Welcome to the August Edition…

Anyone who keeps track of such things will notice that the magazine has increased its page count this month, which is always a good indication of how busy we are with new advertisers and local articles, in fact we have had to hold over at least 3 articles till the September edition simply due to a lack of space, for which I apologise to the contributors concerned. Our article on the Deans Orchestra appears on page 45, however there is not space there to include their picture so it appears here, we wish them every success and welcome future news.

George Antoni “COASTAL INTERVENTIONS" September 4th - 17th In the short time he’s been painting George Antoni has had an encouraging response. His solo exhibition at The Grange in May 2013 acted as something of a springboard. He’s currently one of the resident artists at The Chalk Gallery, Lewes and his paintings sell locally and internationally, pretty much as fast as he can produce them. He's not content to rest on his laurels though. His work is changing all the time, constantly experimenting with new ideas and methods. Every painting entails a new process of discovery. "I want the painting to end with the idea rather than start with it. That way it's as new to me as it is to the viewer. If I know where something is going, I get bored. The work has to excite and surprise me to the very end". This September, George is back at The Grange for a joint show with, Leila Godden, who's organic and dramatic paintings are inspired by her connection with the sea and complement George's own paintings. Fans of each others work, they have collaborated to

bring you an exhibition entitled COASTAL INTERVENTIONS. George will be showcasing all new works, focusing on colour, simplicity of composition and a new level of deterioration to evoke the brutality and beauty of a weather beaten coastline. "In this collection of abstracts I want to create an impression of ongoing degradation. I want the viewer to feel that the next time they look at the paintings, they will have changed, with ghosts of what was there before and indications of what is to come." An extensive range of his paintings can be found on his website www.georgeantoni.net

Google it When you need something these days the chances are you'll Google it - Google Search is among the most widely used tools in the world. But are you using it to its full potential? Five Smart Ways To Use Google Search This Summer: Flight Search: Whether you already know where you want to go or whether you're after suggestions, Google Flight Search can help you out with ideas and prices; even if you're not planning a trip at the moment it's a fun place to while away time dreaming. Currency Converter: Want to know how many Euros you'll get for your money before setting off on your holidays? Just type in "Euros to British Pounds" in the search area and you'll have a box open up giving you the latest conversion rates. No Comprende: Unsure of the language used in your holiday destination? Just ask Google Translate. Type in your question, select the language you need to know how to ask it in and up

it pops - you can listen to the pronunciation and there's also a mobile app to take along to the Taverna. Plan Your BBQ: Google will use your current location and let you know what the weather is like all you need to do is type in "what is the weather". And if you're off to see friends just add their location: "what is the weather in London". Boil An Egg: OK, not strictly true, as yet Google can't physically cook your eggs, but you can use it to time your cooking to perfection. Simply type into the search box "set a timer" and set it for the amount you need. There are a whole host of other ways to use Google, but we hope this is enough to get you through the British summer.

Dave Osbourne You might have seen this guy practicing on the under cliff walk, or zooming by on his bicycle carrying his drums in his backpack on his way to perform for schools in Sussex and the rest of the UK. He’s also been entertaining crowds at The Brit Awards, Glastonbury, and even appeared on Blue Peter…he’s Puncture Kit – The Bicycle Drummer and he’s now made a home right here in Saltdean. Dave Osborne is the designer and drummer of Puncture Kit – his transport and drum kit. Dave designed Puncture Kit after arriving from Australia to the UK in 2008. As an avid cyclist, he bought his single speed bike when he first arrived. With his bike turned upside down, fixing a puncture in London’s Green Park one day…the idea just came…”I could bolt drums to that frame!”. Since then, David has dedicated himself to the on-going study of drumming and percussion and the challenge of developing his drumming solo performances and recordings. He practices hard at Studio 284 in Brighton and also recorded a drum loop pack there for Brightonbased music sample producers Loopmasters. He’s recently returned from performing at The Tour de France throughout Yorkshire including the opening ceremony at Leeds Arena…he was even the opening act to the BBC News at six coverage of the Tour de France that evening! A unique service Dave has just kicked off is his mobile drum lessons. Aware of how difficult it can be for parents and students to travel after school to get to a lesson, Dave offers to come to your home to teach. Mums and Dads can spend their valuable time after work at home…not waiting in a car at a studio! Don’t worry he has a quiet practice kit that he uses himself that he can bring too!! Carrying drums to gigs, studios and lessons on a bike!...pretty logical...Puncture Kit Dave is surely making a name for himself here in Saltdean!

