Computer tips from Dolphin Computer Upgrades 101.

7

Time to Upgrade We’re bombarded with information about the latest security measures to such a degree that it can be tempting to bury our heads and pretend it won’t affect us – especially if it means doing yet more updates. The big scare story that broke at the beginning of the year wasn’t, in fact, a security breach – yet. “Spectre” and “Meltdown” were the names given to vulnerabilities that affected nearly every computer chip manufactured in the last 20 years – so that will include your computer. Microsoft et al took measures as quickly as they could to fix these flaws as best they could – most of these fixes will have involved updates to your computers, tablets and phones - and if you haven’t followed the prompts to update your systems we advise that you do. However, what has emerged is that for some people these updates have seen a noticeable, negative, impact in performance on their computers.

Microsoft admitted that PCs running older versions of Windows, or even just older Intel silicon, were having significant issues and that older PCs were hit the hardest, based on the way Windows was coded at the time. Microsoft’s summary on performance issues was: Windows 10 (2016+) | Microsoft doesn’t expect most users to notice a change as the percentages will be reflected in milliseconds. Windows 10 (2015 and older) | Some show more significant slowdowns and some users will notice a decrease in system performance. Windows 8 and Windows 7 | Most users will notice a decrease in system performance. This doesn’t mean that if you have an older machine you shouldn’t update – if you don’t you are more vulnerable now as the world, including the criminals, are aware of the flaws. What it does mean is that if your PC is older than a 2016 version it may be worth you considering replacing it.

A Simple way to overcome dementia communication barriers A leading dementia care centre in Seaford is keen to share its advice and successes in caring for people with dementia. Its February top tip for anyone caring for someone with dementia is to use a simple but very effective communication aid.

“It is important for us to understand how residents are feeling and these cards are a great help. They allow us to give a more focused standard of care and help to minimise misunderstandings and potential frustration for the resident.”

Clifden House Dementia Care Centre has implemented the use of simple but very effective aids for its residents. These are called ‘Communication Cards’.

Communication Cards are also very handy to use alongside everyday conversation to keep residents aware of how they are feeling and to let them know that it’s normal for them to have trouble communicating.

Communication Cards are pictorial representations of common emotions and needs, and have proven to be an exceptionally useful mechanism for residents - allowing dementia sufferers to quickly and easily express themselves clearly. A person with dementia can often have difficulty communicating. They can struggle to find the right words and frequently repeat words or become stuck on a certain syllable. This can be very frustrating and often distressing for dementia sufferers.

There are many free communication resources available online or, like Clifden House, you can purchase communication cards from www.theplaydoctors.co.uk. If you would more information or tips about communicating with dementia suffers cards visit www.clifdenhouse.co.uk or contact Clifden House on 01323 896460 or email office@clifdenhouse.co.uk

‘I feel’ expressions are the first set of communication cards and includes faces and words to describe how they are feeling. Examples of emotions on the cards include worried, excited, sad and cross. Nial Joyce of Clifden House said: “Members of staff at Clifden House carry communication cards with them. They find them useful for engaging with residents and help overcome communication difficulties. If you have a local article to publish email info@deansmagazine.co.uk

Osteopathy tips

Bridgeford’s Best Bites:

