Welcome

3

Welcome to the October Edition… As 2012 races past and the promise of long cold nights and short days is just around the corner it is good that we are also coming into the fun time of year when we can enjoy Halloween and Fireworks with our friends and families. It is also a good time to ensure all your home maintenance is up to date before the winter really sets in and wet weather finds the weak spots. The Deans Magazine has a wide range of local trades people who can help ensure that the leaky roof doesn’t become a raging torrent,or that the niggling noise from the radiators doesn’t become a broken down boiler in the middle of winter, I’m sure you can think of your own examples, but what ever it is do keep our local traders in mind. Finally don’t forget to check out the exciting news about local author Clare Derby on page 41. Clare has appeared in The Deans Magazine before and we are really pleased to see her work going from strength to strength.

Artist of the month

Mick Bensley Newhaven lifeboat taking the crew from the ‘Vega’ c. 1954

I was born in Sheringham on the Norfolk coast, trained at the Norwich School of Art and then moved to London where I worked as a graphic designer and illustrator for the next fifteen years. I moved back to Sheringham where I took up painting full time My marine and landscape paintings from this period are widely exhibited and are in private collections worldwide. The seeds of my inspiration for marine and lifeboat paintings were sown in the 1950’s on Sheringham beach around the fishermen watching the North sea in its many moods and hearing stories of the courage and determination of the lifeboat crews battling against overwhelming odds, in the face of a North Sea gale. It is this selfless courage that motivates me to paint these pictures. I have held many major exhibitions reconstructing rescues from around the British coastline. Everything was researched very carefully from R.N.L.I . records. The books I have written and illustrated are Watercolours of Norfolk Past, the Wells and Blakeny Lifeboats, The Sheringham Lifeboats, The Rescues of the Caister Lifeboats, the Rescues of Henry Blogg and the crews of the Cromer Lifeboats. In 1980 I moved to Rottingdean and produced a book ‘Watercolours of Sussex

Past’ with verse by the great Bob Copper. I now live and work overlooking the sea at Rottingdean. I am an admirer of the great marine artists W. L. Wyllie and Arthur Briscoe. CHRISTMAS EXHIBITION AT THE GRANGE ROTTINGDEAN I am holding an exhibition at the Grange Art Gallery Rottingdean Thursday Nov 29th – Tuesday December 18th (closed all day wednesdays) I divide my time between painting and teaching . I undertake commissions, including portraits, marine paintings, landscapes, individual houses and animal portraits. so if you wish to contact me mickbensley@gmail.com Tel: 01273 390062 Website: www.mickbensley.com

Computer tips from Dolphin Computer Upgrades Computer Tips & Advice 36

Trick or Treat ? Halloween looms in front of us meaning the likelihood of Trick or Treaters knocking at our door. Whilst some see this as harmless fun, for others it’s a menace and something to avoid. We may be able to put up posters discouraging unwanted visitors on our door step, but what about our computers? Email scams are becoming more sophisticated, and more prolific. This week alone we have had the following emails sent to us: ● HMRC - informing us that we are entitled to a tax rebate – we just need to click on the link and fill in our details for our rebate to be credited to our account. ● A well known bank – someone has tried to access our account and if we don’t follow the links in the email and resubmit our details our account will be locked and we won’t be able to access our money. ● American Airlines – there have been alterations to our bookings and we need to click here to ensure we don’t lose our tickets. ● Facebook – as we haven’t logged in for a while access to our account is being suspended unless we resend our log in details.

Of course, if you don’t pay tax you are unlikely to be fooled by an HMRC email; if you don’t have an account with that particular bank you won’t worry about your account being inaccessible; if you’ve never booked a flight in your life you won’t worry about losing tickets, etc. But if you do happen to have dealings with the company the scammers are pretending to be, these emails can look very genuine. As they become more sophisticated it becomes more difficult to spot them. If you have any doubts do not click on links or attachments! For any further advice, please don’t hesitate to give us a call – we’d rather you were safe than scammed.

Councillor’s Surgeries

Your opportunity to speak to a local Councillor Councillors surgeries are held each month apart from December. The principle of holding surgeries is to ensure Councillors are easy to contact for the residents of the ward. We may also be contacted via telephone, email or letter. The Rottingdean Coastal Ward includes West Saltdean, Rottingdean, Ovingdean, Roedean, Brighton Marina and parts of Sussex Square. The ward covers a large area and therefore, it is impossible to hold regular surgeries in all parts of the ward. The problems which residents come to discuss are varied but the most common are planning issues, general maintenance of the ward such as grass cutting and litter, traffic/roads, schools, social services issues and more recently Saltdean Lido. Quite often a resident will come to Councillor surgery with an issue that is not Council related

but often we are able to guide them in the correct direction where they can receive help. Local History with Mike Laslett

Local History - Part 8 Rottingdean Windmill Mike Laslett

The windmill on Beacon Hill is a familiar landmark between Roedean and Rottingdean. The original Rottingdean mill was erected south of Bazehill Road in the 18 century. The present windmill dates from 1802 and was built for Thomas Beard, a member of an old Rottingdean family. It is a grade 2 listed smock mill. A smock mill is traditionally a weather-boarded mill with six or eight sloping sides and a revolving cap which allows the sails to take advantage of the wind. They were given this name because of their resemblance to a farmer’s smock. The mill was used to grind local corn into flour for village bakers. In 1877 the miller was George Nicholls. His young son Harry went around the village each day delivering hot rolls before going to school. Sir Edward Burne-Jones’ wife Georgiana records seeing the mill working in 1880. However, by the end of that century, the only use of the miller’s home was as a changing room for the cricketers who played on Beacon Hill until the First World War.

