Welcome

Welcome to the May Edition… Anyone visiting Brighton town centre recently can’t have failed to notice the nearly 40% increase in car parking charges in the main car parks. I also learned, from one of our advertisers, that the price of a traders parking permit has more than doubled this year. Without even factoring in the constantly rising cost of fuel these are very good reasons to shop and work locally. I will also throw in a mention of our superb local restaurants and takeaways, we have tried most of them at one stage or another and think they are great. Just one little problem though is that we don’t have a Mexican restaurant in the area - if anyone is looking for a business idea, you would be guaranteed one customer! This edition is full of upcoming Deans based events, from music nights to family days. Organisers are working hard to create great entertainment for us, which of course is all in good causes. Please support as many as you can and have fun. Keith - Editor

HUW EDWARDS-JONES The art of wood My interest in all things wood was sparked off whilst training as a navigation officer in the Merchant Navy back in 1975. I found myself using up all my spare time in the Chippy's workshop, carving wooden objects rather than revising for my navigation exams. This started me off looking for somebody to take me on as an apprentice Cabinetmaker/Antique restorer. After working at several small restoration workshops and working on many period and fine pieces of furniture I decided to go it alone, and set up my first workshop in a small shop front in Kemp town. Twenty five years ago I launched myself into making and designing original bespoke pieces and functional sculptural objects of my own design made from finest hardwoods exotic and European. All my pieces are made using timehonoured Traditional methods of construction and other techniques , often learnt by trial and error, to create interesting sculptural shapes. I always felt that working with the finest pieces of Period Furniture from Regency to Art Deco had given me an eye for proportion and classical form which is so important in designing objects with integrity and stature. My first serious piece of work, displayed at the Olympia Daily Telegraph & interior Design

I also met John Bly , Antique furniture expert from the Antiques Roadshow who asked me to appear on his new program Heirlooms. Since then I've exhibited at the Guild Mark exhibition at Philips in London, Cheltenham, Olympia London and I have received to date five Guild Marks and become a Liveryman and Freeman of the City of London. Lido Nights Review
99
LIDO NIGHTS MARCH Live music at the Saltdean Community Centre March saw The Lido Rock ‘n’ Roll back the years for the return of Micky Hart and the Heartbreakers, for an evening of fun and nostalgia. I arrived a little late for this gig only to find the party had started without me! Once more The Lido was packed to capacity and on the dance floor there wasn’t even enough room to swing round a blue suede shoe. The ever popular Micky Hart and the Heartbreakers were on stage confidently bashing out Rock ‘n’ Roll classics to an enthusiastic audience. They have a good following this band and there were many people from outside the local area who had come to enjoy the show. It was one of those gigs where the dancers (many dressed in distinctive 50s Rock ‘n’ Roll style clothing) were as much fun to watch as the band. Whether they were jiving, doing the jitterbug or strolling along to Wooly Bully, it all added to the sense of fun which essentially is what a Rock ‘n’ Roll gig is all about. There are no real surprises with song choices. Rock ‘n’ Roll music has always been defined by the era of the 50’s to mid 60’s. Give or take a bit of 70’s Showaddywaddy and 80’s Shakin’ Stevens and that’s about it. But these simple three chord tunes with their 12 bar progressions will probably still
have people dancing in another fifty years time. How many modern day artists or songs can you confidently say that about. The Heartbreakers are a slick and polished band who know their audience and do what they do very well. However – they should maybe treat themselves to a new PA system. The clarity of sound could have been better and any spoken words were completely lost. When they called the raffle at half time, I didn’t have a clue whether I had won or not! That point aside, this was another great evening and another great band at The Community Centre. On Saturday May 19, we have a brand new six piece band performing called “Epic 80’s”. As the name suggests they play a mixture of 80’s disco, soul and funk. So if you used to dance the night away at the Pink Coconut and Buzbys to the likes of Shalamar, Luther Van Dross, Kylie and Culture Club then the guys and girls of Epic 80s will have you bopping in the aisle’s ( dodgy eighties style clothing entirely optional !! ) . Lido Nights is run by the Saltdean Community Association . Comments or questions to : lidonights@hotmail.co.uk