Applied Kinesiology Many people think that Applied Kinesiology (AK) is a treatment, whereas it is actually a diagnostic tool that is used in combination with other standard methods of diagnosis to assess aspects of health. What is AK? AK is a non-invasive system of evaluating how a person’s body functions using manual muscle testing as a feedback mechanism. Used correctly, it should help to evaluate the best form of treatment or therapy for an individual patient. Basically, when a muscle does not test as functioning properly, the practitioner will investigate the reason and apply the remedy that restores normal muscle test response to help the patient. I tell my patients it is like we are using the muscle responses to have a conversation with their nervous system, as muscle testing is primarily concerned with neuromuscular function and how it relates to structural, chemical and mental physiology. Treatments may involve joint mobilisation, myofascial techniques, cranial techniques, acupuncture meridian therapy, clinical nutrition, dietary management and various reflex procedures. After treatment, it is possible to retest to evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment on the individual. Origins of AK: Doctor George Goodheart, a USA chiropractor first introduced manual muscle testing to evaluate body function in 1964. Knowledge and research into AK has grown considerably since then, expanding its dimensions as a diagnostic tool of bodily dysfunction, modifying and evolving techniques and introducing new ones. Even in the early days of AK, it was apparent how the use of many treatment methods in Osteopathy, Chiropractic, Acupuncture and Homeopathy produced improved neuromuscular function, which could be directly measured using AK. Triad of Health: In AK, balance of the major health areas is represented by each side of an equilateral triangle representing structural, chemical and mental factors of health. A person with ill health will have an imbalance in one or more aspects, distorting the triad. Each aspect can affect the other, e.g. a chemical imbalance can affect organs such as the gut or liver and affect also mental and physical health. AK helps the practitioner to evaluate the triad’s balance and apply the therapy towards creating a balance on all sides to restore health. What can be Treated? The basic structural issues that may take you to a healthcare practitioner, e.g. back, neck and joint pain, sci-

atica, headaches and migraine, postural abnormalities, disc injuries, nerve irritation, acute onset and minor sports injuries. Additionally, other functional and systemic disorders may be addressed, including hormone related issues, fatigue, irritable bowel syndrome, sleep pattern and stress related disorders. What to Expect in an AK Treatment? When visiting an AK practitioner, expect to be involved. The practitioner will first take a detailed medical history and perform the standard diagnostic tests, followed by a variety of muscle tests to assess areas of dysfunction. They will test for basic mechanical defects, the possible connection of visceral (gland or organ) dysfunction, stress levels in the body and where indicated cranial and pelvic distortion and toxicity/allergy problems. The practitioner and patient work together during manual muscle testing, giving the patient the opportunity to be actively involved in their treatment process. This helps the patient to have greater understanding of their treatment process and thus adopt a greater sense of responsibility towards their health; they can also experience the feedback via the muscle testing. AK uses the principal that the body is a self-maintaining, self-correcting mechanism and its innate wisdom knows what is wrong; the practitioner needs to ‘ask’ the right questions to discover the nature of the imbalance and watch the body’s response when it says ’yes please’. Treatment may involve a combination of structural work, guidance in self- treatment, nutritional support, remedies and treatment to aid stress related problems. We are happy to advise you on your health matters and offer a free 15 minute joint and spinal check, without obligation. Friends of Beacon Hill

Beacon Hill Nature Reserve News Year’s Resolution gone awry ? Didn’t make a New Year’s Resolution ? Want some gentle exercise along with good company ? Looking for inspiration to make your life feel more complete ? Well have we got the thing for you……. Friends of Beacon Hill are a merry bunch of local folk who enjoy the feel good factor of assisting in the conservation of our lovely Chalk Grassland. Not only will you leave our sessions feeling you’ve done some gentle exercise in the fresh air but will have all sorts of new information whizzing around your heads. Conversation on our workdays is as far reaching as it is varied as we have such a diverse group of volunteers. There is always amusement to be had along with a song or two. Why not take a walk over on a 2ⁿ Wednesday or 4 Friday to see what we’re all about. We are still happily bashing away at the scrub given this is our main winter activity. We are working on a particularly stubborn patch that has been running wild for far too long. The section wasn’t grazed as too brambley for the sheep who would’ve got tangled up then for a season or 2 it was mechanically cut which just lead to stronger/faster regrowth. This, along with the probability of the remaining tufts hurting the delicate hoofs of our fleecy friends, has lead the charge for manual intervention. It takes time though and, whilst we have had assistance from the BHCC Roving Rangers (a group who arrive en-masse to help out), we still need more able hands to make the work lighter. If you can spare a few hours a couple of times a month please come out and join us.

