Welcome
Welcome to the March Edition… As I write this in Mid February it is gratifying to see that the rain has finally stopped and while it is not exactly warm outside the sun is shining. You never know perhaps we might have a nice Spring this year. This is another feature filled edition of the Deans Magazine, as usual we have have our regular contributors, plenty of of events, groups and even a Churchyard walk for you to try. The magazine is well supplied with local content so thanks to everyone who sends it in. Please remember to check out our website: www.deansmagazine.co.uk, whilst quite modest it does have nearly a year’s archive of magazines to view on screen so you can always find that elusive article or advert you know you saw somewhere. If the current month’s magazine does not appear straight away press F5 to refresh your browser screen. If it still doesn’t appear then it means I have forgotten to put it on there in which case a timely reminder is always welcome! Keith - Editor

Artist of the month
Dean Hannon My name is Dean Hannon and I have been living in Saltdean for nearly five years. I originally moved from Birmingham to broaden my horizon art wise. After studying graphic design in Solihull ,I went on to do fine art at Bourneville art college (a part of Birmingham university). I became well known for my graffiti work back there and felt my art was being wasted, (all i was asked to do was paint cliche mainstream cool images ). Originally I was an oil painter. It was what I loved - anything digital was a bit annoying to me, almost as though digital art was cheating. I really despised it. Then one day I decided to grab myself a digital tablet to draw with (after a lot of my friends advised) and I have never turned back. I was so pleased to realize that it was not not cheating and that I was robbing myself of a whole medium due to my snobbery. My personal influences vary from classical art through to commercial artists of today. My favourite artist is Caravaggio , who was active in the 16th and early 17th century. He was trained in the Baroque style of painting.
He was a master of emotional and technical prowess. Most of all I like his skill with values, showing light in a realistic and warm way. Salvador Dali is also an influence, his mad-cap dreamlike images and skilled painting truly stand the test of time. Also I like more modern commercial art, like that of Jim Lee who worked for both Marvel and DC comics. His line art was precise and his characters always had wispy lines to show movement, always reminding me of John Constable whose famous sea images show crashing waves, which give you the impression of nature’s terrifying power. My main personal joy comes from landscapes, and the Deans have many awesome artists who tap into seascapes, which blow my mind. At home for me my love was drawing and painting forests. Currently I work freelance creating images that range from painting portraits of children through to pets, and I also have worked on album covers, in night clubs live painting and I have created logos and branding for companies. If you would like to contact me my email is digiartdean@hotmail.co.uk

Local History - Part 12
Mike Laslett
A walk through Rottingdean Churchyard
This month local historian, Mike Laslett, takes us on a guided walk through Rottingdean Churchyard, revealing many surprises… We commence our tour by walking under the lych-gate. Approaching the church door, the grave on your right with a large cross is that of William Black, Scottish poet. On the church wall to your right are memorials to the artist Sir Edward Burne-Jones and his wife Georgiana. They lived on the opposite side of The Green at North End House. Behind you is a wooden grave board in memory of their granddaughter, the author Angela Thirkell. Following the path on your right towards the wall, you pass the headstone of John Norris on your left. Like many eighteenth century memorials it bears a carved skull & crossbones to represent the death of the body and an hourglass to represent time running out. At the wall, turn left towards the gap in the wall. The penultimate tablet before the gap recalls the artist D’Oyly John. Brought up in Durban, South Africa, little is known of the early life of this Rottingdean artist, who claimed to be the illegitimate son of Augustus John. He became a widely recognised painter after World War II with his idealised, sun-drenched views of the Mediterranean. Pass through the gap in the wall and down the steps into the next section of the churchyard. Look along the middle line of graves on your right. The fourth headstone depicts stage curtains drawn back, with the inscription “The last curtain call for George Elliott, the Chocolate Coloured Coon.” His music hall act would not be considered politically correct today since he blacked his face and dressed all in white. His most popular songs were “Lily of Laguna” and "I Used to Sigh for the Silvery Moon". He retired to a cottage in Rottingdean which he named "Silvery Moon" after the song.
singer Bob Copper and several generations of his family, famous for their unaccompanied folk singing. Counting a further twelve tablets to your left you will find a memorial to Princess Despina Karadj, a member of the Swedish royal family and poet. Immediately behind you at this point is a headstone with a carving of the ship Eurydice which records four sailors washed up at Rottingdean when their ship sunk off the Isle of Wight in 1878 with a loss of 364 lives. Retrace your steps south towards the path that runs through the churchyard. Turn left, walk to the end of the path, then continue to the wall ahead. A simple wooden cross surrounded by tributes marks the grave of Gary Moore (1952 -2011) of the Irish rock band "Thin Lizzy.” To your left, against the same wall, a black headstone marks the burial of local councillor Nimrod Ping : “Architect, musician and troublemaker, arrived late, left too early.” Turn around to face the Windmill. Immediately in front of you is the large box tomb inscribed Donald Corrie on the end facing you. This is the tomb of William Brown of Challoners who died in 1945. In front of this lie the grey slabs of the family vault of Sir Roderick Jones, chairman of Reuters, and his wife Enid Bagnold, who wrote “National Velvet” and “The Chalk Garden,” while living at North End House in the village.
Buried next to Elliott are Lal Cliff, another coon singer, and her husband, the music hall artist, Harry Bamford. Their inscription reads: "All the world is a stage and I one of its players.” Go back up the steps and across the grass towards the church tower. Immediately ahead of you is the box tomb of Thomas Beard of Challoners who died in 1728. Now walk east, towards the trees at the rear of the church, then turn left along the wall. The fifth tablet celebrates folk

