Last month’s article on Saltdean & Rottingdean Badminton Club has created a great deal of interest, The organiser of the club, Skye Samuelson, has asked us to let readers know that they need to contact her to book a place as they now have a waiting list: 07900 705248 or skye.samuelson@brighton-hove.gcsx.gov.uk

This month there is more news from the Lions, what particularly stood out to me were the 90 Christmas lunches they were able to serve to local senior citizens in December, this is helping people on a big scale. We make this possible by supporting the Lions fairs or joining in their organised events, so well done everyone. See page 61 for more information.

Computer tips from Dolphin Computer Upgrades Computer Tips & Advice 77

Ransomware As fast the security professionals manage to keep up with the criminals, the hackers are forced into more inventive ways of conning the innocent. The latest, “trendiest” way that underground criminals are scamming cash from the pockets of innocent victims is through the use of Ransomware. So what is Ransomware, and is there anything that you can do to protect yourself against it? If when you start up your computer you’re greeted with a big red image, demanding that if you don’t pay £200 to an unknown party in the next 24-hours, everything you know and love on your computer will be erased, and gone forever, you’ve got Ransomware. As of mid-2015, a reported £12 million has been stolen by hackers using Ransomware and the total will be way above this now. In addition, over a third of UK businesses, both large and small, say they have been victims of ransomware. Back. Up. Everything. At its core, ransomware exploits people’s unwillingness to back up their most precious data and files onto a separate hard drive or to an encrypted cloud system that is independent from their main PC or network.

Having a paid for, up to date anti-virus will also help to keep you up with the latest in defence that the security firms can provide. And if you do get infected? DO NOT PAY UP! We are unaware of anyone who has paid up but are pretty sure that such petty minded criminals aren’t then going to unlock your computer – why should they when they know they can tap you again? We have experience of getting rid of Ransomware but as above, make sure your data is protected as best you can in the first place as you don’t want to risk losing that which is unique to you.

Osteopathy tips

Bridgeford’s Best Bites:

Sprained Ankle A medical condition where ankle ligaments become overstretched, partially torn or totally torn. This happens with sharp movements like turning or rolling the foot. The lateral ankle sprain, where the foot is inverted, rolling out to the side with inside arch facing upwards, damaging one or more ligaments on the outside of the ankle is one of the most common sports injuries or occurs on a night out falling off high heels! Anatomy: The structure of the bones, muscles and ligaments inside the ankle is more stable, making lateral (outside) sprains more common. Ligaments are strong elastic bands of tissue that connect bone to bone. In walking most weight is placed on the outside of the foot when striking the ground, naturally causing inversion of the ankle joint. The talofibular ligament, connecting the talus foot bone to the fibula lower leg bone is most commonly injured; the calcaneofilbular, connecting calcaneum foot bone to fibula can also be injured in more severe sprains as well as the anterior and posterior tibiofibular ligaments connecting tibia leg bone to fibula. Symptoms: Pain, swelling, tenderness and bruising around the joint. An overstretched ligament has microscopic tissue damage, with less severe symptoms; weight bearing is possible though not running or jumping. A partial tear of ligaments is more severe causing more severe symptoms and affecting weight bearing so crutches are needed. A complete tear produces even more severe symptoms and may require surgical repair and /or a walking boot or splint plus crutches. Causes: Sporting injuries, sudden change in speed or direction, falls, collisions, over-reaching. Excessive force through the ankle joint causes the damage. Diagnosis: Your doctor will check for symptoms as well as testing movement, joint stability and weight bearing ability; and ask if you are taking anti-coagulants that reduce the blood’s ability to clot. In severe cases X-ray or MRI may be needed and to rule out fracture. Treatment: This should be started immediately. PRICE is often used: Protection, Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation. Pain mediation may be needed. Ibuprofen tablets can help reduce swelling and inflammation, though may delay healing if taken in the first 48 hours. Restorative exercises, gentle at first are important to maintain flexibility and strength and prevent muscle atrophy (wasting). An ankle brace or taping is helpful to prevent re-injury when returning to sports. Surgery in extreme cases. Avoid HARM in the first 72 hours: Heat, Alcohol, Running, and Massage. Prevention: Wear correct footwear, warm up properly before exercise and stretch to cool down afterwards. Do regular