We do sometimes take a break from scrubbing and to this end infilled the top steps in the North Woods as, due to constant footfall, the soil had bedded in making them rather too tall. Job done and our next project will be to replace the whole of the steps that run up through the woods from Court Ord Road. The Annual Beacon Hill Clean up is 10:00 on Saturday 17 February - litter pickers provided. We meet 2ⁿ Wednesday and 4 Friday of each month at 10AM at the Beacon Hub Cafe Kiosk. Tools are provided but please wear sturdy shoes/boots/gloves and if you have secateurs bring them along. If you would like further information we can be found at :E-mail : FOBeaconHill@gmail.com Telephone : 01273 983000 Facebook : www.facebook.com/beaconhillrottingdean

Along with the brambles we also pop the saplings that are springing up and spreading from the woods. Our new Tree Poppers are working a treat and the joy of pulling a long root (sometimes the root is 4 times the height of the actual plant) has to be experienced to be believed. Just take a look at the gleeful face Russ, one of our regulars, holding his root aloft.

The Team

Russ masters a stubborn root.

War time action in the Deans

About 10.30 on the morning of 18 December 1942 the sirens sounded to alert the residents of Rottingdean to the possibility of an air raid. This time it was no false alarm. The schoolchildren went into the shelter in the playground. After machine gunning streets in Brighton, a German Dornier 217 aircraft dropped its load of 500-pound bombs prior to returning home.

Garden of Tudor Close Hotel

St Margaret’s Flats today

The first bomb scored a direct hit on St Margaret’s flats. Fortunately, most of the flats were unoccupied but there were a few slight injuries among those who remained. The bomb hit the water tanks causing the water to run down The Gap to the beach and the bomb finally lodged in the lift shaft. As a consequence, some of the upper part of the building had to be demolished.

The next bomb had a less dramatic effect, landing in the garden of the Tudor Close Hotel, causing some damage and injury. The final bomb which had impact on property fell on St Aubyn’s School Playing Field, demolishing The Vicarage in Steyning Road while the Vicar, Rev. White, was shopping with his wife in Brighton.

St Margaret’s Flats December 1942

War reserve PC Harold Stone aged 40 had recently transferred from The Metropolitan Police and lived with his wife and daughter in Stamner Avenue, Saltdean. Sadly, he was on traffic duty at the crossroads and guiding people to safety when he was struck and died from his injuries. One Dornier 217 was shot down three miles off Brighton by a New Zealand pilot who gave chase after he spotted it a few miles south of Brighton In the High Street there was much shop glass broken and stock strewn everywhere.

See us online at www.deansmagazine.co.uk

Only the maid was at home. Scratched and shaken, she was quickly got out of the debris by ARP workers, together with the Vicar’s pet Sealyham Terrier, who was only slightly injured. Sir Roderick and Lady Jones were able to accommodate the Vicar and his wife at The Elms.

Saltdean was not without its share of the action. In 1940 a ME109 piloted by 19-year-old Karl Raisinger crashed and he was held by the Home Guard until he could be taken to Brighton Police Station and ultimately Chichester Barracks. In 1943 a grislier sight awaited locals when a Dornier 217 crashed in flames west of Homebush Avenue after a bombing raid in Brighton and the crews’ remains were found scattered in the fields.

Neighbourhood Watch

Community Speedwatch Over a long period of time Neighbourhood Watch have received complaints about vehicles speeding down roads in our area and creating potentially dangerous situations for residents. A Community Speedwatch group has been established to help address this problem. The group has been set up by the police, uses a speed measuring device provided by the police and is authorised to monitor vehicle speeds on our roads. During a monitoring session, vehicles travelling at speeds in excess of the speed limit plus 10% plus 2mph are recorded and reported. These details are passed through to the police. Warning letters are sent to those caught offending with an escalating process for repeat offenders. These reports also allow the police to identify any vehicles in which they have a special interest. This is an extremely worthwhile exercise that helps keep our roads safe. Roadside monitoring

sessions are undertaken by a group of four Speedwatch volunteers and last for one hour. There is currently a small group of volunteers who undertake this monitoring. With more volunteers the group would be able to cover more sessions on more roads. All volunteers are required to undertake a short online training program to gain police accreditation. The Saltdean, Rottingdean and Ovingdean Neighbourhood Watch try to act on complaints and information received from residents, but to do this effectively more volunteers are needed. To help keep our community a safer place please consider giving an occasional hour of your time to this worthwhile project. If you feel that you could give the odd hour here and there to help make our roads a safer place for everyone then please contact Richard Morris on 01273 387699 or email richard.morris011@outlook.com.

