Welcome
Welcome to the June Edition… We have a somewhat different cover this month, in case you don’t recognise them these are the new sculptures outside of the Ocean Hotel development in Saltdean. Thanks as always to Lynette for the picture. There have been a number of people either writing or phoning up recently to say how useful they find The Deans Magazine, so I wanted to take the time to say thank you to them, this is important feedback and lets me know that we are mostly on the right track. Have a great month especially now there are signs that summer is on its way.

Rottingdean Artist of the Spring month Music Festival
George Antoni George Antoni is a local artist who recently had a solo exhibition at The Grange Art Gallery in Rottingdean. His work has also been on show at various venues in Brighton and he is one of the talented and diverse group of artists at The Chalk Gallery in Lewes. George lives and works in Saltdean but was born and raised in East London. His passion for art goes back to childhood and he developed an interest for the experimental and abstract at an early age. When finishing school he studied art at West Ham College with the intention of going to Art School. He also had a passion for drama and when offered a place at East Fifteen Acting School, he took it. His career as an actor spans thirty years in film, TV and theatre. For a number of years he worked in black and white wet photography, and it was only when George moved to Saltdean that he re-immersed himself in painting, taking inspiration from the expansive sky, weather beaten coastline and ever changing seascapes.
When it comes to painting, George is playing with the balance of chance and control, chaos and order. He rarely knows where a painting comes from, and doesn’t really want to know. He wants it to end with the idea rather than start with it. He likes people to see different things in the finished painting, as George says “all interpretations are valid and every impression is true”. George’s work can currently be seen at The Chalk Gallery in Lewes, and online at www.georgeantoni.net. He is also happy to arrange for interested individuals to see his work privately and can be contacted by email at monza@macace.net.
His interest remains in the abstract, inspired by such artists as Mark Rothko. George’s paintings aim to evoke rather than depict. Starting with a loose intention, paint is layered and distressed in an effort to emulate the way the elements corrode and thereby create our surroundings. Each piece evolves through numerous generations until it takes on a life of it’s own.

Computer tips from Dolphin Computer Upgrades Computer Tips & Advice 45
Top Ten bad tech habits From crumbs in the works to bad posture at your desk, Dolphin Computers look at the worst habits we are surely all guilty of occasionally. Snacking: having lunch at your desk, or a coffee whilst you check in can’t do any harm, right? Except….a crumb or two under your keyboard, or a spilt beverage could spell disaster. Googling: we’re not saying don’t ever use a search engine, but if you are accessing a password sensitive site type the URL into the web address bar rather than searching for it on Google. Naked: not you – your devices! All of you portable tech should have a protective case. If you’ve bothered to splash out on an expensive phone/tablet/laptop give it the protection it deserves. Repetition: if you use the same password to access all password sensitive sites you may as well use none. Once in a hacker can access everything. Slumped: think about your posture and take regular breaks when using your technology, otherwise it could seriously affect your health.
Backup: there is no excuse, with automated, fully encrypted backup solutions for less than 60p a week you can protect everything you have on your devices. Tantastic: leaving your devices in the sun could toll the death knell, so be careful when you leave the room to think about whether a miracle will occur and the sun will shine today. Staying In: it’s your computer so you don’t need to bother logging out of Facebook and logging back in every time you want to check in do you? Yes you do. And every other single password sensitive site. Charge: it is as important to treat your battery with as much respect as you treat your mobile device. After all, if it has no power it’s not “fit for purpose”. Exposed: leaving your equipment on show, even in a back pocket, can prove too tempting for some light fingered thieves. Breaking your bad habits could save you a whole lot of cash!

Pregnancy is such a special time in any woman’s life, but to create space, relaxation, calm and balance throughout it can also be a time of great uncertainty and stress. I vowed somewhere along the A259 that I would create a class which caters for women between the two main yoga hubs of Eastbourne and Brighton that can be more easily accessed by those in-between. What are the main benefits of doing yoga during pregnancy and can you do it if you have never done yoga before? Beginners are welcome, in fact it’s a great time to start! The classes tend to be flowing and very nurturing, and provide all if not more of the following benefits.

