet fused glass artist . David Bradford wood sculptor. Denise Hopper jewellery and textiles . Maggie Stephens creative beadwork . Lisa Brown textiles Teresa Sundt colourful tapestries

Computer tips from Dolphin Computer Upgrades Computer Tips & Advice 67
5 Things to think about Whether it’s time to say a final farewell to your old computer or you are buying your very first new one, choosing the right computer can be a mind-boggling experience. So how do you decide on the best new computer for you? What will you use it for? If you only want a computer to check the news and send a couple of emails, then things like memory and processing power won’t be too important. If you are looking at downloading music, streaming movies or playing games then you need a top of the range machine that will cope with all you throw at it. Where will you use it? When PC’s first started to become part of family life there would be one, large and noisy machine sat in a corner of the room – now we use computers everywhere we go. If you fancy sending emails from garden this summer, you need something that will connect to wireless where ever you are in your house – or garden. Will your needs change in the near future? The world of technology is rapidly changing and updating – if your children or grandchildren may need to use your new
computer, will the machine you thought you needed just for your basic use be enough? You don’t want to go for an entry level computer and then discover a few months down the line that it is not capable of all the things you need from it. Will it be compatible with your current software/hardware? New computers don’t always support old software – you need to take this into consideration as if you also have to buy new versions of all of your programs it could be costly. The same goes with your hardware – can your new computer work with your printer for example. Is it really such a great deal? “Buy cheap, buy twice” – there is usually a good reason why certain makes and models of computer are such a “good” deal – if it looks too good to be true, it most probably is. Spending out just a little bit more for a higher performing machine could save you money in the long term.

Health & nutrition advice
Bridgeford’s Best Bites:
Avocado The avocado or alligator pear (Persea americana), a fruit with a large berry containing a single seed is believed to have originated in Mexico around 10,000 BC. First written about in Europe around 1500 with the first English written record in a 1696 index of Jamaican plants. Introduced to Indonesia in 1750, Brazil in 1809, South Africa and Australia in the late 1800s, and the Levant in 1908. Nutrition: Rich in polyphenolic compounds, flavonoids, and alkaloids (antioxidants). Very high in potassium, rich in phosphorus and magnesium, contains calcium, sodium and traces of iron and zinc. Vitamins: highest in C, followed by E, B3, B6, B2, B1, folate with traces of K, A. Particularly rich in carotenoids (zeaxanthin, alphacarotene, beta-carotene) and lutein. High in monounsaturated fatty acids, which help the carotenoids to be absorbed into the bloodstream, some unsaturated fatty acids, no cholesterol. Science: Anti-Cancer: due to high content and combination of bioactive phytochemicals with potential chemo-preventive activity, including carotenoids; possible cancer prevention and inhibition of cancer cell growth. Anti-Inflammatory: avocado oil decreased C-Reactive-Protein (CRP) levels, indicating partial reversal of inflammatory processes. Anti-Oxidant: due to flavonoids, carotenoids and avocado-soybean unsaponifiable (ASU). Neuroprotective in brain injured rats. Cardiovascular: due to anti-inflammatory and anti-cholesterol properties, the pulp has reported cardiovascular health benefits. Avocado seeds may be useful in the treatment of hypertension; avocados have beneficial effects on cardio-metabolic risk factors extending beyond their heart-healthy fatty acid profile. Cholesterol: lowering effects due to antioxidant activity of phenolic compounds and dietary fibre in Avocado Seed Flour (ASF). High lipid, high monounsaturated fatty acids (MFA) avocado enriched diet can improve lipid profile in healthy and especially in mild hypercholesterolemic patients, even if combined hyperlipidemia is present. Avocado oil reduces total glycerides (TG), low and very low-density lipoproteins (VLDL, and LDL) levels, in the LDL case significantly so, without affecting HDL levels. Collagen: anti-inflammatory and collagenolytic action of ASU has place in treating inflammatory connective tissue gynaecological conditions, with favourable results particularly in post-inflammatory and post-infective conditions and pelvic scarring. Diabetes: avocado consumption is associated with improved overall diet quality, nutrient intake, and reduced risk of metabolic syndrome, evidenced by decreased CRP. Partial replacement of complex digestible carbohydrates with monounsaturated fatty acids (avocado) in the diet of patients with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus improves the lipid profile favourably, maintains an adequate glycemic control, and offers a good management alternative. Osteoarthritis: beneficial effects due to anti-inflammatory properties and ASU; cartilage protective, 3 year treatment suggested structural benefits on arthritic hip, further studies needed. Skin: ASU effective in rat wound healing. Topical use of avocado oil can promote increased collagen synthesis and decreased numbers of inflammatory cells during wound-healing process and may be considered a new option for treating skin wounds. Studies of a recently developed vitamin B12 cream containing avocado oil has considerable potential as a well-tolerated, long-term topical therapy of psoriasis. Weight: studies suggest an appetite depressant in avocado and that avocado pulp interferes with hepatic fat metabolism. Eating 200 g of avocado per day within an energy-restricted diet does not compromise weight loss when substituted for 30 g of mixed dietary fat.
Adding Avocado to your Diet: ● Cut in half and twist to expose and remove pip, eat raw! ● Slice crossways, scoop out with a large spoon, turn out on plate, press down to spread slices; serve with smoked salmon ● Mash with a fork and spread on rye toast; add to salads and smoothies ● Avocado Ritz: stuff with prawns and mayonnaise or salsa sauce, garnish with salad leaves ● Guacamole: mash and add garlic, chopped onions, chilli, lemon juice, cayenne pepper and pepper; tomatoes We are happy to advise you on your health matters. Local History - Part 35
Local Policing Mike Laslett
I cannot portray nearly two hundred years of Brighton policing in the few lines here. Therefore let me encourage you to visit the Old Police Cells Museum, where I or one of my colleagues (most of whom are retired police officers) will give you a fascinating tour. The Old Police Cells Museum is housed in the basement of Brighton Town Hall and offers visitors a unique insight into the history of policing in Sussex and is both educational and entertaining. The Town Hall was built on the site of Saint Bartholomew’s. This Priory was established in the first half of the 13 Century as an offshoot of the great Cluniac Priory at Lewes. If you ask nicely the guide may show you the well that the monks used to water their vegetables. It is about thirty feet deep and is fed by a tributary of the Wellsbourne stream which runs from Patcham to the beach. Sadly, the Priory and most of the dwellings in The Lanes were burnt down during the French invasion of 1514.
Visit the website: www.oldpolicecellsmuseum.org.uk to find out more.
The museum was Brighton’s main police station from 1830 to 1967. You may learn about the murder of Chief Constable Henry Solomon in 1844 by a prisoner, the history of women’s policing and view the evidence which convicted The Grand Hotel Bomber. You may see some of the old cells with their graffiti from the Mods and Rockers era, the white helmets worn by Brighton Police in summer and much, much, more. Accompanied children are most welcome and will have the opportunity to dress up in police uniforms or be photographed behind bars! Due to the generosity of Alderman Caffyn, the museum also houses one of the largest collections of truncheons and tipstaves in the country. From April until October the museum is open on Tuesdays to Saturdays and the 10:30 am tour lasts about an hour. As space is limited it is necessary to book your place on the tour by telephoning the Town Hall reception 01273 291052. The museum is also licensed for weddings and regularly booked for overnight sessions by ghost hunters.

