Welcome

Welcome to the August Edition It’s not been a bad summer so far, we’ve had some beautiful sunshine and often it has coincided with the Summer events - The Lions Gala at Saltdean Oval was very lucky with the weather last month - let us hope this trend continues through August. A couple of reminders for our readers - every month we include a full index of advertisers at the back of the magazine, this is probably the quickest way to find the service you are looking for. Secondly, don’t forget the full magazine appears on our website at www.deansmagazine.co.uk very handy for tracking down a past article as there is always several months of back copies on there. We welcome articles from individuals and local groups who want to share what they do with others and make no charge for this, so please keep these coming in. All the best.

Barbara Collins On leaving school I attended Art College and enjoyed four years of exploring creativity. Although I had always wanted to be a jeweller, it became clear during my degree (BA Hons 3D Design, wood, metal, ceramics, plastics) at Brighton University that ceramics would be my main subject. Whatever the material I worked in I always focused on the surface texture and pattern I could create and this has been an ongoing theme in my work ever since. I am inspired by forms found in nature and by the art and craft of ancient cultures , particularly Egypt. I have recently been working with the lotus flower motif to create bowls , candle holders and ceramic flowers for the garden. All my work is intended to create a calm and peaceful atmosphere. Over the years I have worked in various group studios in Brighton and have made and sold my work around the UK and abroad. For the past twenty years I have taught pottery and found that teaching from my studio is ideal for me. Clay has so many possibilities and is a very relaxing and grounding material to work with. Everyone can find an area that excites and inspires them and self-expression is a fundamental need that we all have and which does not always get met in our busy lives. Last year I moved my studio to my home in Saltdean where I have lived for the past seven years. This has been an exciting development for me. I really enjoy teaching and working with small groups of adults and children and offer regular classes and themed workshops. Circle Studio is a calm and relaxing space with a lovely view of the downs My own work is available to purchase here and is displayed in the studio and garden. You can find out more about my work on my websites www.barbaracollins.co.uk and www.circlestudio.co.uk

Computer tips from Dolphin Computer Upgrades Computer Tips & Advice 71

Hard Drive Failure Dolphin Computer Upgrades with some very important advice on backing up your data… One of our computers failed recently. It began to act a little strange – so we took a look and sure enough, the hard drive had failed. The computer in question was less than 2 years old – the data stored on the computer irreplaceable. There were all the contact details of our clients, there were documents and images, information that if lost would not only cause a major inconvenience to ourselves, but also a lot of damage to our relationships with our customers. Sure enough, the data had gone – irretrievable – the entire hard drive had wiped itself clean. Now, being an IT company, we had backups. Not one, not two, but three different types of backup. Whereas losing data can be difficult, inconvenient or embarrassing, it is inexcusable for a computer company to lose its own data. Out of those three backups, two failed. We were able to retrieve all of the data from the third backup, a new machine was purchased and set up so

that, in essence, you wouldn’t know that you were working on anything different. We take great care of our computers, and yet there was a failure. Computers can fail at any stage, often with little or no warning. We cannot afford to lose our own data – but how about you? Your data is always your own responsibility – can you afford to lose everything that is stored on your computer? Backups are like insurance – you hope that you will never need them but they are there in case you do. They are inexpensive safety nets to ensure that should anything happen to your computer you will still have access to everything that you have stored on it. If you would like help or advice on ensuring your data is backed up, please do get in touch with us.

Local History - Part 39

Mike Laslett

Seeing Red: letter boxes and phone boxes

Letter boxes have become a national icon, recognised the world over. The Royal Mail estimates there are about 100,000 boxes in the UK. This year celebrates the 175 anniversary of the Penny Black, the world’s first adhesive postage stamp, which bore a portrait of the young Queen Victoria. Sir Rowland Hill, its inventor, lived at 11, Hanover Crescent , Brighton during the 1840’s. Before letter boxes, letters were taken to a Receiving House (effectively an early Post Office) and delivered for one penny. Anthony Trollope, now more famed as a novelist, was working in the 1850’s as a Surveyor for the Post Office. This involved him travelling to Europe where he saw letter boxes in France and Belgium. After a trial in the Channel Islands, boxes were introduced nationally in 1853 with many differing local styles and colours, such as the green one illustrated which I spotted recently at the National Railway Museum in York. Such boxes could be hard to find and the familiar red colour was settled on by 1874.

