Welcome to the September Edition… This month sees a welcome return to our fitness columnist - Marco Gasgo who didn’t make the August edition due to lack of space. We hope to be able to run his articles as often as possible as he has an interesting philosophy that exercise should he fun rather than painful, read all about this on page 25. I couldn’t help but notice that we have reached number 48 in the Dolphin computer tips and number 18 in the Local History series this month, we haven’t been counting for some of our other long running features but I’m sure they must be several years along too. It is gratifying to see that these remain popular features in the magazine as we still get comments from readers about them, however there is always scope for other local writers to put pen to paper (or keyboard to email) and send us in something you are interested in and would like to see in the magazine. Doreen Savage My name is Doreen Savage and in the 1970's I moved down from Yorkshire to live in Saltdean. I immediately fell in love with the area. paint my walls white and fill the house with bright colourful I have always had a great fondness for making things and pictures my earliest recollection was sitting on the step outside my I got books from the library on Kandinsky, Miro, and house knitting tiny garments with darning needles and picasso. I do love colour and I have always admired David sewing cotton, for my tiny dolls. I recently built a doll’s Hockney house and one of the items I made was a bedspread using the same method. Are you aware? Are you aware of malware? Here are five terms you may have heard of, all things that you don’t want wandering around your computer or laptop: Malware: The term malware combines two words: “malicious” and “software”. It’s used to describe the undesirables such as viruses, spyware, worms, Trojans, or anything that is designed to perform malicious operations on your computer. As the name suggests, malware is capable of doing very nasty things and covers all of the following: Ransomware; unfortunately this form of malware has become much more common of late. Once it has been downloaded it will prevent you from doing anything else on your computer, demanding some form of payment to have your computer unlocked. Access to your computer is, quite literally, ransomed by the cyber-criminal. Scareware: similar to the tactics employed by ransomeware, scareware will play on your emotions in an attempt to illicit payment from you. It’s most common guise is to masquerade as a tool to help fix your computer, but when you click on it you will be informed that your system is ei-

ther infected or broken in some way. The scareware will then claim to be able to fix your problems if you pay them. Adware: this is advertising-supported software which automatically plays, displays, or downloads advertisements to your computer. It can be used to track your movement online tailoring advertisements to what it feels you will be interested in, often by delivering pop-up ads or by installing a toolbar in your browser. Spyware: similar to adware, spyware monitors your computer and reveals the information it collects from your online activities to an interested party. This can be benign when it tracks what web pages you visit; or it can be incredibly invasive when it monitors everything you do with your mouse and keyboard. A decent antivirus will detect and remove both adware and spyware

Putting the F Word back into Fitness: What if we are doing it wrong? What if everything that we think we know about fitness is so complicated and convoluted that we are just getting mixed up, confused or missing the bigger picture. Is it true that there is no gain without pain? During the last couple of weeks I have thought to myself and spoken to a large mix of people on when they enjoy exercise the most or more to the point why they stopped! Now this article was originally going to be about what types of training you could do for fat loss other than running but far more important to that is putting the F word back into Fitness! The reality is that we are social animals and if you think of all the lasting popular sports, running races, exercise classes, martial arts, team sports where we connect in some way with others and form a ‘Tribe’ of likeminded individuals. In this camaraderie and supportive environment even if it is just meeting a friend we can work hard, sometimes pushing ourselves further than we would have on our own to achieve new levels of fitness. It is not sustainable to pursue fitness goals in the longer term by plugging in our headphones, slogging away in solitary confinement on machines similar to that of a conveyor belt in a factory week after week.

This communal gathering atmosphere is only part of what is missing in today’s fitness world. If you watch children at play they do not count sets or worry how many miles they ran this week in comparison to last. They simply do, they run, tumble and jump and they have fun along the way. So how does this translate to us right here, right now trying to maintain some semblance of our health and fitness? Well whatever you do we have established it has to be enjoyable, do it with friends or like-minded people and if you aren’t enjoying your fitness journey….try a different route. Woodingdean: The Industrial Schools Mike Laslett

I am sorry that the residents of Woodingdean have not heard more of their local history since my second article. In that article I featured The Woodingdean Well, the deepest hand dug well in the world, whose depth is greater than the height of the Empire State Building. Local beach cleaning volunteers

