Welcome

Welcome to the September Edition… What a year this has been so far: Jubilee, sporting success beyond anyone’s ability to imagine and one of the wettest summers on record. Still as I write this the sun is shining and who knows perhaps we will have another record breaking sunny autumn like last year. What does the future hold? If only I had a crystal ball! One thing seems certain though is that there are still tough times ahead, and with small businesses particularly vulnerable I will make the usual request to bear them in mind before you go straight to the internet for your next purchase. We have been able to get an excellent deal on one of our office computers by using a local company, so it really is worth seeing what they might be able to do for you. Keith - Editor

Local business article

Adams & Remers Rose Macfarlane of Adams & Remers

Meet the family – they’ll be familiar to you in one way or another. Sally and Tom live in the Deans, not far from you, and have been married for 11 years. They have a young boy and a girl, and Tom has a teenage daughter, Katie, from a previous relationship.

Tom works for a multi-national firm in Brighton and manages a team. Sally opened a small local shop shortly after she had the children, and enjoys the contact with her local community and other Mums and Dads at the school gate. She used to work for the same multinational as Tom, where they met. With Katie entering her last year of school, Tom and Sally have been thinking about the future. They’re a touch embarrassed to admit that they haven’t prepared Wills since their marriage. Tom had a Will before, though this became invalid when he married Sally. Their estates would therefore be divided under the “Intestacy Rules”, which they don’t want. Their main concern is, of course, who will look after the children if both of them were to die – they went to Paris on their own for the weekend earlier this year and that made them think. Appointing a guardian for Katie will be slightly different than for the other children, and Tom’ll need particular advice about that. Then there’s making sure that those left behind are provided for. There are some insurance policies – a joint policy to pay-off their current mortgage and one in Sally’s sole name on the flat she still owns from her premarriage days. Tom also has death-in-service benefits from his firm, and Sally has a pension from her employment with the same firm, which will pay a lumpsum on her death. So, they’re sorted. Just need a couple of Wills… When planning your Wills, it’s actually really important to think about all those policies, not just the house, flat and savings. Of course, the intention is that they’ll pay off the mortgage and provide some needed cash for those left behind. However, it’s really worth doing more – the potential long-term savings from inheritance tax for your children or other beneficiaries can be huge if you plan ahead how they will receive this money.

Each person may leave up to £325,000 to those other than their spouse (or charity) without inheritance tax being payable. This means that a married couple or civil partners may leave up to £650,000 to the next generation without any inheritance tax being due – anything over that will be taxed at 40%. For many couples, £650K will be plenty, however if a number of policies pay out on your death, this can increase your spouse’s estate surprisingly quickly! So, on the death of your spouse/civil partner, the estate has grown way beyond the equity in the house and flat. Careful estate planning, as part of the preparation of your Wills, is essential to ensure not just that your Wills leave your money and assets to the right people, but that they do so in such a way that secures your family’s future. By placing some of the policies in trust, the money paid out won’t get taxed on your spouse’s death, but will be available for her or him and the rest of the family when you’re not there. Specialist advice is a good place to start, to consider your policies, think about the family needs and the best ways to provide for them should the worst happen. When you seek advice for your Wills, tell your solicitor about all your assets, including policies, as with some clever planning and forward thinking, you can do more to secure your family’s future. Rose Macfarlane is a solicitor specialising in wills, trusts and other private clients matters. You can contact her at Adams & Remers LLP on 01273 403294, email rose.macfarlane@adamsremers.co.uk for a free ten minute chat to see if she can help with your estate planning. This article is not intended to be a full summary of the law and advice should be sought on all issues.

I started drawing and painting as a child and have always followed it through. I am a fan of Turner and also Constable, and children’s illustrators, but I have never knowingly been influenced by any of the Masters and I have never had any training as such. I use different media and colours instinctively and create what I feel is right for me. There is no substitute for expensive materials and I only buy the best . As I was an indentured Leaded Light Maker in my working life, I only ever used the best tools for my trade, so when the tradesman knocks at the door, look at his tool kit and it will tell you what kind of job you are going to get. You can see my work on the Newhaven Art Club Site, to which I belong and I am quite proud of it as I am a real amateur. Last year I went to a tutor for pen& ink wash. Whilst I was there, I watched other students’ techniques and applied these to some of my work, in other media, but on the whole I use a lot of imagination.

I have done paintings of the Lone Twin Boat Project. This boat was built on appeal to schools and to the general public, to donate timber which had to have a history to it. The Project was sponsored by the British Arts Council for the Olympics.

