Welcome
Welcome to the February Edition… First of all an apology to Johny’s Wares of Woodingdean, this new business were due to appear in the January edition but through an Editor’s over sight were omitted, I hope you will join me in welcoming them to The Deans and support their shop They have a feature on page 17 of this edition. I’m very pleased to see Paul’s Pizza shop has re-opened in Saltdean, which is in spite of huge personal adversity - read all about this in our article on page 31. Stuck of what to do for Valentines Day? May I offer a personal recommendation for Victoria Travel’s French day trip - see page 53. I went on one of their French Trips last year and found it to be superb. Finally I heard from Mike Laslett, our local Historian, today to say that he has had a number of people contact him about his Ocean Hotel article (Jan 2013 edition) with lots of memories and pictures of it, so look out for an update on this in a future edition. My thanks to him and our other regular contributors for all their hard work. Don’t forget if you have something you would like to say please get in touch. Keith - Editor

Adams & Remers Solicitors
Adams & Remers Remember Tom & Sally? Tom has an elderly Aunt Joan who has no children. Joan suffered a nasty fall recently, and is currently housebound after a stay in hospital. The prognosis is good, and she should be up on her feet soon, but the family are concerned for the future. They’ve noticed occasional slight memory loss, and suspect she will need residential care in due course. After Joan’s husband died two years ago, she prepared a Lasting Power of Attorney appointing Tom to act for her on her property and financial affairs. This has proved very helpful, as Tom has been able to register the Power at Joan’s bank and so make sure she has cash to pay for shopping that family and neighbours are doing for her. He’s also helped her set up some direct debits, so that the bills are dealt with without the brown envelopes regularly landing on the doormat. When Joan is back to health, she’ll be dealing with all this herself, with the confidence of knowing that Tom is there and able to help as necessary. Joan continues to make decisions for herself, and enjoys the security of a Lasting Power to help her through this difficult period. Without a Lasting Power of Attorney, when someone loses mental capacity, all their solely held assets become inaccessible, even to their spouse. Even a jointly held house may not be sold without a Court order.
fees to pay the difference between the LA contribution and the actual cost of her chosen care home. Preparing a Lasting Power of Attorney can save much heartache and financial pain. It is also possible for a Deputy to be appointed by the Court of Protection to act on behalf of someone who loses capacity and has not appointed an Attorney, however the process is expensive and takes months to complete. In the meantime, there is no ability to access assets. If you would like more information about Lasting Powers of Attorney, Court of Protection applications and registering of Enduring Powers of Attorney, please contact Rose Macfarlane on 01273 403294. Rose Macfarlane is a solicitor specialising in wills, trusts, estate and tax planning. You can email her at Adams & Remers LLP on rose.macfarlane@adams-remers.co.uk or call her on 01273 403294 for a free ten minute chat to see if she or a colleague can help you. Adams & Remers is a full service law firm, with specialists in property, tax, employment, corporate and commercial, litigation and family law.
The family worry that if Joan’s memory deteriorates, her ability to cope at home (and with her own finances) may reduce. If it becomes necessary for Joan to move to a home, the Local Authority (LA) may be asked to assess her finances This article is not intended to be a full summary of the law and to determine her ability to pay for care home fees. If she has advice should be sought on all issues. more than £23,250 in cash and savings (including her house, as she lives alone) Joan will have to entirely fund her own care. Once her assets deplete to that level, the LA will contribute, or pay all the fees. This will depend on the cost of the care home, and the total assets Joan has left. The family should consider this when helping Joan choose a care home, as if her assets fall to the LA contribution level, it will be important to know that her care home will accept LA funding. If not, Joan may have to move when she has already settled -Retired Nurseand made friends. Tom will be directly involved in these FOR QUALITY BASIC financial questions at the time, as Joan’s Attorney.
NURSE DIRECT
Fortunately, Joan’s husband, Uncle Arthur did some planning of his own during his life and left his share of their assets on trust. So, whilst her assets may be depleted by care home fees, his are secure to continue to provide for Joan in other ways as necessary, and won’t be counted in the LA assessment of her assets. This might help with ‘topping up’