Your beaches need You! A hot water bottle, a tyre, a pair of dentures, hundreds of cable ties, a weird waxy substance, tons of bottle tops, reams of fishing tackle, a considerable piece of fishing net, and a length of rubber tubing. Just a few items taken from six bulging bags of rubbish hauled off Ovingdean beach in just one hour, there's no doubt The Deans Beach and Environment Volunteers is doing a great job. Set up in January by local conservationists Atlanta Cook and Libby Darling, the group meets once a month to pick up litter from the Deans' beaches – not just because it looks ugly, but because it's dangerous too. Broken glass blights the groins and plastic is also a big issue. Swept out to sea, where it absorbs toxic chemicals, it breaks down into smaller and smaller pieces, but never completely rots away. It enters the food chain when it's mistakenly eaten as food by smaller organisms, such as jellyfish, which go on to be eaten by bigger marine life. Larger sea animals including birds and turtles can also be injured or killed by becoming entangled in or by ingesting big plastics. Marine litter has reportedly doubled in the last 15 years, the majority of it dumped by us the public, so it makes sense that we should pick it up – and what better way than this to do it? Lasting for around an hour, a Deans Beach & Environment Volunteers is full of feel-good

factor and family friendly too, on sunny days it's rounded off with a picnic. Completely safe, gloves and grabbers are provided for handling sharps. The next clean-up is on Sunday September 22 on Rottingdean beach at 11am – meet at the end of the slipway. Garlic (Allium Sativum) Garlic is a close relative of onion, shallot, leek and chive. It is native to Asia , a long time staple in the Mediterranean and was used by the Ancient Egyptians for culinary and medicinal purpose. It was rare in traditional English cuisine though is now a popular staple. Allicin When garlic is crushed or chopped a substance it contains called alliin comes into contact with the enzyme allinase, producing allicinin, the odorous medicinally active substance. Allicin is unstable and lost when garlic is cooked, chopped or left to stand for a few days. Dried garlic powder is thought to contain both alliin and allinase so still has allicin releasing potential. Allicin enters the blood stream when eaten soon reaching all parts of the body. Elimination is mainly via the lungs and skin, giving the characteristic smell of garlic on the breath and sweat. Inconsistent Study Results Various clinical trials and meta-analyses show the positive impact of garlic on several factors of health, though contradictory results are also reported. A possible reason for inconsistent results is the difference in the garlic preparations used, having varying composition, type, sulphur content and bioavailability. There are also inconsistencies in the studies regarding subjects studied, study duration, dietary control, etc. The doses of garlic used in clinical trials were usually far lower than those used in animal studies, which might affect its potential effects. Different people may have a different response to garlic and it may be more beneficial for specific groups. It seems that more consistent controlled studies with larger groups or more specific groups are needed.

Local groups and events

Five Deans U3A September 12th is enrolment and open day for the Five Deans U3A. Come and join us at St Martin's Hall, Longridge Avenue, Saltdean. 2.15 for 2.30. We guarantee a warm welcome, and a chance to join in our wide ranging activities. If you can't make Sept 12th, then come to any of our monthly meetings, the second Thursday of each month, at the same times. Our monthly meetings are always fun, with carefully chosen guest speakers, and a chance to meet old friends and make new ones. We have interest groups covering a wide range of topics. For the music lovers, we have groups from jazz to classical to Viennese. There is a group for musicians to share the joys of making music. And, new for this year, a singing group. To keep us healthy we offer a weekly keep fit class, carefully tailored to our age group. Tai Chi as well. And the walking group offers regular organised walks that generally aren't too challenging, and with the reward of ending up at a restaurant or a pub. If you'd prefer the reward without the effort, then our luncheon club meets regularly at a variety of venues. Venues this year ranged from the Amex Stadium to a golf club to many of our local restaurants and hotels. Our gardening group might be just what you need to inspire you to put those gardening gloves on. We have groups for poetry, a book group and an art discussion group, German conversation is another of our topics. Sussex History and science are covered too. We have a range of occasional days out which are very popular, and, new for this year, a travel group. And I've kept till last my own favourite, our wine appreciation group. Do come and join us. Most of all, we offer friendship and company, a chance to keep active for longer and to learn a bit more about that subject you always wanted to know about. If the group you'd love to join isn't yet listed, then we'll help you start it.

Rottingdean Camera Club We would like to extend a warm welcome to all local photographers and would-be photographers to join the Rottingdean Camera Club. The Club meets the first and third Mondays of the month, beginning on Oct 7th. at the Whiteway Centre. We have a balanced programme of instruction and presentations, where guests entertain us with tales of their photography, and of course, share their work with us. But most importantly we try to make photography fun and our meetings entertaining. . Our regular competitions help us all to aspire to greater things, and the learned judges comments teach us how to do just that. If you have never seen one of your photographs projected in high quality onto a ten foot screen, then you will find that in itself a treat. Before our first meeting in October we have an exhibition of our photographs in the Rottingdean Grange, upstairs above the library, from September 12th to September 24th so do come and have a look. Maybe you'll be impressed, if so come and join the Club and share in our skills and ideas. Maybe you'll think you can do better. You may be right. Join us and show us.