I personally donated timber I found on Kemptown beach when Prime minister Heath’s yacht , ‘Morning Cloud’, foundered in a storm . I also collected and donated timber from the damaged West Pier. I am a very easily motivated person when it comes to my I used to work at Roedean School for Girls . There they work as an artist. would burn old timber so I rescued and donated that. I did have a break from art until I fell ill, necessitating major heart surgery and, in recovery, I rekindled my passion for art as therapy for my recovery. It worked perfectly for me and I am still pursuing my Art on very much a daily basis.

I decided to paint a picture of the Yacht on canvas in Acrylics and donated it for auction for the British Heart Foundation, as a thank you. Tony Freeman glassman1@sky.com

Computer tips from Dolphin Computer Upgrades Computer Tips & Advice 35

Safe to Surf? It has recently been reported that Google is finding almost 10,000 new malicious websites every day. So that’s 10,000 new websites a day that you don't want to click on, which could appear on the pages that you look at when you type in a search query - that makes online browsing a dangerous activity right? Well, the good news is that Google is finding these sites - and setting about getting rid of them so that we are not subjected to them. The bad news is that they are steadily rising and using new methods or bypassing security measures. Proliferation on social media sites is proving rather successful for malware distribution at the moment. So do we give up looking online? Of course not. Do we close our social media accounts? Good god no! Do we leave it up to Google and Facebook to protect us? Unfortunately, for a large number of people, the answer here would be yes. Whilst it is the responsibility of large corporations to do their bit, this doesn't negate your own, personal responsibility. 5 Ways To Stay Safe Online: ● You need to keep informed about what you can and can't do online.

● You need to make sure that you have a decent antivirus/anti-spam/anti-malware product. ● You need to ensure that all of your updates are, well, up to date. ● You need to listen to yourself - if you have any doubts, don't click! ● You need a backup system covering your, erm, rear, just in case the worst should happen. Malware is spread in several ways - malicious websites aren't going to disappear anytime soon - scammers and hackers are almost always one step ahead. Don't leave your online safety to chance - get educated and get protected so that you can enjoy your time online. If you have any further worries or need any more information then please feel free to get in touch. In the meantime we wish you, as always, continued happy and safe computing.

Successful Letting

Successful Renting 16 with Denise Whittington of Lets Go

A Bird’s Eye View! Here in Rottingdean we have been experiencing an influx of visitors. From our shop in the middle of the High Street we have noticed many more people looking at the properties advertised in our window. When they come in to speak to us we discover more about what these visitors think of the village and what they are looking for; be they landlords, tenants, sellers or buyers. Many of these visitors coming from London or from other cities say how much they like the quietness of the area and its convenience for Brighton & London. Others have commented on the variety of property, the slower pace of life, friendly residents, traditional shops, the sea and the beautiful countryside. This increased interest in the village also has an impact on the surrounding local areas as people look outside the immediate vicinity at property to rent or buy.

If you would like to have a chat with Denise about renting out your property or if you are a tenant looking to rent in the area, visit Lets Go at 59 High Street, Rottingdean, Brighton, ‘phone 01273 236547 or email to: denise@letsgoproperty.co.uk. Denise Whittington (B.A) is Director of Lets Go Lettings & Property management specialists, established in 1997. She has lived and worked in the local area for many years. See Denise’s profile on LinkedIn.

Copyright: Denise Whittington August 2012 There is a variety of reasons why people are moving here and looking for a property to rent. Some are taking up a post at one of the Universities, hospitals, or large companies in the area. They may be on contract for a set period of time, or renting while they settle in and look for a property to buy. Families are moving here to be near the excellent schools. Many retired people move to be nearer their family and friends. Some are returning from living abroad, or coming from their own country to work here. And there is a growing trend for people who have sold their home renting for a period while they look for another property to buy. Other people tell us they are moving because they are downsizing or because they need more room; they need a cheaper rent or a property in a better condition; their landlord is selling or they are running a business in the area. As well as a wide variety of reasons for renting there is also a wide variety of requirements that people give us: they want to rent short or long term; need furnished or unfurnished; to be near a bus route, or a station; to have a garden or a balcony; a garage or off street parking; or plenty of storage space. To find out more about renting in our area come and talk to us……..we really do have tenants (and properties) waiting………. PS We also do Sales!

