We have had a few enquiries regarding the Lions Message in a Bottle scheme article which ran in the December 2014 edition, our update on page 61 should answer any questions as it now has full contact details.

Well for a while this month it was looking like we had space to include a puzzle page, however as we don’t like turning away articles or advertisers the space soon went. Please keep sending in local articles, we get fantastic support already from local people but it is always interesting to include new groups and features, remember that there is no charge for this so please feel free to contact us if you want to publicise your group, activity or even yourself! If you have an announcement or event to tell people about in a few words there is our other free section on page 45.

Barry Hinchliff Teaching Art in a South African Township 2007 - 2012 I arrived at the school, a rundown building with broken windows, no running water or electricity. The boys and girls were aged 13-17 years, Art is not part of their national curriculum. I had brought with me pencils, brushes, paint and pastels and scrounged plastic plates and containers from the hotel kitchen and bought a selection of fruit and veg to use in still life composition. There were four areas of the curriculum : object and figure drawing and painting , sketching outdoors and pattern making . I showed reproductions of other artists work and then started with a large still life group set on a table in the middle of the room. I also demonstrated with white chalk on the ancient blackboard, the use of light and shade, shape and line. We made a list of the words and phrases I used while teaching and wrote these on the board, using them as much as possible in ordinary conversation to extend their use of English.

Port Elizabeth has a municipal art gallery with a good collection of 20 century art but no township child had ever visited. I started to take each senior class to this gallery every time we visited. I have provided funds for this to continue each year and also money to buy clay and to pay for the firing in a local kiln. There is a teacher at the school who is very keen to continue the art work. I was given help with funding by, Jeanette Ewin, of Ovingdean who has set up a fund to help us buy art materials for all 5 schools in the township. If anyone would like to contribute to this fund (held by Saga Charitable trust), to provide paints and brushes, please contact me Barry Hinchliff: 01273 305229

The enthusiasm of the children was a joy to behold. They were polite and well behaved and produced a standard of work, equivalent to any UK school, to the amazement of their teachers and Principal. The children enjoyed the experience of a less formal classroom and being invited to express their ideas - a form of teaching new to them. We made a travelling exhibition which circulated the other 4 schools in the area. I also visited the other schools to encourage art teaching and to speak with other teachers.

Computer tips from Dolphin Computer Upgrades Computer Tips & Advice 65

Future Gadgets Do you recall the television programme Tomorrow’s World? It was a must for many families, gathering around the television to see the likes of Raymond Baxter and Maggie Philbin trying to predict, and to demonstrate, the future gadgets we may have in our homes. Sadly, Tomorrow’s World is no more, but there is something called CES which happens every year. The Consumer Electronics Show does pretty much what Tomorrow’s World did – it showcases the latest ideas and gadgets, hoping that the products demonstrated will become as main stream in our daily lives as the home computer, the mobile phone and the internet are now. So what were some of the top gadgets from this year’s CES that the “experts” feel we’ll all be using very soon? Automated Sweeper: Whilst we’re still a long way off the Jetson’s robot housekeeper, the Hom-Bot sweeper can be controlled by your phone, detects dust, notifies you when its dust bag is full and even has surveillance functions – ideal for catching the dog sleeping where he shouldn’t. Safer Driving – two new devices stood out this year: the Driver’s Texting Disabler and U-Wake. Both are fairly selfexplanatory; the first gadget is a small device that plugs into your car and prevents the driver from being able to text whilst on the move. The second is a wearable device that can detect your tiredness levels and alerts you using an app.

Home Security: No more “smile you’re on CCTV”, this system features cameras, an exterior light and an alarm siren. It can tell the difference between you just coming home and a visitor at the door, and filters out false alerts such as the cat wandering by. It gives you the ability to speak to those ringing the doorbell though your phone and allows you to customise the type of alerts you receive on your phone. Children’s Safety: A new Wi-Fi box was demonstrated that aims to keep our children safe online. Called Kidokey, this neat little box connects with your existing home router and creates its own network for your children. Your kids have access to a huge range of websites all of which have been checked and filtered to ensure that they are safe, and includes smart phone web access. Whilst we can’t be sure what gadgets will catch on and what will not, there are a lot of exciting developments out there at the moment.