In 1866 William Penfold designed a standard six sided box. Few Penfolds exist today and many, like this one on Brighton’s Madeira Drive, are replicas. Improved designs led to the standard Type A and B pillar boxes by 1879. One Type ‘A’ , with its ornate top, is diagonally opposite Waitrose while the other example is the ‘B’ type outside Brighton Town Hall. Note Queen Victoria’s cypher VR denoting the ROYAL Mail!

Above: Top down view of type ‘A’ pillar box. Right: Type ‘A’ Left: Victorian Type ‘B’

Wallboxes were introduced in 1857 as a cheaper alternative to pillar boxes, either set in an existing wall or in a purpose built pillar. This one is in Rottingdean.

It is estimated that there are fewer than 160 pillar boxes bearing the Edward VIII cypher since he abdicated within one year of accession. There is just one example in Brighton, at Warmdene This K6 phone box in Road, Patcham. Rottingdean was designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott who also designed Liverpool Cathedral and Power Stations at Battersea and Bankside (now Tate Modern.) His grandfather Sir George Gilbert Scott designed The Midland Grand Hotel, St Pancras and The Albert Memorial.

Matinee Melodies

33

Matinee Melodies is a hit! Wednesday 10 June saw the opening of a brand new musical show, “Matinee Melodies”, aimed squarely at seniors in the local community, in and around the Peacehaven area. Saltdean based entertainment agency and producers First & Foremost Entertainment Ltd., realised that there was a desperate need for quality, afternoon entertainment for local seniors, their friends and families, and as a result “Matinee Melodies” was born. Professional entertainers Gary Richard, a seasoned Variety Artist and former headliner at The Royal Hippodrome, Eastbourne, and West End performer Peter Stanford, star of over 15 major musicals, including West End hits such as “West Side Story” & Disney’s “Beauty & The Beast”, deftly steered this musical cavalcade bursting with popular songs, jokes, dance routines and lots of audience participation. Their first show played to a rapturous capacity crowd at The Peacehaven Meridian Centre Main Hall, and due to its enormous success, brand new shows will now be produced every couple of months, with the next, “Matinee Melodies 2”, scheduled for Wednesday 9 September at 2:30pm. Feedback from various organisations, groups and clubs has been unanimously positive: “Matinee Melodies is a superb show not to be missed.” - Ron Clewer (Chairman of Peacehaven & Telscombe Good Companions Club) “Congratulations on producing the perfect senior’s entertainment for the local community.” - Cathy Gallagher (Chairman of Saltdean Residents’ Association). “We hope that the “Matinee Melodies” shows will continue to be supported by the local community and become a popular focal point for seniors to get together on a regular basis, enjoy some quality musical entertainment and share a nice cuppa or an interval ice cream with friends and family”, says artistic director Chris Neilson.

“For those patrons with mobility issues”, adds Chris, “we have door to door transportation available through our friends at the C.T.L.A., and the venue is entirely wheelchair accessible. So there’s really no excuse for anyone not to come along and have fun! At just £6.00 for a two hour show, (including interval), even the ticket price will make you smile!” Over half of the tickets for “Matinee Melodies 2” have already been sold, so advance booking is recommended. By Telephone: Call FREE 0800 2707 567 to pay by debit/credit card. In Person: From The Information Office at The Peacehaven Meridian Centre, or On The Door on the day of the performance (subject to availability). With Transport: To book tickets with Door to Door transport included, call: 01273 517332.