Neighbourhood Watch
Message from East Saltdean PCSO My name is PCSO Rosie Bearfield-Smith, and along with the other PCSOs in Newhaven, I will be replacing PCSO Ivan Tickner to cover Peacehaven, Telscombe Cliffs and East Saltdean. I joined Newhaven Policing Team in October 2013 and I’m currently the local PCSO for the area of Newhaven Valley and Piddinghoe Village which is a post I will continue to hold. I will be the point of contact for Neighbourhood Watch in East Saltdean. Please contact me on 07810 814723 or email rosie.bearfield-smith@sussex.pnn.police Before joining Sussex Police I completed a degree in Social Policy and Criminology at London School of Economics and Political Science. I love my job and enjoy my role, being a part of the local community, working within this coastal team and welcome the variety of the responsibility. My fellow PCSOs at Newhaven are; Chris Marchant, Jules Nicholson and Stacey Jennion.
East Saltdean remains an area where crime figures are consistently low. When these figures have risen, due to a rise in vehicle crime for example, Peacehaven, Newhaven Policing Teams have put operations into place to tackle these issues. We would like to encourage every resident to remain aware of their surroundings and ensure their property is secure and all windows and doors are locked if a property or vehicle is being left unattended. Crime figures for W.Saltdean, Rottingdean and Ovingdean also continue to be low but as NHW have pointed out in the past we must not become complacent! It is our responsibility to make sure our house and property are kept secure and therefore we must ensure that the whole family participate. By becoming a NHW member you will receive regular information on the best ways of achieving this and you will also receive regular updates on crime figures in the area. For more information please contact Secretary Linda Hood 01273 306441 or email nhw.sro-sec@hotmail.co.uk

