Welcome

Welcome to the January Edition… Happy New Year everyone! I hope everyone got what they wanted for Christmas, and didn’t over do it too much on the food and drink. Still there are plenty of advertisers in this month’s edition who will be able to help you get back to your ideal figure. I think it is fair to say that you don’t get much for £1 these days - I still find it hard to believe that a packet of crisps can cost 70p! However the Deans Neighbourhood Watch have a bargain on offer in their article on page 43, £1 for Lifetime membership!!! I had to read it twice to make sure I had seen it correctly - the potential discounts on home insurance alone make this worth a few moments of anyone’s time, well done to them.

Saltdean Scribblers

Local authors book launch Our local group of writers the Saltdean Scribblers have just published “Scribblers’ Journey: An Anthology.” As our local author Domenica de Rosa has commented in the forward, ‘I’ve never met a group of writers like the Saltdean Scribblers’ as she is ‘impressed by their sheer facility with words’ and their ‘generosity’. Any anthology from this group will be varied and challenging at times, sometimes funny but above all a good read. The following provided by Marian Phillips describes the origins of the Scribblers and the background to their newly published anthology. SALTDEAN SCRIBBLERS Once upon a time, at an open day at Saltdean Community Centre, Dawn, the librarian said wistfully, “What I’d really like is a writers’ group here…..” “Oh, so would I!” I replied. And so that is how, three years ago, Saltdean Scribblers was born. We are a disparate group of would-be writers of all ages, backgrounds and talents, who meet once a fortnight, thanks to Saltdean Library, to discuss and critique our efforts. We’ve organised several successful open evenings to include the local community, where we’ve read some of our poetry, prose, stories and scripts. Two years ago, we printed a small collection of work called “It Was A Dark And Stormy Night”. “Scribblers’ Journey” is our second anthology. We remain a well-rounded group of writers, a reflection perhaps of the diverse local community that is Saltdean today. We offer positive criticism of

each other’s efforts and occasional shortcomings! But are always encouraging and friendly. And friendly is the operative word. The anthology is now available. It is a great read so I hope you will be lucky enough to get a copy. However, please do contact Saltdean Community Library for the latest information on availability. On December 6 2012 the ‘Scribblers’ Journey: An anthology’ was launched at the Saltdean Community Library. There were readings from the anthology, with music and an open microphone. Local people read out their creative work along with members of the Scribblers. It was a special evening for the Scribblers and the people of Saltdean - a journey for us all. Artist of the month

PHILIP SUGG From artist to puppeteer: Work in progress! My wife Bonni and I moved down from London to Rottingdean a year ago, I had had a varied but interesting career, working in museums and gallery education as teacher, artist, film maker and producer of audio visual displays of all sorts. I had intended to become an actor , thought better of it, and took my degrees instead as an art historian and fine artist at Nottingham University. Then I went back to Bristol Drama department (my original destination) and learned how to make films and animation. The main part of my work had been done at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, so I loved the idea of moving closer to the sea and to the variety of landscape here, because drawing landscape and cityscape on the spot underpins many of my projects. I had hoped too, that that there might be other artists interested one of my long-standing obsessions. From the earliest age, I had made puppets and miniature theatres based on Regency plays now associated with the name of Pollock. Often ,I’d been able to use this interest for exhibitions, including one at Greenwich. But I did want to create my own productions and fine other likeminded people to help. Rottingdean has proved the ideal place . I have teamed up with artist Amanda Davidson to develop new shows . Our immediate aim is to develop a unique Rottingdean Smugglers puppet show, hopefully involving other local creative people. Just before Christmas, the Grange put on an exhibition of work by myself, Amanda and Mick Bensley Here I could show the largest theatre I’ve made, (with characters I performed at the Brunswick Festival last summer) and a miniature Theatre sample of how a scene from the Smugglers Play might look. We hope this will develop next year if we get the help and funding we need! So if anyone reads this and is interested , get

in touch with us by asking at the Grange, or the Whiteways Centre or by Facebook. Contact: Phone, 01273 530714 EMAIL hubbub5uk @yahoo.com

Local history Part 10

Local History - Part 10 The Ocean Hotel, Saltdean Mike Laslett

This Art Deco gem featured in the 1993 Hercule Poirot episode: “Jewel Robbery at the Grand Metropolitan.” The hotel was designed by R H Jones for the Saltdean Estate. He was also architect of the Lido and the seafront flats: Marine View, Curzon House and Teynham House. The Hotel opened in 1938 with 344 bedrooms and a dining hall seating 300. The main block housed 130 rooms while others were in rear blocks which could be closed during winter.

Plans for a reception centre for asylum seekers were proposed without success. So between 2005 and 2010 it was redeveloped as Grand Ocean apartments, comprising almost 300 flats and 2 doctors’ surgeries.

However as early as December 1939 the hotel was requisitioned for war purposes; first for the ATS, then from 1941 as a National Fire Services Training College.

