Welcome
Welcome to the May Edition… Well done to everyone who spotted last month’s slight technical error (It was headed March 2013). I can only put this down to taking a phone call in the middle of setting up the magazine as changing the date is always the first thing I do each month, either that or old age is truly setting in! The only good news was that it was spotted in time to get the right date on the web edition: www.deansmagazine.co.uk Other than a couple of warm days in April, Spring or indeed early summer is definitely not in the air yet, and whilst we are all used to the foibles of the British weather, the cold spell does seem to have hung around for a particularly long time this year. Warm weather or otherwise though the 2013 season of outdoor events gets under way this month including the Lido Comedy Night right at the end of the May. By all accounts these events are not to be missed and benefit the Lido Community Interest Group too so do try to book your tickets before they all go. There are even more articles than usual this month, so plenty for you all to read, enjoy the magazine. Keith - Editor

Rottingdean Artist of the Spring month Music Festival
Glenn Fabry Hello my name is Glenn Fabry and Ive been living in Saltdean since 1993, with my wife Nikki and our teenage children. I’ve done a lot of different work in illustration over the years – book covers, album covers, TV and film work, video games, children’s book illustration and even a couple of tattoos, but my principal area of work has been as a comic book artist. Mostly for American companies, like DC entertainment ( that’s Batman and Superman for the uninitiated) and Marvel ( those guys do The Hulk Spiderman, The Avengers, the X-men etcetera) It’s a strange time for comics at the moment. Sales are way down. More money , by far, is made from movie adaptations than from the actual monthly comic books ( now called floppies) so although the public face of comics is now really high, the industry itself, paper and print, is just chugging along. Kids now like TV and computer games: mostly comic readers are adults now . What’s also happened is the rise of the graphic novel. A graphic novel is essentially a comic book in hardback; sometimes these are collections of the monthlies, sometimes they are just books done in the comic strip format, and sometimes, like Art Spieglemann’s “mans”, they gain international fame and respect. Neil Gaiman’s “endless nights” was the first graphic novel to top the New York Times’ best seller list ( I drew a chapter of that by the way!) I went to Art college in Richmond in 1977 on an illustration course and after leaving was unemployed for about a year, apart from doing caricatures and a comic strip for the punk group “ the Stranglers” fan club magazine In 1984 I did
my first work for 2000 AD, the only remaining British comic still on the shelves now in 2012 AD on a Celtic barbarian character called “Slaine”. All of this stuff is still in print from Titan books in collected volumes; I did that for about 8 years, in black and white. Then colour printing came in for 2000 AD and because I had learned how to paint at college I chiefly did covers for them. In 1992 I was hired by DC comics to paint covers for their” suggested for mature readers” character, John Constantine – Hellblazer ( made into the movie ‘Constantine’ starring Keanu Reeves) and then onto a book called ‘Preacher’ for which I painted 68 covers and won an ASNER award (comic books equivalent of an Oscar) Nearly all the work I do these days is suggested for mature readers. My latest book LOT 13 by Steve Niles and Glenn Fabry DC entertainment is out now! Glenn Fabry contact address : my agent Andy Brown Degaswater@yahoo.com

Just for the young un’s ? All this talk about Facebook and Twitter and You Tube. It's all young people seem to do these days isn’t it? Always head down, faces buried in their phones, ear phones plugged firmly in place, tap, tap tapping away furiously at their screens. Is modern life isolating us, making us all lonelier? Or can technology help bring people together? Social media, it's just for the kids. Right? You may have seen last month that Ralph Hoare, said to be Britain's oldest gardener, decided to share almost a century of experience with people on Twitter. He is 104. And he is not alone. The biggest demographic group signing up to Facebook is the over 50s. One of the most wonderful aspects of social media is not that it isolates people, rather that it can bring them together. If you are housebound, due to age, illness, or just the inclement British weather, it gives you the opportunity to interact with other people.
And whilst it is a fantastic way of keeping up with friends and relatives all over the world, it works equally as well keeping you in touch with people in your town, village, or even your street. There are now “micro" social networking sites designed solely for your own neighbourhood where you can keep in touch with those living closest to you. Social media just for the youth? Most definitely not! It really doesn't matter what your age, as long as you have access to the Internet social media can help you feel connected and stop you feeling alone. If you would like any more information on social media then please do get in touch, either through the “traditional” way of a phone call, or an email, or you will find us over on Twitter and Facebook as well as a few other online places.