The Grange Art Gallery & Museum needs your help! Celebrating the golden era of British film making in Sussex Were you working in the British film industry during the 1940's, 50's, 60's and 70's? Were you an actor or extra in feature films shot in Brighton and the surrounding area during those times? Particularly films such as The Chalk Garden, the bigscreen adaption of stage play by Enid Bagnold, partly filmed in the Deans (1964); Genevieve, the classic story of love and rivalry during the London to Brighton Veteran Car Rally (1953); The Adventures of Jane, partly filmed in Rottingdean (1949); Brighton Rock (1947); One Good Turn, a Norman Wisdom comedy (1955); Half A Sixpence, the Tommy Steele film musical (1967); Oh! What A Lovely War, filmed largely on Brighton's West Pier (1969); On a Clear Day You Can See Forever, the Barbra Streisand film musical, partly filmed at the Royal Pavilion (1970) and the Carry On films. Perhaps you knew some of the popular British film stars of the day who made the Sussex Coast their home, such as Dame Anna Neagle, Sir Laurance Olivier, Vivien Leigh, Dora Bryan, Dame Flora Robson, Max Miller and Brenda de Banzie. Let Them Entertain You - Part 4
The Wedding Disco Whether it is a traditional wedding or civil partnership, a pre-requisite at most celebrations is always music. But with so many live musical options available, why does the wedding disco remain so popular? Saltdean entertainment agency First & Foremost Entertainment Ltd explains why, and provides useful hints and tips for booking the perfect wedding or event disco. Today, options for music at weddings are many and varied. An organist at the church, a harpist for your drinks reception, a pianist or jazz trio during the wedding breakfast, or a live band at the wedding reception itself. However, the one form of musical entertainment that we supply more than any is the professional wedding disco. The reason: A professional DJ can create a specific ambiance at your celebration, in keeping with your wishes, and play as wide and diverse a range of music as the demographic of your guests. In other words, they can provide something for everyone, so no one feels excluded. This includes requests, and playing that very special and meaningful song for the happy couple’s “first dance”. The art of the DJ is a skill like any other, acquired and honed over many years, using top quality lighting and sound equipment, and an innate musicality that maintains momentum throughout the evening, keeping the party buzzing and the dance floor filled. In reality a good professional disco is worth its weight in gold, offering around 5 hours of continuous entertainment for all of your guests. So how do you know which one to choose? Our Top Tips: 1. Prices vary greatly, as does professionalism and quality; so ultimately, you will get what you pay for. Remember your disco will entertain your guests for up to five hours, so be realistic with the budget. 2. A professional DJ must carry Public Liability Insurance & PAT Test Certification. Venues insist upon it, so if your proposed DJ doesn’t have these, don’t book.
3. Check that your DJ offers a free consultation prior to your wedding to discuss music options. 4. Check how often your DJ updates their catalogue of tracks and ask if they take requests on the night. The First & Foremost Disco is our own in-house wedding and event disco company which complies with and ticks all of the above boxes. If you would like a no obligation quote for your wedding, civil ceremony or forthcoming event, or you require further free advice, please contact us as follows: Call Free: 0800 2707 567 Mobile: 07505 56 56 35 Web: www.FirstAndForemostDisco.com Email: info@FirstAndForemostEntertainment.com © First & Foremost Entertainment Ltd 2013