Local Slimming World Group

Slimming World News Two years ago Ken and Joanna walked into Woodingdean Slimming World. Joanna had tried before but was so scared what people might think of her, she had asked Ken to go. Joanna had gained weight over the years ,through pregnancy and other life struggles. She came thinking people would judge her and was self conscious. Natalie the Consultant at group said " I could see this couple looking out of their comfort zone". Joanna is vegetarian and wondered how that worked at Slimming World. Ken still ate meat. They soon realised they could eat casseroles, stews, tagines using fresh food.

Joanna has completed a 50km walk, and abseiled the Spinnaker Tower for charity. She really is Wonder Woman. As a family they have also made changes and part of that has included adopting 2 rescue dogs from Spain, which are now walked everyday as part of their fitness routine. If you would like to find out more about losing weight and feeling great come along to group at St.Patrick's Church, Broad Green, Woodingdean.

Weeks went on and Joanna began to realise that her input into group was just as important as everyone else and her confidence grew, she chatted shared, and became a great part of group. She still wasn't very good at receiving praise. After a while Joanna realised she was pregnant, she was worried about gaining weight! But this time was different Joanna said " I knew I wanted to keep going. Joanna went on to have a daughter and when she gave birth she had not gained a single lb! Joanna has now lost 6 1/2 Stone, and is at Target. Whilst transitioning from being a Vegetarian to Vegan. She still attends group every week and is now a vital member of the Social team and a massive support to all members (and me) who come through that door, as she still knows how that felt. Let's not forget about Ken, the hubby , the support , well he has gone on to lose 3 Stone and also is now a Target member, and a part of the Social team, he too has made other changes, he is now vegetarian.

Local Pilates Teacher - Jan Davies Hello my name is Jan and I’ve been teaching Body Control Pilates mat work classes for 16 and a half years (since 2001) and I teach/have taught people of all ages, & levels of fitness and health. Last year at least 3 people joined my classes as beginners over the age of 80! A true sign of an aging population and the need to keep mobile with it – together with the highest levels of safety. I run structured courses with a maximum of 12 people /class so everyone has plenty of attention and a wealth of my experience to tap into and ask as many questions as they like! No-one has to do anything which doesn’t suit, nor does anyone work through any level of pain or discomfort. Everyone’s needs can be, and are accommodated and people are encouraged to learn to listen to their bodies and work with them intelligently by observing and feeling feedback on all levels. Everyone is taught what we are trying to achieve in pilates, what we are trying to use (musclewise) and why it is important not to use the wrong (overworked) muscles predominantly in the superficial back and what it feels like when this happens. That way we ensure correct use of muscles for our movements, and the correction of imbalanced muscle use generally together with the benefits of improved flexibility, posture, strength around all joints in the body,

better breathing and generally feeling better about ourselves through the mind body connection. I have a long standing following of clients who have been with me for many years (in Brighton and Winchester where I started my business in 2001) and they all have their own reasons and place for pilates in their lives – it may be the only time they get to themselves in a hectic week, it may help them to manage body issues such as back issues etc, it ticks the exercise box once a week, - whatever it is it’s personal to them. Some people practice very regularly and gain huge benefits, some don’t, but may be doing a selection of other physical activities during the week when they can use their pilates principals and others simply come once a week because it works for them. It doesn’t matter. So do come and give it a go! My local 10 week beginner course runs on a Monday at 3pm in Rottingdean Village Hall, and my local experienced class at 2pm in the same venue. I also teach in Kemptown and Hanover in Brighton where people often make up missed classes. Everyone completes an enrolment form prior to attending classes so we’ve had a chance to discuss any health issues, and I offer a special discount price for 1:1 sessions prior to attending beginner courses of £35 for an hour (generally held in Brighton). For more information so contact me (by text or voice call) on 07904 187257, or on my contact form on my website www.movementandhealth.co.uk , or email me jan@movementandhealth.co.uk