Health & nutrition advice

Bridgeford’s Best Bites:

Almonds Native to Mediterranean / Middle East and spread historically to north Africa and south Europe and more recently to California. Wild almonds are bitter and toxic while domestic almonds are not! Almond is a kernel or seed not a nut. Almonds reduce serum cholesterol and oxidized low-density lipoprotein (LDL) levels and may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. They are a very good source of many nutrients: plant sterols, dietary fibre, plant protein, antioxidants, flavonoids; skins are rich in polyphenols, low in saturated fatty acids, rich in monounsaturated and unsaturated fatty acids; Heart protective: α‐tocopherol, ar‐ ginine, magnesium, copper, manganese, calcium, potassium. SCIENCE: Anti-Inflammatory / Anti-Oxidant: due to flavonoids and polyphenols, especially in the skin. May account for the reduction in Coronary Heart Disease risk in addition to lowering cholesterol. Prevent effects on oxidative stress and DNA damage caused by smoking. Almond skin reduced oxidative stress and inflammation in an inflammatory bowel disease model. Cancer: Almond consumption may reduce colon cancer risk. Cardiovascular: Nuts as part of a diet using multiple heart-healthy foods to lower cholesterol surpasses that of typical cholesterol lowering diets used to reduce cardiovascular risk and reduces serum lipids and blood pressure.

Prebiotic: Finely ground almonds altered the composition of gut bacteria by stimulating the growth. Skin: α‐Tocopherol and polyphenols in almonds, applied to human skin equivalent, provided photoprotection against UVA. Adding Almonds to your Diet ● Sprinkle on salads and steamed vegetables ● Eat as a snack raw or roasted ● Add to smoothies, use unsweetened almond milk ● Add to a meal to lower the glycaemic index We are happy to advise you on your health matters. Cholesterol: Conflicting evidence: A meta-analysis did not support almonds solely for their lipid modifying effects, calling for further investigations. Others show benefits: on atherosclerotic lesions in mice; 50-100g almonds 5 times per week contribute to reduced plasma total cholesterol and LDL more than by reducing dietary saturated fatty acid; a simultaneous decrease in dietary saturated fatty acid should further improve lipid profiles. Diabetes: Conflicting evidence: One study shows nuts have cardiovascular benefits but their effect in diabetic patients is unclear. Others show benefits: Almonds as part of a healthy diet can improve inflammation and oxidative stress in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and improve markers of glucose control. Almonds included with breakfast decrease blood glucose concentrations and increase satiety in adults with impaired glucose tolerance. Glycaemic Index: In addition to lowering serum cholesterol levels, almonds may reduce the glycaemic impact of carbohydrate foods with which they are eaten. Obesity: An almond-enriched diet and a low calorie nut-free diet resulted in similar weight loss. 43g per day of almonds after a meal lowered serum glucose responses, reduced hunger and desire to eat and did not increase the risk for weight gain. LOCAL BUSINESS

Memory: Almond treated rats showed significant improvement in learning and memory and enhanced tryptophan levels and serotonin turnover in brain. Almonds may be a useful memory-restorative for dementia in Alzheimer patients. Polycystic ovary syndrome: Nut intake benefited plasma lipids and androgens in PCOS.