Local History - Part 33

Mike Laslett

The South Coast Land and Resort Company

In recent articles you may have read about the entrepreneur Charles Neville and his ambitious plans to develop the land between Newhaven and Rottingdean by selling plots to potential home owners. His South Coast Land & Resort Company spawned many subsidiary companies.

Estate Office ( part of the D. d’Enno collection)

The Office here is the Rottingdean Heights Estate Office (photo reproduced with permission from Douglas d’Enno’s collection .) It advertises plots at £50 on which you could have a house built. Charles Neville’s company built homes on the purchasers’ plots with 2 bedroom bungalows for as little as £500 in 1923.

The alteration and repair department of Peacehaven Building and Supply Company built garages, greenhouses, garden sheds, hen houses and fences. Their store sold all necessary building materials for those building their own homes, from sand and bricks to baths and water tanks. Even second hand material was available. As well as carrying out general building works, the company staff erected utility poles and planted trees, as our pictures show. The Peacehaven Electric Light & Power Company was another arm of the estate company. The Company also supplied coal for those not enjoying electric heating. Yet another company was the Peacehaven Water Company. They provided a piped domestic water supply for £4 a year.

For those planning to build their own homes the company even published a book of designs for two storey houses and shops for 2/6d (12.5p!) It included such space- saving suggestions as creating a serving hatch between the kitchen and the sitting room and fitting a lid to the bath to create a low table or seat. It was generally recommended that two of the 100ft. x 25ft. plots be purchased in order that there would be sufficient access to both sides of the home.

The house here in Rottingdean Heights demonstrates how narrow a single plot could be, the bungalows either side being on double plots.

More than loft ladders Look up! And get more space at home for just £325. We'd all like more room at home. But not everyone can afford to move or extend. So what if there was a way to get extra space for just a few hundred pounds, ready to use in less than a day?

In truth, that space is already there. It's just not being used to its full potential.

We can also fit a draft-proof loft hatch if required from only £55.”

For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited on rare occasions; a precarious scramble across dusty beams with torch in hand, grabbing what's needed then clambering back past boxes filled with long-forgotten belongings. But that dark and dingy place is worth thousands. In fact, it takes up a third of the floorspace in an average home. So shouldn't we be making the most of it?

The price customers are quoted is the price they will pay, with no additional call out charges. Patrick provides a free guarantee on all parts and labour too. For a free survey and quotation with no obligation, contact More Than Loft Ladders now! Call 0800 035 9880 or visit the website at www.morethanloftladders.co.uk

And that's where More Than Loft Ladders (MTLL) comes in. Founded in Bolton six years ago, MTLL specialises in generating space by making our lofts easily accessible. The latest MTLL franchise is based in Brighton and is run by skilled local Patrick Aherne who says the company's no-frills approach is what most people are looking for. “We're not selling £15,000 loft conversions,” says Patrick. “This is a low-cost and simple alternative. For just £277 + VAT you can get a ladder that slides easily up and down, as well as a proper light and some boarding to make the space safe and secure.

Winter Warnings Quite frankly the most depressing part about winter isn’t the getting up in the dark; the getting home in the dark; or even the wrong kind of leaves on the tracks; it’s the fact that although every year at this time, newspapers and magazines are full of articles on home security and the steps that need to be taken in order to protect your home for winter. Yet, every year breaks-ins rise and even more people become just another crime statistic. And the reason? The good old “it won’t happen to me” attitude. But why risk it? Why suffer that heart-breaking moment when you walk into your house – or down your stairs in the morning – to find you’ve been broken into?

shutting all windows when you leave the house and leaving lights on when you go out. These steps might not stop the most determined of burglars, but the thing that needs to be remembered is that most burglaries are opportunistic crimes. And by removing the easy and obvious ways into your home then you really are taking great strides in stopping yourself and your family becoming victims.