from The Saltdean Lido Community Interest Company By the time you read this, our bid to run the entire lido site will have been delivered to Brighton & Hove Council. St Wulfran’s Church Ovingdean
25
St Wulfran’s Church - A hidden gem by Peter Wolfenden - Priest in charge If it were thirty miles away, you would hire a coach to visit it. But because St Wulfran’s Church is on the doorstep - within a ten minute drive of anyone reading this magazine - we either don’t think it worth a visit or, more sadly, don’t even know it exists. The oldest church and the oldest building in Brighton; a grade one listed structure built one thousand years ago; a wonder of entirely Sussex flint construction; a beautiful ceiling by Charles Kempe, now restored and seen in all its glory St Wulfran’s in Ovingdean is all these things and much more besides. Nestling in a peaceful graveyard against the downs and in sight of the sea, St Wulfran’s has a typically Sussex “Hat” tower containing the 15 century bell which is still rung every Sunday to summon the lively congregation to worship. The nave reveals indications of the many changes which have taken place since its first mention in the Domesday Book of 1086 and includes more windows from the Kempe studio. (The Kempes. like the Volks, lived in Ovingdean and you can find their graves nearby.) The rood screen was constructed for St Wullfran’s in Oberammergau and the interesting memorials on the walls include one for a former Lord Mayor of London.
Go through the Norman arch to see the Kempe ceiling and enter the Lady Chapel, constructed in 1907, where prayers and intercessions are regularly made. Look back to the tower and see the organ loft, added in 1983 when the new vestry was built. You can see all these things with the benefit of the new lighting, installed in 2012 and a newly written guide gives more detailed information.Indeed one of the remarkable things about St Wulfran’s is the way it is clearly a living building, with changes and developments to be seen all around. It is so much more than just an ancient monument. It is open every day from 10.00a.m. – 4.00p.m. for visits and for prayer. The main service each week is at 10.00a.m. every Sunday, but services are often held at other times as well. All are welcome to share the wonder of this sacred place and to marvel at the centuries of worship which give it its special sense of peace in the presence of God.

Local History - Part 14
Readers write & readers right! Mike Laslett
No new topic this month but a chance to share some memories and comments gratefully received from readers. Concerning The Ocean Hotel some holiday snaps were received from Brian Sellars who is pictured here on holiday with his parents in the early 1950’s. He writes that dining was an experience because tables were allocated for the whole week and shared with another family, so hopefully you got on well! It was usual to have your table’s picture taken then displayed for sale outside the hotel office. Later in life Brian moved to Saltdean and had part time schoolboy employment at Butlins, in catering, cleaning and portering Margaret Barden also remembers holidaying there in the fifties and particularly remembers the putting course and roller skating rink, both located on the rooftop!
Brian Sellars’ holiday pictures from the 1950’s
Moving on to my March article about Rottingdean Churchyard, which of course related to that adjoining St. Margaret’s Parish Church, as Our Lady of Lourdes RC Church only has an area for interring ashes. I must hasten to correct one error in that George Elliott’s bungalow called Silvery Moon was in Saltdean, not in Rottingdean. Moreover, the reader remembers seeing him walk his dog in his later years. Many entertainers still enjoy the quiet charm and excellent views for which Saltdean is so popular. Among current residents are John Mann, the theatre organist, Tony Adams, the actor and Dave Lynn, the country’s favourite drag artiste. I am keen to feature the Oakleaf Café which was at the present Cubbit & West Estate Agents. In the early sixties it was a popular venue for youngsters in the area who I understand held a reunion last year. If you have any memories or photos please do send them to The Deans Magazine.

SCRIBBLERS’ JOURNEY The Housebound Library Service Brighton & Hove Libraries are in the process of setting up a housebound library service and are keen to hear from you if you live in the Deans area and find it difficult to get to your local library. ● Do you have poor health or mobility issues or caring responsibilities that prevent you from getting out of the house? ● Would you like a regular supply of books delivered to your home by a friendly volunteer? ● Do you know someone who might benefit from this service? If you answered yes to any of the above questions the housebound library service may be able to help you. For more information, contact: Julie O’Neil, Community Engagement Manager on 01273 296903 or e-mail library.volunteering@brighton-hove.gov.uk
A new local publication out now Towards the end of 2012, the local creative writing group, The Saltdean Scribblers, published an anthology of their recent work. They called the book, Scribblers’ Journey, and it had the loose theme of Journey, whether real or imaginary, near or far, true or fictional. Unsure of what demand there would be for the publication in a crowded book world, a print run of 100 was ordered. To their surprise and delight, all the copies were sold – like the proverbial hot cakes – and many people were left disappointed. So, by popular demand, a second print run has been made. This time, all the proceeds will go to the Marie Curie Cancer Care charity, chosen as several members have lost loved ones to cancer. The book will be available from the Saltdean Community Library, and the Whiteways Café on the seafront at a cost of £3.00 a copy. Further orders can be made through the Library.