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Symptoms such as numbness, tingling, weakness or muscle wasting in the hand can be due to a condition called carpal tunnel syndrome. However, if you have been suffering from this kind of problem for a while it’s a good idea to consult a health care practitioner to find out what’s going on and rule out other causes. The carpal tunnel is a small hollow at the front of the wrist covered by a tendon. One of the main nerves in the hand, the median nerve, passes through this very narrow space. Because there is little room for expansion, when it becomes pinched it can get inflamed, giving pain and other symptoms which can interfere with normal daily activities and even disrupt sleep. Causes of carpal tunnel syndrome are varied but include using a computer keyboard for long periods of time, playing racquet sports, assembly line work, painting, writing, driving and playing some musical instruments. Women tend to be affected more than men and its onset can be associated with wrist arthritis, being overweight or having diabetes. There are a variety of treatments that can help, including gentle manipulation and stretching of the bones and muscles of the hand and wrist. At Pain Solutions we can also give specialist advice about your computer set-up, showing you how to

reduce strain on your hands, arms and back when working at the keyboard. Using a hand night splint is also an excellent way of preventing your wrist bending when sleeping, which can help to reduce pain and other symptoms. Anti-inflammatory medication may be useful but it is important to look at the underlying cause rather than just treat the symptoms. Most cases of carpal tunnel eventually settle but occasionally steroid injections or even surgery is necessary. If you have any concerns about your hands or arms please contact us at Pain Solutions and we can check things over for you. Local History with Mike Laslett

Local History - Part 7 St Dunstan’s, Ovingdean Gap. Mike Laslett

On 21 February this year, St Dunstan's became the charity Blind Veterans UK. This happened almost a century after Sir Arthur Pearson, the owner of the Evening Standard and founder of the Daily Express, established a charity to help those who had lost their vision in the First World War. It was named The Blinded Soldiers and Sailors Care Committee. For the duration of the war, an American banker, Otto Kahn, One of St Dunstan’s most celebrated residents was veteran lent his house and grounds at St Dunstan's Lodge in London's Henry Allingham. He lived independently until a month before Regent's Park for this rehabilitation work. Other centres around his 110th birthday, when failing eyesight prompted his move to the country such as West House, Brighton (later known as St Dunstan's. He died in his sleep on the morning of 18 July Pearson House) were soon established. The Regent’s Park 2009 at St Dunstan's, aged 113 years and 42 days. property became dilapidated and was vacated in 1921. It was demolished and replaced by Winfield House, home of Barbara Hutton, the Woolworth heiress (remember the Winfield brand at Woolies!) Today it is home to the American Ambassador. A brand new building at Ovingdean Gap opened as a convalescent and holiday home, just before the Second World War broke out. The building in Ovingdean, known locally as “St. Dunstan’s,” is actually called Ian Fraser House after a former chairman. It was constructed from 1937-39 in the International Modern style to the designs of architect Francis Lorne. The seven-storey brick and glass block is said to resemble a bi-plane. A sculpted figure holding the St. Dunstan’s badge stands over the chapel. A new south wing containing a swimming pool was added in 1975.

Wolves in Rottingdean An exhibition of woodcarvings and drawings by sculptor Sue Nunn, including a contemporary interpretation of Rudyard Kipling’s Jungle Book. In the original story, the wolves of the jungle called themselves The Free People. This is title of the exhibition, which includes a life-sized triptych of Jungle Book animals, relief carved in oak. There will also be a collection of more political works, and an area of “querky” pieces, including a woman with a teapot on her head. Always a sculptor, Sue started specialising in woodcarving after the 1987 Hurricane threw lots of wood her way on the streets of Brighton. She continues to use recycled or storm felled wood, always carving by hand using simple mallet and chisels. A unique exhibition! Health & nutrition…

Bridgeford’s Best Bites:

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) A fat-soluble, vitamin-like substance found in blood, organs and membranes. Since its primary function in every cell in the body is in generating energy, the highest concentration is found on the inner membrane of the mitochondria, the power houses inside the cell. Discovery and history Discovered 1957, 1972 a deficiency was demonstrated in human heart disease and 1978 Peter Mitchell received a Nobel prize. Numerous studies worldwide since 1980s in relation to various diseases including cardiovascular diseases and cancer; its antioxidant role as a free radical scavenger was widely studied.

Sources Meat and fish are the richest dietary sources. Vegetable oils are quite rich sources. Parsley is the richest vegetable source, broccoli, grape, and cauliflower are modest sources. Avocado is the only fruit with high content. Frying reduces the content by 1432%. Coenzyme Q10 appears to be a safe supplement with minimal side effects and low drug interaction potential.