Musketry Staff

The National Guard comes to Saltdean

When war broke out in 1914, Saltdean was open downland, with a row of coastguard cottages on the coast road and a few farm buildings Inland, along the western valley, roughly just north of where St Nicholas’s Church Hall stands today, were The Butts, or targets. On high ground, 1,000 yards to the west - and therefore approximately where Lustrells Crescent is now located - were the firing positions of the Rifle Club, the brainchild of Rudyard Kipling. This had opened on 20 October 1900 with some 40 members.

manoeuvres. Every day, parties of men were conveyed in them to the range for musketry practice and instruction. So Saltdean, thanks to Rudyard Kipling, did indeed make a contribution to the war effort! Douglas d'Enno

In 1915, volunteers from London in the shape of the National Guard, or more strictly the City of London National Guard, chose Brighton as the centre of their Easter and Whitsuntide manoeuvres. The dates of the Easter visit were from Thursday 1 April to Tuesday the 6th. Musketry was carried on at Saltdean every day except Sunday, with between 100 and 150 men firing every day at 200 yards range. In all some 310 men took part. Some good scores were registered, despite very unfavourable weather, ranging from 33 to 39 out of a possible 40. Only 141 men failed to record a score of 20.

At Saltdean Range

At the Whitsuntide Manoeuvres held in Brighton on 21-24 May, the number was smaller than at Easter, with only between 500 and 600 men attending. At Saltdean, on Whit Monday, no fewer than 176 men underwent a modified recruits' course and achieved a most satisfactory standard. In total, some 520 men fired under highly favourable weather conditions and the results, generally speaking, were excellent. Pity Staff Sergeant Ricketts, who spent the entire four days in the trench under the targets, in charge of the markers, and during that period recorded the results of 5,000 shots – a vital but difficult, tedious and tiring task.

LOCAL BUSINESS

In 1916, from 19 to 23 April, Easter Manoeuvres again took place in Brighton, although with a smaller attendance than in 1915. Many of the men travelled down in motor lorries (23 of them!), which were well used during the whole of the

Successful Letting with Denise Whittington of Lets Go

Cooling down action plan

Many owners have put their properties on the sales market hoping to take advantage of the boom in house prices. However, there are signs that the market is cooling: sales transactions are taking longer and the supply of buyers is dwindling as the recently introduced mortgage restrictions start to take effect –with stringent qualifying criteria limiting the number of people who can ‘afford’ to buy. The number of properties available to rent has been going down as many current landlords have joined the sales bonanza hoping to realise the capital appreciation in their properties. There is now not enough rental property on the market to meet the growing demand from tenants who have had to move because their landlord is selling, or who need to move for other reasons. Unless landlords sell to other landlords, rather than to owner occupiers, their properties are no longer available for tenants. With the shortage of rental property we are seeing an increase in the number of tenants viewing and paying for a property two or three months before they actually need to move, to make sure they are not left without a home. If you are having second thoughts about selling your property, you might like to consider renting it out instead. This can provide an income for a short or longer term. Successful renting can be achieved by making sure your property is in good condition, by thoroughly referencing the tenants, having a comprehensive tenancy agreement, and by regular visits to the property. Recently there has been a trend in people, who wish to retire to our area in a year or two’s time, buying now, and renting out the

property until they need to live in it themselves. Although Buy-toLet mortgages may not be so stringently restricted and therefore not so difficult to obtain, potential landlords need to be careful that with higher house prices, the property they are looking to buy will achieve a rental figure that will cover their costs and provide the income they expect. If you are thinking of buying to let, or changing from selling to renting it is worth speaking to your Local Letting Specialist. They are experts in the local market and can advise you on the rental potential of any property, and what you need to consider before going ahead……… If you are thinking of renting out your property or buying to let and would like to have a chat with Denise or Karen, visit ‘Lets Go Lettings & Property management specialists’ at 59 High Street, Rottingdean, Brighton, ‘phone 01273 236547 or email to: denise@letsgoproperty.co.uk Denise Whittington (B.A) is Director of Lets Go Lettings & Property management specialists, established in 1997. How to spot counterfeit notes Beware: During the last year several counterfeit notes have been exchanged in Rottingdean. Advice from The Bank of England is to check all banknotes being passed in transactions. Their advice is to remain vigilant at all times, and don't rely on just one security feature but check a few such as; ● The feel of the paper and the raised print - Banknotes are printed on special paper that gives them their unique feel. By running your finger across the note, you can feel raised print in areas such as the words ‘Bank of England’ on the front. ● The watermark - Hold the note up to the light and you will see an image of the Queen’s portrait.

high value note. This is so that they can get away with your stock and money from your till. To help identify genuine banknotes, the Bank of England provide a range of free educational materials (booklet/posters/film/deterrent stickers etc) which can be ordered by telephoning 0207 601 4878 or looking at their website.