Event at the Grange, Rottingdean

Rottingdean Art Club Exhibition Our exhibitions always attract a large number of visitors - and will do so once again. Do come along between the 13 February to 4 March and see our new work and meet some of us. The artists in the Rottingdean Art Club have an exciting and varied range of work. There is bound to be something to interest you - whether large or small, landscapes or abstracts, portraits, animals and collages – some colourful, others in more muted shades. If you draw, paint in any medium, and would like to meet fellow artists why not visit us at the Whiteway Centre on Wednesday afternoons from 2.00pm. New term starts on 10 January. From time to time we have a tutor to demonstrate their techniques. This often inspires us to try a new direction to our usual work. Getting out of our comfort zone widens our horizons! There is a modest annual fee if you decide to join us - but you do get free refreshments and an opportunity to discuss your work with other members. We are a friendly group and constructive criticism can be helpful. For more information contact our Secretary. Tel. Piyali 01273 3046223 email – Pilyali.b.m@gmailcom

Local News

Local Photographer Melanie Straw a keen amateur photographer from Saltdean has submitted this dramatic photograph of the Saltdean beach underpass. She has just started out and adds that she takes ‘out and about’ photo’s as her hobby. Interestingly it is a different view of the same tunnel we used on our January 2010 launch cover:

Saltdean Swimmer makes GB Team Fabienne Andre (known as “Fabs”) of Saltdean, Brighton has been selected to swim for the GB Team at the CP World Games in Spain, this summer. Fabienne will be joining other para-swimmers and athletes at a CP showpiece event, and the challenge of intensive training and competing will be running alongside her studies, as she completes the second year of her physiotherapy degree, at Brunel University. The games are not funded by a sporting body, so all athletes selected to represent the GB Team are required to raise a set amount of money to cover their flights, accommodation, training and specialised kit. Without these funds, Fabs will struggle to get onto the starting blocks and dive in to the competition. In her usual style though, she is embracing the challenge totally, and has set up a Go Fund Me page, to reach as many potential sponsors as possible. Details are available here: https://www.gofundme.com/competing-in-the-cp world-games She started swimming at the relatively late age of 14, after a major operation on her leg to correct issues re-

lating to her Cerebral Palsy, and it was noted she had a natural ability in the water. Two years later, she had an official classification assessment, was designated specific classifications for different strokes, and was then free to race at certified events. She has now swum for her club, Mid-Sussex Marlins, at local, county, regional, national and international levels, and the step up to the World Games is justifiable reward for the late finishes and morning swims, when the rest of the world is sleeping. Para-swimmers and athletes have found a new level of acknowledgement and understanding of their sports in recent years, with a shift in the public’s perception to realise that they are elite athletes, in their chosen sport. Fabs is happy to discuss the event, her fundraising, and her journey to this point with all interested parties, as she seeks to promote the CP World Games, and to ensure her successful participation in the event.

Cinema Saltdean Film Review

Hampstead

Cert. 12a

No riff-raff! On a recent holiday in Spain we were sitting watching two men putting up a sign for their restaurant. The job of one of them was to do the work: the job of the other was to hold all the bits that the first one needed to do the job… We didn’t intervene. I’m no expert at putting up signs, even when it was obvious things could have been done differently (If not better). People who have found a way of doing something that suits them, a way to get along, are often best left alone, benefiting from not having the interference of others. Which brings us to ‘Hampstead’. ‘Hampstead’ is a comedy described by the critics as ‘funny’ ‘uplifting’ and ‘full of heart’. ‘Hampstead’ is based on the true story of Harry Hallows, the so-called ‘Hermit of Hampstead’, who lived in a shack on the eponymous Heath for 12 years. Comedies such as Alan Bennett’s ‘Lady in the Van’, brought to life by Maggie Smith, probably interest us by being about people living on the edge of society, doing something different. ‘Hampstead’ is blessed with two such characters. Firstly, Donald Horner (Brendan Gleeson: ‘The Guard’, ‘In Bruges’ and ‘Calvary’) whose character is based on Harry Hallows, is living as much ‘off-grid’ as it’s possible to be. After living in his shack for seventeen years, he is threatened one day with eviction, when property developers see the potential of building on the Heath. Donald’s home is in the way and so, locally, he becomes a cause celebre. Support for him comes from different sources and one unexpected quarter in particular.