strengthening and flexibility exercises, using proper technique; be aware that muscle tiredness can affect your ability to control movements accurately. Eat a healthy, balanced diet to keep muscles strong. Prevent falls by keeping house and garden clear of obstacles. Osteopathic/Manual Management: Gentle techniques to help reduce swelling and increase blood flow. Test function and flexibility of all joining ligaments and muscles; treat to improve strength and reduce tension, pain and swelling. Assess and treat fascial connections, reduce trauma to the tissues. Specific taping may be required for stability and support. Assess movement of spine and neck which can be compromised if walking badly due to pain/injury. Restorative exercises. Recovery time varies from a few weeks to months or years depending on severity and the individual. Preventing re-traumatising the injury is vital, especially with children who find it difficult to stay still and sports people. We are happy to advise you on your health matters and offer a free 15 minute joint and spinal check, without obligation. Local History - Part 45

Harvey’s Cross

High on the Downs, just over a mile north of Saltdean, in the vicinity of the long lost hamlet of Balsdean, stands a stone monument bearing the inscription: JOHN HARVEY ESQ. OF ICKWELL BURY IN THE COUNTY OF BEDFORD DIED SUDDENLY ON THIS SPOT ON THE 20TH DAY OF JUNE 1819.

‘Harvey’s Cross,’ as the memorial is known, fell into disrepair but the final straw was during World War Two when Canadian soldiers used the area for target practice. Local historian Douglas d`Enno and John Harvey`s descendants helped to raise £4,000 to restore the monument and in 1999 it was unveiled by Admiral Lindsay Bryson, the Lord Lieutenant of Sussex. Sadly since then the monument has become the victim of mindless vandalism. If you wish to enjoy the view from Harvey’s Cross yourself you may approach it from Rottingdean or Saltdean. From Rottingdean take Bazehill Road, passing Balsdean reservoir on your left descend towards the pumping station then turn right for the steep climb up to Pickers Hill. From Saltdean take the track past the Football Club then at Pickers Hill Farm bear right, climb steeply up to the brow of the hill and turn left along the wide track which runs between Telscombe and Balsdean. Our black and white undated photograph is courtesy of Rottingdean Preservation Society and shows some mushroom pickers chilling out at Harvey’s Cross!

It was erected in 1873 by the wealthy family of Colonel John Harvey of the 9th Lancers. We believe he died tragically in a riding accident in 1819 at the age of 48. Ironically, he had travelled to the Sussex Coast from his home in Ickwell, Bedfordshire, for his health. He was either staying with the Rottingdean vicar, Dr Hooker, or at Down House with Mrs Dealtry. He may have been riding with the Brookside Harriers whose Master was Dr Hooker from 1800-1820 but that is unlikely in June. His body was taken to Rottingdean and was attended by the servants of Mrs Dealtry of Down House. His funeral cortege included carriages for the mourners, who included Dr Hooker and Mrs Dealtry. It travelled to Bedford at a cost of £300…£13,000 in today’s money!

Saltdean Primary School History Project 2016 is exploring the1960's when the school opened. They are most anxious to contact anyone who was a pupil at the school in its early years from 1962. If you are happy to share your memories please contact Mike Laslett: mikelaslett@ntlworld.com, or 01273 271075. The children's finished project will be featured in a forthcoming edition of the Deans magazine!!

Your World Experience My name is Lisa Buros-Hutchins of Your World Experience, a travel company specializing in luxury travel and adventures around the world.

