Welcome

Welcome to the December Edition… Welcome to the final edition for 2014! It seems like no time at all since January when I was saying welcome to 2014. In this issue there are some rather nice gift ideas both for yourself and your family and friends - be it high tech equipment - page 9, special gifts - pages 40-41 or a luxurious pampering for yourself with one of our therapists or hair and beauty companies. Also there is a special feature on Christmas party entertainment by our regular local advertiser - First & Foremost - on page 32. We have had a number of requests to update details in our What’s On section - page 44/45 this month, and this is a good opportunity for me to remind anyone whose group has details in there to please let us know of any change in the printed information - it is the only way we know to keep them up to date. Don’t forget our deadline for January is Friday 12 December. Keith - Editor

Heroes or Villains? The Smugglers of Rottingdean at the Grange! From Rottingdean’s famous SMUGGLERS’ NIGHT on December 6th , throughout the Festive Season, the Gallery at the Grange is mounting exhibitions, shows and events inspired by the truths and the fictions behind Rottingdean’s notorious smuggling history . For some time, artists Amanda Davidson and Philip Sugg have been developing sets based on Regency Toy theatres , reflecting the popular romantic view of the smuggler. Now they plan to explore these ideas with Brighton puppeteers Touched Theatre in performance. Meanwhile Vincenzo Donlini, whose exhibition earlier this year was so successful, will recreate images closer to the reality of smuggling. Other local artists will contribute a treasure trove of unique cards and gifts so that you can browse the contraband while your children enjoy activities devised by Will-O-Wisp, returning by popular demand. Artworks make stunning and memorable Christmas presents, so dont forget to visit your local artists in their houses and studios over the coming weeks - those in the Artists Open Houses weekends plus other local artists who open by appointment to suit you. Just give them a ring for a no obligation view of paintings, ceramic and fused glass sculpture, jewellery, drawings, prints, cards etc. Christine Harfleet Maggie Edwards Amanda Davidson Jan Mnich -

Computer tips from Dolphin Computer Upgrades Computer Tips & Advice 63
Christmas Email Scam It's the most wonderful time of the year - for scammers that is! Most internet scams prey on emotions to fool us and this time of year we can become more susceptible than usual. One of the most common email scams is that of your "missed delivery" - this can come in a variety of forms but usually informs you that, as the delivery driver found nobody at home, you need to click on the attachment to rearrange the delivery. When you do it looks like a load of gobbledy gook but it's not - the chances are that you have opened the door to something nasty infesting your computer. This scam works so well at this time of year because even if we are not shopping online there is strong chance that somebody has sent us something through the post. And this is how the online scammers work best - they are chancers, and there is a strong chance you will
open an attachment if it appears to be from a genuine delivery firm. So what should you do? After all, you are expecting a delivery and you may well have missed it. You should never open an attachment unless you are 100% certain that it is genuine and a great many email scams are very clever at making it look like they are the real thing. If you do believe you have missed your delivery, call the company direct, not from any email communication, but from searching their contact details out separately. And finally, if you do think that you may have made a mistake don't hope that it will just go away - it won't. We are here if you just want to pick up the phone and ask us; we hope that you stay safe this Christmas.

We Three Kings Ovingdean By Conway Dunn Village Stores Published by Pen Press
Another book by Saltdean author Conway Dunn. " We Three Kings " is an examination of the reigns of the three most famous kings in the Old Testament - Saul, David and Solomon. It is conducted in the form of three plays, one per king. The setting is fictional : a courtroom with prosecution, defence and judge. The king is the defendant, and the question is, was his reign a good one? The jury is the reader. There is humour, but the work is essentially serious, providing history and raising theological, moral and legal questions, and the constant one of, how do we judge people of another age? "We Three Kings" by Conway Dunn. Price £8.99 Available at Waterstones and City Books, Brighton, and from the author 01273 300503 or email agatha10@btinternet.com