We all have home insurance policies, which amongst other things, cover the cost of replacing items that could well be damaged or stolen during a burglary. But why do so many people stop there? Why don’t they take the steps needed to significantly reduce the odds of their homes being entered and these items being stolen in the So this winter, make sure you only have to moan about first place? It’s not like it costs the earth – especially the dark, the cold and the trains being delayed, and not when measured against what could be lost. about the fact you’ve been broken into. Heed the winter warnings, protect your home and hopefully come spring Locks on doors and windows should be upgraded to the annual rise in break-ins could well be old news. protect against forced entry, external security lighting should be installed and operational, and an alarm For more information about Neighbourhood Watch system installed. Local Group

Rottingdean Writers Twenty experienced and experimental writers meet fortnightly in the cosy back bar at The Rottingdean Club, where we share themed ‘homework’ set by that month’s chair and participate in creative exercises to improve our writing. We also enjoy discussions with We organise ourselves on co-operative principles. Members take turns to set the agenda and manage the meeting: this makes for constant variety and ensures that the role is never too burdensome. Our philosophy is to listen and to appreciate works of all genres – drama, fiction, memoir or poetry – and offer constructive criticism in a supportive atmosphere. Rottingdean Writers’ Group is endorsed by bestselling Sussex novelists, including best-selling crime writer Peter James, who said: I believe groups such as yours are important in so many ways. Whenever I finish a book the first thing I want to do is have people, whose judgement I trust, to read and comment on it. Rottingdean Writers are keen participants at Brighton Fringe, where we have been runners-up for The Latest best ‘literature’ award in the last two years. On 20 and 22 May 2015 we are hosting two new interactive workshops: Writers Allowed! at the fabulous English Language Centre in Hove, appropriately once home to the ‘Stephens’ Ink’ family. This year we are determined to win! We are delighted to welcome award-wining poet and fiction writer Catherine

Smith as our special guest. Catherine will be exploring the dark side of unbridled pleasure, featured in her latest publication The New Cockaigne. A limited number of tickets for this verbal feast of sexual, gastronomic and alcoholic excess are available from www.brightonfringe.org at £8 or £6 for concessions: refreshments included. We believe in building inspirational collaboratives with writers, artists and galleries, designing joint events and sharing creative learning. Rottingdean Whiteway Centre

53

The Whiteway Centre Rottingdean Rottingdean Whiteway Centre is well known to a large number of local residents. Many have attended classes for further education, others belong to clubs and societies which hold their regular meetings there, or bring their small children to the pre-school. The Centre was built in the 1970s as a meeting place for these activities. The local Village Hall having only one large room for hire was not adequate, it could not accommodate the numerous small groups in the local area needing a place for their social and educational activities. The Centre is run by an elected committee of Trustees who are jointly responsible for looking after it. They work voluntarily, encouraging anyone who would like to help with the organisation, to do so. It is a registered Charity; the trustees need to make sure that they run the Centre as economically as possible, taking every opportunity to raise enough money to cover expenses and keep a reserve for future repairs. There has been a Charity shop held for two weeks twice a year for many years. The last time this took place the results were disappointing. Many helpers gave up their time to run the shop, but the income did not warrant the time spent. There are now charity shops in all the local villages and towns, donations can go to a good cause all the year round. There is also the option of Ebay and car boot sales, so donations were fewer than before. On Saturday February 28th there will be a Tabletop/Jumble sale at the Whiteway Centre, Whiteway Lane, (opposite the Plough Inn) in Rottingdean from 10.00am til 4.00pm.

The whole Centre will be given over to it. There will be refreshments, tea, coffee and biscuits; you can bring your own sandwiches to eat on the premises. If you would like a table to sell your own goods it is ÂŁ10 per table, to raise money for yourself or your favourite Charity. Contact Sally Prince 01273 302 387. Centre opens at 8.00 am for setting up. The Centre is clean and attractive with plenty of toilet facilities and disabled access. Parking is available but limited. Please come by bus or park in the long term car park on the seafront, it's only a short walk through the village to the Centre.