Now based in East Sussex, I originally moved to Paris from America with a dream of living ‘la vie parisienne’. Looking back now I admit it was a bit of a leap, not speaking French or knowing a soul, however I have always been absolutely fascinated by Paris and there was simply no place else at that time I wanted to be. Fast forward and I managed to make a life there, learn the language and work my way up to run a tour company that eventually grew to become one of the largest English-speaking tourist companies in Europe. Moving forward again I met and married an Englishman, moved to the UK and stepped down from the company I was running and entered into the incredible world of private tourism, founding Your Paris Experience in 2009 and expanding to Rome and London in 2011. In early 2014 I signed on with a US-

based high-end travel management company to become an independent European affiliate. With this new venture I now handle every aspect of my client’s travel around the world from flights and hotel arrangements to tours, events and itinerary planning. Whether it be for personal or corporate travel, VIP sporting and event attendance my “Your World Experience” team make it happen. I was recently asked what I most enjoy about my job and it has to be talking with my clients as we work through their trip, layer by layer. There is nothing more gratifying than to hear the excitement in their voice start to rise as they begin to realize the trip they have been dreaming of is very much within their reach. Happy Shopping! Shopping on line is a growing trend and more and more people are buying goods of every description this way. There can however be pitfalls! Read our top 10 tips for safe & successful purchases on line! 1. SHOP,SHOP,SHOP - If something seems too much of a bargain, it's probably poor quality or doesn't even exist. Always check payment pages are secure and log out when you've finished shopping on line. 2. AUCTION BARGAIN - When making a purchase from an auction website, use insured payment methods like PayPal and never do a bank transfer to people you don't know. Do all you can to check the seller or buyer are authentic. Look out for fake goods: they're illegal and cost livelihoods. 3) JUST THE TICKET - Buying gig or event tickets as a gift, or for yourself? To avoid fraud, buy only from official sources and never pay by direct transfer. 4) COME FLY AWAY ..... - Whether you're planning a break now or later in the year, make sure the holiday or flight is genuine by researching it thoroughly and check travel agents for an ABTA/ATOL number. 5) WHO'S ASKING? - Scam emails, calls, texts and posts are getting more clever and you're bound to get some during the year. Think twice before you get talked into anything, however busy you are. 6)YOUR PASSWORD IS YOURS. KEEP IT THAT WAY! - Passwords that are easy to guess, that you use for more than one account or that you share with others are a no-no!

7)SECURELY CONNECTED? Secure Wi-Fi is vital for your privacy. At home check your router security settings. Out and about never use free Wi-Fi hotspots when you are doing something that is private. 8)GREAT OFFER OR SUBSCRIPTION TRAP? - Don't sign up for 'free' or 'low-cost' trial goods without thoroughly reading the small print. You could be signing up for massive direct debits. 9)ATTACHMENTS/LINKS - Don't open attachments or click on links on emails you are not expecting as they could be scams. Also be careful with ecards as they can be fraudulent too. 10)AVOID THOSE VIRUSES - And we don't mean coughs and colds! Always have internet security (antivirus) software and apps switched on and updated (including any new phones and tablets you had as a gift). HAPPY SHOPPING! Physiotherapy advice

Avoiding aches & pains Barely a week goes by without us hearing about another study showing the dangers of a sedentary lifestyle: an increased risk of heart disease, diabetes, back pain and more. The “Get Britain Standing” campaign advises not sitting for more than four hours per day - while it's certainly true that going for a walk away from the desk is greatly beneficial, here are however some additional ways to keep moving without roaming too far. Staying mobile Perform these movements throughout the day to keep yourself limber: ● Stretch the neck by taking your ear towards your shoulder and holding for 30 seconds. Repeat both sides. ● Place your hands across your chest and twist round 10 times each way to loosen up the spine. ● Keep your extremities in good condition by doing thumb, finger, wrist and ankle circles – 10 times each direction. Staying strong Strengthening exercises aren't just about building muscles to show off on the beaches of Sussex. Stronger muscles also take the load off joints and can help with aches and pains. Try doing 2 lots of 10 of each of these: ● Squat by getting up and down out of your chair, squeezing your buttock muscles as you stand tall to help build buns of steel. ● Pull apart a resistance band held in front of you to strengthen your shoulder blade muscles. ● A light weight (such as a water bottle) can be held in the hand and curled up at the elbow to develop the biceps. For advice on any of these exercises or for hands-on treatment for specific injuries and conditions, you can get in touch with us at: admin@optimum-hcs.com or call 01234 339147. Our Brighton clinic is based in Longhill Sports Centre on the grounds of Longhill High School.