Health & nutrition advice
Bridgeford’s Best Bites:
Curcumin A food of the ginger family, native to Southern Asia and responsible for the golden-yellow colour of curries. Ayurvedic Medicine Used for 1000's of years for its medicinal properties primarily for treatment of heart, liver, lungs and skin. Considered to treat: anaemia, cancer, cardiovascular diseases, cough, diabetes, diarrhoea, digestion, fevers, food poisoning, gallstones, IBS, indigestion, lactation problems, insanity, parasites, mucous and pus, poor circulation, staph infections, urinary infections and wounds; to regulate the female reproductive system and purify the uterus and breast milk, and in men to purify and build semen. Other properties: Detoxify the liver, balance cholesterol levels, fight allergies, stimulate digestion, boost immunity, enhance the complexion. Several Studies Indicate the Therapeutic Benefits of Tumeric: Studies over 25 years have shown the safety and benefits against numerous diseases in humans. The majority of proven positive benefits are related to its anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties. Inflammation and Oxidative Stress - a Silent Cause of Disease We don't suddenly get heart disease, type 2 diabetes, arthritis or cancer. By the time it is diagnosed it may have been developing for many years. We can have a "silent" inflammatory state in our bodies that we are unaware of because initially gives us no symptoms, though left unchecked can lead to a whole host of inflammatory diseases, which are becoming more prevalent. Acute and chronic inflammation is a major factor in the progression of: · Obesity, type II diabetes, arthritis, pancreatitis, cardiovascular disease, neurodegenerative and metabolic diseases, as well as certain types of cancer. · Gastric conditions such as Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, ulcerative proctitis, pancreatitis, peptic ulcer, gastric ulcer, IBS. · Skin conditions such as vitiligo, psoriasis. · Autoimmune disorders.
· · · · · ·
Protection against hepatic conditions, chronic arsenic exposure, and alcohol intoxication. Reduced oxidative stress and inflammation in hepatitis caused by paracetamol. Reduced the severity of pancreatitis-associated lung injury in mice. Used for dyspepsia, stress, and mood disorders. Potential therapeutic applications in aging, endocrine and immunological diseases. Data is being collected on stroke, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease in animals and humans.
Bioavailability / Absorption Unfortunately dietary curcumin has poor bioavailability, i.e. low levels reach the plasma and tissues. This is due to poor absorption in the digestive system, rapid metabolism, and rapid elimination. Bioavailability may be increased by cooking in oil, dissolving in oil or adding black pepper for the piperine, the alkaloid that makes it pungent. We are happy to advise you on your health matters. Wheelie Bins Is your wheelie bin giving out the wrong message? Left outside your property the ''LOOKALIKE SENTRY '' on duty even for a day might be telling an opportunist burglar you are not at home, and could even become a means of gaining easy entry if placed against a wall or fence. Apart from the usual preventative measures ( security light -- post and newspaper retrieval ) when you are away ask a neighbour to wheel your '''BIN''' and put any recycling boxes away out of sight in a safe location. This applies even if you are at work and don't expect to return home until the evening!

Rottingdean Party ThemeCamera Hire - Club local business feature
Platforms and Jamjars Lynette and Alison are two mum's who live in the Deans. They have children who attend Saltdean Primary School and both enjoy living and working in the Deans community. Platforms and Jamjars is a themed party hire business that they began just over a year ago now, although they had been designing and creating events a long time prior to this.
nesses (eg. Face painters, cake makers) to their clients as they believe that the Deans community is rich in talented individuals and that we should support each other.
The main focus for Lynette and Alison is to create a space where you can relax and have fun. They provide a service which means you don't have to trawl the shops or internet for ideas, props and decor as they have already done that for you. All their hire items have been individually sourced or have been especially created by them for a bespoke feel to your event.
Over the last couple of years Lynette and Alison have noticed that more and more people are choosing to throw a party either at home or in a small venue due to reasons such as convenience or the increasing costs of going out. Adding a theme to these events will create a fantastic atmosphere and provide a memorable experience for you and your guests.
They pride themselves on being a very friendly and flexible service. No two parties are the same and so they will adapt the package they provide to your needs which means that every party is unique. Some of the services they provide include; themed table settings/centre pieces, table and chair hire, personalised invitations/party bags, props (eg. Lifesized jail that can be used for either adults or children), ceiling decor, lighting and lots more!! Being a local business they passionately believe in supporting other local businesses and where possible will try to source the products they use for their party packages from local businesses. They will also recommend other local busi-