Deficiency is either due to decreased production (biosynthesis) or increased need in the body. Biosynthesis can be affected by genetic factors. Chronic disease conditions (cancer, heart disease, etc.) are thought to reduce the biosynthesis and increase the demand for CoQ10 in the body, but there is no definite data to support these claims.

We are happy to advise you on your health matters.

Studies have shown benefits in ● Heart Health: Atherosclerosis, Hypertension and Chronic Heart failure (CHF). ● Statins and Beta Blockers can lower CoQ10 levels in some people with certain genetic factors, causing muscular pain.

An Anti-oxidant against Oxidative stress CoQ10 is used in treatment of a variety of disorders primarily related to suboptimal cellular energy metabolism and oxidative injury. ● Diabetes and obesity are metabolic disorders induced by excessive dietary intake of fat, usually related to inflammation and oxidative stress. CoQ10 was found beneficial in treating high fat induced hyperlipidemia in rats, though it had no direct impact on diabetes. ● Anti-aging: protection from accelerated aging resulting from oxygen free-radical damage and inflammation. ● Fibromyalgia: particularly related to oxidative stress and headaches. ● Alzheimer's: mice showed benefit related to oxidative stress and their behaviour improved. Studies that have shown benefit and need further investigation ● Neuromuscular and neurodegenerative diseases have lowered CoQ10. ● Parkinsons: daily living was improved in early and mid stage. ● Migraine and cyclical vomiting, particularly in combination with magnesium citrate and riboflavin (B2); benefits for adults, children and in pregnancy. ● High blood pressure decreased without significant side effects. ● Cancer: some benefit in the cardiotoxicity from some chemotherapies. ● May be useful in breast and prostate cancer. ● Improved recovery after Cardiac Arrest.

Your monthly update from the Saltdean, Rottingdean & Ovingdean Neighbourwood watch.

PCSO IVAN TICKNER - PCSO FOR EAST SALTDEAN Hello, my name is Ivan Tickner and I am the new Police Community Support Officer for East Saltdean and I thought I would like to share with you my introduction into the role. On the 23 of January 2012 I had my first day of training at Lewes Head Quarters; this is where I would spend the next seven weeks. The intense training was mainly classroom based with a small amount of role play. The time spent training seemed to go very quickly and I couldn’t wait to put into practice everything that I had learnt.

many different people from all walks of life and engaged with as many members of the community as possible. I feel things have gone very well so far and I have enjoyed playing my part in preventing and dealing with low level crimes and anti-social behaviour and am looking forward, with enthusiasm, to the future.

My first day in Peacehaven was a very nerve racking day as I didn't know exactly what to expect! I was very lucky as I had already met my tutor/mentor PCSO Chris Marchant. At first my time was spent shadowing him and absorbing all of his very useful information and guidance. Before working in Peacehaven, Telscombe Cliffs and East Saltdean I didn’t really know the area very well but I soon picked that up.

Please stop me and say hello when you see me out and about and do not hesitate to contact me on Tel: 101 Extension 62055/ mobile 07826921132 / email ivan.tickner@sussex.pnn.police.uk if I can be of any help. For more information on Neighbourhood Watch please contact Linda Hood, secretary 01273 306441 or email nhw.srosec@hotmail.co.uk

I worked with Chris Marchant for roughly two months and then I began independent patrol which means I am now trained and capable to work alone. During my time in the area I have met

Rottingdean Camera Club

ROTTINGDEAN CAMERA CLUB NEWS We have had a very successful 2011/12 season with some fascinating guest speakers showing us spectacular examples of their work and giving us tips about their techniques along the way. We have had our regular programme of competitions and some of our new members have had impressive wins. And it hasn't always been the photographer with the most expensive equipment who has won. During the summer we have had photo shoots on the Wey and Arun Canal, and been guests at a local brewery where photos and samples were dually taken. We are looking forward to next season, which begins on Monday Oct 1st. 7.30pm at the Rottingdean Whiteway Centre. Beginners and experts alike are most welcome. Please join us to share our knowledge and skills in a friendly and informative atmosphere. We aim to have fun along the way too.

Our website at http://www.rottcc.co.uk/ carries information about the Club and a selection of some of the member’s photographs. And our Secretary, Brian Knight is always pleased to talk to prospective members on 302605. Thanks to a generous grant from the National Lottery, the Club has an excellent high definition digital projector which shows our (and perhaps your?) photographs at their very best on our huge screen. Not sure? Well come along to one of our meetings and meet us. I'd like to think that the Club has turned me from a snapper into a photographer. Perhaps we can do the same for you.
