Welcome

Welcome to the December Edition… This month’s edition of The Deans definitely has a festive feel to it, what with lots of seasonal adverts, the Christmas Open House on page 7 and we even managed to fit in a Christmas fun page (page 61) for anyone who wants a groan over some terrible jokes and quizzes. All this means plenty of opportunities to buy an unusual gift or a way to treat yourself, personally I’ll be looking out for a new mobile phone for my daughter, so following the advice of Dolphin computers - see page 11.

What ever you do have fun, stay warm and look out for any neighbours who might not be lucky enough to have family to visit it can be a lonely time for some.

Winifred Hoyle in rememberance

Winifred Hoyle A local appeal for funding for a memorial bench Do you remember Winifred Hoyle, know as "Rottingdeans" Queen Mum ? She started the Rottingdean Cavalcade around the 1950's, ran the Girls Club and provided beautiful costumes to Rottingdean Drama Society and groups in and around the village. Her doll collection stood in the Grange for many years . She was a well known Rottingdean figure and took an active part in the life of the village. I have contacted the council "adopt a bench" programme along with, Winifred’s family and a group of of friends about a bench in her memory. The bench is to be sited in the village around the bowling green area. If anyone would like to send A donation towards the cost of the bench and plaque please contact me, Anita Gilson on 01273 303057. If you prefer you can contact Barrie Wood on

Local history

Local History - Part 21

Mike Laslett

Trains & Boats and Planes: This month - Boats!

In modern times we barely notice the massive container ships ploughing along the distant horizon. Our ancestors would have particularly noticed large ships for two reasons: shipwrecks and smugglers. There were so many shipwrecks in the 18 Century that locals erected experimental ropes and winding machines to winch any survivors to the cliff top, sadly with little success. One of the worst local shipwrecks occurred in 1800, on the rocks just west of Newhaven, when 105 men from HMS Brazen were lost. A memorial to them stands in St Michael’s churchyard, Newhaven. Captain James Hanson perished with his ship, the only survivors being one crewman on board and twelve men who were fortuitously aboard a foreign vessel they had detained the previous night. One consequence of this tragedy was that local people raised funds for a lifeboat at Newhaven in 1803, some 20 years before the first RNLI boat was introduced. Smugglers will feature in a future article but we cannot feature shipping without some mention of smuggling. Each gap in the cliffs made an ideal landing point, especially Saltdean Gap. Handy cellars and deep paths across the Downs assisted the concealment of contraband on its journey inland. Originally wool was smuggled abroad to avoid taxation then luxuries like brandy and tobacco were imported. At one time most villagers took part, even the Vicar of Rottingdean, Dr Hooker, and Captain Dunk, a butcher who lived at Whipping Post Cottage. Riding officers patrolled the cliff-tops in an attempt to prevent smuggling. With surplus sailors available after the Napoleonic Wars, a Blockade was set up, which eventually formed a permanent coastguard service. Most coastguard cottages, including those at Saltdean, no longer exist. However, those at

Portobello may still be seen opposite the Smugglers Rest, which was once the home of the Chief Coastguard.

The 19 Century would have seen safer and more legitimate shipping. Large paddle steamers operated on the ferry routes from Newhaven to France, while from 1823 the Chain Pier finally gave Brighton a landing stage for the arrival of the great and good including Queen Victoria.

Pubwatch in the Deans

National Pubwatch Hello my name is Joanna, my husband Jim & I own the Downs Hotel in Woodingdean. His family was one of the 1 to settle in the new estate of Woodingdean in the 50’s & consequently he has seen many changes throughout the years. One of the negative changes occurring in recent times is drink in most pubs within the whole Saltdean, that drugs and violence has encroached into society, it is Rottingdean & Woodingdean areas. no longer just the big cities that have antisocial We invited the licensing police along to our meetings, behaviour, now too our pubs are becoming targeted. and this has been a good exercise for both publicans and The Deans area has been seen as a soft target, friendly the police, we are assured that to show their support for local pubs without doormen, security or police has our group they will become more visible around our attracted some unsavoury characters. This is pubs and hotels, even if it is just for a cuppa tea and to unacceptable to the decent hard working publicans of get to know the local people better. the Deans area. We will not allow antisocial behaviour to become imbedded in our villages. Realistically we will never completely stamp out what has occurred since smugglers were in Rottingdean in the The pubs of Saltdean, Rottingdean, & Woodingdean 1550’s but what we can and are doing is committing to have formed an action group and out of this is born The ensuring locals and tourists alike are attracted to our Deans Pubwatch. villages & pubs for nothing more than a great welcome, The Deans Pubwatch is set up to share information and friendly atmosphere, and superb food & beer. improves communications, our commitment is if someone is banned from one pub they will be banned from all pubs that means they will not be able eat or