Artist of the month
William Nicholson
The Grange Art Gallery Rottingdean
The Grange Art Gallery and Museum, with its fascinating history of ownership and periodic threats of closure, has come a long way since the renowned artist, William Nicholson, (father of artist Ben Nicholson), lived and painted here. William Nicholson Royal Academy artist is the creator of the Heinneman windmill logo and famous for his woodcuts and beautiful paintings of Rottingdean and the Downs. He is responsible for putting our area on the artistic map. With this in mind, we are naming the refurbished art gallery room The William Nicholson Gallery. Thanks to the enthusiasm of a core group of residents, the Rottingdean Preservation Society was formed to preserve the charm and elegance of this stately house. Locals and visitors alike can enjoy a wonderful array of art and artefacts in its spacious first floor gallery. In 1992 The Grange faced final ruination. The Preservation Society was formed under the chairmanship of John Commin, as a last bid rescue. John had seen an exhibition of artists’ work in the Whiteway Centre spearheaded by local artist Barry Hinchliff. John approached Barry to run the Grange Art Gallery and Barry agreed and promptly set to work, along with others, upgrading the tired looking space. On October 2nd 1993, a grand re-opening exhibition of works by 20 artists including oil paintings by Barry, pencil drawings by Mick Bensley, a pastel by the late Mike Jerrome were proudly shown. Also exhibiting was Ned Hoskins, who had created the first Artist Open House trail as The Fiveways Group in 1982. An auspicious re-opening indeed!
William Nicholson Amanda Davidson
In October 2012 Barry Hinchliff retired and handed over to artist Amanda Davidson. With a new team of dedicated volunteers, The Grange Art Gallery and Museum yet again has undertaken a renovation project with a new look upgrade as befitting its status as an important space for artists, both professional and student alike and in celebration of those past artists and authors who lived and created works of art for posterity. An exciting new schedule of 17 pre booked exhibitions for 2013 includes : "Celebration of Love" a photographic exhibition of home baking by Miranda Harwood, a group exhibition of students’ work from classes at The Whiteway Centre, the local camera group and visiting artists from London and Sardinia. May and December will see The Grange affiliated to the Brighton Festival Artist Open House trail, with exhibitions of local artists’ work. From abstract to traditional, craft to sculpture the world of art and the artists rule supreme. Stewards also play a very important part in the running of the gallery. Please contact Amanda at the Grange 01273 301004 if you are interested in exhibiting your art or if you wish to become a steward.

Computer tips from Dolphin Computer Upgrades Computer Tips & Advice 41
Love your Lap Top, Or Tablet, Smart Phone or PC? All too often we are the harbingers of doom: we warn you about data loss, computer failure, virus infections and hacked accounts. And rightly so, as these are all real threats for you sitting at your laptop. But in this, the month of love, we thought we’d take some time out to promote the positive side of computers and technology. 2013 marked the 30 birthday for the World Wide Web and we’ve come a long way since the internet was “switched on”. In 2012, 21 million households in Great Britain (80%) had Internet access, and of course, this number just keeps rising. Yes there have been “victims” along the way, with some of our most recognisable larger stores falling foul of the cheaper online shopping, but in general it has had a positive effect on us all. ● Got relatives who live far away? You now have the ability to see, speak and interact with them online wherever they are.
● Need information about the latest travel problems? There for you at the click of a button. ● Wanting to market your small, independent business on a huge scale but without the expense? Email and social media marketing right there at your finger tips. There are still those that bemoan the rise of the computer and technology in general, but there is so much to be thankful for. “Phones” are now little online devices, and televisions are incorporating computer technology. This Valentine’s day let us extend our love beyond our nearest and dearest and say a little thank you to those little bits of plastic and metal that most of us really couldn’t live without anymore. As always, we wish you continued happy and safe computing and are more than happy to answer any worries or concerns that you may have.

News from Saltdean Dental Health As many of you will know, this Summer, I got married, and after 6 happy years of working at Saltdean Dental Practice, I will now be spending a large amount of time in London, to start family life with my husband, Sean. Therefore, I am absolutely delighted to introduce Dr Alex Fenech, as my new Principal Dental Partner, who will be taking over not only the majority of the day to day running of the Practice but also the responsibility of your Dental Care and Well-Being. I am absolutely thrilled that he is doing so, as not only is he extremely well skilled and experienced in all aspects of dentistry, but he is also a wonderful and understanding person Dr Helen Marriott (formerly Pollitt) I am delighted to introduce myself to you all as the new Principal Dental Partner at Saltdean Dental Practice. I was born in London and graduated from Guys Kings and St Thomas’ Dental School (London) in 2006. I enjoyed my time at the teaching hospital, where I particularly enjoyed and had a real interest in areas of dentistry such as endodontics (root canal treatment to save teeth) Since then I have worked in various locations including a year in Australia, finding time for a fantastic combination of bungee jumping, skydiving, hiking in the outback (whilst avoiding crocodiles), as well as a great variety of dentistry Closer to home I have also worked largely on the South Coast, principally Portsmouth and Southampton. I am delighted to say that I am now happily settled in Brighton, and absolutely thrilled to have joined Saltdean Dental Practice, as the new Principal Dental Partner. Since graduating, I have been keen to offer patients excellent levels of dental care which has led me to attend numerous courses in restorative dentistry,
which means rescuing very broken down teeth so you can keep your teeth for longer and periodontics (saving loose teeth). I also have an interest in cosmetic dentistry, to help you achieve the smile of your dreams, which can be lifechanging when you can smile with confidence. In addition I provide facial rejuvenation techniques, to turn back the clock, smoothing facial lines and wrinkles using simple injectables, such as Botox and dermal fillers I have a kind, sympathetic and gentle approach to dentistry and aim to provide pain-free treatment for everyone, especially nervous patients, using anaesthetic gel where necessary, for comfortable injections. I very much look forward to seeing you all over the coming weeks and months and hope this will be an exciting time for us all at Saltdean Dental Health Dr Alex Fenech BDS See our advert on the back page 01273 309988