Morning Meditation at the Open Art Café 6 Nevill Road Rottingdean BN2 7HG Meditation is a practise which trains the hyperactive human mind to focus on one ‘thing’ thus taking a break from constant activity. By focusing all our brain power on the breath or on a mantra or on the present moment, we give a chance to our minds to be still. The more we practise to focus on the moment during meditation, the easier it becomes to connect to our inner stillness in our daily lives. I often compare the meditative state to ‘the eye of the storm’ (a region of calm weather right in the middle of a storm). Meditation trains us to find our peaceful centre at any time, right in the middle of everyday life’s turmoil. Aimee Harman owner of the Open Art Café is a great believer on the value of meditation for the development of our spiritual journey, so when I asked her if we could use her Open Art Café in Rottingdean for a one hour morning meditation, before the café opens for trade, she immediately and enthusiastically agreed to this idea! Nearly a year later we have our meditation group, from 2-8 people, who come every
Tuesday and Thursday to practise together; each of them marvelling from its benefits and their positive transformation on the way they deal with life. It consists of 20 min Mindful Yoga (stretching) and 40 min focusing on the breath (sitting mediation). This structured routine prepares the physical body for stillness which supports the mind to also stay still. Sessions are lead by Theresa creative colour therapist and massage practitioner and by Helena NEA dance instructor. Cost £3/session Tuesday and Thursday 7.30-8.30am The Morning Meditation Practise is open to everybody, please come in and give it a try!

Health & nutrition advice
Bridgeford’s Best Bites:
Cinnamon Cinnamon is one of the oldest known spices. It was used in ancient Egypt as a spice and a medicine and has several references in the Bible. The healing components are oils in the bark of the cinnamon tree, available dried in a quill or ground into a powder. Ceylon cinnamon is considered the true cinnamon and has higher healing properties than the Chinese Cassia cinnamon, which may have health risks if consumed in regular large doses. Be sure to buy good quality organic cinnamon, available at health food stores, you will taste the difference. It is an excellent source of manganese and a good source of fibre and calcium, though virtually calorie free.
can moderate the glucose response in normal weight and obese adults, helping control blood sugar levels and reducing insulin resistance. It helps to increase reserve stores of glycogen in the liver.
Anti-Cancer Cinnamon has been shown to induce tumour cell death, making it a helpful addition in an anti-cancer regime. Anti-inflammatory, Anti-clotting, Arthritis During physical injury blood platelets clump together to stop bleeding in an emergency. If this happens under normal conditions it can inhibit blood flow and stimulate release of inflammatory arachidonic acid, which can be reduced by taking cinnamon, lessening inflammation and helping arthritis. Anti-microbial Cinnamon has been studied for its ability to stop fungi, including Candida and other yeasts. It is a good food preservative, killing food borne pathogens as well as adding flavour to soups and stews. Anti-oxidant Has powerful anti-oxidant properties. Alzheimer's Chronic inflammation plays a role in neuro-degenerative diseases like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's multiple sclerosis, brain tumour and meningitis. Cinnamon's anti- inflammatory properties can be helpful in protecting your nerves as well as boosting your brain function and memory. Cholesterol Half a teaspoon daily can help to reduce LDL (bad) cholesterol, reducing risk factors of cardiovascular disease. Diabetes, Glucose, Insulin Daily cinnamon can help people with type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance to respond better to insulin. It
IBS Cinnamon can be helpful for constipation related IBS. Hormones, Stress Cinnamon stimulates progesterone secretion in adrenal cells and may help menstrual pain and infertility. Weight control Anti-obesity due to its body fat lowering properties (see Cholesterol and Diabetes). Adding Cinnamon to your Diet (sprinkle on cereal, toast and honey, cakes, use in stews) ● Sprinkle on cereal and in smoothies ● Add to cakes, pastries, soups and stews ● Honey and cinnamon on toast of oatcakes makes a tasty snack with a hot beverage We are happy to advise you on your health matters. Neighbourhood Watch
Mass Market Fraud Commonly known as ‘Scams’, these Frauds target the unwary and arrive in the form of unsolicited e-mail, letters or telephone calls. They involve lotteries, prizes, awards, miracle cures, clairvoyants and other promises of good fortune. The recipient will reply, whether directly through telephone, by post or e-mail and will be invited to send money, often to assist in the administration of the release of the winnings. ● Big winnings do not exist. Occasionally items of little value will be sent as prizes. ● They are fraud and an attempt to elicit money from unsuspecting victims. ● As the winnings on offer are substantial, so too can are the advance fees required to release the funds. The cruel part of the scam is that suspects build up a rapport with victims to continue the flow of money. Who are the victims?
● The fraudsters will gain the confidence of the victim, hence where the elderly are most at risk. Communications are often sent to accommodation addresses. These are then collected by couriers or third parties and sent on to the fraudsters. ● Payments are made through cheques, credit / debit card transactions or through sending cash via money transfer services. ● Cheques can be cleared through international clearing services and the money will go through a series of further transactions before finally arriving in the pockets of the fraudsters.
● Anyone can be a victim.
What to do in the event of receiving an unsolicited communication:
● e-mails are sent to huge numbers of people and anyone can become a potential victim.
If you receive these communications do not reply to them. If you are a victim of this fraud, REPORT IT!
● Letters are more specific and in many cases the elderly are most at risk.
For more information about Neighbourhood Watch please contact Secretary Linda Hood telephone: 01273 306441 or email: nhw.sro-sec@hotmail.co.uk
● The victim may respond and after sending a fee to the fraudsters may have telephone contact.