Do you have any memories of the Hotel you would like to share with readers? Please e-mail me at mikelaslett@ntlworld.com

Post-war the hotel was on the market for £500,000. It was reopened in 1953 by Billy Butlin, who paid only £250,000. He always got a bargain! It soon became a honeymooners’ favourite with Redcoat entertainment, ballroom dancing and an open pool air which was later enclosed. Redcoats who worked at the Ocean Hotel included Des O`Connor and Jimmy Tarbuck. Jimmy Noon is another name worthy of mention. Jimmy was resident organist at the Ocean Hotel for almost forty years. He was considered a true gentleman and a very talented musician, with an extensive repertoire. When he died in 2004 he was buried in Rottingdean churchyard. The simple inscription on his gravestone reads ‘Jimmy Noon Musician 1915 – 2004 Remembered with Love’. In 1999 the hotel was sold to the Grand Hotel group but the heyday could never be revived.

Business introduction - Angel Computers

19 19

Angel Computers Introduction to a local business Hi, with a long standing history in IT (over 20 years), I was made redundant from American Express, and chose to follow a career path that was of personal interest to me. Hence Angel Computers was born! I know there are many computer repair services out there, I have no intention of just adding to the numbers, I intend to offer something more! Personally I find it so frustrating when you go in a shop and they look down their nose at you, making the assumption that you know nothing, and in reality they probably know little more than what the product does and how much it costs. I offer what a customer deserves, a personal service, tailored to your needs, where I listen to what you want, and actually give it to you! For example a customer the other day identified that their network port didn’t work on their laptop, I could have just fixed it and charged for the fix. However in identifying the needs of the customer correctly, it became clear that this was the

symptom, not the real issue, if the wireless network in the house covered the full range of the house, he would rather use wireless as there are no cables, and why would you tether a laptop, doesn’t that defeat the idea of a laptop? I don’t do things without asking first, so if your PC/Laptop comes to me and there is something else required, or an opportunity is there to improve the performance, I will call you and make sure you are happy, I won’t just fit it and charge you for the extra when it is returned to you, giving you the peace of mind that I care as much as you do about your PC/Laptop. Anyway, I have an advert, here, in The Deans Magazine, and you can see there is not much I cannot do, from simple upgrades to web page design, from individual to medium size businesses, so feel free to get in touch. Pilates Instructor - Jan Davies

Jan Davies, Movement and Health Hello and Happy New Year to all readers! Have you, or someone you know got a back problem which you’ve been meaning to do something about? Do you intend to get more exercise, become more flexible and mobile? Then the doubts about your level of fitness, your weight, will you be good enough? What age will everyone else be? and so on …..well I can help you will all these issues by giving you a very gentle hands on therapy called the Bowen Technique to help your body re-balance, realign and release and prepare for the healing process and deal with all kinds of issues in the body to include back problems. I can also introduce you to Body Control Pilates mat work classes locally where you will receive plenty of personal attention from me with a maximum off 12 people per class, in a structured course designed for your needs. You will be taught to understand your body and build up your core strength, and improve your joint health and mobility and your general body health and flexibility. There is no competitive element at all, all levels of fitness and all ages are welcome. I’ve been teaching since 2001 and have a very broad range of business and health issues from my own experiences and therefore I can understand and share these with you and help you on your own journey of better fitness and health.

I was first introduced to pilates by my physiotherapist in 1999 as part of my rehab from a range of health problems to include a chronic back problem and I was so impressed with it after a couple of terms that I decided to train to be a teacher and I’ve never looked back. It’s how I manage my own back problems now. So don’t wait until it gets worse …..come and see me, call me or text me and we can start to work out the best way forward for you. I sincerely hope that I get to meet you soon and I can teach and treat you too! All you need to do is contact me on 07904 187257 for an initial chat, email me on jan@movementandhealth.co.uk and look at my website www.movementandhealth.co.uk . I also use facebook and have a business movementandhealth page, linked in and twitter.

Today’s lifestyles invariably involve excess amounts of time sitting using a computer, watching the TV and driving and many other limited body movement activities. The current cold weather invariably makes all these problems worse via even more tension stored in the muscles, stress and ongoing limited movement patterns. These issues are causing more people to have problems at all ages with lack of mobility and issues of pain like back problems. Using therapies like Bowen Technique to help the process and then following this up with good movement practices in pilates classes is the best way to take charge of your body problems and manage them yourself.