Neighbourhood Watch

No Cold Calling Zone We are very pleased to announce that at last, West Saltdean is now a No Cold Calling Zone! (East Saltdean to follow in the near future). Residents of West Saltdean will, by now, have received a letter from the Police explaining about No Cold Calling Zones together with a peel off sticker that the Police and NHW urge you to display in your door or window. The Police will also be erecting No Cold Calling Street Signs in the area. At some point in the past we have all had to deal with annoying cold callers ringing our doorbell and wasting our time trying to sell us or interest us in a product we do not want. Occasionally Cold Callers are from genuine companies but unfortunately most others are not. The No Cold Calling zone means exactly what it says, No Cold Callers are allowed. We are sure that this is good news to many of you who get frustrated by these callers and from now on they are not permitted to call at your door. At present, Registered Charities still have permission to cold call to raise funds for their worthwhile causes so this new scheme doesn’t apply to them. The peel off window sticker has been provided to every household in West Saltdean and is clear in its message and we must stress that in order for this scheme to work and be successful it is vital that they are displayed. The more window stickers that cold callers see (even Registered

Charities) means they will think twice about knocking and it has been proven in other areas that eventually these people get the message and do not bother to hassle the occupier thus making the scheme a success! Should a Cold Caller still attempt to call at your door, then politely show them your sticker (which they may conveniently not notice) and legally they have to leave you alone and leave your property. On the reverse of this sticker you will see telephone numbers for you to call should any problems arise. If you have mislaid your sticker and would like to display one to keep the cold callers away then please contact us through the contact details below and we will arrange to get one to you. This is a great opportunity to help each other as a Community and we strongly advise you to support this scheme, so go and put the peel off sticker in your front window or door, spread the word and let's keep those Cold Callers away once and for all! for more information about NHW contact: Secretary Linda Hood 01273 306441 email nhw.sro-sec@hotmail.co.uk

WANTED: NEW ART GALLERY ORGANISER AT THE GRANGE! Sadly, Amanda Davidson is standing down from this role in the Gallery, and the Preservation Society is looking to appoint an enthusiastic volunteer to be the new Organiser for the Grange Art Gallery (AGO). This is a large and pleasant gallery, which local artists can book to display and sell their work. The AGO is responsible for finding and liasing with artists who would like to exhibit their work in the Gallery, booking up to two years ahead. We are fortunate in having good administrative support for these bookings and for the website. The AGO is also responsible for local publicity, and works with artists both to hang their work on the change-over days and to arrange Private views.

Financial Advice

Add a little certainty to your future The harsh and sad fact is that we are very likely to be close to someone who gets a serious illness. Take cancer, for instance. According to Macmillan, the cancer charity, one in every three of us will be diagnosed with cancer and one-third will be below the age of 65š. Critical Illness cover Taking out a critical illness policy can offer some financial reassurance. These policies promise to pay out a lump sum not when you die but on diagnosis of a specified condition, for example cancer, a stroke, heart attack, kidney failure or multiple sclerosis.

To receive a complimentary guide covering protection planning, wealth management, retirement planning or inheritance tax planning, contact Mark Holmes on 07966 398581 or email mark.holmes@sjpp.co.uk. š Source: www.macmillan.org.uk. October 2012

Income Insurance An income protection policy is worth serious consideration as it is designed to pay out a monthly sum of money until you die, or more optimistically you reach retirement, return to work or recover from the illness. Whole of Life cover By the time your fiftieth birthday has been and gone, there is every chance that your children will have flown the nest and that your mortgage is, all but, paid off. But that doesn’t mean you should stop thinking about insurance and protecting your family, wealth and health. You will have seen whole of life assurance for older people advertised on day-time television or have received mail shots through your letterbox from an insurer selling over-50s plans to cover funeral costs. However, whole of life assurance policies do more than simply cover funeral costs. They can, amongst other things, also help against a potential inheritance tax (IHT) bill. Many people think of financial planning as creating wealth. It is, but it is also about protecting what you already have. To advertise call 01273 586527 or email info@deansmagazine.co.uk