Health & nutrition advice
Bridgeford’s Best Bites:
Cacao
Chocolate as a health food
Chocolate is processed from the pod of the cacao plant, grown in the tropics. The Mayans were probably the first to cultivate the cacao plant. The early chocolate drink, considered a "drink of the Gods" was mixed with cinnamon and pepper, tasting bitter and strong, and most appreciated for its invigorating and stimulating effects than for its taste. Nutrition: Rich in magnesium, phosphorus and potassium; high in polyphenols, especially flavonols (antioxidants). Theobromine is the alkaloid responsible for its bitter taste and has similar though lesser effect to caffeine; it is toxic to dogs. Phenylethylamine functions as a neuro-modulator responsible for the stimulant (norepinephrine) and feel good (dopamine) factors. Science: Anti-Inflammatory: modulates inflammatory markers of atherosclerosis Anti-Oxidant: due to flavonoids, especially epicatechin Cardiovascular: manage and prevent hypertension, reduction in cardiovascular events and strokes Cholesterol: lowering effects Exercise: decreased soreness after exercise Immune: modulation due to flavonoids Kidneys: increased oxygenation to renal medulla; more study needed Liver: reduced levels of liver enzymes in HIV and hepatitis-C patients and may help in alcoholic fatty liver prevention; more study needed Malaria: hypothesized as a prophylactic to fight malaria Mind/Mood: Improved mood and cognitive function due to neurovascular coupling, recommended for the elderly; inhibition of tryptophan breakdown in vitro. Flavinoids are important in learning and memory, lowering the risk of Alzheimer's; decreased mental fatigue, may be related to improved endothelial function and blood flow Neuro-Protective: due to anti-oxidant properties Obesity: decrease in expression of genes involved in fatty acid synthesis, reducing digestion and absorption of fats and carbohydrates and increasing satiety
Variations for Christmas Flavour, mix in any or all of the following as desired: 1 part fresh orange juice 1 part desiccated coconut 1 part sesame seeds 1 part crushed nuts 1/4 part ground cinnamon Sprinkle of black pepper and/or cayenne pepper Roll in desiccated coconut and sprinkle with raw cacao. We are happy to advise you on your health matters. Adding Chocolate to your Diet: The above results apply to real cacao and not the commercial chocolate bars! A Real Chocolate Recipe that is quicker than a trip to the store: Ingredients: 3 parts coconut oil 3 parts raw cacao powder 1 part liquid sweetener (I like maple syrup due to its nutrient content) Using 1 part as a 1 tablespoon makes about 4 truffles. Method: Melt coconut oil in a double boiler, mix in cacao and maple syrup. Place the mixture in the freezer for 5 minutes, then roll into balls, like truffles; can also be set in a mold.

Local history
Local History - Part 31 Mike Laslett
The Undercliff Walk
As the chalk cliffs erode they leave behind a collection of rock pools, fun to play in but insufficient to prevent further erosion of the cliffs. For centuries, Brighton had the protection of simple groynes, but protective walls at the cliff base are a Twentieth Century novelty. Later in 1935 the wall was extended to the Brighton boundary and slightly further by the predecessor of Lewes District Council in 1963. The Undercliff Walk is now 3.35 miles long and forms part of a 7.5 mile promenade from Portslade to Saltdean. The majority of the work was carried out by Welsh miners under a government grant to help unemployment during the depressed 1930’s. They can be seen here working on the tunnel leading from the Lido. Charles Dickens wrote “Dombey & Son” in 1847. Young Dombey was sent to Doctor Blimber’s Academy. You can see him with his school chums, amusing themselves on Brighton beach before there was any promenade. Their dress is not really suitable for such an activity! In 1928, when Rottingdean parish was absorbed by Brighton, an impressive sea wall at the base of the cliffs was created to prevent erosion which could have destroyed the coast road, as well as the main sewer to Portobello. The Undercliff Walk, as it became known, was designed by borough engineer David Edwards. It was opened in July 1933 and extended to Saltdean Gap in July 1935. An outdoor swimming-pool was built at Rottingdean to replace sea bathing facilities lost to the wall.
Welsh Miners 1933
Rottingdean swimming-pool no longer exists. It was demolished and there is now a Multi-Use-Games Area provided by PARC in memory of 19 year old Connor Saunders who died in Rottingdean recently. Connor’s Court