Health & nutrition advice

Bridgeford’s Best Bites:

Black Pepper Black pepper is native to south India and is cultivated in other tropical regions. Vietnam is currently the world's largest producer and exporter. Dried ground pepper has been used for its flavour and medical properties since antiquity. It is the world's most traded spice and one of the most common spices added to European cuisine and its descendants. The spiciness of black pepper is due to the chemical piperine. Folklore and Traditional Medicinal Uses in South Asia ● Digestive problems: an appetizer, colic, constipation, diarrhoea, dyspepsia, flatulence, piles, to eradicate parasitic worms ● Coughs and colds, sore and inflamed throats and hoarseness, toothache ● Anaemia, diabetes, heart problems, hepatitis, reproductive and urinary disorders ● Combined with other remedies for cholera, syphilis ● External application to boils, to treat hair loss and some skin diseases, to alleviate itching ● As an aphrodisiac Modern Science Shows ● Anti-Oxidant / Anti-Inflammatory: Reduced oxidative stress and inflammation in rats. Extensive research revealed that obesity, a major risk factor for type 2 diabetes, atherosclerosis, cancer, and other chronic diseases, is a pro-inflammatory disease. ● Arthritis: May be useful in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. Inhibits monosodium urate crystal-induced inflammation; a therapeutic treatment of acute gouty arthritis. ● Blood pressure: Normalized blood pressure in rats; improved reactivity of aortic rings. ● Cholesterol: Lowers blood lipids in vivo and inhibits cholesterol uptake in vitro. Reduces cholesterol uptake by internalising the cholesterol transporter proteins. ● Cancer: Potential agent for the prevention and treatment of various cancers, including colon, rectal, liver, lung, oesophagus, cervical, human breast; significantly reduced the androgen dependent and androgen independent tumour growth in mice with prostate cancer cells. ● Diabetes / Metabolic Syndrome: Improved glucose tolerance in rats. Reduces symptoms of human metabolic syndrome in HCHF-fed rats by reducing inflammation and oxidative stress. ● Digestion: Increases microvilli length and perimeter in the gut, increasing the absorptive surface of the small intestine, providing increased bioavailability of micronutrients.

● Immune: Immunomodulatory; can promote the maintenance of a healthy immune system. ● Obesity: Potential treatment for obesity-related diseases. ● Neuroprotective: it is protective if the nervous system ● Parkinson's: Depletes inflammatory markers in inflammation-induced Parkinson's in rats. ● Resveratrol: Enhanced the bioavailability of resveratrol, with its multitude of health-promoting properties. ● Vitiligo: Stimulates melanocyte replication in vitro; may be useful in treating this depigmenting disease. The present study suggests that exposure to bright sunlight should be avoided both during active application of piperine to the skin and in the storage of piperine products. Adding Black Pepper to your Diet: Freshly ground organic is my favourite. We are happy to advise you on your health matters. Neighbourhood Watch

Don’t have the Winter Blues Use your keys! We make no apologies for once again having to send out the message about securing your property! It has been reported that some of the burglaries and car crimes committed recently in the Deans have been the result of owners NOT securing their property or car!! Please, please think KEY and make sure you remember to use it - don't make it easy for the opportunist criminal. Hints for a safe and happy Christmas Don't leave packages visible in the car. Place valuables and shopping in the boot. Remember to lock the car. Hide your pin number when using an ATM Don't be distracted when using the ATM and check around you. Leaving empty packages that advertise your new 50" TV or Play station etc. by your recycling bin lets criminals know what valuables you have on your property! Don't leave presents in an area that can been seen through your window. When having that well deserved coffee while shopping remember not to put your bag on the floor! You would be surprised how quickly it can disappear. Gentlemen, keep your wallet in a secure place - not your back pocket which can easily be picked!

Don't put your bag & packages down when looking for that special size jumper for your favourite Aunt! Keep them on your arm. Someone can distract you and their accomplice quickly walks off with them. Likewise, when trying on shoes don't walk to the mirror leaving your bags no matter how close the mirror is. All the above are actually known to have happened to people in the Deans so be extra careful don't let it happen to you. Your Neighbourhood Watch committee would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a safe and happy 2014. For more information about Neighbourhood Watch please contact Secretary Linda Hood 01273 306441 nhw.sro-sec@hotmail.co.uk or website: www.sro-nhw.moonfruit.com

News from Meridian Vet

Vets Abroad Andrea Rhodes works for Meridian Veterinary Practice in Peacehaven and Vetcall out of hour’s emergency hospital in Brighton and has been volunteering abroad for the charity Naturewatch where she is involved in a small animal neutering scheme. In 2012 Andrea volunteered to go to Samos (one of the Greek islands) for the Worldwide Veterinary Service with her daughter Harriet, who at the time was a first year Vet student. More recently she went to the Ukraine for the Naturewatch neutering scheme. Naturewatch promotes responsible pet ownership and neutering of cats and dogs abroad. The projected started after the press reports about stray animal numbers being reduced by shooting and poisoning before the European football matches held in Ukraine and Poland in 2012.

also appeared on Ukrainian television to promote the benefits of having dogs and cats neutered. Between 3 and 4 million adoptable animals are euthanized in animal shelters each year simply because they do not have homes. These high numbers are the result of unplanned litters that could have been prevented. Neutering dramatically reduces the number of stray animals on the streets and can help reduce the incidence of some of the most common types of cancers so your animal is likely to live a longer and healthier life.