Charity Event

Wine Tasting Charity Event Brighton business Barefoot Wine has joined forces with Brighton based charity Blind Veterans UK, to hold a fantastic wine tasting evening at a stunning Grade II listed, sea front hotel, in aid of the charity which helps vision impaired ex - Servicemen and women. For just £15 per person, guests will be given the chance to enjoy an array of fine wines, learn about the wine manufacturing process from Barefoot’s locally based UK Brand Ambassador, and network with other guests. A cheese supper to complement the wines on offer will also be served to all, as will a fabulous welcome cocktail named Moscato Spumante. As well as this, a light-hearted Wine Quiz will offer all the chance for a little friendly rivalry. A table for 10 can be reserved if guests want to bring their competitive colleagues along! During the evening there will also be a raffle to raise funds for Blind Veterans UK, and to win a day at Brighton Racecourse for 2 (subject to Terms and Conditions), and other tempting prizes. Alistair Feest, Barefoot’s UK Brand Ambassador, said: “Over the years, Barefoot has been part of thousands of community and charity events, and our popularity has grown along with our support of these groundbreaking organisations. Our wines have garnered numerous accolades and awards, but more importantly to us, we have a growing circle of loyal fans who love and enjoy our wine and who have joined us in the spirit of giving back to our communities and to our world. We are delighted to be supporting Blind Veterans UK, which provides fantastic support to blind ex-Servicemen and women in its nearby Ovingdean centre, at this wine tasting evening”. Body Talk -Peter Alexander
57
Exercise for older adults By Peter Alexander BSc Ost. Statistics show that adults over the age of 65 are the most sedentary group in the population, spending an average of 10 hours per day sitting or lying down. Not surprisingly, this lack of activity can lead to the development of many serious health problems. However, by starting a regular exercise regime the natural ageing process can be slowed down, lowering the risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and some cancers. Also, physical activity can have other benefits such as reducing depression, anxiety and the risk of getting dementia. Many active, older adults report that they have less aches, pains and stiffness in their joints. They are also less likely to have falls and be generally steadier on their feet. As confidence levels increase they are more likely to develop a wider social circle and have a healthier, happier life. Before beginning regular exercise it is advisable to consult a health professional to discuss whether you’ll need to modify your activity, taking in to account your general health, or any disabilities you may have. This is particularly important if you haven’t exercised for a while. It is vital to choose an activity you enjoy, as you will then be more likely to continue with it in the long term. If possible, include some kind of resistance training in your regime, as this will help to prevent
your bone density decreasing and keep your muscles strong. The local council produces an annual directory of sports, activities and classes, many for the over 50’s, which feature a wide range of different exercise options. Whatever sport you do, start slowly and build up activity levels gradually, in order to prevent soreness or injury. Always remember to warm up first and do some gentle stretching, and don’t forget to end slowly in order to cool down properly. Evidence indicates that by making exercise you enjoy part of your daily routine you’ll continue, and get fitter and healthier.