Myofascial Release Penny Koster, Holistic Pain Therapist Myofascial Release - the gentle release of connective tissue, I have a beautiful log cabin in my garden where I work from, it is an incredibly relaxing and gentle space. I have been a therapist for many years, I have a lot of different qualifications and training, but the therapy I am most passionate about and know first‐hand works completely is myofascial release, Myo-fascial is the connective tissue which joins everything together, covers everything, fills all the gaps holds you together, it has the memory of your life, it relays messages to your brain faster than the nervous System, every single thing that happens to you in your life whether it be good or bad is stored in your subconscious and your fascial system, The fascia is like a giant web made up of collagen, elastin and ground substance it covers you from top to toe with no orifices unlike your skin, it moves constantly within your body, it penetrates, covers, protects every organ, muscle, ligament, tendon, bones everything- we are fascia, scar tissue is damaged fascia that has gone hard and dehydrated, that is why generally women get more lower back problems then men because they have hysterectomies, C-sections and end up with fascia that is damaged, dehydrated and hard (scar tissue) so no longer moves and consequently pulls on areas like the lower back, fascia can become hardened dehydrated and stop moving and therefore cause problems, discomfort, pain, disease for many many different reasons I generally call it life. Another example because we are one complete unit everything is connected you could have a pain in your shoulder and the pain could possibly originate in your lower back, or maybe your

neck or both. Myofascial release is being called the missing link and I passionately believe this to be true, I believe in the not too distant future everyone will be having these treatments, The cause of discomfort, pain is the collagen layer of the fascia, this is the layer that has to be released from its stuck, dehydrated, no longer moving position! An Analogy if you step on a hosepipe the flow is impaired. I am highly trained in myofascial release, I am trained to Body read to know where the problem is and then to un-stick it.. The whole world needs to know about this treatment! I feel very passionately that everyone should understand how it works, and as much as possible be able to do it to themselves and each other. There is no such thing as 'I have that pain because I'm getting old' No-one needs to have pain! Exceptions being if you break a leg or have an accident et cetera, I give these treatments which are extremely powerful but at the Same time very gentle, I also educate people so that they can self-care in the future and when they have a pain they understand why it's happening, and what they can do about it, ABSOLUTELY NO ONE HAS TO BE IN PAIN. Everyone is different sometimes it takes longer than others, IT IS WORTH THE WAIT! If you're interested in having a treatment and want to learn more about myofascial release and myself please go to: www.trigger-points.me.uk or phone me on 07951 117826

Rottingdean & Saltdean Lions

Lions News This month we have an update on our recent, hugely successful fundraising activities, held in the last quarter of 2015 and how we were able to support a series of immensely enjoyable Senior Citizen Christmas lunches; also we have some news of some exciting fundraising initiatives for 2016. As 2015 drew to a close, we had a very successful run of fundraising. Our sponsored swim at Roedean School in October was well supported with new teams coming forward to support the event with £1,664.38 raised for the good causes chosen by the swimming teams and the Lions charities. During December, leading up to the festive season, Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions completed a series of successful fundraising activities: the Smugglers’ Night Auction raised £1,630, two street collections in Woodingdean (which Rottingdean residents may have discovered!) totalled £4,860, a collection at The Swan in Falmer raised £158 whilst the Smugglers’ Night street and pub collection netted just over £300 for the Lions good causes. We would like to thank all the local residents and traders for their generous support without which we wouldn’t have been able to raise so much to help those less fortunate than ourselves. These lucrative fundraising events enable us to provide, for example, the Senior Citizens Christmas lunches, which in December had two sittings with 90 senior citizens partaking at a net cost to the Lions of £866. During many of our fundraising events held in 2015, we received the welcome support of the Mayor of Brighton and Hove. She showed great interest in our activities, such as the Saltdean Gala, and the support we are able to give to local charities and community projects, for this backing we are extremely grateful.