This free, permanently fenced games court has facilities for 5 a side football, basketball, mini football and cricket practice. Today’s youngsters will enjoy it all the more for not having to wear top hats!! If you are able to make any donation towards providing this facility please contact Cathy Taylor at PARC Charity Shop, 42 High Street, Rottingdean, BN2 7HR; cathytaylor57@hotmail.com. May I take this opportunity to thank all my readers for their continued interest and comments throughout the year and wish you all a Happy Christmas and a Healthy and Prosperous 2015. Perhaps I may meet you enjoying a bracing seasonal stroll along the Undercliff Walk!

Let Them Entertain You Part 7
Christmas and New Year Parties
Whether you have been charged with organising a Christmas bash for your business and its employees, a festive gathering for family and friends, or a New Year’s Eve party for your venue or club, there’s still time to get things organised. Saltdean based entertainment agency First & Foremost Entertainment Ltd has already helped many local businesses, venues and individuals alike as Christmas celebrations and the Office Party Season draws ever closer. But even now, it’s still not too late for you to put together a great Festive Celebration of your own. So what types of entertainment are most popular as Christmas & New Year’s Eve fare, and what tips are there for creating a successful event? We asked the experts ... “There is a vast amount of choice available for Christmas entertainment, but traditionally there are certain elements that fit the bill perfectly, which we are asked for time and time again”, explains Chris Neilson, Artistic Director at First & Foremost Entertainment Ltd. “These range from Discos, Pianists, Swing Singers, Magicians and Bands, through to Tribute Acts, Harpists, Firework Displays and Caricaturists.” Some performers and artists often have what is referred to as a “Christmas Set”, which means that some of their act, if booked for a Christmas party, will have a festive theme. For example, discos will play seasonal “floor fillers” and well loved Christmas songs, pianists can switch from background music to a festive party sing-a-long as the evening progresses, and magicians as you would expect, always have something special up their sleeves! Regardless of the type of entertainment however, the one thing that everyone is looking for these days is quality and of course, good value for money. In this case, rather than dividing your party budget rigidly between competing elements, we suggest dividing it in order of priority, remembering that without music or entertainment, a party is just a group of people in the same room!
Finally, if you are holding a ticketed charity or fund raising Christmas Dinner or New Year Party, having professional entertainment on board is likely to attract more guests, allows you the ability to charge more per head, and in doing so, increases the percentage going to the good cause. For more no obligation advice or to book entertainment for your Christmas or New Year Party, contact First & Foremost Entertainment Ltd. Local Therapist
Myofascial Release Penny Koster, Holistic Pain Therapist Hi my name is penny I work from my home in Saltdean I have a beautiful log cabin in my garden where I work from, it is an incredibly relaxing and gentle space. I have been a therapist for many years I have a lot of different qualifications and training, but the therapy I am most passionate about and know first‐hand works completely is myofascial release,
Myo-fascial is the connective tissue which joins everything together, covers everything, fills all the gaps holds you together, it has the memory of your life, it relays messages to your brain faster than the nervous System, every single thing that happens to you in your life whether it be good or bad is stored in your subconscious and your fascial system, The fascia is like a giant web made up of collagen, elastin and ground substance it covers you from top to toe with no orifices unlike your skin, it moves constantly within your body, it penetrates covers protects every organ, muscle, ligament, tendon, bones everything- we are fascia, scar tissue is damaged fascia that has gone hard and dehydrated, that is why generally women get more lower back problems then men because they have hysterectomies, C-sections and end up with fascia that is damaged, dehydrated and hard (scar tissue) so no longer moves and consequently pulls on areas like the lower back, fascia can become hardened dehydrated and stop moving and therefore cause problems, discomfort, pain, disease for many many different reasons I generally call it life. Another example because we are one complete unit everything is connected you could have a pain in your shoulder and the pain could possibly originate in your lower back, or maybe your neck or both. Myofascial release is being called the missing link and I passionately believe this to be true, I believe in the not too distant future everyone will be having these treatments. The cause of discomfort pain is the collagen layer of the fascia, this is the layer that has to be released from its stuck dehydrated no longer moving position! I am highly trained in myofascial release I am trained to Body read to know where the problem is and then to un-stick it. The whole world
needs to know about this treatment! I feel very passionately that everyone should understand how it works and as much as possible be able to do it to themselves and each other. There is no such thing as 'I have that pain because I'm getting old' No-one needs to have pain! Exceptions being if you break a leg or have an accident et cetera, I give these treatments which are extremely powerful but at the Same time very gentle, I also educate people so that they can self-care in the future and when they have a pain they understand why it's happening, and what they can do about it, ABSOLUTELY NO ONE HAS TO BE IN PAIN. Everyone is different sometimes it takes longer than others, sometimes it's instant. If you're interested in having a treatment and want to learn more about myofascial release and myself please go to www.trigger-points.me.uk or phone me on 07951 117826