Computer tips from Dolphin Computer Upgrades

Computer Tips & Advice 31
Speed it up! If you have reached the stage of thinking that the best way to speed up your computer or your laptop is to hurl it through the nearest window, may we hold you back for just a little while? We've collated our top five, our simplest check list, to see if there are alternatives to testing Newton’s law of gravity in speeding up your IT. 1. Viruses: I know, we do go on a bit about viruses don't we? But the fact is that millions of people are victims to them every single week. Even those who have an anti virus installed can still fall prey to them - do a virus scan if you know how to, and if not just ask us. 2. RAM: not all computers or laptops can have memory added, but a great many can - if yours is able to take more then it could speed it up significantly. Again, if you are unsure please feel free to ask us. 3. Disc Space: it doesn't matter whether you have a laptop or a desktop; you should always have 25% of your hard drive free at all times. Over loading your hard drive will lead to a lethargic laptop.
4. Internet: here's a thought - what if it's not your computer's fault? Some internet provision is so slow it could feel like your laptop is taking forever - and if it's slower in some parts of the house this can be resolved very simply. 5. Router: You may have super internet provision, but has your router been configured correctly? Or is it clashing and fighting with your neighbour's router by both trying to access the same channel? Please don't let your IT stress you out at all - we are always happy to take a look, or have a chat, and see if we can give you stress free IT. In the meantime, we wish you, as always, continued happy and safe computing.

Saltdean Community Association news
Saltdean Community Association events update. Saltdean Community Association (SCA) regularly runs ‘Lido Nights’ – live music events – at Saltdean Lido. Word is spreading about these and we regularly have the hall filled to capacity. We now also have bands contacting us wanting to play the venue. This means we can introduce the regulars to some new and exciting bands as well as keeping the favourites. It is not all about music; April saw the first Arts and Alternative Therapies Fair, which saw a steady stream of visitors. It is always difficult with a new event but as we have had people book up for tables for our next one it definitely seems to have been a success. Another new event last month was the Quiz Night. Sixteen teams pitted their knowledge against each other and at the interval it was pretty close but there was a winner and in time honoured tradition, a team who claimed the wooden spoon.
A big THANK YOU to everyone who supports these events. All the profits go back into running your community centre. There are few people who cannot be aware of the issues currently facing the Lido. However, the SCA committee wants to assure residents that these difficulties have not affected the activities and events that we run at the centre. Check out our website at www.saltdeancc.co.uk for what’s happening. We have some exciting events planned for the rest of 2012.

Successful Letting
Successful Renting 14 with Denise Whittington of Lets Go
Buyers & Sellers & Short Lets The seasonal increase in activity in the sales market has contributed to a greater demand by tenants as more landlords have taken their properties off the market to try to sell them. In many areas rents have been rising in response to increased tenant demand. This makes Buy-to-Let an increasingly attractive financial investment and well worth considering now. The growth of the demand for private rented property has been steadily increasing over the past 10 years. It has been estimated that over 1 million extra rental properties will be needed in the UK by 2016. The private rented sector and Buy-to-Let landlords are considered to be crucial to the future supply of housing. With the future of the economy uncertain, and with poor returns on other forms of investment, including commercial property, residential property remains a good long term investment. If you are trying to sell but not receiving the offers you want, consider renting your property out for two or three months. Short Lets, especially at this time of year and in our area can command high rents. This type of rental is ideal for professional people who come to work here for a time, or for those who are having their own property refurbished and need to move out for a short period. There are others who are considering buying but want to live in the area while they look for a suitable propertythey may even like your property so much that they end up buying it! Or you might decide to continue renting the property for a longer period rather than selling. Some tenants will be sympathetic to the situation of the owner who is trying to sell, especially if they are potential buyers or sellers themselves and may agree for the sales marketing to continue whilst they are living at the property. It can be difficult for people these days to decide on the best course of action. Sometimes there is no easy answer. At Lets Go we aim to help our clients make decisions by offering help and advice on the options available and to give support where it is needed. We can provide a whole range of servic-
es covering the sale and letting of your property and even help with maintenance and renovation. If you would like help and advice to make a decision about selling or renting your property and would like to have a chat with Denise visit Lets Go at 59 High Street, Rottingdean, Brighton, ‘phone 01273 236547 or email to: denise@letsgoproperty.co.uk.