Having Fun whilst getting Fit Enjoying exercise in a relaxed like minded group contributes to real results with your fitness and improves your daily life. I am Karen and I run local business Fun and Fit which provides quality, affordable fitness classes in the local area which caters for the daytime user. My classes are based at Saltdean Community Centre, Ovingdean Village Hall and Telscombe Civic Centre with colleague Nicola. Fitness is my passion and I love inspiring people to feel good about their bodies and to look after their health. I have been teaching exercise for over 20 years now having started at Figure Focus at The King Alfred Centre when I was 18. I update my knowledge regularly to keep in touch with the latest research and good practice and I am YMCA qualified. My love for Pilates started just over 12 years ago when I slipped a disc in my back resulting in me crawling on all fours to care for my baby. When someone suggested Pilates I gave it a try, as a last resort and found that it strengthened my core muscles and back. So much so that I then trained to teach this discipline too and have never looked back ! Ha ha ! Many people that come to my classes use the time to not only get fitter but to relax. Exercising in a fun environment will not fail to put a smile on your face and allow you to say good bye to stress. I love to see people change physically and mentally, becoming inspired and before you know it they are setting their own fitness goals hooked by the euphoria you feel when getting fit. Ben (age 31) joined my classes exactly 1 year ago and has not only lost over 4 stone in weight and transformed his body, it changed his life. ‘Karen inspires me to make improvements to my fitness every week and I now have so much more energy for life and work, focusing on hitting my goals. Her unrivalled support, guidance and encouragement has really been a life changer for me. I signed up for Karen’s weight loss boot camp and cannot recommend it enough. Karen educated me about food and exercise and to this day i live my life using this knowledge and feel so much better than i did before. Not to mention that i lost a healthy 4.5kg in during the 4 week programme.’
The classes are suitable for everyone -whatever age or gender-the oldest at the moment is 84 and the youngest 23. Everyone feels at ease in our welcoming classes. Chris Humphreys (62 years young) “Body Blast what a great name for something that really gets the whole body into shape. Karen really knows how to get the best out of her ladies. She varies her syllabus so the class doesn't get boring. She's quite the comedian, making us laugh. With the mixture of laughter and exercise I do feel I've worked my whole body when I've been to Karens class. She's Great! “ At Fun and Fit I endeavour to make everyone feel special and to work to their best ability with motivation and fun. We have regular socials at Saltdean Tavern, Molly's Cafe and other local facilities too. Body Blast and Body Circuits are energy based classes designed to help you with weight loss and toning of the body -we use hand weights, skipping ropes and hula hoops to add resistance to our training. Pilates is a gentle form of exercise designed to help you improve your posture ,flexibility and balance and great for finding those tummy muscles and strengthening your back too.Even my Dad with his replacement knee is able to enjoy the class weekly. Run ,Walk ,Stagger is a fun group of like minded people who enjoy a Saturday breath of fresh air, wind or rain and to improve their heart capacity too. We enter fun runs from time to time such as Race For Life, Heroes Run 5-10km, Brookes 10km , Santa Dash 5km and the Brighton Half Marathon. Its for all abilities as the name suggests and it’s an incredibly supportive group who welcome new people. The events give the challenge and buzz you need to improve week by week. Coming to Fun and Fit will help you to: burn fat, improve your cardio fitness and strength, relieve stress, lose inches, look and feel better, feel happy So what are you waiting for? Call Karen on 01273-305827 or email on karen.funandfit@gmail.com

A “Thank you” from Lyndon Wainwright
Only a few of you will know who Lyndon Wainwright is but he now lives in Saltdean He was a leading cabaret dancer appearing with his first wife in some 400 shows a year featuring the Latin dances in the 1950s. Their shows and teaching had much to do with establishing Latin dance in Britain. For several years they ran dance schools in Surrey. In addition to dance he has done many other jobs and has had a very varied career. Since retirement as a performer he has also written many books on dance including one “Let’s Dance” published four or five years ago that has been translated into five other languages. Some of you may have seen his recent brief TV appearances in “Last Dance at the Palais” and in Len Goodman’s show “Len’s Feet”. All the above is merely to introduce Lyndon. It is what he wants to say that is interesting. At one time he was General Secretary of the International Dance Teachers’ Association with offices in
Brighton. This caused him to move 40 years ago into Saltdean. His wife died 18 months ago and he has found that Saltdean and its occupants have been exceptionally kind, thoughtful and helpful. Accordingly he wants to say a very big “Thank You” to all who live in the Deans. He believes that the area is a wonderful one in which to live and that the inhabitants are rather like those who live in a small village. The Deans area being beside the sea is wonderful, the Downs to the north are great but overriding everything else is the friendliness of the area residents. It has always meant much to him but following the death of his wife it has proved to be quite exceptional.