Dead Funny Company will do for Rottingdean that Inspector Morse has managed for Oxford, only time will tell, Charity Concert with Juliette and the Romeos Also, planned for Rottingdean is a charity concert with Juliette and the Romeos. This is a popular group that plays the likes of Motown and Stax - they are a lively function band. Well known in the area, they will make a very welcome return. Autism Sussex Sensory Centre As a group we have close ties with Autism Sussex. One of their near term projects is the provision of an enhanced Sensory Centre. They are looking to raise funds for this important project that will be available to local people in the community. In support of this aim, we are planning to instigate a crowd funding initiative. We are quite excited by the prospect of this fundraising method and the support we hope to give to the fine organization that is Autism Sussex. Writing Competition Following on from the fundraising success of the eBook Pagan Justice*, the Lions are planning a writing competition for 2016. Prizes will be awarded with all proceeds going to local Lions Community Projects. * Pagan Justice by Jags Arthurson is available on Amazon and other eBook outlets with all profits going to the Rottingdean & Saltdean Lions Charity fund.

For 2016 we have some exciting fundraising events planned – some old some new – as described below:

For progress and finalised details of the above fundraising activities, please watch this space.

Murder Mystery with the Dead Funny Company We are planning the welcome return of the Dead Funny Company, and they are just that, to Rottingdean for another evening of murder and mayhem. This time there will be a different play and a new set of clues to solve. Whether the

Film Review from Cinema Saltdean

Far from the Madding Crowd Feisty and contemporary: Far From the Madding Crowd for the 21 Century Adaptations of books on to film inevitably invite comparisons between the two - and very often film comes second best. Newer film adaptations, where there has already been an iconic film, itself adapted from a beloved book, have a much harder job to convince, since there are two rivals to beat: but hey, film is film and books are books. ‘Far From the Madding Crowd’ is a prime example. The novel is outstanding and the 1967 John Schlesinger version was exceptional: but then with the combined talents of Julie Christie, Alan Bates, Terence Stamp and Peter Finch on offer, how could it fail? Add to this a screenplay by legend Frederic Raphael and success was assured. Enter the 2015 production of ‘Madding Crowd’ starring this time Carey Mulligan (‘Suffragette’, ‘An Education’, ’Never Let Me Go’) as Bathsheba. The story remains faithful to the book. It’s set in Victorian ‘Wessex’, where the independent and headstrong Bathsheba Everdene attracts three very different suitors: Gabriel Oak, a sheep farmer; Frank Troy, a reckless sergeant; and William Boldwood, a prosperous and mature bachelor. Carey Mulligan’s Bathsheba is bold, independent and feisty; qualities that were hinted at by Julie Christie back in the day. Matthias Schoenaerts takes on the Gabriel Oak character with a rustic, honest charm that is redolent of Alan Bates’ 1967 performance in the same role. Tom Sturridge (‘The Boat that Rocked’, ‘Effie Gray’) is Sergeant Troy; and Michael Sheen (‘Frost/Nixon’, ‘The Special Relationship’, ‘Midnight in Paris’) is Boldwood. Sheen’s emphasis is on disappointment and frustration as two other suitors get in the way of a union between him and Ms. Everdene: an interesting contrast to the Peter Finch interpretation, which was more about power and anger. ‘Wessex’ never looked better than here and, like the earlier Schlesinger, the atmosphere, beauty and charm of rural Victorian England is captured with what we can only imagine to be authenticity, thanks to the deft touch of director Thomas Vinterberg. If you are a fan of the book you will want to see what Vinterberg has made of it; and if you like or remember

the 1967 version, you will be intrigued as to how this 21 Century treatment lives up to expectations. For me the film is just gorgeous: I loved the book as well as John Schlesinger’s adaptation, so my prejudices against this version were unreasonably high but I was easily and quickly won over by near-perfect performances and masterly filmmaking. Even if you know how it all comes out, does it matter? This is about the journey rather than the destination. ‘Far From the Madding Crowd’ is screening at Cinema Saltdean on 23 February at 7:30pm, doors 7:00pm. All tickets £5.50, unreserved seating. There is a licensed bar – and we have even improved our sound system. Look out in March for ‘The Lady in the Van’ – brilliant! Jon, on behalf of the Cinema Saltdean volunteer