Enid Bagnold
North End House, which faces The Green in Rottingdean, was once the home of the artist Sir Edward Burne-Jones and his family. It later became the home of Enid Bagnold, author and playwright, and her husband, Sir Roderick Jones, the Chairman of Reuters news agency. Their garden inspired her play “The Chalk Garden.” “The Chalk Garden” premiered on Broadway in 1955, receiving several Tony Award nominations. At the Theatre Royal, Haymarket the following year, Edith Evans and Peggy Ashcroft starred in its London debut, directed by John Gielgud. In 1964 a film of “The Chalk Garden” starring John and Hayley Mills, Edith Evans and Deborah Kerr, was made on location at East Dean in East Sussex. However, the best known work by Enid Bagnold was her 1935 story “National Velvet.” It is about Velvet Brown, a teenager living in a small coastal village in Sussex in the late 1920’s. She rides her horse, Piebald, to victory in the Grand National, demonstrating the ability of ordinary women to accomplish great things. It was filmed in 1944 with a young Elizabeth Taylor, who was to remain Enid’s life-long friend. Enid Bagnold died at Rottingdean in 1981 and is buried with her husband in the family vault at St. Margaret's churchyard. Also commemorated is her brother Ralph, founder of the Long Range Desert Group during World War Two, which was a precursor of the SAS. Their great-granddaughter is Samantha Cameron, wife of our current Prime Minister Rottingdean Museum is currently holding an excellent exhibition about Enid Bagnold’s life and work including a collection of first editions, film publicity, and informal family photographs taken in Rottingdean by the legendary photographer Cecil Beaton. Rottingdean Museum, The Grange, Rottingdean. Open weekdays 10.00am – 4.00pm (except Wednesdays), Sundays 2.00pm – 4.00pm. Tel. 01273 301004 Admission is free.

Local news and fund raising appeal
Getting back on his feet to help others A restaurant owner who lost his leg after an attack on his business is taking his first steps on the road to recovery to raise money for the centre that is helping him. Paul Brayshaw was locking up late on August 18 when something was thrown at the front of his pizza shop, smashing the glass frontage and slashing his arm. As he ran for help he fell on the kerb, causing a life-changing injury. His left leg was so badly damaged that after two operations surgeons told him they would have to amputate it below the knee to save him. The father of two young boys spent more than five weeks in hospital and was initially taking nearly 50 tablets a day but, a year to the day since first opening Paul’s Pizza, in Lustrells Vale, Saltdean, (Brighton) he was back in the kitchen. Although his whole life has been turned on its head he brought home his artificial leg on December 19 and aims to take his first 400 steps on it on New Year’s Day to raise money for the Sussex Rehabilitation Centre at Brighton General Hospital, which has been helping him. Paul said: “It’s hard to believe something so stupid has changed my life forever. I was just locking the door to cash up when something was thrown through the window and the broken glass slashed my arm. I just wanted to get out , so turned the key back and ran down the road to call the police. “When I fell my leg went sideways. I tried to get up and carry on running, but it just went sideways again. Luckily, someone called an ambulance for me and I ended up in the Royal Sussex County Hospital for the next five-and-a-half weeks. “In total, I had five operations. After the second one they told me the arteries had been so badly damaged it was beyond repair. The doctor told me my calf muscle was going toxic and there was a risk of dying from blood poisoning if they didn’t take the leg off.” Paul’s left leg was amputated at the knee and he needed a further two operations before he was finally released from hospital in early
October. On crutches, and still in pain, he was determined to re-open his artisan pizza restaurant, serving customers for the first time on November 15, the first anniversary of his business opening. He started rehabilitation in November and hopes, with a lot of hard work, to be walking properly on his artificial limb within a year. Up until now he has taken only a few tentative steps but he is aiming to walk 400 steps with just a stick to help the centre that has been looking after him. Paul said: “The pain is indescribable really. When they amputated my leg they tried to save as many of the nerves as possible, but that means I get a lot of phantom pains. Sometimes it feels as if my foot is on fire or my toes are crunched up. It can be agony. “When I came back to work I just tried to prep as much as possible. I’d only opened the previous November and things were going really well but when you have your own business you don’t earn anything when you are not working. All the bills were still coming in all the time I was in hospital. “It is going really well since I’ve re-opened, even though it has been so difficult.” “It has been the most horrendous time but I have seen some really heart-breaking things while I’ve been having treatment and just want to do what I can to raise some money for the rehabilitation centre.” To support Paul’s fundraising for the Sussex Rehabilitation Centre you can sponsor him at www.justgiving.com/Paul-Brayshaw1.