Successful Letting

Successful Renting 17 with Denise Whittington of Lets Go

Silver Service or Fast Food? Theories, models, jargon, stuck in a rut, can’t see the wood for the trees-why not? Bombarded with information on what we should do, how we should do it, what other people do, what could happen if we don’t do it, tales of gloom and doom…., can’t decide what to do for the best, where to start, where to go from here…… I don’t worry about all those things, or rather I make an effort not to! I listen to other people’s opinions but I like to find out for myself, and I have my own way of doing things…… One of the things I tend to do is go back to the same tingdean, Brighton, ‘phone 01273 236547 or email clothes shop or restaurant time and time again, because to: denise@letsgoproperty.co.uk. they offer an experience that is great. Lets Go covers all of the Deans area as well as Brighton & Hove & along the coast to Hastings. My idea of good service is that the staff are approachable, friendly, not pushy, or judgemental; not expecting Denise Whittington (B.A) is Director of Lets Go Letme to spend lots of money if I don’t want to (although I tings & Property management specialists, estabmay do so in the end!); happy to serve me a coffee and lished in 1997. She has lived and worked in the local area for many years. See Denise’s profile on toast, and not try to persuade me to have a full English breakfast when I don’t want one ; not to persuade me I LinkedIn. look good in a jacket that I can see doesn’t do anything Copyright: Lets Go December 2012 for me at all. They offer options and alternatives , they tell me what goes into the making of the clothes or meal-the ingredients if you like. They are experienced .They make me feel special, they consider my needs, what I like, they find out about me and provide things that suit me as an individual. Their attention is in the detail. If for any reason the experience becomes not so great I will talk to the staff about it and see if there is a way to get back to the good time. Something may have happened that is a temporary ‘blip’ and I will be happy in the knowledge that things will be returning to ‘normal’ . At Lets Go we aim to provide the type of service we like to receive ourselves.: we specialise in doing a good job, and looking after our customers. And working to high standards doesn’t have to be expensive: accepting lower standards can turn out to be more costly in the long run. It can be the difference between a series of ‘quick fixes’ and a more satisfactory solution. Attention to detail pays off-thorough preparation helps to produce a better result. And being specialists in lettings means we concentrate on what we are good at. If you would like to find out more about our range of lettings services visit Lets Go at 59 High Street, Rot-

Lido Event - review

Rat Pack night at the Lido review 30th November & 1st December Saltdean Community Centre hosted two nights of big band swing with Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Marilyn Monroe tributes The publicity poster billed it as “ an evening of music eating out of her hand. Someone near me was crying with ,laughter and hard liquor!” and this marvellous show did laughter. It has to be said that a lot of her humour is adult exactly what it said on the tin. The rumour is that the show will Come Fly With Me . The program notes indicated Neil return next year. If you missed it this time , that is Gordon has portrayed ‘ol’ blue eyes’ around the world and unfortunate. To miss it a second time would be just plain on the West End stage and it’s not hard to see why. With silly. the look, voice and cool gravitas of Sinatra in his mid forties Gordon is clearly the consummate professional , easing the audience nicely into the feel of the night. It wasn’t long before “ Deano” (Chris Madison) took to the mic . With the tall, dark Italian looks and ever so slightly pickled demeanour , the drinking and women gags came thick and fast. However the biggest laugh of the night was a gag at the expense of Saltdean beach! Madison’s deep, smooth baritone singing voice sat perfectly with crowd pleasers such as Sway, That’s Amore and Everybody Loves Somebody Sometime. Marilyn (Laura Nixon) was next up, tottering onto the stage all “lips and hips” with a physical similarity that was almost unnerving . Within seconds she had the audience

Health & nutrition advice

Bridgeford’s Best Bites:

Kickstarting healthy eating resolutions The media suggests that Christmas is a happy, peaceful time spent with loving families, though in reality there can be added stresses and strains with excesses of food, alcohol and television as well as limited routine, exercise and healthy food. 1 January brings a new impulse with resolutions to clean up, sober up, shape up and lose weight. For resolutions to stand the test of time, the basis of them needs to be sound. Denial Doesn't Work The brain (and subconscious) has no sense of humour and does not understand words like "NOT" and "DON'T". "I must NOT eat chocolate" becomes a mantra of "I must eat chocolate". Sound familiar? Be aware of what you say repeatedly to yourself and others. Make Positive Choices - Add Good Things It is generally easier to add something rather than exclude something from your diet. Rather than just focusing on avoiding, e.g. sweets or puddings, rather focus on eating a healthier diet and your body will not crave so much of the "bad" stuff. "Metabolic Programming" is when your body gets used to eating healthier food and develops a preference for that; sadly the more junk you eat the more junk you crave. Start With A Decision And Make Specific Choices The first step is to make a decision to improve your health. Then choose something simple and specific that you can manage to implement, maintain and measure, e.g. · Drink a glass of water on rising / half hour before meals / with coffee / alternately with alcohol · Add green leafy vegetables to stew or pasta in the last minutes of cooking

· Substitute one of your less healthy foods with a healthier choice, e.g. o boiled potatoes instead of chips o poach, steam, grill rather than fry o overripe bananas are sugar, almost ripe are carbohydrate o fruit instead of sugary puddings · Increase your fruit and vegetable intake one piece at a time, to at least 5 a day according to 1970's figures, more if you want optimum health · Regularly eat a vegetable that you have not tried before Be Gentle with Yourself - Be Realistic Falling off the healthier eating wagon is not a reason to give up. Give yourself a day off occasionally, then get back to it. Observe and Change Your Habits - Be Honest With Yourself Keep making positive decisions and healthier choices all year. Take control of your own health and stack the odds of good health in your favour. Many serious illnesses can brew for years before being felt or diagnosed. NOW is the time for prevention and aiming to be around to enjoy your life and families.