Local history
Local History - Part 15
Rudyard Kipling at the Elms Mike Laslett
Mr Kipling’s Cakes are famous but they have only been around since 1967. However the famous author whose name suggests the cakes’ traditional English quality was born in Bombay in 1865, almost one hundred years before. He travelled to America where he wrote The Jungle Book as short stories. Their strong moral message provided motivational material for Baden Powell in the early days of Scouting. A quarrel with Rudyard's brother-in-law while in America drove Kipling back to England in 1896.
Oak Leaf Cafe Photo credit correction In the May edition of the Local History feature we included an archive photograph of the Oak Leaf Cafe. The photo credit on this should have been for Douglas d,Enno, and we would like to apologise to him for this omission.
His mother was one of the four MacDonald sisters. His aunt, Georgiana MacDonald, married the painter Sir Edward BurneJones. They lived at North End House on the west side of The Green. This explains Kipling’s arrival at Rottingdean in the Spring of 1897 to stay with the Burne-Jones family for six months. His cousin Stanley Baldwin married Lucy Risdale whose family owned The Dene on the south side of The Green. So, surrounded by family, he chose to remain in Rottingdean, renting the Elms on the north side of The Green. By then Kipling had come to be regarded as the People's Laureate and the poet of Empire. He produced some of his most memorable poems and stories in Rottingdean, including Kim, Stalky & Co, the Just So Stories and the poem Recessional.
The Elms today
He was such a celebrity that sightseers would peer into his home and his garden from the tops of buses. With the growing lack of privacy and the death of his eldest child, Kipling reluctantly moved to the seclusion of Bateman’s house at Burwash in 1902. The Elm's large garden, surrounded by a listed flint wall, was thankfully saved from development and is now open to the public. The Grange in Rottingdean has a Kipling Room, with a reconstruction of his study in The Elms and exhibits devoted to his work. The Grange is open daily, admission free.

Nicola Price - Breathing technique
How aware of your breath are you? Nicola Price is a qualified Transformational Breath Facilitator and lives in Rottingdean. Here she tells us why correct breathing technique is so important. Our breath is the only process that works unconsciously, but we also have conscious control too. Our breathing is affected by our emotions. Think back: what happens to your breath when you receive sad news as opposed to when you are happy? If sad news, it’s likely that the breath will not be flowing so easily, but in gasps with gaps of no breath. Breathing and emotions Some actors, when they find it difficult acting an emotional part, match the breath pattern that they have learned goes with a particular emotion. Notice your unique way of breathing and what happens to your breath in different situations and when feeling different emotions. There is much good work that has been done on the study of mindfulness and its benefits. Being mindful of your breath is revealing and rewarding. Breathing facts Research tells us that most people use up to a mere 25% of their breath capacity. In my work as a Breath Facilitator I see
people typically using only a part of their respiratory system, either their belly or upper chest. ‘Transformational Breath’ helps teach people how to breathe with more of their capacity – their belly and chest. 80% of our energy is received though breathing and 70% of detoxification occurs though the breath ... a good reason to breathe well! Difficulty sleeping? I was amazed to find in explorations of my own breath that when I am unable to sleep at night, mind racing, if I consciously match my sleeping breath pattern (well, what I think that might be, or match my sleeping partner’s breath) I am asleep in a twinkling. If you have insomnia, try it. Wouldn't it be wonderful to be able to have control of your sleep too!? Join in here! Please share your mindful breath discoveries or find out more at www.breathingbrighton.com