Andrea flew to Kharkov in Eastern Ukraine, about 16 miles from the Russian border to spend a week neutering cats and dogs. She worked with three experienced Ukrainian vets and two vet students. Although the vets were experienced, the procedure isn’t routine for them unlike Andrea who has been neutering animals almost daily for 34 years. Cats belonging to members of the public were brought in and neutered while the owners waited in the waiting room until they were recovered and were ready to go home, whereas the dogs were often strays from the shelters. Andrea, alone, neutered about 10 animals a day in Ukraine working for 10 hours every day. Andrea

Andrea says volunteering is something that I have wanted to do for years, but didn’t have the time until my children had grown up. You could say I’m filling the gap they left when they went to University. I felt that I wanted to use my veterinary knowledge for a good cause. I worked for the PDSA for 23 years so I’m probably a charity vet at heart. I have spent years making cakes, helping out with PTA events, at scouts and brownie camps and fundraising for various local causes and I felt that it was time to use my professional abilities to help others. Volunteering gets me out of my daily routine and fires my enthusiasm for the job: it reminds me of why I became a vet.

Anti Aging Christmas feature

Anti Aging Therapy A trip to see Marianna this month for a blissful hour of Indian Head massage combined with a face lift massage. But what are the benefits of combining these types of massage? We all know that receiving a therapy is really good for us but it is a very personal thing. There are many types of therapies out there on offer. Having come from this business background as a Reflexologist, Swedish masseuse and Reiki technician I understand that not all therapies fit the client. For me Indian Head massage is one of the best. Marianna qualified earlier this year (I was a case study for her) and she has been developing her own style to provide the best for her clients. I have experienced first hand this development and these last visits have yielded the best results I have ever had. Last year I had Vertigo. It is one of those things that can linger and although the main symptoms went I could still lose my balance, feel dizzy and experience ear pain on occasion. As Marianna worked on me I could feel something dislodging in my ears. I felt great, but the next day I woke up with the spinning and nausea. I knew it was a result of the massage and was a positive thing, so I just started my day. Drove my son to his training, parked up and curled up and slept for an hour in the car. When I awoke, to my relief I felt better. A walk in Stanmer park on a lovely crisp

morning did the rest and my balance has been greatly improved since. I think people have to understand that therapies are a joint effort between therapist and client. During my treatment I always wish as much healing for my therapist as they do for me, as I know it can be an exhausting trade and they are only human. Every month Marianna provides our readers with great offers so that they can come and experience her treatments for themselves. She combines her treatments so that you feel great inside and look fantastic on the outside. Anne Briffett

Over Eaters Anonymous

Over Eaters Anonymous “I used food to deal with my life and how I felt… From as early as I remember, food has had a central role in my life. My experience is both over-eating and bingeing or under-eating and starving. I came to Overeaters Anonymous (OA) when all I could think about was food. I couldn't stop eating no matter how much I tried. I used food to deal with my life and how I felt, which was terrible most of the time. If anything bad happened, I planned to eat food. I used to find relief in food, but it stopped working long ago. OA has given me a way to deal with the difficult times without turning to food, and for that I'm truly grateful. In my first OA meeting, I knew I was in the right place. I’d not really spoken freely about what I did with food before but people understood. Since then I've kept on coming back to meetings. My life is by no means perfect, but for today it is not centred on food. I used to miss out on so much as I hid away and ate, making the aching loneliness that I felt worse. I now have a loving fellowship of people I can draw on for support and share the good and bad times with. I need never be alone and one day at a time I can have freedom from food obsession.”

This is one of many hundreds of stories that you will hear about if you are in OA. Some members wish to lose weight and others to put weight on because they are anorexic orbulimic. Once fellows begin to understand the programme, they Soon realize that OA is not just about our weight. It is a programme that deals with our emotions and spirituality and our reasons for eating. We are a fellowship or a self help group that use tools like sponsors, meetings, literature and eating plans to help us gain peace and serenity.

Overeaters Anonymous Co-op Supermarket, Peacehaven

Thurs: 7.30pm A self help group for people who wish to change their behaviour around food and eating.