Longhill Close Council urged to protect local woodland Members of Longhill Close Woodland Group are urging Brighton and Hove Council to designate the area between Longhill Close Ovingdean and Elvin Crescent, Rottingdean as inappropriate for development in the City Plan. The land in question has stood undisturbed for decades and forms a natural gap between Rottingdean and Ovingdean, defining the historic boundary between the two villages. Its dense green woodland has provided a natural habitat for many birds and wildlife such as jays, woodpeckers, bats, badgers, foxes and squirrels. The trees and undergrowth have also played a part in the prevention of landslip and flooding, and any further development in this area would mean increased pressure on sewage, roads, schools, doctors, dentists and air quality. This campaign is as a response to the site being significantly cleared of trees and shrubs using chainsaws and diggers. When contacted, the landowners would not clarify what they were doing, or the timescale involved. However , Brighton and Hove City Council planning department stated, “development has not been approved on the site, no application has been submitted and no pre-application discussion has been held with the owners” . Regardless, the landowners have lit bonfires to destroy the felled trunks, engulfing neighbouring homes in smoke and ash. In response to complaints about the bonfires the City Council has issued a ‘notice to abate a statutory nuisance’ , which has given locals a temporary reprieve from the bonfires. However , despite it being the nesting season the surrounding residents continue to be woken up by the deafening noise of chainsaws. A concerned resident said ‘ At present the City Plan highlights this land for potential however it is areas like these which define Ovingdean and will stop the Village becoming a huge housing estate. We are petitioning the Council to protect this land by changing its status to ‘inappropriate for housing on the City Plan’ T o sign the petition which is being presented to the Mayor of Brighton and Hove on 26 March, please go to http://tinyurl.com/LonghillWoodland A paper petition is available at Ovingdean Village Hall. There has been an overwhelming local response to this campaign already with over 500 signatures, but more is needed. Simon Kirby Conservative MP for the area fully supports this campaign and is committed to protecting precious green spaces in the area. Simon said: ‘I have consistently opposed inappropriate development in the area. The City Council should be looking at town centre sites, brownfield sites and large sites like Shoreham Harbour long before it even considers sensitive sites like this. We need new development in Brighton but it should be appropriate development at appropriate locations. The land is inappropriate for a range of issues, including the important role it plays in maintaining the distinctive village feel of Ovingdean. ” Davy Jones, GP PPC said today: "As Caroline Lucas MP warned in parliament when the NPPF was being debated, it has given a green light to developers all over the country to press their claims to build on greenfield sites. I fully support the campaigners opposing the developments on the Urban Fringe sites in Ovingdean"

Saltdean Primary School Saltdean Primary has a special place at the heart of the local community. Founded just over 50 years ago, it has grown from an infants school, to being separate infant and middle schools, to then evolving together under one organisation sharing two buildings across the site. The school is rightly proud of its community ties - with, in many cases, a second and even third, generation of children now passing through.
The school was recently congratulated by the Minister of State for Education, who commended the school for their outstanding Key Stage 2 results, and for being in the top 100 schools in the country in terms of the progress pupils make at this level. The minister described the school as 'exceptionally effective in educating its pupils'. In addition OFSTED visited the school in December and rated it as Good. Within their report, the inspectors commented on the positive attitude, enthusiasm for learning and behaviour displayed by the pupils. They also highlighted the leadership as a key strength saying that ‘School leaders have ensured that the school’s overall effectiveness has remained good since the last inspection. Senior leaders and the governors are united in their clear vision for moving the school forward and, consequently, the school is well placed to improve still further.’
community view to the school Governance. We would like to hear from anybody who has a passion for education and child achievement, but would particularly encourage contact from anyone with a background in data analysis, building, planning or health and safety, as these are roles that will be key to providing effective leadership in the months and years ahead. If you are interested, please contact the school via enquiries@saltdean.brighton-hove.sch.uk and they will be happy to provide more information and answer any questions you may have. Support and training for Governors will be provided by the local authority and the commitment is likely to involve 10 to 15 hours per Term.
As Saltdean and its surrounding areas have grown, so has the school. For the last two years, they have accepted additional pupils as bulge classes, moving from two-form to three-form entry. This is now being made a permanent expansion and the school is embarking on a significant building programme, which will not only deliver innovative learning spaces but also expand the school hall, providing an opportunity for new and improved facilities that will be available for community use. The project will also link the two current buildings together, bringing an end to wet and windy walks across the playground at some times of the year. The school’s recent success and the exciting building development mean that there has never been a better time to provide support to the school and there is a real need for community involvement at Governor level. There are current vacancies for co-opted Governors, whose role is to provide a If you have a local article to publish email editorial@deansmagazine.co.uk