Health & nutrition advice
Bridgeford’s Best Bites:
Apple Cider Vinegar APPLE CIDER VINEGAR (ACV) ACV is a natural product made by crushing apples and squeezing out the liquid. Bacteria and yeast are added to the liquid to start the alcoholic fermentation process, and the sugars are turned into alcohol (cider). In a second fermentation process, the alcohol is converted into vinegar by acetic acid-forming bacteria. Acetic acid and malic acid give vinegar its sour taste. ACV is used in salad dressings, vinaigrettes, marinades, food preservatives, and chutneys, amongst other things. Centuries Old Remedies Although there is very little science to support the benefits of ACV, people have been using it and swearing by its benefits for centuries: ● A hair rinse for increased body, smoothness and shine, for easing dandruff and itchy scalp ● A skin toner to regulate pH, reduce blemishes or left on overnight to fade age spots or acne scars ● A natural aftershave ● For warts, put a soaked cotton ball on overnight for a few nights ● Rub on teeth then rinse with water to remove stains ● To ease sunburn soak in a bath with a cup of ACV ● Rub on hands and feet to relieve tired hands and feet ● To aid weight loss ● Helps to balance the entire body system and maintain a healthy pH, creating an overall detoxification, helping to stimulate cardiovascular circulation and detoxify the liver; reduce heartburn (except in ulcers!) ● Helps to break up mucous and cleanse the lymph nodes, easing sinus congestion and related allergies, headaches and sore throats ● Its natural enzymes help combat Candida and its symptoms of fatigue, poor memory, sugar cravings ● As a fleas repellant on pets ● As a household cleaner for toilets, microwaves, surfaces, windows What Studies Show Studies on malic acid supplements have shown benefits for skin pigmentation, energy and sports performance and fibromyalgia patients. These were not studies on ACV, though it does contain malic acid.
Cholesterol and Diabetes ● ACV improved the serum lipid profile in normal and diabetic rats by decreasing serum triglycerides (TG) LDL and increasing serum HDL and may be of great value in managing the diabetic complications. ● In healthy people ACV delays gastric emptying and lowers blood glucose and insulin levels. In people with insulin-dependent diabetes, this may be a disadvantage regarding their glycaemic control. Weight ● A specific concentration of ACV induced a reduction in weight gain in animals treated, whereas other concentrations did not. Cautions ACV should always be diluted and taken in small doses as with any vinegar. Pure and also high doses of ACV can damage tooth enamel, tissues and organs. People with diabetes and osteoporosis need to check with their doctor before taking ACV. More studies and on humans are needed to establish health benefits of ACV. We are happy to advise you on your health matters. Neighbourhood Watch
Unwanted and unsolicited mail, marketing and telephone calls I am sure we all have all been victims of this annoying practice and deal with them in different ways. Marketing phone calls, unsolicited letters and email are legitimate marketing practices for many companies. However, silent phone calls and ‘junk’ mail can be misleading, a nuisance and distressing. They can also be attempts to commit fraud against you or obtain your banking or other details for ID fraud. Silent phone calls often happen when a computer has dialled several phone numbers. Only the first person to answer is spoken to and the remainder get a ‘silent call’. Often the call will be a competition or offer but it may be a message to call a premium rate number. Some helpful advice: Never disclose security information to people that have called you. Take their details and ring them back on the number that you have for them, shown on your bill or card. Unsolicited mail should be treated with caution and never reply to something that you believe or suspect to be a fraud. Contact genuine organisations and ask to be removed from their mailing lists. When filling out a form, find out how the information is used. Consider opting out.
The Direct Marketing Association (DMA) is the largest trade association for the marketing and communications sector. Their preference services block unwanted mail, telephone calls and faxes. ● Register for the Telephone Preference Service online, or call 0800 398893. ● The Fax Preference Service is on 020 7291 3330 ● Register for the Mail Preference Service online, or call 0207 2913300. ● The Royal Mail delivers letters addressed to ‘the occupier’. These can be opted out of by emailing optout@royalmail.com or phoning 08457 950950. Rottingdean Dog MassageCamera Club