The mill has been known internationally since the artist Sir William Nicholson produced a woodcut of the mill. This was used as the emblem or colophon for Heinemann publishers and has appeared on the spine of their books since 1897. The mill is open on the 3 Sunday of each month, from May to September.

The mill’s disrepair resulted in many efforts by landowners and villagers to preserve it. The machinery was removed and an internal steel framework fitted to hold the structure together. In 2001 a £40,000 Heritage Lottery Grant enabled the sails, or “sweeps” as they are known, to be restored. The current Trustees of the mill are The Rottingdean Preservation Society. Forthcoming Lido Nights Events Autumn and winter has some fantastic entertainment lined up by Lido Nights. As usual all events take place at Saltdean Community Centre and with a lot of the worrying building issues now out of the way we plan to end the year with a bang! They have had a fantastic year with two number 1s on the British Country Music Chart, plus they had two nominations for Best Album and Best Original Song at this years British Country Music Awards. Even if you’re not a country music fan, don’t miss this great band! Tickets available on the night at £2.50.

artists in this genre around , in fact Neil Gordon (Sinatra) has just finished a stint playing ‘old blue eyes’ in the touring production of the West End show The Rat PackLive from Las Vegas. The show is on for two nights – Friday 30th November & Saturday 1st December and tickets will sell out fast. For further info or to reserve tickets for these events call Chris on : 01273 303816 or email: lidonights@hotmail.co.uk.

Judging by the standard of the auditions this will be a great show put on by the cream of our young local talent. Please try and support this event as everyone has given their time for free including the Community Centre who have waved all room hire charges. Keep your eyes open for a celebrity judge or two plus the Mayor of Brighton presenting the prizes! Our end of year spectacular is an incredible Rat Pack Night starring none other than Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Marilyn Monroe. They are backed by a terrific 11 piece band including close harmony singers The Doo Wop Dolls. These are probably the best tribute

Dizzy Tilly's first children's book is published! Hi I'm Clare! Dizzy Tilly is my friendly farm character who comes with me every Wednesday and Friday to Dizzy Tilly Kids! & to Dizzy Tilly's children's Parties! With the help from Dizzy Tilly and her farm friends my aim is to teach children about every day experiences and to allow young children to explore the Dizzy Tilly adventures, to learn about places they visit, how these places help us and how children can feel happy and safe to go there. My first book is "Dizzy Tilly Goes To The Farm" where she meets all types of farm animals and finds out how they help us to keep fit and healthy!

Clare, Dizzy Tilly and the Rockinghorse team

In This first range of books, we shall also see Dizzy Tilly going to the Hairdressers, with Thanks to Head High in Saltdean! Also the Dentist and even to School. Children can have mixed feelings about all these places and I would like my new books to be a learning tool to sit and read together and enjoy the big full colour photographs of Dizzy Tilly showing them when she visits these places it can be fun too! Dizzy Tilly will give a percentage of every book sale to the Children's Charity Rockinghorse who help sick children in Sussex. Dizzy Tilly and Rockinghorse teamed up on the 1st of September, for the Storytelling event, held in Churchill Square, Brighton, and with a second event on Saturday 27th October, the Half Term week, again In Churchill Square, with four mini Dizzy Tilly Shows for you to bring the children down to meet Dizzy Tilly for storytelling, play her games, guess her surprises and see the magic post box! For more information on The Dizzy Tilly book range, local events, Dizzy Tilly Kids! clubs and party fun time please visit www.dizzy-tilly-kids.com

Health & nutrition advice

Bridgeford’s Best Bites:

Aloe Vera Aloe Vera is a species of succulent plant from Africa that is spiky with thick green fleshy leaves and can grow to a metre tall. It has been mentioned as a herbal medicine for about 2000 years though it may have been used for much longer. It is used in Indian medicine for colic, constipation, skin diseases, worm infestations and infections. In Trinidad and Tobago it i used to treat hypertension. Mexican Americans use it to treat type2 diabetes..Extracts are used in cosmetics and natural therapies for their soothing, healing and rejuvenating properties. It's effect on the mucous membranes probably accounts for the gut benefits people experience; better gut function can influence so much of our health and may be related to the reduction in joint pain experienced. The scientific evidence to date is quite limited and contradictory yet does not prevent many people from feeling the benefits of this wonderful plant, though It can be toxic to the liver at certain doses both taken internally and when used topically on the skin, particularly if using the whole leaf extract. Scientific Studies: Wounds Acute burn wounds and skin biopsies did not heal faster, though haemorrhoidectomies did. Skin protection It's anti-inflammatory properties are useful against dermatological disorders such as psoriasis and atopic dermatitis. Many people experience relief from sunburn with application of Aloe Vera. Cancer It's wound healing and anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal and immumomodulatory properties helped prevent and treat the radiation induced mucositis (mouth ulcers) and oral candidiasis produced from certain head and neck cancer treatments. Some inhibitory effect on gastric cancer cells. Quinones in Aloe are being studied for their anti-cancer effects. Diabetes Emodin from Aloe Vera was shown to be potentially beneficial in the prevention and treatment of type 2 diabetes. Obesity A dietary Aloe formula reduced obesity-induced inflammatory responses and suppressed pro-inflammatory responses and reduced percentage body fat suggesting it's use as a nutritional intervention against type2 diabetes and obesity-related inflammation.

Alzheimer's Disease Some benefits were shown clinically and physiologically. Liver Hepatic fibrosis from viral infection eased and inflammation was inhibited, yet another study showed hepatitis caused by Aloe Vera. Adding Aloe Vera to your diet and life A teaspoon of liquid can be taken orally or added to shakes. Many topical creams are available for anti-ageing and restorative and calmative effects. We are happy to advise you on your health matters.