Myofascial Release Penny Koster, Holistic Pain Therapist Myofascial Release - the gentle release of connective tissue, I have a beautiful log cabin in my garden where I work from, it is an incredibly relaxing and gentle space. I have been a therapist for many years, I have a lot of different qualifications and training, but the therapy I am most passionate about and know first‐hand works completely is myofascial release, Myo-fascial is the connective tissue which joins everything together, covers everything, fills all the gaps holds you together, it has the memory of your life, it relays messages to your brain faster than the nervous System, every single thing that happens to you in your life whether it be good or bad is stored in your subconscious and your fascial system, The fascia is like a giant web made up of collagen, elastin and ground substance it covers you from top to toe with no orifices unlike your skin, it moves constantly within your body, it penetrates, covers, protects every organ, muscle, ligament, tendon, bones everything- we are fascia, scar tissue is damaged fascia that has gone hard and dehydrated, that is why generally women get more lower back problems then men because they have hysterectomies, C-sections and end up with fascia that is damaged, dehydrated and hard (scar tissue) so no longer moves and consequently pulls on areas like the lower back, fascia can become hardened dehydrated and stop moving and therefore cause problems, discomfort, pain, disease for many many different reasons I generally call it life. Another example because we are one complete unit everything is connected you could have a pain in your shoulder and the pain could possibly originate in your lower back, or maybe your neck or both. Myofascial release is being called the missing link and I passionately believe this to be true, I believe in the not too distant future everyone will be having these treatments, The cause of discomfort, pain is the collagen layer of the fascia, this is the layer that has to be released from its stuck, dehydrated, no longer moving position! An Analogy if you step on a

hosepipe the flow is impaired. I am highly trained in myofascial release, I am trained to Body read to know where the problem is and then to un-stick it.. The whole world needs to know about this treatment! I feel very passionately that everyone should understand how it works, and as much as possible be able to do it to themselves and each other. There is no such thing as 'I have that pain because I'm getting old' No-one needs to have pain! Exceptions being if you break a leg or have an accident et cetera, I give these treatments which are extremely powerful but at the Same time very gentle, I also educate people so that they can self-care in the future and when they have a pain they understand why it's happening, and what they can do about it, ABSOLUTELY NO ONE HAS TO BE IN PAIN. Everyone is different sometimes it takes longer than others, IT IS WORTH THE WAIT! If you're interested in having a treatment and want to learn more about myofascial release and myself please go to: www.trigger-points.me.uk or phone me on 07951 117826

Rottingdean & Saltdean Lions

Lion’s events Our busy summer continues as we look forward to the autumn with our team based Golf Day and Sponsored Swim. Donkey Derby Seaford 31 August Our famous bar will be at the Newhaven, Peacehaven & Seaford Lions’ Donkey Derby on Bank Holiday Monday, 31 August, at Seaford while the thirst making races are being held. This is always an exciting day out for all the family while raising much needed funds for charities and the local community – I hope you will be able to join us here too. Sponsored Golf Day, East Brighton Golf Club, 18 September Next month, for all of you that enjoy a good round of golf, there is the Sponsored Golf Day being held at East Brighton Golf Club on 18 September. This fundraising event is in aid of the Sussex Air Ambulance. There will be teams of three competing for prizes. Entry is £150 per team which includes coffee before and a hot meal after. Tee off will be from 09:30. There are still places available for additional teams. Please make contact soon if you would like to enter a team. The Lions Swimathon, Roedean School, 11 October Soon invitations will be sent out for our popular Swimathon. On 11 October our popular Sponsored Swim at Roedean School Pool will be held. The swim is held annually to raise money for local charities. Groups, through entered teams, raise funds by obtaining sponsorship with the proceeds being split between their own group or charity and the Lions’ principal beneficiary, Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospice. Teams swim for one hour with the aim of swimming as many lengths as possible. In the past we have had teams from local pubs, schools, scouts and girl guide/brownie groups and even solo swimmers - all are most welcome. Every team is a winner in this marvellous fundraising event. Please make contact soon if you would like to enter a team. We have recently started a new year for the Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions. The last event held, for last year, was the annual Rottingdean Lions Fayre back

in June and over £3,500 was raised. This marked the end of a very successful year for Lion President Peter Silvey. On behalf of the Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions I would like to congratulate Peter on a great year and also I would like to wish our new Lion President Alistair Lang an equally triumphant year – long may it continue. If you would like more information on any of the above activities, to book a team for the Golf Day and/or for our Sponsored Swim please contact Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions on 08458 339617 or email at info@rottingdeanandsaltdeanlions.org.uk.