Sarahs’ story Or how a grumpy dog turned back into a Diva dog who loves massage We have two collie/spaniel dogs – brother and sister, Sam and Sarah. We were warned that they would develop obsessive behaviour so knew what to expect. As it happened they developed different obsessions… Sam soon discovered seagulls – which is fortunate as we live right by the beach and sea. His goal in life is to chase each and every seagull in Sussex, barking at the top of his voice. Why? We have never figured that out. He hasn’t a hope of catching them unless he develops wings. But the smile on his face as he runs, weaving up and down the beach, in and out of the sea is enough reason (and pleasure) for us. Sarah is not so fussed with seagulls – she discovered the delights of tennis balls. Being a good Dad (or so I thought at the time) I used to encourage her obsession by carrying a ball in every pocket and constantly giving in to her demands of ‘Throw it Dad…now”. They are only 6 years old but at the start of the year we noticed that Sarah was beginning to stiffen as she got up or walked up stairs after a heavy ball playing session. I’m a qualified masseur so automatically used to rub her down after such a session but didn’t really know what I was doing dog-wise (dogs are different from humans….they have more legs and muscles are in different places!). We attended an Introduction to Canine Massage workshop and took along Sam and Sarah for practice. Although they are siblings they are surprisingly different. Sam is a ‘normal dog’ – you can pick up his skin, it is loose. He has soft fur. Sarah was quite abnormal. Her skin was like it was superglued to her. It wouldn’t pick up. And her fur was like rubbing a loo brush. This was a classic case of the good Dad being a bad Dad and causing unknown injury by constantly throwing the ball. Because her exercise was largely jumping (rather than Sam’s weaving and running) she had developed what would be called a stiff neck and back in human-terms – a VERY stiff back. Because her skin was so adhered, her fur was suffering as well and was becoming coarse and loo brush-like. We were shown a few simple techniques to use on her – skin rolling and lifting the adhered skin to allow fresh nutrients to circulate – plus some other basic techniques. Sarah loved them and instead of having to chase her around, began to demand a massage…daily, hourly, all the time. Yes, she developed a new obsession – but a healthy one this time. After just one week we noticed the difference in her skin – it was getting easy to lift. After a month it was not just her skin and fur but her personality which had changed. She was now back to the bright
eyed, happy, loving dog we started out with and not the grumpy tired dog she had become. This change was not only visible to us but others as well. The groomer and dog walker both asked what we had done with the ‘old’ Sarah as this ‘new’ model seemed so much better. The groomer in particular said that when she used to cut Sarah’s fur it was like sandpaper but is now like running a hot knife through butter. Several months later and we definitely have our girl back. She drives her brother mad by constantly chasing him. She sleeps with both eyes closed in a total relaxed state. She still gets a ball – but on my terms and for limited times only. The bad Dad has learned to be a good Dad. And all this through canine massage. OK…we now have a Massage Diva but we can live with that. This is what convinced me to train as a professional in canine massage and qualify myself as a practitioner. Hopefully my skills can now be put to use on more dogs and give the same new quality of life our Sarah has. If you are interested please check out my AchyPaw website (http://achypaw.com) or give me a call (07544 844120) Dr Les Ellam

South Coast Taxis sponsorship bowls over local cricket club Rottingdean Cricket Club players have been bowled over with their new shirts – thanks to sponsorship from local taxi firm South Coast Taxis. South Coast Taxis, part of Brighton & Hove City Cabs, provided the adult and junior teams with their shirts for the 2013 season for the first time. Nicky Stone, manager of South Coast Taxis, said: “We were delighted to help out and be part of this fantastic, long established club that plays such a valuable role in the local sporting community. “ Nicky met Mark Smith, Secretary of Rottingdean Cricket Club, and the under 12s and under 13s players, coached by Sussex County Cricket Club coach Dan Westcott, at a training session.
Mark said: “It’s great to start a new season with brand new shirts. A big thank you to South Coast Taxis – we are very grateful for their support.” Rottingdean Cricket Club has three teams who play in the Saturday Sussex Cricket League, plus two Sunday teams, a mid week and 20-20 teams, in addition to its youth section. The club’s junior section The Raiders is run by the club’s Youth Development Director Barry Harper and now has more than 50 players from the ages of nine to 15. Any boys and girls who are interested in joining the club should email Barry Harper at Rottingdeancolts@gmail.com