Will romance blossom between the unlikely pair? Will Donald get evicted? How will Emily stop the advances of the well-intentioned James? This is a surprising role for Brendan Gleeson, known for much heavier roles. Diane Keaton is a long way from ‘Annie Hall’; however, she turns in a similarly scatty performance. If you are in the mood for a light and fluffy comedy to brighten a February evening – this is for you. A footnote: The real Irish Hermit of Hampstead was granted a deed to his half-acre plot of land in 2007. The plot was valued at £2 million. Harry busied himself doing odd jobs for the community including working for the Director Terry Gilliam He lived there until February 2016 when he died. There was no American widow in sight.

Tuesday March 27 is a special event with a screening of ‘Brighton Symphony’ and a Q&A with both the Director and the film’s Composer. Watch this space! Jon

Our second “off-piste” character is American widow Emily Walters (Diane Keaton: ‘Something’s Gotta Give’, ‘Manhattan’ and ‘Annie Hall’). Emily lives in a proper house - well, in the loft of a proper house: her middle-class friends are into keeping things “nice”, being more concerned with the betterment of their already swanky Hampstead enclave. As Basil Fawlty might have said: ‘No riff raff’. Emily feels at odds with her fellow neighbourhood committee ‘friends’. She also has money worries. To alleviate the latter - and stepping into the role of self-appointed matchmaker - Fiona (Lesley Manville, born in Brighton: ‘Topsy-Turvey’, ‘Maleficent’ and ‘Phantom Thread’) attempts to ‘fix her up’ with her accountant friend James. James is played by Jason Watkins (‘W1A’, ‘Taboo’ and ‘Line of Duty’). This relationship is doomed to failure - and you’ll see why, when you watch Jason’s performance as he plays the moon-faced, wellintentioned, but somehow repulsive accountant. You see what I mean about ‘interfering’. A pair of binoculars saves Emily from a fate worse than life with an accountant. (No offence to any accountants reading this – I’m sure you’re very nice people.) She spies Donald, from her lofty outlook, in his natural habitat on the Heath.

Lions February update This month we look forward to various activities we will be involved in during 2018. I am pleased to report that our fundraising activities have recently supported, for example, the Senior Citizens Christmas lunches, which in December had two sittings with 72 senior citizens partaking at a net cost to the Lions of £736. These meals were thoroughly enjoyed. We are always looking to find people that need help in our community. If you know someone in need please do ask them to get in touch with us so that we can see if we can help. It will soon be time to have a go at winning one of our Easter Eggs. These can be located in various venues around the Deans in the two or three weeks running up to Easter and you have a 1 in 100 chance to win a large egg for just £1. With such good odds, please pop along and have a punt.

Whilst being immensely successful events they are labour intensive and voluntary help at these events is always welcome. If you know a Lion please have a chat with them if you would like to help out at an event this year. Or you can use the contact details listed below. Let’s make 2018, our best fundraising year yet. If you would like more information on any of our service or fundraising activities or would like to lodge an interest in helping us at our fundraising events please contact Rottingdean and Saltdean Lions on 08458 339617 or email at info@rottingdeanandsaltdeanlions.org.uk. If you have ever put a coin in a collection, supported one of our projects, attended an event we have organised or been involved with our Lions Club in any way - thank you. We are proud to help at the heart of local communities with every penny raised going direct to good causes. Not one penny is spent on administration as all running costs are funded by our members

Christmas 2017 senior’s lunches

Through the Message in a Bottle scheme we have issued information bottles to many local elderly or vulnerable people and through collecting boxes in all libraries and doctor's surgeries 967 used spectacles were collected in 2017 for use in the developing world, plus18 hearing aids. Also, together with other local Lions Clubs, we participated in ‘It’s a Knockout’, for people with learning difficulties. As always, to sustain our service activities, we will have another busy year in 2018 raising funds and subsequently supporting charities and projects in the local community – let’s hope this will continue for a long time to come. The Rottingdean Lions Fayre (16 June) and Saltdean Gala (14 July) are good examples, please put the dates in your diaries now. To advertise call 01273 586527 or email info@deansmagazine.co.uk