On Friday 9 October 2012 she was awarded the national award for sustainable gardens from the Society of Garden Designers The SGD held its inaugural Awards event at the Millenium Hotel in London. A glittering event for garden designers eg. Andy Sturgeon; gardening television presenters eg. Jo Swift; stalwarts of the garden design industry and friends of the SGD, such as Raymond Blanc. Juliet’s Sussex-based garden design practice specializes in rural gardens and challenging sites. Her winning garden was a previously derelict, one acre site beside a river, that floods every spring. Juliet has transformed it into a beautiful, natural space in keeping with the surrounding countryside. ‘I wanted to create a magical space, where the family could play with their children and build many happy memories of nature together.’

Health & nutrition advice
Bridgeford’s Best Bites:
Ginger Ginger (root) has been used throughout the world as a therapeutic agent for centuries to treat common colds, fever, to aid digestion, treat stomach upset, diarrhoea, nausea, rheumatic disorders, gastrointestinal complications and dizziness. It part of the same family as tumeric, cardamom and galangal. It is consumed as a food, medicine or spice. It is low in carbohydrates, high in fibre and rich in omega 3 fatty acids, alpha-linolenic acid, antioxidants, micronutrients and lignans, which are a major class of phytoestrogens, which are estrogen-like chemicals Several studies indicate the therapeutic benefits of ginger: It has anti-oxidant, anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, analgesic, antipyretic, antihypertensive and anti-ulcer properties and also offers some protection against radiation and chemical toxicity. Arthritis Osteoarthritis, acute gouty arthritis, joint and muscle pain and possibly rheumatic disorders are helped by ginger's anti-inflammatory properties. Asthma and Airways Problems Ginger aids relaxation in the smooth muscle in the bronchus, helping relieve airways problems. Cancer Benefits have been shown on mucosal tissue and in cancers of the colon, cervix, breast, lung, pancreas, prostate, endometrium, skin, liver and also leukaemia. Diabetes Ginger's anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties show protective effects on diabetic liver, kidney, eye (cataract), neural system complications and possibly related impotence. Inflammation / Neuroprotection / Autoimmune Studies indicate that chronic inflammation plays a major role in the development of various neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, brain tumour, and meningitis; also inflammation related obesity. Nausea and Vomiting / Pregnancy
Ginger is effective in reducing vomiting and the intensity of nausea both in pregnancy and during chemotherapy. It is one of the few herbs/spices to have been proven beneficial and safe during pregnancy, though there are some concerns regarding safe dosage. Adding Ginger Your Diet With so many healing properties, it certainly is worth adding ginger to your daily diet. If you don't like the taste try starting with a tiny portion and increase it over time; else take capsules! · Sprinkle the powder in soups, stews and smoothies · Prepare tea by steeping an inch square of ginger root in hot water, or simmer gently for 5-10 minutes, add honey to taste - or drink packaged tea! · Grate root ginger on a small round hole grater and add to soups and stews · Make an oriental sauce by adding grated ginger to soya sauce, sesame oil and pepper or chilli · Crystallised ginger can be used to prepare sweets We are happy to advise you on your health matters. Your NHW Committee thought that you as our members as well as those non members who regularly read our articles may like to know that they can report incidents of anti-social driving through Operation Crackdown, a scheme developed by the Sussex Safer Roads partnership. You can report anything from speeding, using phones, dangerous or thoughtless driving to drink or drug driving as well as untaxed or abandoned vehicles. Take a look at their website at www.Operationrackdown.org or contact the crackdown hotline at 01243 64 22 22.Their slogan is ‘Don’t Tolerate it….Report it!’ On that subject, the NHW team are contacted sometimes by members who feel unsure whether to report incidents to the police for fear that their details will become public. If you leave details when asked for them, the police assure us they are confidential and will not be passed on to anyone else without your agreement. Also if you report an incident in your area to the police, and don’t want them to visit your home address, you can always tell them that phone contact is all you want. Another way to report incidents or crimes is through Crime Stoppers free on 0800 555 111, which is totally anonymous. Please don’t be concerned about reporting things, the police say “they can only do something if they know about it” and any information no matter how