● The holograms - There is a hologram on the foil patch. If you tilt the note, the image will change between a brightly coloured picture of Britannia and the numerical value of the note. ● The metallic thread - There is a metallic thread embedded in every banknote. This appears as silver dashes on the back of £5, £10 and £20 notes and on the front of £50 notes. If you hold the note up to the light, the metallic thread appears as a continuous dark line. ● Check with ultra-violet light - If you put the note under a good quality ultra-violet light, its value appears in bright red and green numbers while the background is dull in contrast. ● Check the micro lettering - Using a magnifying glass, look closely at the lettering beneath the Queen’s portrait – you will see the value of the note written in small letters and numerals.

● Be aware if working in a shop that those trying to pass counterfeit notes will often try to buy a low value item, using a

Local Lions group in action

Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions The New Year for the Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions begins in July and often around now it is a good time to reflect on the service and achievements of the past twelve months. The Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions have been established for over forty years and during that time has raised significant sums of money to support local charities and community projects. During the 2013 calendar year, the group’s support and appeals have included: the Chestnut Tree House Children’s and Leo House at Home with £2,700; the Marletts Hospice with £650; the Sussex Air Ambulance for the Lions Night Flying Project with £1750; local youth projects with £1661; senior citizen Christmas lunches with £1,199; hydrotherapy sessions for disabled at Southdown Housing Association with £1,360; and a £350 donation to the Rockinghorse Appeal. Donations have also been made to Alzheimer Research, the Lions sight projects and appeals for Philippines disaster relief. In total over £19,600 has been raised and consequently given service to the community and beyond - a successful year indeed. A good example of a recent donation has been £500 to Freddysmile to provide dry suits for child cancer sufferers. This offers them the opportunity to have some fun swimming while still receiving their treatments. This alone offers a fine reason why it is a privilege and honour to be a Lion and to serve. To sustain this level of service, fund raising projects and opportunities are continually being sought and organised. Coming up, the Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions have a sponsored golf day and a sponsored swim as described below: Sponsored Golf Day, East Brighton Golf Club, 12 September Held in aid of Sussex Air Ambulance, teams of three compete for the prizes. Entry is £150 per team to include coffee before and a hot meal after. Tee off is from 09:30. There are still places available for additional teams. Sponsored Swim, Roedean, 19 October The swim is held annually to raise money for local charities. Groups raise funds by obtaining sponsorship with the proceeds being split between their own charity and the Lions’ principal beneficiary, Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospice.

Pagan Justice, ebook – available for Kindle readers on Amazon.co.uk To extend the scope for raising funds a Lion member has written an e-book with all profits from its purchase supporting local charities and community projects. This crime thriller is described below: This book is a crime thriller set in a world where it is asked whether a group of ordinary people can fight back against the extreme injustices they had been dealt in the hands of the international criminal classes. Is it time for Pagan Justice? The e-book can be purchased by going to Amazon and searching for ‘Pagan Justice’ or ‘Jags Arthurson’ either of which will find the book. Or more directly, use the following shortened URL at: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00IRJLHQC. This book has been written under the pen name of Jags Arthurson. The Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions would like to say a big thank you to all readers of the Deans Magazine who have contributed towards their activities this year. For further details on the local Lions please see their website or contact: info@rottingdeanandsaltdeanlions.org.uk or 08458 339617. www.rottingdeanandsaltdeanlions.org.uk

Coastway Carpets & Blinds to close On September 15, one of Peacehaven’s oldest serving shops will close it’s doors for the last time... Owner Richard Lloyd (66) is set to retire after nearly 36 years in the same building. “I should have retired last year, but decided to put it off for a few years. However, my brother died a few months ago out of the blue and now I am seeing things in a different light. I will miss the shop but am looking forward to a new chapter in my life. Coastway Carpets opened in 1979 in a small old betting shop on the Coast road. In the next 10 years they added the offices and warehouse behind and the cafe next door to make the large store it is today. We will be having a big sell off of stock, this will start on 1 August, (please see Advert below).