Table Top Sale Rottingdean Whiteway Centre 28th February 2015. 10am - 4pm

Tables can be hired for ÂŁ10 If you have a local article to publish email editorial@deansmagazine.co.uk

Local Therapist - Penny Koster

Myofascial Release Penny Koster, Holistic Pain Therapist Hi my name is penny I work from my home in Saltdean I have a beautiful log cabin in my garden where I work from, it is an incredibly relaxing and gentle space. I have been a therapist for many years I have a lot of different qualifications and training, but the therapy I am most passionate about and know first‐hand works completely is myofascial release,

Myo-fascial is the connective tissue which joins everything together, covers everything, fills all the gaps holds you together, it has the memory of your life, it relays messages to your brain faster than the nervous System, every single thing that happens to you in your life whether it be good or bad is stored in your subconscious and your fascial system, The fascia is like a giant web made up of collagen, elastin and ground substance it covers you from top to toe with no orifices unlike your skin, it moves constantly within your body, it penetrates covers protects every organ, muscle, ligament, tendon, bones everything- we are fascia, scar tissue is damaged fascia that has gone hard and dehydrated, that is why generally women get more lower back problems then men because they have hysterectomies, C-sections and end up with fascia that is damaged, dehydrated and hard (scar tissue) so no longer moves and consequently pulls on areas like the lower back, fascia can become hardened dehydrated and stop moving and therefore cause problems, discomfort, pain, disease for many many different reasons I generally call it life. Another example because we are one complete unit everything is connected you could have a pain in your shoulder and the pain could possibly originate in your lower back, or maybe your neck or both. Myofascial release is being called the missing link and I passionately believe this to be true, I believe in the not too distant future everyone will be having these treatments. The cause of discomfort pain is the collagen layer of the fascia, this is the layer that has to be released from its stuck dehydrated no longer moving position! I am highly trained in myofascial release I am trained to Body read to know where the problem is and then to un-stick it. The whole world

needs to know about this treatment! I feel very passionately that everyone should understand how it works and as much as possible be able to do it to themselves and each other. There is no such thing as 'I have that pain because I'm getting old' No-one needs to have pain! Exceptions being if you break a leg or have an accident et cetera, I give these treatments which are extremely powerful but at the Same time very gentle, I also educate people so that they can self-care in the future and when they have a pain they understand why it's happening, and what they can do about it, ABSOLUTELY NO ONE HAS TO BE IN PAIN. Everyone is different sometimes it takes longer than others, sometimes it's instant. If you're interested in having a treatment and want to learn more about myofascial release and myself please go to www.trigger-points.me.uk or phone me on 07951 117826

Rottingdean & Saltdean Lions

Fundraising Initiatives 2015 The Lions are pleased to support the Message in a Bottle scheme, this month they describe how you or someone you know may benefit from this important project . Along with their fundraising Race Night, two new fundraising initiatives for 2015 are being introduced: a sponsored run or walk in and around the beautiful Deans and a literary competition building on the fundraising success of the thriller Pagan Justice penned by Jags Arthurson. Message in a Bottle This important scheme supported by the Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions Club mentioned in the December ’14 edition of The Deans Magazine, aims to provide easily found and vital information about an individual when it is needed most. It is a simple idea designed to encourage people to keep their basic personal and medical details on a standard form and in a common place – the fridge. This saves the emergency services valuable time if they need to enter a property by helping to establish a person’s identity with notification of any special medication or allergies. While focused on more vulnerable people the scheme can benefit anyone in the event of an accident or sudden illness at home. The bottles are provided free to the public, funded by the Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions Club. Bottles are available from local doctors’ surgeries, pharmacies and libraries and if you would like more information please see contact details listed below. This scheme has been proven to save lives, so if you or someone you know could benefit from this initiative, please do get in touch. Race Night - Saturday 7th March 2015 Please remember that next month, we have a Race Night at Rottingdean Public Hall, with doors opening at 7:00pm and the first race at 7:30pm. Entry is by prepurchased tickets which are £5 and accompanied children are free. There will be a licensed bar. There will be eight races with betting on a tote basis at £1 per go. Whether you attend or not you can own and name a horse in advance for £5. A bottle of champagne will be awarded to the winning owner of each race. Please call 07767 665 895 if you would like to own and name a horse for the evening and/or for entry tickets.

is very much at the planning stage at the moment, but is currently proposed to start at Saltdean Oval and continue to the bridle path that passes Saltdean United FC and out onto the downs. Once on the downs it will circulate the Deans and finish back at Saltdean Oval. Refreshments will be available in the Oval. It will be a spectacular route with some breathtaking scenery. For this event it is proposed that entrants will attract sponsorship. Fifty percent of monies raised will go to a charity selected by the entrant with the balance, minimum of £15, going to Lions Community Projects.