Bridgeford’s Best Bites:
Vitamin B3 Studies by Dr. A Hoffer M.D.Ph.D. The anti-pellagra vitamin was the 3 water soluble vitamin to be discovered and so named vitamin B3, also known in various forms as niacin, nicotinamide, nicotinic acid. It is made in the body from the amino acid, tryptophan (found in turkey) and should have been classified as an amino acid rather than a vitamin, which cannot be made in the body. On average 1mg of vitamin B3 is made from 60mg of tryptophan. Pellagra could be known as tryptophan deficiency disease. Pellagra was endemic in southern U.S.A until the 1940s, described by the four D's dermatitis, diarrhoea, dementia and death. Dementia is a last stage phenomenon, in the early stages it resembles more the schizophrenias. Early pellagrologists gave patients in mental hospitals small amounts of nicotinic acid; if they recovered they were diagnosed with pellagra, if not they were diagnosed with schizophrenia. Later Dr Hoffer worked with larger doses of B3 for schizophrenia. Dr Hoffer was involved in establishing two other major uses for vitamin B3, apart from preventing pellagra. It's action in lowering cholesterol (HDL) and its therapeutic role in the schizophrenias and other psychiatric conditions. It has also been found helpful in arthritis, senility, children with learning and behavioural disorders, addiction including drugs and alcohol, and in relieving the body of the pernicious effect of chronic stress, freeing it to carry on its function of repairing itself more efficiently. Vitamin B3 is a specific antidote to adrenalin. Bill Wilson of Alcoholics Anonymous used it in 1960 after seeing positive results by psychiatrist, Dr Hoffer with schizophrenic patients, some who were also alcoholic. Bill was curious and took 3g daily. Within a few weeks fatigue and depression, which had plagued him for years was gone. He gave it to 30 friends in AA. 10 were free of anxiety, tension and depression within one month, 10 more were well in 3 months. After 6 months he was convinced it would be a useful addition to treatment in AA. Pregnant women in last trimester convert tryptophan to niacin three times as efficiently as non pregnant females. There is evidence that the contraceptive steroids, estrogens, stimulate tryptophan oxygenase, the enzyme that converts tryptophan into niacin. Women on average live longer than men, who have been shown to increase their longevity by taking niacin. Is the longev-

Neighbourhood Watch
47
Your monthly update from the Saltdean, Rottingdean & Ovingdean Neighbourwood watch.
KEEP A LID ON CRIME Each incident or emergency is different, and there are no hard and fast set of rules for what you report, and in which order. However, a simple mnemonic like LID - Location, Identification, Description - will help order your thoughts. The Contact Centre tells us that many people are nervous at calling the Police, or are shaken by what they have witnessed. The two essential points the Centre is keen to emphasise is that reports should be made as quickly as possible after the event, and accurate descriptions given, such as car registrations (even if only a few numbers or letters). Both of these basic points can make an enormous difference to the outcome. When you speak to the controller, tell them if you are a member of the Neighbourhood Watch, and make a note of the incident serial number that you will be given. The serial number and date will be required if you want to add any further information about the incident, or for any future insurance claims. LOCATION: The What, Where, When of the incident IDENTITY: Give your name and address and any other names of people involved in the incident DESCRIPTION: Describe the incident as accurately as possible. Of particular importance are car registration (even partial numbers/letters) along with make and colour and/or any markings etc. you may remember. Try to note any unusual or striking features about the person(s) involved.
STOP PRESS!!!! Neighbourhood Watch Community Event coming to Saltdean on 23rd June! Watch this space in the next edition to find out all the information on this exciting Security & Safety in the Community Event.