Neighbourhood Watch
Neighbourhood Watch update Saltdean, Rottingdean & Ovingdean are making it easy pickings for the opportunist criminal… Over several months there have been numerous reports of cars being targeted and despite NHW and the Police sending out several messages this is still happening! The large majority of these cars have once again been left unlocked!! We are wondering if all the incidents have been reported as we do know that several residents have been too embarrassed to report it to the Police. Why make it easy? It takes a couple of seconds to check if your car is locked! Remember your car alarm will not be activated if left unlocked and your insurance would be invalidated. If possible put your car in the garage - but still remember to lock it! No apologies for once again giving some advice on having a safe and happy Christmas. ● Don't leave packages visible in the car Remember to lock it.
● Don't put empty boxes out to recycle that advertise the new laptop etc! ● Be careful of your purse/wallet at all times. Ladies: wear a bag with a strap you can place over your head and shoulders and face the opening towards your body. Gentlemen: Leaving your wallet in your back pocket can easily be 'picked'. ● Never put bags on the floor of a shop while you try on shoes or look for a different size garment. ● Hide your pin number when using an ATM machine and be extra vigilant of who is around you. Criminals are clever - but that doesn't mean we can't be that one step ahead of them. Happy Christmas to you all! For more information about NHW contact Linda Hood Secretary 01273 306441 email: nhw.sro-sec@hotmail.co.uk

Message in a bottle A Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions supported initiative In an emergency time can be of the essence in saving lives and ensuring a good outcome. Emergency Services need to be able to assess and assimilate a situation as quickly as possible. The Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions supported Message in a Bottle initiative aims to provide easily found and vital information when it is needed most. What is it? A simple idea designed to encourage people to keep their basic personal and medical details on a standard form and in a common place – the fridge!
The displayed stickers alert the emergency services that valuable information is available to enable them to deal with any emergency faster. All the emergency services support the scheme.
What does it do? It saves the emergency services valuable time if they need to enter a property in an emergency by both helping to establish your identity, and notify any special medication or allergies. Who is it for? Anyone: while focused on more vulnerable people, the scheme can benefit anyone, in the event of an accident or sudden illness at home. What’s in the bottle? A form you fill in with your name, medicines, allergies and relatives’ contact details. And also two green stickers. (There is a space provided on the form to add a photo in cases where two or more people use the scheme in the same household and confusion could occur.) What do I have to do? Fill in the form, put it in the bottle. Put the bottle in your fridge. Put one green sticker on the outside of the fridge door and the other green sticker on the INSIDE of your house door. What do I have to do next? Relax, in the knowledge you have done all you can to assist the emergency services should they be needed, which we hope they won’t be. The only one thing left to do is to update the form if your medication or other details change. How does it work? Each bottle contains - an information leaflet and stickers for placing on the fridge door and the inside of the front door. Participants fill in a leaflet with personal details including doctor, contact number for emergencies, any ailments, medication, and allergies. (You need only fill in as much as you are comfortable with.) The completed leaflet is then put a small plastic bottle and placed in the fridge.