Kids Today! An insight into life at Our Lady of Lourdes RC Primary School. We all remember our schooldays, but have you ever wondered what it’s like to be at school today? Here are just a few of the many things that happened last term. In December, local author Nickhola- Susanne came and shared some of her stories from her book “The Wonder”. She brought lots of exciting props, and the children were encouraged to actively participate in creating thunderstorm noises, spraying water for a rainstorm, banging drums etc to create the atmosphere. After a gripping storytelling session about how a butterfly got its wings one child from Reception class was overheard to say, "That's the best story ever!"

During October, we had Grandparent Week activities across the school. It was an enormous success, and we had lots of positive comments from those who came along. We were mindful that some children may not have had someone, but can assure you all the grandparents that visited shared time amongst all the children.

September saw Shona Richards, 400m hurdler, British junior record holder and twice world junior silver medallist, visit the school. Shona held an assembly and spoke about her sporting life. She also talked about growth mindsets and was impressed with the children's knowledge of what it takes to achieve this! Also that month, John Cumming came in to give a talk about Rottingdean and its history. The children were really engaged and loved being able to learn about the different people who lived in Rottingdean and the many events that took place here.

The Royal British Legion 2017 Poppy Appeal The Rottingdean Poppy Appeal collecting area is called Rottingdean Coastal and includes Saltdean, Ovingdean, Roedean and Brighton Marina. This year, to date, the Poppy Appeal has raised £15,931. Although disappointing after last year’s eventual total of £19,092, we have come to realise that our fund raising seems to go in cycles – up one year and down the next. It is hoped that 2018, a milestone anniversary year, will be an ‘up’ year. We must again thank Captain Ali Pringle and the contingent from Longhill School CCF for their help with the Green collection on Remembrance Sunday, which was also down to £1,284 from last year’s magnificent £1,560. Our thanks also go to Ian Pringle for playing the pipes before and after the Remembrance Day service and the 23rd Brighton Scouts, Cubs and Beavers for their help in distributing and collecting the hymn sheets. Finally, we would like to record our appreciation and gratitude to all the volunteers, too numerous to mention, for giving up their time to help

organise, collect and count the money raised for the Poppy Appeal. Woodingdean, a stand-alone collecting area, raised £1,467 this year. RBL M The Remembrance Day service has always been organised by the Rottingdean Branch of Royal British Legion. In recent years, our membership has been much reduced and we are keen to reverse this trend. Without new members the Branch may have to close, with the result that there would be no Remembrance Day service on The Green. Please note that to be a member of the RBL you do not have to be ex-services. Indeed, half the Branch Committee has never served in the armed forces. If you would like to become a RBL member, please contact: www.britishlegion.org.uk and ask to join Rottingdean Branch BR2208. Annual Membership is currently £19.00 a year.

Rottingdean Preservation Society The Grange Gallery The Christmas Gift Art Fair, part of the Brighton Artists’ Open House Festival, from 16 November to 5 December 2017 was very successful; this regular event will again be held in December 2018. Looking ahead to a new year and a new programme of exhibitions at The Grange Gallery; an important change is that from 2018 the hanging day is now Monday, not Wednesday. Hence the Gallery is now open daily from Tuesday to Sunday – this change brings The Grange in line with other museums and galleries. January 30 - February 11: THE WHITEWAY CENTRE ART STUDENTS Art students show work demonstrating a lively mix of disciplines taught at the Centre - watercolour landscapes and seascapes, stained glass, life drawing, sketching. February 13 – 04 March: THE ROTTINGDEAN ART CLUB Local residents meet on a Wednesday afternoon to encourage and inspire each other; the paintings, drawings and prints created in 2017 come together for these two weeks. This exhibition will include acrylic paintings, paper collages, oil paintings and watercolours of a wide variety of subjects. Should you not yet be a member of the Rottingdean Preservation Society and would like to join us, please telephone 01273 301164 or email rpsmemsec@gmail.com.