Myofascial Release Penny Koster, Holistic Pain Therapist Myofascial Release - the gentle release of connective tissue, I have a beautiful log cabin in my garden where I work from, it is an incredibly relaxing and gentle space. I have been a therapist for many years, I have a lot of different qualifications and training, but the therapy I am most passionate about and know first‐hand works completely is myofascial release, Myo-fascial is the connective tissue which joins everything together, covers everything, fills all the gaps holds you together, it has the memory of your life, it relays messages to your brain faster than the nervous System, every single thing that happens to you in your life whether it be good or bad is stored in your subconscious and your fascial system, The fascia is like a giant web made up of collagen, elastin and ground substance it covers you from top to toe with no orifices unlike your skin, it moves constantly within your body, it penetrates, covers, protects every organ, muscle, ligament, tendon, bones everything- we are fascia, scar tissue is damaged fascia that has gone hard and dehydrated, that is why generally women get more lower back problems then men because they have hysterectomies, C-sections and end up with fascia that is damaged, dehydrated and hard (scar tissue) so no longer moves and consequently pulls on areas like the lower back, fascia can become hardened dehydrated and stop moving and therefore cause problems, discomfort, pain, disease for many many different reasons I generally call it life. Another example because we are one complete unit everything is connected you could have a pain in your shoulder and the pain could possibly
originate in your lower back, or maybe your neck or both. Myofascial release is being called the missing link and I passionately believe this to be true, I believe in the not too distant future everyone will be having these treatments, The cause of discomfort, pain is the collagen layer of the fascia, this is the layer that has to be released from its stuck, dehydrated, no longer moving position! An Analogy if you step on a hosepipe the flow is impaired. I am highly trained in myofascial release, I am trained to Body read to know where the problem is and then to un-stick it.. The whole world needs to know about this treatment! I feel very passionately that everyone should understand how it works, and as much as possible be able to do it to themselves and each other. There is no such thing as 'I have that pain because I'm getting old' No-one needs to have pain! Exceptions being if you break a leg or have an accident et cetera, I give these treatments which are extremely powerful but at the Same time very gentle, I also educate people so that they can self-care in the future and when they have a pain they understand why it's happening, and what they can do about it, ABSOLUTELY NO ONE HAS TO BE IN PAIN. Everyone is different sometimes it takes longer than others, IT IS WORTH THE WAIT! If you're interested in having a treatment and want to learn more about myofascial release and myself please go to: www.trigger-points.me.uk or phone me on 07951 117826

Rottingdean & Saltdean Lions
Lion’s update Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions Club Major Service Activities in 2014 Building on from our last article that listed our major contributions to service activities, we are pleased to report that late last year we entertained 111 senior citizens at our 2014 Christmas lunches; also last year we took 52 senior citizens on a mystery coach trip with a cream tea. Other major service activities during last year included the Message in a Bottle scheme which also supports drop off points for used spectacles. Around 470 pairs of spectacles were collected throughout 2014 for refurbishment for use in the developing world. All these service activities will be supported in 2015 along with many more – long may it continue. It’s a Knockout event at Longhill School On 1st March we, together with other Lions Clubs in the immediate area, entertained some guests with learning difficulties at an annual It's a Knockout event at Longhill School. Once again this year it was a very successful day with seven teams from local care centres, around 45 participants plus about thirty Lions and helpers in support. A good time was had by all and we were delighted to be joined by the Mayor and Mayoress who presented the prizes and praised the participants for their energy and enthusiasm. The Deans Charity Challenge A new fundraising initiative has been launched in 2015 entitled the Deans Charity Challenge. The Deans Charity Challenge is a sponsored run or walk over either a 9 mile or 5.5 mile course, the majority of which will be on footpaths and bridleways over the Downs, which will take place on Sunday 17th May 2015, starting and finishing at Saltdean Oval. We ask you to seek your own sponsorship for this event. When the money is collected up to 50% will be returned to you for your chosen charity and the other 50% will be retained by the Lions. We also request that you collect sufficient sponsorship to ensure that you donate a minimum of £15 each to the Lions. Children under 14 (and dogs on leads) are welcome if accompanied by an adult, and we do not ask them for a minimum sponsorship, although if they can receive any it would be most welcome. The main beneficiary of the Lions’ share of funds raised will be Autism Sussex, who will have a stall in the Oval. King and Chasemore estate agents are pleased to sponsor this event. Free water will be provided at checkpoints on both routes. There will also be a bar and barbecue in the park for entrants and supporters. It should be a very special event. To request an entry pack and associated sponsorship forms please ring 07917 155048 or email: r&slions@sortium.com
Our Lions Fayre in Rottingdean will be held on the Village Green on 13 June and our Lions Saltdean Gala in Saltdean Oval will be held on 18 July. For both of these events, any local group or small trader that would like to have a stall is most welcome to contact us – please see details below. If you would like more information on any of the above service or fundraising activities, or to book a stall at our Fayre or Gala please contact Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions on 08458 339617 or email at info@rottingdeanandsaltdeanlions.org.uk. As we enter a busy season for the Lions, I would like to thank readers of Deans Magazine for their continued and generous support.
